Like that series, the album features a luscious non-stop mix of ethnic-flavored grooves, spiritual essence and intoxicating beats compiled and mixed by the Gordon brothers. HOTEL TARA ups the "dreamy" quotient, creating an atmosphere that is at once peaceful and soulful. The beats are low-tempo and many of the songs have a touch of Indian instrumentation as well as a subtle retro-lounge flair. Artists include David and Steve Gordon, Gingko Garden, Althea W., Jaya Lakshmi, Artemisia and others. This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to."

Unwind with this..........2007-03-26
Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.
A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25
I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.
Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10
Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.
The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10
David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

Customer Reviews:
THE Most Underrated British Band.......2002-07-23
The Spencer Davis Group may be the most underrated group in the British Invasion. The band had a tight, swinging sound, a nice balance between guitars and keyboards, and a tasty selection of musical influences - not to mention rock's greatest white-soul singer (Stevie Winwood). Their albums featured some of the best British blues and R&B, along with pop-rock to rival what the Beatles were doing at the same time (this was pre-"Sgt. Pepper," after all). Perhaps one day the SDG will finally get their due.
As to this particular release, it consists of "live" BBC recordings, which were essentially live-in-the-studio takes that were intended to be as close to the originals as possible. That makes this release a greatest-hits collection as much as a "live" album. Furthermore, the final four tracks were recorded after the departure of essential front-man Steve Winwood. While not essential, however, they do make a nice sampler of post-Winwood SDG, and "With Their New Face On" is a classic.

Album Description
A 2 CD retrospective of Brian Auger's career, including hits from the Trinity/Julie Driscoll, Oblivion Express and new, unreleased material.
Customer Reviews:
Something of a Revelation..........2007-02-24
Brian Auger was never quite a headline act in the United States, but he should have been. This two-disc encapsulation of Auger's career is a good place to start, if you missed out on Auger in the 60's and 70's.
DISC ONE begins with some very listenable Brit-jazz, with a very young Auger leading groups on piano. Sounding very influenced by the Blue Note stable of pianists, Auger turns in some very pleasant (though hardly world-shaking) stuff. Midway through the selections, the focus shifts to Auger's B-3 Hammond work, which is where Auger started to turn heads, and really established himself. Of these tunes, the standout is a great arrangement of Art Blakey's "Moanin".
With the addition of British singer Julie Driscoll, Auger's late Sixties band ("The Trinity") steered into lively (if a bit arch) funk music. Driscoll was a powerful, singer with a theatrical presence, but it isn't too hard to conjure images of white girls with frizzy Afros gyrating the boogaloo, here. These tracks are really quite good, but you may have to stifle a laugh or two while listening.
With his album "Streetnoise", Auger finally immersed himself in Rock. "Season of the Witch" is probably the best version extant of that Donovan tune, and "Tropic of Capricorn" is as close as Auger ever got to sounding like Keith Emerson and the Nice.
So, the stage is then set for DISC TWO, where Auger again reverses course, and starts laying down some seriously funky fusion music. This is where he really excelled, and why the "Acid Jazz" people still like him today. "Listen Here" is a ten minute piledriver of a vamp. Over a Spencer Davis style, pounding bass line, Auger trades solos with Gary Boyle, who had joined the group on guitar, and who delivers some very exciting, Jeff Beck-style licks. It's too bad that this is about the only track that Boyle is featured on, because he provides more fireworks than his successors. (Boyle went on to play with Keith Tippett, an avant garde pianist who married Julie Driscoll.)
"Freedom Jazz Dance", with Jim Mullen picking up the guitar chores, also has a great groove. Alex Ligertwood had come on board as vocalist by this time, and he sounds A LOT like Steve Winwood. "Happiness is Just Around the Bend" is as close as Auger ever got to a hit record, and features Auger on electric piano. With Auger on this instrument, his band was very similar to Jeff Beck's second group--the one featuring Max Middleton. (Not surprisingly, Beck's bass player, Clive Chaman, turns up on Auger's "Beginning Again", another track that got heavy FM radio play in the 70's.
This was/is exciting music that should have broken Auger worldwide. But, it wasn't to be. Brian Auger always seemed a hair's breath away from cracking the big time. He left behind some of the tastiest funk and fusion music of the period. It makes one wish for what could have been--if only Jeff Beck and Brian Auger had gotten together, it would have been a magnificent pairing.
"Auger-Rhythms" is an artifact which conclusively establishes that Auger was one of the top two or three rock keyboardists of all time, who never played badly, and should have been accorded far more recognition than he got.
Hey, You There. . . .LISTEN HERE!.......2004-11-08
It seems that there are some things that the majority of people do not like. For instance, the taste of brussels sprouts and fruitcake; or the smell of brand new carpeting; or the low-hanging grey of overcast skies; the cracking of knuckles; the telling of puns; the comedy of Jackie Mason; and the sound of the organ. But all of these are on my "thumb's up" list. If you side with me.....on the sound of the organ, that is.....then this is a "must own" 2-disc set!
This is an excellent 28 song career retrospective of the vastly underrated keyboardist, Brian Auger. The variety of styles employed in his creative, genre-bending recorded output, which encompasses parts of 5 decades, are well represented on AUGER RHYTHMS. If the name Brian Auger doesn't mean anything to you, then sadly, you've missed out on some really exciting music. You can correct that oversight right now. LISTEN HERE. . .
The first 5 tracks on disc 1 give us Brian's early, straightforward jazz excursions with his piano as the lead instrument. These 5 pieces are performed by obviously accomplished musicians, and all are highly enjoyable if somewhat derivative. It's technically impressive, and it swings nicely, but it's not particularly original. This is the early phase of a gifted musician who had not yet discovered the unique, artistic "voice" dwelling in his innermost regions.
It is with track #6, MOANIN', the Bobby Timmons composition, made into a certifiable Jazz classic by the great Art Blakey, that Brian first plugs in his Hammond B-3 organ, and LOOK OUT! Now the sparks are flying all over the place while the scent of burnt ebony, ivory, and ozone goes wafting through the room. This is the incendiary playing that we've come here for. Not only does MOANIN' cook, but AUGER actually cuts BLAKEY on his own signature tune, and I assure you, that ain't some small feat! We get more B-3 flamethrowing on the next couple of tracks. Beginning with I'VE GOTTA GO NOW, the set moves into Auger's stuff with vocals by Julie Driscoll. I don't find it offensive, but it's not my scene; maybe it's yours. Think in terms of the era that gave us Cream, early Doors, Go-Go Dancers and LSD.
Disc 1 closes with a couple of gems : I know this may seem blasphemous to some of you, but I'm not real big on The Beatles. Auger's instrumental take on A DAY IN THE LIFE is a majestic and sweeping epic of fire and crescendo; the arrangement is nothing short of magnificent! The Beatles never sounded so grand or so musical. TROPIC OF CAPRICORN is another winner.
Disc 2 opens with LISTEN HERE, the pinnacle of the collection; the supreme staging ground for Auger's mystifying fingers. The legendary funk drummer from Cork, Ireland, Yoey O'Dogherty, once famously quipped that, "If the hips ain't movin' the tune ain't groovin'!" Well, babe, LISTEN HERE is seriously groovin'! It employs 4 drummers and 2 bassists - yeah, you might say it's got some "bottom" to it. It's a raging 9 minute rhythm monster; a JAM thicker than PEANUT BUTTER! Don't forget to board up the windows, batten down the hatches, anchor the roof with steel cable, and make sure the kids are safe before you crank up this bad boy! And be sure to remove all nearby flammables, because this sucker is on the verge of igniting! It's an outrageous electric guitar, keyboard and drum workout. Honestly, music just DOES NOT get more exciting than this, and I would have gladly paid the full price for this collection even if LISTEN HERE was the only worthwhile cut on it - it's THAT good!
Most of the remaining tunes are taken from Auger's 'OBLIVION EXPRESS' days of Jazz/Rock/Funk fusion. Very 1970s - but in a good way. . . .if you can overlook some of Alex Ligertwood's strained and emotionally-overwrought vocals on a couple of numbers. The last 3 songs feature Auger with his son and two daughters on contemporary recordings. They're OK.
The only disappointments are in the enclosed booklet which contains numerous errors in the commentary and credit listings, making it of limited value. And more importantly : Auger's most in demand tune (which initiated my interest in Jazz in 1978) was the funky Wes Montgomery compostition, 'BUMPIN' ON SUNSET'. This became Auger's signature tune. Playing it live, the band took it at a quicker pace which enhanced the catchy, soulful groove, making it more pronounced. Thus, my favorite version of 'BUMPIN' ON SUNSET' appears on the now unavailable, 'LIVE OBLIVION' album. The version included on AUGER RHYTHMS is neither the live cut, nor the original studio recording, but a previously unreleased take which is too slow and very inferior to both of the others.
I rarely award 5 Stars to anything, but if AUGER RHYTHMS had used the live 'BUMPIN' ON SUNSET', I wouldn't have hesitated for a moment to bestow 5 Stars on it. But it's still a great collection as is, and I dare say that if you can't find much to enjoy on this, then you need to have the authorities release an All-Points-Bulletin because somebody has absconded with your musical "soul." Hey, you there. . .are you LISTENing HERE?
Here is the Godfather of the B3 Hammond Organ!!!.......2004-09-30
The compilation gives you a dose of his bands from his past and his new oblivion express (One of the greatest live shows that you could ever see), also comes w/a 32 page booklet of liner notes. Brian is a living legend and if you are lucky enough to catch their show you will know exactly what I mean. Songs like 'light my fire' by the doors, sung by Julie Driscoll and 'indian ropeman'are some of the highlights of the cd.
Brian Auger's Incredible!.......2004-01-24
Not many people are as hip as they should be to this monster of the Hammond B3! This is as complete a history of Brian's career that has ever been assembled with a 32 page booklet with great photos from Brian's personal collection. What's most surprising are some never before released sides by Auger in early swingin' London jazz venues. This guy is truly gifted and it shows!
If you dig the B3 scene it doesn't get much better than this.
Highly recommened!

Customer Reviews:
The First Song Is Great The Rest Are Just Alright.......2007-06-16
I purchased the CD because of all the positive reviews that it received from other customers who heard it but to be honest the first song was the only one that I found to be exceptionally good. The rest of the songs were simply alright and to me that was far less than what I expected considering how good the entire tape supposedly was.
Great Music.......2005-09-27
I have had the pleasure of hearing Deborah and Third Logic before their album, and also meeting them and having them on a local TV show I produced. They have a wonderful sound that you can definitely groove to. You will not be dissapointed with this CD at all. I hope that they are working on a new CD and the growth of Deborah as an artist is shown.
Don't Sleep!.......2005-04-18
I saw Deborah open for Kem and I was blown away by her voice and her band! So, I rushed off to buy this CD! I'm sorry it took me so long to write a review because she deserved it long ago! You will not be disappointed with Ms. Bond's performance on this project...she gives you music for the soul, music to chill out to and music to think on? A powerful, soulful delivery and yet she got no promotion! This CD is all that and a bag of chips with a side of dill pickles! It is in heavy rotation, still!
This is grown people's music...and she delivers it with side orders and dessert!
Wonderful piece of soul music!.......2005-01-05
Dayafter" by Deborah Bond is nothing short of an instant classic. Would we expect any less from a chanteuse who lists Chaka, Sade, and Anita as her influences? Even then, she delivers with a powerful voice that establishes her own style. "Givin Up" is my kind of laid back, mellow groove. The vibe set by this track makes you wanna chill and leave your worries for tomorrow! Also, I'm feelin' "Don't Waste Your Time" where she cautions a friend on relationship issues. Words, sounds, and power are the direction Deborah takes with her music. On love issues, how about "Keep On" which boasts sensuality and passion as something to be cherished? Deborah Bond is backed by her band 3rd Logic. They have that deep, soulful sound the masses will adore and hold to heart.I place them in high regard like Fertile Ground, N'Dambi, Erykah Badu and others. In the years to come when we are too old to dream, we'll remember Deborah's beautiful sound and her timeless music will keep us young. DJ Come of Age

Excellent CD.......2004-12-27
This CD is marvelous and it is so ridiculous that so many people don't know who she is. She has a wonderful, soulful, and mature voice. Wonderful singer. Truly, if you appreciate Jill Scott, Goapele, and Erykah Badu, you'll love Deborah Bond. I saw her in D.C. when she opened for Goapele and she was outstanding. My husband and I purchased her CD based on that performance. She was awesome live and just as amazing on the album.

Buy It Before It Disappears from the Planet.......2005-08-01
I am not a big fan of compilations or even Haitian music but this one is killer and it has become a desert island CD for me. I have lost the cover art but I believe that the film director Jonathan Demme put together this incredible collection. Sixty-two minutes of diverse Haitian music.

Great Group!.......2006-06-06
I purchased their first CD, Spiritual Warfare, a few years ago when I saw them live in Baltimore. They are just as awesome live as they are on the CD. I own all of their works including Remixed which was sold overseas before it came to the US. It too is awesome. Their music is a blend of so many genres and the messages are always positive. They are the breath of fresh air needed!
ya'll late.......2006-06-05
If I could rate this album 10 stars,I would. I have been a fan since they used to play @ Morgan homecomings 1999 and eyond. As fellow Morgan University Graduates, I must give that home grown flavor much love!! With Maysa trading vocals with the ever so soulful and beautiful N'Vasha - superb. This will only get airplay on a quiet storm on a college radio station -like WEAA 88.9 Morgan State University radio--or even WHUR in DC (Howard University). They are the epitome of 'underground' and grew from word of mouth. I love the track titled - Culture Bandits--it perfectly describes the way the industry violates the music of today, but Fertile Ground, as well as other artists in the 'neo-soul' movement (I really HATE that term) make music for the love of music, not the fanfare, not the fame, or notoriety. I love them for that...and to see them live is a spiritual and soul-stirring experience. I wish other artist would take a lesson from them--be real--to yourself, and not be SELLOUTS!!!
Peace and Blessings,
Tina
Outstanding!.......2005-09-06
I was pleasantly surprised at the genious of this album. I am shocked that there is no radio play. This group is cutting edge.
Excellent CD.......2005-05-28
My friend came back with this CD from NY, 3 years ago, and I was amazed!!! The whole CD is strong. I still listen to it 3 years later. Amazing voice and instrumentals.
i had no business buying this..........2005-02-20
... i had a few extra bucks (no fareal such a thang tho, is it??) in my pocket and wasnt really expeckin to buy anything... just nosing around the local underground-music-record-store.
fumbled thru some r&b...
bumbled thru some hiphop...
mumbled over some reggae... then
stumbled across these cats.
(they was mixed in with 'house' & 'drum & bass' section... i 'ont know why... these folks is definitely NOT anything like house or dnb; not with this album anyway!)
anyway... i got to sample this before i purchased it... and i was (insert a word you caint say around yo mama anem) blown away!
not 'heavy and loud' blown away... but as blown away as downtempo, my-mellow-my-man-jazzfunk can blow a big brotha like me away... ...soft and focused.
yeah, very jazzy... jazz, um, ish... too much groove to be smoove-jazz... too underground-lounge to be some neosoul wannabe.
if you was gonna take the love of your life out to some late night coffee house for the friday open mic, then, these are the folks who'd be warmin the stage up when all the spitkickers got done reciting they flows, feal me?
some real nice laid backness....

Album Description
This recording leaves the listener breathless and astounded by the musical richness of this small area of Africa. In these performances from remote areas of central Ghana, the collective musical genius of everyday farmers, fisher-folk, traders, and civil servants bursts forth. Their singing and chanting moves through a colorful palette of instruments including water drums, rectangular frame drums, side-blown horns, and brass bands. Clear, penetrating sounds of metal instruments offset by complex drumming patterns are framed by haunting vocals. Listeners are immersed in a kaleidoscope of sound. Thirteen tracks and 28 page booklet including extensive notes and photos. This is the only commercially available recording of Akan music.
Customer Reviews:
Great Disc.......2007-06-30
This is a great disc. I whole heartedly review with the former reviewer -- there is so much diversity to just the music of Ghana alone that there is no way to classify it all under one category. So you will need to stretch out and purchase a bunch of different discs with various different styles. This is a good one.
More great music from Ghana. .......2004-11-20
This is a disc completely worthy of your money and time. In case you have family, historical, and/or geographical reasons for wanting to know, the music on this disc is from Ghana's Central Region (not actually in the center of Ghana though, "Central Region" is the name of... for lack of a better term... a state in Ghana). The music is by (and from their areas of the Central Region) Assin, Efutu, Denkyira, and Fante peoples. All are Akan groups except the Efutu, "whose languages belong to the Guan cluster of the Kwa branch". Obviously I got this from the liner-notes, as I am no expert on all the many... and there are MANY... different languages and cultures of Ghana.
As for the music itself, I've had this disc for a couple weeks now and I'm loving it more with each listen. It is a very fine collection of recordings! I didn't get to the liner-notes until yesterday. It was interesting to find out that the Efutu are not Akan, since I had already noticed a distinct difference between the feel of their music and the other (although also differing) musics here. For those with some hip-hop interest, the Efutu track here makes me feel like they are playing some sort of ancient ancestor of a Timbaland beat. I like it alot. =)
There is alot for which to be thankful on this disc, and if you've ever stumbled upon my reviews for a few other cds from Ghana (the Master Drummers of Dagbon 1 & 2, and the Master Fiddlers of Dagbon), you'll be interested in knowing that this disc is completely different from those. Unfortunately, oftentimes things are lumped under the monolithic label of being "African music", but that is so broad as to be almost meaningless, considering the degree of musical diversity even in just one small country like Ghana. If you have the Masters discs I just mentioned, and you're worried about buying this one and feeling like it'd just be more of the same, don't worry. This is a whole other world.
The singing here has a much more organized feel than that on the Masters discs. Also, this disc always has larger groups of singers. It is more of a central feature of the music as well. Some lovely "chorus" vocals, sometimes in the form of interplay with the drumming. What you'll think of the brass band tracks (just a couple), I do not know. I like them, but I'm a weirdo. The first one strikes me almost as William Parker-ish orchestrations of his interpretation of the timbre of a bleating goat. I mean that in a good way. Also the percussion on that track is fantastic! I'm not sure how they are getting this tone, but it's like controlled, perfectly timed fireworks exploding in the distance.
Rather than rambling further, I will wrap this up by saying you probably didn't stumble on this cd by accident, so this sort of thing already interests you. Go ahead and pick this one up because I'm sure you're going to love it.
1979 field recordings from the Akan coastal areas of Ghana.......2004-03-09
Field recordings of Akan folk music from the Central and Western Regions of Ghana made by ethnomusicologist Roger Vetter in 1979. In this respect the disk is more narrowly homogeneous than some similar ones: only the Central and Western Regions are represented, although the bulk of the Akan population of Ghana lives in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. And, obviously, if it is a disk of Akan music, it does not include music produced by other ethnic groups in Ghana.
What the disk lacks in geographical and ethnic diversity, it makes up in stylistic reach. The music in these recordings is played by non-professional and semi-professional players, and although most of the music is quite traditional (i.e. shows little European influence) some tracks include instruments that originated outside Africa such as the tuba or the electric guitar, and some of the repertoire including waltzes and gospel music show a Western influence transmogrified in the local milieu. In this regard the recordings are authentic: the variety of music produced for local performance and consumption in the Akan coastal regions of Ghana was (and remains) varied, reflecting a variety of cultural uses and influences. While most of the music on this disk was meant for dancing, one of the most interesting tracks is a talking drum piece in which the message is not only played but recited, allowing one to hear the translation from speech to drumming. The accompanying booklet documenting the cultural background, the players, their instruments, and the various musical styles is highly informative.

Smoothjazz.com Review.......2004-11-17
Here's a colorful guitar album that deserves to be in your Smooth Jazz collection -- It's got all the ingredients you're looking for; great melodies, energy, groove, passion, and award-winning world-class musicianship. I definitely listened the first time to this disc with a biased ear, having thoroughly enjoyed "Turning Point," his most recent release prior to this one. (LICENSE TO PLAY is Adkins' 4th album release.) Jim's playing reminds me a lot of Lee Ritenour, Ken Navarro, and, at times, Larry Carlton. Good company to keep! LICENSE TO PLAY is loaded with radio-friendly tunes from this talented Virginian, the first of which, "Ocean Breeze," is sure to garner tons of airplay. On my first listen through the album I marked several other tracks as favorites as well, namely ""Where Will You Go," "Candlelight Dance," and "Nightfall." Then, on subsequent listens, I ended up marking pretty much the rest of the album! When I audition a new album, I categorize it in terms of 1) Whether it fits into the Smooth Jazz groove; 2) Whether it will sound strong on the "air"; and 3) Whether I'll want to include it in my personal library of favorites. LICENSE TO PLAY is a winner in all three categories. This album deserves plenty of attention from Smooth Jazz radio and fans alike. No doubt about it, Jim Adkins will soon be a household name in the Smooth Jazz genre. LICENSE TO PLAY should move that agenda along quite nicely! ~Scott O'Brien
