If you need something to pump you up for the upcoming second edition of Sarah McLachlan's all-female touring festival, Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is the ticket. This two-disc compilation features 25 live cuts from the inaugural trip. On first spin, it's hard not to notice the range and sheer power of the vocals here. Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work. The most obvious example of this is the opening "Mississippi," where Paula Cole unleashes a voice larger than life. Predictably present is McLachlan's "Building a Mystery," the definitive Lilith song, which began its assault on the air waves at the start of last year's tour and, well, kept building. The house that Sarah built is still growing strong. Lilith Fair: A Celebration of Women in Music is satisfying proof. --Carla DeSantis

4 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair, Volume One.......2007-07-06

Many of the performers at Lilith Fair received far more attention, but it is hard to believe that any of them, in the course of their entire careers, will come close to equaling the stature or influence of the sublime Emmylou Harris. Pay close attention to her achingly rich and layered performance here of "Going Back to Harlan" and you get a taste of a singer of bottomless depth, intensity and genuine emotion. She is America at its most authentic and noble.

4 out of 5 stars From The Other Side.......2007-02-27

Maybe I'm too much of a male Chauvinist, but I was never very interested in the various Lilith Fairs. However, for some reason I picked up this CD (at the library - OK I'm cheap) and gave it a listen. It's really quite good overall, albeit a bit uneven. I've listened to it for a while now and it wears quite well.

The Editorial Review above says "Many of the artists give performances that eclipse their studio work" and that's certainly true for Joan Osborne. Her "Ladder" is definitely one of the best live performances I've ever heard. She's a great singer and she had a helluva band backing her up that day. (BTW, one of the other great live songs is "Naked Eye" by Luscious Jackson on Lilith vol. 3.)

Other particularly good songs on this CD are: "Sur Tes Pas" - Autour De Lucie; "I Want" - Dayna Manning; "Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" - September 67; "Cain" - Patty Griffin; "I Don't Want To Think About It" - Wild Strawberries. I hadn't heard anything by any of these artists before, so I consider this quite a find.

In sum, a nice double CD with a nice range of unique works. As of this writing, it's available as "new" for $3.34 + s/h! Definitely worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but disappointing overall.......2006-07-29

I bought this after hearing great reports about the Lilith Fair. This CD, however, does not match up with those reports. CD #1 is blah until Susanna Hoff's "Eternal Flame" and Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery". CD #2 is an improvement, beginning with the outstanding "Water is Wide". The rest of CD #2 pales in comparison, though. If you have access to online music source, just download those 3 tracks and forget the rest.

3 out of 5 stars Lilith Fair Live.......2006-03-13

This recording was recommended by a friend and it would be true to say that there are some exceptional duets on the CD that make it worth while. It is a celebration of women in music and because of that there are some bands that I had not heard of before. Whilst it is good to expose people to different bands some of the musicians/songs were not 'my cup of tea' (so I consequently hit the forward button), but you never know they may grow on me. Overall I due enjoy this CD and certainly enjoy the majority of the songs.

3 out of 5 stars ok but.......2004-04-22

this band is ok, but for good music check out Jean Luc-Ponty.

2 out of 5 stars blah.......2007-04-02

I suppose there might be some people who would enjoy this "music"...however I didn't...Your woman is a great song in the same way that folk implosions "natural one" is a good song...
but white town really don't have much else to go on with this album.
I have a feeling that some people might follow this band devoutely but I think for most, that if you feel like buying this you might want to get it for like 2 bucks or something.

4 out of 5 stars Some really great songs!.......2007-02-02

I was reading some of the reviews and it sounds like such a mixed bag. While I agree that a few of the songs are quite forgettable, the ones I love, I really love. Obviously, Your Woman, probably the reason that most even learned about them, but "Wanted" is great. Going nowhere somehow is AWESOME. I just love the chorus of that song and his voice is just so smooth. The Shape of Love and Death of My Desire are very enjoyable as well. While all may not sound like Your Woman, its definitely worth a listen in my opinion. It has a great range and I Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars lovers.......2006-06-09

Thanks to Amazon for letting me listen to "Your Woman". Also, Thanks to those of you who wrote reviews so I could guess which song my 3 and 6 year old sons ask for every time I turn on the radio. They call the little trumpet call STAR WARS, and it makes me laugh. I recently purchased Gorillaz 2005 CD which has "Feel Good", which the boys call the laughing song. I found out the band doesn't even exist. I ALWAYS buy a CD for one song, except for best of collections. Thank you all for helping me rock out in commuterville with my demanding music lovers.

    Amazon.com essential recording

A vast audience received its first exposure to the music of György Ligeti through Stanley Kubrick's use of his haunting "Lux Aeterna" (despite the composer's lack of consent) in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This collection--part of Sony's invaluable Ligeti edition--places "Lux aeterna" in the context of Ligeti's other a cappella choral works, which together provide an overview of the evolving phases of one of the 20th century's most intriguing composers. In his booklet notes to the disc, Ligeti recalls the influence of Bartók and Kodály on his early folkloric compositions, from arrangements of traditional material to free, polyrhythmically inflected inventions on Hungarian folk texts, a format that allowed him some degree of experimental freedom from the strictures of "socialist realism" before he fled the Hungarian Communist regime. The breakthrough "Lux aeterna" is a classic example of Ligeti's trademark technique of "micropolyphony," enveloping the listener in mesmerizingly dense textures of cloudlike harmonies. From Ligeti's late period comes a triptych of "Hölderlin Phantasies." Their 16-voice polyphony transcends the simplistic distinction between tonality and atonality to explore "new kinds of half diatonic, half chromatic harmonies." The resulting sound world of fragmentary, dislocated epiphanies mirrors the unfathomable richness of the great visionary poet to uncanny effect. Throughout, the acoustical balance and conviction of the London Sinfonietta Voices give vivid shape to Ligeti's genius. -Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Surprising Variety in Modern A Capepella Choral works.......2006-08-24

This 'A Cappella Choral Works', the second volume in a collection of Gyorgy Ligeti compositions contains one of the pieces of music which contributed to making '2001, A Space Odyessy' such a profoundly interesting film. This piece, 'Lux aeterna' which is the textbook example of 'SciFi' music, is very different from many of the other pieces on this recording. In fact, one is really impressed by the wide variety of styles, where you have some peasant songs which sound a lot like sea chantys and other pieces which are definitely liturgical. One can certainly thank Stanley Kubrick for bringing Ligeti to our attention.

    2 out of 5 stars Mostly unlistenable...........2006-08-23

Not even good for background music/noise as the voices get really loud in certain parts and almost silent.

I bought this CD and am returning it. It's just more & more of the sameness throughout the whole CD.

I realize that Ligeti is avant garde but I heard that if you like Gregorian chant (which I do) this CD is similar. I don't think it is. It's very disquieting and full of tension (great, if that's the mood you're looking for).

5 out of 5 stars a handful of great Ligeti works........2004-09-06

As a compilation, musically speaking, Edition 2 is probably my least favorite of the Sony Ligeti Edition collection. Many of the pieces come from traditional Hungarian sources, conceived while Ligeti was still in his early years. They are pretty, but also pretty straightforward and conventional, and other than their simple pleasantness and occasionally yummy dissonances, they aren't really mindblowing like the best Ligeti. They are often very beautiful though. However, Edition 2 DOES feature one of the most harrowing, apocalyptic compositions of 20th century Western music, _Lux aeterna_. The profound tension in the quiet web of micropolyphonic voices is just devastating. Also great are the other later pieces, _Drei Phantasien nach Friedrich Holderlin_, three wild polyphony pieces from German literature, and _Magyar Etudok_, three very complex Hungarian etudes for 16 voices. Those pieces are all outstanding but honestly I think everything I've heard by Ligeti is worth hearing. Check out Ligeti edition 4 for more vocal works, some of which are the best of Ligeti's works.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant choral music.......2003-07-21

This cd is beautiful to listen to.From Ejszaka to Kallai Ketto
is brilliant. Ligeti choral works is the first cd have got choral music on it and i love it.Now im going to get the other two cds in the ligeti edition.
(the vocal works & le grand marabre)

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite use of the voice.......2002-07-11

Bringing Ligeti's works to a wider public was one of the great services Stanley Kubrick performed for the world when Lux aeterna was included in the soundtrack for 2001: a Space Odyssey.

This album is a collection of a cappella choral works and which highlights Ligeti's great talent and skill in the use of the voice as a musical instrument. He, together with Yoko Ono, have excelled in this field though from different, sometimes conflicting directions.

When I listen to this I revel in it's glory. The sounds are ethereal and atmospheric, ghostly and angelic in a way that no-one but the composer can make them sound. I never want those sounds to end and in a way it is like having a sort of dependence.

I could go on and on and on about this but I had better stop. This is one essentila component of anyone's classical music collection yet it really defies categorisation. This is timeless, awesome music, not just for a generation but for a world. Lest Zeus strike me with a thunderbolt, these voices are sweeter and more angelic than the voices of the angels themselves.

Exquiiste. Words are insufficient to describe such beauty.

5 out of 5 stars The Women Gather Sweet Honey in the Rock.......2005-08-29

I'm a new fan of Sweet Honey in the Rock, so wasn't sure what to expect from the cd, having only seen them on public tv. Their music is brilliant, unique, all a capella; not easy listening, however. Very political.

5 out of 5 stars As Always, the best.......2003-02-01

Sweet Honey delivers message of love, struggle and social resonsibility through their rich, stirring a capella vocals, and celebrate 30 years together with this new CD. This one presents a wide range of styles and vocalizations of mostly contemporary songs written by the group, or new arrangements of old songs, such as Isaac Watts' "That Awful Day Will Surely Come." They address everything from addition to voter rights (or lack thereof) in the District of Columbia. A lush and thought-provoking CD as only Sweet Honey can create.

I've been a fan of these phenomenal women for some time now and I was thrilled to see they released a 30th anniversary album. The CD is an inspiring and uplifting experience from start to finish and I cannot get enough of it. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE, no matter your age or musical tastes. What a treat!

"Boom In The Night" is the first and only Bush Tetras CD ever released from this historic, now kicking-ass band, that was one of Stiff UK Recordings' first signings in the early '80s. It includes all the crucial recordings made from 1980 to 1983. Fifteen songs, including unreleased demos, all digitally re-mastered.

Here we have their original studio recordings, 1980-83, remastered by band member/drummer Dee Pop. It includes all their Clash period production work by Topper Headon and Joe Blaney.

'Boom in the Night' is an alt. classic. If you like Gang of Four and The Slits you'll enjoy this. If you don't know what I'm talking about start clicking your keys - it's about time you did. Let's face it what you hear as 'new' today came from yesteryear.

    4 out of 5 stars Very good!.......2006-09-27

Now this is really seminal post-punk new wave. It sounds like a lot of stuff you have heard by now but back then it was completely new and fresh. It still surprises me how innovative most of these new york new wave bands were.

4 out of 5 stars A Real new York Legend BUSH TETRAS RULE!!!!!!.......2006-01-24

I could not believe the whippersnapper above comparing the bush tetras with Bikini kill. Ha!! Bikini kill * W I S H E S * they were in the same league as the Bush Tetras ((by the way, the reuninted band will play a gig on feb 24 here in NYC).
I Am old enough to remember them playing live in 1981 So cool so real so perfect in their time. Myself and half of the other straight guys were in love with the butch dykes that ruled downtown with everything one could hope to have= real style, Intelligence, wry humor, poetry, good music and defiant politics. They did not become big because of their in-your-face lesbian sensuality. I remember when "Too many creeps" came out, everyone was like "hey who are these women, and what are they saying?". Sadly, heroin took its toll and members went downhill and destroyed a great band...
Do yourself a favor. buy this record. This is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Nobody like them, funky sorta pre BIKINI KILL, less hardcore.......2006-01-14

Man, I've loved this group since I first heard them in the mid 80's. Lots of funky fun. 'Too Many Creeps' woulda been a radio hit in a perfect world. The lyrics are perfect for feminist/great band thinking. They have several other songs that you gotta listen to on 'listen': 'Cowbyos in Africa' gives me a real feeling that this is a band of white youth with a good groove on. It's their own. 'You Can't Be Funky' again gets it right. 'Snakes Crawl' moves just right. 'You Taste Like the Tropics'. Nice sentiment. All four songs stand the test of time very well. Well written, urban punk funk, heavy on the urban funk.

Again, New York does its thing. I didn't know the CLASH drummer, Topper, was associated with some of the recordings. I think he's one of the best drummers ever, very diverse skills and just so right on all the CLASH songs he's on. Really provides a foundation for them to build on. Percussion is one of this band's strengths.

Three gals and a guy. Same gender formula for BIKINI KILL, sorta the next generation building from BUSH TETRAS. There's a natural connection there. chrisbct@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Diverse, alternately maddening and surprising (3.5 stars).......2004-02-23

Recommended to me as a result of liking "Too Many Creeps" on a compilation of my brother's and loving ESG's "A South Bronx Story", a I had to wait a long time to receive "Boom In The Night".

To say the least, the record is not really that closely related to the post-funk innocence of "A South Bronx Story". Whilst the rhythms of many songs are similar, the mood is exactly the opposite. Here, the image is of women fighting for their rights against the intrusion of the patriarchal system, seen most clearly on the anthemic "Stand Up And Fight" on which Cynthia Sley's half soul sister/half pure punk vocals did possess a true authority that overcomes the somewhat preachy tone.

"Snakes Crawl" and "Dum Dum" perfectly capture the paranoia inherent in the Tetras' worldview with simple, hard rhythms that convey a genuine message of warning to powers-that-be. "Things That Go Boom", "Who's Gonna Pay" and "It's So Weird" possessed a great deal of the darkness and slow-burn sensuality of 1990s psychedelia despite the overblown guitar sound that has not aged very well. Nonetheless, there was a good deal of overblown pomposity on the Tetras' work (taking away some of the power from "Dum Dum"), and "Cowboys In Africa" was meaningless and noisy - how I hate music.

"Das Ah Riot" was a song of creepy brilliance: Sley taking on a softer tone made the funky rhythms much more touching and powerful, and "Moonlite" approached true beauty, showing these women to be more than aggressive, mindless punks. "You Can't Be Funky" put a characterristic slant on romantic relationships, even if it sounds a wee bit dated, and the instrumental "Funky" was a brilliant finalé, showing the Tetras' talents in a much purer light.

This albums diversity could be maddening and annoying at first listen, but there will be something for most listeners on here. Basically a 3.5 star album, but those who like loud, simple music might love parts of this I find too noisy.

ringtone88.com an ode to a old flame for whom things didn't turn out so well, done as only the Kid can with a mix of sadness, distain and attitude.

At the time this was released, I walked around wondering why Prince was so big while Kid Creole struggled to get the recognition he so richly deserved. Listening to this, I still wonder why.

4 out of 5 stars Underated and overlooked.......2003-04-20

Truly and example of how varied and polished a band can get. While "sideways" did leave fans a little underfed, "Men & Women..." is a full course.

MWH has consistantly been a good pop band in the very truest sense of the word. This CD showcases lively songs, worldly thoughts, and insightful messages. Ivans voice is well rounded and is showcased in the prominent fashion it should be.

My only word of caution is this: If you are getting this just for the Safety Dance remix - don't. It's an instrumental that leaves much to be desired. And is in all honesty, the sore spot on a rather lovely collection of music.

Also... Ivan released a solo CD, that is simply put 'Proper pop' it's called "the spell". Check it out. It picks up where MWH's leaves off.. and then goes off on it's own path.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly horrible album by a once great band..........2002-11-24

Men Without Hats WERE a good band and are one of my favorite bands today, but this was just a really bad album. Up until this point they churned out nothing but gold, but this, along with the almost-as-bad Sideways, were just god awful. MWH is an electropop band... this "album" has nothing resembling that... The single Hey Men was a really bad choice in the sense that it's their worst song of all time... next to 21st Century Safety Dance (which isn't really a song, but 5 minutes of fake techno and children laughing... pointless? YUP!)... It's pretty bad when their ABBA cover is one of the higher points, since most everything else is completely forgetable! Even hardcore MWH fans hate songs like Underneath The Rainbow and Eloise and I (and it's "intro" which is yet another low point on the album). I really wish i could give TAOWAMWHITTC zero stars... 'cause that's what it deserves... CHA!

4 out of 5 stars Vote with your money.......2002-01-08

That pithy statement is one of my favorite MWH-isms, and it reflects the extra little bit of grittiness that creeps into some of the music on this record, the follow-up to "Pop Goes the World". But despite that and the extensive presence of guitars, this is still definitely a MWH album. Even more earnest than "Pop", if that's possible, the sound here is roughly halfway between that record and the subsequent "Sideways". It's a more reserved album than their others, but the first two songs are worth the price of admission alone. The lead track, "In the 21st Century", still gives me goosebumps.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated... These are Really Good Musicians!.......2000-06-08

There is no better or worse when it comes to Men Without Hats. Every album offers the same dose of ballads and barnstormers. It's unfortunate that their only song known by most people is the over hyped "Safety Dance". These men do some seriously musical stuff if you can listen beyond the "slightly gruff at first" lead singing.
"You & Me" is absolutely pretty. Sweeping strings and lovely piano dominate in all the right places. The lyrics (sample: "Then I saw your face, and thought how life's so good to me; we were meant to meet each other in the middle of a mystery; We were meant to be together, You & Me") may not be pure poetry, but they are charming, and will have you singing along with the chorus on your first listen.
"Everybody's Selling Something" is one such barnstormer. This song really gets you moving! The Hats have come to be known for intelligent and quirky lyrics, and this song really shows off their talent for clever wordplay as well as their knack for perfect stadium pop/rock. This is one of the best of that type they have ever done.
I got through almost the entire song "S.O.S." before realizing where I had heard it before. They have turned a sucrose dripping ABBA song into a proud symphonic/rock tour de force. You just have to hear this! Lot's of fun is heard on "Eloise & I". Long before Tori Amos hammered the harpsichord in her anthems, the Hats were using it just like any other band instrument. In this song they use it for pounding rhythms as well as subtle twinkling. I'm sitting here bouncing all over my chair just humming it to myself. You will hum and bounce too!
These are just a few examples of why you should listen further to this group. There's lots more good stuff here, and on their other earlier collections. Don't let "Safety Dance" make you miss out on all the other things they offer. The Hats are realy fun to put on.

To be honest, I wouldn't have gotten this CD if it wasn't for 'Angel' and 'I Do,' the only songs on here that I have heard. I was introduced to some more Natalie Merchant, which was nice. This version of 'Angel' is wonderful. I love the extra piano parts. Personally, I think Sarah doesn't need anyone to sing with her, and (don't jump on me for saying this) I think it would have been better without Emmylou. But it is great. 'I Do' is even better live. The only other song on here that I really liked was 'In the Ghetto,' but I do want to get the other Lilith Fair CDs just so I can hear some other Sarah McLachlan songs live. Okay, sorry for rambling: the bottom line is that most of the songs on here are not very much like Sarah McLachlan, so if you are, like me, a Sarah fan that just wanted to check out some other female singers in that genre... I wouldn't recommend Lilith Fair Vol. 2.
