Cars is a typical Disney-Pixar animated movie in that it deals with an anthropomorphic character (here, a car) and the heartwarming values of family and friendship. (Alas, we'll have to wait a little while longer for the company to take on greed and selfishness.) The accompanying soundtrack is equally typical in that it's split between catchy pop songs and a score by Randy Newman. The clear highlight of the pop tracks is Sheryl Crow's boisterous, huge-sounding "Real Gone" (her best song in ages). Rascal Flatts also cover Tom Cochrane's 1991 hit "Life Is a Highway," while John Mayer rocks out on "Route 66" (Chuck Berry's elegantly lean version is included as well). For his part, Newman continues his distinguished association with quality animation by supplying a nimble score. It's fun to hear him deploy riffs that wouldn't be out of place on a Quiet Riot album on the bombastic "Opening Race," while the bluesy "Bessie" does George Thorogood with a tuba. The CD's overall Southern flavor is emphasized by the frequent use of banjo and slide guitar, as well as by score tracks cantering about, like "McQueen and Sally." And, as usual, Newman delivers a nostalgic, misty-eyed song--in this case "Our Town," performed by that master of sensitive laid-back charm, James Taylor. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Good, but a little too country/western.......2007-07-17
My family LOVES a couple of the songs - Sheryl Crow's "Real Gone" and Brad Paisley's "Life is a Highway," but several of the rest are just too mellow or country/western-style for our taste. But there's a pretty good remake of "Route 66," as well as the classic original. All in all, it's worth the money just for those songs.
Fun to drive with Cars!.......2007-07-13
Used Cars Gotta love it! The movie's great and having the music in the car makes it a fun ride!
great cd.......2007-07-10
Great movie soundtrack cd. Lots of good songs and music; if you've seen the movie, you can almost see the action going on with the different orchestral pieces. The kids love the songs. We've only had the cd a couple of weeks but the kids are already singing along with the songs; the kids are 2 and 5.
Cars.......2007-06-14
My son loved the movie and we love the soundtrack. Sheryl Crow's song is great!
My boys love it!.......2007-05-25
I love this CD as much as my boys do. It is so upbeat and fun! We listen to this in the car all the time and the boys love to tell me what scene is happening with each different song. They even like listening to the back half of the CD and describing each part that is going on. I would definitely recommend this for any Cars fan - it's great!

This collection of chamber works by contemporary African American composers offers a fascinating look at how history and musical languages interweave. Olly Wilson's "Sometimes" is a tremendous exploration of voice and tape, held steady by William Brown's tenor, which seems to extend its range warmly while fragmenting "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child." T.J. Anderson's equally striking "Intermezzi," a trio for tenor saxophone, clarinet, and piano, presents assorted miniatures that come together improvisationally. Likewise, Donal Fox's contributions draw from "Intermezzi" and "Sometimes," inverting and interrogating constructions in freely improvised segments. David Baker's "Through This Vale of Tears" is a lengthy song cycle, using Brown's tenor, Vivian Taylor's piano, and a string quartet in a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's wonderful to hear how 20th-century classical techniques merge with sonorities gleaned in part from avant-garde jazz. --Andrew Bartlett

En Evocative Musical Escape to England.......2006-04-13
I bought this CD on a whim, and it far exceeded my expectations. Edward Flower's arrangements of these folk songs (most for two guitars) are truly exquisite; each piece is a miniature artistic gem, capturing the soulful, plaintive, and often melancholy mood of these timeless tunes. This is a great CD to put on when you want to relax. Just sit back with a cup of tea, close your eyes, and let your mind drift off to the quiet meadows, shady woods, and green rolling hills of England!

A Musical Companion for the Book, Lost Chords.......1999-12-01
If you don't have a large record collection of hot jazz from the '20's,'30's, and '40's, this CD is an excellent purchase for two main reasons. First it's a good survey of white hot jazz in its own right. For example, if you like the Casa Loma Orchestra's cut that's included, you can buy a complete CD (as I did) of that group.
The other more interesting reason is that it is a companion to the incredible book of the same name. Now you can follow along and hear just what the author, Richard Sudhalter, is talking about -- sort of a mixed media experience. This is the reason that the CD does not follow strict historical order when it comes to the takes it contains, which is slightly off-putting without the book to go along with it.
You can buy the CD without the book, but if you buy the book, you really should buy the CD as well.

"Utterly" Great Album.......2004-07-12
I wish this was a ten star rating system, cause I would give this album a nine. I just have to reserve a five for a pinnicle record. Anyways, this is a really good live record. Like all of the "Live in a Dive" series, this record really represents the specific Utters show. I've seen them twice and it is picture perfect. Why are the Utters the Bay Area's favorite band? Listen and find out. After getting home from the enitial drive from buying the cd, I was on song 12, only half the way through. Yes!!! So many good songs! If there is one thing you can say from a Fat Wreck Chords release is that you are guarenteed to get your money's worth and more. PS. I was surprised at how well the backup vocals came out, they can't be easy.
Live in a Dive.......2004-07-10
This release, the latest in the Fat Live in a Dive series, sees San Franciscan punks Swingin' Utters perform 23 of their fun punk tunes live. As with most punk bands, the Utters are at their best in their live element, proving that they can do their thing on stage just as well as they do in the studio, but with the added bonus of the on-stage banter, screams from the crowd, and of course the energy of a live punk show. All of these elements come together to give Live in a Dive that unique atmosphere that you can only find on a good live release. It's hard to pick highlights because it's all so good and so varied, with songs spanning the better part of their 15 year career having been included. With the acoustic `Fruitless Fortunes', and `All I Can Give', the faster, rawer, punk classics `Five Lessons Learned' and `Here we are Nowhere', and, of course, the fun sing-along favorites `The Dirty Sea' and `Catastrophe', the Swingin' Utters ensure that all bases are covered, making Live in a Dive accessible to all fans, new and old.

Customer Reviews:
Has more soul than some.......2001-10-03
This disc is CDCM's second visit to the studios at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. My main criticisms of the earlier release were concerned with the rather cold nature of the compositions featured, together with the disc's concentration on music by male composers. I am pleased to say that both of those criticisms have been addressed somewhat with this release.
The disc begins with Neil B. Rolnick's "Vocal Chords" (1988). This is an 8-minute wordless blues-style improvisation for singer and live electronics. It comes across as a fun exercise for performer - Kathleen Myers in this recording - as well as for concert audience and it works rather better on CD than does many another live improv' I have heard. Rolnick's other work on the disc is an exploration of blues-related material of a somewhat different kind. By taking samples from a recording of the legendary blues master, Robert Johnson, and reconstructing/deconstructing these materials, "A Robert Johnson Sampler" (1987) invites a re-examination of countess blues clichés. The result is not only amusing and thought provoking; it is surprisingly listenable, alternating between the whimsical and the introspective throughout its 13-odd minutes.
Pauline Oliveros' "Lion's Tale" (1989) is essentially a work for computer-controlled gamelan, with samples from the Berkeley Gamelan triggered by a computer program at rates up to 1800 per minute. It sounds much like a gamelan improvisation but involves speeds that could simply not be played by human performers. Like much music from Oliveros, it is necessary to listen quite deeply into this piece to get the most from it. At a surface level, the piece comes across as a pleasant but not terribly interesting work. Deeper listening, however, allows the rapidly triggered samples (which imbue the piece with an electronic-like texture at times) to work a somewhat hypnotic and transfiguring effect over its 15-minute duration. Nevertheless, I suspect that the piece probably works better in live performance than on a recording.
The same feeling lingers throughout "Child and the Moon-Tree" - a 17-minute reduction of a longer, fully staged work, by composer and vocalist, Julie Kabat. The work is a poly-stylistic assemblage of sung and spoken texts, with an accompaniment of computer processed sound samples ranging from Noh Theatre music, the chanting of a Mongolian shepherd, whale songs and musical saws. Unfortunately, while Ms Kabat's voice is a treat to listen to, we are given no real guide to the story being recounted and it is easy for a listener to become lost quite quickly. It also leaves me with the feeling that too much has been cut from the work in order to reduce it to a size suitable for inclusion on this disc. Perhaps CDCM should have taken the plunge and featured the entire work?
Barton McLean's "Visions of a Summer Night" (1989) is another work presented here in extract form only. Just two of its movements are featured: 'A Little Night Music (Eine Kleine...) ' and 'Demons of the Night'. Both present something of an electronic, yet almost orchestral-sounding, picture of midsummer evenings in North-eastern US. The first uses conspicuous and persistent cricket samples to establish its relevance, while the latter presents rawer synthetic instrumental voices to concoct an altogether more abstract musical portrait of imaginary (one hopes!) terrors of the night. Both extracts incorporate a rather more raucous and raw-edged character to their sound-world than would accord with my own experiences of North-eastern US nights, being decidedly more nightmarish and foreboding than I would have expected. Or maybe Petersburg, NY is a scarier place than either Massachusetts or Connecticut?
The disc ends with Joel Chadabe's "Modalities" (1989), an interactively computer-composed piece, of little real interest to anyone not of an academic analytical bent.
Overall then, while not terribly likely to appeal to a very wide audience, this disc has much to commend it for those interested in late 20th century American art music, of which it is a fine example. Most potential purchasers would be wise to sample before they buy, however.
