As with their last hit, Elephunk, Black Eyed Peas' new disc Monkey Business is a joyful cross-genre journey with musical props to hip-hop, rock, folk, funk, and pop. The reason the Black Eyed Peas have audience appeal that crosses over many styles is because the band members are such obvious fans of diverse music. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Monkey Business's high-profile guest list. After Justin Timberlake's contribution to the massive "Where Is the Love" breakout hit from Elephunk, their inclusion of big names once again was a smart, respectful move on the part of the band as well as their guests. "My Style" is Timberlake's BEP foray number two; while the song is funky pop fun, those looking to hear Justin in the forefront are likely to be disappointed, as his vocals are mixed evenly, no sweet soulful solos this time. Other guests of note are Jack Johnson, who cowrote the bling-bashing "Gone Going," Sting on "Union" (sonically inspired by the former Police-man's "Englishman in New York"), while funk legend James Brown contributes to a scorching soul track dubbed "They Don't Want Music." The contribution of female vocalist Fergie--who joined the band partway through their last CD--has raised up considerably on the band's fourth disc, their second as a quartet. Sassily fronting her way through songs like "My Humps," the "Hey Mama"-esque "Dum Diddly" and the first single "Don't Phunk With My Heart," Fergie's melodic contributions make for a record that will likely be heard by wider audiences than ever, making this a truly accessible `hip-pop' CD. --Denise Sheppard

4 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-03-13

This is just a fun CD. It makes you want to dance.
We listen to this in the Operating Room and it makes the atmosphere less tense.

5 out of 5 stars NOTHING LESS THAN 5 STARS.......2007-02-13

New to this genre, I am blown away! Variety, beat, talent... I can not get to my other cds. CAN NOT agree with other unimpressed reviewers. Listen once, listen twice... Listen to that complex music and those words!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2007-01-31

I got this a a gift, so at first I was not sure if I wanted to keep it of sell it, as I am not really a BEP fan. In all honesty I know very little about this band, a song or two here and there. I decided to keep it and give it a try, I don't like the popular "hits" that much from this album, but was suprised at some of the really good album tracks. The players are very good on this album. There is a real sense of old school funk here that I really like.
I guess you never know what you will like till you give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Throw a Party!!!!.......2005-11-02

If you want the excitement and dancing to start, throw in this album. I must say, everytime I throw a party, this album is THE FAVORITE!! You won't go wrong with the Classic Funk sounds of Classic Funk artists. Trust me, you'll think if this album everytime you want to GET DOWN!!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD Changed My Life!!!.......2005-06-08

I vividly remember walking into Circuit City six years ago and picking up this CD out of morbid curiosity. At the time, I was fifteen years old, and had spent most of my life listening to mainstream oldies radio. I had been exposed to copious amounts of Motown, which I love passionately to this very day, but other than the polished arrangements of Motown and Northern Soul, I had never really been introduced to black popular music from this era.

When I got home that day and flipped this disc, my life was changed forever. The thumping bass, screeching brass, and thundering drums woke me up to a musical style that was wholly different from anything I had ever experienced. The Ohio Players, Parliament Funkadellic, Roger & Zapp, etc. raised the bar for what could be done with a live band and a groovy hook. If you want to know what musical pioneers were directly responsible for hip-hop and rap (a musical genre that I've only recently come to respect and appreciate), look no further than this fabulous compilation.

I would recommend this CD for anybody who ever believed that nothing musically worthwhile originated in the 1970's, or for those who may be put off by inevitable comparisons between funk and disco. The bands on this disc pack such a wallop that their role in the history of popular music is as unquestionable as it was pivotal in the transition from traditional R&B to hip-hop and G-funk. And, speaking personally, this is definitely one of my top ten "Desert Island Disc" picks. I can't imagine a more wonderful way to spend the rest of my life than on a secluded tropical paradise, blaring George Clinton from a good strong sub-woofer.

5 out of 5 stars Bring on the funk.......2002-12-20

Every song on this CD had me singing along with the songs that I remember from so long ago. This is one of the best various artist CDs on the market. Every last one of these songs is vintage funk. There is no filler on this CD, its all great music that will have toes tapping, feet stomping and butts shaking.

5 out of 5 stars Source of many a rap rip-off or sample.......2000-07-10

This CD is definitely one of the best party and driving CDs in my collection. It's kinda like going back in time and finding a long-lost soul station somewhere down south. Every track here is a classic - it's fun to play this CD for someone who just heard a great 'original' rap song and play the funk song it was swiped from! The music here shows lack of originality in some of today's R&B; it also shows the creativity of many of the 70's and 80's funksters, even if some of them only had a couple of hits. This CD is guaranteed to liven up your next party or get together - so much better than many of the tired, safe as skim milk, moldy oldies compilations found at too many baby boomer parties today.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC MUSIC.......2000-04-20

Nowadays When You See what's out now you can't imagine Listening to Most Of The Stuff that's Out Now in 20 years.but Here is Music that you can Groove To for the Next Many,Many,Many Years&it will never Lose it's Groove.it is a Fantastic VOyage had by all that Bop on this.

4 out of 5 stars Part of the soundtrack of my high school years.......2006-06-23

I was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school when "Be My Lover" started burning up the U.S. charts toward the end of 1995, and I loved every second of that song: Eurodance-pop perfection, bolstered by the catchy "La-da-da-dee-da-da-da-da" hook and the powerful diva voice of the late Melanie Thornton. As I recall, most radio stations played the edited version without Lane's rap, without which the song seems kind of empty (even though it is cheesy: "Like Boyz II Men I'm on bended knee"... sorry, that line makes me giggle). As much as this song simply smokes, the extended mix which also got some radio play on "mix shows" and the like is even better.
Anyway, when I bought this album I expected an album's worth of songs in the same Eurodance style which I had grown to know and love thanks to Real McCoy, 2 Unlimited, Fun Factory, and (remember "The Rhythm Of The Night?") Corona. To my surprise, there were some slow jams here too! Despite being well-sung by Melanie, as is everything here, the slow jams - especially "I'll Be There" (which is NOT the Jackson Five/Mariah Carey classic) - aren't as memorable as the dancefloor thumpers. "Be My Lover," the title song, "I Love To Love" and "The Heat Is On" are all red-hot, catchy, well-crafted Eurodance classics. And it is the talents of Melanie Thornton that make them really special. In the hands of any other singer these songs wouldn't sound nearly as hot. There's also "Where Do You Go," which is ALMOST the same song that became a hit in 1996 for the Cuban-American trio No Mercy - I say "almost" because the verses are different. Equally fun is Le Click's "Tonight Is The Night," a #89 Hot 100 hit in 1995. (Of course, after Melanie and Lane McCray got together as La Bouche, Le Click continued on with a new singer named Kayo Shekoni who was sort of a soundalike for Melanie, and scored a Top 40 hit in 1997 with "Call Me.")
And there's an oldie here too - that would be "Fallin' In Love," the Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds #1 hit from 1975. The album version is a nice, breezy, mid-tempo pop tune that wouldn't sound out of place on adult contemporary radio. It's certainly far superior to the horrid Eurodance remix that was issued to radio stations after the success of "Be My Lover" and "Sweet Dreams." Actually, "Fallin' In Love" was originally La Bouche's first single in the United States in 1995, but it flopped, getting into the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" chart for a few weeks and then vanishing. When it was re-promoted to radio the following year, RCA did not re-release the single and CHR stations played it as an album cut (though most of them, unfortunately, played the remix, which was not all that bad on its own, but was horrible compared to the album version).

In short, this is a more-than-competent survey of the mid-1990s Eurodance sound, with a pair of big hit singles and a few extras as well. La Bouche injected some soul into the Euro beats and came up with a winner. Rest in peace, Melanie, you are still missed.

5 out of 5 stars A cd that makes you dream!.......2005-10-04

Who hasn't danced even once with the big smash hit ''be my lover'' way back in 1995? And who hasn't dreamt by listening to the hit ''sweet dreams''? The unique voice of Melanie Thornton - tragically gone in a plane crash in Zurigh in 2001 - along with the rap rhymes of Lane McCray make a combination of passion, adrenaline and of course ... dancing!! Beautiful melodic songs, such as ''fallinf in love'', ''i'll be there'' and ''nice n' slow'', dance hits like ''where do you go'', ''i love to love'', ''the heat is on'', along with one beautiful ballad - ''do you still need me?''and the 2 smash hits we just talked about. The cd ends with 2 great remixes of ''be my lover'' and ''fallin' in love'', plus another big hit ''tonight is the night'', which mysteriously isn't enclosed in the 2001 compilation ''greatest hits'' of the group. A cd that everybody who loves dance music should have. The group may not exist anymore, but will always be remembered, especially Melanie.

5 out of 5 stars This Is Worth Every Penny!.......2005-08-04

Surely the asking price is not too high for something as good as this. I would have paid double for it. Great for the club or a party scene, and great for driving. Just don't get too into it and speed too much.

4 out of 5 stars More Beat For Your Buck (4 Stars).......2004-09-02

Music like this is usually too corny for me to even come close to giving it a chance, but I showed up to my sister's apartment one day and she was playing this CD. By the time I left her place, I was sweaty from all the dancing I was doing. I am by no means a convert, but I do give credit where credit is due. I don't know much about house/trance/dance music, but from what I've heard on this CD and from what I've been told, this is one of the better dance albums out there. A year ago I saw it at a store and bought it used for $1.00 (what a country). There are a lot of great dance tracks on this album and there are some terrible tracks on this album. When the group tries to do ballads like "I'll Be There" and "Do You Still Need Me", they come off as very cheesy attempts to "get deep". Thankfully, those kinds of songs are kept to a minimum. The strength of this album (obviously) are the dance/house tracks. There are house music staples like "Sweet Dreams", "Where Do You Go", and "Be My Lover" on here that make this CD worth the money on their own. They also follow up these classics with strong dance tracks like "Be My Lover (House Mix)", "I Love To Love", "Fallin' In Love (Spike Mix)", "Le Click: Tonight Is The Night", and "The Heat Is On". Great songs like "Nice N Slow" and "Fallin' In Love" have an R&B flavor to them and they help to even things out. Overall, I'd have to say that this album is pretty good. It's not a classic album by any means, but there are some classic dance joints on this album. It has some obvious holes in it, but it's still worth the money if you can find it at a good price. It's sad that lead singer Melanie died in that plane crash back in 2001, but she left behind some great music that will get your body moving. It's always hard to see people go when so much potential is left unfulfilled.

Standout Tracks: Be My Lover, I Love To Love, Where Do You Go (My Favorite), Le Click: Tonight Is The Night, The Heat Is On, Fallin' In Love, Sweet Dreams, Nice N' Slow, Fallin' In Love (Spike Mix), and Be My Lover (House Mix)

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC EURODANCE............2004-08-29

La Bouche was the most played band in Europa in the 90's when i went to nights clubs at this period (I'm 29),Then i was surprised when i hear it recently on a CHR Florida radio Station:It's a gold eurodance band !

This was one of three steel drum CD's purchased recently, and was the best of all. Great sounds...clear with good acoustics. Sounds really mellow coming from the speakers in our back yard paradise. Very authentic Caribbean sound. Just what we were looking for to give our outdoor entertaining a fun atmosphere.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of New Orleans Songs.......2007-05-12

This is a great collection of songs for people who are from New Orleans or for people who love New Orleans and miss it. It has almost all of the classic Mardi Gras themed songs, and it flows really well.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2007-05-10

No contest = if you buy one Mardi Gras CD - this is it. Orginal recordings and great original sound. This is the one Mardi Gras CD that I give to friends - where ever they live. Listen to the samples, if that doesn't do it for you, God bless you.

5 out of 5 stars good all around .......2006-07-07

Enjoyed this cd very much.. It had more cajun than i expected and was glad.

4 out of 5 stars Love That Jazz Man.......2002-02-15

This is a very delectable sampling of many rockin' New Orleans Jazz flavored tunes. Some of the songs are performed by such rock n roll legends like Dr. John and The Neville Brothers. Others are from more soulful artists like Madri Gras Mambo by the Hawkettes. Sill others are percussion driven like Little Liza Jane and Meet De Boys On The Battlefront. And of course there are plenty of great brass and keyboard arrangements to keep any jazz fan happy.

Whereas many of these artists were not legends in the annals of music history, their contributions to this disc are certainly very good. This is a very appropriate party tape for ayoung hip crowd especially if your are anywhere near the Bayou. Goes nice with some Crawfish, Jambalaya, and a beer or two.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome and fun.......2000-01-23

This has been the star of several parties for us. A real good time mood maker. Great for Mardi Gras parties! Buy it, you won't be sorry.

1 out of 5 stars THIS SUCKS!!.......2006-08-01

You're led to believe that these are the full-length hits when you play them, but DONT BE FOOLED!! They are chopped up shortened versions of the original hits!! FAME by David Bowie has about 2 min taken out, and the great guitar riff at the end of the Lynard Skynard "Freebird" tune is chopped off at the end . .A RIP OFF!!!

4 out of 5 stars classic rock.......2006-03-18

I enjoyed the CD. Was dissapointed that the Hocus Pocus song Focus was an edited version and not the full song. Other that that it was great!

This is a very great cd. I love this cd it is my favorite cd of all time and it rocks. it has great songs on it like We will we will rock you and songs like it. This is they best cd in the world. it rocks out loud.

4 out of 5 stars Would have been 5+ if..........2001-08-23

Listening through I thought that this has got to be the best classic rock compilation that I have ever heard. Just about every tune belongs except "Joy To the World", which seems a little out of place. Why only 4 stars? Because they shortened my favorite song, FREEBIRD. If you listen, you'll notice that they took out a good chunk out of the guitar solos at the end. They should have kept the length and cut out JOY TO THE WORLD. If so, it would have been 5+++++++.

3 out of 5 stars Too Scattershot To Be Truly Representative.......2001-05-09

By calling this a "Classic Rock Party" one must interpret "rock" rather loosely. This collection includes pop ("Joy to the World"), folk-rock ("Sister Golden Hair"), and even a novelty song (the yodelling "Hocus Pocus") in addition to classic 70's rock--all of these songs were released between 1970 and 1978.

Rhino's other releases in their Millenium series usually focused on a specific genre. When you're doing a hip-hop, funk or doo wop collection, you can do an adequate job even though you may be covering a decade of music. When your category is as broad as classic rock (whatever that means), your song selection doesn't hold together very well.

These were all popular songs and all of them reached the Top 40, except "Aqualung," which was never released as a single. And why wasn't "Eighteen" or "School's Out" used in place of Alice Cooper's "No More Mr. Nice Guy"? As for some of the other song selections, Rhino appears to have simply decided to save some money on licensing fees by recycling songs from its Top Rock Hits series.

Overall, this is a very listenable collection with terrific sound and informative liner notes. But unless you specifically looking for some of these songs, why not simply tune in to your local classic rock radio station?

I really like this Cd, it's a classic, with the title track to be one of those that will live forever. I think Stereo MC's are also worth checking out for some of their other, underrated work.

From the OBJECTIVE reviewer...the perfect melting pot of rap and funk. It's impossible to skip over even one track on this CD.

3 out of 5 stars A little unimaginative... but better than I expected........2006-02-23

Bought this CD for one track (connected)... a little early 90s nostalgia.

Not exactly one of my all time favorites, but a good CD for cleaning the house...

3 out of 5 stars Good Driving Music.......2005-09-23

I must say the only reason why I initially bought this album was because of the nostalgia of "Connected" and "Step It Up". After listening to the album though, I was pleased to discover a few gems like "Ground Level", "Playing With Fire" and "Pressure". But unfortunately those are the only songs that really stick out. The rest is just background lounge music. That said, this is still a decent album to listen to - especially on a long drive. I would have given this 2 stars out of 5, but I had to give it an extra star solely on the basis that this it is undeniably quite a creative and original record.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-07-26

I love the Stereo MC's because they provide me with what I feel is missing from most other Hip Hop & Hip Hop influenced Pop and that's good musical production, a variety of sounds and instruments, vocals & lyrics that don't rely on blatant swearing and mindless lyrics about "bitches and hoes", crime, drugs, etc...

I like all the tracks except 3, and the only thing I dont like about track 5 & 13 is the female vocals. My favourites are 1, 7 & 11. By the way, if you like these guys, you might also want to check out the Fun Lovin' Criminals.

    Album Description

It all happened so quickly. Or so it seems. One day Sheed, Meany and Fat were grease monkeys at a makeshift garage in their Bowen Homes neighborhood, the next they were swiftly-rising hip-hop stars, progenitors of a growing musical movement they call ``hood rock.'

But like most overnight successes, Shop Boyz's rise to fame took many years. Cousins Demetrius "Meany" Hardin and Richard "Fat" Stephens grew up with best friend Rasheed "Sheed" Hightower in the notorious Bankhead area of Atlanta, the stomping ground of some of the city's most successful hip-hop artists. They worked on cars, hustled, did whatever they could to make ends meet and when their work was done for the day, they turned to their true passion: making music. Their unique, groundbreaking style didn't go unnoticed.

Within four months of its release, "Party Like A Rockstar" set off a frenzy of activity at radio and clubs throughout the southeast and spread like wildfire across the country. The electrifying song with its contagious hook appeals to the spirited, carefree rocker in all of us - from school children and working class dads to hard-core hip-hoppers and blue-haired, Mohawk-wearing Punk Rockers. From note one, excited fans begin strumming air guitars, crowd surfing and building mosh pits that rival those of any major rock concert.

It was the perfect introduction to their unique brand of music. As for their definition of the newly-created sub-genre known as `hood rock, Sheed says, "It's got energy and a rock feel to it but at the same time it's all about rocking the club, getting the club charged up.

Shop Boyz's debut CD, "Rock Star Mentality," is a sampling of the creativity and diversity that go into each and every song that this creative collective churns out. Whether they're flossing and having fun on a track like "My Car" or showing respect for their ladies on "She Knows," Shop Boyz tell new stories in new and exciting ways. "Rain Dance," a sure standout, is bound to inspire some new moves on the dance floor. "It's a lot of energy," says Meany. "I think people are gonna like it because you gotta dance to it. It's another movement." And a group favorite, "Rollin'," is a track the guys swear is actually hotter than their blazing "Party Like A Rockstar."

5 out of 5 stars Way Ahead Of Its Time!!! Best R&B Album Ever Made!!!.......2007-01-23

This cd is 10 plus years old and easily blows out todays music. I had some cats come up and ask me who is that your playing in your system? And I'm like "JODECI". They couldn't believe how old it was and still sounds up to date. These guys had to be in there early 20's. They said they were going to go and pick it up the same day they heard it. I told them that its so old that they would have to special order it. So they offered to buy it off of me. I sold to them right there on the spot for $30. But of course I had a extra copy at home. It is that good that I kept 2 copys. Tracks 6 thru 21 are insane. Devante put his foot down on these tracks non-stop. I've been crazy over this cd since the day and year it came out. I remember I waited in my car for Hastings (store) to open up and I have never been pleased so much over a cd. And I collect alot of music. I'd say I have about 400 cd's and if I had to choose a favorite this would be the one. I have all the Jodeci cds and this is the best one by far!!!! Get it while it is still not so hard to find. You"ll love it. Basically when this cd came out in 95 it was way, way ahead of its time!! So if they were to re-release this cd today for the new generation it would probably be very much up to date. Oh yea I love all the interludes on this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars jodeci's most complete album!!.......2006-03-30

this album from beginning to end is one of the best r&b albums of all time. Devante Swing is absolutely off the chain on this one. If you like upbeat songs then you like the first half of the cd, When you want to slow it down you got 11 thru 22. my personal favorite tracks are time & place, lets do it all, and can we flo. It's even hard to really pinpoint a favorite track because the whole thing is awseome. lets put it out there. Mr. dalvin showed his skill in producing a couple tracks, K-ci & jojo are to of the best singers to ever be put on wax, Devante is a genius who probaly doesn't realize how much his sound is missed. With all that being said, Jodeci are legends in the r&b world and need to come back and revive r&b and music period.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS JODECI AT ITS PEAK!!! .......2006-02-28

i am kinda disturbed by people whom seem to feel this is the weakest of the 3 albums they put out. not to take anything away from forever my lady. its classic, but too me this album tops it. jodeci is one of the few artists who actually get better and better with time. most times the first album is an artist's best and they try to live up to that. to me this album is like the evolution of jodeci. this album would blow my mind even if it was an instrumental album. im actually still trying to find instrumental versions of tracks. and thats saying something considering K-Ci is the best male soul voice ever. (well okay sam cooke and those cats are better but since 1980 somethin) anyway my point is if you think the down side of this album is the interludes.. YOU ARE NOT A TRUE FAN OR just dont REALIZE what you're missing. LISTEN!!! real close if you have to.. the beats and harmony that are in the background on those interludes is amazing!! i wish myself that they were actual songs themselves... to put it in perspective, since this album came out there arent any songs that can even compare musically to the music playing in the background of the interludes on this album... if u know rnb soul music u know what i mean.. BOTTOM LINE: JODECI INTERLUDES ARE BETTER THAN 99.9% of rnb that has come out since... so dont be one of those cats thats like "oh its a good album but the interludes are way too numberous, just be happy your gettin that much extra jodeci.. and by the way silly.. they are there for a purpose, its a concept album for those who dont realize it from the title alone.. thanks for listening. sorry if it took an angry tone, i just wish people were a little more open minded about art!!!! in my opinion buy this album its the best rnb record ever made since 1990 and still reigns supreme

    5 out of 5 stars almost 2006 n it's still banging front 2 back.......2005-12-29

man i rebought this album just recently for bringing back sum good ol memory type deal i guess & i enjoy this album back when it first came out but i enjoy it even more now! sounds hella better, especially since the music coming out nowadays i ain't even really feelin as much as them dayz. i've just been listening to this album non- stop everyday now for a good month & i not gonna stop or get sick of it cuz i just love jodeci they just hella dope! man i've also re- bought all they albums, even singles wit the remixes, k ci & jojo albums, singles LOL & very happy they drop that dvd wit they videos loved that to def, shoulda done that long time ago. diary of a mad band & this album is tied for favorite album i can't choose between the two but lately i've been listenin to this album more probably cuz it's newer of the two. even though i love the whole album but on the real i start at track 8 then just let it play. devante is a genius though when it comes to this producing thang. his beats are just sick! my favorite tracks 'get on up', 'let's do it all', 'freek n you' of course, 'time & place' & 'love u 4 life'. u can also hear timbaland & missy elliot on dis album before they are who they ares now LOL but man pick this album up if u like this kind of music wanna get down wit yo lady cuz this is the poop! & just keep it on replay, jodeci at it's best yo! if u ain't got this in yo collection then u missing out on sum bomb chit! str8 up quality music w/o the b.s. all talent quality music yo! fo sho i don't know what else to say but pick it ups however u gots to! HOT CHIT!

    3 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2005-09-30

Boy was I surprised as a high schooler to hear track # 13. Haha! There are too many interludes on here but as far as song quality goes, these are good tunes. If you want a sexual-horn dog CD, buy this one. "Get On Up" and "Love You For Life" are really the only ~non-sexual~ tunes on here.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best rap album ever.......2005-10-21

Sometimes I tend to overexaggerate how great this or that album is, but in this case I am right on the money saying this is the greatest rap album ever cut. I know some people would argue that Snow or MC Lyte are better, but if they said that to me I would probably give them a people's elbow. The depth of this thing blows me away to this day. The song "Good Vibrations" is probably the greatest hip hop track recorded up to this point. Marky Mark raps about being healthy and feelin the vibration. Marky is a philosopher as well as a poet which makes him the hip hop version of Hasslehoff. Let's get one thing straight, if Hasselhoff felt like cutting a rap album, he'd take over that genre as well, but King David doesn't mind sharing the glory. I jog about 5.3 miles every morning and put a few cuts off this platter on my portable 8 track player. When "Wildside" comes on, I just stop and reflect on how incredible I am and the fact that I don't have to deal with problems poor and ugly people do. I usually wake up in the morning, pee, and then enjoy a nice bowl of frosted mini wheats before getting myself ready for another day of being me. Being me takes a lot out of me and people expect a lot. What amazes everyone that come in contact with me is that I don't meet their expections, I roll them up and smoke them like chronic. I'm going to put it this way, I'm the white Dr. Dre and when I talk EF Hutton listens. Think that one through, chachi.
