Fujiya & Miyagi are not Japanese nor are they a duo, but are in fact a trio of rather cheeky Brits. Keeping with the multi-cultural theme, they also love Neu!-style Krautrock, with its metronome rhythms and cerebral melodies. This second release after 2003's Electro Karaoke in the Negative Style is filled with sly statements and cute jokes about commodity and materialism--Transparent Things is a particularly apt title--but more than anything else it's a goofball lark. With the music-nerd navel-gazing of LCD Soundsystem, but also the sonic aesthetic of Stereolab, it can be enjoyed regardless of whether you want to get geeky. Some might say it's best enjoyed that way, as some of the record's most enjoyable moments, like the skittery last few minutes of "Photocopier" or the instrumental "Cassettesingle" aren't about words at all. At times it's downright danceable, with tracks like "Reeboks in Heaven" exhibiting an abstract, electro grooviness. Their devotion to quirk ends up being a little too cute occasionally (like when they use the band name as a chant in "Ankle Injuries"), but their energy is so harmless it's easy to overlook it. Don't worry about getting all the jokes; Fujiya & Miyagi would likely be happier if you turned your brain off and cut a rug instead. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Fans of Hot Chip and Air will appreciate Fujiya & Miyagi's brand of witty and wiry electronica. Singer Dave Best whispers obtuse stream-of-consciousness lyrics about scoring new kicks ("Collarbone") and getting socked by a girl ("Sucker Punch") over slinky dance-punk backdrops. "We were just pretending to be Japanese," the frontman playfully repeats in "Photocopier." But don't be fooled -- their urban jungle soundtrack is the real deal.

This is one of the best discoveries I've made in years.
It sounds new, different and refreshing from the
current music scene. You will love it, too.

5 out of 5 stars oooooo! oooooo!.......2007-05-14

This album rules except for the song "Sucker punch" everything else is awesome...I really dig kraut rock and dance music, so when you put it together I really really dig it!

5 out of 5 stars do you wear reeboks in heaven?.......2007-05-08

my answer is yes, I'll even wear the high-tops to kick it old school... my only condition: I gotta have this album playing in the background. it is absolutely catchy from start to finish (it reminds me a little of the Hot Chip album, Junior Boys' recent material, even some AIR back when Moon Safari was the shananigan... it still is actually), but they got their own krautrock/electronic thing going without taking themselves too seriously... just listen to the lyrics for crying out loud... they're hilarious. the "collarbone" track is outstanding, as well as "photocopier", "in one ear..." and the aforementioned "reeboks in heaven"... they are perfect to kick it back before going out, or even for the after-party... it will get everyone in a terrific, funky, let's-get-up and dance mood... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining album from start to finish. Buy It Now!.......2007-03-09

Leave it to a couple of UK studs to come up with a sound this brilliant. 'Hilarious Euro-pop with slick bass lines' is a fairly accurate description but doesn't do this album justice. The recording is crystal and the beats are easy and fun to follow. "Got to get a new pair of shoes, to kick it with her, not kick it with you" is just one example of F&M's delightfully amusing choruses. This is perfect conversation-piece music that will extinguish any drama or awkward silence at your next gathering. Your guests will thank you, and your mp3 player will appreciate your good taste.

5 out of 5 stars Answer to the Review about the title of the Song.......2006-04-21

The title of the song that is played when Lloyd is walking down the street is called Red Right Hands by Nick Cave.

5 out of 5 stars Help Me Please.......2006-02-09

Does anybody know the name of the song or the artist in the movie.....it just plays a little clip in one part of the movie that goes along the lines of "six feet of buttcrack is all I see"?

4 out of 5 stars Dumb and Dumber Soundtrack.......2005-11-07

I bought this CD in '97 or '98 at a used music store. I really love the song "The Sons with Bret Reilly - Too Much Of A Good Thing". That song right there makes the whole album, such a relaxing thought-provoking song. The rest of the album's songs aren't really my musical style but is still respectable and entertaining because it came from such a cool and funny movie!

4 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks ever........2005-09-28

I got this soundtrack as a gift shortly after the movie came out which is almost ten years ago. I found it in my room last week while i was sorting out my stuff and I immedietly put it in my stereo and thought about recommending it to other people on amazon.

The movie kicked ass, alsmost everyone I know still has this cd, or has once owned a copy of it and they all know and love all the songs. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good all around cd, most songs are good, not the type of songs that you easily get bored with after a while. Even the one, or two songs that I don't really like are bearable.

5 out of 5 stars Radio? Who Needs a Radio? Ready, Harry?..........2005-07-22

This is my favorite soundtrack of all time. I know many people are frustrated about the fact that not all of the songs from the movie are on this cd. So what? On its own this is a terrific compilation! The cd captures the spirit of the movie while making a perfect companion for the road. You may enjoy this cd more while you're driving around, it seems tailor-made for it. This is more for fans of soft-to-medium rock, as well as early 90s music. There are a few off-kilter yet enjoyable songs, such as Willi One Blood's "Whiney Whiney" and the Crash Test Dummies' "Hurdy Gurdy Man". Half of the tracks are also remakes of older tunes, such as the Proclaimers' "Get Ready", and all do justice to the originals. Great music...Check it out!

There's nothing accidental about Dumb Luck, the latest project from Jimmy Tamborello (The Postal Service, Figurines). True, the record's fractured electronics always seem serendipitous, this close to collapsing completely, and held together by dental floss. But that feeling results from the meticulous and deliberate way Tamborello handles those bursts of splintered sound, and his ability to elevate just the right snippet or melodic string to provide a toehold for the listener. The contributions of guest vocalists help out more than a little as well; on "To A Fault," Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste floats his wandering tenor between interludes of ecstatic noise, while Jenny Lewis grounds "Roll On" in a gentle country vibe. And then there's "Rock My Boat," in which the electronics mostly take a backseat to Mia Doi Todd's delicate, pillow-soft tones. At its core however, the record is powered by Tamborello's arsenal of beats, scratches and sound effects. Against that ragged digitized background, every song sounds dense and interesting. But it's his skill with blending that experimentation into solidly structured and appealing tunes that makes the record special. If computers had hearts, Tamborello's messy laptop poetry could teach them how to fall in love. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

An album five years in the making, and Jimmy Tamborello's first for Sub Pop. Thick with his signature sampler finessing, warm electronic washes, and genius beat placement, "Dumb Luck" is an album lyrically as much about human distance as connection. Includes vocal contributions from Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Edward Droste (Grizzly Bear), Valerie Trebeljahr and Markus Acher (Lali Puna), Mia Doi Todd, Grant Olsen and Sonya Westcott (Arthur & Yu), Andrew Broder (Fog), Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), and Christopher and Jennifer Gunst (Mystic Chords Of Memory).

4 out of 5 stars Shocking album - very strange.......2007-05-15

As a huge fan of Dntel's other work, especially Life is Full of Possibilities, I about freaked out when I saw that a new album was out. It's taken me awhile to get an opinion on it.

At first, the lyrics kind of get in the way. It seemed too much of a vocal "hipster indie" album and that really pissed me off at first. However, I have tried really hard to get into this album because I just cannot give up on this guy. I've found that I actually really like this album, but for totally different reasons that I like the previous ones.

The melodic nature of this album still gets in the way at times, as I've always been more intrigued by his sampling/sequencing. This album, electronically, is phenominal. This guy thinks of stuff that is just mind boggling.

A lot of the vocalists I'm not crazy about (track #4) but to be able to pull this kind of stuff off - melodic vocals and guitar work along with the glitch, is actually pretty refreshing to hear and that's where I learned to love this album.

My favorite track is #6 - Rock my Boat, followed by #2, To a Fault. I'd say this because the vocals in these songs are more interesting/flow well with the concept of the album.

If anyone is just getting into this type of stuff and are more interested in the electronic aspect rather than the vocal indie-ness, I recommend checking out Lusine's "Iron City" or "Serial Hodgepodge", Mum's "Yesterday was Dramatic, Today is OK", or Fennesz's album "Venice" which actually has a really cool vocal track by David Sylvian. Check it out.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Starts for effort, but Dntel hasn't hit the high note........2007-04-29

I pre-ordered this album after listening to the "Dumb Luck" track. Thinking that the pure beauty of his voice and music was going to be throughout the album was abruptly interrupted by various artists that through me off from what I thought would have been a great album. In Dntel's first album "Life is Full of Possibilities", it was lacking vocal and direction, making that album sound mostly like background noise and incomplete tracks.

Now with the album, Dntel has invited various artists to join in this album which in my opinion kills this album and Dntels true image. Songs like "Roll on" shocked me to listen to since I don't see how a "country" sounded song fits in with Dntels image.

Personally, I found some songs enjoyable, but for the most part, Dntel needs to be SOLO with his work, including vocals. Dntel fans, listen the album first before

4 out of 5 stars It's dumb luck that got you here.......2007-04-24

Under the name of Dntel, Jimmy Tamborello has taken awhile making the follow-up to "Life is Full of Possibilities." Sometimes I doubted he'd get around to producing one.

But after six years, at last he has -- "Dumb Luck," a wobbling trippy little album, saturated with some of the top indie talents. The opening is rather weak, but the remaining songs are beautifully poignant and beautiful.

It opens with what sounds like a mellotron having a grand mal seizure. Tamborello croons, "Just don't forget/that it's dumb luck/that got you here/don't fool yourself/cause misfortune's waiting/for the best time to appear.... And no one remembers even one word that left your mouth/All the melodies were stolen from the songs by someone else..."

After it's liquefied your eardrums, the music thankfully smooths out into a sweeping Sigur-Rosian trip-epic, and switches again into a folky little tune augmented with snowy synth. And Tamborello continues ominously singing of the lack of creativity, soul and talent of his subject. All I could think of was certain MTV stars.

The songs that follow are more even -- trippling psychfolk, delicate windy blip-ballads, country songs over a layer of buzzing synth, jangling little ballads, trip-brass and soulful chorales, blurry rockers, and finally an exquisitely ethereal little ballad.

And the list of collaborators reads like an indie who's-who: Conor Oberst, Fog, Jenny Lewis, Grizzly Bear, the Mystic Chords of Memory, Lali Puna and Mia Doi Todd. All these are brilliantly and almost seamlessly made, except for "The Distance" with Arthur & Yu -- too jangly at times, but still listenable.

Tamborello weaves together these various styles with his own instrumentation -- there's some ringing electric guitars, softer acoustic ones, glitches, trombones and eerie sound effects. These are all wrapped in Tamborello's trembling synth, mellow tones and airy expansive sweeps of sound. Occasionally, he doesn't even contribute much, just pretties the edges of the melody.

The vocals are also quite nice -- none of them really match, but they match the music. Tamborello's is smooth and thoughtful, while some other highlights include Todd's soulful ballad, Daniel Rossen's folky warbling, and Oberst's quirky solo. The Mystic Chords and Lali Puna offer shifting, ethereal murmurs instead of solid vocals.

The main flaw? The collaborations dominate the entire album, and at times I found myself wishing for a pure Dntel song, without the influence of another band.

Dntel's second album is quite different from the first, especially with the cornucopia of guest collaborators. But "Dumb Luck" belies the message of the first song.

3 out of 5 stars Blurs the line that separates Dntel from Jimmy Tamborello's other projects........2007-04-10

It has been six years since Dntel last released a full-length album. Since that time, Jimmy Tamborello has undergone quite a transformation; from underground electro programmer to full-fledged indie pop god. Whether he was busy being one half of the uber-successful The Postal Service or putting out albums as James Figurine, Tamborello has found countless ways to stay busy. "Dumb Luck," the long-awaited follow up to 2001's "Life Is Full of Possibilities," sounds like an expected mixture of everything that Tamborello has accomplished over the last six years. In doing so, it largely abandons the sound that separated Dntel from Tamborello's numerous other projects.

The lead-off and title track, "Dumb Luck" features Tamborello's stylistically unflattering voice offering tidbits of self-pity such as, "Don't forget that it's dumb luck that got you here" or "you can't trust your friends, they will betray you." The song begins with the largely disjointed flutterings of Jimmy's production, but eventually collapses into a simple acoustic guitar with minimal electronic effects in the background. It is a decent song, but like most songs sung by Tamborello (i.e. James Figurine's 2006 album), the production value far outweighs the vocal performance.

In many ways, it feels as if "Dumb Luck" is less of a Dntel album and more of a "Jimmy Tamborello featuring All of His Friends" album. Aside from the title track, every song is sung by a guest performer. Some of these tracks work rather well, while others feel stale and generally unmemorable.

"To a Fault" featuring Grizzly Bear, for example, is a rater awesome track. Here, it actually sounds like a Dntel song should sound like, with minimal emphasis placed on vocals and more on everything else. As such, most of the song is comprised of evidence of Tamborello's unwavering skills as a producer/programmer and it stands out as one of the better songs on the album. On the contrary, "Roll On" is dominated by Jenny Lewis' trademark quasi-country voice and as a result the song sounds absolutely nothing like any other Dntel song to date. Like so many other songs on the album, it features the standard "verse/chorus/verse/chorus" setup. Tamborello's skills are entirely subdued here, and one has to wonder what even classifies this as Dntel and not James Figurine or The Postal Service (aside from the fact that that's what Tamborello says it is).

"Rock My Boat" featuring Mia Doi Todd, is a pretty good song that does a fantastic job of balancing the talents of both artists. Even if it's a bit clichéd to hear an artist sing, "You rock my boat," Mia Doi Todd does a fantastic job of complementing Tamborello's stellar song. Similarly, Andrew Broder offers up the best vocal performance of the album on "Natural Resources." At it's best moments, the song sounds like it could have been pulled right off of Radiohead's Kid A.

Arguably, the most notable vocalist on the album is Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes on "Breakfast In Bed." However, Oberst tones down his trademark emotionally wrought vocals and presents a completely uninspired melody, sounding almost exactly like another one of his songs, "Kathy With a Ks Song" (without the aforementioned emotion). Though his emotionally-vacant vocals actually blend rather well with Tamborello's song, one can't help be disappointed by their absence.

Overall, Dntel's "Dumb Luck" should satisfy any fan of The Postal Service or James Figurine. However, Dntel fans who were expecting a revival of the artist's unrivaled sound from previous albums might be a little disappointed. Personally, though I enjoy this album a lot, I can't help but feel a bit cheated. I am a huge Dntel fan, and this album offers nothing that would even suggest that this is the same Tamborello moniker. If the artist insists on using multiple monikers to promote his music, he should do a better job of defining each one. "Dumb Luck," though good, sounds absolutely nothing previous Dntel albums, and more like everything else Tamborello has done in recent years...for better or for worse.

Recommended for fans of The Postal Service, James Figurine, or any of the artists who lend their vocals to this album.

5 out of 5 stars Great album often overlooked.......2005-01-14

In commercial terms, Waylon was past his sell-by date, but his music was as good as ever in the early nineties, as this album proves.

The opening track (Just talking) reflects on politics and marriage in the modern world. Silent partners (a song later covered by George Jones) is about a couple who love each other but both are afraid to say anything in case they spoil it all. Didn't we shine is about a former couple meeting up again and remembering how great they were together although ultimately they went their separate ways. In the slightly amusing title track, Waylon explains that he doesn't belong in New York or Los Angeles, but that there is somewhere in between where he feels comfortable. He doesn't say where but all his fans know.

Armed and dangerous is actually about a man determined to win the heart of a woman. Heartaches older than you is about an older man explaining to a younger woman that he only wants her love if she's serious. Hank Williams syndrome reflects on the state of contemporary country music. A lot of good finds Waylon reflecting on a woman who has left him because he didn't say sorry. Waylon confesses that he's not perfect in I've got my faults. In Smokey on your front doo, Waylon discusses another man's problem in trying to please two women.

This is a great album from Waylon, the songs reflecting the benefit (or otherwise) of life's experiences. All true Waylon fans will appreciate this album. Of course it doesn't contain any big hits but American country radio stations had decided they didn't want to play his music any more, however good it might be.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon Continues His 1990's Artistic Revival.......2004-12-18

Waylon may not have been on the charts in the 1990s, but artistically he was still as strong as ever. In my opinion his Nineties stuff is some of the best music he made, and his second solo album of the decade, 1992's "Too Dumb for NYC" is proof of that. If he had recorded this album in 1982 it would have gone platinum and spun off 4 or 5 top ten singles. As it is, it may be a little known album, but it is a gem that is well worth listening to. Highly recommended.

Album Description

The fifth installment in the Other Side series features the critically acclaimed rapper/producer Madlib on the mix CD and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf `s visual guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds on DVD. Madlib's diverse audio tour includes tracks from the eclectic/outrageous jazz consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib) and an exlusive track "Infinity". Hailing from the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. His expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects. After hooking up with Los Angeles DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib did a lot of production for Wolf's Stones Throw label. In 1999 the label released Quasimoto's astonishing The Unseen LP. Doubling as himself and his alter ego Quasimoto, Madlib handled vocals and production duties on the album, a huge critical success. With each year Madlib has continued to expand his abilities beyond the core hip hop that he is known for and The Other Side - Los Angeles proves the point again.

2 out of 5 stars Good CD, BAD DVD - I paid to watch adverts?.......2007-06-10

The DVD included with this item is just boring blatant advertising. You just watch PBW walk in and out of each shop doing mundane things and asking pointless questions to the owners/staff; but not before he makes sure you know the name of the shop and its website and street address etc.

The CD on the other hand is quite good. There were no tracks which I disliked. A great assorment of tracks from Jazz, Regae, Hip-Hop, Funk and Blues, the last track escpecially by the Freestyle Fellowship is sweet as.

I would recommend buying the soundtrack, but steer clear of the DVD unless you want to watch 60 mins of advertisments.

3 out of 5 stars Lacks the Blondie spark.......2007-07-22

This album offers little of the Blondie magic. There are very few catchy hooks with the pop spark that made the band's songs so special. Most of the tracks are mid tempo ballads but the songs don't really stay with the listener.

Sweet and Low is loosely based on the lyrics of the hymn Swing Low Sweet Chariot, He Is So is a mildly pleasant pop ballad as is Brite Side. Bugeye starts out promising a rock approach but then goes nowhere in its tunelessness.

The long track End Of The Run consists mostly of spoken word parts alternating with some singing. I Want That Man is a welcome exception, a tuneful guitar-driven interlude with some poetic lyrics approaching Blondie at its best whilst Lovelight, another rock number, offers a certain atmospheric charm.

There are some nice instrumental flourishes on Kiss It Better. Besides I Want That Man, my other favorites are Maybe For Sure which has some rousing singing and a good melody and Calmarie with its tribal rhythms. This is not by any means a bad album but I have been spoilt by the power pop of Blondie and therefore expected better.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on Debbie!.......2007-01-27

This is definitely the best Debbie Harry solo album, and it easily earns its five stars! I decided to buy it after I heard "I Want That Man." Besides the singles, it has all different types of music, much like the Blondie albums, and that is what makes it so enjoyable to listen to. There are songs like "Bike Boy," "Comic Books," and "Forced to Live" that sound like they could have come straight from an early Blondie album. Then, there are those that sound more mainstream like "I Want That Man" and "Kiss It Better." "Calmarie" is a bit of an unusual song, but it has a nice sound to it. "Brite Side" and "End of the Run" are slower songs, but they are also pleasant to listen to. Whether you are a fan or Blondie or just Debbie Harry, this album is certainly a must-have!

5 out of 5 stars Like Eat to the Beat ten years later.......2006-11-08

I can still flashback to 17 years ago this week when this release was reaching it's peak position of #123 on the Billboard Album charts. It spent a total of eight weeks on the charts and Debbie was touring the U.S. to promote the album. I had the pleasue of seeing her live in New York City. Harry did an amazing show with all the Blondie classics, but she also thankfully included most of the songs from this wonderful collection. I consider this one to be Debbie's lost masterpiece, and definitely the one that stands out among all her solo efforts. I'm sure Def, Dumb, & Blonde would have garnished more attention had it included the Blondie name because the songs resemble the Blondie sound and capture the roots of diversity that Harry made so acceptable in pop music. Most of these songs are creations of Harry and former Blondie guitarist Chris Stein. Harry even told Rolling Stone in 1989 that one of the songs, "Maybe For Sure," was actually written during the height of Blondie's success. Former Blondie producer Mike Chapman also produced most of these tracks. The songs not produced by Chapman also hold up amazingly well, including "Kiss it Better," a great dance number and one of the two songs that was produced by the Thompson Twins, but rather than go through each song in detail, I encourage all fans of Blondie to invest in this CD and enjoy an era when this blonde bombshell was living a truly progressive period as an artist.

5 out of 5 stars Yeah. The other reviewers are right. This one rocks........2006-02-15

I've had this album since it's original release and I'd have to say it's on my desert island top 5. All these years later it still endures. Something about the writing and production gelled in a way that ended up with a final product that truly deserves attention. How this brilliant little gem slipped under the radar is a mystery. This "solo" effort actually represents the true "Best" of Blondie (given that Debbie & Chris represent the heart of the band). Def, Dumb & Blonde is as solid as Eat To The Beat. For fans of the Blondie sound who haven't heard this yet, you're in for a rare treat.

5 out of 5 stars THIS ALBUM IS TRUELY NOT DEF AND DUMB BUT IS BLONDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-11

this is Debbie in a fine voice (though her voice has always and is still the Best in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
its not hard to believe she is 45 years old making this album.
(i got Debravation before this album) every song on here is magical! This Country i Call home Made a mistake overlooking this album!!!!!!!!!!
these will eventually run out of stock! so order before they dissappear for ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Loads of content and music for your money........2007-04-06

The previous Time Out releases featured continuous mixes by the listed DJ (including a great techno mix by Black Strobe on Time Out Paris) with a double sided, dual disc and the DVD features on the flipside. The latest installment, Berlin, sadly only features a tracklisting compiled by Ellen, as I was very disappointed to realize the tracks were not DJ mixed. It's also quite odd, as some tracks continuously play into the next (kind of a soft mix into one another), but others stop prior to the next one starting. Most tracks play out for their entire durations. We will still get two DJ mixes from Ellen this year: the 4th installment in her BoogyBytes mix series (as Modeselektor is about to release the 3rd), and a mix for Fabric.

Aside from my disappointment of it not being a full DJ mix, Allien has compiled a list of some very good techno goodies, including two of the most popular tech house/minimal tracks of 2006, Âme's Rej and Booka Shade's In White Rooms. There is also a stunning Carl Craig remix of Rhythm & Sound's Poor People Must Work. Ellen has ecclectic taste in music, and this one is no different, as she adds a punk track, and one classic rock song that is actually sung in German by David Bowie.

The DVD portion really impressed me, as it surpasses the others in this series (Time Out Paris was only 24 minutes total), and they have gone to a separate disc and added much more content. It is also chock full of more techno and IDM tracks that are not on the CD portion. It starts off with a very well produced 48 minute documentary hosted by the übercute Ellen, who takes us shopping for clothes and records, and hangs out with other electronic artists like Modeselektor, Seth Hodder, and even Richie Hawtin, who all chat briefly on camera. She mostly speaks English, but some portions are subtitled when she speaks German. On top of that, the background music is full of tracks from Ellen's own current and back catalog, which makes this a well rounded 48 minute tour full of great sights and sounds.

The DVD still has more to come, with segments ranging from 8 to 27 minutes, concetrating on shopping, food, clubs, accomodations, and other miscellaneous sites in and around Berlin. And all this set to even more juicy techno tracks, that I believe are mostly from Ellen's BPitch Control label. It's just the music playing, with informational text at the bottom as they visit many locations. I wish they provided a tracklisting! There is a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes of video footage, between these segments and Ellen's portion, all set to the best musical background one could ever want for a documentary!

This is a great purchase, and could have been a truly overwhelming release, had it just had a full DJ mix by Ellen on the CD, but what we do have is an incredible amount of techno music and one very well produced DVD video on Berlin.

Big Dumb Face has created a big, dumb record--intentionally so. Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland's side project is so self-indulgent it's almost endearing. Almost. From the GWAR-meets-Cannibal Corpse death-metal attack of "Burgalveist" to the "Bonanza"-theme feel of "Duke Lion" to the Martian-style vocals of "Kali is the Sweet Hog," Borland, who apparently plays all the CD's instruments, is goofy rather than clever. While vaguely reminiscent of a side project from Primus bassist/musical genius Les Claypool or something from Mr. Bungle, Big Dumb Face lacks stellar musicianship or redeeming moments of brilliance or true humor. Yet it's also quite clear Borland intends this to be merely an amusing, wacked-out aural freak-out--the disc ends with a nearly 20-minute oddball opus featuring lengthy moments of nothing but doors opening or footsteps, and, at minute 11, a really bad drum solo. While Bizkit fans may eat this up, to quote Spinal Tap, "There's a fine line between clever and stupid," and Big Dumb Face falls squarely on the stupid side. --Katherine Turman

What else is there to say.

This album is a joke. The only reason Wes put this out was to prove a point:

If I drop a duece into a cd case and put my name on it, it will sell.

And well the points been prov'n

    5 out of 5 stars ooh-bla-gawd-ah-bah.......2005-11-01

I got this CD and it is pure sweetness. If you go to the BigDumbFace sight in interviews and read what guitar world said in Wes's 60 minutes, that really hits the nail on the head. There are so many layers to this CD that it is like a music supercomputer program ready to be sprang on the unsuspecting public. In a nutshell, there are three types of songs on here-insane awesome and strangely enough non-redudntant death metal that lyrically pokes fun at the "im more advanced than anyone else right now" mentality that death metal bands have, rock electronic-new wave songs, straight up new wave songs, and country tinged songs. Organ Splitter and Burglaveist boast head pounding double bass and guitar riffs that are pretty cool but masked under synths of some sorts. The song structures and the individual parts themselves are really cool and really different compared to the 99.9% of death metal that is completely stupid and stale. The more new-wave-y songs like Might P***s lazer and Kali is the Sweethog are really funny lyrically and are and have lots of cool sonic goodies and ear candy. Every song on this CD is really good, and more importantly, really different from one another. I love how Wes just takes jab after jab at the three big things today-Death Meta, New Wave, and Country. Rebel is such a great stab at the "ya'll wanna faight?" mentality that certian southereners have that have unfortunately become the sterotype of the southern man, but Wes isn't outright calling all southerners renecks-after all, him and the rest of LB are from the south.

and by the way, Wes (along with Josh Freese on drums ill betcha a squillion dollars its him behind the kid) recorded a new Big Dumb Face song last last year that is absolutely incredible. It is called Darkness Becomes and is available in one of the 13 or so news posts on his Wes.Borland.net but NOT ON THIS CD OR ANY OTHER CD OUT THERE-IT IS AVAILABLE AS LEGAL AS WELL AS FREE DOWNLOAD ONLY!!!

DOWNLOAD IT!!!!!1 holy hell!!! This song is an 8 minute speed metal freakout with arguably Wes's best playing it. You get it all in that song-the awesome acoustic opener, the huge monsterous thrash metal riffs, this insane and unstable solo, more insane riffs, a bass breakdown, a piano/hooror movie sample breakdown, another insane solo that is almost Petrucci-like and has Wes going nuts with shred-arpeggios and ends in a brilliant whammy bar/note bend that is such an incredibly climactic ending to the solo.(to offset the first solo that resembles faux satanic metal weiners slayer). Then it goes back into the thrash metal and groove metal riffs to finish the song off. It is without a doubt one of the top 5 best songs in Thrash metal (even tho Wes's vox are pro-toolsed way low to make fun of/imitate the death metal voice) and if you are the kind of person who can listen to a song way beyond the singing like myself then youll love it.

All in all, BDF is awesome insane headphone music that makes fun of every lame genre that is big today (except whatever you would classify Outkast's "hey ya" as, or then again, maybe it does that too in Kali is the Sweethod. hmmm) This is great funny music that is made really well and the CD is REALLY diverse. None of the songs sound like repeats of prior or upcoming ones and it is just sweet.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!!!beautifully weird! lol.......2005-06-30

(you have to be a wes fan to like this album)
being a limp bizkit fan, and a wes borland fan i was expecting this album to be very heavy, and with human vocals (lol) < it is without a doubt a very weird album, but it was only meant to be a joke album.
I can not recomend this album to anyone unless you are a wes borland fan.
this CD takes a very long time to grow on you.
the vocals in this cd are very unusual because wes borland sings with a weird alien like voice throughout the album.
this CD is like watching a cheezy sciencefiction movie on tv, but it's more of an artistic/experimental album.
the best song on this cd is "right in here" because it's the first song on the CD that actually has limp bizkit like guitar.
i was realy expecting a "Boiler"(

    5 out of 5 stars Strangely Wonderful.......2005-02-19

I can never seem to recommend this ablum to people without sounding really, really stupid. Which is truly sad, because this album deserves to be listened to. To me, it is without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable album's I've ever heard. I never really enjoyed limp bizkit, other than their early stage performances, I just can't seem to get into the whole, rap-metal thing. I think it's sad that many people who wanted to hear this album, desired to do so because of their admiration for limp bizkit, with is almost a guarantee they would hate it. This is more for people who enjoy music that requires a basic knowledge of how music is created, and can appreciate not only the music as a whole, but also each individual part that is required to create it. It is definitely strange, and if you try to take it too seriously you will, without a doubt, be completely lost to it's purpose. Some will say what purpose could this cd possibly have? To that I could have only one answer - to entertain - and it should be the answer to that question when asked about any cd, but sadly that can no longer be said about much of todays music, that is clearly only created to make a profit. I don't necessairly have a problem with music created for profit, some of it still has the side effect of being entertaining, I just think it's sad that a cd like Duke Lion Fights The Terror! will go so largely unappreciated and it's pure entertainment value will be unrecognized to the majority of the world.

5 out of 5 stars This album is very.... Borland........2005-02-04

It's nice to see Wes come out with perhaps one of my favorite albums of all time. Wes may not be the best guitarist around, but he is one of the few guitarists with 'natural talent' per se. A real artist -- Not technical, just amazingly creative, and that's what makes him so awesome and respectable. Limp Bizkit may have been a bad band, but Borland stood out and made them worthwhile.

This album seems to have been inspired by Ween, and I'm sure Wes wouldn't deny that. It's different, though -- It's unique, and not an imitation. It's really a nice hurrah for the 'fun' genre of music.

Varying from novelty deathmetal tracks that are sexual innuendo's, and munchkin-voiced experimental tracks with witty, and sometimes silly lyrics, there's really nothing about this album to dislike.

Of course, the main reason I adore this album is because it's weird -- Weird in a lovable, giggly, creative way. As 'dumb' as this album may be, it's really artsy when you come down to it!

Of course, for all the reasons I love this CD, there's someone whom hates the CD for all those same reasons. Some people don't like things to be too unfamiliar, and while that's understandable, they're also the same people whom rate down this album.

I digress, though -- To each their own, right? If you like to have fun in a childish, lighthearted way, this album will probably have a special spot in your CD collection.

You know I have many fond memories of this album. Especially, my brothers and I running around the living room to Beep, Beep. However, that song in particular is not the orignal version and the new one is terrible. You can almost make out the original playing behind some guy ranting about his new Cadilac. Which adds nothing to the orignal song.

Songs I thought could tell were originals - Purple People Eater, Charlie Brown, Here comes the Judge, The Jolly Green Giant and Mr. Custer.

The original was The Playmates, "Beep Beep". I should have been more careful. Use the titles to look up the original artists and buy them elsewhere.
