Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30 Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04 This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17 If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Betcha Never thought this album would be this good!!!!!!.......2006-03-20 Successfully branching into jazz, Vanessa finds her self in fine form. Shes at her best with the cool and sassy "Betcha Never" written by Baby face. The title song "The sweetest days" is really a sweet song, and the hip grammy nominated "The way that you love" is a heart throb. This is actually the first Vanessa Williams album that I bought and I instantly became a fan. Keep up the good work.
A Master Class In Making an Album.......2005-02-25 Vanessa Williams' name conjures up a few different images. Miss America, timeless beauty, pop chanteuse, broadway diva or respected actress. Vanessa has worn so many hats that it doesn't come as a surprise that she has explored a myriad of musical styles in her recording career. Although her first two albums were paint by numbers R&B/pop collections that did pretty well on the charts, they did show some signs that the Divine Miss W had more to offer (including the brilliant rendition of What Can I Tell My Heart from the Comfort Zone album). The Sweetest Days if probably the closest Vanessa has come to showing the many different sides of her personality and the range of her talent. This collection is classy, urbane and extremely listenable. Vanessa never oversings or overreaches and truly found her "comfort zone". The standouts on this collection are the two Babyface compostions "You Can't Run" and Betcha Never. These songs both use a brazillian jazz theme and choose instrumentation that allows Vanessa to ride the groove instead of being overpowered by it. Vanessa also tackles You Don't Have To Say You're Sorry (by the criminally underated Patti Austin) with great success. Other great numbers are Sting's Sister Moon, Higher Ground (redone by Barbara Streisand in 1998) and one of Vanessa's greatest vocal performances, Constantly. A superb collection that I highly recommend.
EXQUISITE!!!!!.......2004-09-02 I love Vannessa's music I enjoy all of her albums she sings very well. On this album she shows her love for Jazz on this album. She shows her Jazz talent shows that she can sing Jazz as well as R&B and pop music. This woman is a great singer she sings very well I really like this album. If you enjoy Jazz and if you are a fan of Vanessa's music then you would definitely enjoy this album She does a great job !!!!!!
Good, but lacking rhythm........2004-08-25 This album is good, but it lacks rhythm. I have tried to listen to it, but I get lost and confused somewhere on the 3rd or 4th song.

Some of the finest Etta James ever-HUGE!!!.......1999-03-02 If Chess doesn't reissue this one, it's a crying shame. Everyone who hears my copy wants one and I have to commisserate but they can't have it. Countless people have tried to find it. "Let's Burn Down the Cornfield" (randy newman) is an absolute classic. The darkly soulfull "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "Tell Mama" are fabulous and the finisher, "Gonna have some fun tonight" is recorded with a party background to jump start your evening or keep the rockin' rollin'. Recording quality is somewhat mixed, but generally excellent given the quality of the times(67-75)and places Muscle Shoals,Alabama to L.A. Track down a copy and YELL at Chess.

A brilliant and very influential singer.......2003-12-27 Jackie Wilson, who style of music was at the R+B end of the rock'n'roll spectrum, had a long string of hits in America during the fifties and sixties but it was only in the eighties that he made any real impact in Britain (a few years after he died) following the use of one of his songs in a TV commercial.
UK fans will recognize Reet petite (a number one UK hit) and two other major UK hits, I get the sweetest feeling and Your love has lifted me higher and higher (a song that has been covered by many other singers including Dolly Parton and Rita Coolidge). All these songs had been huge American hits for Jackie in the fifties and sixties.
Among Jackie's other American hits, this collection includes Lonely teardrops, That's why I love you so, Night, To be loved, I'll be satisfied, Whispers getting louder and A woman a lover a friend.
This compilation also includes Jackie's distinctive cover of Danny Boy as well as four tracks featuring Count Basie, two featuring LaVern Baker and three gospel duets with Linda Hopkins.
It is amazing that Jackie made little impact in the UK during his lifetime but, helped by the Commodores' tribute song (Nightshift) and some TV commercials, he has gained a measure of posthumous recognition. It is ironic that this UK compilation is the best single-CD collection of his music.

Enjoyable and soothing.......2000-06-15 It was a great CD but I think some of the lyrics were kind of girlie. They sometimes seem too sensitive but yet, sensitivity is good. I liked this CD but it could have had more of a variety of emotions.

It's in English . . . sort of.......2005-08-30 If you are looking for a minimally adequate "Don Pasquale," here it is. I take it on faith that the (adequate) singers are warbling in English--although long passages might just as well be in Serbo-Croatian or Old Icelandic.
"Don Pasquale" is, nevertheless, a true comic and melodic gem that rises above even the most ham-handed, mush-mouthed performance, hence the three stars.

Another feast for Handelians.......2003-12-25 Here's another astonishing piece for all Handelians. Many of Handel's great pieces have sadly been neglected - just like many of Richard Strauss' operas which have only recently received attention from people like Botstein, Korsten and Sinopoli (deceased). Thankfully, Gardiner and his team took the trouble to record this astonishing masterpiece. I simply love this piece - Saul!! The Monteverdi choir is the best in the world - listen to their stunning virtuosity here. Thank you, Gardiner!!
Excellent music.......2003-09-14 Saul is one of those lesser known works by Handel. I certainly prefer Solomon, the Messiah or Israel in Egypt. Nevertheless, there is plenty of glorious music in Saul. The Monteverdi sings with their customary virtuosity. Casting of solo parts is superb. A bit on the pricey side but this is an investment that will yield rich dividends over a long period of time. Instead of listening to the Messiah all the time

Intriguing, listenable, original music!.......2003-08-31 The early Howells works and the Stevens Mass for Double Choir are fresh, original pieces that deserve a much wider hearing than they receive. Howells' "Mass in the Dorian Mode" is very striking in its use of modal and polyphonic writing. Nunc Dimmitis, another piece on the CD, echos without copying Vaughn Williams' "Mass in G Minor." The Finzi Singers handle this complex music very well. Though once or twice the CD sounds a little bright, overall, it is beautifully recorded.
