These early Denny creations cover his more wildly "exotic" career phase. The first album, presented in its original "Spectra-Sonic" mono, includes the hit title track in its entire eerie swamp-varmint splendor. Other standouts are the dreamy xylophone on "Lotus Land" and the absolutely wacky "Love Dance," which sounds more like an ornithologist's orgy. The second album, in stereo, gets more intricate and oddly romantic. The best is the opener, "Shoshu Night Serenade," with its ghostly textures and the persistent ringing of bells that suggest the carriage of a typewriter. The Denny arrangement of "Ebb Tide" is also a stunner. This double volume gives listeners a clear picture of how Denny was interested less in an "authentic" Hawaii and more intrigued by an imaginary and often surreal geography. --Joseph Lanza

Tiki Party Music.......2007-05-14
This has always been regarded as one of those must have CDs if you ever wanted to throw a Tiki theme party or want to enjoy some memories of years past. It really is that good and worth having........even goes with Margaritas!
Magnificent! Bravo Martin Denny.......2006-01-05
My Dad introduced me to Exotica a long time ago. I had forgotten about it, until my brother brought it back into my life.
It combines rich layers of sounds that take you into a relaxing adventure - natural acoustic music with the healing sounds of paradise.
This CD represents the cheapest vacation you may ever take, $16. It soothes the senses while allowing you to explore an inner fantasy world elicited by the exciting sounds of tropical exotic places.

Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16
When it comes to Tiffany (and several other 1980's singers) the problem is that fans, critics and people who aren't fans won't let the singer "grow up" so to speak. They label each new album the artist puts out after 1990 as a "comeback", but really, how many times can someone make a comeback? Well, Tiffany has done it at least three times, and "Dust off and Dance" is another great album by the former teen-queen, far superior to any of the present so-called teen-queens. It should be noted, that Tiffany's album prior to this one, "The Color of Silence" is another superpb album, but with an entire different feel to it.
"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.
The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.
Highlights: Be With U Tonite, Ride It, Na Na Na
Low Points: Kama Sutra, I Think We're Alone Now (remix)
kids point of view.......2007-04-04
cd was for my daughter and she thought it was excellent.
A good attempt to comeback.......2007-01-11
Not one of Tiffany's best work. This disco-ish CD is ok, not the Tiffany that we're all familiar with. It's nice to see she's still recording, but it doesn't measure up to her earlier work. Her last CD "Color of Silence" was excellent, the songs were great. Had more feeling in it. If you're a Tiffany fan like me, then add this to your collection.
2 and half - Not Quite What I've been Expected..........2007-01-10
Well, I have to say I only start to know and love Tiffany from her come back 6 years ago, with some amazing songs like "Open My Eyes" and the exceptionally heart melting "If Only". I have absolute no idea what sort of her music in the 90s or 80s and have no intention of exploring it since the pop music from those period is a bit odd for me. Since this album was rather new and the review said it relflects her best in the past, I decided to buy it. There are some songs that quite upbeat, with lots of catchy tunes but I still prefer her previous work. This album is a bit blend, lack of emotion and there are some songs just sound alike. It's unavoidable since Trance and House just got a limited sound effect to play around with in the arragement, I think you know what I mean. Anyway, if you looking for a feel good family or even birthday party, you can go with this one. But if you fond of flowing with emotion and smooth melodies, then the last album would be the best choice.
High Energy Club Music.......2006-08-14
Well U have to be a fan of pop or club music to really enjoy this latest CD of Tiffany's .Her latetest effort is a complete 180 from her last cd THE COLOR OF SILENCE but I luv both due to the fact u get to listen to her great vocals but with that said Dust Off And Dance is the correct title for this So Get This if U WANNA DANCE! These live recordings find the seminarian-turned-new-folkie in his element: playing before an attentive, enthusiastic audience in his native New Jersey and New York, spinning mythic stories of fateful battlefields, haunted truckers, and visionary saints and lovers alike. Fronting an easygoing band of expert pickers, Richard Shindell turns in surprisingly solid covers of Little Feat and Bruce Springsteen tunes. Cry, Cry, Cry partner Lucy Kaplansky wraps Shindell's nasal, sinewy delivery in subtle harmonies, pushing the best of these songs, including "Next Best Western" and his finest, most poignant take on relationships, "Are You Happy Now," past previously recorded versions. As an introduction to Shindell's spiritual lyricism and as a live document for longtime fans, Courier is a cache of reflective, gently glowing gems. --Roy Kasten
Customer Reviews:
RICHARD SHINDELL'S "COURIER" - A TRIUMPHANT TROUBADOR.......2007-03-27
Few artists can successfully translate the strength and intimacy of a live performance onto a CD, but Richard Shindell is just the sort of rare singer/songwriter who does just that. His CD, titled "COURIER" was recorded live in New York and New Jersey, and the excitement of those performances is beautifully captured on this album. The CD opens with the title track "COURIER"-a strong foksy work told in the typical Shindell style of first person narrative. With such an impressive work as the number one track, some might worry that the rest of the CD may pale in comparison. On the contrary, it continues to get better and better with each passing song. Not only is Shindell's voice rich and expressive, but his writing is so insightful that one is reminded of other greats like Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman. His themes are serious-lost love (as told in "Memory of You" and "Nora",), War (as exhibited in the magnificent "Reunion Hill") and Prejudice ( in the song "Fishing"). Yet, Shindell's keen sense of humor helps to keep the work from being too mired down in the maudlin. For instance, in his crowd-pleasing "Are You Happy Now", he speaks about his lover who abandoned him on, of all days, Halloween. He writes "What was I supposed to do/But to sit there in the dark/ I was amazed to think that you/ took the candy with you too". By laughing through his pain, Shindell's angst becomes more powerful without being overpowering. Richard Shindell is an engaging performer with a rock-solid voice that is nothing short of mesmerizing, yet his greater talent is his writing. He weaves such intricate tales in a few perfectly chosen words...a true poet, as witnessed in such Shindell classics as "The Next Best Western" and "A Summer Wind, A Cotton Dress", that it is little wonder that Richard Shindell's work has become a staple on other's recordings, most notably Joan Baez, whose covers of "Reunion Hill" and "Fishing" truly bring out the genius of the work. On "COURIER", Richard Shindell is blessed with some fine back up musicians and singers, including John Putnam on guitar, Denny McDermott on drums, Lincoln Schleifer on bass, and the ethereal Lucy Kaplansky lending her lilting country folk voice as a perfect foil to Shindell's powerful tones. There are no missteps on this recording...only brilliant writing in the true folk tradition, presented in a straight-on manner that is certain to please.
Captures Richard Live!.......2005-11-28
Most songs are quite brilliant. "Courier," "Transit," "Reunion Hill," and "Ballad of Mary Magdalen," are the best. Even a couple of trucker songs in there done very well, like "Next Best Western." This CD gives one an excellent feel for what a live show is like.
If you get a chance, read his bio on the [...] He has quite an interesting history.
He was going to be a priest, but apparently found songwriting more interesting and more "his calling." He is still a very spiritual man and it shows through in his intelligently crafted music.
Check this out "Laid Back" folks!.......2005-03-29
This is a really clean, tight nit live performance by Mr. Shindell. A couple of the tracks sound somewhat familiar but it's overall variety and tone is really nice. A real asset for a late night run down the interstate. Good stuff I must say!!!
Shindell's best work to date .......2005-01-11
I loved Richard Shindell in the "Cry Cry Cry" project with Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, and the cover of his "Reunion Hill" as done by Joan Baez is as magnificent and stirring as anything you'll hear. But I've found his voice slightly nasal for my tastes, and the recordings (even his solo performances) a bit dry compared with his always stellar songwriting.
Until this.
I listen to this album when I want to feel life deeply. It's a live album without chatter between songs, which really works for me, his voice and songwriting meeting in blissful marriage. The Civil War ballad "Arrowhead" thoughtfully explores the "glamour" of war vs. its reality; the relationship song "Are You Happy Now?" is poignant AND fall-down funny; "The Ballad of Mary Magdalen" has special longing from the male voice as compared with the Cry Cry Cry version. Nice to hear Lucy backing him him up on some of the tracks. And special notice to the spiritual, surrealistic revenge fantasy "Transit," which always gives me chills (in an uplifting way).
Tasteful covers of "Willin'" and "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" round out this altogether spectacular offering.
Richard WHO?.......2004-12-17
Why are all the great artists of my time so obscure that when you mention them most people don't know who you're talking about? I guess we just have to look at who just got re-elected President to see the lack of judgment of the American public. The all DO know who Jessica Simpson is though.
This is a magnificent CD from beginning to end. Shindell's songs are brilliant, and his vocals are passionate and moving. "The Next Best Western," "Reunion Hill" and "The Ballad of Mary Magdalen" are probably the most intensely PERFECT songs on this CD, but it's difficult to say that anything on this Cd is a "stand-out." Every song is a "stand-out."

Customer Reviews:
The Lee Boys - Sacred Steel rocks again!.......2006-09-01
Bottom line: These guys ROCK! And Say Yes! should be another fantastic addition to anyone's growing collection of Sacred Steel music. I was introduced to Sacred Steel with a chance listening of The Word a few years back (still one of my faves) and now have 7 or 8 Sacred Steel records and they never fail to disappoint - Say Yes! included. If you're like me, you'd buy this one for the stellar steel guitar work found on all Sacred Steel recordings - but then you'd stay for the complex rhythms (pay attention to the bass playing alone!) that chug with the intensity of a freight train on an out-of-control downhill run.
While the Lee Boys could be technically classified as 'gospel', they (mostly) convey their univeral spiritual message through music rather than words so it appeals to everyone, leaving the spiritual interpretation up to listeners like me. And I find that the sheer life-giving, life-affirming, positive energetic frenzied power of the Lee Boys (and the emotional depth of the more contemplative Amazing Grace - a Sacred Steel standard) makes this record worth having. And while one might also call this Christian Rock, I certainly view it as much more rock than Christian. As a lifelong fan of the Southern Rock of the Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, and now Derek Trucks, North Mississippi All-Stars and the Drive-by Truckers, this music slides comfortably right onto the Southern Rock train - so it's not surprising that the Lee Boys have performed on tour with all of the above. In fact, anyone nurtured on a seemingly long-faded, blues-rock tradition will find the music of the Lee Boys like a refreshing drink from a newly re-flowing well.
On the downside, 'Say Yes' doesn't add a lot to the overall Sacred Steel repertoire; several tracks are well-known 'standards' to those who have a growing collection of Sacred Steel records. One curious addition here is Happy and You Know It, that while cetainly not your kindergartner's version, nonetheless seems more curious to me than original. Also, the vocals on this one are a bit weaker than, for example, recordings by the Campbell Brothers, but I doubt if many folks pick up Sacred Steel recordings for the vocals anyway and the playing here does not disappoint. Overall, this record is an essential for all Sacred Steel fans and anyone who loves good time, feel good, upbeat, rock-n-roll played - you might say - solidly 'in the key of life'. Rock on Lee Boys and Rock on Sacred Steel!
Great Sacred Steel.......2005-10-17
These boys bring down the house. I saw them live in Seattle, and believe me their album does them justice. This genre of music is much like the Campbell brothers and Robbert Randolph. You won't be disappointed.
Lively, impassioned gospel music.......2005-03-31
When the Arhoolie Records label released the first "Sacred Steel" collection in 1997, they uncovered one of the few last untapped sources of regional music in America, an enclave of Southern churches built around an exhuberant musical style where the congregants sang ecstatically while a steel guitar wildly improvised, driving them all to greater heights. The album was a big success for Arhoolie and had since spawned several follow-up albums.
This latest entry in the "Sacred Steel" series features a six-piece family band from Florida pursuing the romping, stomping, exhuberant, ecstatic frenzy of the style. If you like the original "SACRED STEEL" collection, you'll definitely dig this disc as well.

This 1966 Atlantic album is one of the best soul records of the 1960s! Soul star Wilson Pickett's second album, it includes the hits "Land Of 1000 Dances," "634-5789," "In The Midnight Hour" and "Ninety-Nine And A Half (Won't Do)."
Album Description

Wilson Pickett's highest charting hit 'Land Of 1000 Dances' is joined by the R&B classics '634-5789' and 'In The Midnight Hour'. Collectables. 2002.
Customer Reviews:
My trip into the Past.......2006-03-01
This was one of my favorite 8-tracks as a teenager. It takes me right back to that time in my life
Re-issue of Pickett Classic Could Use More TLC.......2004-08-01
Wilson Pickett's 1965 debut album, "In The Midnight Hour" covered in 12 tracks the various styles and settings the soul giant explored on numerous singles (for several small labels) during the first half of the decade, finally finding his mien, climaxing at Stax with the title triumph. "The Exciting" is the followup, and without question more consistant in overall sound and approach, covering sessions recorded at Stax and Fame Studios during 1965 - 66. Despite a needless re-run of "Midnight Hour," (same track in the same mix) the set is classic Pickett: funky, blues- and gospel-influenced, aggressive and intense. It is often forgotten that Pickett wrote much of his own material, and more than half of this set features Pickett's name credited as songwriter.
The main problem with this 2002 reissue is Collectables' indifferent treatment of a true 1960s gem: the front cover is reproduced, but that's it - no annotation or liner notes, let alone remastering credit, and the cover isn't even part of a booklet: what would normally be page 3 is a coupon for the label's catalog. This cheesiness extends to the remastering, utterly different from the Rhino remasters of a decade ago. The album sounds overly bright, harsh, metallic, lacking in the warmth inherent in the music. Too bad--I hope someone (Sundazed?for a revealing contrast investigate their Lee Dorsey remasters!) revisits the Pickett catalog soon and gives it the respect it deserves!
Maybe his best?.......2004-05-23
If you could only own one Wilson Pickett record, this might be the one to get. And if you can own more than one, you certainly ought to have this one. Not so much because of the break-out hits, which are available elsewhere, but because of the less familiar tracks. If you love Wilson Pickett's singing for the things that make it unique, you should pick this up just for the sake of the astonishing "It's All Over." All over indeed; there's just nothing left after this.

Rarely does an album disappoint on so many levels.......2007-06-02
Let me start right out and give Sawyer his due...he is a great Uke player.
Now let's look at the album length...33 minutes on a CD is exactly like buying a vinyl album and discovering it only has grooves on one side of it...I felt ripped off right away.
Next let me say that another entirely too predictable rendition of The Sloop John B adds nothing to the album, nor does the sort of awful vocal rendering.
I was wondering just who he paid to produce this album and I think therein lies the problem. It is self produced. A Uke player he is...a producer he is not. And Jake Shimabukuru he sure is not, either.
Fantastic CD.......2006-10-07
Having read the other reviews, the only thing I can add is that this musician is way above any pigeon holing. He is comfortable in any genre. I normally don't care for country or bluegrass, but Sawyer's stuff is just so much fun. It's obvious that he is really enjoying making the music. The uke can do anything it's bigger cousin, the guitar, can do with the right hands guiding it. Please, if you love life enhancing and joyous music, buy this CD. Mr Sawyer, when will the next uke CD be out? I want it.
This is a MUST-HAVE CD!.......2004-09-23
For anyone who has preconceptions about the limitations or range of the ukulele (and who hasn't), prepare to be enlightened! In his first (to my knowledge) CD release, Dan (Soybean) Sawyer takes the once-thought-humble four-stringed instrument through such a wide range of musical styles, from a kind of Celtic ukulele-Bluegrass ("Fleas in the Grass"), to a VERY funky (and I mean that in a good way) rendition of "Comin' Home Baby", in which he really takes his uke through the paces, and completely confounds any presuppositions about the instrument's scope or boundaries. What is truly remarkable about this CD, (in addition to Dan's undeniable chops as a player), is his breadth as an arranger. From the light-footed Dixieland-style "Sheik of Araby", through waltz, blues, rag, noir, to a ghostly rendition of "Wreck of the Sloop John B.", It's clear that Dan isn't easily confined by genre, nor does he take himself too seriously to stop him from seasoning the mix with hints of a musical sense of humor sprinkled tastefully throughout. It's to the ukulele's credit that Mr. Sawyer, an accomplished guitar player, has chosen this diminutive, but surprisingly dynamic and versatile instrument for his inaugural CD release. Uke of Ages immediately became not just my favorite ukulele CD, but one of my most-played CD's, period. Here's hoping there's plenty more where this came from!
A LANDMARK UKULELE CD. .......2004-08-08
Over the years I have listened to many ukulele recordings, many of which have been very good, some of which have been - to say the least - dire, but none of which have been of a truly top quality professional standard, until now.
From the first track it becomes quickly apparent that Dan Sawyer is a truly talented professional musician, and as the CD progresses he cleverly uses his skills to provide the listener with not only a tremendously varied selection of tracks of the highest quality, but also musicianship of the highest order. He takes ukulele playing to another level with apparent ease, both to himself by his beautifully smooth but technically advanced playing, and to the listener - who is left thirsting for more!
A fabulous CD, and one which will raise the profile of this talented musician within the world of professional music as well as within the world of fans the ukulele.
Uke Of Ages Swings & Grooves.......2004-08-06
Dan Sawyer's Uke Of Ages is a beautifully conceived, arranged and performed collection of eclectic songs for this unique instrument. The selections, of various styles, have kept me entertained over and over. The swinging Sheik, the grooving Sloop John B, Coming Home, the lyrical When You Wish Upon A Star, and his fine vocal style make this a winner for me! It's a one-of-a-kind. Five stars!

Music From Other Lifetimes.......2007-07-28
I have been listening to Louis Hardin since 1974 when I was simultaneously introduced to MOONDOG and ALL GOOD MEN by Beaver & Krause - I think I must have used up all of my musical luck because nothing (including The Beatles, who are right up there next to God) has since resonated in me the way these two albums have. Hardin's unabashed musical honesty can be found but in two places, children and geniuses, and I think there must be a lot of both in Hardin. Each composition takes you on a different journey, if the listener has the courage to jump aboard; I always close my eyes, to be closer to the way the music was composed. I am particularly fond of his first album MOONDOG for a lot of reasons, but mostly I think because it was my introduction to a composer who has yet to meet his match, even within himself. As times change (and they inevitably will), other of his works will come to the fore and take their rightful place among the few that will always rise above all the rest.

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

highly infectious blues! good time party, excellent talents!.......2007-07-24
I dont really think people should mention SNL because this has absolutely nothing to do with it! this is a jammin rockin blues cd, great remakes of great classics done by 2 guys who you can tell know their music. akroyd/belushi are really great at this, not like some celebs who try to dabble in music as a side thing, when i put this cd in there is no way i can stop without listening to the entire thing, its a good time guaranteed everytime!!!!!!!
3 words: Don't Be Silly.......2006-06-23
Don't waste your precious time on Earth listening to these guys recycling great old tunes.
Seek the originals, or at least, the definitive early versions.
To wit:
One listen to Have Love Will Travel by THE SONICS and you'll be muttering, BELUSHI WHO?
This has been a public service announcement by the Better Living Through Good Music Council.
somewhat original.......2004-12-24
I've always got a kick out of the blues brothers and I would recommend this cd to both snl fans and lovers of classic r&b/blues & rock......Having read some of the other reviews, I would like to point out a fallacy. This is NOT mostly original. There are some original tunes but over half are cover versions. In fact, nine of the thirteen songs are covers. I listed them below with the original recording artists-
Have Love, Will Travel-Richard Berry (of Louie Loiue fame)
Dig Myself A Hole-Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup
Time Won't Let Me-The Outsiders
Polk Salad Annie-Tony Joe White
300 Pounds Of Joy-Howlin Wolf
All She Wants To Do Is Rock-Wynonie Harris
Greenbacks-Ray Charles
Swinging Party-Lowell Fulsom
Driving Wheel-Roosevelt Sykes
Aykroyd & Belushi never tried to take credit for songs performed as the Blues Brothers and I don't think they would do so now.
True Identities Revealed.......2004-07-17
For 20+ years, Dan Aykroyd (an avid blues fan) has been performing the music he loved under the persona of Elwood Blues, one half of the now legendary "Blues Brothers" mystique. Thanks to the movies, it's been hard for Aykroyd to shed those glasses and hat and simply perform the music he loves AS Dan Aykroyd.
This album finally gives him the chance to perform as himself. Although teamed with one-time "Blues Brothers" singing mate, Jim Belushi (filling the shoes of Aykroyd's late partner, John Belushi), don't expect this to be another blues tribute album. For the first time, these two men (who have definitely blossomed as singers in their own right) have recorded a straight-forward studio album of modern blues songs, the majority of which are originals.
There is no gimmick on this album, simply two men singing, backed by a talented band (none of which were involved in the original Blues Brothers Band, by the way). As stated in other reviews, this is NOT a Blues Brothers recording. It IS a great blues project, however.
Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd are wonderful performers.......2004-03-08
I have gone to two of their CD signings and I got to met Dan Aykroyd. Jim, I met at a According To Jim taping. Songs from this CD was played on ATJ. The first season was "Cadillac Man", next season was "Have Love Will Travel" and "Can't Get Out Of It," and final this season they did "300 Pounds of Joy" and "Time Won't Let Me." Since I have it I been playing it over and over. I am a big fan of both of them, and also I love the Blues Brothers. They also do a wonderful Blues Brothers show. Any fan should add this to their collection, I have and its great music. I have Jim's other CD called 36-22-36 and it's also a great one. Both CD's I recommend. Great Blues music.

The quartet does an excellent job of setting the mood for whatever you are doing. It's music you can talk over and yet it is stimulating just to lay back and listen. Can't miss with this CD.

Amazon.com essential recording
In the summer of 1955, a brash, eccentric, and awesomely gifted 22-year-old pianist swept the didactic cobwebs off this monumental opus, and a star was born. For listeners weaned on romantic Bach stylings of Fischer, Casals, and Landowska, the effect was like stepping into an ice cold shower. Glenn Gould's agile, independent hands and hair-trigger rhythm ignited Bach's virtuosic writing with insight and irreverence, sprucing up the counterpoint with crisp articulation, perky accents, and jaw-dropping tempos. This debut recording is the best-known and arguably the finest of Gould's commercial discs. Buy it and hear why. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Out of this world.......2007-06-24
The first record of this monumental work I listened to was Aime van de Viele's harpsichord one. But Gould's style is a complete league of its own, like Michelangelo or Gaudi, one simply cannot classify him. The textures he is able to express, the independent voices he is able to arise from the keyboard, and the breathtaking coolness he displays is completely non Earthling. Bravo Mr. Gould.

BACH TRUELY IS BACK. This is a wonderful musiscal masterpiece. I suggest you bie this item 10 fold. YES 10 cds. The only bad part of this cd is his name, johann SEBASTIAN bach, SEBASTIAN! SEBASTIAN! What is he the fish from the lil mermaid another great buy. Whatever this is great c-SEBASTIAN come on. come on change your name SEBASTIAN. I m SEBASTIAN look at me i play music. *gosh*. This is my 1st review and i m not sure what to stay. Its a 9000 star cd. 9000 stars that al-SEBASTIAN-most the 10,000 stars. I also suggest some soothing soaps and candles to smell while listening to this music. Maybe even a lil foot rub. They have machines that rub your feet now. I no longer have to pay countless dollars on my wife so she will rub them. My feet kind of smell so its the only way to get the rubbed until this machine. Well buy this and fall in love with music of a better less pop sort. great gift for all ocassions and people and all reasons. A++++++++-+ :-(o)
Gould reconsidered and so should we.......2004-10-20
Gould's '55 recording of the Goldberg variations was a challenging statement from a very young man. Perhaps it needed to be played this way, at least once, or perhaps Gould needed to play it this way at that time.
He thought better of it and re-recorded the work in '82 and it is this last interpretation that will stand the test of time. It is an interpretation that is much closer to the accepted sound, but how beautiful it is! Bach doesn't need eccentric rhythms and tempi to gain attention and it turned out that neither did Gould. You can still hear his vocalise (love it or loathe it - I love it), but the passion, depth and strength of the later work overshadows his earlier effort and nearly everyone else's efforts too. Hear them both and then decide for yourself
RIchard Maycock
The Best of Gould's Bach.......2004-09-13
Yes, there is some (not much) audible tape hiss to this recording; yes, Gould can be heard singing along with himself (but that is part of the attraction and charm), but what of it?
This is a totally astounding recording, and much better sonically than subsequent transfers, which in attempting to filter out the hiss and Gould's humming, succeeded only in attenuating frequencies to the point where a very flat, nasal, but uniform sound was achieved. Gould's sonority was spare to begin with; in this case leaner is meaner, but not better.
Musically, there is nothing quite like this performance of the Goldberg Variations. Gould eschews the grace and patrician dignity of Wanda Landsowska and the deep spirituality of Maria Yudina (whose version on the Great Pianists of the 20th Century series is worth getting, if you can find it) for something that is every bit as daring as it is dazzling.
Bringing a super-abundant technique to bear on his Bach, Gould does not so much explore these pieces as penetrate them with extremes of tempi and dynamics. The result is a something quite unlike any other recording of Bach's keyboard music extant. It pricks up your ears and forces you to pay attention. That attention is generously rewarded by what may be the most thoroughly spellbinding recording of these pieces you are likely to hear.
Gould and Bach Make for A Great Musical Moment.......2003-10-29
This performance is truly awe-inspiring. Anyone familiar with Gould will know what to expect with the mighty, graceful, challenging Goldberg Variations in his capable hands. If you enjoy listening to Bach you really must purchase this album.
If you are not familiar with this music or performer then GET familiar with them. The music itself is quite beautiful with a series of variations on a basic harmonic progression (series of chords essentially). However, the endless invention Bach displays in each brilliant section is masterful. The famous "black pearl" variation near the end is quite dark and contrasts greatly with the other pieces. This is very fine keyboard music.
Glenn Gould performs Bach's keyboard music on the piano. Most of these works are generally accepted to have been written for performance on harpsichord or clavichord because of the prominence of those instruments in Bach's day. However, it would be easy to argue that Bach would have no problem with their performance on ANY instrument as transcription, the process of arranging music for an instrument or voice different from the original, was widely practiced in Bach's day.
Gould soars through these pieces at a pace some find too hectic. I would rather that they were somewhat slower but it does not spoil my listening experience. I do not believe I've heard another pianist effectively give fair play to each voice in Bach's standard contrapuntal texture in the same way Gould did. My only concern is with the recording quality. These variations were recorded nearly 50 years ago. Without this knowledge, one could guess closely based on the tape noise. I knock of a star for this but still strongly urge any Bach fan or classical piano fan to pick this one. The cd has been bargain-priced for some time. Take advantage of that fact.
