dark, threatening, controversial...not punk.......2006-05-28
Black & White is the masterpiece of The Stranglers, a band which showcased a very aggressive sound (especially the bass of J.J.Burnel) with Doorsian influences (the keyboards), dark themes and very politically un-correct opinions in their lyrics.
They were contemporaries of the british punk movement of the second half of the 70's, but they were never a part of that scene and were always distinguishable for their use of keyboards and independent thought. I don't think they ever pressed the anti-establishment issue that was so prevalent in the punk scene, although they never refrained from taking an independent stand on controversial topics.
Therefore, I disagree with the label "punk" so often attached to them, included the previous users' reviews on this site. If you want to use a tag, then I think "darkwave" fits best.
The music in this album blends "dark" themes with psychedelia, poppish hooks ("Tank", "Sweden - All quiet on the eastern front") and even up-tempo waltz ("Outside Tokyo"). The drums - as the costume of the time imposed - were played in a quite rigid, cold style; the bass is an ever-threatening presence and along with the keyboards give the Stranglers music its distinctive sound.
After almost 30 years this is still great album to listen to; my impression is that fans of dark metal would also appreciate it.
Virtuoso musicianship... on a punk album!.......2003-08-20
I love this album; I consider it the best punk album ever recorded. Despite my love for this album, I've never checked out any of the other Stranglers albums... perhaps I'm afraid I'd be disappointed when comparing them to this masterpiece. (This strange quirk of mine extends to the "bonus tracks" on the CD; I don't want to hear them for fear they'll turn a perfect album into an imperfect disc.) I can't imagine The Stranglers - or punk music - getting any better than the original "Black and White" album. I don't have a favorite track on this album; they're all gems.
What makes this record unique is its balance between traditional "punk" sounds and attitudes on the one hand and virtuoso musicianship on the other. Punk bands have never been known for talented instrumentalists; oftentimes, it's a person's ATTITUDE that gets him hired by a punk band, not his ability to play an instrument. As a result, most punk bands don't have very talented musicians. That's not the case here... the members of The Stranglers are all exceptional on their chosen instruments; they all have "chops" and play as though music theory matters. Bassist Jean-Jacques Burnel is perhaps the best in the band... his tone and basslines on songs like "Toiler on the Sea" and "Nice n' Sleazy" blow me away.
Punk musicians with chops? Time and tempo changes in punk songs? It hardly seems possible, but it is. Prog Rock meets Punk? Prog Punk? What's next, will the members of Yes join the Clash?
(The only complaint: the CD format robs the buyer of the art on the original album. The LP had a "marbled vinyl look" that was entertaining to stare at as it spun beneath the record needle.)

Life should Always be so Black & White!.......2003-04-06
At first this album was a hard one to really grasp. Rattus & No More Heroes were so much easier, But with a little bit of work Black & White joins The Raven as well as the first two, as great Satisfying works of this Great Band! These guys followed their own direction, and that made this album timeless in an age of timely music. Solid songwriting and musical exploratory usage make for an album to be enjoyed, perhaps, forever. Not just songs where the clouds are interesting! Where is Sweden anyway?
An all time classic.......2002-03-11
Stranglers' fans will usually see one of three albums as the group's best: Rattus Norvegicus, Black and White or the Raven. Each have their merits and each have their own claim to be the high point. On 'Black and White' the group have found their 'sound'. The album holds together extremely well as a whole. There is still the punk energy of the group's debut. There is also some of the superb musicianship of the Raven. What makes this such a classic is the way the instruments feed off each other and complement each other so well. The booming bass lines of Jean-Jacques Burnel are constantly interacting with the unusual guitar style of Hugh Cornwell and the exceptional talents of Dave Greenfield on keyboards. This is what the Doors were aspiring to be but never quite achieved. Contains two superb singles 'Nice n Sleazy' and as a bonus track 'Walk on By'. Paradoxically it was listening to this album that A flock of Seagulls came up with their name- thankfully this group is 100 times better than Mike Score's outfit ever could be. Definitely worth the money.

Does anyone really consider this music?.......2007-07-08
Like the title says, I don't really consider this album to be me music. Every single song is exactly the same: downtuned chugga chugga guitars that are capable of all but a couple sounds. Mat Bruso's guttural and monotonus bark. That's about all there is to it. People say it fits in with the tough-guy hardcore stuff, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. The delivery sounds tough on the surface, but look at the lyrics and you'll swear it's screamo.
The only thing good I can say about BYD is the drummer. Mark Castillo really knows how to keep things innovative and unrepetitive. The way he can use the double bass for rhythm and not just for blasting is amazing. Why he would leave Between the Buried and Me to waste his talent in BYD is beyond me.
Overall, BYD is a joke. That's really the only reason why I listen to them at all. It gives me something to chuckle about: the ridiculousness of the whole "moshcore" scene, wannabe tough-guy image, etc. I bought the cd for three dollars used just because I liked the album artwork.
The new age of mallcore.......2007-01-31
Wannabe tough guy vocals, repetitive guitars, weak drums, and flaccid lyrics deppreciate a rather overrated band. Avoid.
beatdownbeatdownbeatdown.......2007-01-17
if you like breakdowns and very heavy riffs, buy this album. their new cd doesnt really set my pants on fire but Cover Your Tracks is a very solid heavy record. and its cool that all the songs on it are named after tom cruise movies
INSANE.......2006-08-01
Alright, so after seeing Bury Your Dead destroy the second stage at Ozzfest 2004, I had one thought that stuck with me, in my mind, for the rest of the day: "f*cking BUY A BURY YOUR DEAD album as soon as you get home!! And, sure as hell, I did, and while BYD on record doesn't quite match the sheer hardcore insanity of a BYD show, it does make for a brutal listening experience, which will no doubt pump up any hardcore fan...
As a reviewer before me stated, Bury Your Dead is PIT music! Pure and simple; this is as heavy as it gets in modern hardcore. The songs are built around frequent bone crushing breakdowns and two step-parts. BYD doesn't f*ck around with soloes or complex compositions either; just straight forward, take no prisoners HARDCORE, the way it should be!
This release won't impress listeners looking for anything technical, and if you don't like hardcore, you won't like BYD. But if you like hardcore, this record is a MUST!! Second best hardcore release of 2004 (first is Terror's "One With The Underdogs"). Five stars no doubt.

Nora in New York City.......2007-03-21
....I know it was some time ago, and the voice (not quite as experienced) is
always instantly recognizable, but it was Nora Jones !
If you are a Nora Jones Fan you will Love this album. Peter Malick and his group are always outstanding, just add Nora and it becomes Magic !!
Do waste your money.......2007-03-08
I really enjoy Norah Jones. This CD was so bad I still haven't listened to the whole CD. Who wants the listen to the same 5 songs preformed 5 different ways? Most of the remixes are hip hop, not really Norah Jones' style. The best part of this CD is the cover artwork. If I could I would give this CD 0 stars
Once Again???.......2007-02-09
Well, it seems that Peter Malick Group depends on this album to survive. It is the fourth album from the same stuffs. 2003, 2004, 2005, and now, 2007, bringing the same songs! But the electronic versions are not so bad, thanks to Norah Jones' beautifull and sweet voice.
Simple, uplifting vocal harmonies..........2000-02-25
...and a zest for the music they're creating help make this collection of early Ladysmith Black Mambazo worth hearing, even by a new introductee to their sound. The story of Joseph Shabalala's faith is interesting to know and lends weight to the music we're hearing, but even if you haven't heard any of this music in the past, it remains vibrant and beautiful, a worthwhile new addition to any xenophile's CD collection.

Game Untold.......2005-07-30
For some reason the review above says "34 Reasons" and this aint that album...Other than that if you a big Mr.Kee fan or a Bay Area and Texas connect fan then this the album you looking for. It got that Texas to the Bay feel with a Latin twist. Many Latin hard hitters like Mr. Kee, 10sion, Gemini, Baby Bash and Grimm. Even "GoldToes" Julio puts it down! Begining to end no joke!
Raw Rap.......2004-12-09
34 Reasons: Surviving the Game is purely raw. 34 Reasons is a double disk collaboration produced by Goldtones Entertainment. A collaboration of rap artist "from the Golden Gate to the Lone Star State," as phrased on the cd's cover.
Beat-wise, 34 Reasons keeps it clean and simple. 34 Reasons creates a calming vibe to bump to, but it also carries plenty of hype.
Featured in this collaboration is a familiar artist that goes by the name Baby Bash. Baby Bash has two tracks on the second disc, "City of Dank" and "Sideshow." Baby Bash's "City of Dank" creates an image in the mind of what it is to be coming from the streets of California with a thug mentality. It's not negative, but it's not very positive either, it's simply a realistic look at how things are.
A few other artist worth honorable mentions are Andre Nickatina, Cougnut, and Mr. Kee, who is featured on four tracks.
34 Reasons is a loaded book, with 18 tracks on the first disc and 20 on the second. Listening to 34 Reasons definitely fills time. In the name of 'gangster rap' this collaboration meets quality from track to track.

Strength of Praise Music.......2006-12-14
I love this cd. I have purchased this cd for several people. This cd give the strength to people who has forgot to whom we must give thanks. It let you know that you should look back to where you came from and how you got where you are now. I played this cd while I was cooking Thanksgivig dinner and my son said it reminded him of being down the country hearing real church music and that's five stars coming from a teen who only listens to rap. Keep giving us the old the new is ok but, the clean-up, cooking and praise music works.
REAL GOSPEL MUSIC!!.......2004-10-04
I absolutely love this CD!!! It's so refreshing to hear real gospel music for a change. I like cross-over gospel and contemporary gospel music but in the effort to cross over, gospel has become totally watered down. i love the songs on this album because they really minister to you!! donald lawrence is awesome as usual and norman hutchins just continues to quietly crank out the hits BUT my favorite of all is, the alaska mass choir with the phenomenal dorinda clark-cole 'tis so sweet to trust in jesus". after getting gospel tracks 2 and discovering alaska, I ran out and bought their full album - WOW!!! Every song is awesome and Dorinda is singing like a crazy woman. I hope you put out a new record each year because I am certainly telling all my friends about Gospel tracks!!

A popular Chicago band in the 80's, Zoetrope's music (self-described as "street metal") was aggressive 80's metal bordering on thrash. The bands name (pronounced e-trope) was derived from sort of film industry apparatus, as well as the name of Francis Ford Coppola's studio.
