Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were attempting mini-radio plays in the writing and production work with the Coasters that provided all concerned with a string of hits that ran from 1955 into the early '60s. They added a few things to their memories of chestnuts like The Shadow Knows, however: the new R&B's stomp and swing, along with a subversive edge that made this kid stuff sound knowing to adults. As finely calibrated as anything to come out of the era's recording studios, sides like "Young Blood," "Searchin'," and "Along Came Jones" are definitely raucous, definitively hilarious. Inspirational verse, from "I'm a Hog for You": "One little piggy ate a pizza / One piggy ate potato chips / But this little piggy's comin' over your house / He's gonna nibble on your sweet lips." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Fee Fee Fi Fi Fo Fo Fum.......2007-07-09

I smell smoke in the auditorium.

Years ago, Amazon sold a CD by the "Coasters". It was a fake ripoff, and disappeared shortly.

This is the real deal, and highly recommended for anyone who likes 50's Do Wop.

5 out of 5 stars Good Ole Goodie.......2007-06-21

All their great hits are on this CD along with songs that are good, but you may not have heard much on the radio(Run Red Run, What about us, I'm a Hog for you and Idol with the Golden Head) in the early days of rock n roll. If you liked the Coasters then, you'll enjoy listening to them all over again on this CD because these are the original songs with great sound clarity. Rhino usually does a pretty good job of producing the top 40 versions of the songs we grew up listening to. But on this CD they got them all right. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Coasters..........2007-02-03

For me, "Cell Block #9" is the cut that cracks me up. Technically, it's not even a "Coasters" tune, I believe it was peopled with personnel from the group, however. I can only imagine what teens in the 50's must have thought of this music (being a teen in the 70's myself!). What a groove the kids must have gotten off the music, back then! Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars MUST GET.......2007-01-12

this cd is excellent in quality and variety of their best hits. extremely satisfied

    5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking..........2007-01-31

I own over 50 soundtracks and this one is without question the best. Track number 5 is my favorite. Mostly orchestral arragment with violin solos, absolutely beautiful. Hard to find, but worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars This is beautiful!.......2006-09-04

Ever since 6th grade Ive seent this movie at least once a year, and I cry every time, its a beautiful story, and the soundtrack is just as bewitching, if not more. Coalwood, is my favorite song, and after each time I watch October sky, its in my head for weeks. This CD is well worth the money, trust me.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-06-05

Mark Isham has outdone himself with this ingenious soundtrack. I owned this cd not too long after the movie was released on dvd. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my car along with other cds. Now you can't touch it for less than $45. The score truly depicts the era and location of the story. Having lived in West Virginia I can see the coal mines and the haunting mist that covers the mountains when I hear the opening score. If the cd becomes available to you, grab it fast! This one is well worth your money.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-05-19

Mark Isham is a genious. This is a brillant composition with wonderful melodic contrast, inspired dynamic swells, and a wonderful performance by some equally inspired violin and woodwind players (mostly violin here).

This disk, if you can ever get one, is easily worth $45.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Soundtrack.......2005-08-26

I had tried and tried ever since I saw the film (which is also awesome) for months on end to get a copy of the October Sky soundtrack, without, of course, paying $45 for a used copy on here. My parents finally bought it for me for Christmas, but I never really got around to listening to it until 7 months later. Man, I didn't realize how great this CD is! The hauntingly beautiful score (highlights: Coalwood, Sputnik, Auk 13, Miss Riley, October Sky) by Mark Isham is so moving it can put a lump in your throat; while the handful of 40's/50's songs add an element of fun to the soundtrack, even if they do sometimes come in at awkward moments in the album.
All in all, this is an awesome album which is probably in my top 7 favorite soundtracks (and I am some-what of a 13 year old connoisseur of good soundtracks [particularly scores]).
This CD is great for fans of scores, fans of the movie, or some one who just wants a break from their "Apollo 13" soundtrack.

    5 out of 5 stars A great reissue.......2006-11-05

This CD is a reissue of the Highland/DeLuxe CD (one of the first Coasters CDs ever), this time distributed by Gusto (formerly King Records). The CD contains the 12 Leiber-Stoller produced recordings originally done for Date/Columbia in the late '60s and for King Records in the early '70s, with several classic recordings (D.W. Washburn, Soul Pad, Love Potion Number Nine, and others) - all featuring the original Coasters (with Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Speedo Carroll and Will "Dub" Jones (the latter substituted by new bass singer Ronnie Bright on the early '70s recordings). Well that is not enough - the CD also contians eight "revival" recordings done direct for Gusto in the late '70s by a "phony" Coasters group including Billy Guy and Will Jones (who by then had left the original Coasters and soon would start a "competing" West Coast "Coasters". Get this high quality CD - but remember - the famous songs of the 1950s on this CD are the Guy-Jones fake Coasters (not the original hits). - Claus Röhnisch

5 out of 5 stars Did you ever hear a tenor sax swingin' like a rusty axe?.......2007-06-09

This is a collection of 51 songs by the great vocal group the Coasters. The group is remembered for classic hits like "Searchin'", "Yakety Yak", "Charlie Brown" and "Poison Ivy". This collection includes all their hits, plus some lesser known gems like "Idol With the Golden Head", "What About Us" and "The Slime". Most of their songs had a humorous slant to them, but they did occasionally record a "serious" song; like "Brazil", "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart" and "Besame Mucho". This is a great collection of great songs by one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. Here is the track listing:

          5 out of 5 stars A bit much, but............2007-04-27

This collection of the hits of the legendary comedy doo-woppers the Coasters may be a bit much for some people. But if you want to hear some of the best storytelling to a rhythm and blues beat this side of Louis Jordan, then this is for you.

Written mostly by the self-proclaimed "White Negroes" Lieber and Stoller, these guys provided the Coasters with some really funny and wry tales that had a good beat that you can dance to.

Along with the necessary "Great Big Idol With the Golden Head," "Searchin'", "Poison Ivy," "Charlie Brown" etc. we have lesser known but no lesser story songs such as "Riot in Cell Block 9," "Young Blood" (with some really good trick voices), and "What About Us," a thinly-disguised civil rights lament.

Special mention must be given to one latter tune here, "D.W. Washburn," about a lazy tramp who rejects the preaching of the Salvation Army. This picturesque audio cartoon reminds one of the "Schoolhouse Rock" type songs of the early 70s and is quite clever and memorable.

No discussion about the Coasters would be complete without special mention (and comparison) with their comedy doo-wop rivals The Cadillacs. Interesting to learn from the liner notes that these clown princes of Soul story songs occasionally shared the same members (notably Earl "Speedo" Carroll) as well as styles.

A bit much for the casual fan with 50 songs. But if you get it, you'll say like D.W. Washburn, "I do believe I got it made."

5 out of 5 stars Lemme Tell Ya A Little Story..........2004-01-05

Once upon a time (always a good way to start a tale) there was a music fan who needed a Coasters CD for his collection. He knew all the big hits, even had many of them in various compilations, but wanted a more thorough overview of their storied career. There were two choices - the first was a relatively inexpensive 16 song "Very Best Of" that covered the basics and came from a series known for decent pics, notes and information. The second choice was a 50 song two-disc set that garnered rave reviews when it first came out but was more than double the cost. It was a toss up for the notoriously thrifty collector. When a used copy of the 16 track set was found for a big price discount the choice became easier.

Thus "The Very Best Of The Coasters" moved in and filled the requisite needs at first, even tossing in a few lesser heard gems such as the hysterical "Shoppin' For Clothes" and the rousing "Run, Red, Run". The notes which featured an interview with the group's famed writer/producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were informative, and while it skimped somewhat on mentioning the contributions of the singers themselves, and by limiting itself to just 16 songs focused almost solely on the hits, it was deemed a decent purchase overall.

But as usually happens with such a consistantly good act as the Coasters he found himself craving even more. Those huge hits that we've all heard a thousand times on radio, in movies and on those cheap Hits Of The 50's compilations were somehow not as impressive stacked one on top of another without pause. Sure they were still excellent compositions, brilliantly sung and played, but they were almost TOO popular to stand out amongst other equally famous sides. On the other hand, those rarer cuts that WERE included seemed fresher, partly because they were not as familiar and partly because Leiber & Stoller were virtually incapable of cutting a bad record and so they began to hold more interest whenever the CD was played. Suddenly that 50 track two-disc set began looking more and more attractive for it would be sure to hold far more obscurities than the mere 16 track "Very Best Of" did. So our hero set out once again on his perilous journey in search of musical nirvana.

However due to those evil licensing folks who limit the time multi-label packages can be on the market (every story needs a villian) "50 Coastin' Classics" was out of circulation by this time. But our fearless hero persevered and finally found the elusive damsel in distress, slayed the dragon and bought a nice used copy (albeit at full original price) and was amply rewarded for his courage. On it he soon discovered he had been denying himself access to 34 terrific songs for far too long. Granted not every one of them was as great as "Yakety Yak" or "Charlie Brown" had been, but the joy of hearing how the Robins evolved into the Coasters over nine full tracks rather than just two as found on the "Very Best Of", including the addition of one of their best comic performances on "Framed" was worth the added price alone. And surely few casual Coasters fans have heard just how adaptable their unique style could be when applied to standards like "Brazil", "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart" and "Besame Mucho", which really stand out as evidence of their singing talent. And while most Coasters collections stop around 1961 this one continues to the dawn of the 70's and showed their skills hadn't dried up just because the hits did, as proven with the funky "Soul Pad" and the great original version of "D.W. Washburn".

As if that wasn't enough, inside this package was a thick booklet that used the same interview from the "Very Best Of" set but only here it wasn't chopped down to size, instead giving us 13 pages of recollections from the famed writing duo with extended comments on nearly every song. Plus it had a full sessionography including the much appriciated information of who sang what parts on each cut, something that was omitted entirely from the smaller hits disc. Besides all that it had lots of photos scattered throughout, an additional 9 page written introduction on the group by respected musicologist Robert Palmer and a colorful, neatly constructed folding cardboard box to store it in.

The moral of this story? Don't be a cheapskate when it comes to great music. Trust that the added expense will be worth it. Hearing the sly vocals on "What Is The Secret Of Your Success" or "The Shadow Knows", the straight-ahead rockin' on "Hey Sexy", "Wake Me, Shake Me" and "Keep On Rollin", or the hilarious reading of "Stewball" will more than bear this policy out. Besides, you'd hear plenty of the big hits they're famous for anyway without even making an effort to, so instead search out the songs that have been lost in the pages of time, many of which are the equals to their more reknowned work, and when added together show just how great these guys really were. Fifty diverse and intricately nuanced songs spread out over two discs make for a much more varied and enjoyable listening experience than you'd get by just sticking to the well-known.

So track "50 Coastin' Classics" down, stop wasting money on packages that give you less of a good thing - even if the price is cheaper - and trust your instincts. You'll live happily ever after if you do. The end.

5 out of 5 stars Dear Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller.......2002-02-18

Everybody's talkin' about Lennon, Jagger, Dylan etc. etc. Nobody seems to care about you. Well, I love you. This CD is one of the warmest, funniest, toughest there is. Thank you for "Yakety Yak", and "Poison Ivy", and "Along Came Jones", and "Shoppin' For Clothes" and all the others. Sincerely, Jacob P.S.: Give my regards to The Coasters.

5 out of 5 stars Just how serious are you?.......2000-05-07

50 Coastin' Classics is a superb collection of Coaster's music, and the production values are superior. The vocals and instrumentation are clean, without much of the muddied sound so prevalent in recordings of this era. Additionally, almost miraculously, these are original recordings, not the cheesy remakes that are flooding the market.

That said, only a true devotee of the Coasters needs this anthology. The group had only six legitimate hits, all of which are available on more concise collections. You'll have to search a bit to make sure you're getting originals, but they are out there. However, if you are a Coasters fanatic and want everything they've done in a quality package, don't pass on this one. It's outstanding!
