Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Nobs is a lyricist/producer who has been hard at work these last few years building an entirely unique sound of emceeing. Born and raised in Monroe, NY (a small suburb 40 miles north of New York City), Nobs has honed his craft with the release of two well-received albums on the independent hip hop circuit. His sound is a distinctive blend of frustrated artist philosophy and personal struggle.
Nobs is currently a member of Fingerprint Records (Hand Held Aspects, Neanderthal Youth) ,a label which has garnered significant regional success in recent years. Fingerprint focuses on providing innovative music as well as increasing their fan base via out-of-town live performances. Even though larger scale distribution is not a reality in the states yet, Nobs' music has still reached a respectable number of people through word of mouth, consistently positive press as well as Canadian, European and Japanese distribution.(Phonographique, Namskieo and PutEmontheMap)
Nobs first release, entitled Musicide, has sold 500 copies worldwide without major distribution or the financial support of a larger label. With guest appearances by iCON the Mic King, Johnny 5(producer) and Brad Hamers from Phlegm, this release secured Nobs' spot in the underground hip hop consciousness. Nobs' next release, entitled Typical Hip Hop Shit, broke the mold for this artist, sold only through online and local stores, this release sold all 1,000 copies pressed in a matter of months. It features production by the Hand Held Aspects and Maki from Canada (responsible for Canadian favorite Epic's musical releases).
Nobs most recent release entitled, Workin, has so far sold near 1,000 copies. Through constant radio airplay on CMJ reported stations nationwide, intense touring and online promotion, Nobs hopes to sell thousands more. This release is Nobs main focus at the moment and is also what he will be touring to promote.
Product Description
Workin' is really held together by some very strong production courtesy of Nobs himself with a little help from Fingerprint family members Losaka and Hippo. Over the course of the album's 17 tracks, and all the themes & moods that come with them, the beats stay knockin'. Ill loops, dusty drum-breaks and crazy vocal samples abound. There's an emphasis on small details that decorate the corners of the soundscape and melodic flourishes that keep the proceedings fresh- grabbing at your attention even after repeated listens. He conveys some intellectually complex ideas and emotionally challenging feelings on this record, and does so while maintaining his wit, humor, lyrical dexterity and personal accessibility. He never seems like he's putting on a character (even when he is ) or trying to be conceptual just for the sake of being conceptual. For the most part he just comes off like a guy rapping about how he feels and what he thinks.

Trumpeter Miles Davis led several sessions for Prestige Records between November 1955 and October 1956 with his legendary "first" quintet, featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. The sessions represent an incomparable musical legacy. Impeccably engineered by Rudy Van Gelder, the music was released on five albums that provide a unique glimpse at how five brilliant instrumentalists coalesced into one of the most extraordinary ensembles in modern jazz. Workin' presents an easygoing program that balances ballads with the blues and includes quintet performances of originals by Davis ("Four," "Half Nelson"), Coltrane ("Trane's Blues"), and Dave Brubeck ("In Your Own Sweet Way"); an interpretation of the standard "It Never Entered My Mind" without saxophone; and a piano-trio version of Ahmad Jamal's "Ahmad's Blues." Coltrane's melancholy solo on Brubeck's tune and Garland's spry excursion on Coltrane's are two of this classic's many highlights. --Mitchell Feldman
Album Description
Miles Davis's 1956 Quintet was one of his classic groups, featuring tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Jo Jones. They recorded four albums for Prestige in two marathon sessions. Among the highlights are It Never Entered My Mind, Four, In Your Own Sweet Way and two versions of The Theme. The music is essential in one form or another. 8 tracks. From the OJC/ Prestige label.

Trane bashers should shut up........2006-12-22
I only own Relaxin' out of the four at this point but I have one thing to say to the Trane bashers. He was searching for his sound and his solos are fine. As for the comment about Trane not fitting that's just stupid. Trane's restlessness was an excellent counterpoint to Miles' relaxed playing. If you had a cool saxaphone player with him it could have been boring even. Basically, even though Trane was on drugs, he still had a pretty good sound.
Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet.......2006-08-12
This CD was in excellent condition--and, of course, it is a classic. It was a joy to hear.
WORKIN': excellent.......2005-09-25
my favorite of the four great little albums recorded by the Miles Davis Quintet in 1956. quite simply, Workin' just has the best selection of tunes with the sweet openings of "It Never Entered My Mind" to the steamrolling performance of "Trane's Blues." this is a landmark release not only of Miles' great composition and power in musical direction, but also of John Coltrane's formative years honing his creative talent. the remaining members Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones all round it out with absolutely wonderful performances. the best record from this outstanding quintet.
Great album for those who dig straight-ahead Miles.......2005-08-16
The set of albums on Prestige, [Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', and Cookin'] has always been a favorite of mine. These albums were made in marathon sessions over a weekend so that Miles could be free to record under heavier promotion and a far more lucrative contract on Columbia Records. Albums like "Kind of Blue" and "Miles Ahead" that are traditionally thought of as the peak of Miles' art benefit from the increased budget of Columbia for recording and studio time as well as the opportunity to higher the best arrangers [like Bill Evans] or keep the best musicians together on the road for an extended period of time. The best albums on Columbia are not always known for hard-swinging [with the exception of Milestones] or conventional interpretations of hummable standards.
These Prestiges [Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', and Cookin'] are some of the hardest swinging albums in Miles' discography thanks to the tremendous rhythm section of Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, and Red Garland. Besides Miles' own fabulous playing on the ballads, the work of that rhythm section is what makes these albums so much fun to listen to. Even Miles wants to listen to them. Miles sits out on Ahmad's Blues and allows the rhythm section to play as a trio in a tribute to Ahmad Jamal, whose delicate chamber jazz and reinterpretations of standards inform the swing of this group.
I'd recommend any of the Prestige's equally as five star albums although I realize many people won't have the budget to splurge for all four and those that do may go all the way and purchase Miles' complete Prestige albums, even though some of that material is not up to the consistently high standard here.
Workin's is best thought of as "a plays the blues set". It gives a feel for what a club date might have sounded like. They record two versions of "the theme" to close out each side of the original album, just like they used the tune to close out club sets on the road. "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "It Never Entered My Mind" are buttery ballads ideal for a romantic mood or just for savoring Miles' muted trumpet. "Four" is a standard tune that Miles wrote or borrowed that's given a solid reading. "Trane's Blues" is interesting for the gospel reference to "If you do't go don't hinder me" taken from Charlie Parker's "the hymn" before the melody is repeated at the end of the song. "Half Nelson" is a solid swinger with some nice work by Philly Joe Jones. "Ahmad's Blues" depends on what you think of the rhythm section. I dig it because I like Red Garland and enjoy the spotlight on a rhythm section that can be underappreciated. Little things like Philly Joe Jones work on the hi-hat stick out more in a trio setting. Others who just listen to Miles may prefer an album like "Steamin" in the series instead.
I'm amazed by the 'Trane bashers who are reviewing this album. If you are listening to any 'Trane before "Giant Steps" you will be hearing a man who has not fully matured as an artist and you have to take the good with the bad. No, 'Trane isn't at his best here. That's part of what jazz is. The thrill is hearing him struggle with ideas and trying to find where the seeds of greatness for his later work. To trash this album because 'Trane isn't a master yet is to kind of miss the point of purchasing this album. You get it for a focused Miles [unlike some of his fusion stuff or late Columbia stuff] and an amazing rhythm section first.
Yikes, a meandering review, but I hope this helps some folks dig an album I've enjoyed for over 10 years and come back to often.

I like this CD.......2005-05-12
Admittedly I'm no expert at jazz and wouldn't know where to start with who plays what and all that ( forgive me ). But I do like this CD. I do like each of the sounds that each one contributes. They mesh well for that late-night easy listening on the radio. It Never Entered My Mind sounds so sweet and Trane's Blues does really sound good. It kinda feels a bit mournful in places but the overall effect is really lovely. Great to relax to when you've had a hard day and want an easy stress-free night.

Little known masterpiece .......2007-04-17
Miles Davis never undertook a project he didn't feel passionately about. He may have lacked passion for his audience, but he always had intense feelings about the music he absorbed into his soul. This transcendence came back in the form of cathartic expression, and while the masses were of little concern, they reaped the benefit of Miles' irrepressible desire to interpret musical form.
" Workin'" commences with the lovely " It Never Entered My Mind". Miles' trumpet rolls wistfully along with some grand piano work provided by Red Garland. The two sounds combine to convey a sentiment of " Had I known, things would have been different." The Miles Davis Quintet, showcase band for Miles at the time, consisted of wide ranging talent, with John Coltrane on board as well as "Philly" Joe Jones ( unbelievable drums) and Paul Chambers.
" Four", the next number, rollicks as the best of big band sounds do. Each member of the instrument section chime in with a sound that is fuller than most forty piece orchestras. Amazing.
Dave Brubecks " In Your Own Sweet Way" receives the Davis overhaul, and for the better. I love Brubeck, but this particular tune had always left me cold. Miles takes it and whips it inside out, giving it a sound that is still smooth and sophisticated, but with an added layer. He plumbs the depths with an alternate arrangement that allows even greater sophistication than its counterpart version. Superb.
All the songs are a pleasure, but the last one worth special mention is "Ahmad's Blues". This is seven and a half minutes of pure meditation, a song that lets the listener experience what sounds like ambivilance. The understated cymbal, with the graceful piano virtuousity, creates a tension that is pleasureable.
It is also worth noting that the drums on this are outstanding, jazz percussion at its finest. A must have for all Davis fans.

CLASSIC GANGSTA CRUNK!!!.......2006-07-14
Mayne!!! This album was killing everything & anything when it came out. This was pure gangsta crunk before the rest of the country knew anything about the word "crunk". Pat laced up real tight with this album, the production, done by juicy & paul was TOP NOTCH! If you didnt bob your head to any of thease songs then go see a doctor, FAST! ALL THE SONGS ARE STRAIGHT GANGSTA!!! He didnt have any features outside of the THREE SIX CAMP, so your getting a 100% HIPNOTIZE MIND'Z PRODUCT! if you never really were up on Three 6 MAFIA THIS ALBUM IS A GREAT INTRODUCTION TO THEM Even if it isnt a group album. This album will make you go back & peep their earlier work.
If I had to highlight one song off the album it would be "Aggravated robbery" it uses a sample off the movie "carlito's way" when sean penn the crooked lawyer is walking out of the prison. Its in incredible way how they sampled it up & just crunked it up!

Album Description
Ace's second salute to the genius of Jack Nitzsche is no less compelling than our first.
Once again the tracks have been carefully selected to give the full breadth of Nitzsche's abilities during every stage of his 40+ year career, from his earliest sessions, through to Jack's final collaborations with C.C. Adcock just months before his death.
The track listing features a copious quantity of rare material, including many previously unissued tracks that will be new to even the most avid Nitzsche collector.
The tenacity of Ace's licensing department has resulted in our being able to include many tracks that were not available at the time of the previous CD's release. Artists even queried their absence from Volume One and interceded with their record companies on our behalf.
As with "Hearing Is Believing", this CD is produced with the full co-operation and approval of Jack Nitzsche's family.
Customer Reviews:
Genius!!!!.......2007-03-16
This guy was a studio wizard without peer----and I don't want to hear Phil Spector's name mentioned in the same breath. The scope of his work is staggering. Anybody that would put John Lee Hooker and Miles Davis together for a jam session---THAT COULD GET THOSE TWO TOGETHER FOR A JAM SESSION---and then have sense enough to just let the tape roll has got to be a genius. Don't miss this. After Jack, they broke the mold.
Part 2, Terrific followup.......2006-12-06
Vol 1 of this tribute to Jack Nitzsche was terrific, and this disk maintains the pace. A few of the songs are well known, but perhaps not the versions by the artist on this disk.
But they are all rock solid. Many of the tracks are the best kind of mono - punchy and full-bodied.
If you like the music of 1960-65, and are tired of hearing the same classic hits over and over again, this cd will reawaken your enthusiasm for the era.
There are some tracks from a later era, but they are not out of place. The track with Miles Davis will blow your mind. It made me think of Shaft, or a Tarantino movie.

Fantastic follow up to the debut!.......2005-06-30
Brooks and Dunn followed up the fantastic "Brand New Man" cd with another outstanding work of art in "Hard Workin Man". Once again, the albulm was a big success. "She Used to Be Mine", and "That Ain't no Way to Go" both ended up topping the charts. Both of the songs allowed Dunn to do what he does best. They are fantastic, sorrowful, ballads. "We'll Burn that Bridge" and "Rock My World", both of which ended up at number 2, are fantastic honky tonk country songs. As is "Hard Workin Man", which one of my all-time favorite by Brooks and Dunn. The "Boot Scootin Boogie Remix" is fun, and "Heartbroke out of My Mind" is another very good upbeat song. "Mexican Minutes" shows off Kix Brooks very underrated voice, and "Our Time is Coming", "Texas Women", and "I Can't Put Out this Fire" round out a fantastic CD.
Brilliant second album.......2004-03-07
This album contains plenty of good-time rocking country music though there are several mid-tempo songs and ballads.
Just about any song from this album could have been a single. The five that actually were released as singles were Hard working man, That ain't no way to go, Rock my world (little country girl), We'll burn that bridge and She used to be mine. All of them were huge country hits.
Five of the songs here (Heartbroke out of my mind, She used to be mine, That ain't no way to go, Texas women don't stay lonely long, I can't put out this fire) are about women who have left their man. Aside from this common theme, they are all very different. As all the songs were original, I wonder what was going on in their lives at the time to inspire them.
The title track is about a week in the life of a hard-working man. We'll burn that bridge is about the potential of a new relationship. Mexican minutes is a light-hearted song about Americans in Mexico. Rock my world little country girl is about a woman who declines a man's offers but he still lives in hope. Our time is coming is about a struggle to maintain a relationship but it is a song of hope. The album is rounded off with a dance re-mix of Boot scooting boogie, one of the classic hits from their debut album.
Brooks and Dunn have recorded many brilliant albums but their first two albums were extra special. If you like rocking country music mixed with great ballads, you'll love this album.
Outdone Themselves.......2002-12-04
After such an incredible debut album, you would think that there was nowhere but down for this Country duo to head. Instead, they defy gravity and even top their first album with the release of "Hard Workin' Man". They worked hard on this release, and they come back with the same great harmonies, the great Country sound, and with a noticeable increase in their confidence.
Simply the best tune on this disc is "Mexican Minutes", a ballad of leaving the fast-paced life behind. Only these two guys could use the words "Chips and Salsa" and make it sound good. Kix Brooks gives the Messina tune fresh life. Put Ronnie Dunn's perfect Country voice into the forefront with "We'll Burn That Bridge" and the title track. His voice is full with just the right amount of twang and growl. The ballads are good on this release as well with "She Used to Be Mine" and "I Can't Put Out This Fire". Throw in a couple of upbeat tunes like "Rock My World (Little Country Girl)" and a remix of "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and you have a great Country hit.
No sophomore jinx here. These guys are on top of their game, and came through with another blockbuster album. They might be a little rockin' for Country, but they still respect their roots and create great music. This is definitely a step up from their first album and a true gem.
I'm a Hard Workin' Man.......2001-08-29
I love Brooks and Dunn's CD Hard Workin' Man because, I can ride, Rope, Hammer & Paint, Do things with my hand that most men can't.
I would be in a Rodeo Calf Roping and tie it's legs fast with a piggin' string in Las, Vegas at the National Finals Rodeo.
This is a good album and I'm a Hard Workin' Man?
As good as their first.......2000-12-21
Well, Brooks and Dunn lived up to their first record and made another smash. And, to my joy, they also included a club mix of "Boot Scootin' Boogie"...six and a half minutes of fun. They both have such different voices, and as they take turns singing lead, it makes for variety. Makes a refreshing change from all the solo artists out there. Plus a good mix of ballads and up-tempo songs make it a must for fans.

Customer Reviews:
Contains Barbara's first and last albums for Atlantic in their entirety.......2007-02-17
Collectables has rounded up the first and last Atlantic albums of the smooth and soulful songstress Barbara Lewis. This two-fer offers the first straight reissues of her Atlantic albums in CD format.
Hello Stranger (1963) consists solely of Lewis' own compositions. There's lots of organ accompaniment to be found here, as well as lush background harmonies courtesy of The Dells. The gems include her debut single "My Heart Went Do Dat Da," the Shirelles' knock off "My Mamma Told Me," and the minor hit "Puppy Love," but the crown jewel of course is the sumptuous title track (top 3 pop, #1 r&b). A charming sense of innocence permeates throughout (appropriately so, as Lewis was a teenager when she wrote these songs).
Far more sophisticated and musically varied is Lewis' Workin' On A Groovy Thing (1968). Comprised primarily of her final Atlantic singles (including the chart favorites "Make Me Your Baby" and "Make Me Belong To You") plus superb remakes like the title track (a hit for Patti Drew and, later, The 5th Dimension), and Deon Jackson's "Love Makes The World Go Round," Workin' On A Groovy Thing reveals that Lewis' voice had grown significantly in confidence and style since her initial recordings.
Twelve of the twenty-four tracks found on this two-fer are also available on Rhino's definitive Hello Stranger: The Best Of Barbara Lewis. Perhaps that makes it seem less than essential to non-Lewis diehards, but everything found here is truly first-rate. Hopefully, Collectables will offer another two-fer in the near future that includes It's Magic: Lewis' excellent album of standards.

Customer Reviews:
One of the few cds..........2005-06-25
that when they say CLASSIC, it's really a CLASSIC!
Everyone throw on your BVD's, Lee jeans and your Kango hats. This cd takes you back when 'HIP HOP' started and how it progressed.
I remember breakdancing to 2)"looking for the perfect beat, getting my groove on with 10) "tender love" and chilling in my Escalade with 16) "superthug"
KLASSIC!!!.......2003-05-28
Nothing but fun listening - that is what this disc is all about.
Taking you back to a day when hip/hop and rap where in an infancy stage, these cuts remind you how revolutionary the sound of early hip hop truly was.
There is no filler on this disc - you know every one of these songs, and they sound as fresh and as good as they did 20 years ago.
"Planet Rock" with its thick grooves and "Don't Stop" chorus has to take you back to the day - "Ladies First", with not only the choice vocals of Latifah, but the added joy of the rapid fire delivery of the long-missing Monie Love - "Humpty Dance" with the Digital Underground having fun "gettin' busy in the Burger King restroom" and a killer dance groove - "Me Myself and I", with the only rappers that could rival the Fat Boys for entertainment value in a rap - "Jump Around" - still an anthem to this day, and still sounding as fresh as ever - Naughty By Nature's one-two punch of "OPP" and "Hip Hop Hooray"...and that's only half the cuts on this disc.
You'll sing, you'll dance, you'll be reminded of how much fun you had in the clubs. There isn't more fun to be had for under $... on any disc that wil come out this year.
