4 out of 5 stars Rock/doo wop standards.......2007-02-25

ROCK, RHYTHM AND DOO WOP is an excellent collection for fans of rock & roll TOP 40 radio. The majority here were top sellers in their day and got the most airtime. By those parameters alone, they would be considered "the greatest."

Main criticisms--
Since these tunes are more likely to appear on various artists compilations, even the beginning collector may already own a good percentage of them. Additionally, the three CDs here could easily have accomodated 90 songs, instead of 66.

The 64-page long-box style book is quite excellent-- packed with full page photos and lots of interesting details. Sound quality of the transfers is very good, as well. Altogether, this is a nice package of rock & roll and doo wop standards.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2007-01-25

The best thing that I can tell you about this collection is that so many people wanted to borrow it at my wife's job she had to bring it home for fear that someone would take it.Wish I could get a commission for all the people that said they were going to buy it. Sound restored wonderfully, brings back a lot of good memories from a simpler time.

5 out of 5 stars The Early Years Of Rock.......2005-12-03

Rock, Rhythm and Doo Wop, Vol. 1: The Greatest Songs From Early Rock 'n' Roll is yet another great box set from Rhino Records. The songs span the early years of rock music from the mid 50's to the early 60's. As the title suggests, all styles of music are represented by artists like The Drifters, Buddy Holly, The Shirelles, Del Shannon, The Platters, Ray Charles, Little Richard and many others. Well worth the price, this is a perfect collection for fans of this musical era.

5 out of 5 stars Was going to sell the set, but couldn't do it.......2005-10-01

I sat down at the computer to list Rock Rhythm & Doo Wop CD set on Amazon Marketplace to sell, but just on a whim stuck one of the CD's in the player to listen for a minute. Now I just cannot part with it. The music is so much fun, you cannot stand still during some of the songs, and it really brings back memories (for some of us!). If you enjoy music from this era, this is a great set to have.

Excelent collection . The Imperials alone pay for the price .
Highly recommended .

5 out of 5 stars Excellent option at good price.......2007-03-25

Ortodox liturgic music is sometimes as difficult as it can be considering the fact it belong to a very different liturgy no matter how christian it is.
This little gem can be helpful to understand not only this very important part of russian music but the soul of russian religiosity, guided by the superb performance of Novospassky Monastery Choir, that reminded me other great effort in the same way: the Choir of Santo Domingo de Silos Monastery.
Not always Naxos is the best choice, but in this case is definitely a must for those interested on religious music.
Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars It Touches the Soul.......2005-05-02

This cd is balanced with the melodic strains of the choir, and the rich, deep solos above it. It is an inspiration and I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Performance is fine, but recording and liner notes are poor.......2004-10-13

RUSSIAN DIVINE LITURGY is a performance by the Novospassky Monastery Choir of the Russian Orthodox liturgy celebrated by a bishop. The music of the Russian Orthodox liturgy consists only of the human voice singing in the Russian Church Slavonic language (a redaction of Old Church Slavonic made easier for speakers of Russian to pronounce). No instrumentation is included.

There is a great deal of passion in this performance as in the "Trisagion". There is also grace and sweetness, as in the "Great Litany" or the recitation of the Nicene Creed. This recording portrays those aspects of Orthodox worship which have wowed members of other denominations with their beauty and profound sincerity.

Though the performance was fine, the sound quality of this recording is unimpressive. Though a DDD studio recording, the engineers did not really explore the space of the venue and the voices are often muddled and indistinguishable. This probably would have sounded better in a church than in a studio with these engineers.

The liner notes are also of rather poor quality, as is unfortunately quite common with Naxos discs. There is no libretto, just excepts from several of the portions and descriptions. Church Slavonic text is missing entirely. The names of the Ukrainian cities Kyiv and Lviv are spelled according to the (often considered offensive) Russian manner of Kiev and L'vov. The commentary, which do not appear professionally edited, are uncredited.

If you are interested in Church Slavonic liturgy in music, I would recommend Arvo Part's setting of the "Kanon Pokajanen" penitence text. The disc released by ECM New Series features a detailed libretto with the Church Slavonic, fine translations, and an essay about this portion of Orthodox liturgy. Naxos has released here an authentic and sincere performance of the liturgy, but the poor liner notes and sound quality do little to recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive marvel from naxos.......2003-07-16

As someone new to choral sacred music, the price of this CD allowed me to experiment without risking to much financially.
I have never heard Russian Orthodox music before. It is more exuberant in many ways than western massesbut also has moments of serenity. This CD contains an amalgam of music from different cenuries which all fits together surprisingly well. The choir sings powerfully from start to fini. Highly recommended to anyone interested in the music of other cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Is like being in Heaven!.......2003-06-29

Beautiful version of the Orthodox Liturgy. If you aren't Orthodox, this might convert you. If you already are, it will bring tears of joy to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-16

Loved this CD! The tunes brought back so many good memories for me. I'd recommend it to anyone who grew up in the late 50s and early 60s!

3 out of 5 stars Oh, the Nostalgia..........2005-09-18

It does bring back those old high school memories and it's a great CD to turn up and sing along with in the car! Although I really like the CD, I was a little disappointed to find that several of the cuts were not performed by the original artists. Bummer.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another gem from England's Ace Records.......2004-05-24

In 1995 Ace Records released the first in a series of three discs entitled "Early Girls". As with just about every other Ace disc I have ever purchased this is a top quality compilation. There are great big hits everyone has heard of as well as some lesser known tracks just waiting to be rediscovered. Likewise you will find familiar artists and some you have probably never heard of.
Perhaps the biggest hit among the 28 songs on this disc is 1963's "Easier Said Than Done" by the Essex featuring the great lead voice of Anita Humes. Other chartbusters include "The Name Game" from Shirley Ellis and the Murmaids gigantic hit "Popsicles and Icicles" written by one David Gates who would eventually go one to write a bunch of hits for his own group. Has anyone heard of Bread? Among some of the hit records you might not be as familiar with are the 1956 hit "Eddie My Love" by the Teen Queens and the great Linda Scott with "I've Told Every Little Star". Other tunes you are sure to enjoy are Robin Ward's "Wonderful Summer" and the Aquatones memorable recording of "You". Then there are the real hard-to-find tunes like Carole King's "It Might As Well Rain Until September" and Little Peggy March with "I Wish I Were A Princess." My vote for biggest discovery on this disc was Betty Everett's 1964 recording of "You're No Good" which of course was made famous a decade later by Linda Ronstadt.
As we have come to expect Ace has included an extremely informative 16 page booklet. And the remastering job is absolutely top drawer. Give this one a try and don't be surprised if you go back for more---Volume 2 or 3 that is.

5 out of 5 stars Old gems from the fifties and sixties.......2003-01-28

Old gems from the fifties and sixties

This impressive collection of recordings by female singers, laid down between 1957 and 1963, is the first of three volumes. Few of the ladies featured here had a lot of hits. Skeeter Davis, successful for several years on the country charts, is represented here by I can't stay mad at you, but is best remembered for End of the world.

The set begins with Do wah diddy, a minor American hit for the Exciters which later became a number one hit in Britain and America via Manfred Mann's version. Betty Everett's version of You're no good helped launch her career, but the song became much more successful when covered by the Swinging blue jeans in Britain and (later) Linda Ronstadt in America. Completing an unlucky trio is Earl Jean, who had a top forty American hit with I'm into something good, only to see Herman's hermits cover the song and make it their own. There is nothing wrong with any of the original versions of these songs, leaving us to wonder why they did not have more success.

There are big hits here - It might as well rain until September (Carole King) and I love how you love me (Paris Sisters) were huge hits in both Britain and America. Other huge American hits include The name game (Shirley Ellis, best known in Britain for the clapping song), Dark moon (Bonnie Guitar) and Dedicated to the one I love (Shirelles, best remembered everywhere for Will you love me tomorrow).

There are many other great songs, mostly sung by long-forgotten one-hit wonders. Anybody interested in female singers of the era and looking for less obvious material should check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Chosen by someone with wonderful taste.......2002-09-03

Some of my alltime favorite songs from the pre-Beatles era found their way onto this cd, so I had to buy it: "The Name Game" by Shirley Ellis, "Easier Said than Done" by the Essex, "It Might as Well Rain Until September" by Carol King, "I Wish I Were a Princess" by Little Peggy March (how many song titles can you name use the subjunctive mood correctly?).... This is a fantastic selection, and the choices sound clear and sharp--well-done.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed.......2002-12-24

This is what it's all about -- a blues perfomance for all times by two of the best: Etta Jame and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Sound quality is excellent. The disk and it's companion, Late Show, are must haves for any blues, Etta James or Eddy Vinson fans. Not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Live Album From Eddie, Etta and Band..........2002-05-20

....how it's sp'ozed to be done. I found this in '88 or '89 thereabouts and have been in silent glee whenever I play "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" and follow it up with the duet "Please Send Someone to Love" for my friends and they wanna steal it from me. I direct them to Amazon for their own copy,'course. I can honestly say once you've heard Etta on this live album, you'll be a fan for life.

5 out of 5 stars MAN, I LOVE THIS!.......2001-07-24

THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHAT MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT: CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ORIGINALITY FROM THE ARTIST AND ENTHUSIASM AND PARTICIPATION FROM THE CROWD! THIS WOMAN MAKES ME CRY WHEN I'M HAPPY!

5 out of 5 stars You can Feel this cd!.......2000-05-22

Etta James is my absolute favorite artist! So, when I saw this CD ( and the other volume of the same performance) with eddie Cleahead Vincent I wanted it but I felt a little aprehensive about eddie being on there. Was I Mistaken! Eddie is the male counterpart to Etta. You can feel the two of them working this crowd together. Th music is Jammin' and the whole band is tops in their field! I wish etta did more stuff like this. I own Macaroni Joe's Pasta House in Amarillo, TX. If you ever get by here I'll let you hear some of it. When we play Etta James at the Restaurant we have at least 3 or 4 tables ask us to write down her name so they can go buy this CD...I think you will like it..Let me know..Jeff

5 out of 5 stars THE LOVE OF MY MAN !.......2006-06-30

Theola Kilgore will not only be remembered for this song, but also for "This Is My Prayer" as well. God Rest Her Soul !!

5 out of 5 stars Old gems from the fifties and sixties .......2005-08-16

This impressive collection of recordings by female singers, laid down in the late fifties and early sixties, is the fourth volume in the series. It seemed for a long time that there would only be three volumes but I'm glad that the record label extended the series. With Brenda Lee (Dum dum), Doris Day (Secret love), Rosemary Clooney (This old house), Little Eva (Keep your hands off my baby) and Nancy Wilson (You don't know how glad I am), there are plenty of big names here although this compilation will mainly appeal to those looking for more obscure material.

Other famous songs include Sincerely (McGuire sisters), Sad movies (Sue Thompson), Paper roses (Anita Bryant) and Tammy (Debbie Reynolds). Of course, many people now associate Paper roses with Marie Osmond who had a major international hit with her cover of it in the seventies. Of the others, A walking miracle (The Essex) became an international hit in the seventies for Limmie and the family cooking while Gonna get along without you now (Patience and Prudence) was also an American hit for Teresa Brewer in the fifties and a British hit for Viola Wills in the seventies. Another song that may sound familiar is He'll have to stay (Jeanne Black), which is a riposte to Jim Reeves who sang He'll have to go.

You are likely to recognize the Teddy Bears, represented here by an obscure song (Oh why) rather than their classic song (To know him is to love him) which didn't feature in any of the earlier volumes either. You might also recognize one or two other names such as the Cookies and Lavern Baker but most of the other tracks are by long-forgotten one-hit wonders. As with the earlier volumes, it's great to find these songs available again.

If you are interested in female singers of the era and you're looking for less obvious material, you should check this out.

Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas (1876-?) was a railroading hobo from the Lone Star State whose style and repertoire were obsolete long before the first of his two recording sessions in 1927. His last recorded song, "Don't Leave Me Here," a plaintive version of his "Don't Ease Me In," was his bluesy take on the popular early 20th-century standard "Alabama Bound" and is one of many gems in this unique collection of extra-Delta country blues, "rags," and medicine show or vaudeville tunes. With Thomas punctuating most of his songs by tooting on pre-harmonica quills, or panpipes, these colorful numbers offer a glimpse into a vanished world. After recording such delights as "Railroadin' Some," "Jonah in the Wilderness," "Red River Blues," and "Honey, Won't You Allow Me One More Chance?," the mysterious minstrel disappeared--unless that really was Thomas on the corner of Crawford and Capitol during Houston's winter of 1949. --Alan Greenberg

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Joyous.......2007-03-07

This music is absolutely joyous! It is thoroughly ancient dance music. I am listening to the album for the first time at this very moment, and I am overwhelmed with emotion. Henry Thomas's voice is perfectly inoffensive and endearing. Whole books can be written on the lyrics he sings and how they crop up in later tunes that would be called "Blues". The quills he plays make his music unlike anything else in all of Americana. His guitar playing can be plain, old, trance-like on the dance tunes, and intricate and glorious on the blues songs. At this exact second, I am listening to "Railroadin' Some," and I must conclude that this is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Glimpse of a unique personality.......2006-11-07

Much is made of Henry Thomas's stature as a 'pre-blues' musician, on whose music offers us a representation of the shift in black popular and social music from 'country' to 'blues' that was taking place in the earliiest years of the last century. It's clear that with Thomas's music the shift wasn't comlete.
However you look at it, this is great music, and if you like roots music there will be something in it for you. He's the only guy I've heard of play quills on a harmonica harness; heck, he's the only guy I've heard play quills who's not from the Miss. hill country, and he obviously plays them in a different style.
The oft-covered Fishin' Blues and the Old Country Stomp are deservedly famous from inclusion on the Harry Smith set and covers by the likes of Taj Mahal and Lovin' Spoonful in the case of the former, but the real surprise was hearing the clearly recognizable inspiration for Canned Heat's 'Goin' Up The Country.' I also love the way Thomas strings together disparate tunes as medleys without really missing a bit, clearly a holdover from country instrumental traditions.

5 out of 5 stars henry and john hurt are the best.......2005-07-20

henry thomas plays the quills on harry smith's folk anthology.
he has a warm happy feeling like miss. john hurt's sound.
both are first rate musicians, country folks who know their soul.

5 out of 5 stars Great music from the Black South.......2004-02-20

Henry Thomas was not a blues musician, although the four blues titles in this album are excelent. Henry Thomas was a songster, a performer of popular country songs. Fans of modern blues will find it hard to compare Thomas with people like Robrt Cray, Albert Collins or Albert King. But the music played on this CD does represent what was going on and popular in the beginning of the century. I found the Panflute playing reminiscent of African flute music. This in itself makes the CD worth listening to. The CD contains many types of songs. All are delivered with a great voice and inimitable - though simple - guitar backing. Henry Thomas has the musical charisma similar to that of blues greats such as Charlie Patton, Blind lemon Jefferson or Blind Willie Johnson (himself an example of a non-blues singer who is popular among blues fans). To me all the songs are great, but Railroadin' Some, Shanty Blues, and Texas Easy Street deserve special honors. I highly recommand the album.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic CD, but the liner notes?..........2003-03-02

This CD, containing every one of Henry Thomas's recordings, is a must-have if you're a fan of Lead Belly and other black musicians who performed pre-blues and early blues(but you probably won't care for it if you're expecting to hear something similar to Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf). Thomas's songs are full of energy and humor, the delicacy with which he played the quills providing an interesting contrast with his rough guitar and vocal style.
My only quibble with Yazoo's otherwise excellent packaging has to do with the liner notes written by Stephen Calt. Couldn't they have found someone who had more favorable things to say about Thomas? While acknowledging Thomas's deft picking on the few straight blues numbers like "Texas Easy Street Blues", Calt questions the "documentary value" of this music--in other words, he seems to have serious doubts as to whether Thomas was representative of the black music of his time. He points out the influence of white music on Thomas's recordings, but the same thing can be said of every black musician of his generation(Thomas was born in the 1870s); blacks and whites often performed and recorded the same songs.
There is one point in particular, albeit a minor one, on which I question Calt's analysis. He calls Thomas's "Shanty Blues", a slide piece, "a truncated version of a hillbilly song Fiddlin' John Carson recorded in 1927 as 'The Smoke Goes Out the Chimney Just the Same'...". I have never heard Carson's version so I don't know how similar the Thomas song is to it, but Calt is either unaware of or completely ignores the great similarity between Thomas's vocal phrasing on "Shanty" and the slide licks on "Guitar Rag", a popular instrumental recorded by black musician Sylvester Weaver in 1923(and itself later copied by white country musicians).

4 out of 5 stars I'm gonna get drunk and do my dirty talk........2007-02-08

This is a collection of off-color blues songs. The songs date from 1928 to 1939. Back in those days, they couldn't release a record that was explicitly about sex, so they used innuendoes. Like when Lil Johnson sang about "Sam, the Hot Dog Man", it could be interpreted to really be about a man with a large... you know what. Besides hot dogs, male genitalia is also represented here by keys, pencils, peanuts and bananas. There aren't as many songs here about female genitalia, but it does get represented by a stove and a lollypop. These songs are done with a wink and a smile. A particularly amusing one is the two part "Furniture Man Blues", where Lonnie Johnson comes to repossess Victoria Spivey's furniture. She doesn't have any money to pay him, but she thinks they can work something out (hint, hint). As I said, these songs rely on innuendoes, but there is one exception, that being the alternate take of "Shave 'Em Dry". The woman in this case comes right out and brags about her sexual prowess, using the "F word" and other words you can't say on the radio. Obviously, that version of the song didn't make it onto a record at the time. This is a pretty amusing collection of dirty blues songs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Naughty Tunes -- Including One Zinger.......2003-12-02

From almost the beginning of recorded music, songs have had some kind of sexual content. Compared to today where little is left to the imagination, this artists make clever use of double-entendres to tell their stories.

For example, there's Lil Johnson's "My Stove's in Good Condition" in which she asks someone to "stick your match right in the hole." In Bo Carter's "My Pencil Won't Write No More" he complains that when he tries to write his pencil is "drooping."

For those who want something a little less subtle there's Lucille Bogan's previously unreleased version of "Shave 'Em Dry." Lucille Bogan was as raunchy as any contemporary rapper way back in 1935! If you thought gangsta rap started the use of graphic language in music -- think again. There are lines in this track that would make Ice Cube blush (well, almost). In one of the track's tamer verses she says, "I'm going to turn back my mattress and let you oil my springs/I want you to grind me daddy till the bells do ring." If that's too much for you, there's her very different "clean" version. It's so different that you'll swear it was sung by a different person (who knows, it might be!).

Overall, "Raunchy Business" lives up to its title. However, with the exception of Lucille Bogan's alternate version of "Shave 'Em Dry," it won't offend most adults as long as its not a formal function.

3 out of 5 stars needs just a few more rarities from the early 60s.......2004-10-11

i give early classics a 3 star rating only because it needs just a few more rarities from stevie's early 60s period.the hits like 'uptight'-'fingertips'-'i was made to love her'-'yester-me, yester-you,yesterday'-have been included in so many of his greatest hits compilations-we hardcore stevie fans would very much like to hear his lesser known or unreleased early material. for example, little stevie recorded a song in the spring of 1963 called 'lois' which is available on motown's "never-before-released masters:from motown's brightest stars-the 1960's"/songs like 'lois' and the ignored 'purple raindrops' should have been included in this collection along with other unreleased unheard classics in motown's vaults.but this compilation does makeup 4 that misstep by including 'little water boy'-a duet with his older mentor clarence paul- the very seldom heard 'with a child's heart'-from his 1966 lp 'uptight'-and also from the 'uptight'album is the upbeat track 'music talk'-and also from 1963 is the funny bright 'monkey talk'-this compilation also includes a few tracks from stevie's 1964 album 'stevie at the beach'-one of my favorite tracks from this album is the beautiful instrumental 'ebb tide'which is so calming and carefree with stevie gliding on clouds with his harmonica with the motown band's cool, calming relaxing groove.this instrumental is so good,i repeat this track over and over again... nonetheless this compilation of stevie wonder as a child genius is good 2 have in your collection...

5 out of 5 stars This was the beginning of a brilliant career.............2004-06-10

Stevie Wonder, or "Little Stevie" the name he went by in the early days of his career, was a musical prodigy (master of the harmonica, soulful singer with a personality, presence and command of songs that was beyond his twelve years). This wonderful little glimpse into the beginning of a R&B master's career contains the songs that made him famous ("Fingertips--Parts 1&2," "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," etc.). Every track on this album is soulful, and the beats range from upbeat and peppy to introspective and full of spirit. I was amazed at the versatility and range of this wonderful artist even before he reached his teens! This album can be enjoyed by people of all ages--from young kids starting out in music to those who have loved Stevie for years. A real treat!

5 out of 5 stars It's soulful Clarence Paul, my dears!.......2004-05-04

brnn64 asked about who that is duetting with Stevie on "Blowin'in the wind". It's his tutor and producer Clarence Paul!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the serious Stevie fan !.......2001-12-16

This is the only cd in the world that contains one of the most beautiful songs that Stevie Wonder ever recorded. The top 10 R@B hit titled "With a childs heart ". It is a pure soul classic and hasn't been heard on radio probably since it's release in 1966. I searched for this song on cd for 10 years or so. It was always never included on his greatest hits cd's released in America. Everythings great on this cd but it's worth it's weight in gold just to hear the song "With a child's heart " for it's truly, truly, a forgotten classic.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to Find classic Stevie.......2001-08-01

Excellent compilation of Stevie Wonder's early period. Granted, he was not that much of a singer as a child, but he damn sure could make that harmonica smoke and inspired me to pick up this instrument as a youngster. Here we have the seldom-heard "Fingertips pt. 1" (most people are familiar with/pt. 2, with the "Everybody Say yeah," etc.). We have the followup "Workout Stevie Workout" where he really sets the mouthorgan on fire near the end, and the long-lost instrumental "Monkey Talk." Stevie gives Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind" some real justice (does anyone know who is singing with Stevie on that one)? But all in all, a treasure for hardcore R&B fans.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful spirit.......2005-10-14

One of the remarkable things about this CD of chant is that it was done by the monks of the Benedictine community of Santo Domingo de Silos decades before their CD simply entitled 'Chant' would take the world by storm. These chants were recorded in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and preserved (not in the best of conditions) by the abbey; the recordings had deteriorated and had to be restored. This makes this recording all the more remarkable, for one can hear the resonance and small details, the subtle accompaniment of the organ (not always a feature for chant, but here as a drone of sorts in the back establishing a base tone, or occasionally going up and down with the monks), and even background noise from around the abbey.

According to scholar Patrick Kavanaugh, 'there are no parallels to chant in the history of music in terms of its longevity, importance or influence.' Chant is generally without regular beats or meters, so different communities will develop their own sense of the chant. Chant can be designated as syllabic or melismatic, meaning that each note will be a different syllable for the former, or extended melodies on the same syllable for the later. Most of what is commonly understood as chant is melismatic, and that is what is represented here on this disc.

Chant could be used to sing the Daily Offices, the biblical texts, and parts of the Mass. That is what is on this disc - there are five difference masses offered here, with the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and Agnus Dei for each (the first three also have the addition of the Credo). Each Mass has different features. The first mass, 'Lux et origo', is one for the Easter season. 'Fons bonitatis' is a much more solemn chant setting. 'De angelis' is a very well-known setting, being used frequently. 'Cum jubilo' is a setting for the Blessed Virgin Mary, and 'Orbis factor' can be used for any Sunday in Ordinary time during the liturgical year.

The booklet included gives a brief description of how some of the chant has been studied, maintained or revived in different places, including the monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, which is a recognised centre of scholarship and practice for chant.

This is a very powerful recording.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best gregorian chant records.......2003-05-23

This is an excellent gregorian chant record, despite the fact that it was originally registered in the late 1950's, early 1960's; I would even dare to say, it is one of the best gregorian chant records I have ever listened. The quietness, the peacefulness and the clearness (every word sung is totally perceptible by the listener) that the monks of Santo Domingos de Silos Monastery put on their performance (if is possible to call perfomance to an act of pure prayer...) is simply a superb joy for the soul. I would point out the "Credo" played in the thirteenth track: absolutely fantastic!

Album Description

While Rock & Roll was in its infancy in the '50s, the Early '60s saw it becoming a cultural phenomenon. Artists like The Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson, Hank Ballard and others broke out of the '50s to become consistent hit makers of the '60s. This collection celebrates the beginnings of the first full decade of Rock & Roll with some of the most unforgettable hits of the Early '60s. This period saw many of the artists contained in this collection launch careers that would last throughout the decade and beyond.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good overview, but missing major entries.......2004-09-30

Varese's second volume in this series focuses on the years 1960-63, a time when rock 'n' roll was in transition between its '50s blues, R&B and country roots and the coming reinvention of the British Invasion. What's captured here includes the softer, poppier work of harmony groups and teen idols like The Four Seasons and Ricky Nelson, a smattering of '50s holdovers like The Everly Brothers, Duane Eddy and Hank Ballard, and neo-soul sides from the likes of Ben E. King and Dee Clark.

At a single disc of 25-tracks, this collection covers a lot of ground, including Brill Building hits, girl groups, soul, teen idols, pop, and adult contemporary - many of the threads that formed the fabric of early 60s radio. Though many of the tracks have been anthologized elsewhere (for good reason!), a few have been less overexposed, including The Little Dippers' superb choral-harmony-meets-country-lounge hit "Forever," Ernie Maresca's swinging' '50s throwback "Shout! Shout! (Knock Yourself Out)," and Billy Bland's fine soul side, "Let the Little Girl Dance."

Though several important aspects of the early 60s are missing (e.g., Phil Spector's Wall of Sound, Elvis' post-army hits, surf music, the folk revival), what's here is solid gold. Particularly interesting is the view of pop record production that hadn't yet gravitated completely to the coasts (NY/LA), with hits coming from New Mexico ("Sugar Shack"), Nashville ("Poetry in Motion" "Forever"), Chicago ("Raindrops") and Pittsburgh ("Two Face Have I"). True stereo on all cuts except 1-3, 6, 11, 13, 19, 20, 23, 24, and when you hear how much action is packed into Freddy Canon's "Palisades Park," you'll wonder if two tracks was ever really necessary!
