I always knew U2 sucks!!! A friend of mine who is a huge fan of U2 and she kept on pushing me to listen to it and once I listened and I was like WTF is this??? and she kept telling me that U2 are always the best but I knew U2 is horrible!!! I believe she was trying to make me buy all of their albums so she could be able to get it from me for FREE but I am not that dumb!!! I told her we all cant have the SAME taste of music we all are different and we all have our own taste. So sorry friend I rate this 1 STAR!!! and yeah I have a message for U2: get lost!!! you guys are not worth to be a singer!!! You guys are terrible!!! It's hard to believe that UB40 have been around since the early 1980s, but the proof is right here in the 18 tracks on this album. While most famous for their cover songs, UB40 have written a good portion of original material that's excellent. But songs like "Red Red Wine" and a previously unreleased version of the Doors' "Light My Fire" will attract the majority of listeners to this collection. Following in the footsteps of greats like Bob Marley and Burning Spear, this band from Birmingham, England (led by the two sons of folkie Ian Campbell, have helped keep the flame of roots reggae alive with their easy sound. They've even made over rock standards into their reggae template, including Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" (with guest Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders). In their own little way, UB40 have been gnawing away at musical barriers for the last 20 years, and this is an ideal summary of their achievements. --Chris Nickson

This CD does not have the songs that are listed on this site. "Here I Am" and "The Things You Do" aren't on this CD. Beware, the "Red, Red Wine" version is cut short also. Don't buy it unless your really know what it is you're getting.

Fine selection althought ALL UB40 music is great.This CD is a mix of almost all albums from this great band. You will noticed how they mastered their style ( Labor of love II is a good example) Good driving music you will not be bored when you are stucked in traffic anymore with this selection .I love UB40 since "Rat In The Kitchen". Overall I was satisfied, as most of their hits and well known songs are included, but I have to agree with the upset reviewer who complained that some songs were cut short.

"Red Red Wine" was chopped nearly in half, and "Give Me Your Cup" was also either a shortened version, or not the version I was looking for.

UB40 have been a constant within the music scene for almost 3 decades by now. The first 15 years they were constant hit makers with consistent album sales. It seems that after that period, all of a sudden their time as a big selling artist was up as if the public had had enough.

This CD covers that period in a thorough manner. Another version, a double Best of Vol. 1 & 2 CD from the UK does have a more thorough selection of their songs. This one has, however, the main hit songs. With the exception of the remake of Light My Fire, there is not a single song on this collection that is not classic UB40. One could go on and on about which other songs should have been included but then it would have been just as difficult choosing songs being left out instead.

Their music has aged very well and many songs are becoming standard classics, even ones that were standards in other versions. In short, if you like casually UB40, this is the set to buy.

The sound has been re-vamped which can be heard very well on some tracks. Compared to the UK Best of Vol. 1 & 2 version, the bass on Here I Am, which is prominent in the mix, is much more vibrant and the whole sound staging has audibly more depth then on the US version, whilst on Kingston Town the synthesizers are clearer and the slight echo in the singing channel more natural, giving the song more of its special aura. These songs and other newer tracks have an added edge on the US version over the Best of Vol. 1&2 which is in a way analogous to the difference of a brand new LP verses a worn one.

On older tracks the difference is more audible, since the recording technology during the later period is more similar to what is used today. 1 in 10 has a significantly lower and more muddled sound and their first single, Food For Thought, is so vastly different sonic wise it is as if a blanket has been put over the speakers on the Best of Vol. 1&2 version (incidentally, the Left-Right channelling is reverse on the Food For Thought mixes).

To summarize, this is an immaculate collection of the hits of UB40. Sure, I would have like a few extra tracks but keeping to a single CD, this collection is very close to perfect.

If they'd never cut another track after their monster-grooving, No. 1 R&B instrumental, "Pick Up the Pieces," the Average White Band still would have earned an enduring place in the music pantheon--and the Irony Hall of Fame, the latter due to their improbable Scottish roots. After all, they were six soul-smitten musical journeymen hailing from quarters much nearer the Mull of Kintyre than Motown.

But lest anyone mistake that quirk for a marketing shuck, the funk-drenched love of early '70s black music driving every cut on this well-chosen anthology will set matters straight. Indeed, AWB proves imitation isn't just the sincerest form of flattery. In the hands of seasoned and talented musicians, it can be the sweetest form of inspiration, too. The members' early work in cover bands informs songs like the sweaty workout "Cut the Cake" and tuneful, Marvin Gaye-inspired "Queen of My Soul" and "A Love of Your Own." When I first purchased this CD, I was immediately floored by the rhythm chops that AWB is so well known. I am new to the funk/R&B scene myself, and I play guitar. AWB's Pickin' Up the Pieces: The Best of the Average White Band (1974-1980) has more than you could want from AWB and contains their most memorable cuts (Pickin' Up the Pieces, and Cut the Cake, my favorites) that inspire old and new funk players to AWB's rhythms. AWB's horn section as well as their vocals provide lead to the backing rhythm guitar work.

Some of their tunes are more complex than others in terms of guitar rhythms, but that is what makes the CD sparkle, both for the tight and intricate bass and guitar, but the well-versed horns that continually pop out at you from the horn section in rhythm.

There are times when the sax player takes solos, but listen to the backing rhythm and it makes more sense.

Personally, I favor the high-charged funk rhythms instead of the ballads, but the ballads just show another side of AWB's versatility.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and visit some of the 70's best funk and R&B music that even guitarists like me who grew up in that era can enjoy, give the AWB a listen with your media player on "Pickin Up the Pieces" and "Cut the Cake". Two exceptionally organized, well-arranged, and tight guitar, bass, vocals, and horns.

Your answer will be the same as mine if not more appreciative of AWB.

How can the AWB's sound get any fresher?

This excellent remastered collection breathes new life in the classic R&B sound during an era when musicians really mattered. And that is heard in the first cut; the horns and percussion in Pick Up The Pieces groove so hard.

But the band demonstrates their skills on cuts like Person To Person, Work To Do, Cut The Cake and School Boy Crush. Though AWB is still on the road, the live cuts Cloudy & I'm The One gives the listener a taste of how the group sounded on stage back in the day.

The group had such a clean studio sound, which is really brought out in this collection. Though the AWB has several signature songs, there was a lot of quality material recorded from 1974-1980. I cannot recommend a better "best of" package from a group than Pickin' Up The Pieces.

AWB is a very underrated band. Their talent is definitely for the mature R&B fan who enjoys funk. If this description fits you, you will love Pickin' up the Pieces. There were more great songs on the cd than I expected. "Cloudy" and "A Love of Your Own" were THE slow jams when I was in High School. I am so glad to now have this cd in my collection.

I bought this for "A Love Of Your Own" & "Queen of My Soul". After I played it, though, there were so many other good songs I couldn't believe it! I knew a lot of other ones from high school, but even the songs I didn't know were good. These guys really have soul. There are a couple of ballads, a couple of covers and even a disco sounding song. Of course you know "Pick Up The Pieces" but that and "Cut the Cake" are the only instrumentals. I'm really glad I got this CD.

I listened to completely different kinds of music at the time, so I didn't have many memories attached to these songs. The musical quality of the songs is actually suprisingly good, and the mastering has been done well. This is a nice review of hits of the early 1980s. Ten songs per CD isn't much, so there could have been more songs from each year.

This was during Xmas 1984. One lovely girl from Texas brought to Poland (this is where I live) the 10 cassetes pack with "The Best of Billboard - 1984". I still hear this music. Now I can buy a piece of it.

To anyone who was ...teen in 1984: you have to own this one. Don't tell me there is no music you remember from these years. It must be one at least. Remember the first girlfriend. The first kiss maybe? Yes! That's it!.

As should be expected, Steely Dan's four-disc box set isn't like all the other rectangular pop-music retrospectives/tombstones. Not for Messrs. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the typically bloated, ego-jacking crate padded out with childhood recordings, suspect cassette demos, and broken-down session takes, annotated by candid snapshots purloined from some distant relative. Nope, this is simply Dan Mach 1's complete oeuvre, from the craft-conscious pop of Can't Buy a Thrill to the jazzy torpor of Gaucho, laid out chronologically and neatly compressed into four discs, with not even a handful of "bonus" cuts (a live recording of "Bodhisattva," a '71 demo of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" with Flo and Eddie on the side, "Here at the Western World," a Royal Scam outtake, and their obligatory soundtrack cameo, "FM") to color outside the lines. The liner notes are suitably smart, even if they occasionally strain trying to stay astride of B&F's patent sardonicism. For the aspiring Steely Dan completist, a fine place to start. --Jerry McCulley

Without doubt the definitive Steely Dan compilation of all time. Their new music notwithstanding, the depth of music included in this boxed set will transport you back to a nostalgic time when things seemd a bit more well defined. Great songs, great players, a great aquistion for all Steely Dan afficiandos!

I bought a cassette (!) version of this box set back in 1993 when I was a sophomore in college. It was my introduction to Steely Dan (I was too young to remember them when they were originally recording). And I have to say, this may have been one of the single most important purchases of my life. It forever changed the way I listen to music. More than just turning me into a huge Dan fan, Becker and Fagen's music also paved my entry way into the world of jazz, too. I absolutely love their music.

I've since replaced this box set with the remastered versions of the original albums. But for the novice Dan fan who is looking to learn more, this is a great place to begin. As other reviewers have noted, it's unfortunate that the producers of this set had to rearrange the original album order of some of the songs in order to get everything onto four CDs, but that's a minor quibble. I also thought the enclosed booklet was pretty terrific, too. As I said, when I bought this I knew next to nothing about Steely Dan and with nowhere else to turn for information about the band (remember, I bought this in 1993--before the Web), the book served as a good primer for getting me up to speed on who they were and how they came to be.

Great music. Good value for the price.

Five stars is an easy choice here; only in the 1970s could such a group have actually snuck the kinds of things into the charts that they managed to, and somehow prosper and influence others.

I won't rehash the well-explained contents of this box set; instead I'll throw out a few tangential observations. It may not have been quite as obvious at the time, but Steely Dan were one of very, very few successful rock bands to exist apart from really any prevailing movements in the history of rock. One could draw some variably vague connections to jazz, soul, pop, hippie-era rock, California 70s singer-songwriters, or even the kind of ironies that would later fluorish in the best of the post-punk generation (Elvis Costello, XTC, Talking Heads and Pavement were all very much spiritual descendants of Steely Dan, in many ways), but Steely Dan weren't exactly any of those things. But they scrupulously maintained a rather erudite ability to draw selectively from most or all of those things. Music geeks (of the best sort)...that's the expression I'm hunting for.

Becker and Fagen also weren't afraid to really get close to the edge with their sense of irony, or satire: there are any number of songs ("Kid Charlemagne" and "Everything You Did" both spring quickly to mind) aimed at a sort of character who might well be listening to a well-worn copy of 'Royal Scam' whilst the deal goes down, and they also didn't exclude themselves from the critiques, the debaucheries, or the damnations. To be able to do this and actually get away with it is a real indication of brilliance, either as songwriters, or perhaps as social commentators.

In any case, this is great and adventurous music through and through - the textured spaciousness of "Your Gold Teeth I," the cacophonous jazz riffs of "Parker's Band," the keyboard pyrotechnics of "Your Gold Teeth II" (apparently, 2 incomplete snipets of songs rearranged into one complete one), or "Deacon Blues" - a perfect creation, blending a Sinatra-worthy melody with production touches that would rival Pink Floyd (or Radiohead).

Socio-critical sonic architecture at its' finest.

This longbox contains their 1st 7 albums & you won't find rarities or early live stuff(see the Skynyrd's box for instance).
However,it remains an exceptional document of the band's musical intelligence.
With the possible exception of Lou Reed,rarely such songwriting ability has been so perfect,some of the songs the duo penned could be printed as novels,it's a brilliant job indeed...
Add the superior musicianship to those songwriting skills & you get STEELY DAN,the most subtle band the USA produced.

All the stuff here deserves a good 5 stars,i gave only 4 because some unedited or unofficial live stuff would have been greatly appreciated!

I have appreciated the music of Steely Dan for many years but unfortunately never owned any of their music. I received Citizen last March as a gift.I was blown away by this material. It is incredible. The selections cross many musical genres and every one is represented first class. Anyone who appreciates quality music needs to have this 4 CD set in their collection. There will be no regrets...............

Legendary Broadway impresario David Merrick had his last (and longest-running) hit in 1980 with 42nd Street, an adaptation of the 1933 RKO film best known as one of the classic backstage musicals, as well as a vehicle for Busby Berkeley's jaw-dropping choreography. The stage version preserves the film's terrific Harry Warren-Al Dubin songs, including "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," and the title tune, plus ringers "We're in the Money" and "Lullaby of Broadway." Jerry Orbach plays down-and-out director Julian Marsh hoping for a comeback, and Tammy Grimes is the star Dorothy Brock who gives way to ingenue Peggy Sawyer (Wanda Richert). 42nd Street is fun listening (including a herd of tap dancers in the opening auditions), and even if it seems quaint compared to the grittier backstage look taken in A Chorus Line, which debuted five years earlier, the two shows coexisted on Broadway for many years. 42nd Street is also well known for one of Merrick's most infamous stunts: when director Gower Champion died the morning the show opened, Merrick kept the information to himself so he could announce it to a shocked audience and cast after the final curtain call. --David Horiuchi

Maybe I have just been spoiled by the modern musicals, but this classic was boring. half the songs were dancing, and that isnt exactly what I like listening to. A little tap is ok, but not this much. I also like to have a couple ballads in the show, but this one was balladless. Jerry Orbach sounds great, when you get to hear him, but even that isnt very often. Why not get The Fantastics instead? This show just wasnt for me. I would suggest that collectors, and classic lovers, get this one. Other than that, pass it over. Favorite song: "Lullabies of Broadway" (only because Jerry Orbach sings most of it.)

5 out of 5 stars A Great Stage Musical About Stage Musicals.......2005-10-08

42nd Street is an oldie, dating back to the days when Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler played the director and ingenuous wanna-be musical star. In 1980, this version opened on Broadway, with some updated lines and songs added to make it relevant to present-day audiences. It featured a talented ensemble of performers, including stage musical veterans Jerry Orbach and Tammy Grimes. (An interesting sidenote: This was Orbach's last role in musical theater until he provided the voice of Lumiere for Disney in 1990; he also blamed his contract for this show for costing him a stab at a movie career!)

The tale is old and well-traveled to anyone familiar with old films about stage shows: A troupe is assembled, a play thrown together, someone coughs up backing dough, and all seems lost until the misfit saves the show. It's old as dirt and still strangely fresh, appealing to most people's hope for a happy ending. Toss in great songs written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, and dance routines choreographed by the great Gower Champion, and the result is infectiously fun.

The story centers on the efforts of fallen director Julian Marsh to produce a musical during the Depression, no small feat considering that most of society has hit rock-bottom financially. Salvation of a sort comes in the form of faded star Dorothy Brock, who is over the hill but has a rich sugar daddy willing to back a show---provided she's the star. However, auditions have unearthed a sweet young thing with real star potential named Peggy Sawyer, who suffers from terminal klutziness and an ability to get in Julian's way. Nonetheless, he shows her compassion and hires her as an extra. Trouble starts when Dorothy's old flame Pat Denning appears on the scene and Julian fears that her rich boyfriend will yank his support out from under the show. From then on, it's all up in the air as to whether or not the musical will happen.

There's plenty of fun and great song and dance numbers, such as "Go Into Your Dance", "We're In The Money", "Shuffle Off To Buffalo", "42nd Street" and the best one of all, "Lullaby Of Broadway". The singers were perfectly cast for their roles: Jerry Orbach shone as Marsh, Tammy Grimes breathed life into the fading but still proud Dorothy, and newcomer Wanda Reichert was wonderful as the awkward yet talented Peggy; her cracked voice was reminiscent of Ruby Keeler's. In his last live musical role, Orbach had far less to do than in his earlier shows, but his strong voice had lost none of its virility and power to reach the balcony. In a rare video clip shown on TV one night, our children got to see him and the original cast sing and dance to "Lullaby Of Broadway" and were wowed; he and Wanda Reichert dazzled the crowd, right along with the ensemble.

One last piece of stranger-than-fiction stuff: Orbach's first role on Broadway (The Fantasticks was off-Broadway) was as Paul in Carnival, which was choreographed and directed by Gower Champion; so was his last. And it was on opening night of 42nd Street that the infamous David Merrick, who also produced both musicals, came out and announced to a stunned audience and cast that Champion had just died a few hours earlier of a fatal illness. To Jerry Orbach, the whole episode was awful, a sordid trick pulled by Merrick to garner ticket sales for the show, as if the musical didn't have enough merit to pull in an audience. Listen to this CD and realize that no publicity stunts were needed---42nd Street is terrific, and remains fresh even now. Enjoy!

Adapted from a 1930's motion picture, "42nd Street" (starring Jerry Orbach and Tammy Grimes) is a choreographer's dream musical.
Besides the great dancing, however, the musical comedy contains several classic tunes, including:

While the music is a bit dated for my taste, these are classic songs & are great seen within the context of the show.

This recording session was tense! Producer of the show, David Merrick locked horns with album producer Thomas Z. Shepard and the session ground to a halt. Eventually order was restored, Shepard left and Jay David Saks took over. Happily, the resulting album plays very well.

From the thunderous taps of the opening "Audition" number right through the glorious "Lullaby of Broadway" number the score is just one gem after another. Jerry Orbach is the hard-boiled director, desperate to have one more hit. Tammy Grimes is his over-the-hill "star" and Wanda Richert as the young innocent who goes on for the leading lady at the last minute, saving the show and becoming a star herself. The leads, the suporting performers, the orchestra are all first rate here.

A few curiosities: The songs "Shadow Waltz" and "Young and Healthy" are reversed from their stage order as are "Dames" and "We're in the Money." Also, the song "I Know Now" was left off the recording. On the other had a lengthy dance interlude for the title number is included but since the story is acted out in dance, it's not clear to to those who have never seen the show exactly what is going on in this segment.

Fortunately, the synopsis helps the listener follow the plot of the show itself. The Harry Warren songs are pretty much self-explanatory: "Gettin' Out of Town"; "Go Into Your Dance", "Sunny Side to Every Situation" etc. Also, there are some short bits of dialogue here and there.

All in all, a fine document of an entertaining, old-fashioned muscal comedy.

If ever there were a bigger-than-life American figure whose biography seemed custom-written for the Broadway musical stage, it was the legendary showman Phineas T. Barnum. That 1980 musical arrived during one of the Great White Way's most serious, pre-Webbermania doldrums, but its innovative circus-ring staging and buoyant songs helped point the way to the future, garnering 10 Tony Award nominations, winning star Jim Dale the Best Actor Tony for his riveting, tour-de-force performance in the title role and showcasing co-star Glenn Close on her way to Hollywood stardom.

The show's buoyant songs include romantic drama ("The Colors of My Life," "I Like Your Style"), shameless hucksterism (Dale's verbal gymnastics on "Museum Song," a tune whose brisk syllabic gymnastics one-ups even Gilbert and Sullivan), and infectious crowd-pleasers: "Come Follow the Band" and "Join the Circus." Yes the score for this musical is beautiful. So much going on in each one, perfect for that circus atmosphere. Each instrument has character which is so lost in modern musicals. Now my thing with the lyrics is not that they're bad. They get rather dulled at points, and I just tuned them out. When Jim Dale was singing I listened just to hear him, but otherwise, take them or leave them. It Seems to be show you need to see not hear. Favorite song: "There Is a Sucker Born Ev'ry Minute"

I LOVE this Broadway musical! I find myself humming the tunes all day. There is only one cut I am not crazy about, and all the rest are lively, fun, interesting, musically appealing and joyful. The music is terrific and the words are throught provoking and entertaining. I am so very glad I bought this.

I saw this production with Jim Dale and Glenn Close when I was 14 years old at the St James Theater in NY, with my drama club. It was my first BIG show ever, and to this day rates in the top 5 productions I have seen.

Enjoyed so much that even as a young teen I bought (and still own) the album, even though I have nothing to play it on. Still, 26 years later here I am, very surprised and pleased to find this CD version available, needless to say I'm buying it.

It was interesting to read some of the comments here. The only song I didn't care for was the operetta "Swedish Nightingale" song. If the creator was trying to get us to hate the "other woman", just by using that song he succeeded.

Yes PLEASE ignore the London version. It simply does not compare. I can still see clearly in my mind, Jim Dale on the tightrope, Glenn Close with her bricks, and the whitefaced clown who entertained the audience prior to the opening act. You had to be there, but even if you weren't, there are enough upbeat and happy songs here to get you tapping your toes, and even a few that might make you a bit introspective.

And hey, learning the "Museum Song" by heart is a great way to spend time in a traffic jam.

This 1980 Cy Coleman musical, starring the terrific Jim Dale and Glen Close, has its moments, but doesn't compare with his best efforts: "Sweet Charity", "City Of Angels", "The Life" or "The Will Rogers Follies".

I love everything about these songs. I wasn't much of a circus showtune person until I watched my classmates reenact it in our new auditorium. I love everything about Phineus Taylor Barnum's history. I play in the pit for the high school show, and it's the most fun music to play. I love it. I definitely recommend this to anybody.

Exactly what was Pink Floyd's The Wall? Rock opera? Concept album? Performance art? Mere entertainment? While the truth may lie in a combination of all of the above, during the band's tour of 1980-81, The Wall was a bona fide spectacle. More than anything, Is There Anybody Out There? captures the volume, the bombast, and the grandeur of these famed performances with remarkable accuracy. Meticulously recorded, these concerts are astonishingly faithful to the band's studio versions and flow out of the speakers with practiced authority and absolutely fantastic sound. That said, there are few new revelations to be gained from hearing The Wall live that can't be gleaned from the studio version. Some moments do have an additional spark, however. "Run Like Hell" is launched with blistering intensity, and the first notes of "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" will surely raise a shiver. The release also includes two tracks ("What Shall We Do Now," "The Last Few Bricks") left off the original release due to space constraints. Essential for Floyd fanatics as well as those wishing to hear just how terrific a live concert can sound. --S. Duda

I got this as a gift from a friend and was first impressed with the very nice package of great photos and artwork. Honestly, it sat around for a while before I listened to it because I was never really that excited about The Wall as an album. Finally I listened from beginning to end and was pleasently surprised. I think this version is much better than the original studio release as it has a more cohesive feel to it and is not nearly as disjointed. The audio quality is fantastic too. The studio version was recorded in four different studios if I remember correctly, and you can tell. Here, the band is performing to visual presentations onstage so everything must stay together, and of course, there is always something magical about a live performance that you can't reproduce in the studio. All of the earlier PF live stuff is great though, like Cruel But Fair for example.

This is a must have for the hard core Floyd fan! Don't buy the cheesy two disc set, get the box set, it is a far better presentation.

5 stars for the audio CD...

But, more than a review I would like to ask if the "Is there Anybody Out there?/The Wall Pink Floyd" has been released on DVD as well?.

I have seen some DVDs on sale under the name of "The Wall at the Earls Court" but according to some reviews there...that DVD is a pirate DVD, nothing to do with this Audio CD.

The music is great, the bad rating is for Amazon. Although I've ordered the limited edtion, I received the "simple" editon. Of course, I got my money my money back (thanks for that) but I still wanted the limited edition. When I contacted Amazon, they've told me there is no way to ensure that I'll get the right edition and that it seems there is a problem with this product.

I never liked the studio version of 'The Wall'. All in all, I believe Roger Waters lost his mind and slipped into complete megalomania while they recorded their epic double album of despair. Of course, the wall has a group of outstanding songs that should have made up a single album. As a double album/cd somewhere along the way the music starts taking the listener down a one-way path to places that aren't very interesting at all.

That said I still have to give this live edition 5 stars. Why? It's a bloody good show. If you can get beyond the whining of Waters and concentrate on what he and the band accomplished theatrically then I believe you will find this a considerably enjoyable experience.

Plus, it's really cool to go back in time and hear Comfortably Numb played live for one of the first times ever. That's amazing in itself.

Listening to this, I truly realized that Sedaka made his greatest contributions to pop music in the '50's and '60's. Aside from the few hits (Laughter in the Rain, Bad Blood, Lonely Nights, etc.) he produced in the '70's, Sedaka's M.O.R. "Second career" mainly produced songs for the Geritol set. Buy yourself a good early Sedaka compilation (Sings the Hits comes to mind) and give this one to your grandparents.

My favorite song of Neil Sedaka's is "Amarillo". I can still picture when I saw him on a Midnight Special doing the song, smiling cheerfully, pointing his finger for the two quarter beats on the chorus. How can I seriously consider this to be his greatest hits without "Amarillo"?

Aside from that, I enjoyed it. I either was unaware or had forgotten he wrote "Love Will Keep Us Together", "Lonely Night (Angel Face)", and "Solitaire", three songs I enjoyed when performed by the Captain and Tenille and the Carpenters. I remember one day I had the flu, and I was lying down, listening to Captain Tenille's "Lonely Night" and Sedaka's slow version of "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do". (One problem I had with some of his hits was thinking it was a girl singing at first.)

It was a treat to hear my second favorite hit of Sedaka's, "You Gotta Make Your Own Sunshine."

This truly is the best of Neil Sedaka. I hadn't heard alot of these songs in so long, it is very nice to enjoy his music and remember years past. If you are a Neil Sedaka fan, this is a "must have".

Karen and Richard Carpenter's music ("Greatest Hits," the CD and its LP predecessors) was deservedly among the most purchased and listened to MOR Pop recordings of the 1970s. But for me, no American LP album is more representative of the time period than "Sedaka's Back" -- in a sense, the 1970s MOR Pop Poster Boy. It is one of those historical asterisks that Neil Sedaka (during his 70s comeback), was once a highly popular opening act for the Carpenter's Lake Tahoe appearances (often pushing back Karen and Richard's start times due to ovations).

The Carpenters' ballads have sometimes been unfairly scorned as suburban, white, conservative middle class culture (which isn't all bad, is it?); whereas, Sedaka's music is painted as gritty, ethnic, urban inner city, and politically sensitive. If these comparisons have some validity, it may be because the mom and pop music of the 1940s probably peaked with the Carpenters in the 70s; and Sedaka's edgier ballads were a transition to the pop - rock, musical mélange -- the social and cultural diversification -- thereafter. Of course, the Beatles invasion, from across "the pond," was no small influence on US musical culture.

"Sedaka's Back" (Rocket Records MCA 4963 - 1974) is maturation and broadening for Sedaka - influenced by his relationship with Carole King and other contemporaries, and subsequent contact with Elton John (a positive musical force for many) - overcoming inner city isolation reflected in his songs of the 1950s - 60s. But this is still typically Sedaka, as we shall always remember him -- sentimental, innocent, and with his heart fully exposed on his shirtsleeve. The music is upbeat (even the sad songs) and memorable - "Love Will Keep Us Together" is a favorite for my wife and me, for obvious reasons. "Sedaka's Back," with his biggest all-time hit, "Laughter in the Rain" has too much energy to be time capsule material, though it can evoke reminiscences and nodding smiles.

The CD, "Sedaka's Back" is available under separate listing with four additional tracks, while this CD, "Laughter In The Rain, The Best Of Neil Sedaka, 1974 - 1980," omits three tracks from the original LP, "Sad Eyes," (done well by Maria Muldaur), "The Way I Am," and "A Little Lovin'." The original LP is best - "Sedaka's Back" (CD) is an acceptable substitute.

This is an excellent collection of Neil's 70s songs. It should be a 2-disc set, the 1st CD being his 50s & 60s singles. Is that too much to ask? Apparently, it is. I am also perplexed as to why this CD was not released on his 70s label, Rocket, which was a subsidiary of MCA Records (still a major label). Although I am pleased with the songs themselves, the CD quality was indeed lacking, to my ears. They should've "re-remastered" it. I have heard better audio quality on many cassettes and vinyl. I recommend it if you are a fan of this very talented artist!

If you've been looking for a definitive collection of one of Country Music's premier songwriters, well, here it is. This is a Raven Records release (Australian) and I admit to be a bit hesitant to order it. But, the sound and mixing is just fine and well worth the affordable price. This CD contains 25 songs (4 bonus tracks; including "Detroit City"). The earliest Mel hits are here, including "Sawmill", "Midnight....", and "Arms of a Fool". Best of all, they're Original, not lame re-recordings. There's also a fine set of liner notes which provide a detailed bio and quick-discography review of Mel for the decade of '70-'80. Get it while it's still available.

I hate to sound like a broken record in my reviews, but here's another career retrospective that has been needed for years. Mel Tillis was a fine singer in that 1970s vein of country music, and he was an even better writer (Detroit City, now thats a song). Another victim of shoddy collections, Tillis gets his due in this nice lineup of hits and some lesser known interpretations of his compositions that hit for other singers. My favorite Tillis cut has to be "Send Me Down to Tuson," though "Coca Cola Cowboy" and "I've Got the Horse" are up there. And there are real nice liner notes. Why did an Australian company have to do this release, don't American labels understand what they have in the vaults? And again the broken record--dare we dream of a Bear Family box!

Several Tillis Compilations have been released over the Years, all of them SHORT, and all of them lacking many essential songs. FINALLY Raven Records has blessed us with this Treasure of Country Music...25 Wonderful Tunes, covering Multi Labels, and including all of Tillis' Greatest Sides, from His own #1 Country Hits to those He wrote that were Major Hits for others; An informative CD Booklet with some good Photos, and Excellent Remastered Sound. I am listening as I Type, it's very refreshing to Hear Old-Time Country, with Fiddles and Steel Guitar, and REAL Heartfelt Honky Tonk Vocals, unlike so many Rock-Oriented "Country" Songs of Today...Highest Reccomendation
