Very nicely done.......2005-04-08
I Love Marvin Gaye and have alot of his previous recordings..I think the sax player did a good job covering Marvin Gaye and some of the songs have a modern up-tempo vibe.

Good.......2005-04-06
I Think this is a fun and good rendition of these titled songs, I've compared them to the original tracks from my Dad's records and I like it.

Disrespectful and disappointing....enough is enough !!.......2005-03-04
I just bought this CD two hours ago. In a word--TERRIBLE! I bought it because I don't think anyone had ever re-made "Come Live With Me Angel" from the "I Want You" album and which is one of my favorite Marvin Gaye songs. Navarre's rendition, as well as the entire CD, made me angry, and not just because of the money that I spent for it. I am personally offended by these "artists" overt attempt to rape and bastardize the work of Marvin Gaye and other R&B godfathers (such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder, among others) and call it a "tribute". That's like when a player meets meets your mother or sister, says that he loves her mind when he's really trying to get at something else!! These people aren't any different, and I am insulted by their not-so-"smooth" attempt to pimp such fine music!
Songs like 'Distant Lover', 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine', and 'Inner City Blues', were popular during a time when Black people suffered from gross socioeconomic inequality and were treated as second class citizens. Despite trials and humiliation, we always had the ability to express the beauty of our spirits. We lived, loved, laughed, married, raised children, worshipped and made music during Jim Crow. I'm 34, and I wonder how Duke Ellington, Ramsey Lewis, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Kool & the Gang, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, etc, could make music that intrigued minds, warmed souls and soothed hearts from their generations through today. I have great respect for these artists, because despite the pain and ugliness they endured in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, they reached into the warmest parts of their hearts and transposed their feelings into a legacy of beautiful, timeless music.
If someone is going to do a re-make, they should respect it as if it they wrote it (such as "Forever, For Always, For Love" by Luther Vandross, beautifully re-done by Lalah Hathaway).
These three R&B pagans who make these "smooth jazz tributes" need to be shut down. Yeah, I know y'all got to feed your families. Why don't you do the public a favor--stop imitating Marvin, Stevie and others, and make real music of your own, or just quit? I haven't listened to your other "tributes", and I'm not going to, either. By listening to this one CD, I as well as others can tell that your hearts definitely aren't into this music, and that you all are merely just playing notes written on a page.
It's funny that group of "artists" didn't name themselves, so that the CD had to be placed with the other Marvin Gaye CD's in the music store. If I made music this terrible, I wouldn't want to identify myself either.
Navarre Corporation, you should repent and ask Marvin Gaye for forgiveness, and pray for another job!!

Some things work...Some things don't....This is one of them.......2006-08-25
Although Marvin Gaye did a killing on the "When I'm Alone I Cry" album, this one just didn't quite get over the hump. On a few songs (The Ballads) Marvin does "Wonders", but on the uptempo songs there's nothing to write home about. If your buying this just to complete your Marvin Gaye collection, fine!, but to hunt this down, No!
Don't Slag On This!.......2004-08-19
Early in his career Motown legend Marvin Gaye had wanted to
be a crooner and his primary idol in this field was Nat King Cole.So it's only natural that he would pay tribute to him on this covers album midway through his early 60's success. The amazing part of this is he actually pulls it off-offering up
beautiful covers of tunes like "Rambling Rose" and "Nature Boy",
right up there with the standards set by Nat himself! Now there
will never be another Nat King Cole but Gaye puts his own, more
sudtle spin on this classics using very similar backup orchestrations.
The highlight is the closing "Calypso Woman" in
whitch Marvin Gaye delivers a more soulful, animated and pugnacious approch to the vocals then Nat ever did and it ends
up sounding like an original! Now normally I've always questioned
Barry Gordy's need for his acts to appeal to the early 60's
white supper club crowd but because Marvin Gaye always tended to
gravitate to these kinds of songs on his own then it was perfectly legidiment for him to do this album. But without a hit
it became burried back in 1965,was reissued on CD with all of
Gaye's 60's albums in the mid 80's and is actually still in print
as something of a cutout, but who knows for how long. Before it
goes out of print ALL Gaye fans should pick this album up!And
for thouroughbred Nat Cole fans I'd take antoher look at this
album-it won't dissappoint you either!

Jazzy Honors To The Master Of Soul.......2001-04-07
This tribute album features jazz cover's of Marvin Gaye classics spanning his entire career. The songs featured here were recorded from the mid sixties to the late nineties. Some of these recordings have become classics on their own right aswell, like Grover Washington's rendition of Ìnner City Blues`. Other great tunes are for example a stunning nine- minute-plus version of a `Trouble Man` track by Stanley Turrentine. Five covers of Gaye's masterpiece `What`s Going On`-album are among the highlights featured on the CD. The whole set is proof of the ever growing inspiration of Marvin Gaye's musical legacy on musicians from all musical backgrounds, regardless of time or style.

A beautiful and loving tribute to be cherished forever........2003-09-19
This is a beautiful tribute to Marvin Gaye, Billy Stewart and the soul ballad. The production and arrangements are also superb and this was certainly one of 1999's best R&B albums. Sadly, it went mostly unnoticed and as such was not the huge hit it deserved to have been. Buy it if only for "Cross My Heart", "Strange Feelings" and "What's Going On?".
