4 out of 5 stars An Old GEM.......2007-03-09

Buy this and Asylum Choir II and you will have a taste of Make Love Not War Boogie from the mid 60s to the early 70s. Two of my favorite albums back then. They haven't lost a thing over 40+ years.

5 out of 5 stars Sing it one more time...I didn't hear ya!.......2007-01-05

This follow up to Leon's self-titled debut album finds the Master of Space and Time in a more focused songwriting mood than before, and a slightly more polished overall sound. I wouldn't say it's better than his first one, since that had too many great songs to be truly topped, but Shelter People is certainly an album that grows on you. It is more consistently interesting than its predecessor. The songs are longer and more thoughtful. Leon Russell was an amazing album with a lot of awesome songs, but there's no doubt Russell was using the shotgun approach when it came to song styles. Just about everything plus the kitchen sink made it on the album. This is not the case on Shelter People. It starts with what is probably my all-time favorite ballad, "Stranger in a Strange Land." This unlikely album opener is the best song on the album, mostly due to Leon's outstanding vocal work. I have often wondered how a voice as unique and awesome as his could really exist, but every time I listen to his albums there it is again. "Of Thee I Sing" is another great song, much more upbeat (might have been a better opener than the ballad but whatever). The compelling piano work and backup singers give it loads of energy. The album moves along very solidly with one rockin tune after another until after "The Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishmen." Things get a little less solid after this lovely tribute to the infamous Joe Cocker Rock and Roll road show of the same name. The songs are still good, but it just seems to lose some of its focus with a lot of experimental sounding cover songs from Dylan and Harrison. Regardless of its faults, Shelter People is, along with Leon Russell, one of the two "must have" Leon Russell studio albums.

5 out of 5 stars Arguably Leon Russell's Best studio album. .......2006-05-09

During the time period of this album (1970 - 1972) Leon Russell was the top rock concert act in the world. Back in the day when most rock groups had four or five members, Leon Russell hit the road with no less than ten top of the line performers, including Derek and the Dominos bassist Carl Radle, and Rev. Patrick Henderson and Black Grass.

On Leon Russell and The Shelter, you get a studio recording that captures much of Leon's concert feel - but where you can understand the words, and the instruments are balanced well. I don't remember if the the personnel are the same, but the feel is right there! Starting with "Of Thee I Sing," and through to the end of the album you'll be looking for a flat peice of ground so you can dance. The piano work is awesome, combining Leon's Black Gospel style (he also played on some of Andrae Crouch's albums) with a bit of blues, honky and country.

If you're a musician, you'll want this album for the "utility licks" and turn arounds and the gold nuggets of playing that Leon throws out there. This album is the one I learned to play pianq from, by listening to it over and over and picking it out bit by bit.

All in all, it's a great selection of a genre of music that is timeless and will make you feel good - and you definitely won't get an inferiority complex as you sing along with Leon! It's about the feeling rather than having a velvety smooth David Gates (Leon also played with him, in the sixties, prior to Bread) voice. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars A pure primal bluesy rock n' roll voice and the funkiest of rock n' roll piano players........2006-03-20

He has the insight, the purity of rhythm, the soul, the inspiration, the voice, and the musical sensibility to place him up there with the greats: Carl Perkins, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams. Check him out on George Harrison's "The Concert for Bangla Desh" (where he steals the show).

5 out of 5 stars Top class remix with bonus tracks.......2006-02-28

I had a tape of the original recording in the 70's that is now long past its use by date. This remix is excellent, each instrument is bright and clear with no loss at the bass end (and no tape hiss). The liner notes list the performers on each track and the recording details. Not important for everyone but necessary for those who are interested in the music makers. This CD is a must for Leon Russell fans and comes with three bonus tracks each performed in Leon Russell's unmistakable style.

Singer Maria McKee, a small woman with a gigantic voice, has always had trouble finding the appropriate backup band and production style--on Lone Justice's second and final album, E Street Band guitarist Little Steven tries to turn her into the female Bruce Springsteen. He's partially successful: on the opening song, "I Found Love," McKee belts like a countrified Aretha Franklin, and each of her five successive "yeahs" sounds more explosive than the next. But while McKee's voice is timeless, the tinkly keyboards and thudding electronic drums make Shelter an '80s period piece. (Guitarist Shane Fontayne, who joined Lone Justice for this album, later performed in Springsteen's post-E Street backup band.) --Steve Knopper

Sing to me. I can't get Belfry out of my head. You Lone JustiCe rider. A woman against the world is what this sounds like. Holy Shiite Batman..I think I want to own the world and take up much of the darkness with my love. I wonder if Sarolta has this. It might be good..(Wink..)I love this. The tiny woman with the big guitars and voice and drums and heart. Kind of like a Tom Petty "Southern Plantation" kind of album. Don't come around here no more..Love to those freakin rockers and Maria who saved my lifE tonight if I have a crises! Love..Ahh..Is it a strong enough expression? I wanted to buy a poetry book. But I just wanted inspiration. And here it is.."Inspiration"'s the song that put Maria on aN undeniable sacred place in the hearts of the loving life changers of ths worlD!

4 out of 5 stars The gift.......2004-11-29

Back in the late eighties, early nineties, I was going through a transition in my taste in music. I was discovering new music that my peers in high school would never listen to. It was definitely an alternative to the metal and r&b/hip hop music that they listened to. One of the greatest discoveries was Lone Justice's "Shelter". I bought the cassette version not long after I heard the country-ish title track on a local radio station. What really stood out for me was the keyboards in this particular song. I still love listening to "Shelter" to this very day. I really didn't care for the opening track "I Found Love". It was one of the weaker tracks on the album I thought. It lacked the lush melodies of "Shelter" and "The Gift" (another great song). Maria McKee's vocals are a bit high pitched but compare her to Britney Spears, Maria sounds like Maria Callas. Maria McKee definitely had a distinct voice all her own that you rarely hear nowadays in music. The album itself doesn't really have one particular sound. At times it sounds rather country-ish with a little folk thrown in for good measure, and other times it is more rock. Some of the songs worked for me, and some like "Beacon" and "I Found Love" didn't work for me. Nevertheless, Lone Justice did have a sound of their own.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't sound like the debut because it's a different band,.......2004-06-22

And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Someone decided to ditch the original members of Lone Justice after their killer 1985 debut and start all over with Maria McKee alone. Like I said, having Maria around is never a bad thing, but I wonder why they decided to issue this album as Lone Justice? This is really the first Maria McKee solo album and in that vein it's just fine. Gone are the inspired country-punks of 1985, and believe me, they'll be missed, but this album stand up pretty well all on it's own. High points are I Found Love, the title track, Reflected (On My Side), Wheels and Dixie Storms, but there isn't a bad apple in this bunch.

3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2003-12-16

The first Lone Justice album was a masterpiece. It was consistent and cohesive. But for a few songs, this one is, in contrast, an incoherent letdown. I'll never forget seeing this band perform in person or on SNL during the "Shelter" tour. They were distilled energy, absolutely brilliant, and Maria McKee prowling the stage or bouncing in place was ready to devour the world and the audience. "I Found Love", the first track on this CD, was the highlight of their shows. Despite the overproduction here, it remains a great song, and Lone Justice was one of the musical high points of the 80's. Maybe that doesn't say much, but I'd put the early Lone Justice in the same class as the early Pretenders or Pixies, without the commercial success of the former or the fan base of the latter. I thought one reviewer's comparison with Patti Smith's band was apt - Maria McKee shook up rock in the mid-80's for me about as much as Patti Smith did in the mid-70's.

Of course, Maria McKee turned out not to be a rocker at heart, and Lone Justice was soon gone. You can hear them fading on this CD. At the time, I didn't enjoy this recording much, with its departure from the band's original fiery sound, though "Shelter" and "Dixie Storms" seemed like good enough ballads. With the passage of time, listening to it today, it seems more consistently interesting, with moments of true pleasure in many songs, though none beyond the first are much more or much less than mediocre lyrically or musically. Bottom line - this doesn't begin to measure up to the first Lone Justice album, but then Lone Justice fans like me might think that Maria McKee's later, quieter work doesn't measure up to this CD. It's a middle ground or a transition point.

The reviewers below mention many good points about listening to "Shelter" in the 21st century. The production makes it sound dated, unlike their debut album. The quality of the songs is inconsistent. This was a stunning band live, but this recording didn't come close to capturing their sound. Still, underneath, there is Maria McKee's voice and passion. She is in fine voice here, and even if this was a poor Lone Justice album, hearing her remains worthwhile. If you're a fan of her later work, this may be a good addition to your collection. If you know the band only from the first Lone Justice album, this may be a disappointment. Then again, for $7 you really can't lose.

4 out of 5 stars Not to be passed by..........2003-03-24

Let's get it out of the way - this is not Maria McKee's best record. However, it is far from being a bad record. Some of her most accessible songs and uplifting work is here.

I think Maria must've had her eyes on the pop prize, and in 1986, that meant dressing up your sound in whacking drum machines and icy synthesizers. Yet, if you're willing to cut through that mess, there's some very rewarding stuff here. Her producers replaced the country-rock of the first Lone Justice record entirely. The rock that results, however, results in letting her voice and lyrical ambitions reach to heights not possible in the old milieu.

Cases in point: "The Gift" and "Inspiration" revel in their reaches for a higher plane. On "Inspiration" especially, Maria's voice is the vehicle that's going to take you there. Her career is full of vocal high points, but this one stands out. She stretches her voice to reach over the rock wall and succeeds mightily. It's like Tina Turner battling Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" on "River Deep Mountain High-" the artistic tension between the clash of styles results in amazing work.

Maria's songwriting stays on point, as well. "Shelter" should have been the hit that made her rich, but...the same thing that's wrong with radio today was the same thing that was wrong back then. "I Found Love" is a stomper, and "Dixie Storms" closes the record sweetly.

The "Maria McKee" record is probably the best distillation of her sound, but you won't go wrong with this one. Get it now before it goes out of print.

From the Label

Sacred marks John McDermott's first recording with the Irish Tenors since rejoining fellow original member Anthony Kearns and Finbar Wright (who actually replaced McDermott in 2000). The Irish Tenors live up to their reputation as "gifted interpreters" with this collection, covering a wide range of spiritual material. Sacred was produced by the Irish Tenors' long-time musical director, Arnie Roth, who has also worked with Charlotte Church, Diana Ross, and Art Garfunkel. The album was produced in Prague at the Rudlofinum and ICN Studios.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words ..........2007-03-22

Having only recently discovered The Irish Tenors, nothing here was a repeat to me. And, even if it was, I can't imagine being disappointed.

If you are open to the idea that music can be a vehicle for a moment of sublime and sacred ecstacy, that may help convey what I find difficult to put into words.

While I live continuously and constantly in Our Father's presence, a music album such as this can certainly heighten the moment with Him.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent voices, songs and arrangements.......2006-06-17

This is an extraordinary collection. The songs are irresistible, the voices incredibly powerful and filled with appropriate emotion, and the orchestra is very simply great. You'll want to buy this album for others. Simply beautiful. A pure joy.

3 out of 5 stars Not their best album.......2006-02-27

For the most part this is an enjoyable collections of sacred music. However the inclussion of "Lord of the Dance" and other modern tunes are dreary no matter who sings them.

I recently went to a concert to hear The Irish Tenors. They did several songs from this CD and it was great. If you like John McDermott as much I do then you must have this CD. This is a triple good CD with 3 top tenors.

5 out of 5 stars Classic[al] Stones.......2007-07-10

As both a huge Rolling Stones fan and a lover of classical music, I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable and interesting discs I own. Here are 11 of the Stones' best songs, as you have never heard them before. This cd is certainly a tribute to the melodic and lyrical genius of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and crew, but the impeccable London Symphony Orchestra and guest vocalists transform these catchy rock tunes into incredibly haunting and powerful musical sagas. The versions of "Ruby Tuesday" and "As Tears Go By" are really amazing and even tragic. "Sympathy for the Devil" has an operatic feel to it. The child-like innocence of "Dandelion" is really quite entertaining. Considering the Stones were really a blues band at heart, one wouldn't think initially that their repertoire would translate well into a symphonic format. But it does. There is only one way to enjoy this rare musical treat-buy this cd now!

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I own........2003-11-04

I've had this CD for what seems like a lifetime now, and I still can't put it away. By far the most timeless CD I own.

3 out of 5 stars Classical classics.......2002-11-12

The lively levi clad rebel music of the Stones is traded in for high brow tuxedo's and an orchestral sound with mixed results. Through the years I've played this disc for a different rendering of the familiar rock anthems. As stated by another reviewer you must not compare because one is rock and one is a classical treatment of a rock song. The problem is that it is hard to seperate comparisons. Beginning with "Street Fighting Man" the Stones anthem that was banned because of the resulting violence it incited, the disc is a subdued and barely recognized shell of the original Richards and Jagger penned number. The translations work at times like the interesting versions of "Paint It Black"and the hauntingly beautifully dark "Symphony For the Devil" that sounds like a theme from play. For the most part the pure musical numbers are better than the others where vocals exist becuse of the inevitable vioce comparisons. An exception might be Marianne Fathfull's rendering of "Ruby Tuesday." Mick Jagger is featured on one song, "Angie," for a slightly different vocal interpretation that is slower and more dramatic. The London Symphony Orchestra produces a lush backdrop for the familiar songs associated with guitar and rock and roll. Taken alone it is a nice sampling of the Stones music but it is very hard to not make comparisons. They are two different genres and should be treated as such. Nonetheless I prefer the original versions but find these songs to be more soothing and sophisticated. As alternatives to the originals it sounds good but not great.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent choice.......2002-08-27

If you enjoy Classical versions of rock music, this is one that you must get. I love it. They have excellent version of the songs. This album is THE album that turned me on with Classical version of Rock music.

3 out of 5 stars Forget the original Stones stuff--just enjoy for itself.......1999-07-23

Interesting form of Stones music--definitely not for the Stones purist, but not bad if just taken as music to enjoy by itself.

This one was highly anticipated. Almost lived up to expectations. Lots of wild sound effects distorts an otherwise amazing collage of singles. Eventually, when you can totally sink into the hodgepodge -- like when you're driving -- the assortment of bells and whistles coheres into something really unique and pretty special. Terrific headphone experience, but not the first choice for social listening.

4 out of 5 stars I owe Ms Garrett an aplogy.......2006-02-17

Like many others I was absolutely devastated when N'Dea left BNH. But being a fan of this band I bought Shelter and I think I listened to it all of 2 times and didn't care for it.

I tore Siedah Garrett to shreds and basically felt "how dare she try and replace N'Dea" cuz to me it was nowhere near the same. And I don't agree with the first reviewer here. N'Dea is what made that band and she will always be what made them. She was the gas to their engine. Anyway I was real disappointed in Siedah's voice because you cannot even compare the two.

Fast forward about 8 years and I was browsing for music and saw it sitting there and thought I should give it another chance. And I guess I just needed some time to get over N'Deas departure because he voice is nowhere near as bad as I remembered in my head. Actually quite the contrary, it was good.

And the songwriting on this album is among the strongest that they have ever done. I would put this as a classic among the first 2. BNH kinda fell downhill after that but I am such a fan of this band that I think I'd buy an album of farts set to their music : )

5 out of 5 stars If you don't buy any other CD, buy this one..........2005-06-30

Smooth old school grooves, neo-funk, eclectic and classical jazz, and R & B all wrapped up in one. What is there to say except that this group's musical genius brilliantly and beautifully brings all these genres off into a wonderful blend of extraordinary musical melodies that moves the soul, the mind, and gives the listener a higher plane of listening pleasure to their senses. The Brand New Heavies is truly a group that could be mused as "The Underdog", "Musical Sleeper", and even "Under-Marketed" and truly needs props for their much deserved fame.

True musical genius is hard to find in this day and time in the Musical Entertainment World with everything digitized, and singers who sound as if your ears deserved some sort of punishment for enduring their unearthly sounds which we classify as "singing" these days; whereas these artists are racking up undeserved fame that breeds that unending question mark in one's sane musical mind of "How?"

Not so with the BNH's. I rarely have the opportunity to say anymore that I have bought a CD in which I can pop in and truly like and enjoy every song. And with my vast like of musical genres and a strong background in music, I believe I can say I know and hear true talent. The eclectic smooth groove of "Sometimes" and "Highest High" really moved me deep with not only the music composition and positive lyrics, but makes me zoom through my days faster with a more positive mood to boot. But the question is which song on this CD doesn't have its own magic?

I recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys musical tastes in R & B, most forms of jazz, and a touch of old-school soul and Pop. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Much,Much Better.......2005-05-25

I must disagree with critics and some fans-I much prefer Siedah Garret's singing over N'Dea-Garret has far more experience and doesn't try so hard to be convincing. And this being their third proper studio album The Brand New Heavies have grown a great deal as songwriters and have learned that crucial, unnamable ingrediant that made the funk of the 70's what it was.And it wasn't just real instruments either.By far the best song here is "You Are The Universe",an upbeat song with a genuinely positive message for people to keep control and revel in their given freedom. Not to mention th wonderful "I Like It","Highest High",well for that matter everything else here not only showcases musical professionalism and instrumentation but that songwriting has taken a priority over grooves and jamming, which to my ears is very much a saving grace. So if you are like me and believe that you can jam, groove AND write great songs too with your funk 'Shelter' will be the Brand New Heavies' album for you.

5 out of 5 stars it's AWESOME !!.......2004-04-15

this CD is one of the best. whether or not you want to jam or chill out and dream, this is the CD for you...it's jazz with all the right emotion.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT album ! DON'T buy it!.......2003-12-28

This record is unbelievable ! It's truly any serious music lover's wonder why this band wasn't one of the biggest hits of the 90s. On top of being a first-class acid-jazz/new-soul/neo-funk/whatever-you-may-call-it band (leading the way in that style alongside other British-based band Incognito), the Brand New Heavies got a brand-new vocalist on that album who added a whole new dimension to their music.

Siedah Garrett was no newcomer though, having been a background singer for Michael Jackson for years (she also wrote "Man In The Mirror" and sang the famous duet "I Just Can't Stand Lovin' You" with him on the album "Bad"). She had a try at solo recordings under the auspices of her mentor Quincy Jones (with the great single "Refuse To Be Loose" and a debut album going completely unnoticed) and was one of the major protagonists of Q's "Back On The Block" album, singing side-by-side with Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Sarah Vaughan and the likes, and even a duet with Chaka Khan !

On "Shelter", Siedah adds her inspired and soulful raspy singing which fits the band like a glove (I much prefer her contribution to that of N'Dea before her), making this album my favorite by the band. Sadly, Siedah departed after this one project with the Heavies, being now replaced by able Carleen Anderson from Young Disciples fame (and two superb solo albums in-between). What is Siedah up to nowadays? I really don't know.

Well, just in case I convinced you to buy this CD... DON'T !!! This is the re-release of the original edition, which didn't contain "You've Got A Friend" as a bonus (included in the European edition). So my advice is for you to look for a copy of that now-unavailable edition (the one with the white cover) and make the most of that fantastic album !

This Ruth Copeland collection is a good one with excellent remastering for stereo. All of the songs are here except "Madam Butterfly". Why they left it out is a complete mystery to me. That is the main reason I could only give this cd 4 stars.

I was so happy to come across this CD. I have all three of Ruth's early albums, even have a 45. Particularly relevant in today's political climate is "The Medal" - touches my heart. I also love "Crying". Her voice speaks to me with such soul. Very talented and underrated artist.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Contemporary Folk Music.......2002-07-12

I dusted off this CD recently. WOW. I remember playing it to death when I first go it, then it got lost in some boxes during various apartment/house moves. This is a MUST HAVE for any fan of folk music, or someone who is just getting into folk music from the likes of Dar Williams, Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin, etc. It gives you a GREAT selection of artists who are not too well know in the "pop" music circle like : ELLIS PAUL, Patty Larkin, Cheryl Wheeler, Catie Curtis, Dana Robinson.
Again a must have !

1 out of 5 stars I agree with Carlos.......2000-12-28

There are only a select few songs I enjoy. I thought may be he (Carlos) was just an extraneous factor...after buying the album, however, I definitely agree that it's not worth the investment. Putumayo is an excellent label, and has other selections that are awesome: Mediterranean Odyssey, Africa, and Romantica are among my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars The search stops here.......2000-12-07

This is a brilliant CD. Reviews often tell you more about the reviewer than the work. If you are looking for folk music in the American tradition of Peter, Paul and Mary or Simon and Garfunkel, you have hit a gold mine. If you know or like the Indigo Girls, Dar Willaims, Tori Amos or Ani Difranco, you want this. It is a fantastic mix of songs that is mind-blowing in the consistent quality, given the fact that you probably know few of the artists. The Sarah McLachlan song is actually one of the weakest on the two CDs. After listening to this collection, I have followed up buying cds by several of the artists, and am looking for the work of others. Dar Williams is great, and listening to Travellin' Again should be enough to get you to invest in her music. You won't be disappointed. Ellis Paul is brilliant. Carrie Newcomer, Joe Henry, Rex Fowler (of Aztec Two-step, which I didn't know about until I followed up his solo work here), Dougie MacLean, Cheryl Wheeler, John Gorka, Pat Alger are all phenomenal. These are names and songs that are probably new to you, but I can't tell you how great their songs are. This is a great investment is music discovery. Laura Love is unbelievably talented, and Putumayo has a fantastic collection of her "Afro-Celt" stuff. I see Shawn Colvin's "Another round of Blues" as the real anchor, even though the name is Shelter. At least 16 of the 28 songs are really great, and each is by a different artist. I have never seen a mix to compare. I love used CD shops, and have searched for compilations in many cities and stores. This is hands down the best. Some great mixes exist of hit songs, which I like, but the mixes of obscure are also great places to find special songs. But most of those mixes offer some special songs, but a lot of filler. This has virtually no filler. Personal tastes will differ, but if you really like any of the people named earlier in this review, you want this album. If you don't, sell it at half.com and I'll buy it. I have a standing order for all they get in. There are many people that I want to give it to, but new costs are pricy, and cdr's don't help the artists. I give this only five stars because that is as high as ratings go. But if you are looking for new names and music to widen your music, I know of no better place to start.

1 out of 5 stars Best artist, maybe. Best songs, I'm not so sure........2000-03-16

I bought this album and set out to actually listen to it all the way through. It was mildly interesting but, a couple of months later, I have lost interest. The only tunes I can remember are "Shelter" by Sarah McLachlan and "Spin On A Red Brick Floor" by Nanci Griffith. Considering the cost of this CD set, I don't think it's a good investment.

4 out of 5 stars Shelter.......1999-12-11

Sometimes music wraps you up and cradles you like a baby in a blanket. That may be cheezy or cliche but that's how many of the songs of this album have made me feel. It made me appreciate folk in a way I hadn't before and would recommend it to anyone. Although a few tracks are not my particular favorites, it's worth it for every other song.

Album Description

SHELTER may be Jacqui Naylor's third CD on her Ruby Records imprint, but it surely will be hailed as the break-through CD for this native Californian with the voice that has been lauded as "having the ultimate momentum of becoming the next big thing." And,"We've all heard of Norah Jones but this is stronger, deeper, sexier."

The CD includes 11 songs written by Naylor and pianist/producer Art Khu. SHELTER also includes the beautifully written and arranged,"I Remember You" which was written by another of Naylor's collaborators and friends, Joe Wilson. The set is rounded out by Naylor's rendition of Joan Armatrading's "Love and Affection" and the classic Rolling Stone's song, "Miss You."

Jacqui Naylor's commitment to her art shines through on every note of SHELTER. "As an artist, I feel that I am beginning to understand who I am and what I have to contribute. As a Buddhist and human being, I believe that we all have the capacity to make a difference with our hearts and our actions. And as a businessperson, I am committed to melding the inside with the outside, bringing people's talents together to create and distribute music in a new way," says Naylor.

One of the more standout tracks on this incredible collection of songs is the tune,"I Remember You" written by Joe Wilson who is a 15-year survivor of AIDS and is also the founder of Artists Against AIDS, San Francisco.

Through their friendship, Jacqui was inspired to take action beyond recording the song for SHELTER-- On World AIDS Day 2002 to raise awareness for AIDS and to remember those lost to the disease Naylor performed the ballad live that day at four AIDS- related events.

"It was by far one of the most exhausting days of my life but also one of the most rewarding. Everyone knows what it is like to lose someone, so spending the day remembering and connecting with others through this song was amazing. It has become the metaphor for what is possible, and the guiding force for SHELTER," says Naylor.

3 out of 5 stars This is not up to her live performance standards.......2005-07-10

I wanted to love this album. Heard Jacqui live in San Francisco at outdoor festival and was just knocked out by her phrasing and timing. She seems to have a great musician's feel, which is somewhat rare among some of the "chanteusse" like singers she is sometimes compared to. But this recording is just flat; it has little spark, although it is competent. Just competent, not interesting. Not sure where to find the best of Jacqui, since most of the reviews I've seen say this is the best of her studio efforts. I played it a few times and forgot about it. Just not an interesting effort.

5 out of 5 stars Very poetic .......2005-01-14

I had a chance to see Jacqui Naylor and Art Khu live in New Orleans about a year ago, and more than a year before that I was already a Jacqui Naylor's voice huge fan (hint: see my 5 star review of her yellow album). Some songs in this CD exhibit a certain musical signature that, I think, is probably sort of a watermark of Art Khu. For me there's a tension/energy, almost a slight urgency, or even tint of aggression (musically speaking, not lyrics-wise) that were nowhere to be seen in her yellow or red albums.

Rhytmically speaking, the song that catches my attention the most in this CD is "Miss You" (#3). In Jacqui's sexy humming and voice, and with this very catchy musical arrangement, this song reaches for me a special classic status, more so than the already classic Rolling Stones's creation.

About "All for you" (#6), interestingly, to me the song "sounds" almost like a dark grey private day. The lyrics do speak of a "private" slow day, though not rainy/grey at all, but shiny, warm and sunny. The song starts unassumingly, and the lyrics go very very suggestively, beautifully describing that even "willows are not weeping..." Then there is this very specific moment, a sort of climax of intrigue, the moment when Jacqui sings "Listen, the breeze knows the day...", shortly followed by a completely open invitation: "Let's make love worthy of the day"... This is truly a wonderful poem and song.

"Climb Higher" (#7) also gets all my attention very specially every time Jacqui sings the word "Higher", it is the chant of an angel plain an simple. Exactly like the lyrics, this song and music projects the purest motherly love. "Sleep my sweetness sleep, in precious innocence...". So beautiful.

"Take this chance" (#9) has a tense cello intro, and then a very pleasant guitar all the way. This is a song with strikingly no-nonsense, non-metaphorical lyrics: "Why are you willing to take the chance of losing love?..."

"Cheese Puff Daddy" (#10), another song with amazing rhythm, and a funny, sassy song in itself.

"If you know love" (#11), is one of the songs in this CD that has the biggest emotional effect on me. From the very beginning, those acoustic guitar sounds seem to invite you to dance softly to the wonderful music that follows (waltzy, with some latin touches), just softly and closely, with the person you want to grow old with; it is that kind of song. And this song has one (among many) of the sonic landscapes that I think Jacqui's voice is absolutely perfect for.

#13, "Tired" is totally jazzy, with touches of Brazilian charm. An awesome combination of bass, saxo?, drums, and piano, Jacqui's voice of course, and that "twig twig" Brazilian-like sounding instrument which I don't know the name of. The ending having Jacqui's voice singing "Tired" almost going far away in the distance evokes images of a noir film, with a gorgeous lady leaving a guy alone in a smokey room, for good and forever, very jazzy and noir.

#14 "Fall" has such a beautiful guitar, sad and beautiful lyrics. "Let my words do what no silence will"...

A bonus for us audiophiles, the recording quality is truly excellent I think.

This is a very poetic CD, and truly a very personal and sincere creation. I love it, and highly highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Silky and Subtle.......2004-10-05

Jacqui Naylor's first album was pleasant and enjoyable, but her latest "Shelter" is a work of art. She has perfected her style into sultry, smokey, and yet completely smooth Jazz/Pop/Blues. Her voice aches with love, lust, sorrow, anger, and longing from track to track, and the transition to each is seamless. The songs are all high quality tunes that you'll find yourself humming throughout the day (a problem i found with her first album is that some of the songs were rather weak, this mistake is not repeated however) and the orchestration is lush, subtle, and never overdone.
some standouts....
Shelter - Definitely one of my favorites, it's soft and silky and sultry, and perfectly captures that feeling of safety found in a relationship.
I Remmeber You - This one has a lovely sway in its rhythm, and the ache in Jacqui's voice will break your heart.
Love & Affection - Super sexy!
Tired - Fun & witty rant at failing romance. The line "So goodbye, and don't forget to take out the trash I saw you with last week" is so perfectly delivered, I laughed out loud.

I highly recommend this album. It's great for close listening by yourself, background music for reading or chatting, or curling up with your sweetheart.

5 out of 5 stars Jacqui Naylor has a place among the stars.......2004-02-10

Though the track "Miss You" could make you think otherwise, and in spite of the repeated comparisons with the folk-jazz diva, I prefer Jacqui Naylor's work above that of Norah Jones. Having taken that out of my chest, and knowing I will probably get flamed by Norah's fans (although I didn't say I disliked Norah Jones' music), I stand by my statement and here's why.

This is a very mature album, which is not coincidential, considering she's recorded two albums before this one (check out her site www.jacquinaylor.com, for MP3s to allow you to sample her entire discography). For this recording, the songs fall into four somewhat distinct categories: the piano-based tracks, the guitar-based and cello-guitar-based tracks, the tropical-influenced tracks and the "standard" jazz songs.

As for the piano tracks, co-producer/songwriter Art Khu plays the piano in most of them, adding an intimate touch that magically blends with Jacqui's voice, yielding some of the most amazing works in the album, such as the case of the title track, the touching "I Remember You" and the ballads "All For You" and Joan Armatrading's "Love & Affection" (with the rhythmic counterpart of Jon Evans on bass and Jason Lewis on drums).

Matt Brubeck's cello work (Berkeley Symphony, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls and others) pours a life and a special soul into a few tracks (perhaps too few, for my preferences), always going alongside an exquisite (and very Sting-like, it must be said, too) Nylon String guitar by Craig Steen, Steve Erquiaga and Brian Pardo. "Free My Love", "Climb Higher" (my favorite track) and the closing track are the best examples of this type of work.

In terms of the more "tropical" tracks, there's a little bit of everything, but mainly Brazillian influences can be felt outside the tracks mentioned so far. For starters, when I listen to "Miss You" (a Jagger-Richards song) I can't avoid thinking of the very groovy NY-Rican band, SiSe. But the real flava' of the album begins in the second half, when Bossa Nova-influenced "Winter", and bossa ballads "Take This Chance" (also with Matt Brubeck on cello) and "If You Know Love" show a whole new dimension of Jacqui's voice that would otherwise remain hidden from us.

Finally, for straight jazz lovers, there's "Tired" (though not without some Brazillian touches sprinkled by Emiliano Benevides) and "Cheese Puff Daddy". So, when someone tells me that Jacqui sounds a bit like "Norah Jones meets Beth Orton", though I can see the resemblance in a few places, I say "Nah!" Jacqui's voice stands out like none of the two, and she definitely also has a place among the stars. Time will confirm it, I am sure.

5 out of 5 stars Gimme "Shelter".......2004-01-29

Jacqui Naylor's "Shelter" is a soothing, melancholy portrait in blue, a memorable, classic-feeling jazz album by a deeply talented singer. Naylor's throaty voice and the gentle, shimmering accompaniment by Art Khu combine for a beautiful listening experience.

The album builds up with the slow, pleading "Shelter," before unfolding into the contemplative "Before I'm Gone," the subtlely mischievous cover "Miss You," catchy guitar-led "Free My Love," ethereal ballad "All For You," sax-augmented "Winter," and the outright amusing "Cheese Puff Daddy." ("You're a cheese puff daddy and I don't eat... junk... food!")

Naylor's vocals are good'n'flexible, as well as clear, soft and sultry. In a few songs, like the Rolling Stones cover "Miss You," her voice takes on a slightly naughty tone. You can tell she's enjoying herself there. Her voice sets the mood for each song, becoming cool or warm, hard or soft as the music demands.

The songs, all but a few written by Naylor and Khu, are simple but quite pretty. While they have a note of sadness, there's a sense of optimism as well. ("In your eyes I see /The hope of what the world can be/I would give my life /Too see you grow into great things..."). The music is a blend of jazz, folk, blues, with touches of trip-hop in places to spice it up. Plenty of smooth sax, percussion, and gentle guitar.

A bittersweet album, "Shelter" is the right thing to listen to on a slow rainy day while stroking a sleeping cat, or maybe to slow-dance to in the evening by candlelight. Pretty and beautifully sung, this is a keeper.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Badelt's most underrated effort.......2005-11-09

If you're any kind of film score fan, then you need to pick yourself up a copy of this album - even if it is second hand. The biggest problem with this album is that it isn't so readily available in the US as it is in Australia, and that does an injustice to Klaus Badelt, who here presents us with some extremely engaging and touching music.

The score is written mainly for a fairly decent sized orchestra with a strong emphasis on the strings, with the brass acting only as an accent on the strings, as evidenced in the third track 'Ned Kelly' where we have the main theme stated in full. It sounds so cliched, but everytime I listen to this track it sends shivers up my spine. Every single time. I love it!

The album also features two songs performed by Bernard Fanning. The first 'Shelter for my Soul', opens the album and fits in quite nicely with the themes and tone of Badelt's work (Badelt wrote and arranged the strings for this piece as well). The second piece is a traditional Australian folk piece called 'Moreton Bay'. Like the review below states, because this song is right in the middle of the album, it really detracts from the experience of Badelt's work, and should have been saved for the end of the album.

Badelt has written some very bittersweet themes that are both hopeful and mournful by turns. I believe Badelt is underrated for the many electronic and synth-influenced scores he has produced, but the writing in tracks such as 'Ned Kelly', 'The Light', 'Back Home' and 'The Jerilderie Letter' only confirm that he is a very deft hand at writing for a full orchestra. His solos are beautifully placed as well - an Irish whistle is used only occassionally, but is most appropriate when it does show up, and roots the score in its Australiana setting. The score also features viola and trumpet solos that are generally featured during the more character-driven moements of the film (of which there are many) and make for a fairly intimate score at times.

If you don't expect any big, racey action writing, and are after an orchestral score with heart, then Ned Kelly comes highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars for Klaus Badelt's Most Underrated Score.......2003-11-01

I first heard the music to Ned Kelly when I travelled to Australia and watched the movie. While I was a tad dissappointed, I went out and bouth the CD immediately, and have been moved like no other score can do ever since. Klaus Badelt has been one of my favourite composers since his VERY early work on Extreme Days, but I found this CD to be something completely different. In the tracks such as Ned Kelly and my personal favourite, The Glenrowan Inn, Badelt uses such a tragic heroic musical theme that stands outside the movie as a work of art. Like the first reviewer stated, this is not typical action-music fare, which I can't get enough of, but it is so beautiful, haunting, and moving that I swear you will not be dissappointed by this score, although you might be by the movie.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Beautiful!.......2003-05-09

This is the music composed by Klaus Badelt for the 2003 released film 'Ned Kelly'. Klaus Badelt was also responsible for the music from The Time Machine, The Recruit and K-19: The Widowmaker and has a steadily increasing catalogue of very successful solo scores under his belt now. Don't expect the usual Media Ventures synth and percussion assault (which I love to death) but do expect some of the most well written film music of the last year or so. Synths have been used through the score, but the bulk of it is performed by a real orchestra and several solo instruemtns have beenemployed as well (violin, viola, cello, trumpet, flutes and pipes)

The music he has written for Ned Kelly is, in a word, beautiful. The film wasn't intended to be an action romp through the countryside of Victoria, but instead it made an attempt to reflect on Kelly's feelings, emotions and reasoning behind some of his actions, and Badelt's score suits this view perfectly.

The CD contains two songs by Bernard Fanning (lead singer/songwriter from the Australian band Powderfinger) and the disc opens with his track 'Shelter For My Soul' which is used in the end credits of the film. It's a well constructed piano piece that speaks about how actions have consequences. Badelt has also lent a hand on this piece by arranging the accompanying strings. This leads us into the next two tracks 'Saving a Life' and 'Ned Kelly' which are performed together to form one nine minute piece that sets up the main themes for the rest of the disc. It is a very bittersweet theme that brings to life the mistakes Ned makes, but the guilt and sorrow he feels for what he has done and the path it has led him to. It's a very moving theme and while it isn't a bombastic orchestral assault, it is very powerfully performed. These two pieces nearly have me in tears I find them so moving :P

'Destiny' is a very sombre theme that is used to set up that sense of foreboding in the film. It incorporates the use of an irish pipe which gives us a sense of the Kelly family's Irish ancestry, but the instrument isn't over used which was a sensible decision from Badelt. 'The Light' is a more upbeat piece which again uses the irish pipes in a very uplifting cue, and 'Julia' isn't the sweet feminine theme you'd usually associate with similarly titled pieces. The sense of foreboding picks up here as the orchestra builds on the theme set up in the previous piece.

'Stringybark Creek' features the solo trumpet and flute amongst the orchestra for a slower interpretation of the two main themes at the beginning of the disc, while 'Back Home' features more of the irish pipe from 'Destiny' and some short violin passages before it drops to a solo trumpet passage and the first of the real action cues from the film.

'Moreton Bay' is the second track offered by Bernard Fanning, and this is the only really dissapoint piece on the album. It is a reworking of a traditional Australian folk song and while the style has it's place some scenes of the film, it is totally out of context on this CD, especially in the middle of the disc. Bernard Fanning also probably wasn't the best choise either, but he is Austraian, and lends that particular quality to his viocal performance. This is where the album lost half a star for me.

From this point on, the situation the Kelly Gang finds themselves in is growing darker, and the score reflects this change by turning some of the themes upside down and. There is still that bittersweet theme running through out, but it is perhaps more accuate now as Ned realises that what he has done, even if he didn't want to or was forced todo it, is going to have consequences he can't escape. 'Doomed' and 'Outlaws' nicely capture the gang on the run and trying to find a way out as the law gets closer and closer to them.

'The Jerilderie Letter' is the scene in the bank where the hostage are offering up names to call the governer. It begins lightheartedly, but as Ned's speech get progressivly more serious, the tone of the music matches and the piece ends on a sharp rise.

'Father' is simply a short piece of reflection and quite before the storm of 'The Glenrowan Inn'. The piece charts the whole end scene from the gang arriving at the inn and anxiously waiting for the poilce, to the shoot out itself, and then the aftermath the next morning and Ned makes his last stand and is finally captured. Again, this piece is another watery-eyed experience for me. The album ends with 'Remembering Ned Kelly' which is a simple two minute solo from the viola. Again just a very retospective piece.

This is a highlight of Badelt's career so far and it's a pity the CD isn't more readily available. It sounds so much like him, yet at the same time is something very different. This is highly recommended even if you didn't like the movie.
