Dust off your blue suede shoes and polish up the tail fins on the Chevy: this album transports listeners back to the 1950s and early 1960s with all-time classic rock & roll. Children will love the strong rhythms, (sometimes) silly words, and easy-to-follow vocals. Adults will enjoy the cruise down memory lane with megahits like "Rock Around the Clock," "Willie & the Hand Jive," "Rockin' Robin," and "Name Game." Retaining all the spunk and sparkle they did when rock was young, these digitally remastered tunes are ready to inspire a whole new generation of little boppers. --Deborah L. Moore

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2007-06-09

Not only does my five year-old son love it, but I do too. I just turned fifty, so I can relate to these songs' heyday. My boy loves them because they're joyfully silly!

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-05-10

My five year old son and I both enjoy this CD. The songs are oldies but goodies and really get him moving. We've listened to it while stuck in traffic and ended up having a lot of fun! I recognize some of the songs from when I was a kid, like Monster Mash and Chewing Gum, and then there are ones from well before my day like Rockin' Robin.
I highly recommend this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Good Clean Fun!!.......2007-05-07

As a mom, I am always on the lookout for music for my young kids. Our oldest wanted something he could keep in his room to listen to, but so many CDs these days have questionable lyrics. I wanted something he could listen to whenever he wanted. I found it!!

This CD is so much fun for the whole family to listen to...kids, parents, grandparents...everyone will love it! I was amazed that I could get all of these fabulous songs by ORIGINAL ARTISTS on one CD for this price! Usually, you will pay this much for music done by immitation artists. This was great! The kids thought so many of these songs were funny...Yakkity Yak; Splish, Splash!; Willie & the Hand Jive. We all had a few laughs and some very funny dancing. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

5 out of 5 stars Kids and adults will love this.......2006-08-17

A lot of the classic Rock and Roll songs of the late 1950s-early 1960s on this album. This is a great album to introduce to young kids and adults who love classic rock and roll songs.

4 out of 5 stars Toddlers Love Rock 'n' Roll.......2006-01-30

I purchased this CD for my 18 month old twins who absolutely just love it! It's great music for family gatherings because the old and young alike can enjoy singing and dancing along to it.

You won't find a warmer, more powerful and moving tribute to the City of New Orleans and its people and culture than this five-star, 13-track album that features some of the city's most revered artists. Young and old, the New Orleans Social Club members capture many facets of the Katrina tragedy while also celebrating in distinctive 'Nawlins styles the music that helped make American popular culture famous the world over. Nearly everything on this sumptuous collection of angry, compassionate, patriotic and hopeful sentiments are cover songs. But they are covers like you've never heard before in the hands of Cyrill and Ivan Neville, Marcia Ball in duet with Irma Thomas. Dr. John, Henry Butler, the subdudes and others. While Ivan Neville reworks Credence Clearwater's "Fortunate Son" into an even more sympathetic victim of an alienating bureaucratic system that underscores this democracy's appetite for war and domestic neglect, the Mighty Chariots of Fire let go a joyful gospel challenge to the nation in "991/2 Won't Do." But the political hue and cry that hangs over many of these tracks, including Dr. John's impromptu and melancholy reading of Fats Domino's "Walking to New Orleans," there are also some classic New Orleans music moments where engaging style, spirit and rhythm and nutthin' else rules the day. Just check Trombone Shorty's tasty "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You," or The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue whipping up a familiar medley of tunes as if it were a big pot of gumbo, and you know right then that the spirit of the city can never die, come hell or high water. Highly recommended. -- Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-06-27

This is an outstanding choice for those who are looking to be exposed to a full range of musical genres native to the Crescent City. One of the better CDs I've purchased in recent memory. Imminently listenable! Cyril Neville's reworking of an old Credence Clearwater standard is an instant classic!

5 out of 5 stars Sing Me Back Home.......2007-06-09

Created just 6 weeks after Katrina, this album reflects the emotions of the artists in an amazing way. The musicians of some of New Orleans' best.

5 out of 5 stars #1 on my most played list 2006.......2007-01-22

I am a musician and I play alot of instruments and genres. I like alot of different kinds of music..."Sing Me Back Home" is by far the best album I've procurred in quite a long time. The New Orleans Social Club is the dream "house band" for any front man or woman. The emotional breath of the album is really deep and full; the grooves are funky and clean.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation.......2007-01-04

Being a former resident near New Orleans for 40 years, I always loved the music of that city. Since retiring to the Philippines, it is even more appreciated now. The message of "Sing Me Back Home" can act as a rallying cry to those that left after Katrina. Both the artists and the songs were selected to portray the vast culture of New Orleans. The CD is truly a musical gumbo of styles, and there is something in the pot for everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Feed Your Soul.......2006-07-02

"We made a big ol' batch of gumbo and invited some of our favorite piano ticklers, street paraders, rhythm-and-blues singers, Mardi Gras Indians, troubadours and funkateers to celebrate the indomitable spirit of New Orleans. So grab a plate, fill it up and FEED YOUR SOUL"- The New Orleans Social Club inviting their fans to this new CD to raise money for New Orleans.

"Sing Me back Home", from the New Orleans Social Club, has a cast that came together after the Katrina disaster. The super group, featuring Neville Brother Ivan and Meter Leo Nocentelli--lay down piano-heavy Rock and Blues with such musicians as Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Cyril Neville, and the Subdudes, among others, bring the sorrow, anger, hope, and soul of the city's people. These musicians know precisely what it means to miss New Orleans, and they're singing, as the title suggests, to ensure that their city's spirit comes home. Grammy producers and friends to music, Leo Sacks and Ray Bardani gathered a dream team of their Delta-born musicians for a collection of songs that sing with and to the soul. This CD was recorded in just a week.

Cyril Neville's "This is My Country" and you feel the urgency and love for his city.

Ivan Neville sings the John Forgery's "Fortunate Son," The flavor of New Orleans comes alive with this rendtion.

"Look Up" is a stirring spiritual rendition by Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball.

Dr John sings "Walking To New Orleans", sorting the pace to the return.

Trombone Shorty's spirited "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You{ begs for foot tappin and hand clappin'.

"Loving You Is On My Mind" by the entire group is an emotionally laden song.

"Somewhere" by Henry Butler is a particularly affecting song.

"99 1/2 Won't Do" by The Mighty Chariots of Fire has a feel of excitement and this world re-owned gospel choir sings it with gusto.

The Subdues sing "Make A better World" this group of Delta City musicians came together to sing for their city.

"First Taste Of Hurt" by Willie Tee, who is a Louisiana swamp singer, with a fine voice, sing sof the pain they all feel.

"Where Y'At? (Medley: Jesus On The Main Line\ I'm Walking\ The Saints" The Sixth Ward All-Star Brass Band Revue featuring Brother Charles Neville is a rousing and fitting review of songs from NOLA.

"Chase" sung by Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, a harmonic tribal Unity that dates from the 1800's. This song sings about "no where to go, why chase me away".

"Why" sung by John Boutte sums up the mindset of the damaged Delta through Annie Lennox's song. John Boutte who was in Brazil when the hurricane hit but returned right away, says, "I've been here listening to everybody sling arrows at each other and no one is doing anything. Why do I see empty trucks passing by? The wind didn't do it, the rain didn't do it, the levee did it. We'll always have a will to make it. It's human nature. Hope lies in the people of New Orleans."

There is some feeling of loss and negativity by the participants in their minds but not in this CD. This is a passionate meeting of souls who have come together to sing for their city. There is sorrow, loss and wounded pride mixed with the love of their city. It all shows in "Sing Me back Home".
Highly Recommended. prisrob 7-01-06

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Doo-Wop Standards.......2006-02-25

They are known for 'In The Still Of The Night" but listen to "I'll Be Seeing You" and "To The Aisle". You will play them over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars In The Still Of The Nite wasnt all.......2005-02-22

Though this group could be concidered a one hit wonder group, they had more material than any other one hit wonder......I especially like the songs "I Aint Gonna Dance" and "You Can Count On Me"

5 out of 5 stars Great Doo Wop and R&B.......2005-02-17

The 5 Satins are probably best known for the classic "In The Still Of The Night" but they had a lot more to offer, as this CD demonstrates.
Plenty of classic Doo Wop here including their hit "To The Aisle" and there is some great R&B too.
My only complaint is the minimal liner notes but that's just quibbling.
All the tunes are the original versions and the recording quality is just fine.

4 out of 5 stars George's goof.......2003-10-21

Just now read Mr. O'Leary of Canada's commentary re my original review contained here of this great album, (submitted many moons ago, which shows how much of my life force and attention is given over to this stuff) wherein I lament the exclusion of two singles from the original album. Just for the record, I am not an "oldies" wannabe. I grew up with this music and I also own today the original vinyl 78 of this specific album, so I know whereof I speak. (said album featuring the exact cover photo as the CD)

The reason for the comment in my initial review was that I hoped to get a CD version which duplicated the original album and included these two neat titles. And George, if you aren't familiar with them, I suggest that you check out Master Tapes volume 2 here on Amazon, where you will find the items in question. Yes, they did record them and yes, the songs were on this original album. By the way, the original only had 14 cuts; besides the 2 aforementioned songs, "Again" and "Moonlight and I" were also deleted, and 10 additional songs added. These last 2 also probably didn't chart, so they don't count either, right?

The suggestion going forward is not to judge another reviewer, unless ye also be judged. I don't worry about what "charted"; I don't make a career of statistical analysis or chronological music forensics; I just care about the music I truly know. And George, I know this stuff. Bottom line; it's a great album in either new or or old format.

5 out of 5 stars Everything That I Expected And More.......2002-12-13

I am extremely pleased with this CD. 24 songs by the Five Satins on one CD at such a bargain price. If you are a fan of music from the 1950's and early 1960's, this CD is for you. If you like "Rhythm and Blues", this CD is for you. The great vocal harmony by the Five Satins is well captured by the excellent sound quality of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful first album! I still love it today! .......2006-03-17

En Vogue's first album just exploded onto the scene in 1990. I thought that they made a wonderful first album that is full of strong singing from the California-based R&B quartet. I've since lost the cassette, but I'd definitely get the CD version of this album. There's more emphasis on R&B, but the shades of hip-hop beats are sprinkled within songs like Hold On (still a classic) and You Don't Have To Worry. I still love the ballad Don't Go and a surprise is the wonderful remake of Natalie Cole's Just Can't Stay Away. They helped inspire many R&B girl groups that came out in the 90s and they had class too in this album and their performances. Please get this album soon!

5 out of 5 stars Great Debut Album.......2005-05-07

I enjoy the album still to this day. All the songs are good, but I listen a couple of songs more than others such as Hold On, You don't have to worry, Don't Go. This is a great album, which I don't planning on selling or trading anytime soon.

4 out of 5 stars En Vogue WERE Born To Sing!.......2005-04-03

I never noticed En Vogue much growing up. I guess I was more invovled with the hip-hop/soul quirkiness of TLC to really notice this sassy quartet. Sure I had heard of their mind blowing "Free Your Mind" and harmonizing funk of "Never Gonna Get My Love" from their highly acclaimed 1992 release "Funky Divas" but I never really delved into their music untill now. I brought "Born To Sing" at my local used music store and I was amazed at how fresh this album sounds even though this album is fifteen years old!
En Vogue has a style that is sexy, brash and classy, not to mention their stellar vocal stylings which all four women mesh well together and never sound boring or competing. The women of En Vogue (Dawn, Cindy, Terri and Maxine) take turns sharing the spotlight on their 1990 debut and they all can hold their own.
With a little help from Club Noveau (spell?-they brought you the remake of the Bill Withers classic "Lean On Me" and were once called the Timex Social Club which had a hit called "Rumors") members Thomas McElroy and Denzil Foster, En Vogue captures the esscense of early 90's New Jack with their debut.
The hits were the street funky "Hold On" which features a nice little intro of the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You" but seems out of place with the song itself. "Lies" was next with it's hip-hop New Jack piano and a female rapper named Debbie T. Then the harmonious "You Don't Have To Worry" and the drum machine drenched "Don't Go" summed up the biggest hits off the album and also the best songs off the album. The other tracks hold up well against the hits, such as the quirky and sharp "Strange" and the small interlude of the Andrews Sisters classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which had a hip-hop flair to it and that I wished was longer. "Luv Lines" is another notable which features some great keyboard work and showcases some demanding singing from Dawn. And the bonus track "Waitin' On You" features some sultry vocals from Cindy and a wonderful sax by late great sax player Grover Washington Jr. and the glorious remake of "Just Can't Stay Away" holds well with the original. Still there are some duds like the eerie "Part Of Me" which isn't great at times and it can be sleep enducing but still En Vogue take turns at singing lead on this one and I give them props for that. Also "Time Goes On" is verry annoying after a couple of listens especially with the repetative "Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock" it practically drove me insane at first listen!
With some funny interludes ("Party" features the girls at a party being approached by some stupid guys, it's verry funny and it reminds me of some of the guys that approach me at parties-you do want to say "NOOO!"), harmonous vocals, toe-tapping music and a sense of style and class from these ladies you will fully enjoy "Born To Sing" if you buy it. I'm now planning on purchasing "Funky Divas" and more En Vogue albums (though sadly Dawn left and the group it was never the same). A very good solid debut that makes you want to stand up and applaud!

4 out of 5 stars Where it all began.....pretty good!!.......2004-12-14

Cindy has the airy voice. Dawn, the soul. Terry, the power. Maxine, the sexiness. Combined, they were one of the most well-known girl goups known to man: En Vogue.

En Vogue was spawned by a couple of memebers from Culture Club, Denny Foster and Thomas McElroy. Who would've known what a group EV would turn out to be? En Vogue is the group that most artists then and now modeled themselves after and list as inspirations.

You can't go wrong with soulful voices that all fit the bill of being a true soloist. The voices blended together create harmony that is almost unheard of these days. Even in the faster songs you hear the harmony that we all loved. "Hold On" is the most recognized song that shot EV to super-stardom. It starts with a lovely and well-known acappella version of "Who's Lovin' You" from Jackson 5. Terry leads and the girls back her up well, and then Cindy throws down on the rest of the leads. Cindy also leads on the classic "You Don't Have To Worry", another hit for the girls. All of the girls share leads on the tight New Jack Swing song "Lies", which also has a cameo from a relatively unknown Debbie T (those of you with ears to the underground know her, mainstream America doesn't). The song flows effervescently. Also worth mentioning is the song "Luv Lines", in which Dawn belts out with the soul we all love.

If anything, a girl group must come hard with ballads or they will fall into obscurity; never the case with En Vogue. With such lovely-blended voices, how can you go wrong with ballads? Check out "Part of Me", my favorite song on the album. Each girls sings a lead and then harmonizes well, and the harmony soars throughout the song. This song isn't really a ballad as much as it is a socially themed song, but the girls reall shine on it. Definitely check out the song "Don't Go", in which Terry really shows off her vocal versatility. The girls throw down with this old-school type song. Speaking of old school, "Just Can't Stay Away" is one of the best remakes I have heard in a while. The girls' voices soar over Terry's leads, and this song is just a masterpiece!

We also are treated to a couple of interludes...one, a funny one in the beginning of the album, "Party" is just too much for me! lol. Also, at the end of "Strange", you get a funny interlude with Terry and Cindy talking about people. Also, "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" is an updated version of the classic Andrews Sister song...just listen to Terry say "uh uh, not that version" and you will laugh like crazy. En Vogue is definitely known for their crazy interludes.

The one song I didn't care for on here was "Time Goes On". I just couldn't get into it, because it really grated on my nerves after trying to like it.

En Vogue epitomizes harmony in every sense of the word. When you think of En Vogue, you think, "man, them girls can sing!". What a perfect title for this album. A definite R&B collector's item!!

5 out of 5 stars Born To Rule!!!!.......2003-11-24

Born to Sing is an awesome cd where all the women of En Vogue show their amazing vocals. The songs Just Can't Stay Away, Part of Me, You Don't Have To Worry and Waitin On You are prime examples. On this album you'll find the amazing hits Hold On, Lies, Don't Go, and You Don't Have to Worry. With this being their first album EV showed that they are the best girl group ever!

5 out of 5 stars Musically Eclectic Malange.......2007-05-16

This album is a 4.5 rounded up to 5. The offerings this time seem like Omar took a sampling of what was good about his previous albums and put them in this one. You can hear the trademark Omar Funk, heavy bass, heavy percussion, falsetto smooth ballads/duets, and instrumental orchestration in this album. Lyrically this album is all over the map too (good thing). He has the "finding a girl songs", "lost my girl trying to get back songs", the "leaving her alone songs", and socially conscious songs. As such, this album doesn't try to be in a certain groove, which is why I call it a musically eclectic malange. This album is part Hip-Hop, part R&B, part Bossa Nova/Jazz, and other forms. Although it probably was not intentionally made to apply to a wide audience, it actually does.

My favorites (as in get heavy rotation) in order are:

5. Get It Together - Jazzy Bossa Nova
14. Ghana Emotion - Dance Hall Bassline
8. It's So - Calypso Beat and bassline, percussions
4. Kiss It Right - Funk with a catchy hook
6. Your Mess - Funk with a catch hook
9. Gimme Sum - Hip-Hop suggestive mix with cameos from Common, etc.
10. Feeling You - R&B w/ Stevie Wonder cameo, simple lyrics.

The rest can be categorized via a genre:

Moog Mood Music
1. Lift Off - Nice instrumental mood music, typical Omar Moog effects

R&B Soul
2. Sing - Up beat falsetto
7. All For Me - Slow Funk
3. Be A Man
13. Stylin' - Up beat falsetto
11. Lay It Down - Anti Violence song
12. I Want It

All in all, there isn't a bad track on the album. A breath of fresh air for those looking for R&B alternatives and those looking to broaden their musical palatte.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic.......2007-05-14

Omar definately has a message in his music aspiration, peace, love & inspiration. His music is very potent, with very funky grooves to complement. Sometimes so funky that you don't realize the positive messages within the song, Sing If You Want It" is a good example, but not the only. This is quite an enjoyable CD. Ghana song is so special.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic.......2007-03-28

This is my first CD of Omar's. I guess his music and style is an acquired taste, that I haven't quite savored yet. My favorite track was 2 the title cut "Sing (if you want to)". Track 1 "Lift Off" is a nice lead in song. No. 4 "Kiss it right" along with the Stevie Wonder joint were good. The song done with Common & Co. was alright, he showed versitility. The songs with Jill Scott didn't quite work for me, with No. 7 the better of the two. Track 12 "I Want It" rounds out the songs that I connected to. Will check out some of his earlier work to get a better feel.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Artist who needs more air-time!.......2007-01-10

Sing (If you want it) is an excellent album. Omar is an outstanding vocalist who has his own style that works well in today's cookie-cutter world of music. Omar's music is smooth, yet edgy. This is his best work yet. This says a lot since I have all of his albums. I will continue to be a fan of this multi-talanted artist.

4 out of 5 stars Chill out in the sun........2006-11-13

Omar is most likely best remembered amongst the general audience for his timeless and still superb 1991 soulful hit, "There's Nothing Like This". Astonishingly he has endured a five-year recording break during which time he has constructed his own studio and established his own imprint. He as ever has constantly been touring and for some, the master musician has never really been away. Now Omar is back with "Sing (If You Want It)" which is the British soul supremo's sixth and perhaps most smoothly produced album so far.
"Sing (If You Want To)" is everything you would expect from Omar and in its genre is one of the stand out mellow groovesome CDs that have been released so far this year. What looks like an expensively put together offering should bring Omar back to the limelight, and he seems ready to grasp that now.
The CD gets going with the sublime and headnoddingly seductive "Lift Off", an all too short offering which is classic Omar and as such is ridiculously silky. The title track "Sing" follows which with its shuffling beat and heavy bassline makes for wonderful soul over which Omar easily but expressively drops his vocals ably backed up on the chorus.
"Be A Man" comes next with JC Bently giving her all on the vocals. The production starts off simple, but increasingly Omar can't leave the keys alone and interjects with jazz solo moog keys over the verses.
"Kiss It Up" is a simple back to roots bassline driven track which is funky in the extreme and needs to be set on repeat. "Get It Together" is classic Omar where he gets to warble as only he can, whereas "Your Mess" has a touch of the Jamiroquai's about it.
The album sees Omar collaborate with a variety of established acts from the likes of rapper / singer Estelle - on the evocative and downbeat anti-gun track "Lay It Down", and for Hip Hop fans the major hook up with the biggest UK name there is Rodney P (ex London Posse / Riddim Killa / 1Xtra), who, as ever delivers in his unique vocal style on the ridiculously catchy "Gimme Sum". "Gimme Sum" also featues Chicago's Common and a very yound sounding Ashman. All this makes for an interesting set of voices.
The production still maintains elements of Omar's soul but also features classic sampled drum sounds and a Herbie Hancock type bassline.
Prior to "Gime Sum" we are got into the mood with the big beated "It's So" which is contrastingly upbeat with a double bass bassline. In the track Omar espouses his love for all types of music and says how he is affected by music. For home grown soul heads Angie Stone graces the hybrid and slow tempo "All For Me" for some insights into love.
The biggest coup of the album may be the fact that Omar has held Stevie Wonder to his 1991 promise to appear on one of his records and here he turns up on "Feeling You".Whilst slightly muted and not quite having the sparks fly as you would expect, this is a creditable offering which is undoubtedly a rare situation. Omar should be congratulated for producing a really pleasing album which with summer finally on us should suit the purpose of backing music for a chill out in the sun.
Omar has tried to keep it simple, but years in the studio and practise have left the sound too over polished and lacking the hunger and grimeyness of his earlier work. No doubt this is the work of an established artist who is confident in his abilities, but at the same time has become a bit too comfortable in his own sphere. This album touches all the obvious easy listening buttons, but doesn't seem to offer anything outstanding.

The Temptations Sing Smokey leans heavily on a great soul-music tradition: the practice of Motown artists' covering each other's hits as album tracks. Not that the Temptations' versions of Smokey Robinson-penned Miracles and Mary Wells singles qualify as filler. Hardly, as Eddie Kendricks's falsetto makes a convincing stand-in for Robinson's on remakes of "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" and "What's So Good About Good Bye." Many of these tracks also underscore the strong doo-wop roots at the core of the Temptations' style, none more so than "Baby, Baby I Need You," which barely bothers to update its '50s influences for mid-'60s ears. This minor gem comes complete with three hit singles in "My Girl," "The Way You Do the Things You Do," and "It's Growing." --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A must have .......2006-12-15

If you are a fan of the early Temptations, this is a must have. The tracks are all the early songs, written by fellow Motown legend William "Smokey" Robinson that made them icons.

5 out of 5 stars It the tempts what's not to love????.......2006-09-14

I love this Lp. The tempts vocals are crazy on this Lp. Especially their harmonies on: The Way You Do The Things You Do (Eddie's voice on this record is incredible and the harmonies are perfect!)Baby, Baby I Need You (Eddie and Paul simply beautiful! Paul's voice is incredible on the part where he sings "You knew my lips were longing for the kisses you could give to me Ever since the 1st day babe that we met" Whoo! That man could serenade me anytime!)My Girl, You'll Lose A Precious Love, It's Growing, Who's Lovin' You (David: Effortless Perfection! I love his accent on It's Growing!) You've Really Got A Hold On Me (I think it's even better than the Miracles' version Don't kill me yall) Just my opinion. Get this Lp. You will no tbe disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Bodacious Release.......2006-03-09

This was their second release and it seems Motown wasn't too sure of its pull so they tacked 'The Way You Do The Things You Do' from their first album 'Meet The Temptations' for some insurance.
Well, they needn't.
This is probably The Tempts most consistant recording and it belongs to Eddie since he sings lead on the majority of songs.
I always tell folk who think David Ruffin 'made' the group to listen to their ALBUMS and they'll get a vastly different perspective from just listening to compilations.
Anyway the fellas are in full bloom here, with 'What Love Has Joined Together' being just one example.
There's a warning about knowing who's heart to mess with ('You'll Lose A Precious Love') and the a-ha! of not letting the one you love play you too close ( 'You Beat Me To The Punch ').
All the songs are written and/or co-wrote by William ( "Smokey")
Robinson one of the best poets/songwriters of all-time IMO.
Not only are the songs and performances superb ( my ex claims Eddie sounds like he has a cold on 'What's So Good About Goodbye' ), but the recording is also on point.
Who is that warbling in the near background during Eddie's solo on 'Baby, Baby I Need You'?
Yes indeed their Doo Wop roots are in full effect here ( '(You Can) Depend On Me'), but so are their sanctified gospel ('Way Over There') and blues ( Who's Loving You') legacies also.
They manage to fuse these ( along with R n' B) into a unique yet recognizable form and style that can may be described as The Temptation Walk ( the name of a dance and tribute record from the early '60's, y'all remember?).
Pay attention to how the Tempts both compliment and challenge Paul's lead on 'You Beat Me To The Punch'.
If I had to pick ONE Tempts release this would be it and its certainly a "Desert Island Pick" IMHO
What else can be said about a joint where 'My Girl' is NOT the best song?
The only negative is:
the cover photo
(them with their processes with Paul on lead)
isn't available as a wall poster!!

5 out of 5 stars A MARRIAGE MADE IN HEAVEN.......2004-12-24

A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE WRITER OF ALL TIME FROM THE VOICES OF ALL TIME. BOTH SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE TEMPS WERE TO GO DOWN IN HISTORY (UNBEKNOWN TO THEM AT THAT TIME). THEIR DESTINY WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO AND THIS ALBUM BROUGHT BOTH OF THEIR PLACES IN THE HEAVENS TO PASS. IT WAS BREATH TAKING TO SEE THEM PUT IT ON TAPE IN THE STUDIO.

4 out of 5 stars politics.......2006-11-03

I would love to get this play on DVD. This is a wonderful politial satire. You miss some of the jokes by only having the soundtrack. However since it is not out on DVD, the CD is great to have. The gershwin music and lyrics are great.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, lively, and full of character!.......2004-10-18

Ethan Mordden sited this recording as the finest of all Gershwin show recordings, and I would be hard-pressed to disagree with him.

Even though this was first recorded (and flopped) in 1952, when I put this CD on it still has the ability to crack me up in 2004. There is so much fun and character throughout the all the performance (including the orchestra) that it becomes so easy to forgive all of the musical... well... musical "weaknesses," let's call them.

Everything from the "one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine supreme court judges" to the number about taxation is hilarious. The chorus is insane and inspired. And Leonore Lonergan as beauty contest winner Diana Devereaux is really the star of this recording. As Marc Kirkeby stated in his liner notes for the Broadway Angel reissue of this recording, "a southern accent was clearly beyond her." However, I have a soft spot for her off-the-wall performance, and although her voice cracks at times ("Ah could throw mah arms right around yo' necks!") and at other times she is merely reduced to screaming ("Oh, jitled AM I!"), she has completely won me over.

Don't miss this recording. At like other reviewers have pointed out, the recording is of the perfect length so as to be funny but never get old.

4 out of 5 stars Vividly theatrical recording of classic Gerswhin score.......2004-02-09

OF THEE I SING was the first musical ever to win a Pulitzer Prize in 1931. There were no original cast recordings made at that time and no movie version was ever produced. In 1952 Broadway revived the piece but the revival was not a success. It did run long enough to get a cast recording. Long out-of-print it is finally back in circulation.

It's a mixed blessing. The Gershwin songs are great and the lyrics are very funny. The cast is ... well lets say the voices are loaded with "character." Jack Carson does indeed sound like a president. It is not the most musical voice, but then most of the score is sung by the chorus and here the recording has a good one. The score has been given many tiny cuts and trims but these only serve to move it along faster. Some of the lyrics have been re-written and updated for 1952: "Propserity is just around the corner" becomes "The President is going to be a Daddy." (It actually makes the song more plot related.)

Those in search of the original 1931 version should seek out the CBS set that pairs OF THEE I SING with th sequel LET 'EM EAT CAKE. Although it uses the original text and orchestrations, it is a rather dull recording and the cast is somewhat lifeless. Despire the porrer singing this old album is actually much more enjoyable and sounds vividly theatrical with little snatches of dialogue to help explain the story. At 43 minutes it never overstays its welcome.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid, avoid, AVOID!.......2002-08-19

It pains me to say this, but I have absolutely NOTHING positive to say about this CD of the poorly casted, weakly orchestrated, unsuccessful 1952 revival of the Gershwin Brothers' masterpiece "Of Thee I Sing". The score is severely truncated and the tempo seems to be rushed in order to fit as many songs as possible on the original LP. References to 1950s politics were added to the text to contemporize the book, but now seem hopelessly outdated. The singing is remarkably unspectacular all around, but one singer in particular, Lenore Lonergan as Diana Devereaux (who only got the part because she was married to one of the producers), is absolutely awful! (One critic perfectly described her singing sounding "like Bernadette Peters with her finger stuck in a light socket". It also doesn't help that her Southern accent comes and goes throughout the CD.) Do youself a favor and find the 1987 concert recording of "Of Thee I Sing/Let Them Eat Cake" no matter the cost, and skip the 1952 revival CD without another thought!

5 out of 5 stars Two Of The Greatest Albums From The 1960s.......2007-04-18

Though the Supremes are acknowledged as having some of the best singles from the 1960s, it is oftentimes overlooked that Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross had albums that not only defined an era, but will continue to stand the test of time.

More Hits by the Supremes was the third of five albums released by the trio in 1965 and is one of the greatest albums ever, period. The 12 songs - clocking about 33 minutes - were written by Brian Holland-Lamont Dozier-Eddie Holland, with the music performed by The Funk Brothers.

The album features two number one singles - what could be called the trio's signature song - Stop! In the Name of Love and Back in My Arms Again, along with a single that peaked at number two, Nothing But Heartaches. The B-sides - I'm In Love Again, Whisper You Love Me Boy and He Holds His Own, respectively, demonstrates the quality of the chart-toppers, since they could have been strong singles.

The gamut of emotions when falling in love are timeless in Honey Boy and Who Could Ever Doubt My Love, the latter being so underrated due to the quality of cuts on the album.

Released in January 1967, The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland, is an equally solid release, with two number one singles - You Keep Me Hangin' On & Love is Here and Now You're Gone - in a 12-song album whose running time is about 32 minutes.

There are covers of four H-D-H hits for other Motown artists - I Guess I'll Always Love You, It's the Same Old Song, I'll Turn to Stone and (Love is Like a) Heat Wave - but the Supremes add their own spark to these classic songs. The roller-coaster emotions of love are felt in I Wanna Mother You, Smother You with Love & Remove This Doubt.

The albums are on one slick-looking CD, the cover is a great photo of the trio, with the the dual CD jewel case having sleeves with the original album art. The historical significance of the albums cannot be stated strongly enough.

5 out of 5 stars This cd contains the REAL best of the Supremes........2007-02-25

Before Diana Ross and the Supremes, there were THE SUPREMES, the original Supremes. These 3 women had a very long string of hit singles and albums. Of all the recording packages released, this collection has included many of the most profound compositions of Holland, Dozier, Holland. The vocal performances are as memorable as the band tracks. The recordings are virtually all in stereo as intended. I have all of the Supremes collections and anthologies but none of them contain all of the songs listed here. Maybe someday they might re master this set of songs in 24 bit. This music is marvelous.

4 out of 5 stars Halcyon Supremes.......2006-07-16

Although four albums separate 1965's More Hits By The Supremes and 1967's The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland, these two albums make natural partners since both feature only the compositions of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (abetted on I'll Turn To Stone by R Dean Taylor).

This was the songwriting team most associated with the Supremes during their heyday, and both albums were produced by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. In the UK the second album was cautiously re-titled The Supremes Sing Motown in case the names were insufficiently familiar.

Some of the most halcyon Supremes hits are on this album - You Keep Me Hangin' On, Stop! In The Name of Love, Love is Here And Now You're Gone, Back In My Arms Again, Nothing But heartaches - and all the B-sides, almost equally good, and including Going Down For The Third Time, which could have been an A-side but turned up later in the year as the flip of Reflections.

Ask Any Girl is the oldest recording, having first been the B-side of Baby Love in 1964, and was also on their earlier Where Did Our Love Go? album in a slightly longer mix. Similarly, You're Gone But Always In My Heart had first seen service as the B-side of Come See About Me in 1964. Honey Boy, He Holds His own and Whisper You Love Me Boy had earlier been assigned to Mary Wells, while I Guess I'll Always Love You had been a hit for the Isley Brothers, Heatwave for Martha and the Vandellas and It's The Same Old Song for the Four Tops. They also had I'll Turn To Stone on a B-side but the Supremes' take on the song came out first.

Both stereo albums feature the classic Supremes line-up of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard and the top line of brilliant uncredited Motown musicians who contribute so much to this solid 65 minutes, which will be over more quickly than you could imagine. Put it on repeat play.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!-This is an early R&B/Rock & Roll/Pop Masterpiece!.......2005-09-26

I'm referring particularly to "More hits by the Supremes", but the entire collection is pretty good. "More hits" is one of the greatest albums that I have ever heard and it truly represents the height of the 1960's hit-machine Motown sound. This album may have THE greatest rhythm section that I have ever heard on a single album. I used to feel that this title belonged to The Beatles' "Rubber Soul" but now I'm more inclined to believe that that nod belongs to this outstanding piece of work here. Both albums actually came out the same year (1965) and I will say that it is obvious after listening to these albums that Paul McCartney was listening closely and really learned a lot from James Jamerson. James Jamerson was basically the in house bassist for Motown and along with the brilliant drummer Bennie Benjamin, was largely responsible for the backbone of most of their hits. Jamerson actually gives his greatest single performance on Stevie Wonder's "I was made to love her" but as far as whole albums go, it doesn't get much better than "More hits by the Supremes". The Funk Brothers were one of the most brilliant group of musicians in the history of popular music, and I often just have to sit back and marvel when I hear them in action. The harmonies of the Supremes and the song writing of Holland-Dozier-Holland on this album are also a great representation of the height of 1960's hits era Motown. This album is a major blast too. Most of this album is so fun that you may find yourself dancing without even realizing it :-). "Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland", originally released in 1967 is solid but not quite as good as "More hits...". It has its gems such as the magnificent "You keep me hangin' on" (The Funk Brothers are truly amazing once again with Jamerson giving yet another seemingly effortless virtuoso performance) along with a few others (their cover of "Heat Wave" and other songs from other Motown acts are all pretty much just as good as the orginals, which is not all suprising because they all have the same session players). All of this makes this 2 album cd a really worthy purchase. I found this set at a local record store for the price of a single cd and it was well worth it. And besides, unless Motown decides to go ahead and issue these albums separately, as far as I know this, is the only way that you can get either one on cd. So basically, "More hits..." is great, "Holland-Dozier-Holland" is solid, and this album should be a part of every music lover's collection!

5 out of 5 stars 2 Ultimate Studio Albums by Diana Ross And The Supremes.......2005-05-26

In 1964, The Supremes had three consecutive No.1 hit titles to their credit: Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love and Come See About Me. By 1965 Supremes mania was spreading across the globe like wild fire. They were, by far, Motowns biggest selling act and were literally pumping out hit after hit.

This aptly titled album captures The Supremes in their prime. The sensational combination of harmonies of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson was just magical. The Supremes were not least aided by the excellent production skills of the sheer genius songwriting trio, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, more commonly known as simply Holland-Dozier-Holland. Then of course there were Motowns legendary in-house band known as The Funk Brothers that were responsible for the vast majority of the groups biggest hits.

At the dawn of 1965, The Supremes staggeringly enjoyed their fourth consecutive chart topper with that familiar classic Stop! In The Name Of Love - undoubtedly one of their key landmarks. Stop! In The Name Of Love was more dramatic than their previous three hit singles and the groups lead singer, the divine Diana Ross, was clearly progressing as a highly adept vocalist whilst evidently developing a unique style and sound of her own. Her soft, yearning voice blends beautifully with the far grittier vocal style of the groups founder, Florence Ballard and the sweet, warm harmonies of Mary Wilson.

Even more of a progression on their part was The Supremes FIFTH consecutive chart-topper Back In My Arms Again. Stunning musically, this was somewhat sharper in its tone and Ross packs in a solid, far more assertive vocal performance. At this stage, The Supremes only real competition on the charts were Elvis Presley and The Beatles but by far The Supremes were the most succesful female vocal group.

Their sequence of chart-toppers was abruptly broken with their next single, the delightful Nothing But Heartaches. A catchy confection of Pop and traditional black Rhythm And Blues, the track all the more surprisingly dipped at No.11 - certainly a respectable position which a lot of artists at that time would have killed for, but a major disappointment when their previous five singles had raced their way to pole position. Nothing But Heartaches did admitedly sound formulaic especially as it bared a slight resemblance to Back In My Arms Again which may have been a strong factor as to why it proved less succesful.

The totally infectious Mother Dear had originally been lifted as a single but was then hastily withdrawn and replaced by Nothing But Heartaches. Mother Dear undoubtedly would have been a big hit regardless!

The rest of the More hits By The Supremes (1965) album was jam packed with potential singles. Each track carried the traditional Motown sound. Honey Boy was classic Supremes through and through which continued their Baby Love ethos where as the dramatic Who Could Ever Doubt My Love was musically similar to Stop! In The Name Of Love but yet there is still something distinct and unique about it.

The rolling Ask Any Girl was simply fabulous opening with a yearning performance from Ross, the track then catapults into the classic Motown sound with Ross sounding fantastic against the strong, thumping repetitve rhythm section. Ask Any Girl had previously surfaced on the Where Did Our Love Go (1964) album as well as being used as the B-side for their cross-Atlantic No.1 hit, Baby Love.

You could indeed argue that the early Supremes sound was formulaic, which is very true, but all the more surprisingly this project emerged as such an enjoyable and belting album. The ballads proved highly effective for the growing Diana Ross sound as she conveyed such an effortless flair on numbers such as the yearning Whipser You Love Me Boy where as she proves an even more devastating vocalist on the fantastic The Only Time I'm Happy.

He Holds His Own contains a gentle piano backdrop with Ross putting in a breathy, seamless performance which blends beautifully with the warm harmonies of Ballard and Wilson. More upbeat was the sweeping rhythm section on I'm So Glad Heartaches Don't Last Always whilst both stunning and touching by its mere simplicity is the beautifully delivered I'm In Love Again, a poignant number that Ross tackles with ease and finesse.

More Hits By The Supremes (1965) is simply ESSENTIAL to any Diana Ross and/or The Supremes/Motown fan. At this early stage in The Supremes career Motown hadn't yet fully recognised the strong potential in albums being used as pieces of musical art and true, More Hits... like any other studio album by other Motown acts at that time was crammed with singles and alternative filler and B-sides but every track on More Hits By The Supremes (1965) are indeed high graders making this more than a recommended album.

In late 1966, The Supremes enjoyed their EIGHTH chart-topper with the startling classic, You Keep Me Hanging On. You Keep Me Hanging On was quite a dramatic change in style for The Supremes with the rolling rhythm section, courtesy of Motowns divine in-house band The Funk Brothers, having a much harder edge, diverting The Supremes into the Rock&Roll genre. Diana Ross' lead vocal performance is also far more assertive and she sounds as though she's virtually howling at the exalting climax when she sings "so go on, get out, get out of my life, and let me sleep tonight". Quite a detour from those sweet love songs like Baby Love. An adventurous and succesful experiment for Diana and the girls.

Their next single, the fabulous Love Is Here And Now You're Gone, propelled to No.1 becoming their NINTH chart topper. The Supremes chart action at this stage was just amazing where they effortlessly pumped out mega hit after mega hit! Ross glides along the verses with finesse delivering a divinely sensual performance whilst also talk-singing in that great, intricate voice on the chrous ( a unique technique that would reach full effect on Ross' future blockbuster classic, Ain't No Mountain High Enough). The glorious, bouncy musical arrangements contain slight hints of jazz. Fantastic!

The accompanying album to these classic pair of hits was The Supremes Sing Holland Dozier Holland (1967). Like the chart-topping album The Supremes A Go Go (1966) contains many cover versions and also hosts some B-sides and left over tracks from various recording sessions.

You're Gone But Always In My Heart was a lovely heartache ballad recorded some years earlier in 1964. Ross packs in a compelling performance with her vocals sharp and distinctive, brimming tenderley with emotion. There are also impeccable backing vocals from Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.

I Wanna Mother You, Smother You may be admitedly formulaic to the genre but it comes complete with such super-fine performances from Diana and the girls that it's almost impossible to fault. These cracking album tracks on The Supremes Sing Holland Dozier Holland are all, to say the least, totally infectious!

The Motown cover versions all work extremely well with Ross' beautiful, sensual delivery on The Isley Brothers' I Guess I'll Always Love You being sensational.

Their riviting cover version of The Four Tops' I'll Turn To Stone is just as dynamic and as effective as the original. The wonderful contrast of harmonies from Ross' sweet tender voice to the earthy vocal style of Florence Ballard and the breezy soprano of Mary Wilson all blend together beautifully on I'll Turn To Stone.

Not quite as riviting but still great and compelling regardless is their rolling version of The Four Tops' It's The Same Old Song. Ross sounds strong and passionate throughout igniting the fast and furious musical arrangements.

Ross packs in a powerhouse performance on the raw, upbeat Goin' Down For The Third Time, which had been originally recorded by Martha Reeves And The Vandellas. Certainly this track was indeed far closer to the earthy style of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas than the swinging Supremes but Ross' unusually gritty performance exceeds all expectations as she really takes a big bite into the lyrics sounding dynamic and strong.

Slightly more reminiscent of their showbiz like persona on stage is the rather sugary sweet Love Is In Our Hearts which works well but far better is the stunning ballad Remove This Doubt, one of the Supremes BEST-ever album tracks. Remove This Doubt is touching in its mere simplicity and Ross' gorgeous voice is at its most angelic. The fade out at the end when Ross, Ballard and Wilson unite to sing the chrous is just magical and perfectly demonstrated their distinct, unique sound. Remove This Doubt had been recorded bak in 1964 and had initially been planned as a single at one point though it did not see the light of day until it was pulled from the huge Motown vaults and used as the B-side to their chart-topping classic, You Keep Me Hanging On.

Another stand out track on The Supremes Sing Holland Dozier Holland (1967) is the superb, rocketing version of There's No Stopping Us Now. Ross whips along those jamming musical arrangements with conviction sounding utterly magnificent in the process.

The album then bows out on a rip-roaring version of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas knockout classic, Heat Wave. It's debatable as to whether Ross' rocketing renedition exceeds the more famous Martha Reeves Version (I must admit as much as I also love Martha Reeves I do prefer Ross' version of Heat Wave) but either way judged on its own individual merits it is a pretty damn good version with Ross neatly surfboarding along Motowns somewhat complex musical arrangements where as Ballard and Wilsons eager and enthusiastic backing vocals merley add to that dazzling effect. Had this not been already a hit for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, this could just of as easily been a hit for The Supremes.

Arguably even better than their chart-topping album, The Supremes A Go Go on which this album had obviously taken its cue but it failed to duplicate the success of The Supremes A Go Go though still enjoyed big sales that propelled the album into the Top 10 album charts. The Supremes Sing Holland Dozier Holland firmly stands as one of their ultimate albums.

    5 out of 5 stars Greatest gospel.......2006-09-15

Sing out my soul is one of the greatest gospel album ever recorded. I've always love this album since I first heard it in the 80's. It has that smooth, peacefull sound that gives you that blessed feeling. My favorite is the 3rd track "Sing out my soul". You will love this cd.

    5 out of 5 stars Remember When?.......2006-01-12

If you like religious music you are going to love "Sing out my Soul." I will never forget "How I Have Longed to Draw you to Myself" and the other beautiful songs on this album which I listened to as a child. I have searched for it for years and was unable to find it. Although I am not a big fan of religious music, this CD is an exception. Trust me, you are going to love it. I have ordered three copies so I can present two as gifts to my coworkers.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational West Indies.......2005-03-05

We brought this album back from St.Maarten,(Dutch West Indies) in 1979. One of our family members who live there had it and we beat every music shop on the island to find it. The calming steel bands along with the inspirational lyrics seperate this album from all the others in its class. Sing Out My Soul is beyond description. My Aunte loved Hear O Lord so much she wanted it played at her funeral. Sadly over time, we were able to grant her wish when she passed. What a beautiful melody. If you like inspirational music, this is a must have.
