Customer Reviews:
For those new to the scene..........2001-05-07
This is by far one of THE best DJ Mixes/compilations in my possesion. I don't know who did the mixing, but I feel its pretty flawless. The Ministry of Sound is actually a club in England AND a group of DJs tied together by the fact that they have spun there. (at least this is my understanding)
I feel what sets this 2 CD comp apart is its superior choice of song selection and mixing. Those really are the two most important things when it comes to albums like this. I would say this album fuses together the perfect mix of house and trance, with a little bit of electronica put in ala Chemical Bros.
For me to say whether a mix album is good or not, I simply have to ask myself the question, "Do I only like tracks x, y, and z? Or, could I seek to any part of the album and really get into it?" NEVER by a mix album if you DONT LIKE EVERY PART OF THE MIX. The skill of a club DJ is in the song selection and cross fading abilities.
And again, for those wondering what type of techno they can expect, I would say the first disc definetly emphasizes House music, with even some Garage mixed in (look at track 8). If the first disc doesn't make you LOVE house, then nothing will. The end of the first disc starts hitting upon hard house (look at track 17). The second disc has more progressive house/trance leanings. This is where the two genres (of house and trance) most closely merge. Especially pay attention to the end of the first album, which I would say is the apex of the collection.
Which brings me to my final point. This album takes you on a journey. It really does. Some people I know listen to mix albums by pressing the 'seek' button until they get to that special bass drop or build up. In the MOS millenium edition, the DJ knows when to turn down the tempo, when to build it up, and when to break it down.
GET THIS ALBUM.
Big hits, mixed with mediocre fillers.......2001-03-19
This two-disc collection along with a booklet basically sums up the club music of 1999, or at least as much of it as I know. Being new to the club music scene, I'm not one to say what songs should or shouldn't be on here. However, the selections of MoS regulars, Judge Jules and Tall Paul, do a good job of getting you moving. The hits on here are the biggest of the chart-toppers from 99, but some of the songs between these hits lag. Also, some of the mixes of the songs don't really do justice to the original. For example, the version of DJ Jean's "The Launch" gives only a small sample of the beat from the original that made the song such a big hit. In general, the peaks of the songs, the sections that we all know, are far too short. For many of the songs, like "Burnin Up" and "Toca Me," the peaks could have been doubled and they still would have been great. Overall, this collection is a fun mix of songs that get things pumping. Just be close to a remote so that you can skip some of the slower tracks and repeat your favorites again and again!

Opus Is Magnificent.......2002-08-22
The Austrian band, Opus, had emerged in the early 1980s, breaking onto the US music scene with their single, "Live is Life" in 1984. Although they did not appeal to the American public in large numbers, they did manage to establish a devoted fan base who continued to follow their career which continues today. I am one of those few American fans. Straddling the pop/rock borderline with catchy, well-written and well-played compositions, Opus is a highly talented band that was continually denied the American media attention they so richly deserved. Listen to the environmentally-sensitive tunes "Whiteland" or "Every Now and Then" and understand that they were well ahead of their time in progressive lyric construction. Original line-up included: Ewald Pfleger, Herwig Rudisser, Gunter Grasmuck, Niki Gruber, and Kurt-Rene Plisnier. Purchase this album and re-discover a "lost" band with superb talent and great music, hence their name, OPUS. -Mark Serour, Fort Collins, Colorado

I need More Miles.......2005-08-24
More Miles Per Hour is one of the best rock albums of 79 but never reedited on CD and others great albums of John Miles. On this compilation appears some great songs of MMPH. John Miles is the best and please reedited all discography with bonus tracks.
As they say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad..........2004-11-28
Music (thank you), Highfly (thank you). As a former midwest rock radio personality, I can honestly say I'm disappointed. One song that was most requested back in the 80's is missing in action - "Where Would I Be Without You". For that, I wouldn't recommend the expense in obtaining this.
not include "you have it all" ?.......2000-08-10
I am wondering why he doesn't put "you have it all" in this album, actually this song made me deeply impressed for the first time I know about him.
John Miles is still nr 1.......2000-06-26
The whole cd is just wonderful to listen to.The song (Music was my first love, and it will be my last)is so powerful.i have loved that song for so many years.John Miles is still nr 1.

Good Starter Album.......2004-08-13
This is a good album for any beginner who wants a taste of Liza. It shows many sides to her beautiful voice and emotional interpretation of songs.
Import version of Liza's "Foursider".......2002-12-26
For anyone mourning the demise of Liza's A&M "Foursider" package, here it is with a new look! It's a this-'n-that compilation of her work for the label, including Liza's wonderful live version of "Everybody's Talkin'"(from the "Olympia" concert album), the heart-melting "Waiting For My Friend", "Come Saturday Morning" from 'Sterile Cuckoo'(sung in character as Pookie Adams), the pithy "Love Story", and a lovely, sentimental reading of "Leavin' On A Jet Plane". A worthy collection for all us vinyl die-hards.
Supercharged LiZa.......2000-06-03
This is one of Minelli's BEST albums, full of energy like we all know her, she's the female Sinatra at it's best. Wonderfull music like only Liza can bring I caught her show at Bally's hotel in Las Vegas, and was very impressed to see her live Anyone who loves LIZA,get your hands on this album before it runs out of stock!

i love the song especially in the movie version where liza and joel grey fantastically performed this song.
because of the effect it had on me- all those years, i would like to use this soundtrack as the fitting theme song for our forthcoming management conference, themed: make much more money.
it's a real classic! it's fantastic! superb! what more can i say...

Customer Reviews:
Grand mix of dance songs from 1975 up to 2000.......2002-03-17
Ben Liebrand is a well-known DJ from my mother country The Netherlands. He became famous as a disc-jockey through his mini-mixes (a mix based on a single song), which played on the Dutch national radio on Friday-evenings. At the end of each year he would make a Grandmix - a mix of the best dance songs of that particular year.
The Grandmix - Millenium Edition consists of 3CDs with the best dance songs from 1975 up to 2000. Each CD has a playtime of about one hour, giving a playtime of about 1.5 minute per song. Since Ben Liebrand's mixing technique is based on BPM (beats-per-minute) and not scratching and sampling, you can enjoy your favorite childhood/teenage dance song. (I better stop here since I am showing my age.)
For people that enjoy these CDs I also recommend the summer edition, which is based on the same principle by the same mastermixer. For fans I recommend Ben Liebrand's website (Liebrand.nl) on which he explains his mixing techniques and equipment used.
Unbelievable!!.......2001-12-01
Each time you listen it's as good as the first. Songs are not overplayed and the mixes are amazing. Buy now before it's too late. I'm sure there were a limited number made. I used to keep many cd's in my car but now I only keep all three Grandmixes. You will enjoy many times over.

Another great collection from 20th century.......2005-05-21
This is a fine, concise collection of New Edition's career from the mid-80s to late 90s. All of their big hits are here, including 'Cool It Now', 'If It Isn't Love' and 'I'm Still In Love With You'.
This is another excellent collection from 20th Century Masters who keep their collections short in length (generally 40 to 60 minutes), but always high in quality.
Another excellent NE collection!.......2005-04-06
This was another New Edition compilation I saw, a little different from last year's 70-minute collection, Hits. But this one has 11 songs and is only 44 minutes. I think this is for those who can't get through the longer release or people still hooked onto Backstreet or NSYNC, but needs to know who was doing it first--NE. But this is just as superb, as NE's most familiar hits are represented, from Cool It Now to Telephone Man, to Little Bit of Love, to If It Isn't Love, to Rain to Hit Me Off and I'm Still in Love With You. Fully entertaining in its short span, and the mastering and sounds are so clear on here! You can hear the harmonies on everything. The 20th Century Masters series did a nice job on this group's album and the right 11 songs were chosen!

Created for the performance area situated at the center of London's Millennium Dome, Ovo is an ambitious concept piece that attempts to address the stages of human evolution through a family saga. That it fails is not all that surprising, given the project it's associated with. Never one to be intimidated by a concept or a challenge (see Genesis, the early years, or The Last Temptation of Christ), Gabriel may have been the ideal choice for a multicultural, technology-focused show, and his general instincts seem sound. But even Cirque du Soleil, whose work this most resembles, never had to contend with the blending of Gaelic folk and tribal overtones, techno-futuristic soundscapes, gentle ballads, or a sludgy reworking of "Digging in the Dirt," complete with a rapped story line. Though there are some fine, interesting moments here, they're too often lost in the shuffle--which sounds as much like a requiem for the Dome as it does for Ovo. --Randy Silver

Millenium hopes.......2003-08-11
I ordered this special import thinking it was a live CD of the now legendary millenium show. In case you are harboring similar misconcenptions, it's not live. It's the OVO album with a few extras. It has an OVO rap single (you may or may not like it), a fairly cool color booklet with pictures from the show and some PC extra video from the show--abstract looking aerial shots of show choreography.
If you already have the standard OVO disc, you won't be getting much new here. It all depends on how serious a collector you are. Fortunately, I hadn't bought OVO yet, so the import, though a little pricey, filled the bill. Unlike some Peter Gabriel fans, I happen to like OVO very much. I think it is one of the most interesting and innovative musical projects he has designed. Hopefully one day he will release a DVD of the show (certainly someone must have filmed it!). It was an historic occasion, apparently a very big show, and many of us Gabriel fans across the world were unable to see it.
C'mon Peter. Share the fun.
OVO/Millennium -- underrated and worth discovering.......2002-10-28
... Taken in the right light, this underrated set of compositions is worth discovering and should satisfy Gabriel fans who enjoyed Last Temptation or, even more so, Birdy (except that this is all original material).
It would have been nicer to have Peter take all the lead vocals, given that his voice is one of his best strengths. However, he appears more director than performer in the project, playing and arranging the music rather than being the rock star behind the mic, and his vocal stand-ins, Ritchie Havens and Paul "Blue Nile" Buchanan, are perfect analogs for him. Standout tracks are "Downside Up," " Make Tomorrow," "The Time of the Turning," and the hard-edged "The Tower That Ate People."
Millennium makes a better listening experience, so I'd start with it if buying it for the first time, but people who already bought OVO don't really need to trade up. Millennium gives a better package (comic book for the kids, cardboard slipcover, different artwork, expanded CD booklet with photos and commentary on the Millennium Dome Show) and improves the playing sequence slightly by adding a brief extra tune, the celebratory marching-band number "The Tree That Went Up," while placing "The Story of OVO" rap on a separate CD single. This also features the same video clip of the Show, scored with "Nest that Sailed the Sky," as that on both versions of the album. The brief time-lapse video can't do the Show justice but is still lovely to watch and the only way most people will ever get to see it.
OVO/Millennium is great listening, especially once the details of the story are sorted out. The atmospheric, polyrhythmic, mostly instrumental melodies shouldn't be considered a commercial follow-up to Us, but they fit nicely in the sequence of Gabriel's music, continuing his same rough alternation between pop album and non-commercial project.
The great "lost" album in PG's career.......2002-10-01
Because it is an import-only soundtrack to an obscure project,
"Ovo" was completely overlooked in the USA, where most people believe his first studio project since "Us" was the 2002 ambient instrumental soundtrack "The Long Walk Home", and then finally the proper rock/pop followup "Up" which has now just been released. However, like all Gabriel projects "Ovo" is an essential purchase, and one which will delight and surprise in unexpected places. First, although it is the soundtrack to the "Millenium Dome" project, it is not an instrumental work--8 of its 12 cuts feature lyrics and vocals, which would make it the proper studio followup to "Us" (indeed, several of the songs for this and "Long Walk Home" actually derive from the initial sessions for "Up"), the only deviation being that Gabriel chose several other singers to work with him on his songs. Second, it has a narrative storyline, which would be the first time he has attempted such a thing since Genesis' "The Lamb" (or maybe the abandonded late 70s concept "Mozo"). Thus, "Ovo"'s ambitions are indeed quite grand; the amazon[.com] reviewer is right in that it is at times over its head, with bright moments getting lost in a tapestry that may be a little *too* eclectic, but there are more than just a few "OK" songs here.
The only real regret I have about "Ovo" is that, although I like Paul Buchanan, Richie Havens and Elizabeth Frazer, I think Gabriel should've taken the lead on every track and used them only for backup vocalists. This would have made the album sound more consistent, for his voice is still supreme and these are his songs; they all bear his stamp so vividly that even when someone else is singing, I hear Peter. The songwriting is very strong, the melodies are as melodic and the rhythms as innovative as ever, with all of it reminding one of his past work while pointing to a further evolution of the sound: one
unexpected feature of the album is that while Gabriel has been particularly fond of Middle Eastern and North African world music elements in his music for nearly two decades now, in the attempt to be truly global for "Ovo"'s millenial aspirations, elements of indigenous Western forms are blended to the mix to
create a fusion unique to the record but that would then inspire the sound of the following "Up".
Highlights include the touching minimal piano ballad "Father Son" (which could be on any of his albums), the grindingly energetic and innovative techno-rocker "The Tower That Ate People" (a potential hit if only it had been promoted more), the graceful opening "Low Life", "Downside-Up" (Frazer's best moment here) and the 10 minute (!) closing "Make Tomorrow", an epic which involves all four singers and the kind of atmospheric, multi-sectional writing that would mark "Up". This edition of the CD is better than the other, which opens with a rap rendition of "The Story Of Ovo" that is unnecessary, and is replaced with the innocuous but better-fitting instrumental "The Tree That Went Up". I don't understand the couple of reviewers who charge this album is boring--"Long Walk Home"'s ambient instrumentals may have provoked a snooze or two, but "Ovo" is constantly changing styles, moods and singers, and at least one track ("The Tower That Ate People") ranks with his toughest and most danceable rockers. In short, "Ovo" is a great PG album, and makes a good pair with "Up"; I just wish he had sang all the leads.
Unexpected and Superb - I reveled in this album........2001-11-07
I think that the true measure an album's greatness is how often I listen to it and how many tracks I skip over. I bought this album online from RealWorld overseas, the day it became available. I have listened to it countless times in the months since then (over a year now, I think). I never tire of it and I never skip tracks.
It's not all Gabriel. He appears on several tracks but not all of them. This is very much a group effort. He has chosen a group of singers each of whose voices is immedately distinctive and beautiful, yet all of whom fit in perfectly with his of music. Paul Buchanan, Elisabeth Fraser, Richie Havens, Alison Goldfrapp, and others.
Gabriel did write all the music and lyrics on the album and it shows. From the soft opening notes of "Low Light" (I still want to know what those Gaelic lyrics mean!) until the closing chorus of "Make Tomorrow" this album is Pure Gabriel. In my opinion, it's the best work he's done since "Passion". It's not quite the collection of singles that "So" was nor does it evoke the atmosphere of "Passion". Still it is super. This album is sometimes catchy and melodic, other times moody, but always superb.
If you liked "So", if you absolutely loved "Passion", I think you will love "Ovo" as well. To me, those three albums represent the peaks of Peter Gabriel's solo career.
By the way, prefer THIS version of the album (the limited edition version with the red and blue "tower" cover), over the American version (the one with the green cover). This version has an extra track and wisely dispenses with "The Story Of Ovo" track (and relegates a terrible rap version of it to a separate disc where it belongs). It's the only bad thing about the American version.
