Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Like Robin Hood working on a tip from Chuck D, D'Angelo has stolen back the soul that was missing from the just-add-water R&B scene. Voodoo is a simmering cauldron of sound, a magical collection. Stained with sweat, longing, and rage, this is an album with trouble on the brain. But it also includes sacred sweet nothings and rapturous raw rhythms to get you through the night. --Lizz Mendez Berry
Amazon.com
Halfway through the languid midtempo ballad "Send It On" from D'Angelo's new sophomore effort, Voodoo, the young retro-soul maestro and band shift tempo and melody. It's a move so understatedly dramatic that it elicits comparisons not just to obvious touchstones Marvin Gaye and Al Green, but to the Jimi Hendrix of Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. While Voodoo is hardly in a league with such major statements, it's a record inviting enough to attract repeated plays of its 78-minute length. As on his 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, D'Angelo covers a wide range of concerns--sex, home cooking, the destructive side of current street life--in a deceptively offhand manner. But he's a crafty craftsman: even a throwaway workout like "Chicken Grease" is blessed not only with a slinky groove and a guitar lick that deserves to be called just that, but bursts of Gaye-style vocal harmonies; the whole track, for all its retro flavor, ends up sounding like nothing else around. Throw in the blasts of anger that fire "Devil's Pie," the restatement of Bono's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" in "Greatdayindamornin'," and the complete takeover of Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Makin' Love," and Voodoo proves one jam that was well worth the nearly five-year wait. --Rickey Wright

Monotone .......2007-08-04
This CD is by no means horrible but it's by no means great either. Though I do love the song Devil's Pie, I must say that this album failed to hold my interest. Outside of that track, his lyrics are almost impossible to make out and the songs all begin to sound the same. The melody's are your typical neo-soul sharp notes and the beats are really predictable. Normally, I LOVE slow songs but they have to have an intersting/pretty melody to them.
I suggest you listen to the samples before purchasing. I hope this album grows on me.
D'Angelo-Voodoo.......2007-06-07
Timeless! That is the perfect way to describe this album is timeless. It never gets old. Voodoo is one of those albums that you can listen to it over and over and you will hear something you did not here the first time. For the most part he stays on the same type of style Brown Sugar had, just a little more modern to fit with the time. And speeking of time he made his fans wait long enough for this masterpiece coming just shy of five years in between Voodoo and his debut. And now he is going on eight years for his follow up to Voodoo and there is still very little mateiral coming to light for the set entitled James River which is suppose to be due out in late 07 early 08. The anticipation is killing me as well as thousands of other i am sure. But with Voodoo being the masterpiece it is, i will say it just pushes Brown Sugar out of the way as far as which one is better. I mean you still have that mellow laid back style, but with a few more "Groove" tracks. Like the mid tempo banger "Left & Right" which is one of the many highlight on this album. Another being the super soulful "The Line" which is possibly the best song only behind "The Root". The great thing about "The Root" is the guitar in the background just sounds so mellow, and his vocals are so quiet that you would swear he was whispering. Beware though, dont listen to this album in the dark, because this album has smokiness to it that is almost eeiry in a good way, but it can play tricks on you if listen in the dark. But he still is unmatched for his vocals, and yet again if you are thinking about buying this, keep in mind D is far from the poppy radio R&B, because you wont get any of that here. But this is definetly one of the best albums of all time, and i cant wait for James River, definetly buy Voodoo.

excellent.......2007-05-05
i don't listen to a lot of r&b. i really have no idea who are the hot or popular artists singing r&b currently and i don't care that much. that being said, this cd is my favorite of all time. i bought it the first day it came out in 2000 and haven't stopped listening to it since then. it's that good.
it's definitely r&b but has a deeper affinity with soul. there are also jazz and blues elements. and this may sound trite but it is far different than anything else out there. there are a few other neosoul artists that i like -- erykah badu and raphael saadiq in particular -- but none of them are nearly as talented or innovative as d'angelo.
this cd is a lot different than brown sugar with its smooth and jazzy polish. voodoo is funky and raw. this cd showcases some of the most innovative black musicians out there today -- roy hargrove provides horns on several tracks with ?uestlove on the drumset. and all that talent gelled really well.
it's been over 7 years since voodoo came out and i really hope that d'angelo can get himself together enough to put out another album.
Four Years After the Fact, I Finally Get It!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-03
I hate to admit it but when "Voodoo" was first released, I was straight up pissed. I thought it was ok, but it wasn't want I wanted to hear. I think many of us have that problem. (If it's not what WE want it to sound like, then it's not good, or they're slippin'.)
But let's be real. (This goes out to the negative reviewers.) I have to be honest, I was looking for another "Brown Sugar Volume 2", PERIOD. That was my mistake. So I put it away for about four years. I was talking to one of my boys about that project and how I thought it was just okay. He told me to pull it back out. DAMN!!!!!! This project is so hot.......... Now I appreciate this music for what it is. (Innovative, original, funky, soulful and creative.)
But what's really stupid is that if he stuck to the same formula that was successful, these same folk that are complaining now would criticize him for repeating himself and not doing anything new. Isn't this why we listen to artist like D'angelo, Badu and Jill Scott, because they're different? So I got to apologize to D for not gettin' it at first.
I dare anyone to pull this cd back out. It's hotter than anything out there right now.
smooth sounds.......2007-03-14
he started this whole"neo-soul"thing that alicia keys is getting paid off
of.anybody into john legend should pick up this and his first album "brown sugar".the only negative is his enunciation while singing.without the insert of the cd,you would never understand what the hell he is saying!it's actually more 3 1/2 stars than 4 but way better than any of this psuedo rb garbage that is out presently.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki

Great type of Jazz........2006-08-17
Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.
A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26
This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.
Fun, soulful, carefree...like the spirit of New Orleans.......2006-07-04
I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!
I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.
Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.
Highly recommended!
This is the Best!.......2005-01-20
I own three of BBVD's CDs and this one is the best. You just have to move those feet! I just love these guys.
Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14
I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!

Mediocre Best of Release.......2006-11-26
Now, if you are a huge Jimi fan - and I am - please read the review before clicking the "not helpful" button.
First of all, the digipak packaging for this release is by far the worst I have seen. The manufacturer's plastic pegs wear down (they don't break) and eventually the discs won't stay on the spindles. The plastic just "feels" really really cheap - like it was vacu-formed. The booklet is glued into the packaging so even if you want to change the CD box, you can't. Experience Hendrix should have looked at the digipaks that Impulse used for their John Coltrane remasters or those used by ABKO for the Rolling Stones remastes. I cannot stress enough just how lousy this packaging is, perhaps the worst I've seen in all my years collecting CDs. Even the paper in the booklet feels flimsy. It's clear that they put this package together on the cheap like a KTEL or Ronco release.
Disc one has a good selection though if this is truly a best of collection aimed at a new generation of buyers, I don't know why the track selection includes alternate takes rather than the masters of some of Hendrix's better works like All Along the Watchtower and Spanish Castle Magic. Now, that said, I find them interesting but there is a reason they are alternate takes. Jimi was a perfectionist in the studio and these alternate takes don't represent his best work. So again, for that new generation of buyers that this package claims to be aimed at, this seems wrong headed to me.
Disc two has a great selection of Jimi live; however, I can't for the life of me understand why they are not presented in chronological sequence the way the studio stuff is. My only guess is that when you hear the stuff from late spring and summer of 1970 it is very clear that Jimi was tired of the rock star thing. His singing is really pretty terrible in these later tunes. His playing, though pretty wild is also very noisy and sloppy. Maybe it's out of sequence in order to diminish the impact of these sub-par (with respect to Jimi's other live work) performances? I used to have an Lp when I was a young man called 'In the West" that seemed a far better representation of Jimi's live work. Actually, the photo on the cover for this set looks very similar and might even be the same photo from "In the West" To be quite honest, I have not found another Hendrix live release that is anywhere close to as satisfying as "Band of Gypsys", one of the great live recordings of that era.
If you are interested in Jimi, what you really want to do is buy the remastered CDs in this order:
1. Are You Experienced
2. Axis Bold as Love
3. Electric Ladyland
4. Band of Gypsys (always bugs me that the plural of Gypsy is spelled incorrectly on this release!)
5. First Rays of the New Rising Sun
6. Live at Fillmore East with the Band of Gypsys (outtakes from BOG)
7. South Saturn Delta.
8. Live at the BBC
Then move on to some of the other stuff like Jimi Plays Berkley and Live at the Fillmore.
Personally, I believe this 2 disc set is a dis-service to this remarkably gifted artist's legacy but I've been listening to Jimi since 1969 so maybe I'm just not getting the marketing angle.
A Breathtaking Collection From A Rock Legend.......2006-07-19
Jimi Hendrix.
What is left to say about this man? He's only widely considered to be the most creative and influential guitarists in rock and roll. His songs are among the most powerful songs in music, and every guitar player who came both before and after him still looks up to him in awe.
"Voodoo Child: The Jimi Hendrix Collection" is a two disc cd compiled by Rhino as well as Experience Hendrix, a production company run by Jimi's surving relatives that controls his entire recorded output.
The first disc of this collection contaisn all of Hendrix's most popular studio tracks (some in alternate versions), including the timeless "Purple Haze", the brooding "Hey Joe", the solemn "The Wind Cries Mary", the sweltering "Fire", his blazing cover of "All Along The Watchtower" and the passionate, ethereal "Angel". The sound quality is absolutely fantastic. This is Jimi the way he is meant to be heard.
The second disc is a 12 track collection of live performances. Though only a few songs are (or were back in 2001) previously unavailable, this disc gives perfect insight into the electrifying vibe present at a Hendrix concert. This disc includes his classic performance of The National Anthem at Woodstock. Once again, the sound quality is terrific.
The packaging is beautiful and includes insightful liner notes by Kurt Loder.
If you are just starting to experience the genius of Hendrix, this disc is the perfect palce to start your collection.
Are you experienced...?
Room to improve.......2005-12-13
This is a new type of greatest hits collection: it comes with all the hits to attract newbies to Hendrix, but unfortunately, it also includes unreleased material that Hendrix fans need. Unforunately, because the unreleased stuff could have fit in one CD, instead, we need to get yet another studio version of Purple Haze, Little Wing, etc., to get to the stuff we Hendrix fans are interested an pay for a double CD. The liner notes suck, why does Experience Hendrix has to pay people to tell the same Hendrix bio over and over again? Some of the highligts for Hendrix fans are the alternate versions of Stepping Stone and Izabella, and the live Fire, Foxey lady and Red House. A very strong compilation for anyone with interest in finding out whats the big deal about Hendrix, if this doesnt get you into Hendrix, nothing will.
sweet.......2005-09-27
to understand hendrix, you have to try to understand his fire, the inner turmoil, dissatisfaction with the heartskips life gives..and THAT can only be found in his blues.
the live "red house" on this record i have via alan douglas' "the jimi hendrix concerts." very special song it is, but sad when one realizes he really felt that stuff. althesame, don't try to be cool, be youl. and laugh.
The best compilation for the Hendrix freak.......2004-08-18
If you're reading this, no doubt you are looking for the best Hendrix album, whether to start out or "complete" your collection. I have seen several attempts to distill Jimi's musical legacy with varying degrees of success. This is the ONE, folks. Often with these compilations, something is ignored. Not this time. Hendrix's live work is featured quite well; The Star Spangled Banner was only the tip of the iceberg.
The studio disc has the usual standards (of course). A real treat, though, was the last tracks. I am very picky about my Hendrix records, and I don't want to get the same thing over again. But finding "hey baby/land of the rising sun", was interesting- very interesting. As I had not known it even existed in such a complete form, I had to get it.And the alternate takes of "spanish castle magic" and "all along the watchtower" didn't hurt either.
To sum up: new Hendrix fan: this is a good start. Old Hendrix fan: if you don't have this, what's taking you so long?
Now, if they could re-release the movie "Jimi Hendrix"...

This is even better than her first album, 'How to Steal the World'. Pure aural pleasure. If you like Bjork, Keli Ali or Portishead then place a chance on this!
so glad that I took a chance on this.......2005-12-30
I found this at a Tower records listening station and was hooked. Her voice is incredible. It's earthy and warm but has a smoothness that is great for listening to while you lounge around.
so glad that I took the chance.......2005-11-08
I completely agree with the first reviewer. This has an older, sophisticated sound, but still manages to sound modern and fresh.
I took a chance on this when I came across it at my local Barnes & Noble under the "new and notable" section. Is this ever notable. Jackie Joyces' voice is a thing of beauty, not entirely unlike Macy Gray's voice, who I am a big fan of, but with a more mature and polished sound (clearer and less drug-hazed sounding - sorry Macy).
I absolutely love the song "Angel City" as well. As soon as I sampled that song, I knew the CD was for me. Other standouts for me include "Jakarta Flatline", "Rivermouth", and "This Far Out". A few I liked less than others, but it was a great all around listening experience and I have gone back to this CD more than a few times.
I would highly recommend giving this a listen. You won't be disappointed.
Mix Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt and late-night grooves..........2005-08-30
... and you'll get Helicopter Girl's latest release. I just got this album last night and fell in love with the title track "Angel City" on the first listen... Jackie Joyce (aka Helicopter Girl) has a unique voice reminiscent of older singers like Eartha Kitt and Billie Holiday. There is an interesting blend of musical styles here. It's sexy, after-hours music that has both interesting lyrics and an interesting blend of musical styles and instrumentation. I can't say that I love every cut, but it's nice to hear something different and unique, a bit avant-garde, yet classy without being down-right unlistenable. Take a chance and give Helicopter Girl a whirl-- I think (and hope) you'll be glad (as I was) that you did!

Customer Reviews:
Great funk compliation!!.......2003-03-01
This album is great for your collection if you want a good cross section of New Orleans funk. Tracks from the Meters, Eddie Bo, Allen Toussaintm, and the Betty Harris cover of "Ride your Pony" are dynamite. If you are thinking "well why a funk compliation from New Orleans?" the answer is this is where it all started! You can listen to these songs and see where rap, hip hop, and more mainstream funk got its direction. Plus New Orleans has a sound, feel, and energy that can only be found there, and it comes through on these cuts. I guarantee this one will make your feet move! Perfect for a dance party.

Ear Candy ( Really).......2007-03-24
This is by far then(when it came out on lp) and still (remastered cd) , one of the Greatest albums to ever be released .Buy it , play it at your next party, and you'll see what I mean. I'll bet someone will say, who is this playing is great. Its a fun one.Its what made me a life-time fan.The typical American comment is ,Oh the guy from Mike and the Mechanics.Never given the credit he deserves. Its no wonder he doesn't cross the pond much. Satisfy My Soul is the second best( I would call this cd EAR SEX)especially If you have someone to be thankful for in this life .The only think I would not recommend are all those greatest hits he releases. Why? But the whole thing except Groovin,I do not like when folks do whole albums of other folks songs. Its not a good sign(Barry Manilow , Rod Stewart , Raul Malo, yea you.It just seems thier running out of rope. Andrew Wojcik . Hockessin , Delaware
outstanding.......2007-03-11
If you liked One Good Reason, or any of the other stuff you've heard PC do, then you will probably like this album. There are no samples here, which makes it a leap of faith for the listener. Well, I took that plunge, and it was a soft landing. The best way I can describe SV is that it is kind of like Reason in that the brilliance of PC's vocals are 100% here, but SV is a lot more blusier and guitar oriented than Reason. Reason was more into the keyboards and electronic sound. SV actually sounds like a rock band is playing instrurments, and maybe even live. Also SV is a lot more roots-ier, but at the same time, just as hook-laden and catchy as Reason. Any fan of blue-eyed soul should find this album a must. I'm shocked that it never got any airplay, at least in the US. I could go into more detail about the songs, but since you can't get the samples, there's no point. By the way, this album isn't on iTunes, so don't bother looking there. Maybe you will find it somewhere else on the net, but you can't beat the price here. Good luck. Highly recommended.
A blue-eyed soul masterpiece!.......2007-02-06
I can't believe that I'm the first one to review this album. I recently bought this CD after owning the LP since the early 80's. This Nick Lowe produced disc has always been one of my favorites. I just assumed many power-pop fans from the 80's felt the same way and that there would be a ton of reviews here.
Let me be the first to say, don't hesitate to buy this disc! You won't be sorry!

Will VOODOO bring Amber back from the dead?.......2005-11-13
This Song is really not that good and the remixes really dont cut it. Someone needs to perform a voodoo spell to bring Amber's career back from the dead. True, this song is not as horrible as the last release. Amber will have to try harder than this if she wants to have another hit single.
The hot single of the summer.......2005-07-01
1. Amber is a fantastic song writer (dance or otherwise)
2. Vocals are perfect for this song - she's spot on with her style!
3. The music and mixes are top-quality
4. The second release is better than the first - the clubs are going to love this song.
5. As an independant artist, she still has her finger on the pulse of the dance culture of today - which is getting harder to do - but Miss Amber does it well.
The original mix is fab, the otheer mixes are superb, but the UGLY DOLL remix is SMOKING HOT!
This CD is well worth the minimal purchase price [...]
A 'dance' artist with an edge..........2005-06-23
Who woulda thought a 'dance' artist could have soul and depth? Amber is indeed a rare find. She started her career with the club banger 'This is your night' and has evolved into an artist with depth, soul and a serious edge. The beats are great, but that's just the surface. The original version of VOODOO is awesome, but the mixes are even better. The most pleasant surprise here is the Sweetrains remix, which is a tornado of hard beats and frantic rhythms. By the end of the cd, the Ugly Doll Mix and the Zen Club Mix offer a welcome change of pace from the rough-edged earlier reworkings. The Ugly Doll Mix is poppy, while the Zen Club Mix is soothing, trance track. Overall, a great and worthwhile buy.
It's all about the Ugly Doll Mix!.......2005-06-22
Of all the remixes of the second single from Amber's latest album, the Ugly Doll Club Mix is the one that really pumps you up with its bouncy and throbbing electro beat. Who needs coffee or Red Bull when you got this? My only complaint is that this mix ought to be the first track kicking off this CD single (it's track 7 here). But it's not meant to insult the other remixes...the Kriya vs Velez remix is a nice tribal take of the song, and the Mike Cruz Vox Mix goes over similar territory but adds some extra circuit touches as well. Anyhow, here's to Amber and producer/remixer Wolfram Dettki for a job well done on that Ugly Doll remix!
Beautiful, unexplainable Voodoo.......2005-06-21
This is one of the best songs off of Amber's new full-length CD "My Kind of World." If you've loved Amber's past hits, you're going to love this one too. It's sexy and mysterious, with great lyrics and an infectious beat. Listen once, you'll be intrigued. Listen twice, you're hooked. The single contains the original album version, as well as seven more (yes, seven!) amazing mixes that bring this song to the dance floor, yet remain true to the feel and vibe of the original. The Kriya vs. Velez mix, which is getting a ton of satellite and internet radio play, is a tight dance track. The Ugly Doll and Sweetrains mixes are amazing as well, and the Zen Club mix gives the track a whole new spin. Pick this one up now -- it's headed to #1!

Trance Jazz.......2007-02-10
This must is my 3rd or 4th purchase! I've either had to attempt to borrow it back or it's been stolen! A must have. This one will not get away from me!
And If you like this you will also enjoy "Skin" Ephraim Lewis.
Worn out the original.......2005-08-21
I'm just about to replace this as I've damaged my original.
One of my favourite records. First heard this back in the early 90's and I still play it. Timeless piece of music with gorgeous vocals.I' would be proud to write this.
Where are they?
MELLOW MUSIC.......2000-11-22
This is actually one of the first recordings I purchased on Compact Disc. The songs are definitely for the times you are chilling at home alone or with your mate. The songs Yo Yo, Inside This Love, Don't Change Your Love, and Circle On You are my favorites.
this cd combines lush strings, heavy bass and a great voice.......1999-11-18
all i can say is that this one of those must have cd's. with songs like circle on you and voodoo soul, you can't go wrong.
Soft lust.......1999-08-22
This is the kind of CD you can put on when the two of you are sharing a quiet evening reading at opposite ends of the couch... and you'd rather you weren't reading, or at opposite ends! Potent.

Forgotten But Not Forgettable.......2005-12-07
It doesn't surprise me that this album is out of print. When it first came out, despite rave reviews across the board, it went nowhere. That's really a shame as it was one of the best albums of 1982 and deserved more attention.
Paul was languishing in Squeeze and, I guess, felt he could do better so he hooked up with Nick Lowe and they ended up producing a real gem. As the previous reviewer states, if you like Nick Lowe or Rockpile this is something you'll love. In fact, the first six songs (originally side one) are uniformly excellent, not a bad one in the bunch.
Lowe and Carrack had planned to take turns playing / producing albums as Lowe had previously done with Dave Edmunds, though Carrack played on many future Lowe albums this back and forth did not come to pass. Which is another shame, the eighties could have used more albums like Sububan Voodoo, forgotten or not.
accessible pop.......2004-02-20
Carrack, a journeyman of the rock and roll sorts, finds a temporary niche with producer Nick Lowe at the helm.
Suburban Voodoo is a forgettable album in the sense no one needs to own it, but for those who want a pure piece of 80's pop without replaying the same overheard radio tunes, or hits if you will, with a very recognizable voice coming through the speakers, this album is for you.
Fun, pop, British and hit-ready, Carrack leads his band through tunes that are jumpy, catchy, lyrically intact, and well, just plain fun.
Like Lowe? Rockpile? Brinsley Schwartz? Carrack's Suburban Voodoo will cast its spell on you.
