Finnish Metal Masterpiece.......2007-05-17
Not the best metal band in the world, but they do deserve a lot more credit than they have been given. I love this band and they have a great style. Listening to this cd makes me want to go to Finland for the wintertime. Buy this cd, you won't be disappointed.
progress in winter metal.......2005-11-23
This is a good buy for two full discs of music. You really hear a band find it's sound and get much better in the process. And as they get better they hopefully will now get bigger. Some of the older stuff is muddy due to a limited budget I would guess, but some has some real doomy almost sorrow moments that I really like and wish they would incorporate more of. If you like black, death or other extreme metal with a progessive slant check this band out.

Based on the novel "Within the Ancient Forest" by vocalist Andrew Tompkins, the soaring music of this release, their second album, takes you into a mythical world of fantasy and adventure. They manage to blend melodic and sorrowful doom progressions and immensly powerful death metal and vocals with harmonious male and female singing, piano, cello, harpsichord, flute and acoustic guitar. Note* All Novel and CD combo's should be listed under "Collectible"

Personal Favorite.......2005-03-23
This is my personal favorite record they have done. I like that it is more music without vocals....I do like Andrew's vocals however (breathy deep death metal vocals)....but I think the music here is his BEST to date! If you like Doom Metal you might like this album but I suggest trying "exhumed of the earth" first...This one has more violin/female vocal interludes.....I find it very calming at times with the violin and female vocal mix.

New 2004 release from the Australian artists Mortification. This is available in the US as an IMPORT only!!! Don't miss out on their 12th studio album which returns to the band's roots in thrash/death metal.
Customer Reviews:
Finally..........2005-04-06
Finally, Mortification has released a good cd. They haven't had a good cd since 1993's Post Momentary Affliction! Brain Cleaner is the cd that should've followed Post Momentary Affliction instead of Blood World. Steve Rowe is growling again, and not the high, wimpy growling that's more like talking. His growling is sometimes low, and other times, the really deep growling as was on Scrolls of the Megilloth, and Post Momentary affliction. Lyrically, this cd is more creative than in recent years, but not quite as creative as Mortification's earlier stuff. Nonetheless, the lyrics are still Satan-hating. This is not a perfect cd, but still a breath of fresh air for fans of early Mortification.

This is the fourth and most aggressive album yet from Australia's pioneering doom death metal group. The album has the band's signature style, with violins and soprano vocals adding an operatic tone to the death metal. The storyline of the album follows a nineteenth century traveller.
Customer Reviews:
A bittersweet album for long-time Paramaecium fans.......2006-01-10
Paramaecium's much anticipated fourth album incorporates elements of prior works as well as a few new twists, including some groove-oriented material. The style is mostly mid-paced doom metal similar to their third album, A Time to Mourn, but with more instrumentation and complexity, as is found in their album, Within the Ancient Forest. But while there is much to enjoy in the new album, it appears that nothing will surpass the power and creativity of the old Tompkins/De Ron/Burton/Sherlock line-up.
Production is good for the most part. The most noticeable area of improvement is that the rhythm guitars aren't EQed as well as one might like. I'll need to listen to it more carefully through some studio headphones before I can be sure, but it sounds like there's a bit too much boost in the 2K-3K range, and perhaps in the 600Hz-800Hz range as well. As a result, at times the guitar comes off sounding a bit too "fuzzy" for doom metal
As was the case with A Time to Mourn, most of the rhythm tracks are rather simple compared to those on the Exhumed of the Earth and Within the Ancient Forest albums. I suspect that this is due to the departure of Jason DeRon and Chris Burton from the band. Also, I would have liked to see Andrew Tompkins incorporate more of his growling style into the songs on which he sings. Specifically, in my "mind's ear" I can hear him backing up or trading off with growls on the tracks, "Night Fears Morning," "They Tend to Die," and "I," as he did with Tracy Bourne on the track, "My Failing Heart." This was a nice feature of the Within the Ancient Forest album on tracks like "Song of the Ancient" and "Gone is My Former Resolve," and I think it would have made Echoes from the Ground an even better album.
Despite all this, there is much for doom metal fans to enjoy in Echoes from the Ground, and although it may not be Paramaecium's best album, it's still a worthy purchase.
Doom Metal.......2005-11-10
"Echoes From the Ground" is a great album. I recommend this album to all lovers of doom metal. There's really not much more to say. Heavy guitars, violins, operatic female voices. Sweet.
a doomy classic.......2005-10-26
Paramaecium is the best doom metal band on the planet. Don't be fooled by other so called doom bands. They only want to be this good. Paramaecium use a great mix of vocals with operatic to growling to very low almost monotone sing-speak. This is the doom album for the ages.
death metal??.......2005-03-23
I find it sad that so many classify paramaecium as "death metal".....it has its influences but is called "doom metal".....its slower..period.
This record is typical Paramaecium.....I mean I LOVE EVERY record Andrew Tompkins has put out! I find this one has his trademark "doom" sound. I like it quite a bit...there is MORE interludes of violin etc this time. I think the female vocals are always nice because he places them in the RIGHT spot. This is very atmospheric Doom metal at it's finest! Some compare it to "My Dying Bride" but Paramaecium has their own sound. While not for everyone it's still worth checking out! Its beautiful and haunting!

Album Description
In their quest for separation of the races, the former Apartheid regime in South Africa inadvertently laid the basis for an archive of some of the most beautiful music on the planet. The original thinking behind the recordings made by the South African Broadcasting Corporation was to divide the black population along racial and tribal lines through the use of music. As the state controlled the airwaves, the SABC became a tool for its propaganda and set up various regional stations that were known as Radio Bantu, the regime's term for the oppressed majority.
For struggling musicians during the Apartheid era, the opportunities to record their music was lure enough. Record companies that serviced the black community were few and far between and the major labels, to their eternal shame, focused more on selling to the affluent white community. As a result, SABC's mobile studio visited every corner of the country recording the whole glorious range of music available across the country. As a result, the SABC's archives were bursting with everything from stately traditional choirs to the electrifying sound of the urban Mbhaquanga sound. The music on this release has been treated with respect but given a new lease of life. Ambient Africa is a revelation, a new dawn.

Everytime you listed to this CD you will discover something new about the music, its rich and beautiful and almost all the tracks are great (my most favorite are 1, 5 and 8)
Outstanding.......2007-05-25
I am rarely driven to writing reviews, but this is a truly remarkable evolution in South African music-- The Living Souls explore new sonic ground while maintaining true to their roots. It is lightly colored with electronica, ambient, and world music. While reminiscient of Paul Simon's Graceland, they stay closer to home.
Very good album.......2005-09-08
Many thanks to the Living Souls for this album. Bazoyidela is the must have.

Customer Reviews:
Buy this album .......2006-07-15
Buy this album now! I bought Your Caress/Sleepless Remorse a few months ago, and have not stopped listening to them ever since. This is not the heaviest doom/death metal material out there, but very good sounding nonetheless.Ian Arkley is a great guitarist, worth hearing, with a range from soft acoustic tones to brutal metal riffing, and his volcals range from some singing or spoken parts, to full on death metal growls. What makes Ashen different from other bands, however, are the keyboards and vocals of Melanie-Sarah Bolton. They add a hauntingly melodic tone to the music, which reminds me of some of Paramaecium's material. It is actually hard to say which album I like more, both have many good qualities. Sleepless Remorse is nearly twice as long as Your Caress, with a couple tunes appearing twice, in differing levels of production. My favourite songs from Sleepless Remorse are 'Faded Tapestry' and the title track, whilst my favourite songs from Your Caress are, once again the eponymous song, as well as 'Our Eden' for its striring, driving music and words. Well worth listening to, from what is currently my favourite British band.

Product Description
Originally released in 1997, only a few high priced copies fo this futuristic, ground-breaking masterpiece made it to the U.S.A. This Australian band, led by Neil Johnson (aka as Galacticus Sarcophagus) was shrouded in mystery, as members of another well known extreme band from Australia wanted to keep their identities under wraps. Not for the faint of heart, musically, expect nothing less than extreme metal with some cyber-industrial leanings. This is not your mothers extreme metal band! Lyrically, Screams deals with the responsibilities and dangers of the scientific realm. Coming from a strong Viking heritage, Galacticus poses some disturbing scenarios! Rounding out this reissue are two essential bonus tracks. Remember comes from the EXTREME TRUTH COMPILATION, Volume 3 originally released on Rowe Productions in the 90's. In the Name of God is a brand new song recorded earlier this year, specifically for this reissue. Johnson was in New York City for the 9/11 tragedy, and this is what came from his experience. Dont miss out on this sought after classic! No one, and we mean NO ONE sounds like Screams of Chaos!
Customer Reviews:
Screams of Chaos.......2006-08-20
Note to yourself that this was recorded in 1996, and for an old 90s band like this, this is a classic. However, this album would stand out average , or below average in the present. The talent and the music seems average, but they chose to try out something that was rarely done. There is some cybergrind influence, especially in the vocals, and also in the vocals are Death Metal/Black Metal influence. Screams of Chaos protests on the future and the ability to experiment on "The Genetics" and what consequences are involved in this, and how the abilities to genetically alter the human race can seperate us from Christ. For this reason, they chose cybergrind, and Industrial Metal influences, which probably explains the background of the music. This one is worth to listen.
average, but hardly typical.......2006-08-09
First off, don't take the 3 star rating as an insult. This disc is hard to evaluate because, while I only find the music moderately entertaining and the skill very average, the concept and mixture of styles is quite diverse. Each song deals with a futuristic world where genetic mutants end up in battle with humans, and one hears groaning robotic voices, interspersed with shrieks, saying things like "please don't kill me, master." That gains them creativity points. The music itself has a predominant dark industrial beat throughout, especially with what sound like synthesized drums. At the same time, there is much black metal here, especially in the vocals, and characters are given unique vocals. There are moments of doom, and some death and just plain old heavy metal as well. But the black industrial element is prevalent. Toward the end, the singing became more traditionally metal, but still with a special quality that took me awhile to peg. Finally it hit me--they were reminiscent of King Diamond!
The bottom line is, there was little here which would bring me back to numerous repeat listens, but it was interesting to analyze the first few times through. Some could give it 5, some less than 3. Certainly, the conceptual creativity and compositional diversity is not average, though the musicianship is. Worth a listen.
