Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Album Description

Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.

The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.

These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.

Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.

The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:

1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.

2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.

3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.

Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!

One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24

My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!

I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.

Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28

If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.

A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19

I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

I had no idea what Slack Key Guitar was until finally took the wrapper off this CD and played it. Love this CD. Very relaxing. Great backgound music-can let it play all day. Brings back the memories of our visit to Hawaii.

I judge all my other slack key cds against this one..........2000-06-02

Bought it on May 17. Ended up buying 11 (and counting) other slack key music cds. But still my favorite overall. I can't sing, but do want to learn to play slack key, so this instrumental cd of solo (no other instrument) slack key inspires me. You will not go wrong buying this one!

The mellow performances match my personality, and bring to mind images of balmy breezes and swaying trees.

I've been looking for another instrumental cd of solo slack key performances, but have yet to find one that matches this one...except maybe Ozzie Kotani's, and Ledward Kaapana's live CD.

Finally - lullabies BY & ABOUT Daddies.......2003-03-06

Most lullabies are sung by moms and are about moms. What about Daddies ? I found this in tape form about three years ago & my daughter (4) & son (21 months) both love it. Love it so much that it is wearing out swiftly. My daughter can sing most of the songs; my son is working on it. It's great to play when Daddy is on an extended trip, or even when he can't make it home before bedtime. A great way to remind kids of how Daddy loves them.

After 5 children (now ages 18 years to 4 months) I feel qualified to say this is my favorite lullaby CD ever. I bought it for my husband and we use it to get our two youngest children to bed each night. The remakes of the oldies (Daddy's Home, Devoted) are superb, but what we love most are the beautiful melodies and lyrics of the original songs. At the end of the CD are instrumentals and my husband puts those on and sings the lyrics to our babies each night. If you want a good cry, read the dedication. The co-writer of the songs died after this CD and this is his final love song to his daughter!

A WONDERFUL ALBUM.......1999-01-15

This is a beautiful album, gorgeous, sweet, and poignant. Diane Levine indicates in the liner notes that she and her late husband David wished to show that "dads can be just as nurturing as moms" and was inspired by his relationship to his daughter. The very first time I played it my seven year-old daughter fell asleep in my arms as she said "Dad, this is beautiful." Among the many beautiful songs "Saving your sleepies," "No sweeter music," and "Butterflies and Turtles" are particularly poetic. The music on this album is accessible to adults and children alike. The mix and the technical quality of this recording are both superb. What a generous and profound legacy for a man who must have been a wonderful father.

I found this album soon after my daughter was born. I was looking for a good recording of Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen, and listened to clips from several different cd's. As soon as I heard this rendition, I knew I could stop looking. These are beautifully unaffected presentations of classic songs. They neither dress up nor dumb down the material. Rather, the melodies and warm, smooth voice take center stage. Adults can take pleasure in this cd even after repeated plays, and my baby was soothed every time!

Russell Thompkins Jr. can sing so well! His solo CD shows how versatile he can be. Loved his version of April Fools (True Love Has Found Us) by Burt Bacharach and Hal Davis. Dionne Warwick (First), Russell Thompkins, Jr. (Better).

A True Artist Who Stands the Test of Time.......2007-07-06

Russell Thompkins, Jr. brings to the table a rare, magical voice that stands the test of time. Is this his best material ever -- No. Is this nevertheless a superb CD with excellent songs -- Yes. He is true artist, and for his fans, this is a terrific CD. My fervent hope is that he records again and again.

It takes more than a great voice to make a CD........2006-09-27

After having heard Russell Thompkins, Jr. sing as a New Stylistic in the PBS DVD, Soul Party Live," I got curious as to how his single CD sounded. Well, his voice is in top form, but this effort is very unmusical. It didn't take long for me to realize that the only instruments in this CD is a synthesizer, and drum machine. As such, the music sounds artificial and synthetic. Moreover, the material is simply lacking and is mediocre at best. His attempt to re-make the stellar hit, "People Make the World Go Round," is a disaster. This effort proved to me that you need more than a great voice to make a CD. You also need good material and real instruments like horns, violins, a real piano, drums and an orchestra if you can swing it. This is a far cry from the Philly days with backup bands like the legendary MFSB. While Russell still has potential, it doesn't come through here.

An astonishing collection of ballads that would leave you wanting for more.His voice is so smooth and silky beautiful iam so in love with this album iam his greatest fan.A must have for any serious Russell Thomkins Jr fan.

Great CD Wonderfull Ballads.......2004-09-30

I was so glad to find that a cd exist for Russell Thompkins Jr, and I must say the cd I bought is excellant. The songs are all true and soft. Russells voice and talent for good ballads has not dwindled one bit. With so much going on in the music industry today its great to see true singers still singing. Its been out for 2 years and I recommend it to others . Go Russell may u bless us with another cd or a re-union cd with The Stylistics. macqdor@yahoo.com

Love this CD.......2006-10-19

I usually don't write reviews for products. But I love the CD so much that I have to write about it. My son (2 yrd) loves it too. It has familiar songs with intereting twists. I usually play kids music in the car for my son, and I got sick of all those songs over and over again. With Mr David's songs, my whole family never got bored. My son would also imitate the sounds Mr David makes in the CD. highly recommend.

Xumantra (shoo-mantra), cosmic voyagers.......2001-05-30

I have not read much about the members of Xumantra or their artistic aims, but fortunately, their music pretty much seems to speak for itself. This is not so much an album as it is a headspace- created by gongs, bells, bowls, and other metallic implements used in meditation and ritual in the east- which will serve to relax and center you, no matter what your beliefs may be. Buy this album, buy some incense (I recommend Nag Champa), turn out the lights, and just EXIST in the music, if you have the courage. This is not party music, and it is not 'easy listening'.. it is simply sculpted sound with magnificent power and scope. And yet it is extremely minimalistic. A person conditioned by commercial radio and television might call it boring, but the fact that Xumantra doesn't call to mind the flashing lights and flickering images of our modern world only adds to their appeal. If you like this, you may also want to look into the works of Steve Roach, Robert Rich, percussionists like Jim McGrath and tuvan singers like Jim Cole (Colescence).

Music has always been a part of Maestro Jerard's life. Born in 1946, his affinity for music was recognized at an early age. Encouraged to explore his talent, he performed in musical theater and opera. His efforts were distinguished with the lead role of Amahl in Carlo Menotti's opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors. When graduated from high school Jerard entered the University of California at Los Angeles where he furthered his interest in music with the study of musical composition. In his third year Jerard departed the university to join the United States Air Force. But he carried his love of music with him. During his four year enlistment he devoted his free time to the classical guitar, learning basic techniques and discovering the nuances of the instrument. Soon after leaving military service Jerard was married. He started a career, became a daddy and so began a life of commitment. His principal resolution, to be a good and loving husband and father, defined the parameters of his life. As his career progressed he fulfilled that promise. In 1983 he became a mortgage loan officer at a bank, a position he holds today. As his life took shape Jerard never strayed far from the music he loved. The interest he maintained in the classical guitar evolved into a passion. Through intense study and practice, combined with a talent to arrange, compose and transcribe music, the Maestro has created a collection of work which includes some of the world s great music, much of which had never before been transcribed for the guitar. The Maestro produced his first collection on compact disc in 1996, a second followed in 1999 and his most recent in 2002. He has crafted, arranged and performed these tunes using his abilities to evoke the full range and scope of the instrument. Each unique collection offers the listener a uniquely lush, beautiful and soothing sound.

Perfect Wedding Ceremony Music.......2007-01-06

This CD was exactly what we were looking for when we were searching for wedding ceremony music. We wanted something simple for our outdoor wedding ceremony last Fall and this fit the bill perfectly. The music is excellent and very well played by Maestro Jerard. We used 3 songs from the 2nd disc for our ceremony which included seating of the grandparents, parents, wedding party, etc.

If you're looking for pretty guitar music for your ceremony then we'd highly recommend this set. It included 2 discs and over 120 minutes of music.

I was really satisfied with the music on this CD. Being a fan of the guitar, this music put a real special touch on my wedding day. (My wife loved it too.) Highly recommended!
