A towering figure in postwar American music, for over 40 years James Brown has written, produced, and performed some of the most compelling R&B ever recorded. 20 All Time Greatest Hits! distills Startime!, itself a four-CD set that barely scratched the surface of Brown's prodigious output. As such, this collection concentrates on Brown's best-known records: "I Feel Good," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "Cold Sweat." The propulsive one- or two-chord vamps with Brown's hoarse, declamatory vocals laid the groundwork for modern funk. It's a perfect starter set for anyone unfamiliar with Brown's work. But be warned--Brown is addictive. Like peanuts and potato chips, it's impossible to stop with just one. Buy this and don't be surprised if one day you find yourself scouring used record bins for a rare copy of Grits and Cornbread. --Steven Mirkin

Nice Hits Package.......2007-05-16
More James Brown than most casual fans need, but the price is right for the extra cuts. Look up funk in the dictionary -- it says James Brown!
Git On Uppa.......2007-05-09
This CD arrived on a Saturday before my husband and I started out on one of our weekend joy rides ( At over $3.20 a gallon there is just slightly less joy). We slipped the disc in and right from the very opening notes we were possessed. What a performer. We nearly had to pull the car over and start dancing, we COULD NOT sit still.
I love it when Brown gets so worked up he literally squeals with excitement, it send chills up your spine. I would think that listening to this CD would be more effective than medication for the manic depressive personality.
Pretty Much of Historical Interest Only.......2007-04-14
I found James Brown fairly boring back in the day, and I must admit I still find him fairly boring. Back then though I couldn't have predicted that this kind of music would evolve into fusion or Steely Dan pop. It's probably a large exaggeration to say that James Brown and his musicians invented funk, but it may be reasonable to say that they were its chief--or most visible at least--exemplars.
The instrumental parts are of much more interest than James Brown's quasi-parlando, repetitive vocals. The sound quality is generally better than I expected, and the instrumental parts are generally performed cleanly, but the horns are a bit off in "Make it Funky". There is another tune here in which it sounds as if a horn section crescendo is achieved artificially by riding the faders (on the mixing board)--a disagreeable effect.
These must be some of the silliest lyrics ever written, and I find "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" especially amusingly ridiculous. "Try Me" is supposed to be James Brown's breakthrough tune, but it sounds to me like an utterly conventional, undistinguished fifties recording. At least three of these tracks are essentialy one piece with differing lyrical snippets.
Definitely a must have!.......2007-04-12
I have been enjoying James Brown for over 50 years.
This CD contains MOST of the songs that I have loved and danced to for years. An excellent collection. Whew!

Mr. Dynamite goes to Harlem.......2007-07-25
With the passing of James Brown at the end of 2006, the lost one of its most its most powerful musical fores, a sweat-soaked juggernaut of white-hot passion and burning soul. For proof of that, consult this very album. Recorded late in 1962, when Brown was still a relative lightweight (commercially speaking), Live at the Apollo is a sizzling slice of raw soul, collection of breathless R&B stompers and heart-shredding ballads that put the Godfather on the musical map long before he got around to inventing funk.
The album captures Brown hooting, hollering, crooning, screaming, and tearing his way thorugh a setlist that hits the highlighs of his early career. He attacks the songs with a seemingly endless supply of energy and ferocity- At one point, he sings a medley of something like nine songs in just over six minutes! It's somewhat hard to believe that his band could even keep up with him, but- okay, actually it's not. They're awesome- their raw, slashing guitars, smooth horns, and tight backing vocals drive Brown on, pushing him to new heights of fantabulousness with every passing note. Combine that with the sounds of a rapt audience (James Brown always got the best audiences), and you've got a platter of can't-fail musical explosiveness. The afformentioned medley is only one of the deliciously crazy tracks here: there's also "Night Train," in whih Brown manages to sound absolutely electric, even though he's doing nothing but listing the names of cities. "I'll Go Crazy" and "I Don't Mind" comes ripping out of the gates with gutteral guitars and dizzying vocal acrobatis, while "Think" sees the star of the show making chop suey out of the English language. Delicious, delicious chop suey. And when Brown slows things down, it's only to rip your heart out with a ballad- "Try Me" is instant gratification, and the epic version of "Lost Someone" (over ten minutes) is simply gorgeous, a soul-shreddingly cathartic bit of group therapy (again, listen to that audience!) disgued as a song.
So......... get it! Play it! Live the 'xperience!
Black Music Treasure.......2007-07-11
This album is a must have for any R&B music catalog. Black music has been forever changed by the performances and performer on this album in 1962.
During the racially chargered violence of the 60's this performance was an escape from the absolute madness of society, giving the concert goers a night of unbelievalbe entertainment from an unbelievably great performer.
Many artist such as Prince and Michael Jackson were not even born yet, when this concert took place, yet thier careers have flourish behind the influence of James Brown electricfying and near breath taking performances.
The album doesnt get 5 stars because I thought the album's performances were redundant. James performs some of the same songs 3 times in the show. The concert is rather short, less than 1 hour. I'm assuming when you do 300 dates a year you can't afford to have 3 hour concerts.
Great album that will forever stand the test of time. Album of musical history that should be a blue print as to how the 21st centuries artist should create and/or put on live shows.
Look toward Prince and Michael Jackson who emulate James Brown... these two artist from James have influences a life time of music to come.
NOT FUNK... BUT STILL CRRRRAAAAAZZZZZY.......2007-02-07
For a lot of reasons this album is pretty much what made James Brown not just an icon of his day.. but for many days to come... and these reasons have to do with politics, as well as music so I'll stay away from them,.. however James Brown is certainly a name that willl never be forgotten at Harlems Apollo Theater.
This album was recorded live in 1962, when James Brown was still exclusively The Soul Brother no.1. He hadn't started developing his funk yet, however had already been tearing up the charts for sometime (mid fifties?) and was rapidly building a reputation as an amazing live performer. In order to prove that it wasn't just hype, Brown recorded this show at The Apollo (an excellent way to nationalize their name in the process, I'd have to say) and released it about a year later.
It's true that James Brown had a solid run of hit singles on the radio for over ten years.. but to hear that stuff in comparison to his live recordings always pales. No matter what era of James Brown you listen to.. the hit singles just ain't half as exciting as a complete live show.. and this proves it. I'LL GO CRAZY is amazing, one of the all time best performances of a song, ever.. and from here we go into a non stop frenzy, which, if you are seasoned to James Brown, may sound a little out dated, but no doubt as wild as his squeeeezieest funk juices. In typical James Brown fashion the songs just keep coming,..no breaks, constant motion. The crowd gets involved too, screaming and clawin'.... songs meld into other songs, then back into the original songs, and then into medleys, that meld with other medleys.. and then finally it all finishes back at the start with I'll GO CRAZY, as if you never left it to begin with. The way James Brown put on a show in 1962 would eventually become the influence for not only any good soul show, but rock, jazz, funk, dance, etc.... they all wanted his chops... and that is mainly because of what is contained on this record.... Enter the Hardest working man in showbiz....
The greatest showman who ever lived..........2007-01-12
If you want to sample James Brown's music, start here. Then, maybe pick up his '20 Greatest Hits'. He was a man of amazing, incomparable talent. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert about six times from 1964 to 1969. You would have to see him live to appreciate it when you hear that he was the greatest showman who ever lived. To see him and hear him live is to love him. This may sound like an exaggeration, but all who have seen him live know what I am talking about.
THIS IS ONE LIVE ALBUM I'LL GIVE A SECOND LISTEN TO.......2006-12-29
now i am not keen on live albums because then i'll become too much of a skeptic. however, this album is an exception. first of all, IT'S JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMES BROWN.........BROWN..............BROWN!!!! secondly, that one elongated song that i cannot think of.................just listening to those ladies scream and moan...............MY GOODNESS!!!!! that song alone is enough proof for me that mr. brown was comatose when it came to the stage!!!! don't think so............ask michael jackson, usher, justin timberlake, janet jackson, and plenty, plenty others. if you recorded it, then out on the BET awards that year when they were honoring james and michael came out and surprised him. this is just a sample though, remember that.

This recording was produced more than 40 years ago, only in mono, but from the day it was released it was a deserved phenomenon. It out-grossed the mega-hit show for months, and it still holds the record for the most weeks as a Billboard Top 40 album: 292. The reasons are many. Start with the 20-year-old Julie Andrews in peak voice, singing no fewer than eight sensational Lerner and Loewe songs, soaring most memorably to high C in "I Could Have Danced All Night." Rex Harrison perfected the art of talk-singing in a clutch of equally captivating numbers written especially for his voice, of which the most indelibly delivered is "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." And Stanley Holloway brought the best English music-hall style to an eager American audience with "A Little Bit of Luck" and "Get Me to the Church on Time." There were no scene-changers in Frederick Loewe's best score, and Alan Jay Lerner managed to fashion his libretto and lyrics so close to the language of George Bernard Shaw (on whose play Pygmalion the musical was based) that experts couldn't tell where Shaw left off and Lerner took over. Every song created character and advanced the plot. My Fair Lady was a show you "got"--and still get--on first listening--without having seen it. The London cast album (with the same leads) can give you stereo; the movie version, a fuller orchestra, Harrison and Holloway in full sail, and Marni Nixon dubbing Audrey Hepburn. But the Broadway cast album is still the one to have, and the one absolute must in any musical collector's CD library. --Robert Windeler
Customer Reviews:
a flawless recording.......2007-07-29
in terms of musicals, some are beyond famous. along with The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Singin' in the Rain, Oklahom and The King and I ranks My Fair Lady. the story of eliza doolittle and henry higgens is beyond being a classic, its a legend. but why? and does it deserve such recognition?
for proof that My Fair Lady deserves all of its fame look no further than this cast album. this is a true gem of musical theater and every cast recording should be done this well.
SONGS
the music is great. its strength is in subtlety. the background orchestral pieces are all soft and the strength is placed on the performers, which works great. a lot of the strength here goes to the witty lyrics of "why can't the english" and "i'm an ordinary man" (basically rex harrison's pieces!) or the soft crooning lyrics of "I Could've Danced All Night" and "On the Street Where You Live." the songs are fresh, original and pretty well done here.
SONGS 5 out of 5
PERFORMERS
a lot of credit falls on the steller cast here since most of the focus is on them. harrison is wonderfully and witty as henry higgens. julie andrews is, well, perfect as eliza. she is the greatest eliza ever. her vocals are all brilliantly done. the rest of the cast succeds in bringing humor or romance to the show wherever it is required. this is a top-notch cast the easilly outdoes the 1964 movie. if for no other reason than the sheer energy that is captured here.
PERFORMERS 5 out of 5
most broadway fans should own this just because it's My Fair Lady, but beyond that, this is a great show and this album captures all that brilliance perfectly. if you need just one recording, THIS IS THE ONE!!!
Excellent Sound Track.......2007-06-27
I found My Fair Lady full of beautiful arrangements and excellent vocals. Can't get better then the sound of Julie Andrews!!!! Although Julie did not get the movie roll this makes me appreciate the movie even more.
Great gift!.......2007-06-01
Bought this as a gift for a friend.Received it quickly and she was delighted.
Good, but not for the Family.......2007-05-29
I initially really enjoyed the movie my fair lady and wanted a sound track so I could continue to enjoy the music. However, upon recieving the cd, I was especially disappointed with one aspect - the language. I knew Professor Higgins and others had used profanity on the film, and was ok with it. You hear it once and move on. However, I don't want a cd playing around my family that my kids are learning to dance, sing, and act out a song that has rather obvious swear words. After 1 listen I picked out at least three instances of swearing, the worst being I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face (my otherwise favorite song!) The song starts out d--n, d--n, d--n! It's shouted.
fantastic.............2007-05-16
MY FAIR LADY, one of the most well-loved and beautifully made musicals, was a definitive vehicle for the career of (then) twenty year old Julie Andrews, as the "loverly" Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle. Between Andrews' soaring soprano (which is especially poignant to hear, today, considering that she can no longer sing as she once did) and the great supporting cast, lead by Rex Harrison, as Dr. Henry Higgins, the bored professor who takes her under his wing as a special project to mold into a dignified lady, this is a five star show!
The story was actually based on PYGMALION, by the late, great playwright, George Bernard Shaw, inspired by Greek mythology. In the original Greek play, Pygmalion is the sculptor who creates a depiction of a woman, out of ivory, and falls in love with it. He prays to Venus, and then his sculpture is brought to life, as Galatea. In the musical, the gist is similar but the journey and characters veer from this concept considerably. For starters, no one starts out as a piece of stone--especially not Eliza Doolittle. She has definite opinions and a distinctive personality (saucy language and all), that Dr. Doolittle is very keen on shaping up for society. The music is perfectly in synch with the mood of this great play, which is in some ways a true parable about human behavior and the treatment of women in society. Some of the most beautiful music by Lerner and Loewe is featured here. The songs include "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face," and "Get Me to the Church On Time." This is brilliant. Buy this today! I am not sure how great the sound quality is on audio cassette, in comparison to the original recording on vinyl that I heard, as a little girl. I have a feeling it's pretty spectacular though!

"Going For Baroque".......2007-07-30
Whether you have cares you want to banish or not, you will delight in this CD. The album is perfectly balanced, and each piece moves seamlessly into the next, never jarring you to attention, but soothing you and leaving you feeling peaceful and relaxed. The album works well at the end of the day, but I have listened to it at the start of the day too, and it created a nice mood for a day just beginning to unfold.
I recommend this album for anyone wanting to enjoy a lovely, unpretentious, and relaxing interlude.
PLEASE BE AWARE.......2007-02-25
The audio samples given here are from the Vivaldi for Valentines CD in this same Philips series. NOT Bach.
The Vivaldi was great, though.

Light some candles, run a bubble bath, put in bath beads, pop this CD into your stereo and indulge in a bath that would mean you've pampered yourself in extremis. This particular recording from the popular Set Your Life To Classical series is a real treat for Bathtime, or in my opinion, anytime. It is indeed, as the title suggests, a relaxing serenade to wash your cares away. It is therapy, a perfect companion to a massage, reading a book, drinking tea, anything you can do alone to pamper yourself and to relax. Iona Brown, a female conductor, takes Sir Neville Marriner's place and conducts the Academy of St Martin In The Fields performing such works as the opening track - the Lute Concerto by Vivaldi as well as Track 4's Largo from the Winter movement in The Four Seasons, track 12's Concerto For Two Guitars by Corelli and the Oboe Concerto in D by Telemann. Also featured on here Oboe Concerti by Handel and Water Music Suite, and other conductors featured on here are Raymond Leppard and his English Chamber Orchestra. The Canon in D has never sounded more radiant than on here as it is conducted by Sir Neville Marriner and closes the CD nicely. A more relaxing way to take a bath you'll be hard-pressed to find. This music is gorgeous, it's affordable (on the Used Item section and the regular price) and is as always, a great intro to classical music and a fun, innovative way to enjoy it.
Cleansing Sounds To Wash Away Tensions.......2003-01-09
This is pleasing, pastoral music picked to relieve that which tenses up our bodies and souls.
Turn on this excellent baroque collection from the likes of Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel and Pachelbel (among others) superbly played by such virtuosos as Rampal, Holliger et al.
Sweeping instrumental arias are so relaxing! This one will soothe the savage beast as well as those tired bods.
Great Classical Music Series Gorgeous Music.......2002-12-22
The cd series "Set Your Life To Classical Music", composes a variety of baroque, classical and romantic instrumental music that serves the purpose of leisure and background while you engage in the day or evening's activities. The purpose is therapeutic. There are other titles in the series, such as "Bach For Breakfast", "Beethoven For Book Lovers" "Chopin And Champagne", "Baroque For Bedtime", "Puccini and Pasta", "Mozart For The Morning Commute", the series goes on and on. It is a great way to soothe your tensions and provides stress-free, nearly New Age style music that you'd more than likely hear at a masseur's place of business. One can also make the argument that this is the music you'd hear at an elevator. What I like about all these series is that they are also a great introduction to instrumental/classical music. The ensembles performing the classical works are virtuosic and well known in world of classical performance, such as Sir Neville Marriner and St. Martin In The Fields, I Musici and the New Age, Yani-style musician, Zamfir, who specializes in rare instruments such as pan pipes.
On this recording, specifically designed to accompany your bubble bath, there are beautiful, slower-paced movements from Baroque flute, violin and oboe concertos. There are the Sicilian style movements of such composers as Vivaldi, Bach and Telemann. The largo from the Winter movement is a richly melodic and dreamy piece for strings, and the concluding work, Canon In D Major, is an elegant, graceful and heartfelt chamber piece that has become iconic in Baroque music. It was used in the film, Ordinary People and is very popular in classical music for weddings. I strongly recommend all the cds in the series. They are a perfect way to get you into some of the most beautiful classical music ever written, and are a great way to involve music as the wordless, instrumental soundtrack in your life.

Amazon.com essential recording
It would seem impossible to summarize James Brown's contribution to R&B--to American music--in a mere four compact discs, but somehow Star Time does it. This boxed set charts Brown's early rise as a hard-hitting R&B-styled vocalist ("Please Please Please," "Try Me") and shows how his bandleading skills (one can't forget inventive players like saxophonist Maceo Parker, bassist Bootsy Collins, drummer Jabo Starks, and many others) changed the face of soul and invented funk in the '60s and early '70s with impeccably timed ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"), highly rhythmic ("I Can't Stand It"), primal ("Licking Stick Licking Stick") hits. The box also does a definitive programming job on Brown's more spotty later years--another plus. This is where beginners should start, but several extended versions and rarities (like "Papa," raised an octave on original release, at normal speed) make it a must for completists too. --Don Harrison
Customer Reviews:
It's Too Funky In Here.......2007-02-16
This is as close to a complete retrospective of James Brown's legendary recording career from 1956-1984 that will ever be available. The 71 tracks are from original session tapes or the original single and album masters. The sound quality - in particular on the oldest material - is outstanding.
The collection starts with Please, Please, Please (1956) and ends with Unity (Part I), which features Afrika Bambaata on co-vocals.
Some of my favorites are Try Me, Night Train, Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (Parts I, II & III), Bring It Up (Hipster's Avenue), Say It Loud - I'm Black And I'm Proud (Part I), Funky Drummer, Make It Funky (Part I), King Heroin and My Thang.
Along with bassist Bootsy Collins, Brown has worked with many dynamite musicians, led by long-time organist, Bobby Byrd. The saxophonists include Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Michael Brecker & Joe Farrell, with such trombonists as Randy Brecker, Fred Wesley & Jon Faddis bolstering Brown's signature Funk and R&B sounds.
You can count on one hand the true pathfinders in American popular music. There are three individuals who must be on every list; Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and The Godfather of Soul.
James Brown==Soul.......2007-02-09
James Brown has always been my favorite, but I was never able to find much of his music in the CD era before the internet exploded. Unfortunately, it took his death to remind me of how much I liked his sound. I've been on a buying spree since. Usually, after you get through the best 5-10 hits an artist has on one greatest hit collection, the rest is hum drum filler. I have to say that in the case of James Brown, the more I find the more I love the man!!! He is truly the progenitor of Funk and hip hop.
Should be in everyone's collection..........2006-12-31
Very rarely has the passing of a public figure made me feel such deep emotions as I felt this Christmas day when we lost James Brown. Although I was fortunate enough to see him live and in concert before, I was looking forward to seeing him again on December 28th at a NJ venue and had been lucky enough to get second row seats, but it was not to be. I can literally separate my music listening life into two distinct periods: BEFORE and AFTER I heard JB. Once I heard him everything changed, and I couldn't look at music the same again after hearing him. What I thought was funky or groundbreaking before seemed tepid and uninspired after I heard him. I distinctly remember hearing "Sex Machine" at a party one night and the proverbial light went off. Since that time I have purchased all the JB I can get my hands on, including this collection. The music and message of JB has become ingrained in who I am over the years and has shaped so much of my appreciation for music. JB fused elements of soul, R&B and jazz to lay the foundations of what would later be known as funk music, and then managed to create what would become (in my opinion) the most memorable and definitive funk music ever recorded. But the man didn't just make good time party music; he always had something to say, whether it be unabashed pronouncements of black pride or urging kids to stay in school or away from drugs. JB's influence was so far reaching it almost seems incomprehensible; VERY few recording artists have managed to sustain careers that spanned several decades and remained relevant. His influence was felt on other continents as evidenced in Fela Kuti's music in Nigeria and the creation of Afrobeat, which Fela himself confessed was directly influenced by the rhythms present on James Brown's recordings. JB even had a hand in the early rap scene when artists like Public Enemy began sampling his music on their tracks in the mid 1980's. (And lets not forget that JB was one of the first to rap back in the early 1970's, check out "King Heroin" on this collection if you need a refresher.) The music contained on these four discs is a well chosen overview of his incredible career. As a general warning though, this probably won't be the end of your James Brown collection. I have found that his music is so infectious that I have kept buying more and more of it over the years. However, any newcomer to his music will find this collection to be an excellent place to start, and really any and every music fan should own this. I've said it before and I'll say it again: you ain't human if this doesn't move you. This past summer I was in the heart of the inner city waiting outside of a fast food restaurant in the take out line with my windows down, and blasting a live version of the JB's tearing through "Pass The Peas". I slowly turned as I saw some movement out of the corner of my eye, as three men who had been asking for change got up and began to dance. They yelled "GODFATHAAA!", and ended up coming to my window to ask what CD the song was from or if it was the radio. I'm sure everyone who has been touched by his music has a story like this, because the music of James Brown was something that brought us all together as people. Thank you for all the memories and God Bless you Godfather.
The Comprehensive Box-Set Of The Godfather Of Soul!!.......2006-12-30
I had to write this review in lieu of the recent passing
of one of the latter 20th Century's greatest musical innovators!
James Brown was a revolutionary of music, of performance,
and with his bold "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing /
Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" socio-political statements
that came to black america at a time when they were really needed!
This box set is the most comprehensive collection of his
groundbreaking work that I know of!
I've owned this set now for about 14 yrs. and have
played it a billion times probably by now!
Yet it's still fresh, funky, energetic and positive!!--
And yes, it speaks of truth!!
This man was so far ahead of his time, yet OF HIS TIME!
In these last few days since his passing,
his music means even more to me!
He was given a funeral befitting royalty because he WAS ROYALTY!!
God Bless Your Soul Mr. Brown!! (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006)
Your gut-bucket funky grooves, your straight-from-the-heart messages
and your electric stage presence will be studied, emulated
and enjoyed by generations to come!
There'll never be another one!---R.I.P. GODFATHER!!
YOU WANNA KNOW TRULY WHERE THE FOUNDATION OF FUNK CAME FROM, THEN HEYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!.......2006-12-29

Coffee ? Eggs ? Bacon ? Bach ?.......2005-10-04
This recording is a delightful morning brew of Bach's most beautiful and atmospheric instrumental music, even making use of an instrument that most music scholars forget he even wrote music for - the harp, as in the SLonatas for Flute, Harp and Cello, which on this recording, sound positively radiant coming from the likes of Sir Neville Marriner's Academy of St Martin In The Fields or the English Chamber Orchestra. The opening track is the ever popular Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, mostly a featured piece in Wedding Ceremonies. The Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D, which I believe is marked "Overture" is regal and elegant. The English Suite No. 3 in G Minor is a lovely piece, as is the intimately slow andane of the Brandenbur Concerto No. 2. The Concerto for Violin and Panpies in D is a fresh new rendition. All in all, this is a very intimate CD, full of Baroque charm and romance. It is a fine way to start your day.
Gentle background music with lots of harp.......2005-06-26
In general, the Philips series "Set Your Life to Music" is one of the better, high-quality compilation series of classical music. This CD is a collection of Bach's Baroque-era music that is ideal for those unfamiliar to the often-intimidating world of classical music who mainly are looking for some pleasant and inspiring background music while learning a little about classical music. This Bach collection contains music that is rich in the soothing sounds of flute, harp, guitar and oboe along with a sampling of Bach's mild-mannered, songful orchestral music. Overall, the selections are all gentle and lyrical with a good sound quality. The concerto, oboe and orchestral works are some of Bach's finest compositions of sheer beauty and elegance and are performed by some of classical music's finest musicians. Some selections most everyone who has been ever been to a few weddings will recognize (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire). And no piece is as haughtingly lovely as the flute sonata slow movement (Siciliano) on track 5 - a highlight of the disc.
While 'classical purists' may raise their brow because of the many flute/harp selections (citing that Bach never composed any music for the harp), the person buying this CD for inspiring and relaxing mood music should be be delighted just fine with these "transcriptions" from piano to harp. The harp has a special niche for creating the most serene of atmospheres which it does not fail to do here. The solo Suite in E-flat was originally composed for solo violin but sounds much more smooth and dreamy on the harp - a piece very well done. However, some pieces are so serene that you might fall asleep at the breakfast table - hence, the sub-title "A leisurely way to start your day." Actually, it could easily be titled, "Bach for Bedtime" as the selections are all pretty relaxed and on the quiet side. So, if the hyper-energy of Mozart symphonies is too much for your mornings or if the sharp surges of Beethoven's music unsettle you, then these calmer Bach selections should be a better way to ease into the day.
If you like the flavor of Baroque music, "Bach for Book Lovers" in the same series is a good choice and has more solo piano selections for the piano lover. "Bach for Bedtime" is also a wonderful (non-duplicating) collection of some of Bach's most serene music and is also recommended. Perhaps the most calming and sedating music in this Philip's series is "Baroque for Bathtime" which can easily put you to sleep - in a good way - with or without the bath. All are high quality with well-selected pieces from the treasures of classical music's most influential composer of the Baroque era - Johann Sebastian Bach.
Excellent Compilation of Brilliant Music for Home Listening.......2004-01-26
You will love this CD! Like many of the CD's from this series, the music was carefully chosen for home listening. I just love playing this CD at home.
The "songs" on this CD and from the series were chosen from the vast and excellent Phillips classical music catalog. The sound, performances, and song selections are world-class.
A lot of great classical music is great for an evening at the concert hall but not very good for listening at home. The crescendos can be loud and the themes too intense. I would rather listen to a breathtaking Mozart piano sonata (solo piano) at home than a grand Mozart symphony (large orchestra) at home. The music on this CD was chosen for home listening, such as when reading a book.
This music appeals to everyone. Classic musicians may snub this music because it's not grand like a full-blown opera. They ignore the fact that the great composers, like Bach recognized different musical genres such as chamber music for at home or the kings court, and grand symphonies for an evening at the concert hall.
The music on this CD is EXCELLENT for listening at home. It's both brilliant and mellow. When I listen to this music I marvel at the brilliance of Bach. I am very grateful for this music and other CD's in this series.
A fantastic CD!
Bach for any meal!.......2004-01-22
By far, one of the best "collection" CDs of Bach's music. On a couple of tracks, some liberties are taken, but overall, this is a must-have. It includes 6 tracks from the Flute Sonatas, and features a soloist with whom I was not familiar - Irena Grafenauer gives THE MOST EXQUISITE performances I have ever heard - Galway and Rampal, step aside!
Lovely!!!.......2002-04-06
Worth every penny! A must have in the car if you commute on busy highway daily to and from work -- help to ease road rage! It's great for relaxing after a long day of programming too!

Great concept, great pressing.......2007-05-27
Weinger and Leeds have wrought anutha mutha, and don't let a few of the familiar titles get you down. There's plenty of never-on-CD stuff here - check it out for yourself.
If you love Live At The Apollo, Volume One, here's a super chance to hear the original studio recordings of many tracks found therein. Also, if you further enjoy the Soul-Funk period yielding sample-able tracks like "I'm Shook", then guess, what, check out the pleading, heart ballad here called "Waiting In Vain" - obviously a lyric-prototype.
A complete stand-alone cut is "The Bells" - a strange, gothic pleader, with James Brown weeping throughout the song - histrionics comparable to Domingo's in "Vesti La Guibba". If this doesn't shock your senses...then JB will have to loan you some Soul.
I was thrilled to hear "If You Want Me" for the first time. Maybe there's other longtime fans only familiar with it from the intro. at the '62 live Apollo record. It's a melodious sound amongst many easily described as *raw* - such as "Just You And Me, Darling", a impassioned, close to out of conrol soul-jazz-blues ballad.
"Oh, Baby Don't You weep" is the classic, of course based on a Gospel melody, which still shocks listeners toady. Yes, it's "Secular Gospel", if you will, or Gospel-*styled* R & B, whatever, James Brown's roots are strongly Gospel, so....let the Brother rapp.
The instru. "Can You Feel It" sets the stage for the much later "Dirty Harri"; "Devil's Den", another *first* for this fan, makes a nice connection to the incredible live version from the Instrumentals CD boxed-set.
I sure hope '63 to '66 follows; then '67 to '70. I loved collecting those King to Polydor, etc., 45rpms in those days and although I didn't buy my first JB single until '67, these early sounds serve as great forerunners of that revolutionary period I came in on.
I hope somewhere in this highminded release schedule, the very first domestic CD of "Live at the Garden" [the complete, unedited show], comes our way.

Polygram tells the JB story better than anyone yet with their series of two-CD James Brown reissues, which began with Soul Pride: The Instrumentals (1960-69), continued into the mid-1960s and onward with Foundations of Funk and this set, and then ventured into the 1980s with Dead On: The Heavy Funk. This triumphant, perfectly programmed two-disc package dredges 26 neglected gems and beloved jewels from the prolific predisco years, a time when Brown's powers were in sharp form. Waist-deep in fat freaky funk, pugilistic horn arrangements, looping modal grooves, and tuff blaxploitational kitsch--primo monster funk from the source. Fans of Parliament's nonstop party jam absolutely need this to know from whence their hardcore jollies came. --John Corbett

If anyone was making this music today it would be as fresh and hip as it was in the day. Timeless, classic, funk. There are single cuts on this collection worth the price of the cd. I own tons of James Brown, but did not have this until recently. If you appreciate some of the best music ever made on this planet then you must buy this cd!
JAMES COULDN'T MADE IT FUNKIER!.......2005-09-20
A few years before disco would rob pop music of it's soul, there were artists like Brother James dishing out hard and heavy grooves with a sense of urgency. Though this era from 1971-75 pales in comparison to his classic 60's hits to many, this CD proved that James was continuing to work out his grooves at a high level. Even without milestone singles like "I feel Good" and "Papa Got a brand New Bag" in this complimation, this is his most potent batch of funk jams (in my opinion). This complimation finds James settled into his style. As a result his music is harder and looser than his earlier funk hits.
No disrespect to his 60's era which is also great, If I had to pick a favorite era of songs, it would have to be this era. Brother James was not only the Minister of Super New New Heavy Funk, his music was the bible of the genre (and hip hop).
