1 out of 5 stars A Half-album of Labelle Hits / Best of Labelle, Vol. 2; Best of Patti, Vol. 1.......2007-01-04

"Lady Marmalade: The Best of Patti and Labelle" is a 1995 chronological collection of 16 Epic recordings, 8 by Labelle (tracks 1-8, 1974-1976) and 8 from Patti LaBelle's early solo career (tracks 9-16, 1977-1980).

The songs included here are good, but the legacy of the group Labelle deserves better. For a real collection of Labelle hits, see "Something Silver" a collection of songs taken from their first three albums, released 1971-1973 on Warner Bros. and RCA.
Labelle is Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash.

5 out of 5 stars Patti sadly overshadowed by the camp fest of Labelle.......2002-11-17

This excellent compilation of mid to late 70s material draws upon the best of Labelle and Patti's early solo recordings during their Epic years. It is also possibly the place to start for newer fans interested in checking out Patti's legacy before she became a full fledged supper club soul artiste.

The CD is divided equally between Labelle and Patti, the solo artiste. Trouble is, the first half featuring Labelle's best known numbers from their three Epic albums ("Nightbirds", "Phoenix" and "Chameleon") is so energetic, exciting and uniformly excellent they badly overshadow Patti's solo work. Understandably, half the 8 Labelle tracks here (including their #1 smash hit "Lady Marmalade") are extracted from their chart album "Nightbirds", though the quality of these are more than matched by 2 cuts each from "Phoenix" and "Chameleon". "Messing With My Mind" is as tough as "Get Me Somebody New" is funky. Somebody should lobby CBS to release the never-before-reissued "Phoenix" on CD, seeing that both "Nightbirds" and "Chameleon" have long been available in CD format.

Unfortunately, what goes up must come down. After the excitement and camp fest of Labelle, Patti's soft soul MOR ballads which take up the second half of this CD just seems so tame and boring. Apart from the samba styled "Teach Me Tonight", nothing that Patti cut with Epic remotely rivals the work of Labelle. Without the presence of Sarah and Nona to spice things up and lend Labelle its progressive touch, Patti gives in to her own smaltzy and maudlin tendencies and there's plenty of evidence to suggest that this was at work here.

This "best of" in the Legacy series is nevertheless a terrific compilation. Buy it for the two rare-on-CD Labelle tracks from "Phoenix" if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars "GUT BUCKET "SISTA'S".......2002-11-14

PATTI LaBELLE, NONA HENDRIXS & SARAH DASH, ARE THREE SISTA'S FROM THE DAYS OF SOUL! WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC. THE VOCAL BLENDING, THE RYTHYMIC SOUNDS, JUST PURE FUNK 'N SOUL. THIS IS WHAT SINGING WAS ABOUT. NOT, THAT TODAY'S MUSIC ISN'T GOOD, BUT IT CAN'T MATCH NOTE FOR NOTE...SCREAM FOR SCREAM...PUTTING YOUR HEART IN IT!! LaBELLE WAS THIS TYPE OF ARTIST. JUST LISTEN TO: "WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU", OR "MESSING WITH MY MIND";..."THERE'S NO MORE TO SAY..."

3 out of 5 stars Just a minor correction.......2002-03-02

Lady Marmalade was not written by Patti Labelle even though many people are giving her credit for it. She was covering the song that was written and performed by Kenny Nolan and Bob Crewe of The Eleventh Hour.

4 out of 5 stars THE MOULIN ROUGE QUEEN OF SOUL !.......2001-06-09

This song was made in the 70s but, Mya,Pink,Christina Aguilera, and Lil' Kim and permission to copy Patti Labelle's hit song "Lady Marmalade". The song remade by the young talented artists did the movie for the movie "Moulin Rouge".

3 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: LADY OF THE NIGHT (1974).......2006-11-16

What is there to say about Donna Summer? Well, I most certainly can say that Donna Summer is the Queen of Disco, that is without a doubt. It was in 1974 that Donna Summer released her debut album entitled, LADY OF THE NIGHT. This album was not received well at all here in the states, but it did see success over in Germany, France, Belgium, and The Netherlands. In my opinion, the album could have been a lot better than France, Germany, and Belgium made it out to be. The album is not bad, but it does not match up to her albums of the future.

LADY OF THE NIGHT
The first single from the album. This track, obviously being the album's title track, is basically the only song that I really favor from the album. It sort of sounds a little bit like that old song entitled, "Under The Boardwalk". A really catchy song.

BORN TO DIE
Okay.

FRIENDS
Okay.

DOMINO
Hate it.

THE HOSTAGE
Great.

WOUNDED
Okay.

LITTLE MISS FIT
Okay.

LET'S WORK TOGETHER NOW
Hate it.

SING ALONG (SAD SONG)
Very nice.

As I said before, I really wish that this album could have been a lot better than what France and Germany and The Netherlands had made it out to be. But all in all, it really isn't that bad of an album. Besides, this is just Donna's first album. There are many more albums under Donna's belt, albums that have definitely surpassed this here Donna Summer debut.

4 out of 5 stars The beginning of a long hot Summer!!.......2005-10-06

My introduction to this album was in the early 80s. I watched Donna sing `Lady of the night' on reruns of The James Last Show (a German TV show), and our vinyl LP of `Love to love you baby' had `The hostage' tacked on as a bonus track. I didn't get to hear the entire album until 2000 when I found it in the UK. I half expected some dud but this turned out to be rather good.

`Lady of the night' was Donna Summer's European debut, written largely by Pete Bellotte, and produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, the singles found some success in Belgium, Germany, and a few other European countries.

More in a folk/rock/pop vein, and sung in Donna's real voice, it was miles away from her later stuff; the breathy cooing disco of `Love to love you baby', `A love trilogy' et all.

A number of the songs tell stories. The midtempo `Domino' with its jangly guitars tells the tale of meeting a tall mysterious masked stranger at a dance. The dramatic half spoken/half sung `The hostage' with ringing phones and a catchy chorus tells the story of a kidnap gone awry. The big band sound of `Lady of the night' tells the story of a Parisienne lady of the night, years before `Bad girls'. The ballad `Friends' (with do wop sounding backing vocals) is a tale of childhood friends grown up, and one wants to be more than just friends.

Other standouts are the frenetic piano driven `Wounded' featuring a fiery vocal performance and some screeching guitars. Like an Elton John rocker. The (almost corny) ballad `Let's work together' asks `why can't we all get along' and features some dreamy backing vocals in the chorus. The almost ABBA like `Sad song' and the rocker `Born to die' are really brought to life by Donna's vocals. Like a reviewer pointed out, these are simple, almost ordinary songs, transformed by Donna's vocals, astounding in range and power even at this young age.

After this album, Donna Summer would go on to conquer the world selling millions of singles and albums, and winning Grammys in 4 different categories. This is where it all started. Essential to every diehard Summer fan. Make sure you get the copy with the original cover art shown here and not the awful red/orange reissue.

4 out of 5 stars pleasantly suprised.......2005-03-30

I am a diehard Donna Summer fan but i have waited to buy this cd to fill up the void that we fans go through when we continue to wait for new material. So i was jonesing for something new and gave in. I love it...donna's voice is what shines here. She can truley sing anything and this disc proves this once again. Its really a short album but fun. Domino & wounded stand out for me. if you are curious i suggest you purchase this and get a glimpse of something of what might have happened had disco not exploded with love to love you baby!!!ummer...yet....

3 out of 5 stars FOR FANS ONLY.......2004-01-14

I think this was her first album. Never released in the states, I picked this up on a trip to Vienna. It was a must-buy. It sure did surprise me. The music is closer to that on "The Wanderer" than "Bad Girls". Not a trace of disco to be found. "Born to Die' is a chugging little rocker that could have been a hit, in my opinion back in the 70's. "Hostage" is a story song that really should never have been put on record. The title song is really nice. "Let's Work Together" is another good song. Really the songs on this album are really not that memorable, but still I am glad I bought it. I was the envy of a few people that love Donna and did not know of this cd's existence.

4 out of 5 stars A REVELATION!.......2001-03-31

This 1974 pre-Love to Love You Baby album is a real eye-opener! Donna's voice would not sound this clear and strong again for several years, which helps you to better understand why she expressed some frustration at being pigeon-holed as a disco artist. Don't get me wrong, NO ONE is a bigger fan of Donna's disco classics than I am, but the formula did tend to limit her to a lot of whispering, cooing and groaning, at least in the beginning. Here, the voice rules, even when the songs can't compare--which is often, unfortunately. Many of the songs are standard '70s pop drivel (sorry, Giorgio), like some of what Olivia Newton-John might have been stuck recording at the time (no offense to ONJ either). "The Hostage" ranks right up there with other story-songs like "Timothy" and "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" (you decide if that's a good or bad thing!), but "Let's Work Together Now" and especially "Lady of the Night" hint at themes we'd be hearing more of later. A must-have for serious fans of the diva (a title bestowed these days on WAY too many less talented gals; hello Britney, Christina and Beyonce), and an interesting listen for music historians too.

3 out of 5 stars Two atypical albums from Mendes.......2005-12-29

These two albums, originally released on Elektra in 1975 and 1979, are not for those looking for the classic Brasil '66 sound that introduced most people to the genius of Sergio Mendes.

By the time Mendes joined Elektra in 1975 and released his self-titled album (the first 10 tracks on this CD), he had long ago kissed the classic Brasil '66 sound goodbye. But this first Elektra album was a big surprise to a lot of people--it was really Sergio's first all out foray into soul territory, something he would continue to develop for his entire 70s Elektra output, probably not solely because of the use of his first African American vocalist, Sondra Catton (the incredible Carol Rogers would soon join him and become his longest-serving vocalist). Sergio obviously saw the handwriting on the wall--the Bossa Nova years were over and he needed to find new directions to stay alive in the ever-changing pop music marketplace. "Sergio Mendes" was actually Sergio's biggest hit, album wise, in years, though it failed to produce a hit single. However, there are some standout tunes, notably "Davy" and "The Trouble With Hello is Goodbye."

"Magic Lady" is, to most long-time Mendes fans, the nadir of his career, an obvious attempt to blend the patented Mendes rhythm section with disco music. While there are, again, some great tunes--"I'll Tell You," "Lonely Woman" and "A Dream Come True"--there are also songs that many find cringe-worthy. The sad part is, the album is Sergio's only collaboration with Tower of Power, and the horn charts are amazing. The material, sadly, is not up to the players and singers (including the aforementioned Carol Rogers). The CD mastering of "Magic Lady" unfortunately does not repair the hideous original LP mastering, which makes the entire album sound like it is emanating from a small cardboard box.

For those who are interested in seeing how Sergio adapted his trademark sound to a new audience, these two albums will prove instructive and enjoyable. If you're looking for the smooth, sophisticated sound of Brasil '66, you'd better keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars Mendes "covers" and dons some platform shoes!.......2005-08-22

This re-issue is a compilation of two distinct albums of Mendes's releases from the 1970's. The first ten songs come from the musician/arranger's self-titled album, an homage to songs made famous by others. Three songs written by Stevie Wonder ("All in Love is Fair," "I Believe When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever," and "Lookin' for Another Pure Love") are featured, along with George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun". The compositions of Thom Bell and Linda Creed (of Philadelphia sound fame) are reflected in the cover of "Let Them Work it Out".

The best cuts are the remake of Donnie Hathaway's classic "Someday We'll All Be Free" and "The Trouble With Hello is Goodbye," a song reminiscent of Mendes's earlier "When Summer Turns to Snow" from the 60's.

Five stars are given to this release.

1979's "Magic Lady" was Mendes's attempt to get on the "disco bandwagon". "I'll Tell You," the first track on the initial release (#11 here), was a minor dance hit and it is symbolic of the sound of the era: throbbing bass lines, kinky percussion accompaniments, and monotonous "chants" from the background singers. Though the album features a powerhouse of talented musicians (Tom Scott, Michael Sembello, Oscar Neves, and the Tower of Power Horn Section), it never ascends beyond the average.

And for that it only gets three stars.

The best cut is "A Dream Come True (Can't Hardly Wait)".

3 out of 5 stars Problematic recording, so order with care........2007-03-16

I rated the recent Ross release "Blue" five stars, on the strength of the deeply felt, dead-on Billie Holiday-haunted readings of songs like "But Beautiful" and "Easy Living." Some of the same qualities are in evidence on this recording, which suffers from some programming miscalculations and production problems or mis-judgments. Using "Fine and Mellow" as a flag-waver, first as an opener, then as a finale reprise, is just plain, well, ridiculous. Billie Holiday sang few 12-bar blues songs, and "Fine and Mellow" was always delivered effortlessly, intimately, and "naturally"--like the flowering of a gardenia. Whoever selected the song for its present position in the program and moreover encouraged Diana to adopt a "blues-belting" form of elocution ("Gimme a Pigfoot" is another example) must have been born yesterday.

The former R&B diva reveals her strengths on the ballads, all of them, with the exception of the two R&H tunes, right out of Lady Day's prime-time repertoire. Moreover, not only is she accompanied by the A Team, but she generously recognizes the contribution of each soloist--Roy Hargrove, Ralph Moore, Urbie Green, Jon Faddis.

I ordered this CD on the strength of "Blue," but it appears not to be a remastered edition. If the latest edition somehow managed to give more "presence" to Diana's voice (she sounds like she's singing in Madison Square Garden to a listener in the nose-bleed seats), and if some of the audience noise was reduced or eliminated (especially when the outbursts seem to bear no relation to what is heard and are intrusive on a song's meaning), then this disk rates 4 stars.

Lesson: Order with care (mine was even a brand new, sealed copy), and don't order this one ahead of "Blue."

One last quibble: Where in the world did the title "Stolen Moments" come from? To any knowledgeable listener it's the title of Oliver Nelson's classic jazz standard. But since the song doesn't appear on the program, the title (one of three on the album cover) appears to be another fumble by a clueless team with too many players on the field.

    4 out of 5 stars Good---and it gets better!.......2004-05-31

Diana takes on Billie Holidays's works in this live set, and she acquits herself well. The audience seems particularly receptive, Diana sounds like she's having a good time and the results are pleasant. But then, after Ross does "God Bless the Child," soon followed by "Strange Fruit," done virtually accapella, the mood changes and, suddenly, things become absolutely superb. She starts to dig deep into the songs, she swings more, and the set becomes touching, beautiful and moving. There is a little too much echo on Ross's voice, but the band sounds great and there is a delightful short solo by Ron Carter, to boot. This is a heck of a collection.

5 out of 5 stars Little Girl Blue Captured Live In New York City.......2003-11-16

"Diana Ross is a fine singer. All you have to do is listen to her Billie Holiday stuff! It's marvellous!" (Marvin Gaye).
With time - two decades after the film - these songs have matured wonderfully in Diana's voice and touching reading. The concept is like good wine - it just gets better with time.
She is still the greatest and most prominent performer of Holiday's songs and the Lady Sings the Blues segment remains an emotionally and artistic highlight in any concert she does. However, this is a rare chance to hear all the songs performed and recorded exclusively in a one-night-only concert at The Reds nightclub in New York City. The songs are really comfortable in N.Y. and they are certainly comfortable with Miss Ross and her great band. This is a fine and very wholesome CD - highly recommanded to any fan of Diana Ross and Jazz/Blues/Standards.

5 out of 5 stars Chasing Natalie Cole.......2002-08-21

I waited until 2002 to pick this up because I guessed Ms. Ross was jealous of Natalie Cole's Grammy winning jazz performanc. (I have the remastered version) However, I could tell Ms. Ross really enjoyed doing this live performance and I give it 5 stars because the technical recording is stellar. Otherwise Ross brings a delightfully dainty mood to these selected Billy Holliday tunes. Curiously the CD follows Holliday history. The arrangements are oddly melodic as if they took on Ross'light approach to each song. It took a lot of nerve to push up on "Strange Fruit" with little to no initial acompaniment, but she pulls it off with grace and magnificence; and, I agree Ross is not Billie (who is???) but she is definitely the Boss. This musical project was very well done with Roy Hargrove et al in her band blazing away. I think the arranger, Gil Askey, and the engineers deserve much credit because this is a splendid effort. You may not like Diana Ross but denying her talent as a singer (this was really beautiful) and, and, and as a producer will no longer sit with me without an argument. Being an avant garde jazz fan that last line sounds strange, even to me!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous album, especially for summertime listening.......2002-07-15

Let me start by saying that I have never been a Diana Ross fan. In her days with the Supremes she often sang flat, and her 1972 "Lady Sings the Blues" film was a disaster in attempting jazz style. Yet in this 1992 live recording, she almost makes up for that earlier faux pas completely. To quote Jim Ignatowski from "Taxi," she "musta took lessons!" Her voice here rides the beat in a beautiful, relaxed, velveteen manner; her phrasing is flawless and her back-up band equally relaxed and in the groove (though trumpeter Jon Faddis seems bent on showing off his chops, not following her moods very well). Most of the all-star jazz musicians who back her, including Roy Hargrove and Urbie Green, sound fabulous, the layout and pacing of the concert is superb, and Ross delivers what I feel is the performance of her lifetime. Granted, she still sounds a little shallow singing "Strange Fruit" next to Billie, but what the heck. Long before this set is over you will be caught up in the mood of the evening and swaying along with her relaxed, on-the-mark singing. This is one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Wait For The Re-Release Expanded Edition.......2006-07-16

People hold on.... there will be a re-release of this cd in remastered expanded edition coming soon from Hip-O Select, just like the newly remastered expanded re-release of Wild & Peaceful that came out in 2005. So don't spend hundreds of dollars for the old Lady T unmastered version when you can get the new one for around $20. Hip-O Select will also be releasing a cd of unreleased material dating from 1983 that she recorded for Motown, but was never released commercially til now. So for all you big Lady T fans, hold on, the best is yet to come!

5 out of 5 stars I play this Cd alot!.......2005-06-20

Can it be love? is one of my all time favorite songs! I love Lady T, have since her Wild and Peaceful debut! I've hunted down and repurchased every album I had in CD form, she is the centerpiece of my entire collection...or should I say the root of my soul collection! No one sings like this lady..and I do mean no one!

Now $289 is a little steep, considering I got my copy of this Cd for $4.99 at a CD warehouse! This Cd in its entirety is superb! Every single song!

5 out of 5 stars $289 USED?? You gotta be kidding me?!.......2005-06-10

Now I'm as big a Teena fan as anyone else BUT $289 for used Lady T cds???!!! Circuit City sells copies of this cd all day long for $9.99.

    5 out of 5 stars Shockingly Excellent!!.......2005-03-23

'Lady T' is Teena Marie's second release. Her 1979 debut album was a great demonstration of her vocal skills but was lacking in the songwriting department.Luckily (if sadly) Teena emmerged here from the tight production grip of Rick James and took over much of the songwriting duties herself, working with producer Richard Randolph (widower of Minnie Ripperton-to whom this album is dedicated. The result is an album that has alot more flavor and vitality then her debut.
Teena gets things started with the pounding
"Behind The Groove",one her her most verulant uptempo tunes ever-filled with deep bass and howling horns over a beat that never takes it's eye off the one!The ballads included on this album are a vast improvement over her first-"Now That I Have You","Can It Be Love" and "Why Did I Have To Fall In Love With You" all merge pop-R&B hooks and choruses with Marie's fluid,
emmotionally charged delivery-the result being the concoction of her classic ballad style. The deeply soulful and midtempo
"Aladdin's Lamp" features some of the finest singing and writing
I've heard her do,plus terrific piano work."Lonely Desire" and
"Young Girl In Love" are both extra lean funk grooves built around phat, pounding bass synthesizers and Lady T's vocal magic.
The album ends with "Too Many Colors",in which Teena Marie gently discusses racial harmony with a questioning child-it's a beautiful little number set to chilling orchestration.
Again it's important to state that 'Lady T' is a heads and tails artistic improvement compared to the previous years 'Wild And Peaceful'.She would release another album in 1980 that was yet even more stylistically diverse and
compedant then this, which is alot to say considering the extra high quality of this album.Wheather it be because she was desperate to avoid sophmore slump or she'd stopped trying to be a Rick James soundalike this is a major leap forward in terms of overall quality. The material is more soulful and funky-even if it does eschew the usual jazz and Brazillian musical influences she usually has. This is one of the sure fire reasons why Teena Marie is an oft forgotton candadite for the best new
female soul singer of the 80's,regardless of race or color. And taken with that the special qualities of albums like this.
