It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

5 out of 5 stars one of the best CDs I own.......2007-07-25

Other reviewers have gone into a lot of depth about this CD already, so I'll keep my endorsement short and to the point. The CD is fantastic and is one of the best that I own. You will never get tired of listening to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Simply addictive!.......2007-07-12

This is her best album!
Her voice is unbelievable, the delivery is amazing and the lyrics are stunning!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting sounds.......2007-07-06

For 3 months, my Norah Jones CDs have taken over my car stereo. This woman is very talented!

5 out of 5 stars The phenom Ms Jones.......2007-06-27

This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.

5 out of 5 stars Glad i bought it ( Part II )...!.......2007-06-20

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice, new, fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

The Daredevil soundtrack provided a nice boost for this previously unknown quartet from Little Rock, Arkansas. Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" and the imposing "Bring Me to Life" are clear standouts in the film, mainly because they work so well with the dramatic, eerie undertones of the storyline. They reappear here on the band's debut, alongside a selection of similarly brooding tracks that evoke pensive artists like Tori Amos and the Cranberries. Vocalist Amy Lee has the kind of voice that can cause weeks of insomnia, but on songs like "Tourniquet" and "Haunted" she belies the music's sinister mood with evenhanded spirituality, thoughtfully letting some light shine through the tempest. --Aidin Vaziri

4 out of 5 stars What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life".......2007-07-16

What you hope for if you've ever heard "Bring Me to Life", it delivers more of same from start to finish. However, clearly one-upped by nearly every track on "The Open Door".

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable.......2007-07-09

This is one of the very best CDs ever made, and one of the ONLY ones I've ever found that I can listen to from beginning to end and never skip past a single song. I think there's maybe four or five others in the world that I can say that about, and I listen to almost all types of music, from Mozart to Enya to Tool to Billie Holiday to Simon and Garfunkel to Staind to... anyway, it's a masterpiece. Some music snobs like to turn up their noses at Evanescence and mock those who listen to them because they're generally thought of as "Teenage Goth", but I have a message for them: GET OVER YOURSELVES!! BY BEING NARROW MINDED YOU ARE ONLY DEPRIVING YOURSELVES OF SOME OF THE BEST, MOST HAUNTING MUSIC YOU COULD ASK FOR!! I listen to this CD ALOT and I never get tired of it. Amy Lee is amazing! TRY IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Light in the Darkness.......2007-07-03

Fans of bands like Nightwish, The Gathering, Lennon Murphy and Lacuna Coil are either rejoicing or cursing Evanescence. Their brand of atmospheric gothic rock / metal is quite comparable to all bands mentioned above yet they are the ones in the Billboard Top 10 Album chart.

"Bring Me To Life" is a stunning track on its own merit that could stand to lose the male pseudo rap-rock vocal yelling "Wake Me Up". (If you hear the demo version without the male vocal you will understand) I find it amusing that fans of bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit are buying this disc just on the basis of this track alone only to realize that the rest of the disc is moody, dark journey into the belly of various beasts. Nevertheless, Amy Lee has a haunting voice that layers beautifully over gothic rock/metal passages much like Tarja, Anneke, Christina, and Tori Amos. "Haunted" is a short, but remarkable track that allows Amy's vocals to breathe chilling words of despair. Just read the cold words to "Imaginary" and you wonder what exact demon tortures the writer's (Ben Moody) soul.

Overall, this disc is way too deep and thought provoking for its target audience. For those of us that have supported this style of music for years, please don't pass judgment against this disc until you have experienced the overall enchantment within its 11 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Amy Lee: The most underrated voice in music today.......2007-06-27

I remember when "Bring me to life" started playing regularly on a local rock station a few years ago. I thought it was a pretty cool song and liked the vocals of female singer Amy Lee, who seemed to have a wide range and yet still able to have somewhat of an overall mystique to her sound that I still have a hard time describing to this day. At that point a friend of mine loaned me the CD, but upon the first couple of listens I put it back without a second thought.

After selling 14 million copies worldwide and having a strong sophomore release with "The Open Door", I decided to give Evanescence another chance, returning to the debut album "Fallen". Sometimes it takes giving an album a second chance to make a first impression, and this time around I guess I was ready to embrace a band that was deemed as Goth Metal by the masses, but had a female vocalist that was able to help them rise above the all too familiar growl and dirge vocal efforts that usually fall into this category. Strong singles that stand out to me start out with Track 1 in "Going Under", which has a nice, simple guitar piece that has enough grind to stay down in the darker, more brooding sounds of this style of music. Track 6 is a tune called "Tourniquet" and has some eerie tones that help it start out before breaking into a clean, balanced attack of guitars and percussion. The overall structure of this album is great, and although I said there are several singles I like, I will just sum it up by saying there is something great about every song on this album.

What really is a selling point for me, however, is the lead singer Amy Lee. Amy's voice is poetic in deliverance of the songs and has a great overall emotional connection with the music, while at the same time her range allows her to add a lot of diversity to each and every song throughout the album. Overall you have a powerful set of music that rocks when it has to, and has some piano melody to add to the mix (Track 6 and 9 in particular) that I feel sets it apart from a lot of the genre's and classifications that people have been trying to put it in. If you are not much into newer "Nu-Metal" or what have you, but enjoy some of the progressive metal sounds and intricate approaches of such musicians, you just might find Evanescence to your liking. As stated before, it took me a few years to "come back" and discover them, but the wait was worth it and I look forward to any new releases this band has to offer.

Jack Johnson has found himself a groove. Indeed, the Hawaiian surfing champion turned alternative pop-folk star really hasn't changed things one iota for his sophomore release. Fans of Brushfire Fairytales should be delighted with the results. The groove is a mellow one--most of the 16 tracks here are semi-acoustic--and that easy-going spirit filters into Johnson's lyrical philosophies. "What will be will be / And so it goes" he sings on "Times Like These," the opening track. Thankfully, Johnson is never too mellow, and there's a "Don't worry, be happy" vibe to most of his music. "The Horizon Has Been Defeated" even has a pseudo-reggae feel to it. Although classified as an alternative musician, the singer-songwriter's compositions owe much to past hits. "Traffic in the Sky" is reminiscent of Jim Croce's "Operator" and Looking Glass's one-hit-wonder, "Brandy." On the splendid "Taylor," Johnson sounds an awful lot like Donovan. And "By The Way" recalls the Lovin' Spoonful. -- Bill Holdship

2 out of 5 stars Well he is not Neil Young, let alone the second coming.......2007-08-01

This guy is way overhyped, songwriting is whiny and lacks any facts or knowledge. Guitar playing is really childish skittishes that do not really portray any talent past knowing 3 chords. Tries to act like he is some voice that represents youth but fails miserably. I added this CD to my list of things I wipe with. If you really want to hear an acoustical session that proves this guy sux, there are some others out there. Marketing is the key in todays music world instead of talent and that is why this guy sells records. The lyrics suk, he is just crying and whining from visuals he gets from NPR or something, and that alone is enough to put someone to sleep. Boring, bad and will not be heard of in twenty years. I wish the next Hendrix or Neil Young would please stand up because the posers in here right now annoy me.

5 out of 5 stars On and On.......2007-06-13

Considering I first heard this DVD sitting in my dentist's chair having a tooth extracted, you wouldn't believe it's effect. It certainly helped take my mind off the immediate situation. Beautiful music, soothing mellow voice and a delight to hear at any time.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT STUFF!.......2007-06-08

A great, laid-back, very mellow CD that can put you right on the beach, with a drink in your hand, watching the waves roll in.... even if you are sitting in your office in front of your computer. A must have if you love acoustic guitars! I HIGHLY recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Album.......2007-05-30

I love Jack Johnson! I have a more recent album and thought nothing could top it, but this one does. The lyrics are thoughtful, the melodies are catchy. I drove up and down the coast listening to this CD and never got sick of it.

5 out of 5 stars Jack--always a classic.......2007-05-15

This record is one of his best... I would recommend it for new listeners of Jack Johnson who are just beginning to explore his musical awesomeness.

In the opening track of this live CD, Michael Bublé explodes "I'm feeeling GOOD!" Who could blame him? He's backed by a big--make that a really big--band, and the song sounds like a million bucks. You may quibble that Bublé is a nice fellow who's a bit lacking in both the charisma and swing departments, but the music here percolates with bouncing energing--just listen to "Summer Wind" or "The More I See You" to see how glorious arrangements (by Johnny Mandel and John Clayton Jr., respectively) can propulse a reasonably gifted but by no means transcendent singer into the stratosphere. Best of all, Bublé once again shows his ability to seamlessly bridge eras and styles by offering stylistically consistent covers of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" (done swing-style) and Lou Rawls' 1976 hit "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" (done crooner-style in a duet with Italian singer Laura Pausini). (The DVD offers up a similar take on Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," for instance.) The DVD portion of this combo set doubles the ante by offering 18 tracks (plus a bonus "Song for You" with Chris Botti) to the CD's 8. There's also a 20-minute backstage featurette showing what goes into the preparation for the show. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Sensational young crooner Michael Buble stars in his first "Great Performances" PBS special this holiday season: that and his August live performance at the Wiltern in Los Angeles will be seen and heard in this CD/DVD package. Now Buble takes yet another giant step in his meteoric career.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!.......2007-08-01

I first saw this DVD in part at Best Buy in the TV section and thought--"who is this guy? I love it!" So after buying his newest CD there was still a missing component for me. This DVD will make you twice the MB fan--he's so fun to watch and then when you listen to the included CD of the live performances you are brought right back to the stage and his wonderful voice. It is a great buy--you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great value!.......2007-07-25

I love this music. Great orchestra backing up the songs with fantastic arrangements and musicianship. The vocals are done with taste and excitement.

4 out of 5 stars Buble'.......2007-07-22

If it weren't for the DVD, this rating would have been a 3 star. The DVD is great, but the CD doesn't contain all the songs from the DVD, and the editing is terrible. As an example, Michael introduces his #1 hit song as the next number, but another song follows! Michael still sounds good as ever but given a second chance, I would probably purchase another of his CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-07-21

You get the best of both worlds with Michael's "Caught in the Act": a CD with some of the songs from the live concert and, of course, the DVD so you can see Michael's superb performance. Thank God a young singer finally came along who appreciates the great standards of yesteryear and who sings them superbly. You couldn't ask for anything more. Bravo Buble.

Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

For me, that's plenty nuff said, right there!
I don't get blindsided like I did when I caught his act somewhere in the music and was left to wonder "What and Who was THAT?..WoW" Same thing happened during the last membership drive for OPB...caught a snippet...then my dtr in law sent me his album. I thought, Who the heck's Jack Johnson? Now I know. It put the name to the music that haunted me and oh boy is he something else. Fabulous. I think I could probably be happy as a big ol fat mud hen, just to take this CD and maybe a Macy Gray and some Shawn Mullins...and go to that proverbial deserted island, a happy camper. Food?...Well at least my soul would be well fed. I've had a Dave Koz CD in the car's player for 2 yrs. It will finally get to come in the house for a well-deserved rest, while this one goes traveling for a while! The back-up for his vocals are totally outstanding. Nobody can say that I "don't know Jack", anymore; that's for sure! Looking for a new and totally addictive, musical high?....Here 'tis! A beautiful baker's dozen.

Those who know Jack Johnson only as college radio fave are in for a pleasant surprise here, as are wave-riding aficionados with a taste for eclectic, cooled-out musical vibes. The project Surfer magazine hailed as 2000's Video of the Year was originally a collaboration between surfing champ/then-USC film student Johnson and school colleagues Chris and Dan Malloy. But Johnson also gratifyingly took the opportunity to prove that "surf music" is purely a subjective term; indeed, electric instruments are few and far between here, let alone the traditional buzzsaw licks of such genre stalwarts as Dick Dale and Gary Hoey. Instead, Johnson has stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album's "Holes to Heaven" and the sprightly instrumentals "Moonshine" and "Cove," while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy "Rainbow." Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental "Hobo Blues" and laconic "Honor and Harmony." But its also a collection that ventures as far afield as The Meters' 70's-funky "Liver Splash"., Finley Quaye's spare soul, the folk-raga of Kalyanji/Anadji's "My Guru" and the spacey, haunting "Dark Water and Stars" by Natural Calamity. --Jerry McCulley

thicker than water is a great movie, thicker than water is a great sountrack, the blend of instrumentals and vocals is perfect, a perfect cd for listening while driving to your favorite surf spot itll give you a good attitude for going out into the water, all songs are GREAT but I really like rainbow and underwater love! g love is cool too

4 out of 5 stars Redefining Surf Music - Jack & Friends.......2006-10-29

Jack takes beach music beyond the Beach Boys and Dick Dale and redefines the laid back sound of the surf. Jack contributes to a few track both solo efforts and with G. Love - the great, but simple Rainbow Blues. This album is great and gets better with repeat listings. Buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Thicker Than Water.......2006-07-25

A collection of songs from some great musicians. I really liked the title track "Thicker Thank Water" by Todd Hannigan. [...]

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!! Love Jack's music!.......2006-07-25

Jack Johnson is the greatest new artist on the market. This cd is awesome. Matt Costa and G.Love sound good with Jack, love the Rainbow song.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2006-07-08

I had all of Jack Johnson's other albums before I purchased this one. I enjoy this album. It's not all Jack Johnson which gives for a nice mix of songs. I like the songs Jack Johnson does on this album as much as any of his others, not to mention the other songs on the album are pretty good too.

I would reccomend it if you are a Jack Johnson fan or like really chill music. It's a cool album.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2007-04-16

This album is Stephen Stills at his best. It is a great mix of different styles, even to the point where the album seems somewhat fragemented. There is a hearty display of the blues, country, bluegrass, and a Latin American touch. The countryish elements are nicely blended with the Latin American slant that is so often present in Stills' music. His time in Panama truly had influence on his music. The album shows a great deal of emotion and is great musically. I think the best song on this album is "Jonny's Garden".

5 out of 5 stars Stephen Stills at his best.......2007-03-05

This is one of the greatest albums that Stills ever did. The man is a musical genius. In my opinion this one of the best albums of the seventies.

4 out of 5 stars an extremely satisfying album........2007-02-10

early 70's country/folk/rock is anathema to some, i understand. but i don't know why this is so. what's wrong with beautiful songwriting and song execution? this is an extremely satisfying album for the ears. a wide range of moods and textures are covered over the course of the recording without a false step along the way. i highly recommend this for all fans of country-rock.

5 out of 5 stars Dare I say it?.......2006-12-27

This may be one of the top five greatest albums of all time. Granted, it did take me about 3 listens to arrive at this decision, just because I was used to the CSN(Y)sound. Great country flare with all the staple elements of legit rock. This album saw Stills at the peak of his voice, songwriting, and musical chops all at the same time. I will say this is more of a masculine album, though, so you may not find many female CSN fans liking it so much. Stills wah pedal solo in "The Treasure" was alone worth the price of admission.

Album Description

With great success and momentum going before them, the David Crowder Band began the process of writing and recording their newest release, Illuminate. Having performed 251 concerts in 2002 (yet only missing 11 Sundays at University Baptist Church), Crowder says that the band was able to truly interact with its fans, consequently learning where the connections are: "We realized that, musically, their tastes were similar to ours. Just because a record is in a store doesn't mean they'll get it. Our music made sense to them. We were nervous about how the interaction would be. But, in between records, we kept getting reaffirmed that the fans really understood what we were about...that what we do is useful and significant in other people's lives. It helped us relax. It made us want to make music."

David Crowder has never been a disciplined, let's-sit-down-and-write-now kind of songwriter. "Songs come in spurts," he explains. "I am an inspirational writer. The moment will hit and I know I better find a pen and paper. There is a lot of intentionality behind my songwriting." And so it happened with the songs of Illuminate. Back in Waco, a writing spurt began as Crowder was having conversations at church about the relationships between the physics of light and Scripture. "It was definitely a 'head to heart' kind of experience when the songs came out," he says. Who knew that science would inspire worship?

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Masterpiece.......2007-06-05

I may not be the first to mention this, but this album greatly strengthened my relationship with Jesus Christ. I've always been a strong believer, but this music just takes me to new heights in my spiritual journey. Just when I thought "Illuminate" was as good as it gets, Crowder produces "A Collison" and captivates me once again.

"Wholly Yours" is just about the most profound song that I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Even the interludes have deep meanings to bridge the gap and complete the album.

The album is a true, meaningful journey of worship and praise. It is an experience that you won't be able to discover anywhere else. DCB has changed me individually and I'm so much better for it. Believe me, you will never want to take this one out of your CD player!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-12

Every cut on this CD is wonderful. There is a great variation of tempo throughout the album. I especially like Here is our King. Be more Quiet is simply haunting. Usually I don't enjoy bluegrass but I really thought I saw the Light hit just the right note

5 out of 5 stars Why I listen to it over and over.......2007-01-28

If you've seen David Crowder in concert, you will want to buy this CD. David can get 'out there' with his techno sound, but this is not like that - it's 'real' sounding. David Crowder has an awesome voice and his lyrics are pure worship, if not directly from the Bible itself. You'll find yourself singing along. The only fault I noted was 'odd' breaks between some of the songs, but it's only distracting the first time you listen to it. There's really no cut on this CD that I don't like.

5 out of 5 stars Unique!.......2007-01-10

David Crowder strikes me as someone who would be fun to know: he seems smart, committed to Christ, and creative in the extreme. This album is fun to listen to, and is definitely unique!

5 out of 5 stars I Wish it Went to 10 Stars!.......2007-01-10

This album is WOW! thats all there is to say...it so great and so sincere. You can really connect to the cd. You should definitely consider buying Illuminate too! Its even better!

Emo-rock band Jimmy Eat World exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, they produce rousing, well-crafted anthems along the lines of Third Eye Blind at their roughest or a more polished Green Day. These guys appear to be able to write ready-made singles at the drop of a hat, as evidenced by "Your House" as well as the title track. In fact, there is a rather shocking maturity to their material that belies the band members' ages (all in their 20s). While they sometimes veer into cringe-worthy power-ballad territory, overall Jimmy Eat World give the people what they want with Bleed American. --Ike Bolton

4 out of 5 stars This album made me a fan.......2007-07-28

Jimmy Eat World are a band that are adept at swinging from one extreme of mood and music to another almost seemlessly. This is the main beauty of their eponymously titled fourth album.

Opening with the heavier beats of 'Bleed American' and 'A Praise Chorus', the band sweep immediately to the other end of their musical spectrum with the gentle more emo-esque 'Your House'. Of all the tracks on the album, (or possibly all the tracks I've ever heard) 'Sweetness' has to be the most insanely catchy number I've ever heard, a cunning fusion of all their musical influences.

The album proceeds to another few infectious tracks such as 'If You Don't, Don't' and 'The Authority Song'. However the band also explore a darker side of their music with the more sombre tracks, 'Get It Faster', 'Cautioners' and 'My Sundown' that add a depth and more alternative twist to the tail end of the album.

Let's hope that this quality offering is indicative of what the band's forthcoming sixth album will be like.

5 out of 5 stars I need more Jimmy!.......2007-07-20

I need to see if they have made another record, because I have enjoyed playing this one so much. I don't dislike a single song on this record, honestly. One of my better investments, along with some records by the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon, and Damien Rice.

4 out of 5 stars Oh yeah, Jimmy Eat World.......2007-06-13

I loved this album but can anyone help me out? Can you tell me what order their other albums came out in?

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Eat World Breaks Out With this Strong Effort.......2007-05-23

Although many of the newest fans of this band probably view this as the debut self titled record from Jimmy Eat World, the fact of the matter is that these guys have been around for a while. Along with numerous EP's, the band has also released two full length albums as well before this disc, "Static Prevails" and "Clarity." This cd is by far the best of the bunch. Formerly knows as "Bleed American" (Before the 9/11 attacks which forced the band to self title the disc), this album showcases the lyrical talent of lead singer James Adkins and the combination of that with a rockin good band. The songs play out like this:

1. Bleed American- 7/10
Unlike any other song on the album, this is a heavy rocker, and a good one at that.

2. A Praise Chorus- 8/10
Catchy uptempo tune, my favorite of all the singles the band released off this album.

3. The Middle- 8/10
Can't listen to it anymore (because it was grossly overplayed on the radio), but this is the song that made me buy this album, so it is still one of the best on the cd

4. Your House- 9/10
Great song, emotional and beautiful

5. Sweetness- 7/10
Redundant at times, but still catchy

6. Hear You Me- 10/10
Beautiful ballad from a band that has one of the best ballads of all time in my opinion (For Me This Is Heaven- off of the Clarity cd)

7. If You Don't, Don't- 10/10
Unbelievably catchy song, with a great hook and a solid bridge. Best on the album.

8. Get It Faster- 6/10
Takes too long to build up, I lose interest in this song

9. Cautioners- 9/10
Great song, another slow one from Jimmy

10. The Authority Song- 5/10
Worst song on the album, annoying to a fault

11. My Sundown- 9/10
Song that reaches deep into the mind of a troubled soul that is contemplating suicide. A true classic on the album, with beautiful background vocals.

Overall, this is a marvelous cd from a unique band. Although there are some bumps along the way, this album will serve as a smooth transition as these boys have changed from no name rockers into stadium fillin stars. The future is bright for this quartet.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Music at it's Finest.......2007-04-15

Bleed American is one most well rounded, polished, and intelligently written albums I have ever heard from any rock band. It remains to be my personal favorite.

Bleed American (Later re-released as Jimmy Eat World after Sept. 11, 2001) is a great example of lyrical and musical rock genius at its best. With an impressive variety of styles, songs range from very soft and mellow like "Hear You Me" to excellent hard rock tracks like "Bleed American". J.E.W. is able to capture youth and life perfectly through pure unadulterated great music and inspiring lyrics. Jimmy Eat World is, indeed in a class of their own. This album is a must buy for any decent rock fan.

If you are an artist at a crossroads/ "maturing point" in your career, it's a great idea to seek out the original musicians who played on music you adore and that inspire you greatly-it's the opposite of what Rick Rubin does with the old folks. The results, however, are often lackluster; it can just be too hard to forge a connection in a short period of time with studio dudes twenty to thirty years older than you. Chan Marshall, who took just three years between albums this time, returned to Memphis to record with many of the architects of Southern soul music at Ardent Studios on The Greatest. And from the first and titular tune, a mournful and gorgeous ballad with swelling strings, backing singer and shimmery guitar accompaniment that tells the tale of a boy who wants to become a great boxer, it's clear that the results of this experiment are uniformly awesome. The sultry-voiced artiste sounds fully at home within these songs, these lovely analog Southern sounds that bridge black and white musics. It's not like she's on a trip of trying to be Aretha or anything; besides, the arrangements on all the songs are different. The loping, fiddle-accented "Empty Shell" sounds like the Unholy Modal Rounders backing Bobbie Gentry. All the songs are pretty, slow and melancholy; there's nothing like "He War" on here. We are not in the habit of quoting press releases, but it's hard to beat this line from the Matador one-sheet: "If Alex Chilton were today a beautiful young woman, he'd sound like this." Amen, or something. -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

This is not a greatest hits album, despite the title. It contains all-original songs written by Chan Marshal (professionally known as Cat Power), and features the great Memphis session musicians Teenie Hodges on guitar, Leroy Hodges on bass (Al Green, Hi Rhythm Section), drummer Steve Potts, and more. The combination of Marshall's superbly evocative and flexible voice plus some of the greatest Southern soul players, has produced a masterpiece. These songs explore themes of Southern loss, longing, and marginality. The limited first digipak pressing and regular single vinyl contain a bonus track. After the first pressing sells out, the regular jewelcase version will not contain a bonus track.

2 out of 5 stars Cat Power stumbles and takes a nose dive in her songwriting skills........2007-07-29

I'm a man who's listened to the hell out of the CDs "Moon Pix" and had to by You Are Free twice because i listened to it so much, so I was excited as a school girl when I purchased the new album The Greatest but wow was I saddened at how leadin and boring this record is. At first, I thought I've just gotta give it some time. Well, I did; about 10 listens and I still cant hear any melodies. And the backing bad is horrible. I'm sure they were talented in their time but they're past their peak. I live in Chicago and I could throw a stone in any blues bar and I guarantThe Greatestee you whoever it hits has got a better band. The prozac Chan is on has her completely sedated and boring.
But as a serious fan and someone who probably has an unhealthy obsession with how hot she is - i soldiered on and thought, "maybe, I've got to see Cat Power perform live and then I'll appreciate the album." Nope, the album is just as boring live and she refused to perform any older material. And the band, cheezzzyyy. They wouldn't even be allowed to play in any Chicago Blues Bar. They'd be laughed outta town with their broken teeth in their hands. I'd been telling everyone about Cat Power for years and once she started getting all this media attention everyone I know bought this album and came back at me with," what kinda wimpy and tedious stuff is this?" Avoid this album, it's not only her worst but the worst and most over-appreciated album of 2006.

4 out of 5 stars Best yet.......2007-06-15

Teaming Cat Power with the Hi team who recorded behind Ann Peebles and Al Green was an unexpected and brilliant idea. A special alchemy took place at Ardent Studios in Memphis which enhanced both Cat Power's gorgeous smoky voice and the soulful groove the band has laid down. I would say that that it was worth the price of the album just for the majestic opening song, The Greatest, were it not that it is also available as a single, but that would be to unfairly demean the rest of the record. Of course Cat Power does not need embellishment, as is demonstrated on the unadorned song Hate. Cat's most accomplished album to date.

3 out of 5 stars The Greatest.......2007-06-08

Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) is by now well known for her inconsistent live performances. See her on Friday and she'll croon for hours. See her on Saturday and she'll hunch over the piano with a bottle of Jack, muttering diatribes under her breath before running offstage in tears. Taken with her tortured lyricism and sprawling full-lengths, these actions painted Cat Power as simultaneously brazen and insecure, and as such, she helped redefine the notion of the independent musician by living out the discomfort that came from composing exactly what she felt she needed to compose.

So what would Cat Power think upon hearing that she'd receive a hefty recording budget and play with Al Green's hit-makers at the same studio as Dave Matthews and R.E.M.? If you said, "She would run screaming into the night," you're wrong. Abandoning the oblique, quietly angsty indie rock of You Are Free, Cat Power cuts her teeth on Southern soul for her seventh LP, The Greatest. She recorded the album in Memphis at the world-famous Ardent Studios with veteran soul musicians Mabon Hodges, Leroy Hodges and Steve Potts, for a detour into a singer-songwriter's take on Memphis blues-lite.

This is indeed an impressive setup, but The Greatest still falls a bit short. Yes, Potts and the Hodges brothers are supposed to ballast Marshall, not upstage her, but they're not given nearly enough to do--a twang here, a lazy drum fill there, and all performed with a disappointing lack of élan. Fault the studio, too, for rendering the album's second half somewhat limp and same-sounding, and for some of the album's biggest blunders: in roughly half the songs, for example, Marshall's voice appears as a ghosted backing vocal, like a gospel singer from beyond the grave. It's sillier than it sounds.

Cat Power hardly lets these flaws derail the entire album, however, since the strength of her records has always been in the arrangements, vocals and lyrics--not the studio techniques or the backing band. Marshall's voice has never sounded better than it does here; coarsened by whiskey and time, her vocals take on a torchy, sultry tone that fits the music like a glove.

The album's first half also features some of Cat Power's loveliest songs to date. If the gently swinging ditty "Could We" is perfect for playing over the barroom juke as young couples sway on the dance floor, "Lived in Bars" is the moonlit slow-dance after the barroom has closed down for the night. The title track is the album's crown jewel, beginning as an archetypal Cat Power piano arrangement and adding guitars, strings, and a slowly loping drumbeat like ripples in a pond. Far from being a song of fist-pumping glory, "The Greatest" is actually a saddening white flag; Marshall begins, "Once I wanted to be the greatest / No wind or waterfall could stop me." Anyone who knows Cat Power can easily conjecture what becomes of our narrator from here.

Yet what's missing from The Greatest are those gripping moments found on You Are Free and earlier, more overtly tense albums like Myra Lee. There's more drama in a song like "Names" (from You Are Free) than in anything The Greatest has to offer, and it's not because Marshall holds back lyrically; she doesn't, if bald-faced confessions like "I hate myself and I want to die" are any indication. It's because she allowed the Memphis soul theme drive the work to its final destination, and somewhere along the way it became more important to sound pretty than to create something meaningful. The Greatest is Cat Power's most listenable record thus far, but for an artist this willfully difficult, is that really a success?

3 out of 5 stars overall worth it.......2007-05-19

It's not her best career work, but similar to her live performances there are some magic moments that make the CD worth it. She puts out such heartfelt work it's hard not to support it.
