Just as Volume one displayed a wide range of funk classics, Volume two returns with another collection of high quality hits from the 70's. I thought that this album really represented funk in its prime.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soul balladeers ever........2006-01-13

While not a truly comprehensive anthology of Peabo's vast body of work, this budget-priced CD does give you most of his best songs. The sound quality is not perfect but still fairly good. Be sure to play this fine CD as background music during a romantic candlelight dinner--it's sure to please.

2 out of 5 stars Rob D.......2005-07-08

The selections on this CD are great. The MAJOR problem is that the tracks are not in original stereo, but mostly in mono with some pseudo stereo effect on some tracks that causes the chorus (background) vocals to sound as if they are emanating from down a deep well! Quite surprising since this disc is manufactured by "RHINO"! Select another Peabo disc! I am!

3 out of 5 stars Half Classic-Half filler.......2004-03-13

As an intro to Peabo the first 8 songs are a must-have.
But if you want the most complete, buy the anthology.
If you want the cream-of-the-crop, buy the Super Hits.
If you want the peak of his career get his
Straight From The Heart and duets with Roberta Flack.
But this is an o.k. introduction.

5 out of 5 stars House Rockers Please enter the Club!!!.......2004-05-16

If you are or were in my case, a serious house music aficionado, this CD is a must! If you were just a casual listener then don't buy, pick up a Donna Summer album or something to that effect. If you can identify with Womack & Womack, Weather Girls, Brothers Johnson, Roy Ayers, Sylvester, Jocelyn Brown etc. you got the right CD!!!
This is not for "percolators", Old School Rockers only!

5 out of 5 stars Jersey is in the House.......2003-05-24

Now if you grew up in Jersey especially North and Central Jersey you know that we love underground club classic hits one song you will always hear if you are drving around Newark is BABY I'M SCARED OF YOU by WOMACK AND WOMACK reminds me of my childhood and watching your parents dance in the basement parties when the kids were supposed to be sleeping Great memories!

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2003-02-24

Touch and Go and Love is The Message was the only reason to give the cd 2 stars, it is really not worth buying maybe you can find other cd's w/ above listed songs w/ better choices.
Save your money!

4 out of 5 stars stood the test of time...........2002-05-06

First, get all 3 volumes, put 'em on your multi-disc cd player, then let these dancefloor gems do their thaaang... Can be played at a bbq on Memorial Day, July 4, Labour Day, etc... or while you're playing Twister (tangled up in a pretzel position while trying to grab that Bacardi & Coke that's waaaay on the other side of the mat ;) whatever... you get the idea. Your cooler friends will scream and shout when their favorite joints get those memories flooding back.

3 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Series.......2001-09-08

Give Your Body Up is an interesting collection of discs. It achieves its aim of preserving foundational songs essential to the progression of modern dance club music. The discs contain rareties that are difficult to find elsewhere. Each disc in the series, this one in particular, may cover too much ground and have too much variety. There was a good bit of difference stylistically between the Philly Sound and string/horn drenched dance music of the 70's on the one hand and the synth-based, drum machine sound of the early and mid 80's on the other. Both decades are intermixed, not in chronological order. So we find the organic, gospel-inflected "Over and Over" next to the electronic "BRA," the orchestral "Love Is The Message" alongside the reggae-laced "Now That We've Found Love." As a source for songs, however, this series is definitely different from those "Disco" sets that focus on radio hits.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Frequency modulation .......2005-11-09

I love this CD.

It's like a perfect little mix, circa 68-71, but in addition to music both popular ("I Got a Line on You," "Eight Miles High," "Alone Again Or") and more obscure ("The City," "Barabajagal"), it also contains resin-tinged commericals for jeans and waterbeds, news announcements, ads for concerts and commentary by uber-smooth L.A. DJ B. Mitchell Reed.

Basically, it's like listening to 73 minutes of California FM radio during its best period.

I got the other volume first, years ago, the one with Tom Donahue, and I liked it for the most part because I dug the concept and Donahue is endlessly amiable, but the tunes in that collection didn't fit together as seamlessly, and I knew almost all of them.

On this second volume, the raps are integrated more ironically and the song selection is just stronger and more unified in tone.

Makes me yearn for the pre-Clear Channel radio era, or at least for the left-of-the-dial college radio, both of which are now pretty much gone forever.

4 out of 5 stars little slice o history; freeform underground radio.......2003-05-25

B Mitchell Reed was one of the founders of freeform rock and roll radio in the mid to late 60s. He, Tom Donahue, Dave Diamond, Uncle T., and others created a new medium, one which made the DJ more than a disc spinner. He became the radio listener's friend and advisor, and his choices of tunes(called a set) helped shape the evening. He would also hip you in to good concerts around town, happenings, etc. A typical set would run 3 to 6 tunes, sometimes with a common theme; Say, Casey Jones by the Dead, Traintime by Cream, and Train, Train by Blackfoot. The commercials are also very low-key and listener-friendly. This CD has excerpts from some shows from those times. it really does give you a feel of what radio was like in those days. BMR is so cool that Joni Mitchell wrote a song about him....

2 out of 5 stars Is FM Radio Cool?.......2000-10-03

Since the advent of the F.M. rock radio format in the early 70's, A.M. radio has been relegated to the status of "uncool", which is more than unfair. A.M. radio lives on in the hearts of "real" radio fans, who listen to the likes of Art Bell and Jay Marvin(WLS Chicago). These guys are the true "rogues" of the airwaves, discussing relevant issues and stirring up the rebel in all of us. For me, the "real" underground radio is still found on A.M.

5 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Gem!.......2000-06-01

This interesting compilation of favorite tracks played by the immortal DJ, B. Mitchel Reed, is a must for any lovers of free-form radio and obscure music tracks. While tracks by artists such as The Byrds and Steppenwolf are familiar classics now, the clear standouts are Jefferson Airplane's version of "Wooden Ships," and Brewer and Shipley's terrific cover of Jim Pepper's rockin' "Witchi-Tai-To." The late Mike Bloomfield's guitar mastery is evident on the Electric Flag's "Killing Floor," and Tina Turner manages to make "Honky Tonk Women" more interesting than the original. Perhaps what's best of all are BMR's signature voiceovers and commercials in between the tracks that really put this CD over the top. Highly recommended for all radio and music lovers!

5 out of 5 stars FM Radio When It WAS Cool!.......2000-01-20

Think FM radio is cool now? Check out one of the founding fathers of FM Rock Radio. BMR rocks and so does the music. BMR is gone but through this CD he and the music live on

5 out of 5 stars Toga! Toga! Toga!.......2003-11-23

First of all, let me say that this CD has an awful title and a stupid cover. But the music on the CD is great, and that's the important thing. This is great party time rock and roll. The recording dates are from between 1959 and 1972. All the songs are great, and although some of them have been on other compilation albums, there are a few that are hard to find. "Papa-Omm-Mow-Mow" by the Rivingtons and "Shake a Tail Feather" by the Five Du-Tones in particular are not often anthologized. This CD is currently out of print, but if you find a reasonably priced used copy, it's well worth getting.

Living in OHIO the songs on this compilation are known more by beat, melodies, and the lyrics. You may not the know the artists though except for 60/70's soul siren Barbara Mason whose cult favorite "Another Man" is featured here. The song is much sampled most recently on Biggie Smalls 1997 "Another" on his "LIFE AFTER DEATH" release.

On friday nights the radio stations would feature different djs playing the mix records to get you ready to go out and party! "Thanks to you" by Sinnamon and "You aint really down" by Status IV are two that would be familiar to some no matter what coast you are living on. Fantays's gospel tinged post disco era "You're too late" gets the toes tapping and fingers snapping. And how can one forget Shades of Love's "Keep in touch (Body to Body) which is a underground Ballroom favorite.

With this release you cant go wrong....The ultimate club mix of 'You aint really down" would have been more desired but this is essential 80's dance, a mix between disco and freestyle it will leave you longing for the days of yesteryear when the djs determined what was hot and a hit.

4 out of 5 stars THE FIRST REVIEWER IS JOKING, RIGHT?? RIGHT??.......2006-01-07

Maybe it's our friend's geographical location, but this compilation offers a view into the underground club sene that is hard to find on CD. Think about clubs like Paradise Garage, The Loft and Better Days -- but I bet the first reviewer knows nothing about those clubs.

Getting "Thanks To You", "You Ain't Really Down" and "Keep In Touch (Body To Body)" on one CD is worth the price alone. I admit all of the songs are not hard-core Garage classics (otherwise, I might have given this CD five stars), but this is still a hot CD to get...

4 out of 5 stars Ignore the Last Review, This One's a Winner!.......2005-08-03

This compilation offers a splendid take on the 80's underground dance scene. If you're looking for mainstream, radio hits, these tracks may not appeal to you. At the Paradise Garage, Better Days, The Clubhouse,Catacombs, and other urban after hours clubs on the East Coast, these songs were real crowd pleasers and garner "classic" status today. The album is worth it's price simply for having the rare, yet highly popular and danceable "You're Too Late" by Fantasy. Also, Sinnamon's "Thanks to You" is still influencing a lot of the electronica and techno cuts that come out today with its computer generated synth line and dubbed out vocals. Lastly, Everyone Here Must Party" and "Please Don't Go" are peak hour party pumpers. If you feel like dancing and love the underground, Mid-Atlantic States, after hours, urban, 80's sound, this one is definitely a winner!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation, First Reviewer obviously in a Cave!.......2005-02-25

Just another testament that 80's L.A. club life could not hold a candle to NY or Miami!! These songs would definitely be obscure on the West Coast (except maybe gay bars or in SF) but they were staple on the East Coast.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT IS THIS GUY TALKING ABOUT?.......2004-04-24

The above poster is obviously NOT a dance music head, if he only recognized 2 songs!!! You gotta be kidding me!!!
