A hot pop-radio item in the early and middle '90s, Jon Secada makes a bid to return to his previous multiplatinum status with Better Part of Me. Led by "Stop," a catchy if somewhat bland single that appears in both English and Spanish, the album carries on in the vein of Secada's past work, melding dramatic but not overdone vocals with Latin-lite elements (the acoustic guitar plucking of "Love's About to Change My Mind" and the salsa-meets-surf blend of "Papi") and production touches that are sure to garner the disc play time in a variety of dance-floor settings. While the material is an unsurprisingly mixed bag, the best of it will appeal to Ricky and Marc fans who are ready to (re-)embrace another heartthrob. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
One of the most underated singers.......2005-09-06
Jon Secada is brilliant. It's a shame that more people don't know that. I love this cd. The four best songs are, Stop, Speak to the Wind, Better Part of Me and my absolute favourite is Love's About to Change My Mind. I can't understand why he's not been a bigger artist. There is good latin routed sounds on this album and there's a good mix of fast and slow songs. I know you'll love this cd. I do. I wish he'd bring out another english cd.
For anyone that loves good music.......2004-06-06
This album is really good and has Jon's smooth and commanding vocals on it. The Dance-Pop songs like "Papi" and the hit single "Stop" are really good. He really shines on the ballads such as "Break My Walls", "Lost Inside of You",etc., one see why one likes him so much. The album pretty stylish and really good overall. Don't sleep on this CD anyone, this quality music here!
This "Better" Is Far From His Best.......2001-06-06
It's such a shame to see the trajectory with which Jon Secada's once promising career has taken. His last album, probably his best, all but bombed underneath the massive lack of marketing, and this album has met a similar fate, though deservedly so. This is by far his weakest effort, full of sappy adult contemporary ballads that not even his great voice can save. The record moves at a snail's pace, with the occasional uptempo number thrown in. Overall, a wasted effort from someone clearly wasting his vast talent.
Jon Secada Rules!!.......2001-04-18
I loved this CD! Jon has a very nice voice. My favorite song on this album was track number 5. "There's no sunshine any more." I didn't like the song "Papi" that much, but other than that, all the songs rocked! I love you Jon!
A Better Part of Jon? Not really........2000-09-22
I have to start by saying that I am a big fan of Jon Secada. His voice is one of the best out there, and he knows how to really deliver a song. However, none of the material on this CD comes close to the magic found in past hits such as "If You Go," "Mental Picture," "Do You Believe In Us," and "Too Late, Too Soon."
The only exception to this is the title track "Better Part of Me." I was blown away and pleasantly surprised that Jon decided to take his sound into a different territory: dance music. Better Part of Me is an excellent song, with some nice lyrical depth and a haunting chorus that will send shivers up your spine when the last note is reached. I repeated this one song over and over. The CD should have had more moments like this (but sadly didn't). With a few nice remixes, Better Part of Me could reach the summit of the dance charts. Speaking of remixes, it is strange that Sony opted to leave off the best remixes to "Stop" that permeated dance clubs for the past few months. My advice, find the dance remixes to "Stop" (they're wonderful) and wait for the remixes of Better Part of Me. Get your act together Jon so that Ricky Martin will be forced to sing back-up for you.

Customer Reviews:
A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26
Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.
Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.
Still, it's a keeper.
Excellent. The best of this style........1999-02-15
All I can say is listen to the Trumpet solo on goldfinger. The best

Smooth and synthy r&b.......2002-05-04
Clifford Coulter was the keyboard player for Bill Withers when he released this solo LP. Clifford's voice is a smooth falsetto that will remind the listener of George Duke. His synth inspired arrangments are rich and full. In my opinion this cd should still be in release stateside. It does not have a dated sound, although the music is twenty two years old. It is definitely worth the extra change if you are into seventies and early eighties soul.

AWESOME.......2006-11-11
I got this for my grand daughter and decided to open it un and listen it to it before I sent it to her. I loved it so much that I kept this copy for myself and bought another one for her. I also bought one to give as a baby shower gift! The songs and music on these CD's are just so nice! I find them VERY relaxing and peaceful. I think this should be a must for every baby. My grand daughter loves it. It immediately calms down a fussy baby. You can't put a price on that!
Calming and Soothing for your little love.......2005-05-19
I love this CD collection. My son loves to cuddle and listen to soothing and dulcet tones of the author reading the story. By the second track he is getting drowsy and by 5th one, the eyes are closed. It's the only CD that keeps him entertained till he falls asleep in the crib. The other CD's are great at stopping cranky moods. I don't know what it is about this collection but it's just made for little ears!

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27
Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.
She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.
Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.
This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.

Album Description
In January 2002, Los Angeles area roots and country stalwart Rick Shea and the "phenomenally talented" fiddler and singer Brantley Kearns started work on a project they had discussed between themselves for three or four years. They decided to record a collection of older songs, some reworked traditional melodies, songs by California folk icons Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin and a few of Rick and Brantley's own understated originals. The album is based loosely on the connection between the music and traditions of North Carolina where Brantley grew up and the more contemporary folk and country music of California that they both have spent the better part of their lives playing. The result is a great new disk entitled "Trouble and Me". It is named after the Buck Owens classic written by Harlan Howard and given a new interpretation by Rick and Brantley. The combination of Brantley`s eclectic fiddle playing and suberb singing and Rick's rock solid guitar work and deep expressive vocals is a sure winner for upstart Tres Pescadores Records.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best alt.country albums of 2002.......2003-01-14
A delicious, acoustic-based set of well chosen old-timey and old-school country tunes, ranging from dimly-recalled gems such as Jim Ringer's "Rachel," Mary McCaslin's "San Bernadino Waltz," Harlan Howard's "Trouble and Me," and the gentle hobo anthem "Loafer's Glory." Fiddler Brantley Kearns has one of those great, gruff, grizzled-sounding voices that I love to hear, calling to mind folks like Larry Hosford and U. Utah Phillips. This is an excellent, thoroughly enjoyable album, one that would be easy to miss out on, since indie artists have such a tough time with distribution these days. Dave Alvin, whose band both these guys play in, produced this disc, with a light, unobstrusive touch. Fans of the relaxed style of old 1970s-era alt.country will appreciate this disc: I say snap it up while you still have the chance!
Unmitigated joy and unbeatable toe-tapping.......2002-06-09
Wow. I have seen these two gentlemen perform numerous times with Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men and know how talented they are. Still, I was not prepared for how terrific this album would be. Rick's low-key yet expressive delivery is perfect for the folkier selections here, while Brantley's voice is ideal for the more old timey songs. The instrumental backing, the arrangements, the sound... they are all hard to beat. If you liked the recent Jim Lauderdale/Ralph Stanley CD, I think it's a cinch that you'll like this as well.
