The Killers five-million-selling debut, 2004's Hot Fuss, saw the stylish Las Vegas quartet mining inspiration from its favorite '80s British acts Duran Duran, the Cure, and the Smiths. On its follow-up, the group turns its focus homeward. First there's the album title, Sam's Town, which pays tribute to the old-school local casino where the band got its start. Then there's the music inside, a collection of windswept rockers in the vein of Bruce Springsteen that leave the indie-disco vibe of "Mr. Brightside" in the desert dust. Working with producers Alan Moulder and Flood (best known for their work with U2, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails), everything here sounds bigger and shinier, with full-blown strings and choirs coloring epics like "When You Were Young" and "The River Is Wild." Coming soon to a stadium near you. --Aidin Vaziri

The Killers --- Not So Good.......2007-08-06
Upfront I must admit that I am 55 years old and maybe I am just out of the demographic for this stuff nowadays. I bought this based on the reccomendation of my kids, (Should have seen this coming, since they have led me to other stuff that was just a bit beyond my comprehension at my rapidly advancing age.), but alas I was not impressed by what I heard.
It is just too dark and gloomy for my taste. I have by the way worn out my copy of Costello Music by the Fratellis so I think there may just be hope for the old geezer! LOL :)
Not a CC from Hot Fuss.......2007-07-24
The 2nd album from the killers doesn't dissappoint at all, it has 7 to 8 songs that easily could be picked as single, track 6 "read my mind" being my favorite. Sam's town, When You were young,Bling, For Reasons Unknowned, Uncle Johnny, Bones, This River is Wild, all great songs, and above all this is not a carbon copy from hot fuss.
A stunning transformation.......2007-07-24
SAM'S TOWN immediately hits the listener with a sound that is significantly different from HOT FUSS. If it wasn't for the vocals, it would be fair to say you were listening to a totally different band. This type of change is risky in a new band; the fear being that fans will be alienated. Personally, I love when bands continue to evolve and search for new sounds and themes. It keeps things from becoming boring and it prevents that, "Didn't I hear this before?" feeling.
The question is it successful? The answer is, "Yes."
Hard driving anthems relating to genuine emotions triumph over artifice and The Killers pull it off very well here. Flowers' voice strains for creditability when pushed, but he pulls it off and while lacking the force of many other rockers, his vulnerability makes the songs that much better. While they don't all come off with the same power , the songs hold up in their new settings and the total package comes together. While still not a classic, this is a worthy effort from The Killers and I hope they continue to push themselves to make music worth listening to.
As good as Hot Fuzz... just different.......2007-07-14
The title says the bulk of how I feel. I listen to the album in its entirety whenever I listen to it... I like every song though there are some that I like more than others (which is the same with Hot Fuzz).
The music is a bit bolder, and a bit more grandiose (musically and lyrically), but the synth is still there and after giving the album a listen or 3 you'll be singing along to each track. The lead singer's (Flowers) voice sounds a bit different to me on this album, but not for better or worse, just slightly different. The album definitely seems to be more mature (but I have no idea where the Springsteen analogy came from), the songs and the hooks aren't as poppy (at least not in every song) and it takes more than one listening for some songs to grow on you. (For instance I didn't like 'Sams Town' (track 1) the first couple times I heard it, but now its one of my favorites).
Overall, if you like popular music, or alternative music in general... its worth listening to, but I wouldn't expect a life altering experience.
doesnt measure up to hot fuss.......2007-07-09
sorry to all of you who really like this album, but in my own opinion, it can't measure up to 'hot fuss'

Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 - Sam Cooke.......2007-07-29
I'm enjoying this CD. It takes me back in time and is bringing back good memories
If only Sam Cooke were alive today !.......2007-07-20
Portrait of a legend was exactly what the title suggested. Sam Cooke is amazing and has the voice of an angel no matter what type of music he is singing. His sound is so very classy, upbeat and fun. His sound is a presentation of what all music could've been. If only he were still alive today, the wonderful music that might have been. The world lost one of it's most precious gifts when we lost Sam Cooke!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent tribute.......2007-07-20
Just look at the tracklist and you'll realize how many standards Sam Cooke sang first. This is the best of the collections of Cooke's work with both great sound and packaging. If you're wanting to recapture this part of your youth, this is a very good Cooke CD to get.
Sam Cooke.......2007-07-14
This CD is well worth the money. All of Cooke's big hits...plus some of his very early songs.
A real treasure.......2007-05-16
This album really hooked me on the awesome talent of Sam Cooke! I had listened over the years to Sam's many hits on the radio. I tried this album to catch some of my favorites. Wow, what a revelation! it is now one of my top three favorite CDs. I can't recommend it more.

Now we have Greatest Hits, a 22-song collection of Cooke's pop hits in addition to the 13-song Best Of collection and the 28-song The Man and His Music. Only The Man comes close to presenting a complete portrait of the legendary soul singer: At least there are examples of Cooke's gospel and R&B material. (Any collection without "A Change is Gonna Come" is an automatic failure.) Cooke's melodious voice and deft songwriting touch are worthy of more than a single-disc compilation. If you want just the pop smashes, the sublime ballads, and infectious mellow grooves, this set will suffice. Otherwise, The Man offers a more comprehensive and well-rounded look at Cooke's legacy. --Marc Greilsamer

disappointed.......2006-08-10
Portrait of A Legend is much much better, wished that I hadn't bothered to buy this one as well as "Portrait"
DO NOT BUY THIS!!!.......2006-04-10
This compilation is completely worthless. The SACD "Portrait of a Legend" has long since eclipsed this unforgivable compilation of The Great Sam Cooke. It is completely unessential. There is no musical representation from Sam's glorious gospel days nor his ambitious and wonderfully risk taking final days. I can't believe this is even in print. People may say "Oh its just for casual Sam Cooke fans or for those who would like to start getting into his music." I don't even think there is a such thing as a "casual" Sam Cooke fan! The best inroduction to Sam is "Portrait of a Legend" and from there get "Keep Movin' On" "Live at Harlem Square" "At The Copa" "Sam Cooke with The Soul Stirrers" and the flawless "Night Beat." From there seek out the three box sets and then songs and albums that can only be found on vinyl. This would have received zero stars but Sam's voice is so transcendent it makes up for every flaw I described. :o)

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub "Hopelandic"--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening "Svefn-G-Englar" that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on "Flugufrelsarinn," or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of "Ny Batteri." --Amazon.co.uk

With tongue firmly poked in cheek. Being "Visually Enhanced" Music is, first, enjoyed by the eye.
Which is to say that if the COVER is "interesting" the MUSIC is, possibabblely, at least as "inspired."
Take for instance the COVER of "Rock Bottom"... EXACTLY Why Mr. Wyatt and Alfraidie Cat ever changed that is beyond understanding, however it still touches the heart all the way up the charts. With that in mind, Sigur's Ro's's A'gaetis's Byrjun's, (it is with a tear on the other cheek this type-tighter does not connect the a to the e,) COVER has been observed for the past 8 years or so, picked up and perused and neatly replaced neatly in the bin still in protective placenta . ( See :: Put THAT Book Back on the Shelf and 787 Ray Johnson gives birth to CalligRayphy's new hole ) So it passes the "Visual Review". The Smekkleysa alone is worth the price. To make it short and tweet :: The SNIPPETS are not nearly long enough, however having purchased this, we are looking forward to cele-berating the entire Jam Boring Jamboree . AMAZING MUSIC BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF SOME POP MUSIC CRITICS MINDS.......2007-06-22
Like the other reviewer nearby, I also have a pet peeve about this word "pretentious" when applied to Sigur Ros (or other arful pop). It is a universal cliche amongst reviewers who don't like art rock or progressive rock. The word "pretentious" actually means:
---adjective DISAPPROVING
---trying to appear or sound more important or clever than you are,
especially in matters of art and literature:
---a pretentious art critic
---The novel deals with grand themes, but is never heavy or pretentious.
-- characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
-- making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious
I've heard this word all my life because apparently I like a lot of music that is "pretentious." The last time I heard it used was recently on a radio special about the 40th anniversary for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which one critic decried as "the beginning of pretentiousness in pop music". And this for an album that is consistently at the top of almost every list as the most important album ever made-- I guess a LOT of people like pretentious art.
What these critics are saying is that pop and rock musicians that have other musical influences (i.e., world music, classical music, jazz music) are somehow falsely trying to BE world musicians, classical musicians, and jazz musicians by using those influences. Or that lyricist that have other influences (i.e., poetry) are trying to BE poets. In reality, all they are is open-minded pop and rock musicians, willing to experiment with skills they have that lie beyond the boundaries of early rock styles (i.e., Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.).
I'm not sure why it makes you pretentious simply because you have musical skills beyond pop and rock, but I can't imagine a more boring scenario than a genre that didn't grow or challenge itself. In reality, this is how the language of an art form evolves. The heyday for what Sigur Ros is trying to do was between 1967-1977, when progressive rock was literally a top ten chart topping phenomenon.
In the end, this is all "pretentious" means when used by such critics: they don't like the styles of music that exist midway between folk and classical, or rock and jazz, or whatever and whatever. I love music rooted in pop, rock, and folk that is embellished by all sorts of influences from more complicated genres. I love the fact that a song can swing from a gentle little folk tune to a complicated instrumental movement. I also love the storytelling aspect of longer pieces of music and concept albums-- it gives the lyricist more time to stretch out and explore a theme. These artists are not trying to be something that they are not, they are being exactly what they ARE: pop artists with ears open to other influences. This happened as soon as Paul McCartney (in 1967) came into the studio after hearing a classical work with a Bach trumpet, and he wrote and plopped a similar trumpet arrangement in "Penny Lane." It happened when Brian Wilson crumbled the Beach Boys formulaic song structure (1966) and started to record his collage piece SMiLE. And then for ten odd years after, much of the best of rock music had similar boundary-breaking tendencies.
Sigur Ros is very much in the art-rock category. You can see their lead singer from one or two vantage points (albeit extreme ones): either he is the most otherworldly supremely beautiful gift to pop music that has ever happened, or he is a pretentious pseudo-opera singer. And really, which vantage you choose depends on whether or not you are moved by his work. You can tell which camp I fit in-- I think he's one of the most important pop artists on the planet, and you'd have to be crazy not to at least give him a chance to work his magic on you. Buy this record--- TODAY!
Sigur Ros CD.......2007-06-08
Received in a timely fashion. Couldn;t be happier with the condition. Mahalo!
Undescribable...Breathtaking.........2007-05-16
Breathtaking is truly the only word that describes this album as a whole. It's one of the most stunning and beautiful albums i've ever heard, and I don't even understand a single word that's sung! There's not a single bad track on this album, each song makes you not only feel as if you're in Iceland watching the sunrise, but such uplifting, spiritual emotion. Sigur Ros might not be considered "easy listening" to those who are new to them...but once you hear this album, you just don't give a damn. Their music speaks volumes, you FEEL what they're saying, not what they're saying. This album is one of the best albums ever, once again showing how Icelanders sure know how to play their music.
Music never heard describing a place only imagined.......2007-05-12
This is one of the 10 best albums I've ever heard. Cannot recommend this album enough. If you have never heard of Sigur Ros you might want to borrow an album from a friend first but if you have remotely heard of them you know no words can describe their sound, so buy this album now!!!

Beyond the Blues Brothers.......2007-05-12
If you loved "Hold on, I'm Commin'" in the movie "The Blues Brothers" but know little else about Sam & Dave, buy this CD. The quality of the sound is great and the selection even better. The energy of the singers is contagious and the arrangements on the album are superb. As one of their songs has it, "Wrap it up, I'll take it!"
Wow! This is an amazing cd!.......2006-03-17
I was not really into Sam & Dave before I bought this cd. I must say it is excellent. Their interaction with each other is amazing. They really define the 'gospel' based side of RnB which is called, of course, Soul Music. The intense vocal theatrics they exude are truly astonishing. And even better this cd has all of the original singles not the ones that were re-sung by the duo, which still sounded good but were no where near as intense and raw as the originals. The remastering is excellent, job very, very well done. After I heard the 'real' version of "Hold On! I'm Comin'" I was hooked. But the energy and excitement dont end there, they also were exceptional at heavy ballads. Two of the three ballads here are heavy and they really dig into them. It's almost too much to listen to them because the emotion they put forth is earthshattering. It is also very fun to listen to. While listening close to some of the lyrics on some of the songs I laughed a little at what they were talking about, case in point "I take what I want." This is very, very enjoyable and it has made me a Sam & Dave fan for life. I now plan on getting all of their studio albums with Stax. Enjoy!!!
Southern fried soul! SIZZLIN'.......2005-06-14
there was some footage and stuff about these two guys on Soul Deep, the program that followed the evoloution of soul music.
One show was on the Southern Soul sensation and Staxx records.
Basically, Sam and Dave were components, along with Otis, Wilson Pickett and others, that put the raw, unpolished, and dirty sound of Memphis on the map. The band to give em all the rough and sharp edge was Booker T and the MG's. Steve Cropper has become something of a Legend to me over the last few informative years. His guitar can be heard on all of the aforementioned, and characterizes the sound with that chink style and raw licks he manipulated to a new level.
That sound was the perfect tool for Sam and Dave, who were having trouble breaking the scene. The ever resourcful Jerry wexler did what he did with Pickett and gave the boys the Staxx treatment. essentially, if you can't move to this, then your paralized! The one-upmanship is eveident in the chemistry the experience. Seeing them perform is another thing entirely!
Nice sound on the remaster, and ALL the grooves are here for the licking!
Soul at it's funkiest.
Classic, classic, classic.......2005-03-16
You can't consider yourself afficionato of 60s soul music if you do not have Sam and Dave in your collection. Unparralleled horn section backing, the stuff that influenced Blood, Sweat and Tears more than they will ever admit, Sam and Dave were the funky, street-wise and rugged soul music that Motown was too perfectly coiffed and dressed up to do.
HORNS FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-04-16
Summer's near and what better time to celebrate the funk of Sam and Dave, than by purchasing this great collection of music and blaring it on your car stereo with the windows rolled down, so you can expose it to anybody you happen to drive by. Get everyone around you dancing and feeling good!!!!!
A definite A+ as far as greatest hits go. Good remastering, great selection of hits and a mini booklet to boot.
If you love horns, then what are you waiting for??!!
GO BUY IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lead voice of Stax Records' powerhouse soul duo Sam and Dave returns to reclaim his legacy here with a collection of familiar r&b catalog choices framed by slick, decidedly contemporary productions. If the project's crowded supporting cast -- Springsteen, Clapton, Wynonna, Sting, Bon Jovi, Winwood, Paul Rodgers, Mariah Carey, Vince Gill and Billy Gibbons among the most notable -- sometimes makes Moore seem like a guest on his own album, their admittedly marketing-driven presence nonetheless helps showcase a seminal soul artist for an American Idol-smitten generation that seems to have taken him for granted (hardly a surprise that project producer Randy Jackson is best known as an AI judge). Yet Moore's gritty, expressive voice can't be denied on the best of it, whether on the simmering gospel fervor of the Wynonna/Bekka Bramlett/Bebe Winans-seasoned "I Can't Stand the Rain," the bluesy shuffle of "Better To Have and Not Need" with Springsteen joining in the chorus or a soulful "None of Us Are Free" featuring Sting. But, as Fantasia's turn on the unfortunate "Blame It On the Rain" argues, it's also an album whose tracks often frustratingly rise or fall in proportion to the contributions of its guests; less would definitely mean Moore here. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Sam Moore's astonishing solo album that showcases his timeless talent and versatility.
Customer Reviews:
Soul so smooth he sounds like it is as easy as breathing.......2007-07-06
Sam Moore's voice takes you in and keeps you until well after the songs are over. The guests do not overpower him in anyway, they complement him and, yes, the album would have been great without them, but it's full of little treats with them.Vince Gill's tenor,Wynonna, Bon Jovi, Springstein, Winwood, Bramlett (now that woman can sing!). I'm 48 and my daughter is 18. She loves all kinds of rap and soul, and everything else that 18 year olds like, but she loves this album. Everytime we get into the car together she wants to hear Bramlett and Sam on "Don't Play That Song for Me". I only mention this to show that Sam can reach anybody with his soulful voice, he makes it sound so easy, it's just like breathing for him and the man is 71 years old! I hope he does more recording because I'll certainly be standing in line.
Fantastic cd @}->---.......2007-06-12
I am so impressed with this cd. It's great. It's produced by Randy Jackson and it features an impressive list of guest artists. I mean, to have people on your cd like Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Eric Clapton (guitar), Vince Gill and Wynonna Judd to name a few is fantastic.
The music itself is stunning and soothing and I'm totally hooked. I really love Lookin For A Love (with Jon Bon Jovi) and It's Only Make Believe (with Mariah). I can't stop playing this and his voice is as powerful as ever. I really think this cd is one that should have a wide appeal. I love it and I hope you do as much as I do. Go buy a copy.
Just SENSATIONAL.......2007-04-02
A fantastic offering from the real king of Soul and friends every track a winner Sam Moore is still brilliant after all these years , i saw him with Dave back in the sixties and now 40 years later he is still brilliant. buy this "album " you will not be disappointed.
This is an exceptional cd........2007-03-13
This is a fantastic blend of artists and done so well, this cd will easily become one of my favorites. The first time I heard it I knew instantly that I had made a good choice by buying this cd.
Sooo Smooth.......2007-01-13
How great to hear him again, and I especially like his performance with Becca Bramlett, the next generation!

Forget for a moment the rumors that suggest the lead singer of this New York five-piece used to play in a ska outfit called, yes, Skabba the Hut. It's a given that a band that so brazenly apes the Strokes' scratchy vocals, Interpol's deep bass grooves and the Killers' shimmering new wave melodies is hardly concerned about being written off as unfashionably fashionable. In two years time the Bravery could very well be making robotic Afro-Cuban funk albums, or whatever other hipster style happens to be troubling the charts at the time, and it would suit them just fine. Right now, the group has the neo-post-punk thing nailed, complete with warm-fuzzy tunes like "An Honest Mistake" and "Unconditional," that, if nothing else, should at least manage lure a few more bodies onto the dance-floor. -- Aidin Vaziri

Awesome-Rebirth of the 80s-great music!.......2007-06-13
I was a 80s child. This CD is great. Every song is awesome. Since the mid 90s, a lot of music on the market has lacked the "wow" factor. This music does have that 80s/New Wave feel to it. Great bass and guitar riffs. Great keyboard. Great drum. I saw these guys playing for an hour special on Directv. Every song was awesome/a live album would be worth it from this band. This album is more techno/more New Orderish than the second. More dance music. I am 36 years old and I find this one of my favorite CDs.
the sh***ery.......2007-06-03
absolute trash. i was tempted to throw it out the window after hearing the lyric "stop, drop, and roll...you're on fire." even if you can get past the HORRENDOUS lyrics, the rest rest of the songs are mediocre at their best. to compare them to the likes of depeche mode, interpol, or the cure would be an insult to those bands. save yourself the disappointment and get yourself the real deal.
I love this album!!!!!.......2007-05-04
This is one of my favorite CDs of all time. EVERY song is GREAT!!! Do yourself a favor and buy this!!!!!!!
Great CD synthrock at its best.......2007-03-27
This CD is a great addition to anyone's CD library, especially if you're into this particular brand of rock. If you like the Killers, chances are, you'll like the Bravery even more.
Above average Post Punk.......2007-02-20
Ok, we all hate labels, I know, but for the sake of giving you the quick down-and-dirty, I have to say these folks play straight up post-punk, in the same vein as say The Veils, Echo and the Bunnymen, or The Chameleons UK. Unlike another reviewer profiled here, I may be thick as a brick, but I do not hear the Depeche Mode or New Order influence, sorry. Instead, I would describe this band as warmly poppy without the sugar-syrup trappings, musically great guitar hooks and complete with the requisite angst-ridden lyrics. Sure, they're introspectively gloomy, but they manage to side-step the bleakness of the aforementioned synth pop greats (New Order). Finally, of all The Bravery releases, this is their best LP, and you should get it, if only to snag the masterpiece "An Honest Mistake," which should by all means go down as a classic. Overall, this is a great record.

This music is so fiery that merely listening to will bring sweat to your brow. But the creators of such classics as "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming" won't stand just for listening. The energy between Sam and Dave is infectious enough to propel you to your feet. Their harmonies are tight, echoed by thrilling horn riffs, bursts of guitar solos, and when it's all about to explode, they settle back with a ballad like "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" that's every bit as moving as their uptempo tracks. This is what happens when church music goes clubbing. --Robert Gordon

I would love to review the item I ordered, but I never received it, and I have never received a refund!
Nice.......2007-02-06
It's clearly an older disc, and it sounds like they dubbed it straight from the reel. I love that warm sound, especially with music like this.
AND So Much More.......2007-01-10
The world of show business is not a place where shrinking violets bloom. On the contrary, it is known for bombast, opportunism, and egos larger and more gaseous than zeppelins.
Consequently it is rare indeed to find an act featuring two prodigious talents who have chosen to share billing equally. This extraordinary gesture of selflessness is indicated by the word - AND - which links the two names.
A small handful of examples comes to mind where two geniuses are paired. The Captain And Tennille, of course, The Fluorescent Leech And Eddie, and the late lamented duo, Wayland Flowers And Madame who, tragically, died simultaneously.
Add to this distinguished list the names, Sam And Dave. These powerhouse singers, who secured their place in history with a few hits covered by shabby second-stringers, simply define everything that is good about R&B. In fact, if you were beginning an R&B collection, this outstanding CD would be an excellent place to start.
You'll find barnburners like Soul Man and I Thank You, among many others, but you may be surprised how these guys work a ballad. The Best Of Sam AND Dave delivers the goods; and so much more.
We got a good quality one, no "hissing".......2006-11-08
I have this one too - BEST OF SAM & DAVE, and although a couple other reviewers stated that there was hissing on the SOOTHE ME track, my copy does not have hissing or any other sound distortion. On the whole, this collection is a pretty good sampler of their rollin' best.
Sam & Dave CD.......2006-06-26
I got what I ordered. The plastic case was broken. The CD Now preferred buyers club claims to have a link to report this type of claim. The link is a dead end. Service rates a single star. Another disc in the same order also had a broken case. The club should back up their products.

Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12
Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.
Mad World - the one you are looking for.......2007-01-19
It's here, two versions of Mad World by Michael Andrews, lovely piano intro and Neil Young type vocals. Buy it!
It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06
My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!
Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.
Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!
Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24
The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.
good stuff.......2006-08-10
i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

Awesome!.......2007-07-26
I love this CD! It's fun to hear the remakes of familiar Beatles hits done by contemporary artists, in a respectful and classy way. Puts a new spin on an old favorite.
I Am Sam CD.......2006-11-10
Beatle's lyrics combined with today's musical talent. A great combination! If you love the Beatles, you'll love this CD. I keep ordering "one more", it's taking care of a lot of people on my holiday gift giving list!
I AM SAM SOUND TRACK IS GREAT!.......2006-11-04
I REALLY ENJOYED THE MUSIC WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEO AND FELT INCLINED TO BUY THE SOUND TRACK. I AM GLAD I DID. I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTD.
Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21
I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.
Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.
Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".
Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.
Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09
It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.
The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.
The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!
Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."
The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.
Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.
