Louis and George Johnson formed the Brothers Johnson under the auspices of Quincy Jones in 1975, releasing this second album in 1977. With Quincy at the helm as producer, the duo quickly broke wide open with its debut album Looking Out for #1, which contained the No. 1 R&B smash "I'll Be Good to You" as well as the funk jam "Get the Funk Out My Face." The album's standout is "Strawberry Letter #23," their second No. 1 R&B hit, but it also contains "Runnin' for Your Lovin'," a Top 10 in R&B. Remaining tracks prove spottier, however, with significant filler between the two hits. --Tom Vickers

5 out of 5 stars Right On Time.......2007-02-03

The album is good. "Strawberry Letter 23" however, blows everything else away! For once, I'm rating a entire disc on one song! Five stars...

P.S., I didn't know that the song "Strawberry Letter 23" was a cover. The song was originally done by someone named "Shuggie Otis?" I've gotta find the original and check that out for myself!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Slice Of West Coast Funk.......2007-01-11

One of the more underrated releases of the 1970s - Brothers Johnson, and this disc in particular - have aged very, very well, which is more than you can say about 95% of their contemporaries. At the time, I know everyone noticed how great of a funk/r&b album it was - I had the album as a kid, and the magnificent cover of Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23" was one of THE car radio hits of '77.

But I don't know if everyone noticed how THOUGHTFUL this stuff is, and the subtle sonic diversity underneath the grooves: fluid shifts from jazzy to danceable to folk/pastoral on the last tune, and through this broad musical range, the sense of rhythm and melody never fails. To pull this off and not come across as trendy, or pretentious is quite an accomplishment. These guys talent is never in question, but their musical and imaginative sense of adventure, combined with a genuine charm and sense of really enjoying what they were doing is what makes this disc sound fresh going on 30 years after it's original release.

It should be noted how specific the lyrical imagery is as well - at the time this disc was being made, times were getting a little weird, and the rather precise romanticism that emerges in the words here was - I think - another calculated move (and a good one): what might have seemed a little hippy-dippy in 1970 was a statement of calm, quiet defiance seven years later, at a time when cynicism or nihilism would have been the easier or more expected path to take - witness punk and disco - two contemporary musical movements that both produced some very interesting stuff, but also often got very soulless. All around - in words, music, groove and ambition, RIGHT ON TIME is a definite, late classic of the kind of West Coast r&b pioneered by Shuggie, Sly and Graham Central Station.

I don't know if Brothers Johnson's other releases quite hit the heights of this one, but with this release, they still accomplished far more than most.

-David Alston

5 out of 5 stars This Is Real Music.......2006-12-29

8 tracks, 32 minutes and no filler in sight. This funk/soul/pop gem was released at the height of the disco era but doesn't sound dated, trite or embarrassing as so many LP's from that period do. Quincy Jones' pristine production along with top-notch studio players ensure consistent quality and some of the deepest, funkiest grooves on record. The incomparable Louis Johnson never ceases to amaze the listener with his brilliant bass playing (the dominant instrument here) and the Shuggie Otis classic, "Strawberry Letter 23" is remade here in a sublime, jazzy fashion with a fine vocal by George Johnson and a classic guitar break by Lee Ritenour. This is the second in a string of essential LP's The Brothers released in the 70's and is a testament to thier lasting popularity and influence. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars ¿CAN I SAY AGAIN?.......2006-06-12

"It was the era of the FUNK (Part II) with the smooth assistance of 'The God Father of Record Production,' Mr. Quincy Jones... I will never forget my one chance meeting with "Q" back in the '90's, in an elevator at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center based in Los Angeles, California the largest nonprofit hospital in the western United States. I believe he was visiting his ill mother at the time or maybe it was for personal reason...if my memory services me well... "AnyWay," for me it was a moment frozen in time and he was very cool and so was I too (careful not to freak him out...), so I took the one and only opportunity after our friendly encounter and greeting and asked him so what really is the key to music? He kindly replied, as he held the elevator doors for a second before exiting... "Melody my friend, Melody is KING!""

4 out of 5 stars Well Produced Funk.......2006-03-14

This cd still holds up I'm happy to say. I give 5 stars to Strawberry Letter 23 and the whole cd is strong. Compares to Earth Wind and Fire. Quincy Jones produced this album and it shows. It's like jumping into a timemachine back to the late 70's, early 80's. If you like smooth, funky R&B then you should check this out. Unfortunately, they didn't do a lot more. They have one other release of new material and then a greatest hits package. Too bad. These guys seemed to have a lot of potential. Great fun. Buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta have it!.......2007-01-04

You just gotta have this item! It's one of the finest compilations of hard to find-disco anthems. The liner notes are oustandning, too.

"A date with rain", "Girls", the fantastic "Peace Pipe" by BT Express...
A true revelation.

Check out vol. 2, too. But I personally dig this one the most.

4 out of 5 stars Not so rare disco.......2006-09-16

The songs were very good. I notice that a lot of 7" singles are on this and its companion "Super Rare Disco Vol 2". This appears to be a very common problem with these disco series. I feel that it's because the labels are trying to cram too many songs onto one disc. This genre is more suited for more discs than for more songs per disc.

For those who have the Disco Box and/or have the Disco Years (vol. 1-7), this album and vol. 2 are both excellent additions. I'm surprised that there are not more than two volumes since there are so many rare tracks that are not even available on CD. My suggestions for other songs that I can't find and I'm sure other people would think of more songs.
Here are the ones I would like to see:
Peanut Vendor - The Rithchie Family
Tiger Baby - Silver Convention
I Love America - Patrick Juvet

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped.......2006-08-21

I was excited to get this CD but unfortunately the songs are too short- a fact I overlooked as I like to 'get on in' to my classic grooves, and I don't play it much at all.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-08-31

Having very carefully chosen this CD based on my own memory of the tunes, the music sampler available and, most importantly, comments from other reviewers, it transpires that only 3/20 tracks are more than 4 minutes long. Majority of the tracks are between 3-4 minutes long. Not what I would term as 'Super Rare Disco' at all. Rare Disco is surely the full length 12 inch mixes that would have been played in the clubs, as opposed to radio edits!!! Yes, I realised there were 20 tracks in total on this CD...but not one of the previous reviwers stated all 20 tracks were on just ONE CD, nor the fact that majority of the tracks were radio edits. Shame, as majority of the tracks themselves are very good. Disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars worth buying.......2005-01-13

Super Rare Disco, Vol. 2, is a definite must have for anyone looking for authentic disco classics. Although not every track is great the majority are, and one doesn't have to hunt around buying a lot of CD's for one track. It's worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars SUPER RARE DISCO, Vol. 1 & 2.......2004-04-19

One of the best collections of 1970's hustle music. As a former New Yorker, I still own hundreds of hustle 45's and 12-inch dance records from the 70's and wanted to get the same songs on CDs. This collection of 40 hard-to-find disco songs (on Volume 1 & 2) is great. I liked Volume 2 slightly better than Volume 1, but both are excellent. Even the liner notes are incredibly well-written by a New Yorker who really appreciates classic disco music and who lived through the NY dance club scene in the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection!.......2004-02-09

If you are a disco fan that has "The Disco Box" and/or "The Disco Years, Vol. 1-7" and are looking for something different, then look no further then this collection along with volume 1. It's a great supplement with the well-known mainstream artists. The packaging is superb: entertaining liner notes along with song credits and chart positions. Highly recommended along with volume 1.

The Neville Brothers, as a working unit, emerged as a result of 1976's magnificent Wild Tchoupitoulas project. On that album, the Brothers and their Meters cohorts backed a group of tribal chiefs (including their uncle "Big Chief Jolly") singing traditional Mardi Gras "war songs" and marches. The Nevilles' 1978 debut left behind their New Orleans foundation and suffered because of it. However, 1981's Fiyo represents the pinnacle of the Neville collective, a percolating mix of R&B, soul, funk, and Caribbean rhythms that celebrates their Crescent City heritage. The standards, of course, are entrusted to Aaron's heavenly pipes, but it's the New Orleans anthems that would come to define both the band and the city. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars One good song.......2006-11-10

Only one song on this CD is good -- and it's very good! Iko is a favorite to anyone with a dance feever!

2 out of 5 stars only 25 mins or so of music!.......2006-02-08

there are only 8 songs, mildy mediocre ones at best, the total run time is around 25 minutes...on that basis alone it is not worth the 6 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars Has This Album Really Been Forgotten?.......2006-01-28

I bought this album years ago, I believe at the beginning of the '90's when it had been touted as one of the best albums of the previous decade. To look now and see it selling for $6 with only two amazon reviews is a little disconcerting. I can't imagine that the New Orleans R&B/Funk sound has ever been captured more perfectly in a studio environment. Four of these songs (Hey Pocky Way, Sweet Honey Dripper, Fire on the Bayou and Brother John/Iko Iko) are among the most rollicking and intense performances I've ever heard on record. Run Joe is an infectious midtempo rocker and the cover of Jimmy Cliff's ballad Sitting in Limbo is beautiful.

But wait, aren't there 8 tracks on the album? Unfortunately, yes. Aaron's two syrupy ballad covers are atrocious. Regardless of whether you like the songs in and of themselves (I don't), there can be no doubt that they destroy the momentum and pacing of what could have been a perfect album. In the CD era, I couldn't lunge for my remote fast enough to forward through those tracks. But in the iPod era, no problem: slice 'em, dice 'em and leave them on the cutting room floor. For this price, who cares if you're left w/ less than 30 minutes of music? Edited down, this can't be beat.

Buy it and do other potential buyers a service by not letting this go out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Funkalicious.......2004-02-26

This CD was only available as an import for the longest time. I paid three times amazon's current price, and I definitely got my money's worth, many times over.

This marks one of the first performances of Whitney Houston as a background singer. My, what could've been...

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Best Ever!.......1998-07-07

If I were marooned on a desert island with only this disc, a CD player (eternally powered, somehow), and lots of rum (an eternal supply, somehow) to drink out of coconuts, I'd the happiest man alive. Just the Mardi Gras Indian anthem "Brother John" (mixed here with the classic "Iko Iko") is well worth the price of the disc. The first time I heard it, every hair on my body stood at attention. It's de funk, it's de Caribbean, it's de celestial harmonies of brother Aaron at the high end, brothers Art and Cyril at the low; it's New Orleans at its carnival best, and it just don't get better than that.

Album Description

On Super Heavy Organ, Robert Walter is in able company as he constructs what he calls "soul jazz". For one thing, there's the rhythm section, culled from the finest of the New Orleans old and new guards: Johnny Vidacovich and Stanton Moore, respectively. Although they don't join up on these tracks, they do perform together frequently under another banner. Then we have Tim Green, James Singleton, and Anthony Farrell, as competent as it gets on sax, bass, and vocals. But they deliver more than competence here. It's more of a hardiness, a rollicking funk, done up in contemporary New Orleans style.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Needs editing.......2006-02-26

Robert Walter's funk-jazz album is pretty good, but ultimately would be better with two or three of the weaker songs lopped off. The drumming seat is filled by either Stanton Moore or Johnny Vidacovich. Both of these can guys can play a funky drumbeat. "Kickin' Up Dust" is a highlight. Unfortunately, some of the songs are just flat.

5 out of 5 stars Percussive gumbo stew!.......2006-02-03

For lovers of Hammond B3 music this album is highly recoomended. Walter also manages to get some clavinet, piano and melodica in there as well,as well as adding more percussion. The album is highly percussive with not only Stanton Moore but Johnny Vidacovich adding drums, cymbals and percussion to a variety of the tracks. Its driven along by James Singleton on Bass and some splendid, often tortured Tenor Sax work from James Singleton. To add to the variety Anthony Farrell, described as 'a special guest' is quoted as providing vocals on tracks 3,5 and 7, but if you find them please let me know! Recorded in New Orleans in January 2005 the tracks seem to have been recorded in a relaxed manner, with a lot of studio backchat. There are a variety of styles 'Criminals have a name for it' has a tricky percussion led intro which builds to a strong finish. '34 Small' is a much more moody effort whilst "Don't hate, congratulate' together with 'Big Dummy' are my current favourite tracks. One further point, the sleeve notes note that it is "enhanced" and certainly the difference between playing it on the in-car stereo and letting it rip on my domestic system was marked. I hesitated before purchasing and I really do wish that I'd had the foresight to buy it on its release.

5 out of 5 stars ALL FUNKED UP!.......2006-02-03

With drummers Stanton Moore and Johny Vidocovich on board you can always expect some funky stuff. Walter's organ screams over some of the slickest N.O. drumming grooves anywhere. Solid tunes played by top guys who know how to make their instruments sound loose and happy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Soul........2007-02-26

If you enjoy Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" and "Thriller", the work of Rod Temperton and Heatwave, GQ, The Sylvers and a number of other Soul/Pop/Disco acts from the mid 70's to early 80's who produced tight, brief albums with 8 or 9 cuts and no filler, covering a wide range of moods, textures and grooves all within the confines of about 30-40 minutes, then this 4th LP by George and Louis Johnson is exactly what you want. Often (and unjustly) chided for the super smooth, polished production of Maestro Quincy Jones the Brothers had a terrific run of singles and LP's in the late 70's and early 80's with this 1980 release being thier last big hit; rightly so with stellar tracks like the title cut, "Stomp!" and "U Make Me Wanna Wiggle" leading things off. There is also a beautiful jazz influence on the ballads heard here with the gorgeous instrumental "Smilin' On Ya'" virtually inventing what is now known as "smooth jazz". Another flawless effort from one of the greatest production/performance teams in music history.

5 out of 5 stars Light up the Night.......2006-12-21

A great disc from the Brothers Johnson. My favorites: Stomp, Treasure and Light up the Night! Oh, yes!! Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars LIGHTS UP YOUR NIGHT.......2005-05-17

If you've listened to all of Q's productions, not to mention Rod Temperton's compositions and the brothers' other works, you won't be surprised to find that this album is just as perfect. Possibly the best of all their works, this album features smooth, jazzy funk---music you can't stop dancing to.

STOMP - Killer, killer song...makes you want to stomp all night

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT - Smooth, funky song with awesome horns and lovely background vocals

YOU MAKE ME WANNA WIGGLE - Catchy and funky little number

TREASURE - Smooth slow jam, powered by the genius of Rod Temperton and Richard Heath's lead vocals

THIS HAD TO BE - Killer funk epic, with awesome synthesizers...backgrounds and co-writing provided by Michael Jackson

ALL ABOUT THE HEAVEN - Another slow jam with the smooth vocals of George allowing you to drift up into the clouds

SMILIN' ON YA - Nice instrumental with the great Jerry Hey on trumpet; co-written by Mr. Greg Phillinganes, a frequent collaborator with the Jacksons, Lionel Richie, and others

CLOSER TO THE ONE THAT YOU LOVE - Nice and simple song with great guitars powering this mid-tempo groove

CELEBRATIONS - The great Paulinho DaCosta does his thing on this groovy instrumental

This CD is definitely worth the purchase for all BJ fans, Q fans, and fans of general great funk from the good ole days...

4 out of 5 stars An example of stellar production values, and it funks. .......2005-04-23

This is another example of producer Quincy Jones at the top of his game.
There was a period in the late 70's-early 80's where he was untouchable. He had a distinct sound, managed to get extraordinary results from otherwise ordinary artists, and took established superstars to new levels.

Consider the set of albums all released within a short (3-4 year) time frame: Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" and "Thriller", George Benson's "Give Me The Night", his own
"The Dude", and things like this Brothers Johnson album.

You will find impeccable, tasteful production values, engineered to standards that hold up to the most revealing remastering. Layer upon layer of drums with various other percussive instruments; fat luscious bass lines; orchestral segments with sweet string sections and funky horns; crisp (and more prominent than you'd recall) guitars and judicious use of the then-nascent synthesizer.

Above all, there were the vocals, both upfront and back-up choruses. He made people known for their voice, like Jackson, James Ingram and Patti Austin, sound as good as they ever have, and took those not necessarily known for their vocal prowess (like Benson and the Brothers) to levels they've never reached before or since.

So here, on "Light Up The Night", we have nine sweet-sounding tracks from 1980, led off by the tremendous "Stomp!"...everything a single should be. It sounds perfect on the radio, in your car or on headphones. A driving dance beat, anthemic vocals, killer horns and strings, melodies that hit you one after another with their clarity and soul. It has synth solos and bass solos (!) yet is better off with them as opposed to without them. That in and of itself is amazing.

The Brothers Johnson were masterful musicians. I still have videotapes from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert where they demonstrate their chops for all to see. They were low level stars, but among the most desired session men of their time. I swear the bass playing sounds like someone trying to tame a wild animal. He doesn't play it as much as he unleashes it.

Nothing on the album matches that initial high, but I found myself recognizing all the songs, even though I probably have not listened to this album since 1982.

The title track is a swift poppy number with soothing background vocals. Speaking of, Michael Jackson often showed up as a background vocalist on other people's albums around that time, and here does a nice job on "This Had To Be."

The ballads, like "Treasure" and "All About The Heaven", all sound like the early 80's ballads you know and love. They just happen to "sound" really really good.

Seriously...this Quincy Jones character was taking "sow's ears" and making "silk purses" as if it was as natural and easy for him as breathing.

There's an instrumental ("Smilin' on Ya") and a near-instrumental ("Celebrations"), just to warn you.

Overall, you will get this because:
a) you love "Stomp". And you should.
b) you have some affection for The Brothers Johnson. And you should.
c) you appreciate Quincy Jones' artistry. And you totally should.
d) and you can't beat the price...

4 out of 5 stars "Magic just starting to wear off".......2007-02-04

At the beginning of a new decade L.T.D. release this album after the somewhat dissapointing Devotion from a year earlier and sparks really start to fly right off the bat with the midtempo "Where Did We Go Wrong". For years I never knew who sung this song and that is because Jeffrey Osborne sings this song in a lower register than he does on most songs by the band. This album is worth it just for that song and the inspirational "Shine On". Lovers Everwhere is also one of my favorite tracks as is "Lady Love"(not the Lou Rawls song) with a great lead vocal by Billy Osborne. After this album Jeffrey and Billy Osborne left for solo careers as did long time producer Bobby Martin who left to become a Jehovah's Witness missionary, thus putting an end to this great marraige and L.T.D.'s classic run of hit albums. Although the rest of the album is pretty solid I really wish they could have went out with a bigger bang than this...but you know you can't get everything you want. Although they gained two new lead singers on the next album, things were never the same and the band disbanded two years later. So in conclusion I think this is a good album but could have been better. If you love L.T.D. this album is a keeper regardless and a great purchase because of the bargain price.

5 out of 5 stars Just surperb.......2006-03-02

One of L.T.D's best. If you are a L.T.D or a Jeffery Osborne fan, this CD is a "must have" addition to your collection. A steal at this price.

3 out of 5 stars Typical LTD.......2005-12-12

I like this CD for the same reasons Mr. Grindle dislikes it - the ballads. Apart from "Back in Love Again", LTD's uptempo songs could have been canned. I'm an avid fan of LTD for such songs as "Concentrate on You", "Love Ballad", "We Both Deserve Each Other's Love" and "(Won't Cha) Stay With Me". Shine On was an album with which I waited patiently to be reissued on CD. Jeffrey Osborne's voice and phrasing are tailor-made for romantic ballads, and are wonderfully showcased on the little known song "Lovers Everywhere", featured on this CD. The ballads on this CD lends it its value. Also, I take issue with Mr. Grindle categorizing the ballads as pop as Osborne's style in delivering them is consistent with authentic soul tradition. For fans of LTD's romantic music, I strongly recommend Shine On as it offers some well-known tracks along with some lesser known gems.

4 out of 5 stars Osborne's Last.......2005-03-20

You know upon hearing it 'Shine On' has the same flaw as every LTD release it seems-too little funk and too much smarmy pop balladeering, and for lovers of the latter this album is FULL of that slow jam stuff. But up the tempo and this album COOKS!!!
"You Gave Me Love","Getaway" and the fabulous closer "Don't Cha Know" are all fabulous funk tunes with great songs attached too!But like alot of LTD they just don't sustain funkiness for a whole album.I think a 2 CD compilation of JUST their funk tunes is in order-just too many boring album tracks that are way overrated!

5 out of 5 stars Classic L.T.D........2000-10-27

This is truly L.T.D. at its best. My father purchased this albumn when I was about nine years old. I don't have a clue to where that albumn is now, but I still remember the songs. My favorites were "Where Did We Go Wrong" and "Lovers Everywhere." If you like L.T.D., you will definately love this C.D.!

Sort of like having a wolverine tossed into your lap . . . you MUST get up and jump around. Great beats and mixes well with beer. Don't miss their live show!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Sweet Jesus... It tickles in just the right places!.......2007-06-12

This album is Like a gust of warm wind that blows up the skirt or the bicycle seat thats just the right size. Like the joy of using the word "ironic" in a sarcastic way or stealing candy from a baby to give it to another baby(whose parents are richer). All the good things in life smashed into one album. I will only listen to this album once and then make myself deaf so that no other sounds will defile my head.
Perfection.

4 out of 5 stars Really Funny!.......2005-02-10

I thought this album was very funny. My faves on here are "BootyMan" "Blind Date" "Trailer Love" and "Hung Up on You". BootyMan will really get stuck in your head, and so will Hung Up on you (I'm really huuuung, well he's pretty well hung!) LOL You will enjoy this album.

1 out of 5 stars The Title say's it All........2003-09-05

After listening to this album, it apears as though Tim Wilson hit the nail on the head with this title. This has to be the worst comedy album I have ever heard. Super Bad Sounds of the 70's should be called "the very worst album of 2003"
I would return the album and get my money back if i could. i am totally disappointed with this purchase.
take your money and buy something better, this album is nothing more than an expensive coaster.

5 out of 5 stars Very refreshing....GET IT!!!.......2003-07-20

I read some previous reviews of this album and it prompted me to write this. This album is HILARIOUS. I think the songs are great and the commercials are funny too. Yes it's a trip through an old Soul Train show. AS for the folks who "don't get it" or "blacks will be offended", GET A CLUE. It's comedy. It's supposed to poke fun. Ever hear of Richard Pryor or Chris Rock? They really make fun of white folks like me and it's funny. It's COMEDY..PARODY. The skit about the scramble word board will make you cry it's so funny. Get this album y'all. It's different, but refreshing. Also, the music is awesome!!

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly bad.......2003-06-30

This may be the biggest letdown I have experienced in 30-plus years of being a music and comedy lover.
Tim Wilson, if you're reading this, what were you thinking?
After some solid comedy CD's, Wilson has put out his salute to Soul Train through his country music label...for who?
The songs aren't funny, the music is respectable, but again, who exactly is this product targeted for?
Blacks will surely take offense, and Wilson's longtime fans (like me) are scratching our heads, going, "What the....?"
Whoever "green-lighted" this project at Wilson's record label will apparently approve anything.
Tim...stick to your day job. You're a funny guy. Leave the Philly soul homage' to say, Michael McDonald.

3 out of 5 stars Guess I "missed" it........2003-06-06

The 70's groove was neat, but not enough in my opinion to cement together the mediocre songs. It's like taking a Saturday Night Live Skit and making it into a full length movie(Pat), Tim turned funny jokes into weak songs.

I think too much focus was placed on the 70's theme and not enough on the comedy. Sorry, Tim, but I know you can do better!
