Not even Dionne Warwick and her mind-reading friends could have predicted that, over the course of two CDs, Destiny's Child would become one of the most successful girl groups on the planet. But successful this Houston trio is, and their sophomore CD shows why. Yes, the lineup changes as often as lead singer Beyoncé's hairstyle, but fun, disposable pop/R&B needn't be rooted in permanence, and DC is mad fun and mad catchy to boot. With the assistance of hitmakers Shek'spere and Kandi Burruss, Destiny's Child trade in effervescent, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, 'you-go-girl, kick-him-to-the-curb' anthems. The Writing's on the Wall is loaded with tracks like "Bills, Bills, Bills," which are suitable both for dancing and as topics on the Ricki Lake Show. The percolating "Bug A Boo" is irresistible, as is the sassy "So Good." To their credit, the girls can slow the pace down, and on the sultry "Temptation" they get to work their considerable chops to nice effect. But as sales and chart figures have shown, Destiny's Child are at their best when they are laying down the law to some trifling man, and/or working their own groove thang. Work it they do on this somewhat formulaic but ultimately irresistible effort. --Amy Linden

Stardom For Beyonce Was Born .......2007-03-09
What can I say about this CD is that the album is excellent. There really isn't anything bad I can say about this is that I wish Beyonce could've shared the mic a little more with the other members, and maybe slow down on the male-bashing. In all honesty, they do need it at times if the show trifling behavior. The standout tracks would be "Say My Name", "Hey Ladies", "Temptations", "Now That Your Gone", and "Bills, Bills, Bills". This will forever be a classic and DC's best album. "Survivor was a horrible follow-up.

Destination Stardome!.......2006-11-06
Few People would have thought that the band with the quite modest debut would be able to make such a great second album and eventually become one of the most succesful girl-groups of all time. "The Writing's on the Wall" would have countless of hits and the album itself would eventually sell 12 million copies and spend 99 consecutive weeks on the Billboard album charts (that's about 2 years). With new producers, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins and Missy Elliott among others, the sound would also change and they would find their true identity. There would be some ballads, but the hitsingles would be uptempo songs with female attitute, something that contributed to their rise of fame. Unfortunately there would also be changes in the lineup, LeToya and LaTavia who were both childhood friends with Beyonce and Kelly felt they were maltreated by manager Matthew Knowles (Beyonce's Father) and left the band, they appeared on the recording but not in the videos. Farrah Franklin and Michelle Williams joined instead, but Franklin's visit would be shortlived also. The album however is very strong, uptempo's like "Bills Bills Bills" "Bug A Boo" "Jumpin' Jumpin" and "Say My Name" were all big hits and with that Destiny's Child both had good critital acclaim and a great fan base. Album songs like uptempo "So Good" and slow pace/ballads "Confession" and "Temptation" are not bad either, towards the end there's a few too many songs though, 12 songs instead of 16 would have been better. The end result is good, Destiny's Child had got superstatus with a own sound and the album was more even the their debut, their upcoming 2 albums would also be good before a split-up was inevitable. 4 stars.
This album was their destiny!.......2006-10-21
Beyonce and company created a classic album with `Writings on the Wall', arguably the best Destiny's Child album period. With hit after hit, it was this album that made Destiny's Child a household name. Sure, `No, no, no' was great, but can you remember any other track off their ill-fated debut? I can't, but I can sure remember just about every track off this album. Actually just today (don't tell my wife this is so embarrassing) but I was driving to lunch when I heard `Bug A Boo' come on the radio (probably my favorite Destiny's Child song ever) and I just started singing with Beyonce, every word flooding back into my mind. So freaking catchy! Anyways, the album is great, from hit club bangers like `Jumpin, Jumpin' and `Bills, Bills, Bills' to classic slow jams like `Stay' and `Temptation' (sultry) and then my personal favorites `Bug A Boo' and probably their biggest hit `Say My Name' Destiny's Child will forever be remembered for this brilliant sophomore album. It's too bad that Michelle wasn't a part of this since I really like her talent...it's just that Destiny's Child will never be able to reach the greatness they experienced with this album.
Destiny's Child will leave you speechless.........2006-09-07
Beyonce, Letoya, Kelly, and Latavia grabbed the music industry in a chokehold and squeezed the air out with this solid sophomore album. This was the last album we saw with the "original" memebers of Destiny's Child (today just Kelly, Michelle, and Beyonce) and redefined 'girl groups' in R&B forever.
This album was primarily based on the do's and don't of relationships. These women covered everything from cheating, to paying bills, bugging your mate to death, jumpin' off in the club, giving into temptation, confessions on infidelity, and so much more. There was so much substance to the album that it put Destiny's Child on the map, unfortunately we saw roster changes for 8 months straight (but that didn't stop their reign, it only made them stronger....hence "Survivor"..)
Standout tracks: Confessions, Temptation, So Good, If You Leave Her, Say My Name, and Hey Ladies. Phenomenal work!

Another Great Christian Female Vocalist.......2007-04-14
Christian music, in the early part of the new millennium, found itself overrun with Jill P.'s: Jill Paquette, Jill Parr, and Jill Phillips. Phillips and Paquette have similar styles: kind of a folk pop.
I enjoy this type of music, and thus I highly recommend it. Phillips is very good at creating good hooks for her song; great lyrics.
My favorite tracks are "Wrecking Ball", "Grace And Peace", "Still Is My Soul", "Wisdom", "The Way Of The Fire", "Hanging On", and "Sacred".
Beautiful music.......2006-11-03
I love this album... I listen to contemporary Christian and Easy Listening all day. I added this to my collection. She has a wonderful voice and I get to hear praises at the same time. My favorite is "Sacred." Strong messages in her songs.....
Another great effort from a maturing Christian artist.......2005-03-16
Jill Phillip's third album showcases a talent that should be more widely known throughout the CCM scene. She and her husband, Andy Gullahorn are writing some of the best lyrics in contemporary music today. Her style is accessible, but never trite; the music and lyrics are both challenging and pleasing to the ear.
As in her first album (self-titled) she never hesitates to be honest with the listener. With the song title "Buried Alive" challenging listeners on her first album, "Wrecking Ball" will do the same on this CD. But effortlessly, Phillips turns to the quiter side of spirituality with "Even Still", and "Still is My Soul".
This is an artist who connects with her listeners by singing what it means to be an "everyday Christian"; not knowing all of the answers, wanting more from her relationship with God, and bringing us along for the ride.
Christian Music's Best Kept Secret.......2004-05-24
I've never heard of Jill Phillips until i was passing by ( in my local christian store) one of her cds. I'm always jacked up for new promising talents in christian music so i decided to give the cd a shot. The vocals, the lyrics, the melodies were so engaging and at times, I just wanted to linguer on the lyrics. The album has such a comforting feeling; I often felt she was spilling her heart out right in front of me.
But Jill Phillips delivers more than just comfort it's complete honesty. Rather a preached message of " submit yourself to God" and live by a letter law. I see other christian acts constantly preaching about the " do that's" rather preach about Jesus's love and mercy. Jill broke that mold and opened up a new window for people to see CCM music in another way. Thank you Jill.
The Must-Have Contemporary Christian Album- Period!.......2003-08-10
This album has such an intense amount of depth and attainable Christian insight. In a world where there are so many artists there that appear to be speaking in toungues - JILL PHILLIPS has the gift of speaking to your heart and soul, and interlaces such common themes, as loss, trust, faith, love, and most of all hope- with out cramming ANY cheesiness down your throat.
Her lyrics are poetic in nature, and on the audio canvas- she paints a tapestry of 'the everyman' that doesnt have all the answers, and makes mistakes- but ultimately knows where the road is and does his or her best to stay close to that road.
The instrumentation is Grammy- solid. From the strings, to the lilting guitar tracks- you can hear the sweat and tears that went into making this album.
Kudos to Matt Stanfield- of PLUMB fame- for producing such a musical gem. No stone was left unturned.
Beautiful sentiments, engaging lyrics, soothing-yet powerhouse vocals, and most of all- a prevailing message of 'Grace and Peace to you through our Lord Jesus!'
Highly, HIGHLY Reccomended.

Album Description
Digitally remastered two CD set from the late '60s/early '70s Scottish rockers featuring their very rare original Power of The Picts LP and Middle Earth label single plus a bevy of unreleased tracks and rarities. Liner notes include an interview with band's leader Jake Scott. Scottish Heavy Rock band The Writing On The Wall made it big on the underground Rock scene in the late '60s through a highly dramatic stage act. The Middle Earth club launched a label with this maniacal Rock band as lead off act, releasing a single and LP in 1969. Both items today are rare, and highly collectable, holding their worth in the Price Guides. These items form Disc One of this Power of the Picts double CD collection, its title repeating the title of the only LP. The rest of Disc Two contains the best of the other recordings made during 1971-1973 , including two stand out rockers in 'Man Of Renown' and 'Bellyful of Rock' ,recorded for a Scottish TV show . Ork. 2007.

scots band give it welly.......2007-03-08
Writing on the Wall came to London after several successful years in Scotland as the Jury.Power of the Picts showed a big change in their style. A genuine move to Phycedelic/power material. Some of the lyrics are showing their age but the music behind the singer, Linny Patterson is first class with great work from Bill Scott, the organ player. Get it in the car and give it welly.Willy Finlayson, who played guitar on most tracks, left the band for a while but showed excellent form for the time.
James Waugh
Forgotten gem of early British prog rock.......2003-03-09
For every Yes, ELP, Genesis, King Crimson, and the likes, there are like several times more prog rock bands that slipped through the cracks and became almost completely ignored. Scotland's Writing on the Wall is that one example. The Power of the Picts was released in 1969 on a small label called Middle Earth Records (the label only had something like five albums released in its very short life), so you know right the original LP isn't easy to come by. The band consisted of vocalist Linnie Paterson, guitarist Willy Finlayson, bassist Jake Scott, drummer Jimmy Hush, and keyboardist Bill Scott. Given that the album was released in 1969, it sounds like many other prog rock bands of the time that hadn't quite abandoned their hard rock, blues, and psychedelic roots. Sometimes the music is a bit like a much heavier Procol Harum, or of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (at times Linnie Paterson can sound just like Brown, like on "Aries", but a lot of times he don't remind me of any particular vocalist). The highlights of this album, without a doubt include "Mrs. Cooper's Pie", "Aries", and "Bogeyman". "Aries" features some spoken dialog with a uniquely Scottish accent, with some space rock tendencies (especially in the organ work), heavy metal guitar riffs, and a cool jazzy solo. "Shadow of Man" is, like King Crimson's "The Devil's Triangle", another song that's partially borrowed from Holst's The Planets, only of course, the organ is used instead of the Mellotron. "Hills of Dream" is a more mellower piece and sounds more like typical early '70s British prog rock (ie, not much of a bluesy hard rock feel as you get throughout most of the album). The CD reissue also contains two bonus cuts, "Child on Crossing" and "Lucifer's Corpus". Both of these were originally released as a single in 1969 on the same label The Power of the Picts was released on, Middle Earth. In fact the single was the very first release on that label, and it basically tied people over until the band completed the album. Anyway, two excellent cuts that are very much in the same vein as the album itself, probably the only reason it never made it on to the original LP was due to lack of space. While "Mrs. Cooper's Pie", "Aries" and "Bogeyman" are clearly the album's best songs, the rest don't quite reach the heights of those songs, but none of them are bad. Worthwhile album if you like early British prog rock.
