Sinead O'Connor really knows how to end a career. True, she's been trying to do it since the early `90s, through incendiary action (ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live) and regularly spaced announcements of her retirement. The release of She Who Dwells comes with the caveat that it is O'Connor's last willful act and musical testamentand, who knows, her third attempt to flee the music industry may stick. If so, it's a shame because after nearly a decade of flailing musically, O'Connor rediscovered her true voice in 2002 with Sean-Nos Nua, an album of traditional Irish songs re-imagined in surprisingly fresh ways.
She Who Dwells (the full title is long enough to make Fiona Apple gasp for breath) is a two-CD set, but in typical O'Connor fashion it's oddly framed. Disc one is a collection of 19 rarities and previously unreleased tracks split three very different ways. There are more traditional Irish tunes, her electronic collaborations with Massive Attack and Asian Dub Foundation, and a range of covers that includes songs written or made famous by Aretha Franklin, Gram Parsons, the B-52s, and Abba. (These latter tracks shouldn't work, but for the best evidence they do, check out her almost Tex-Mex pop version of "Chiquitita.")
Disc two is a more traditional career-ending retrospective; it's a 13-track recording taken from a late 2002 concert at Vicar Street Theatre in Dublin. About half the songs come from Sean-Nos Nua, with three songs each lifted off I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got and Universal Mother,. O'Connor is backed by a great band that features Irish music stalwarts Donal Lunny and Sharon Shannon. As good as they are, it's O'Connor's voice that stuns throughout, whether singing the Irish blues of "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" or a version of "Nothing Compares to U" that contains both flute and a stately cello solo. One hopes this isn't the last we hear from O'Connor, but even if it is she's left us on a pure, high note. --Keith Moerer

V-Warrior!.......2007-01-31
Oh, yeh, WAY too much here, but some of it is ESSENTIAL.
High points include 100,000,000,000-watt renditions of the implausibly bitter B-52s rocker "Ain't It A Shame" and Abba's tear-jerking "Chiquitita," both of which are exhilarating. Originals of distinction include the spiritually and psychologically indeterminant "Emma's Song," plus the harrowing lament "No Matter How Hard I Try."
Atomic.
Sinead's Most Interesting album!.......2006-12-10
It took me three years to decide to buy this album. I wasn't sure at the beginning because it was a compilation of collaborations, b-sides and unreleased material plus a live album. I've never been into live albums because the songs never sound as good as the original versions, or unreleased songs because they usually suck.
However, the live album is great. It fills you up with such an amazing energy that you just want to play it again and again. I wish I could've gone to that concert!
The studio album has excellent songs I couldn't live without. "O Filii et Filiae" has these strange african-christian arrangements that make it one of the highlights of the album. "My Love I Bring" also has an excellent combination of celtic-rasta arrangements. Her voice on "Chiquitita" sounds beautiful. "It's All Good" could've easily been a smash hit in 2003. "A Thousand Broken Mirrors" is one of her best collaborations. "Dense Water, Deeper Down" has an amazing country-folk vibe that makes it the best track on the CD. "Big Bunch of Junkie Lies" reminds you of her album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got", and while its lyrics are somewhat a cliche, it's a beautiful song.
I can't wait to buy her new upcoming album called "Theology"!
Thank you .......2006-09-10
I really can't be bothered if this is her last album or not, obviously its not there is a new one out. This album is simply great, and I can't wait to buy the new one. Lets hope that she doesn't stop singing.
4.5 stars... Sprawling 2CD set delivers the goods, and more.......2006-05-02
Last year, Sinead O'Connor, supposedly "retired" from the music business, released one of the best albums of 2005, the full-throtle reggae "Throw Down Your Arms". I have never been a huge fan of Sinead (too "off-stream" in too many ways), but having loved last year's album, it brought me to this album.
"She Who Dwells" (2 CDs, 32 tracks, 146 min., released in 2003) actually is titled much longer (similar to Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn"), but nevermind that, it's the music that speaks. CD1 (19 tracks, 78 min.) brings a bunch of originals, traditionals, covers, B-tracks, and other obscurities, and guess what, it works really well. From covers of Nazareth's "Love Hurts" and ABBA's "Chiquita" to originals such as "Brigidine Diana" and "Emma's Song" to traditionals such as "Song of Jerusalem", it all sounds ecstatic. But the real beauty of this album is CD2 (13 tracks, 68 min.) which brings Sinead in concert, and how she shines! The concert brings together a superb mix of pop, celtic and reggae. Yes, it includes her mega-hit "Nothing Compares to U" (in an acoustic version) but even better are the mood songs (such as "Molly Malone" and "John I Love You") and the more exuberant songs such as the reggae-flavored "Fire on Babylon", foreshadowing her next album.
Sinead has long left the main-stream music business, now releasing albums under full control, and to great result. Disregarding her potitical beliefs, she has been releasing great music, much of it under the mainstream radar, and for that she is to be recommended. "She Who Dwells" is, much like last year's "Throw Down Your Arms", a superb album. Highly Recommended!

An astonishing display of talent.......2007-05-03
This cd is not new but the world needs to know how good this cd is...iam a preacher in the wilderness. If this cd is in your collection, dust it of and give it a listen again. This is by far one of Patti Austin finest work and needs the attention it deserves.
WOW!.......2007-04-07
It's my first CD bought from Amazon and it's one of the best albums of Patti. Different styles but a unique big voice! Hear her Aretha's voice in the track 5, for example! Track 1 is a new version of the first song in her album "Havana Candy". Track 2 shows us her "Ability To Swing". Tracks 3-4-10 are beautiful ballads. Track 6 is the reggae one. Tracks 7-8 have a sweet sound. Track 9 is my favourite of the album, in a gospel style.
Talent sometimes goes unnoticed by the masses!.......2003-01-02
In the world of motion pictures, the character performer tends to have a longer career than the so-called "leading man/woman" because the former can become whatever the script requires, providing necessary support. In the music world, there are some artists that never become the star that they should but that does not diminish their talent. They simply become a delicacy to be savored by a select few.
Patti Austin is one of those delicacies. She has had a long career as solo performer and guest artist, never quite gaining the status that she so richly deserves.
1994's "That Secret Place" is the perfect introduction for the uninitiated to the beautiful jewel that is Patti Austin. Backed on several cuts by the likes of Lee Ritenour (guitar), Bob James (piano), Paulinho da Costa (percussion), Greg Philliganes (piano/synthesizer), with string and horn arrangements by Jerry Hey, Austin travels a musical road consisting of jazz, pop, R & B, and shades of a little gospel influence.
"Ability to Swing" is a masterly executed mixture, allowing the singer to show her shills as a vocalist and scat singer. The band also gets to "cut loose" in its accompaniment and solo interludes.
"Broken Dreams, written by El Debarge (who also does guest vocalist duties), his brother Darell and Tony A. Redio, is about the breakup of a relationship and the possibility of a reconciliation. Both Debarge and Austin play off each other quite well, somewhat reminiscent of Austin's work with James Ingram.
Austin successfully covers the "Queen of Soul's" territory on the funky remake of Aretha's classic "Rock Steady".
"Captivated", with its reggae influence allows Austin to show a side not often found on her usual recordings.
"Reach" makes the listener want to "jump the pews" while the tune that follows it, "Stars in Your Eyes", is a quiet yet powerful love ballad.
The best of all is "Hurry Home", an obvious plead for the hasty return of a long absent lover. This tune shares many qualities with the Oleta Adams' hit "Get Here".
Patti Austin has done more in this one album than most of today's chart-toppers can do in several.
She is what good music is all about and maybe one day she'll get her much-deserved "props".
PATTI AUSTIN - - THE RARE SINGER WITH THE ABILITY TO SWING!.......1998-07-31
Whereas it's really hard to go wrong with a Patti Austin album this last album of new material from her time with GRP Records is as good as self-titled '84 Qwest Records release as a showcase for her unique gift of embracing any musical genre with depth and conviction. Again it becomes more and more frustrating as the sterling tracks move along and Austin sings with both technical finesse and stylish, knowing reserve. For she has recorded yet another record that SHOULD HAVE BEEN a blockbuster SMASH HIT!
Once more she makes it hard to pick favorites, but the Grammy-nominated "Ability to Swing", and the anthemic pop ballad "Somebody Make Me Laugh", along with the kool scat of the title song are enough reason to smile for the overlooked blessing of fine, classic contemporary music.
The arrangement on Aretha Franklin's evergreen "Rock Steady" makes you want mo'. Producer Lee Ritenour is obviously in love with old friend Austin's silk! y, powerful voice. He clothes it well all over this outing. "Broken Dreams" (w/ El DeBarge) is soulfully sweet Quiet Storm magic, while "Reach" is funky R&B aided by vocal powerhouses Tata Vega, Phil Perry, and Vesta!
"Hurry Home" finds Austin offering up a more raw, seductive plea, and "Stars in Your Eyes" is an emotion-packed, soaring prayer, from a melodic angel.
Another desert island CD.

This is one of those albums that gets better & better!!.......1998-07-21
Patti Austin has one of "those perfect voices" -- clear, always in tune -- but with rare depth and sincerity. This is a real "has it all" album, and I heartily recommend it as THE "definitive" Patti Austin -- a "must have" for anyone with a grown-up appetite for jazz voice.

Borders on show tunes.......2005-02-09
The audio quality is great, as is most often the case with Reference Recordings. However, there are far better chorales and compositions than represented on this cd. The content strikes me as saccharine. We're not allowed to mention other recordings in reviews, but I put one idea of some good choral music (chorale la) in the recommended instead section.
Adrenaline and tears this CD fills the soul. a GEM.......1999-10-28
I really like heoric choral/organ/orchestra music. But this is the ONE disc that I think everyone should experience. I recently played this disc at a HiFi Event in Norway. About half the listeners clamored for info on where to buy it. This one is magic, trust me.

Good stuff.......2007-03-30
to listen to while lounging around the house. :) Very peaceful and soft.
"Haunting" is a good word for it.......2004-10-21
I find my favorite tracks are Dido, Secret Tear, and Willow, though I also like Pace Pace and other tracks. While looking for the lyrics for Dido, preferably in English, I tripped over Amazon's listing and these reviews. I WILL be going out to find Aria 2 and 3 right after work, because if 2 is even better than 1, I'd better not be doing anything else of importance when I listen to it. This first album is really great stuff, and now I know to look for more by Paul Schwartz. I can't get technical about the music, as I don't have that kind of expertise, but I can agree that these tracks are generally relaxing, and some of them REALLY speak to me. It would be nice if I understood what they were SAYING, so I'll continue my search for lyrics. :-D
Traditional meets Modern.......2004-06-21
Like every project composer Paul Schwartz takes on he bring it to life and this album is simply breathtaking! This may not be his best work ever but 'Aria' is his debut into the world of classical crossover and the material here shows great potential but with much room for improvement, and his growth as an artist has become apparent with every release thereafter. The sublime music he creates becomes more divine with each new endeavor and he's proven himself worthy of my attention time and time again, becoming a musician I deeply respect. His arrangements overtake me, filling me with the irrefutable beauty he provokes, causing my senses to soar as I close my eyes and allow the glorious sounds to seep in and release me into a momentary state of bliss.
"Secret Tear" was the first song I ever heard by Paul Schwartz and is probably my favorite on here but despite how many times I've heard "Un Bel Di" remade, aside from the operatic singing, the melody is distinctly his own with lovely Japanese strumming in the beginning and a jazzy saxophone that comes in after about 2-minutes of playing... Other highlights for me include "Willow" and "Dido", which are both positively gorgeous with lush strings and hypnotic beats (you can also hear a wonderful trance remix of the latter on DJ Tiesto's 'Summerbreeze'), and "Pamina Blue" is a hybrid of modern r&b and traditional opera with the primary vocalists being Rebecca Luker and Michelle Ivey throughout this album.
'Aria 2: New Horizon' is far better than this but fans of Paul Schwartz need this in their collection; however, good luck finding it new. I had to get mine used and it was a promotional copy that contained no booklet inside.
Breathtakingly beautiful.......2003-01-29
I recently got into Paul Schwartz's music in the past few months, beginning with "State of Grace". I absolutely loved that album, not to mention the concept of fusing classical and pop music together. The results simply takes my breath away. I moved on to "Earthbound", Paul's latest album which is another winner in my book. I didn't realize up until recently that I had already heard Paul Schwartz's work as a composer with his album "Aria". I kinda put that cd aside and allowed for other music to take hold of me in recent months. So I dug around in my massive cd collection and found my copy of "Aria" which I had purchased used at my favorite cd store. As I am listening to "Aria" for the first time in months, I immediately recognize Paul's work on this particular album. I can't really pinpoint my finger on Paul's sound but I definitely hear it here. On "Aria", the music is more classical with operatic vocals than what I'm used to hearing on "State of Grace" and "Earthbound" which are heavily influenced by pop music as well as classical music. The vocals are provided by Rebecca Luker and Michelle Ivey as opposed to Lisbeth Scott like on "State of Grace" and "Earthbound". And of course, Paul's choice in vocalists is impeccable. Both Rebecca and Michelle have absolutely stunning vocals. Musically, "Aria" is not my favorite Paul Schwartz album but it is still very good nonetheless. I jus prefer "State of Grace" and "Earthbound". I however enjoyed "Secret Tear", "Willow" and "Habenara" a lot. I am definitely a fan of Paul Schwartz's music and look forward to hearing more from him.
What a concept!.......2002-12-03
Maybe I've been living under a rock somewhere, but this music is all new to me and I'm blown away! Closing the gap in time and recognizing beauty in a relationship between the rhythms and sound effects of 21st century techno combined with the timeless passion of 19th century opera is an incredible concept! Equally balanced and not overpowering, it's the best of both worlds. This music will take you places if you let it! Even if you thought you'd never enjoy opera... this may change your mind!! Pace Pace mio Dio

Beautiful.......2004-03-16
This CD takes Hillsongs Australia's best music and turns it into instrumental only sets that are perfect for relaxing, de-stressing, and doing devotions to. If you love Hillsong Australia or Darlene Zschech's music, this is a must-have in your collection. I would also recommend this album to worshippers who want something other than hymns that's not incredibly upbeat and want to put "a new song" in their heart!
Beside Still Waters.......2004-03-08
This CD is relaxing and great to do devotions to. It is as soothing as classical music. This is probably my favorite Hillsongs Australia CD yet.
Stress free atmosphere.......2003-05-16
Music like this is very helpful to create a stress free atmosphere. As a fulltime graduate student I found this CD easy to listen to while I study. A mood altering CD that points me to LORD is a good thing. This CD is number one on my current play list.
Calm Delight.......2000-06-14
This CD offers a nice blend of classical melodies. It is a good collection of calm and delightful songs that are inspiring and perfect for setting a relaxing atmosphere.
