This is a real sleeper of an album, literally. Smooth-jazz musicians--including Peter White, Dave Koz, Norman Brown, David Benoit, and others--play music here to put babies to sleep. Fans of New Age music, specifically what came out of the Pacific Northwest in the '80s, may find many of these 14 tracks reminiscent of that period. Long-time listeners of smooth-jazz radio may be reminded of the kind of ethereal, spacey music that was played in the early days of the format. Many of the songs are as obvious as Brian Culbertson's somnambulating "Brahms' Lullaby" and Koz's "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," but some are inspired choices with creative arrangements and strong performances. Koz and his brother Jeff shine on the Beatles' title tune and the other Lennon/McCartney chestnut, "Blackbird." Brown's take on James Taylor's "You Can Close Your Eyes" is also moving, while not straying from the stillness of the concept. Perhaps the standout track is the superb performance of vocalist John Stoddart on Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely." --Mark Ruffin

I took a very long time deciding which lullaby CD that I wanted to purchase for my baby. I bought this while I was pregnant and it turns out that this CD soothes the whole family. I highly recommend Golden Slumbers: A Father's Lullaby for everyone.

The sleeping baby on daddy's shoulder makes me smile every time I see it. It's worth buying the CD just to get that picture.

These lullabies were created by musicians for their new borns. It's sort of gentle, sweet jazz, easy to listen to while falling asleep. I listen to it every night. I also bought the Beatles Lullaby CD and the Baby Einstein Lullabys. (insomnia) Golden Slumbers is the best of them all.

This is a great lullabye CD -- terrific tunes done beautifully. It is a great way to get baby to calm down for naps or for the night. We play it virtually every night for our 5 month old. We've bought other lullabye CDs, but this one is the best we've tried. I listen to it myself after baby has gone to sleep!

Album 2 for the Aussie transplant and former member of the Ranch kicks harder than his debut and fulfills Keith Urban's goal of capturing the elusive "band feel." The solid arrangements are particularly well tailored to Darryl Brown's ruptured romance ballad "You Think of Me" and the swampy "You Look Good in My Shirt." Urban catches fire lyrically on the moving "Song for Dad" and "What About Me," a cautionary view of selflessness he cowrote with Rodney Crowell. That, unfortunately, is as good as it gets. While the Ranch enjoyed a cult following, Urban, who should bring an idiosyncratic side to his music, is clearly out to play Nashville's game. Proof? A preponderance of bland material aimed at pleasing radio consultants and programmers. Consider his original "You're Not Alone Tonight," replete with harmonies used on countless country hits of recent past. True, a banjo occasionally surfaces throughout the album. Nonetheless, reviving David Dunda's 1976 Top 20 pop hit "Jeans On" reveals much about Urban's true musical roots. --Rich Kienzle

i received the product very soon after i had purchased it and it was sealed nicely and securily. Best thing is that getting the cd from the U.S and me living in Australia, i was a bit worried that i might have trouble hearing it. Nothing to worry about....i play it often and love the quality of it. I keep it in the kitchen and play it when i'm home, and i copied it and have it in my car where i spend a lot of time. So as you can see...i love keith's music and love this cd. It's happy and quick and then takes a breather with a softer ballad.

Always a classic.......2007-06-09

I finally had to replace my old copy of this. I love it! Beastie Boys' classic album mixes their "new style" lyrics (one-liners as I like to think of them) with all the classic party/dance tracks: No Sleep 'til Brooklyn, Fight for Your Right to Party, and Brass Monkey, not to mention "GIRLS". What fun it is, they obviously had so much fun with this album.

The Beginning of the Beastie Boys' Dynasty.......2007-06-05

License to Ill--

Formerly a punk-rock outfit called the Young & the Useless, New Yorkers Mike D, MCA and King Ad-Rock hooked up with Def Jam founder Rick Rubin in the mid-1980's to create a hip-hop masterpiece. Released in the fall of 1986, License to Ill took both the hip-hop world and mainstream pop culture by storm. Though this was their debut LP, the three MC's traded verses like veterans. Hip-hop rhythm tracks were combined with guitar licks for one of the first rap/rock fusion efforts, sowing seeds for the sub-genre's late 90's resurgence in the likes of Limp Bizkit and Rage Against the Machine.

Lyrically, the Beasties are basically college-age party animals throughout the album, telling wild stories about getting kicked out of White Castle, get-togethers stocked with Budweiser, and related tales of cheerful, hedonistic mayhem. In interviews, band members admitted to having a Schoolly-D fixation at the time, and so there are also some casual gun references here and there. "Slow and Low" covers an unreleased Run-DMC song, with the unforgettable line "White Castle fries only come in one size.." "Rhymin' & Stealin'" is pre-gangster rap pirate fantasy, where the Boys vow to send sucker MC's "to Davy Jones' locker.." "No Sleep `til Brooklyn" has a great guitar contribution by Slayer's Kerry King, as the Boys vow to keep the party going "eight days a week.."; the now-legendary "Paul Revere" is a cowboy fantasy (co-written with Run DMC) where the Beasties play desperadoes on the frontier, set to a reverse-drum track rhythm: "MCA was with it, and he's my ace, so I grab the piano player and I punched him in the face; piano player's out, the music stopped; his boy had beef, and he got dropped.."

The album's signature song was the top-10 pop smash "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right". The rocker is almost out of place amidst all the straightforward hip-hop, but it's just as well that it was the album's closer. The Beasties expanded the cultural diversity of rap as well as expanding its cultural acceptance worldwide.

As of 2007, the LP's 20th anniversary has already passed; a deluxe re-release is in order; it should include any unreleased songs (such as the early "Rock Hard" EP; also, bootleg releases have included rare songs like "Scenario", "I'm Down" and an alternate take of "Fight for Your Right"), as well as a DVD version of the now-rare VHS home video compilation.

The Joke Is..........2007-05-08

In response to Rickey Wright's editorial review (this guy's an editor and didn't see this?)...

The joke, Mr. Wright, is not them crashing their jet into the side of a mountain and surviving, but rather what the image turns into when you unfold the album cover and hold it length-wise with the tail-end up. It's the image of a 'joint' being mashed out (like a cigarette in an ashtray). So I think the genius behind it works, making the obvious - unobvious.

Also, the call letters on the rear of the plane (3MTA3) actually spell 'EAT ME' when viewed in reverse - which is what is usually done when you're smokin' a fatty and 'Jake' is on ya.

As for the album itself - CLASSIC! True Beastie Boy gold!

A near-excellent album.......2007-03-09

Who didn't listen to the Beastie Boys back in the '80's? Their crossover appeal to rap and rock fans made the group one of the biggest hits during that era. The album was indicative of their unique style of rap, along with their penchant for including heavy rock sounds/backgrounds into their music. Although some thought that this album was a bit commercialized, it didn't keep it from becoming one of the most popular releases during that time. "Brass Monkey" is a memorable track that almost every Beastie fan can sing along to, and "Fight For Your Right" almost became an anthem for party-crazed teens in the '80's. "Time To Get Ill" was one of my favorite songs on this album, since it displayed skilled Dj'ing and catchy backdrop beats. Lyrics were also easy to memorize, which always helps when you feel like rappin' along with the track being played in your car. "Hold It Now, Hit It" is still one of the most sampled tracks in today's rap songs, and its catchy beat and rhythm allows for regular play in many listener's stereos. "She's Crafty" and "The New Style" were less-known hits, but still allows for fans to enjoy, as beats and sounds are similar to other hits... but, just different enough to keep the album from being boring. With their unique style and memorable lyrics, who wouldn't want to buy this album for the right price?

Man of La Mancha, the show that introduced "The Impossible Dream" to the world (and lounge singers everywhere), was the hit of the 1965 Broadway season. Richard Kiley is magnificent in his career-defining performance as the deluded wannabe knight Don Quixote. His leading lad Joan Diener sings the role of the kitchen wench Aldonza with just the right balance of dignity and vulgarity. Irving Jacobson turns in a fine comic performance as the Don's faithful squire, Sancho Panza. The score, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion, was revolutionary in its time. The orchestra had no violins--just brass, woodwinds, percussion, and flamenco guitars. Man of La Mancha is one of Broadway's most inspiring musicals and it well deserves its high reputation. --Michael Simmons

I've never seen this show on stage and my first exposure to the music was the Sony CD Man of La Mancha featuring Placido Domingo, Pandy Patankin, and Julia Migenes-Johnson. Despite lackluster reviews of the disk, I enjoy it, and when I saw this version at a second hand book/music store, I decided check it out too. My initial impression was that the Sony version was the better disk but decided to compare both versions by setting up a playlist in Media Player, playing tracks from both version back-to-back.

After that test, I have to agree with the reviews here that Richard Kiley is the superior Don Quixote. Domingo's voice is, of course wonderful, but Kiley acts the role better on the CD and Domingo's accent is a major distraction.

In the role of Aldonza - no contest. Julia Mingenes-Johnson's singing and performance on the Sony version is far superior to Joan Diener's. I didn't have to hear the tracks back-to-back to realize that. Ms. Diener's performance just grated on my ears from the beginning.

Bucking the crowd, I prefer Mandy Patankin's Sancho (Sony version) to Irving Jacobson's. I may be biased, having had more exposure to the Sony version, but Patankin seemed to be trying to inject a bit more feeling into the character. Jacobson, singing in an annoying, scratchy voice, came across almost like a cartoon trying to fit in among live characters. It seems like most people either like Patankin or hate him. Guess I'm one of the former.

The Orchestration does seem brighter/clearer in this version compared to the Sony version, but, in general, the tempo on most tracks seems slower than the same tracks on the Sony version. I preferred the up-tempo, Sony versions of "The Barber Song", "Little Bird, Little Bird", "The Dubbing" and "A Little Gossip".

In Summary: For Kiley's Don Quixote, you'll probably want this version, but for tracks featuring Aldonza (and maybe Sancho) you'll want to check out the Sony version. Since I have both disks, I will probably come up with a mix of my favorite tracks, in general, favoring the Sony disk but substituting the tracks that feature Richard Kiley's Don Quixote where I can.

beautiful music for a haunting story............2007-06-07

I remember reading excerpts from Cervantes' DON QUIXOTE, as a Spanish student, way back in junior high school. The saga of the madman fighting windmills and pursuing his illusions [and delusions] was very sad, but very romantic at the same time. When the musical adaptation, MAN OF LA MANCHA, was brought to the stage in 1965, Richard Kiley (as the title character, Don Quixote) absolutely transfixed the audience with his sensitively heartfelt portrayal of the tragic madman. The plight of Don Quixote, who travels on horseback, with his faithful companion, Sancho Panza (Irving Jacobson), and absolutely lovestruck by kitched wench Aldonza (Joan Denier), is alternately pathetic and profound. Perhaps one of the best known (and most remade) songs in the repertoire from LA MANCHA, is "The Impossible Dream." Richard Kiley really make it his own, here, and after you hear his version, it's hard to listen to others' versions of it. It's just not the same. Though, this story is anything but joyful, the music will glide through your ears and carry you on a surrealistic journey through attempted triumph and (ultimately) tragedy.

Don Quixote.......2006-09-14

Back in High School my band leader, Mr. DeYoung, decided (agianst much opposition from those of us in the band let me tell you) to have us perform select pieces from this musical

I hated the idea. But when we began to play, he even had us watch the musical, I fell in love with the melody. The many songs of a man who believes the best in the world. YOu find that in Dulcinea, The Impossible Dream, etc.

From one maginificently rendered song to another, you can be lost in its melodic elegance.

My favorite song is the initial rendition of 'Little Bird, Little Bird'. It's a soft song, sung as a love ballad. In the musical you discover it's being sung to a local whore by a bunch of randy men. Despite that, I still like it.

This along with others are among the great works of the stage!

After the out-of-nowhere success of Licensed to Ill, the Beasties had to prove they were more than one-album wonders, and they hit it out of the park with this follow-up. The Boys' lyrics are a hysterical deluge of cultural allusion (Ponce De Leon, Sadaharu Oh, and Love Connection's Chuck Woolery all get name-dropped), compressed wordplay, and adenoidal snottiness, but the real stars are the Dust Brothers, whose production is a hip-hop landmark. Their music tracks sound like the history of rock and funk radio boiled down to a pure concentrate--monster jams built out of thousands of unexpected samples (Johnny Cash! The Sweet!). It's a killer party album, kinetic and dense, and it never slows down. --Douglas Wolk

To tell you the truth, I never was too big of a fan of the Beastie Boys. I've always considered them sort of a group that was directly made for people who didn't listen to rap very often. Sort of like the status Eminem has had in recent years. I picked this up after looking at the 5 star average here on Amazon, and seeing that New Musical Express gave it a 9 out of 10. Me, being young and listening to this album, I have to say that it is one of the most brilliant albums that came out in '89.

As many people realized, back in the day you didn't have clear any samples in your music (sort of like EPMD's Strictly Business back in '88). And boy oh boy did they take advantage of it, especially with some of the samples that they used (Ever tried clearing samples in music? See how fun that is.). One of the reviewers said they had used over 400 samples. Damn, thats a lot! But back then, they added their own spin to the samples they used. So at the same time, it was still origonal, and not ripping it off (like a number of songs you hear today).

Now for these guys, they are dope. One of my favorites is "Hey Ladies". That song is awesome. "Johnny Ryall" and "Egg Man" had dope beats and catchy rhymes. Especially the latter song with the dope fast paced beat. "The Sound Of Science" is also a standout track to me. The album has a 15 minute close "B-Boy Bouillabaisse", and it's actually broken down into parts (I'm not sure which part starts). I first thought the song was way too long, but it soon grew on me. Some where after the 10:30 mark, there is a scratched sample of "These Are The Good Times", which sounds perfect.

Paul's Botique was one of the best of '89. Comming off the classic debut Licensed to Ill back three years earlier, there is surely no sophomore jinx here. Just creativity and passion for hip hop. If you're into 80's rap, listen to this, because it's actually one of the best from that decade. Peace.

Love this album. When I first got it, I asked myself "what is this?" The album was so different I had to get used to it. There are so many different new things on here that it just doesn't get old. Great album!!!

Buying this tape after 'Licence' was a true mind bender. At first, no one knew what to make of the sound - frankly, all my friends thought it kinda sucked. Soooooo far ahead of it's time. Took a while, but it took a few listens to realize what a great sound this was/is. Classic.

Sonically brilliant but still overrated.......2007-01-08

Yes, you heard me. And I don't even dislike the Beasties; I enjoy them. I do appreciate them for doing something totally different at the time. That being said, the reviews everyone who's heard it give you would make you believe you were hearing a masterpiece. It's not quite. For one thing, it sounds a bit dated now. Maybe releasing a re-master of this disc wouldn't do too bad. The songs aren't really terrible, but none are actually "best I've ever heard" type songs, which by default would maximize it at a four star rating for me. Unlike the reviewer below me, I actually think "Egg Man" is one of the album's greatest songs, and that sample is one of the things that makes it what it is. That nine-part track at the end is fine but I'm glad they put it at the end because it goes on for a bit too long. Some of the interludes here irritate me as well, including that pointless twangy track.

I'm not saying you shouldn't buy "Paul's Boutique." Just know that what everyone tells you isn't quite always the case. It's not as bad as it was viewed back in the day, but it's also not as good as people are letting you believe it is today. Maybe other records by them are closer to my style. "Check Your Head" blows it out of the water. They've done better and later on this record was improved upon. Albums from DJ Shadow and Beck also show this.

Easily the best Beastie Boys album..........2006-11-22

Hey, what's up? This is my first review. At first I didn't feel it was necessary; Paul's Boutique already has five stars, and deserves every one of them. Still, the quality of this record compelled me to express my thoughts on it, too.

This album is near perfect. The only track I feel is weak (and it's not even that bad) is Egg Man. I didn't dig it at first... but it grew on me, so I'll give it a listen, now, especially for the sampling (as mentioned by another reviewer).

Every single track on the album is linked. I think this adds alot to it, because it's like a non-stop track. Very enjoyable. If you're looking for a great hip-hop album or want to get into the Beastie Boys, definitely cop this album. Solid Gold Hits isn't great, and the anthology isn't worth it. All Beastie Boys albums pale in comparison to this sucker. Get Paul's Boutique.

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

I'm compelled to provide a review. For one reason. Why the f isn't this a five star album? Some reviewers out their need their keyboards revoked. I've been listening to this record on and off for almost 20 years. Each time I get the same old buzz. My old (much loved) Pixies albums don't come close in terms of providing everlasting pleasure.

For those that don't own this, just "do yourself a favour."

BTW - DJ Spooky Trojan Records excursion is a blast....(on the platter as I write)

As eerie as a siren........2007-02-18

You know, I once saw someone say that this shouldn't be considered music, and in one way, that person is right: it's an aural explosion on record, in a way not even an industrial band could execute it. This record came out at a time I was still coloring walls, but even I could connect well with it, it is that good. The record hasn't aged a bit. The first I heard from P.E. was "Fear of a Black Planet" a few years back, and I really enjoyed that one. I got to this and was shocked at how it was EVEN better.

Chuck D. and Flavor Flav have a delivery that can't be missed, and the Bomb Squad use some awesome loops and samples. The 3 or 4 interludes on here are great too, and not even those come off as filler. The lyrics are intellectual social/political message. There's not much quite like this today, in fact that might even be an understatement. Some tracks come off like siren tracks, like listening to songs like "Night of the Living Baseheads" and such. The live samples add to the energy of this record. It is a hip-hop record, but you don't have to be a fan of the genre to enjoy this. The energy could be appreciated by a rock fan, and the instrumental of a track like "Black Steel..." could be appreciated by a jazz fan maybe. It doesn't need to be limited to genres. It's a great record, period. The influence is something that's even been going on through the times, and that doesn't need to be explained or even justified.

It's cheaply priced and an amazing album, even sounding fresh nearly 20 years. It doesn't even need remastering any time soon! That's all the more impressive. There is so little not to like about this record, it is recommended to everyone from me.

Possibly the greatest rap album of all time. The hard rhymer Chuck D. paired with the multi-layered production of Hank Shocklee(Bomb Squad) still packs as potent a punch as when it first dropped. Not to sleep on Flava, the greatest hype man in the business is essential to the final product; I can't imagine this album being as perfect as it is without him.

Peter Gabriel has never been one to stand on tradition. The former Genesis singer bends and hammers fashionable pop forms to his liking (à la his massive MTV-fueled hit "Sledgehammer") or uses the obligatory soundtrack assignment to explore the world music that has been his obsession for decades (as in "Zaar" from Passion). This 16-track anthology explores the width--and, crucially, depth--of Gabriel's rich post-Genesis music, from the post-prog obliquities of "Solsbury Hill" and "Here Comes the Flood" to the African musical and political concerns of the title track (available only on this collection) and the epic "Biko." But what makes the compilation even more compelling is the way it eschews the chronology of its decade-plus body of music, instead weaving and segueing Gabriel's music into a tapestry of compelling mood and color. Great collection of hit but..........2007-03-15

If you are a great fan like me and already have all the cd collection, there's no need for this one. You already have most of it, what is missing is "Shaking the tree"... there is a better version of it on "Secret World Live", a piano version of "Here comes the flood" ... there is a better version on Growing up Live (DVD) what's left is a new mix of "I have the touch" and "Zaar" which is not a memorable song.
Be aware also that some of the songs have been edited to a shorter version.

I would add that the hits are not the best songs of Peter Gabriel, the rest of his material is better. This cd is for completist or for someone who want to own only one cd of the artist (which is a mistake !)

Previously, I reviewed Kate Bush's The Whole Story, which I picked up, used, to take with me on my recent trip to China. The other used CD I picked up for the trip was Peter Gabriel's Shaking the Tree - Sixteen Golden Greats. Released between his albums So (which I own on audiotape) and Us, this greatest hits collection thereby focuses on Gabriel's earlier career, and tries to "spread the love" a little evenly between all his early albums...which means that the over-played hit song "In Your Eyes" is missing here. Also missing are a few great hits from the later album Us, including "Digging in the Dirt" and "Steam" (good thing I own Us already).

What is here are a collection of great songs. New favourites for me: "I Don't Remember", "Games Without Frontiers", and "Family Snapshot".

I'm not particularly interested in going back and picking up all of the Peter Gabriel albums that ever were, so this collection fills my need quite well, giving me an overview of Gabriel's early career.

Most of the tracks on this one "will shake you " all over.......2006-02-06

Peter Gabriel as a soloartist is quality all over. This "greatest hits" collection, gives you most of the best. To kick of with Solsbury Hill (Track 1) is a wise choise. There`s an uplifting mood all trough the song. It`s simple in it`s build up, and easy to humm along to. Track 2 , I dont remember im sorry to say to "experimental" in a way. To much "blip blop" synth sound, spread all over, and has to much hit`s and misses. But hey soon we are back in business again with Sledgehammer Track 3. Gabriel voice is clear, and has a great rythm and syntheseisers to follow it. Track 4 Family Snapshot is a slow song, which doesn`t take of in the right direction. It has a form of "talking singing" which sometimes is annoying to listen to. Track 5 Mercy Street is moody and very relaxable to listen to. Track 6 Shaking the tree, with Youssou N Dour on vocal has an "african touch" over it, with what we can call "ethnic rythm and vocal" which realy fits as an whole all trough. Track 7 Don`t give up, is anyway the best Gabriel song on this CD. To bring in Kate Bush on vocal t take`s this
one "heaven above" when it come`s to uplifting musical soulfood for your mind. Mindfood in other words. Im sure this one has cured some depression`s, in a cold cold world.
Track 8 San Jancinto, we are back in the departments of "weird sounds and blip blop", but it`s an ok listen. Track 9 Here come`s the flood is very moody and relaxable, and give
you some "freeze" down your back. Track 10 Red Rain, has
a certain quality, but it`s to much instrument`s fighting for theire place in a way. But the melody is good, and easy to remember.. Track 11 Games without frontiers, is one of the weak tracks. Easily forgotten, sorry to say. Track 12 Shock the monkey. Hey, that`s a another story. This one kicks in gear on the first note, and get`s better and better until the end.. Track 13 I have the touch, it`s to experimental for my sake. I don`t find the touch on this one. Track 14 Big Time
is ok. Track 15 Zaar is a weird one. Very experimental with i think everything you can find on syntheseisers sound at the end of the eightes. It`s sound`s sometimes like an early computer goes mad. Not my cup of tea. Track 16 Biko, he`s back in the jungle, with good lyrics, but soundwise it does`nt stand out. Anyway most of the tracks on this one will you put you in great mood As an introduction to Peter Gabriel for "newcomers" this one has it all.(most of the time).

Great music but not a great compilation of Peter Gabriel.......2006-01-14

Peter Gabriel is in my humble opinion a monument in the rock scene, from his days in Genesis to his solo work. Gabriel has two compilations out on his solo work, this one and 2003's 2 CD "Hit: The Definitive Peter Gabriel" (which is far from definitive).

"Shaking the Tree" (16 tracks, 77 min.) was originally released in 1990 and is now available in remastered sound. But is it a good compilation? Alas, it is not. That said, there is a lot of great music on here. There are 5 tracks from Gabriel's 1986's commercial breakthrough album "So", but "In Your Eyes", a major hit is not on here. Even more troubling is that there is not a single track from 1978's "Peter Gabriel 2": no "On The Air" and no "D.I.Y.", both hits, as minor they were. (As an aside, PG2 was equally ignored entirely for the 2003 "Hit" compilation. I guess Peter doesn't like that album?) For die-hard Gabriel fans (count me one), the reason to own this is the inclusion of "Shaking the Tree", a "Biko"-like song you can't find anywhere but here, and the new recording of "Here Comes the Flood", as a piano-and-vocals only cover, just great.

It is clear to me that the definitive Peter Gabriel "best of" is still to be released. Both this album and 2003's "Hits" have serious flaws. That said, there is no question there is a lot of great music on here. As to "Shaking the Tree": only for die-hard Gabriel fans.

Rap for Sentient Beings.......2007-04-15

You know the typical gangsta/hardcore listener? A 15-year-old white boy from the 'burbs who wants to be a man but his mom won't let him have a really loud car? The kind who writes reviews like "u got 2 get dis its da shiz"? They'll hate this album.

Now, you know the musically adventurous, intelligent listener who avoids rap because they think it's all gangsta/hardcore? The kind of sentient being who can handle the concept of chords and knows the difference between *your* and *you're*? This is the person you should buy this album for.

Even if you don't think you'll like rap, this is an album worth checking out. It's not the stereotypical inmate-screaming-over-a-background-of-falling-skillets [c]rap everyone's sick of. This is smooth, clever, funny, creative spoken-word music. That's the key; it's *musical.* There are breezy melodic hooks under witty, deft vocals with just enough punch to be classed as rap.

Sure, it's Old School, but Old School's never gotten old, while a lot of the other genres have become derivative, repetitive, and stale. You'll like this CD from the beginning, and you'll keep listening to it, because it's inventive and creative. Whether you're new to rap or a fan looking for something new and interesting, this is a great buy.

Definition Of The Word "Awesome" (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-01-26

De La Soul's (consisting of Posdnuos, Maceo, and Trugoy)1989 debut "3 Feet High And Rising" is considered one of the most important debuts in music history. I have to agree with that statement. Me, this album is nothing but music to have fun while listening to. A lot of their albums are remerable to come across. There is not much I can say here that hasn't already have been said here.

This album has a lot of remerable tracks on here. I would say their biggest one would be "Me Myself And I", and it sounds so fresh today as if I were listening to it back in '89. A lot of their tracks that they made, people thought they were hippies, but that would be addressed throughout this album. Most of their music is just to make you laugh and have fun, like on one of the interludes "Can You Keep A Secret".

This album is completely produced by Prince Paul (one of the most underrated producers). The song "Eye Know" has one of the most fantastic beats that I heard in a while, especially when it comes to me listening to albums from the 80's. "The Magic Number" is also a great beat to enjoy.

And if you purchased this after 2001, you receive a bonus disc. The bonus disc contains eight tracks that were either remixes or pulled off of soundtracks. A great addition towards this album if you ask me.

As for anything to have any problems about, I have only one. I'm kinda mad that the remix of "Buddy" is not on here, nor on the bonus disc. That is a small dissapointment, but I will learn to live with it. Other than that, this is an album that you will enjoy time and time again. De La Soul debut is sort of like party music, but at the same time, make you daydream. This is one album that is highly recommend to any music listener from any genre. I'm not sure if this album is out of print, but if you see it for a reasonable price, go ahead and get it.

De La changed the game and paved the way for ATCQ.......2006-12-25

De La Soul was ill prepared for the success they would achieve on 3 Feet High and Rising. They were immediately tagged hip hop hippies due to their daisy age fascination and found themselves in a public identity crisis. In 2006, groups would love to have that type of exposure no matter what people peg them as. Anyways that's the past. 3 Feet is a classic due to it's unconventional sampling, rhymes and just straight left field approach.

One of hip hop's most original and important albums.......2006-12-12

The Long Island trio De La Soul's debut "3 Feet High and Rising" is one of the most original, different rap albums you will ever hear. It's so creative and humorous and is just so great in so many ways. The album ushered in a new movement of thought in rap music. De La Soul took a very light and humorous approach to hip hop at a time where the angry, hard rappers seemed to be all there was. Posdnous and Trugoy are still truly talented and intelligent MCs, though, and they cover some relevant social topics despite their constant humor. Musically this album is also great, the sampling and horns are so catchy and always keep my head bobbing when I listen to this. This sound would be imitated a lot throughout the nineties, and for good reason. This album was also among the first to do the whole skit/interlude concept on a rap album, with an intro and outro and interludes throughout the disc. There are a lot of short songs here, contributing to the albums 24 song tracklist. Along with Jungle Brothers, this was among the first of the Native Tongues movement, and it was a trendsetter and a pioneer. This album is really funny and has a lot of replay value, it's one of the most original and important rap albums and one I recommend to all.

After the games show-themed intro, the album begins with "The Magic Number," an immensely fun and catchy song that sets the mood well. "Change in Speak" has great horns and a jazzy, funky beat with good raps. "Can U Keep a Secret?" is one of the short songs that I mentioned that is just really funny, it always makes me laugh. "Jenifa Taught Me" tells an awkward story of high school, like always it is well produced and humorous. The excellent "Ghetto Thang" and one of my favorite old school songs ever, "Eye Know," follow. "Eye Know" has a beautiful beat, with an inescapably catchy whistle and instrumental as well as a great hook, the raps are laidback and happy and the song is just great. The short "Take It Off" and "A Little Bit of Soap" precede "Tread Water," a relevant metaphorical track that chronicles conversations the rappers had with animals in the jungle. "Potholes in My Lawn" is more vintage De La, as are "Say No Go" and "Plug Tunin'." "Buddy" introduced A Tribe Called Quest to the world, and "Me Myself and I" is undoubtedly one of hip hop music's finest tracks. The encouraging lyrics are one of a kind, and the horns and chorus are still widely known even almost twenty years later, this track is so catchy and well produced. The album ends with four more tracks that really hold their weight and end the album on a great note, including "This Is a Recording 4 L.I.F.E.," "D.A.I.S.Y. Age," and another mix of "Plug Tunin'."

I think "3 Feet High and Rising" is a classic on the level of some of the east coast's best, and even though today it might be a little dated and often overlooked it's still really fun to listen to. This album showed better than any other that hip hop music could just be plain fun. I recommend it to anyone with taste for older and creative hip hop music, it's a great addition for any collection.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!
