A by-the-numbers, chronological collection that hits all the commercial highlights of the Drifters' Golden Era (1959-64)--after the frequently dazzling early records with Clyde McPhatter, but featuring the consummate vocal stylings of Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, and more on 16 memorable hits. Among the pinnacles: "There Goes My Baby," the record whose unsettling, soaring strings launched the soul era; the romantic perfection of "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," and the contagiously catchy, Latin-bouncing "Sweets for My Sweet;" and the eternally evocative cityscapes of "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk," and the stark, gritty "On Broadway." Sleepers include the heartrending Bacharach ballad "Please Stay," "I Count the Tears" (ripped off later on the Grass Roots hit "Let's Live for Today"), and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling," on which strings foreshadow the folk-rock movement. An ideal starter kit on these seminal uptown soul pioneers; those seeking further revelations (and there are plenty of them) are referred to Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box. --Ken Barnes

Absolutely Beautiful Music.......2007-08-01
As far as I'm concerned songs numbered 1, 4, 5, 11, 12, and 14 are, in themselves, enough to make this CD a bargain for the listed price. Anything else you may like is an added bonus. Great voices and great music to play over and over again.
GOOD SONGS AND VALUE.......2007-01-12
this cd has a good sound and variety of their greatest hits. you must be a drifter's fan to enjoy this one.
Excellent compilation but not remastered.......2006-09-20
The sound is excellent but this is not a remastered compilation as some reviewers have claimed. It is an AAD recording made from the original singles masters.
The joy of being 'up on the roof '.......2006-06-12
The Drifters have a number of very good songs, including 'Under the Boardwalk' and 'Broadway'.But they have, and this is the reason I am writing this review one of the greatest of all songs of their time, the incredible 'Upon the Roof'.
This song is one which simply lifts the spirit up in tremendous joy. And it is one of those songs which can be heard over and over again without ever seeming to lose its freshness.
All mono recordings.......2006-04-10
I was quite disappointed with this CD and Ben E King's " The Best
Of" because both are mono records. Except when I heard the songs
back then on the radio, on most LP's- released in the 60's-
all of their recordings were in full stereo. The songs are
great, no doubt, but should I have known this before I would
have chosen other "greatest hits" compilations in stereo.

Best Ben E King compilation by far!.......2007-06-17
Here we have all the hits + the 3 big Drifters' hits when Ben was their
leadsinger. After the first Drifters success Ben received a ridiculous
500 $ "salary" and he decided he'd better be off by himself. Before
leaving in 1960 he recorded 3 more songs as leader of the Drifters
that became huge hits (Save the Last Dance, I Count the Tears and This
Magic Moment)Then as a solo singer he recorded Stand By Me in 1961 and
the rest is history. This song is considered as one of the greatest
in music history. The reason why I consider this the best compilation
ever is because of the sound quality. All songs are in full stereo and
I just don't understand why other Drifters and Ben E King compilations
are rather bad mono recordings. Hearing all these wonderful hits in
full stereo make the other compilations worthless.
Highly recommendable!
Good Stuff.......2007-05-13
Early Rock And Roll with a mix of Blues good stuff for the ears
Ex-Drifters lead singer made great solo music.......2005-03-30
Born Benjamin Earl Nelson but known as Ben E King by the time he achieved fame as lead singer of the Drifters, Ben did not have many big solo hits but he nevertheless made an important contribution to popular music.
This compilation includes three of his American hits as lead singer of the Drifters. All three are brilliant but the most famous is Save the last dance for me, which has been recorded by a multitude of singers in several different styles of music. It has also been translated into several languages and many great covers have been recorded in France, Germany and elsewhere.
Following the success of Save the last dance for me, Ben opted for a solo career. He had fewer hits as a solo artist than his former group had without him, but Stand by me (later to become the theme song of an eighties movie) ensures his place in pop music history as a solo singer, while his other great solo records include Spanish Harlem, Amor, Don't play that song and I who have nothing. Ben made a brief comeback in the American charts with Supernatural thing in the mid-seventies.
Ben's first (minor) UK hit, First taste of love, is also included, together with his covers of such classics as Dream lover, Moon river, It's all in the game, On the street where you live and Will you love me tomorrow.
This is a fine compilation that contains all the important solo tracks from Ben's career, plus three Drifters tracks.
Good but Routine.......2004-10-02
There are clearly some memorable songs on this CD but there are at least 6 tunes that are "covers" and were done originally by other artists whom you think of when you hear them. Try the CD, "Very Best of Ben E. King". Those songs belong only to him.
What a sound!!.......2000-09-19
I have long been a Drifters fan and admired Ben E. King when he was their lead singer; but I never really appreciated his talents until I heard this album. Ben E. King is truly a soulful singer, and many of the songs on this album will have you wondering why he hasn't been more appreciated. If you like Jerry Butler, the Drifters, Jackie Wilson or Clyde McPhatter, then you will have to like this album. Wish I had found it years ago!!

*the* Christmas album.......2006-12-30
I have heard "Somewhere in my Memory" playing in malls. This is damn good. He does Christmas well, as you'll know if you've seen/heard the first two Harry Potter movies. Perhaps the most outstanding track is "Setting the Trap", which plays over a heavy '80's beat that's as much fun as it is in 'Phantom of the Opera' and somehow remains Christmas-y with the intelligent weaving of themes around and around. Eventually we come to a wonderful fugue section that starts off the finale. Truly a brilliant piece. "Star of Bethlehem" is a song I grew up considering standard Christmas repertoire, when in fact it was written for this movie. There is also a sly theme for the movie's villians, often on bass clarinet and piccolo, along with other delightful motifs. True, some of the tracks are little more than sparsely orchestrated accents of what is happening onscreen and tend to drag, but all in all, this is a must have for anybody who ever enjoyed 'Home Alone' or Christmas.
Wonderful Williams.......2006-07-01
A real holiday pleasure. The movie comes alive in your mind, seriously. John Williams rocks!
Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2005-09-08
Great product. Service was efficent and on time. Packaging was well thought out. Well done.
Williams is brilliant!.......2005-03-08
Rarely does a family holiday film impress an audience more than John Hughes' Home Alone. And it was sheer inspiration to bring the Academy Award-winning John Williams and Leslie Bricusse together for the soundtrack. With a style reminiscent of your standard classical scherzo (a musical joke), Williams' score lends incalculable support to a film packed with one comedy-action sequence after another. Even when the dust settles, a pervading musical giggle forces you to wonder what's next.
But, interspersed among the prestos and allegrettos, Williams waxes eloquent as the music touchingly slows to underscore Kevin's (Macaulay Culkin) longing for peace amid the Christmas chaos about him. A children's choir reflects Kevin's emotions as they sing Bricusse's classically-styled lyrics. A few popular vocals also sweeten the disc. With the likes of Mel Torme and The Drifters, the entire album is a symphony of holiday impressions, from the sublime to the sinister, and everything in between.
Great Christmas Music.......2004-07-23
Home Alone is a great Christmas tradition with great music. Enough said.

Album Description
Out of print in the U.S.! The history of rhythm & blues is filled with vocal groups whose names include the Orioles, Cadillacs, Crows, Flamingos, Moonglows, Coasters & Penguins which are all held in reverence by fanatics and devotes. The Drifters are part of an even more exclusive fraternity, as a group that managed to carve out a place for themselves in the R&B community and also define that music, not only at it's inception as a national chart phenomenon in the early 50's but also in the decade that followed. 'Golden Hits' features 12 hits including 'Dance With Me', There Goes My Baby', 'Saturday Night At The Movies', 'On Broadway', 'Under The Boardwalk' and 'Some Kind Of Wonderful'. Warner. 2005.

woof-wo............2007-02-13
THE DRIFTERS GOLDEN HITS was a dog in 1968, and it's still flea-bitten and barking almost 40 years later. One of the first-ever collections of vocal group "retreads," the versions here are inferior to the classic Drifters 50s ATLANTIC records tracks.
Try to find the originals! (1½ woofs)
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 29:41
THIS IS THE only DRIFTERS ALBUM - THE ONE THAT WE ALL GREW UP ON.......2006-12-20
JOHNNY MOORE sang: Under the Boardwalk, I've Got Sand in My Shoes, Saturday Night at the Movies.
RUDY LEWIS (d. 1964 of a heart attack, R.I.P.) sang: Some Kind of Wonderful, Up on the Roof, On Broadway.
JOHNNY LEE WILLIAMS sang: If You Cry (True Love, True Love).
BEN E. KING sang all the rest: There Goes My Baby, Dance With Me, This Magic Moment, Save the Last Dance for Me, I Count the Tears. PHEW!
(If he hadn't left, you could have added Spanish Harlem and Stand by Me to the list!)
These are the original recordings of the Drifter's greatest hits. This is one super album. We all grew up on this album.
If you totally didn't know what you were doing, and took a chance buying this album, you would be buying one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
This is just beautiful music that everyone from babies to grandparents love. If you don't like the Drifers (like Louis Armstrong), you ain't human!
GOLD.......2006-03-31
I am a sucker for anything by 'The Drifters';I don't believe they ever came out with a bad song. This compilation of their music from '59 to '64 is hard to beat, even as the lead singers changed from Ben E. King to Rudy Lewis to Johnny Moore.Listening to this,it's impossible not to be reminded how far popular music
has drifted-in the wrong direction.
The most affordable Drifters compilation........2005-05-23
Released in 1968, this set chronicled the golden era of the Drifters (1959-1964). This starts right off with the sound of the "new" Drifters with Ben E. King on lead: "There Goes My Baby"; timeless classic. Next "If You Cry" and "Dance With Me" a double-sided hit; both very nice, nice songs. I dig the string arrangements. The hits continue with "This Magic Moment" and
"Save The Last Dance For Me." "I Count The Tears" is one I always liked because of the "na-na-na-na-na late at night", and that's right; the Grass Roots copied that for "Let's Live For Today." Uh-uh. "Some Kind Of Wonderful" is some kind of gem; it hardly gets any attention. "Up On The Roof" and "On Broadway" feature Rudy Lewis on vocal and are ageless songs. "Under The Boardwalk" and the answer to it, "I've Got Sand In My Shoes" are really crafty and neat songs as well as "Saturday Night At The Movies" which I loved ever since I first heard it. Those three feature Johnny Moore. The Drifters were one of Atlantic Records best-selling groups and their songs are absolutely timeless and ageless never seeming to grow old. They sort of transport you to another place where you can escape the outside world. The Rhino compilation is the best alternative for this one because of track number and sound quality. Yes, this one is pretty short but the sound is quite good actually and a lot of songs are in stereo. If you're an original album collector liking to collect CD versions of old LPs, this is a definitive set.
Uh.......2004-11-27
The review right below this one is the one you should pay attention to; the guy complaining about the short running time and "acoustic versions" is, uh, high. As you probably already know if you're looking at this page, "Stand By Me" isn't even a Drifters song...Ben E. King did that one solo.
This is a very nice collection that really includes all of what the Drifters had to offer...they existed in the later years of the "hit single" era, pre-album rock, and all their best singles are definitely included here. I owned this hits collection on vinyl before I got it on disc, and I've always really loved it for what it is: a nice portrait of a truly groundbreaking, genre-bending early 60s R&B act.

Up on the roof .......2007-01-05
It is difficult to describe the kind of sheer joy and sense of freedom which comes from listening to one song here 'Up on the Roof'. I believe it to be one of the greatest of all pop songs and one which most perfectly expresses that desire to in pure kind of joy , a freedom in joy which comes most naturally in youth.
It is one of the songs which have stayed with me all through the years, and gives pleasure to this day.
There are other fine pieces here, including ' On Broadway' but being up on the roof with the Drifters is as high in my opinion as pop music can go.
The DriftersTunes We Most Remember.......2004-10-02
This is the one, folks! Although Clyde McPhatter made some memorable songs in the early '50s as lead singer for the Drifters (songs later covered successfully by other name artists), the Drifters we most remember had Ben E. King or one of the seven others (count them) who followed him as lead singer. They are all in this compilation. Everybody has a favorite of these; although I like all the "A" sides (and many of the B's), I have always been fond of "Please Stay" (Don't Go) which is virtually never played on the radio. Today many of the Drifters are gone and various groups travel the country singing their songs (sometimes alternately appearing as The Coasters). If you want the real deal, though, this is it. By the way, in case you didn't know, Ben E. King "left" the group because the other members of the group failed to show up for a recording session and his product was released under his name only. Do you remember the name of it?
All the Drifters hits from 1959 to 1965 - and much more.......2002-10-07
The Drifters were onne of those groups that went through a lot of line-up changes, so let's first clear up any confusion first. There was a group with that name before 1959 - it feautured Clyde McPhatter and recorded some wonderful R+B, some of which is available on other CD's. That group was disbanded, and a totally different group was given the Drifters name. It is that line-up, featuring Ben E King, that opens this collection (which is presented in chronological order). Ben left after Save the last dance for me to pursue a solo career. His solo hits are not included in this collection, which is why Spanish Harlem and Stand by me are missing. You can obtain these recordings on Ben's own albums, although I've also seen Drifters compilations which include Ben's solo hits.
So, what you get here are forty of the finest tracks from their best period, including Save the last dance for me, There goes my baby, Dance with me, On Broadway, Some kind of wonderful, One way love, Up on the roof, Under the boardwalk, Saturday night at the movies, When my little girl is smiling, Sweets for my sweet and others - all huge American hits. Only Save the last dance for me was a big hit in Britain for the Drifters, because record companies at that time often found local singers to cover the songs and they had the hits instead. This shameful practice died out by the end of the sixties.
Even with all their hits included, there is plenty of room to explore their B-sides and album tracks. All the ones included here are excellent, but my favorite is their cover of Stranger on the shore, an extremely sad song which which was a huge instrumental hit for clarinetist Acker Bilk. Many vocal versions of this song exist, but the Drifters sing it as well as anybody.
After 1965 (which marks the end of this compilation), the Drifters didn't have much success in America, but they enjoyed a new wave of popularity in the seventies in Britain, where they had several top ten hits. Even as a Brit, I prefer their sixties music, but anybody interested in their seventies music should seek out a British compilation.
Excellent collection of timeless Pop & R&B songs.......2002-07-27
Together with Elvis Presley, Phil Spector's bands, The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Dusty Springfield, The Beach Boys, some from Motown, Brenda Lee, The Rolling Stones or Tina Turner among others, The Drifters have also written their page in Rock'n'Roll history, a fact that I don't realise whether it has been some time acknowledged.
The legendary group recorded songs that are today timeless pop or R&B classics; Save The Last Dance For Me, Dance With Me, Sweets For My Sweet, Some Kind Of Wonderful, When My Little Girl is Smiling, On Broadway, my personal best favourites: Up On The Roof, At The Club, Under the Boardwalk, and This Magic Moment, are only some gems of their musical legacy. They have been covered by dozens of artists and they still continue to be covered by others.
The Drifters' choice of songs and songwriters were exemplary: Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, Bacharach, Hilliard, David, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Bert Russell, Jerry Ragovoy, Goffin/King, Kenny Young, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, almost all the best of the 60s.
A must-have for those who love 60's music, for collectors and also for those who feel curious about all the richness and beauty the music of that time gave the world.

Drifters.......2007-01-21
I'm not a huge fan of this era as it was before my time but I wanted to get a Drifter's collection because I admire their talant and contribution to R&B. It is a great collection of tunes and is well worth the price, but not something I would listen to on a daily basis. I know that many of these tunes were recorded more than once and some appear on many albums. I love the recording of 'White Christmas' included on this CD and its one of the few that Clyde's vocal isn't the featured voice.
Twenty-Eight Tunes - Includes The Drifters' White Christmas Classic!.......2005-12-25
This collection includes the wonderful, classic, Doo-Wop recording of White Christmas by The Drifters! Twenty-eight tunes is quite a deal, but that one track is worth the price of the CD!!!
THIS IS THE DRIFTERS.......2002-11-15
If you really want to hear the Drifters at their best, then you want to listen to Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters. And this CD --"Rockin' & Driftin'~ The Drifters" will blow you away!
A great doo-wop CD featuring Clyde McPhatter........1999-09-03
I purchased this CD because I collect all of Clyde McPhatter's work. It is an excellent CD. I do not believe there has ever been a voice as emotional and passionate as Clyde McPhatter. His ability to go up and down the musical scale is awesome.
The Original Drifters.......1998-09-30
If you are a person that likes the "original" sounds of R&B and 50's Rock'n Roll, this CD is a real lesson in music. The best cut is the Leiber/Stoller classic "Fools Fall In Love" with the fabulous voice of Johnny Moore singing lead. "Seven Days" and "Money Honey" feature Clyde McPhatter up front. 1958's "Moonlight Bay" (only released on one other cd.) and "Drip Drop" feature the lead voice of Bobby Hendricks. All in all this is a small, but good compilation. It's worth the buy.

Two Great Albums.......2006-04-22
This has most of the Drifters greatest hits- Up On The Roof, Save The Last Dance For Me, There Goes My Baby, Under The Boardwalk, and On Broadway. Plus all but 3 songs are in stereo, and it has the mono and stereo versions of Up On The Roof (my favorite Drifters song). This is great- and is cheap.
THE DRIFTERS AT THEIR ABSOLUTE BEST ........2005-11-08

HAVEN'T RECEIVED IT.......2005-10-02
I have not yet received this CD, as I have not received the "For Love Of Ivy" DVD.
Has the "right" version, 45pm of Up on the Roof.......2004-01-17
For a young guy who listens to the likes of Midnight Oil, Nirvana, and Outkast among others, take it from me, this is music at its best. Not a real fan of "oldies" music, but there's just something about the Drifters. I was first introduced to this fantastic group through the PBS show Reading Rainbow some 10 yrs ago. The song played was Up on the Roof, and i just couldn't get it out of my head. In fact, I was so enamored by this one song, that I rushed to the music store(this was before the MP3 revolution, so I actually bought a few cds back then) to purchase the first Drifters cd that contained it. Unfortunately, the song on the cd was a different verison than what I had heard on the TV(now u know why I love Mp3s). Don't worry though, this cd has the "better" version of Up on the Roof. And you want to know what? Golly gee Wally, I went ahead and bought it! Thanks Drifters!
The Drifters!.......2001-01-21
I think this si a great cd! The Drifters are very talented. Their talent is displayed on this album. I love Under the Boardwalk, Up on the Roof, and On Broadway! These are songs that I grew up on.

Vocal groups and styles came and went from the 1950s through the 1980s, but somehow the Drifters evolved and persevered, spanning doo-wop and disco before being relegated exclusively to the oldies touring circuit. Rockin' & Driftin' collects highlights from the group's embryonic Clyde McPhatter-led era (beginning with 1953's "Money Honey") into the mid-'70s, when the group still had some standing in the U.K. "On Broadway," "There Goes My Baby," "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk"--they're all included in this handsome, thoroughly annotated three-disc box set. All told, there are 79 selections here; the 16-song Very Best of the Drifters is a viable option for more casual fans interested in a selection of '59 to '64 smashes. More thorough-minded fans of vocal groups will find that Rockin' & Driftin' satisfies their hunger for Drifters nuggets great and small. --Steven Stolder

Drift no more-- you've found it!.......2007-02-23
The 48-page illustrated and oversized book that comes with ROCKIN' & DRIFTIN' * THE DRIFTERS BOX is stapled to the spine of this durable heavy plastic fold-open album. Chockful of photos, bios and song details, it's very well written and layed out.
The three CDs of music here are pure delight-- all these great sounding transfers are original tracks that cover the best years of this seminal vocal group's career-- well before they were relegated to the rock & roll revival circuit, and to cranking out album after album of inferior re-recordings. This is the motherlode, folks-- the great ATCO and ATLANTIC sides that all fans of this group want. Buy with confidence!

FABULOUS!!!!.......2005-08-02
This box is a MUST for anyone with a collection of 50s and 60s music. Some of the greatest voices in early R&B and Rock & Roll are showcased here... Clyde McPhatter, Johnnie Moore, Ben E. King.....and along with their well known hits like Under the Boardwalk and Save the Last Dance For Me. you'll find some terrific gems you may have never heard before......He's Just a Playboy, Memories are Made of This. Absolutely fabulous!!
What a Collection!.......2005-06-09
This package of Drifters tunes may seem a little pricey but it covers the hits from the Clyde McPhatter days when fellow lead singer (and soundalike) Johnny Moore was first with the group. (He was to leave and return later). Their "Ruby Baby" and "Drip Drop" were later covered well by Dion in his solo career. "Such a Night" was covered well by Elvis Presley but this is the original. Even an unheralded B side from 1961, "Lonely Winds", is included. You have the original "This Magic Moment" later covered by Jay and the Americans. Bobby Hendricks before a solo career contributes too. And later lead singer Rudy Lewis who became an early casualty of drugs stands out on "On Broadway". This package covers all of the group's American hits, although they extended their career in England into the 70s. If you're a true collector, this is the one you'll likely want.
An excellent Drifters complilation........2005-02-05
Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box is an excellent overview of the Drifters long recording history. The quality of the recordings is first rate (as usual with Rhino). The first 2 discs are fantastic but the third disc falters as it documents the rather sad tail end of the career of the Drifters after the death of the great Rudy Lewis. The booklet that accompanies this set is very good and does a marvelous job tracking down the many artists who recorded under the Drifters name over the years.
Rockin & Driftin - with 6 leads.......2002-12-22
This is the CD I have been looking for for a while. With Clyde delivering Money Honey, Bobby drilling out Drip Drop, Johnny Moore riveting out Ruby Baby, Ben melodically phrasing There Goes My Baby, Johnny Williams pleading (If You Cry) True Love, True Love, Rudy On Broadway, and many other hits, you get in my opinion the best of all the Drifters, and some of Ben's and Clyde's solo hits. This CD captures it all. You must have this collection as part of your music library.
