Product Description
Tony Owens is an 'underground Hero' who Lived in the Shadows of the Big Names During Soul Music's Golden Age. Although his Name May Be Unknown to the Masses and Almost Forgotten by Many Soul Fans, Owens is Highly Respected by Real Soul Connoisseurs who Rightly Consider Him to Be on of the Great Unknowns. Despite the Fact that He Wasn't a Prolific Recording Artist, Having Less Than a Dozen 45s Issued in a Period of Twenty-four Years, Owens was a Big Attraction in his Native City of New Orleans and He Built Up a Small but Loyal Following Overseas, Particularly in Europe and Japan.

After four decades toiling in the record business with little more than a fervent cult following to show for it, Bettye LaVette can seem like soul music's equivalent of Roy Hobbs, protagonist of the bittersweet baseball fable The Natural. Whether this riveting collection of ten covers by an eclectic range of contemporary female singer/songwriters will change the husky-throated Detroit native's fortunes seems irrelevant: Its spare, dusky groove and intensely emotional, in-the-moment performances seem utterly disconnected from concerns as trivial as fame and fashion. A forceful, timely reminder that soul thrives on the singer and not the song, LaVette doesn't so much cover these songs as reinvent them from the inside out, be it the chilling, a capella read of Sinead O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" that opens the album, a gritty take of Lucinda Williams' "Joy" where the singer burns with a fire that might make Tina Turner envious or her recasting Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow" as bluesy omen and "How Am I Different" by Aimee Mann as inviting, r&b shuffle. In a musical era where soulful authenticity and emotional resonance are too often virtual, this album is a delicious dose of the Real Deal. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
With one eye on the intimate concept albums Sinatra invented at mid-'50s Capitol, and the other on the gritty yet sophisticated soul records produced at Atlantic in the '60s, this release offers ten songs that tell the story of Bettye LaVette. Recording stints at Motown, Atlantic, Epic, and a host of smaller labels left her with dreams to burn, and she pours every moment of hope and heartbreak from her 44 years in music into her tough-minded new collection. Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices. For every moment of fear and loss, there's an answering moment of triumph and defiance. The songs are from such artists as Sinead O'Connor, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, Rosanne Cash, Dolly Parton, Aimee Mann, and more.

great album.......2007-06-14
I heard a couple of samples of Betty LaVette on a website. I really enjoed what I heard so I bought the album.
It was good investment, the album is great, it takes a bit of listening to, and you need to take time out to listen to it, it is not background music. Enjoy
Amazing woman..........2006-07-05
If you're a fan of classic soul, this womans work is a must in your collection. Her powerful, raspy, raw voice, together with some amazing lyrics will have you listening to these tracks over and over. Check out 'Down to Zero'... I can't stop listening!
Betty Lavette.......2006-07-04
I had not heard her before, only read about her. I discovered I don't really like her! Just don't like the style
Excellent!.......2006-06-30
This CD was one that Amazon prompted me to consider based on the "people like you bought this" technology. And lo and behold, they were spot on! I like to play this CD while working out--nothing like "Joy" or "Why am I Different" to get the blood going. Yes, these songs are "he done me wrong" songs but so what? This is what women talk (and evidently, sing) about.
There are only two songs on the album that I would say are 4 stars as opposed to 5--the opening song by Sinead O'Conner and the closing song by Fiona Apple. It's not that these are bad songs just that Bettye LaVette's interpretation of them was not quite what I was expecting. But that's me...others here seem to like them quite a bit.
Outstanding CD but Amazon's Product Review is PC lame!.......2006-05-16
Let's get the quick negative out of the way first. In Amazon's Product Description, the anonymous writer opines, "Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices." Really? Were you told to say that at the last NOW meeting? Why is male-bashing a part of a "product description"? Shame on Amazon for allowing Political Correctness to run amok.
Now, on to the CD.
If you grew up listening to music in any large, gritty, urban area, you can't avoid music like this - nor would you want to. Motown and Stax are the foundation for the pure soul unearthed in this music. It'll grab you, twirl you around, and make you dizzy with delight. Hypnotic in every way, from the vocals to the arrangements, it's bound to spend months non-stop in your CD player. It's music you can introduce to your friends and they'll thank you a thousand times over.
Put it on, clear your calander, and enjoy the ride. Highly recommended.

This guest-studded CD relaunched Buddy Guy's career and set him toward the pinnacle of contemporary blues. Despite turns from Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and others, it's Guy who burns brightest--and loudest. He delivers roaring, exuberant performances of classic R&B ("Mustang Sally"), old-time blues ("Black Night"), and house rockers ("Where Is the Next One Coming From"). Most poignant, though, is his seven-minute instrumental "Rememberin' Stevie," which not only rekindles the fiery spirit of his own youth, but pays sensitive tribute to his late friend and admirer Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is the blueprint for Guy's current performing style. --Ted Drozdowski

Buddy Guy's BLUES.......2007-03-21
LOVE IT
Damn right Buddy knows how to sing the blues as well as play like the very best guitar players of all time. (Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Hendrix, etc.)
Gas waste.......2006-08-06
I have wasted too much gas in my truck listening to this CD..I must take it into my house before I go broke..BUY IT
Do comebacks get any better than this?.......2006-07-29
Buddy Guy is one of my favorite blues artists, and this album is not only a fine comeback, but well deserving of the Grammy award it received in 1991. And with only 6 customer reviews here on Amazon so far of a grammy nominated album which has been on the market since 1991, I would say the album (and the artist) are grossly underappreciated.
One of my favorite songs on this album is the eponymously titled "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues"....right off the start Buddy shows he still has the strong voice, guitar work and the song writing. Another favorite which I hit repeat button many times when listening to is the instrumental "Remembering Stevie"....again, if this does not show a bluesman who hasn't lost his touch one bit, I don't know what will. Simply fantastic.
Hearing his version of "Black Night" is eerie when one remembers older versions of the same song such as the one sung by Muddy Waters in the 60's. Instead of using Vietnam though, Buddy interchanges Iraq, showing us that the blues have a timeless purpose to serve.
I love Buddy's Chess years....those are some of the best blues ever in my opinion. But this album is also excellent in its own right, and certainly deserves more notoriety than it (he) receives.
Highly recommended.
Buddy Guy Has The Kind of Blues We Want.......2006-05-20
Buddy Guy was a guitar legend before the release of Damn Right I've Got The Blues, but when this great record was released in 1990, he has been at the blues forefront ever since. This record proves that the forefront is where Guy belongs.
Cuts like "Where Is The Next One Coming From," "Too Broke To Spend The Night," and the poignant tribute to his friend Stevie Ray Vaughn, "Remembering Stevie," serve notice that Guy not only hasn't lost anything, but still has plenty to teach the younger crowd.
But by far, the title card is the most memorable. This is the kind of song that Buddy could play at the beginning of every concert for the rest of his career. Burning runs and milking every ounce out of every note, Guy grabs the listener and never lets go.
These are the kind of blues that all music lovers need. The expanded re-release is welcomed if for no other reason than to remind all of us that Buddy Guy is a superstar.
The Best!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-25
Buddy Guy is an living legend, with his self titled grammy award winning Damn Right, I've Got The Blues. Buddy represent's so much of his guitar playing ability, and enthusiasm on this 1990 grammy award winning album. Buddy influenced so many guitar legends including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, and many more. You will love the first song with those ringy notes coming right out of buddy's amplifiers titled Damn Right, I've Got The Blues. As you listen to through the album you will encounter pure enthusiasm including his 8 minute rendition of Five Long Years which is incredible. Their are classic old blues songs also provided on this Damn Right, I've Got The Blues Expanded Edition including Trouble Dont Last, and Doin' What I Like Best. Buddy Guy is one of the few blues musicians who tries to carry on the blues legacy which I greatly respect. You wont have to listen long to this album to realize how great Buddy Guy really is. With his excellent tribute rendition of Rememberin' Stevie wrote after SRV stevie ray vaughan died of a tragic helicopter crash in 1990. Buddy has nothing unreal about him................he is all about the BLUES~ Highly Recommended!

An continuation of excellence..........2007-05-25
In this recording Anita Baker continues her unique, emotionally filled ballad style. Now when I say this, understand that these songs are distinct from Rapture. No veiled repeated progressions or formulas. These pieces are of the same high quality though.
Once again Anita conveys the sense of passionate romance with a magnificent voice. Songs filled with longing. She is well accompanied by top flight musicians and the outstanding vocal quartet: Perri, i.e. the Perry sisters from Bakersfield, California. The provide a solid vocal background with rich harmonies, never intrusive, but with rich textures.
"Lead Me Into Love", "Just Because", "I Want to Know What Good Love Is" are highpoints and they draw you in.
Anita is this rare in that you can simply listen to that rich, full voice and enjoy it and normally I am the type to simply be content with that. Yet the thing is that she uses that voice to great effect to convey so much emotion. With a voice like hers, many a singer could fall back on it and you might have some nice ballads, but nothing truly engaging. Anita engages you and invests her self in the song that while impressive for her technique, never loses her accessibility.
Another must-have recording.
GOING BACK TO A GENTLER, KINDER TIME!.......2005-12-29
This is Anita's finest album ever. You can feel the love this lady has for her husband. Ms Anita Baker has brought "love" back from the 80s to a much-needed timeframe of the "now and ever so hateful" new millenium! Anita takes me back to a time when the Black woman loved to be put a pedestal..have her toes kissed..to be loved, caressed & courted..to be worshipped. The 80s were a time when a Black man, like Anita's man, wasn't considered "weak" because he is loving man. Thank you Anita for sharing the love you have for your man, and reminding Black women everywhere that a man who is kindhearted like me should not be made fun-of or spat-upon, but rather admonished, uplifted and respected. Thank you, Ms Baker for great hits like "Giving You the Best I Got" & "Precious"--reminders that genuine love still does exists amongst the often dark & turid background of today's mindset of "Girl, get him before he gets you" and "We're going to eat you nice guys alive". Thank you for that wonderful voyage through time when the good Black men had the love of our Black women.
An essential album for all true jazz and R&B fans........2005-09-09
This all-time classic was one of 1988's truly superior R&B albums. At a time when most Urban R&B was losing its soulfulness and essence at an alarming rate, Baker (thankfully) refused to compromise her artistry and talents--in the end, she came up with a real winner in every way. "Just Because", "Lead Me Into Love", "Priceless", "Good Love" and the title track are timeless ballads from one of the greatest R&B and jazz DIVAS of all time.
Giving You The Best That I Got.......2005-08-06
Can we give this 10 stars?? Back when this album was released, I wasn't really into comparing artists' new works to previous works so didn't really know what to expect from Anita. It was interesting reading some previous posts about the pressure that she probably felt to somehow top 'Rapture'- her huge crossover album.
Well, in my opinion, the two albums tied! Both are "no skipping required" discs and it's funny to look back on how the QUALITY of music was the standard back then vs now when you could spend up to $20 for one cd and find maybe 3/4 good songs on a 17 track disc.
GYTBIG is just sheer listening perfection & pleasure for me. (Also give props to the inimitable Perry Sisters as Anita's backing singers!!! A true match made in music heaven.) It's a complete love story from the opening refrain. I love all of the songs but favorites are: 'Priceless', 'Lead Me Into Love' & 'Just Because'.
If you're trying to build your collection, you will not be disappointed - this is truly one of the best r&b albums ever put together. It works on all levels: vocal production, music production even the song selection order..each songs just flows so perfectly into the next. If you get it, happy listening!
Diva To The Max -- Five Stars Is Not Enough !!.......2005-06-14
Anita Baker is well known in the circles of contemporary music and jazz music. I believe she is a musical genius. All you need to do is use your ears!!! Plus, look at her credits. For instance, this album features her as executive producer. The musicians chosen to work on this album are the cream of the crop.
This album in particular features many of Anita hits, and most of the songs are still played on the radio stations across the nation daily. "Lead Me Into Love" is a divine ballad. Anita reaches passion highs and lows in her vocals. The title song "Giving You The Best That I've Got" is a glorious rich ballad! "Good Love" is a passionate ballad. "Rules" is riddled with emotion and soul!! The finale "You Belong To Me" has Anita reaching into the raw corners of sensation.
Anita Baker's vocals are so easy to listen to. Her subtle and soulful vocals have very fine depth and passion. She brings pop, soul, jazz, and r&b together in her music. Anita Baker is the Ella Fitzgerald of this generation!

The Price Club.......2005-04-28
"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.
"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.
A living legend.......2005-03-10
Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "
not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23
Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.
Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31
IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**
Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12
This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Master P's southern bounce is the hip-hop sound of 1998, and his soundtrack to the negligible I Got the Hook-Up! is his No Limit label displaying its plumage: the boss himself, longtime associates Silkk the Shocker, Mystikal and Mia X, new acquisitions Ice Cube (with "Ghetto Vet," one of his bleakest, bitterest tracks to date) and Snoop Doggy Dogg, a couple of members of the mighty Wu-Tang Clan for extra cred, and a whole lot of unknowns. Doesn't matter. P is the star here, and the disc's speaker-blowing grooves and easy-rolling rhymes are all his, whether he's directly involved in creating them or not: he's created a gaudy hip-hop aesthetic, and he's showing off how the talent's come to him. --Douglas Wolk

Nice Soundtrack.......2003-09-27
This soundtrack is tight. It introduces some new No Limit Soldiers as well as the songs they are coming out with. I also love the movie too. Go get this!!
No Limit's Best.......2003-05-04
This cd is No Limit's best because it showcases almost all of the crew's best rappers, including some new acquisitions of that time; Snoop Dogg, Soulja Slim, Steady Mobb'n, and Ghetto Commission to name a few.
This cd has the perfect combination of rap styles and beats to give a new listener to southern rap the true feel of New Orleans hip hop.
Sadly, this was No Limit's only cd that was truthfully enjoyable on every track. Every artist shined on this, but their solo albums that were soon to follow I Got the Hook Up just couldn't hold up to how tight they were on this soundtrack.
My Thoughts:
04 (Soulja Slim): This was the closest No Limit got to producing an amazing Mannie Fresh(Cash Money) rip off beat. Great song by Slim though.
11 (C Murder): This is the song that defines C Murder... Hard lyrics, and the constant shoutouts to other No Limit riders. Too bad all his solo outings never had any songs that sounded like this agian.
13 (Mechalie Jamison): I've never even heard of this guy before and he blew me away... Great R&B song.
16 (Kane and Able, Full Blooded): Kane and Able have never let me down, even when they were on No Limit. Full Blooded is the downfall of this song because he has no flow whatsoever. Is that Soulja Slim I hear in the background???
17 (Steady Mobb'n) Best song on the cd. Coolest beat and keyboards I've ever heard on a Beats By the Pound record.
The rest of the songs are all really great too. This was the best No Limit cd I had ever spent money on... Too bad I can't get my money back from all the other horrible NL cds i bought.
If you want a good southern rap compilation, pick this up...

Awesome.......2006-04-04
I loved the music on this cd. Thank you so much. My brother and I listen to it all the time.
Disney Always Rocks.......2005-09-29
Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.
Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19
I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.
For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22
Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.
There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.
This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."
Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.
Good CD.......2002-12-29
This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.
