Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Customer Reviews:
An Awesome CD!!.......2004-01-03
the first thing that you must understand is that i am a metalhead to begin with. One of the bands that I like is a metal band by the name of Opeth, they are very heavy and dark, but they have accoustic classical guitar all throughout their music, with metal. I decided that it might be cool to check out some classical guitar because I love how they do it in their music. So I bought this CD and loved it! I love their mideival sound that they produce, wonderful!
(Pacific Coast Highway is the coolest track(8)!!)
The best LAGQ cd. Period........2000-04-09
This was and is such a remarkable disk, nothing has yet come close to match it's mix of styles and songs. It definitively marked the quartet's goal to step beyond the traditional classical into an adventurous realm of jazz, rock, african, americana, and even tossing in a little humor, without becoming "crossover" or "world music" as they now have. York's compositions "Quiccan" and "Bantu" move convincingly/decisively, unlike his drifting, overly subtle style of late. "Labyrinth" is such a great piece, I wish Ian Krouse would compose an entire cd for the group (his "Folia Variations" on their Evening in Granada" cd is also great). The Copland arrangement is full of energy and the Basie and Sousa pieces are just plain fun. This was the reason everyone started talking about this group, which makes it all the more sad they're going the direction they are now. Come back! Come back!
A successful marriage between classical guitar & pop forms........2000-02-23
The L.A.G.Q.'s wide ranging abilities are well represented in this eclectic collection of twentieth century music. Ian Krouse's Labyrinth is a striking, intense homage to Led Zeppelin. His characteristic use of hammering dissonances resolve masterfully into fun, driving, bluesy rock passages. Andrew York's Bantu is a perfect platform for the quartet's ability to utilize the guitars extended techniques. The piece opens with all four members playing different rhythms and timbres on the body of the guitar. Each member then drops out of his rhythmic pattern and into a harmonic framework, one at a time, until all four members are doing so. The piece is concluded in a retrograde of the same pattern. One may question a guitar quartet's ability to do justice to the dynamic nature of Aaron Copland's Simple Gifts, but this outstanding performance should put such concerns to rest. Each piece on this disc is executed with the kind of exuberance and taste for which the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet has become known.
Exciting music won't let you keep still........1999-04-14
The first song in this album has a strong, repetitive driving arpegio that is thrilling to a classical guitar lover.

This is what an atomic punk & soul revolution sounds like..........2007-08-04
This CD will blow your speakers and your mind at the same time... intense fuzz-face guitars, over-the-top fervant black soul preaching by one of the best female singers in the world and a pace that just will not back down. One of the few bands who can be legitimately compared to the MC5 in terms of intesity... every time I listen to this CD I want to click it off and go firebomb the man!! (and you will too!)
5 stars of talent, but for want of a "hit single", a "4".......2005-02-17
Ohmigod! How did I *live* without hearing this band before? I've learned their debut album was released in 1998. They've been through recent personnel changes, and this must be the re-energized result. Lisa Kekaula dominates with her lead vocals. Others have compared her to Tina Turner. I love Tina, but I hear Lisa as a cross between Cassandra Wilson if she led an all-out rock & soul band, and a savvier, older Janis Joplin who could give her all AND take care of her voice.
After spinning the disk my first time, I collared other DJs at WRSU (88.7 FM, New Brunswick NJ, live stream at wrsu.org) and we had a field day, comparing The BellRays to everyone from Humble Pie, Jefferson Airplane and Cream to an MC5 influenced by post-Bop jazz.
As you may imagine, the performances are blazing and memorable, evoking many influences but not aping anything too closely. This is re-invention, not invention, but the band injects plenty of their own personalities, and what could seem retro instead is as invigorating as fresh-brewed coffee. The one missing element is a killer song or three, material an audience could identify with the band, the "hit single" their talent deserves. In my fantasy for the BellRays' success, they write or find a song which, like "Private Dancer" or "Somebody To Love", kick re-starts their career.
If intrigued, you know you need to listen for yourself.
Thanks to fellow San Francisco Bay area musical mainstays Jello Biafra and his Alternative Tentacles label for apparently rescuing this album from import-only status.

No bull, no special effects - just good thumping R & R.......2005-11-28
Bought this on spec after reading the reviews and NOT disappointed. Gotta agree with another reviewer - a bit of Motorhead, a bit of Nugent, but a bit of Nashville Pussy and Foghat too. This is good stuff, straight in your face power bass rock and roll with a sense of humour ... turn it up loud - real loud and there's not a lot more you can ask for!
Rock Head.......2004-05-10
This is one kiss-ass American Red White and Blue Rock and Roll,From Track 1 on Fasten your Seat belt and enjoy. It's good to Hear some plain old american rock. American Dog Rocks..
Man's Best Friend!.......2003-06-07
First, this is straight ahead American, Power Trio, Red-Neck, Marshall's On 11, Rock 'N' F'n Roll. Having said that, I need to contradict myself and invoke the power of early, Fast Eddie on guitar, Motorhead (being from the UK and all). Here's the recipe for the American Dog:
1. Take 2 cups "Overkill" era Motorhead, 1 cup "Cat Scratch Fever" era Ted, 1 cup Brownsville
Station (Cub Koda's sense of humor is a must) and 1/2 cup of any other classic American Power Trio (Grand Funk, Mountain, ZZ Top, James Gang) you have on hand.
2. Carefully place the ingredients in your Cuisinart food processor or blender.
3. Set the machine on "maximum grind" and then run..., 'cause [it] is gonna explode real good! Got it?
This recipe is not for the faint of heart or eardrum. Don't buy this if you can't play it loud or if you prefer a fine wine to a cold brew. In the day of crystal clear, squeaky clean, bottled water corporate rock...the Dog is a ice cold bottle (or six) of your favorite local beer.
The Dictators asked "Who will save rock 'n' roll?" The answer is the American Dog. Amen
