Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

Nice CD.......2007-07-15
This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.
Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22
I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.
relaxation.......2007-05-13
This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.
amazing.......2007-05-07
Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.
Talented violinist.......2007-03-29
When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

Some of the reviewers sound like haters.......2007-06-26
It's a very nice album complete with vocals and very smooth jazz in the form of a saxophone. Probably someone from his competitors cooked up some dumb idea to slam his music. He should be getting a lot of solid five stars.
Same Ole Thing!!.......2007-06-18
I'M A JAZZ LOVER FROM BACK IN THE DAY. I'VE SEEN ARTIST COME AND GO. SOME HAS THE REAL TALENT OF LONGEVITY. IN MY OPINION IF KIM WATERS WOULD USE LIVE STUDIO PERSONELL HIS MUSIC WOULD SOUND BETTER. I GUESS ME BEING FROM THE OLD SCHOOL ALL THESE ELECTRONIC MACHINES JUST DON'T GET IT WITH ME.
Kim Waters!!!!.......2007-05-13
I have to always give it to Kim Waters. Everything he does is always over the top.
Kim Waters simply does it with this CD.......2007-04-11
I feel this is one of his best CD's. The tracks and his saxophone are crisp, discreet, and moving. The funky opening tune will get you in the grooves and his remakes of "The Closer I Get to You", "Inseparable", and "You are My Lady" will make you want to break out that bottle of wine with someone special. Trust me on this one. The minute I played it for the Mrs. it was on and I just wish we had a fireplace. Mello, Mello, Mello, with great sax. Don't miss this one.
Would somebody please get this guy a live band?.......2007-04-03
Well, well...another lame CD from the "King of Drum Machines". KW is a great sax player, but I wish that he would hire a back up band instead of relying on drum machines and other electronics to produce music. This stuff sounds like karaoke music or something that my 4-year-old plays on her toy keyboard. I do, however, like his rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up", but still it would sound so much funkier if the song were performed by a live band instead of a computer. Anyway, if you like poorly produced "electonica", then you may enjoy this CD. Ohterwise, try some Sanborn, Najee, Kirk Whalum or Boney James for your "saxual" pleasure.

two parts Hennessy to one part Lovage.......2007-07-03
Great album, another offering to my iPod from the generous library of Principal Dondelinger. It's at least half tongue-in-cheek but it's all great. I agree with other reviewers who have described the parody as more homage than mockery. The tracks vary but there is a nice consistent feel throughout, so it really flows as an album. The title suggests one way to utilize this music, but I've found this music to have potential even beyond being the soundtrack to the connubial shake-n'-fake. For example, my iPod likes to throw on "Pit Stop" and "Lies and Alibis" when I am walking alone at dusk, rundown by the day and the humidity.
Just listen to it. It's pretty unique. And I love the picture on the cover; I think it might be one of my Dad's nameless cousins from the seventies.
STOLEN MATERIAL.......2007-06-02
"Tea Time With Maseo" in this album contains recordings and words stolen from Alan Lorber's 1969 Groupies album.
Amazing..........2007-03-12
The production of this album is truly amazing. While there's definitely a parody element, the music is still banging. Sexy, fun, and cool. Perfect "music to make love to your old lady by"
weird but great.......2007-02-18
If you think that Deltron 3030 is the best hip-hop album of all time(like me) then you should definetly buy Lovage. Dan The Automator's(Nathaniel Merriweather) production is at its best, and combined with the DJ talents of Kid Koala(Deltron 3030), this album can't be beat. Also the strange combination of vocalists Mike Patton(Faith No More) and Jennifer Charles works perfectly. I totally slept on this album until recently, but this one is almost as perfect as Deltron.
Great Songs, Great Style.......2007-01-27
I've always been a Patton's fan, and this is one of the finest works I've ever heard about him, it's a soft-progressive-rock ballad with a little touch of irony, it's a very nice piece of art, a masterpiece, indeed.

The best RnB Album of All Time!!!.......2007-04-22
This is the most amazing RnB album of all time, bar none. It is funny though how slept on the best song of the entire collection was/is: "U + I". When I get married, this is going to be my wedding song, and I still bump this song at least once a day. Amazing lyrics, great delivery, true classic album, that still resonates today. We need someone to revive RnB like Jodeci. Looking forward to their comeback in '08. Trust me, buy this album and just loop it, over and over! Damon Vailati, Delray Beach, Florida/Fairfax, Virginia
I love Jodeci.......2007-04-03
Old school Jodeci is the best! Devante and Mr.Dalvin made the group!
Maybe a little above average?.......2007-02-20
I'm not usually too harsh on my critiques with CD's, so this one rates somewhere between decent and good. The title track, "Forever My Lady" is a nice slow jam, but there's not too much beyond that. "Come And Talk To Me" hit the charts back then, so that's a nice track to get you back in the nostalgic days of the early '90's. Aside from those two tracks, there isn't too much to rave about. Jodeci does their best in ballad form, so I'm not a big fan of their faster, more up-tempo, tracks. But, if you prefer their faster tracks, this might rate a little higher for your taste. For me, I think I prefer their compilation album than this one.
Jodeci is smooth.......2007-02-20
In the 80's this was what all teenagers listened too...now this is what they should listen to because of all the smooth sounds it just puts you in the mood when that special person comes home. Thanks Amazon

The real mystery is why it took so long for Etta James to win a Grammy. But this great American vocalist claimed her first statue by paying tribute to another grand singer. James's versions of Billie Holiday-identified tunes like "Don't Explain," "You've Changed," "Lover Man," and "The Man I Love" are the best readings of Lady Day's signatures in a generation. Pianist Cedar Walton leads the seven-piece band in spare and graceful arrangements faithful to the mainstream jazz sound of the '40s and '50s, which gives James ample room to exercise her soaring range and deliver a dazzling, seductive, and warm tour de force. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful, Simply Wonderful.......2003-12-24
I was surprised that I would love this CD so much because I had heard of Etta James but I didn't know to much about her or her music (she was a little before my time). I have to say this CD is timeless. I love the words of the songs and the richness of her voice. Etta truly makes me wish I could have been around to hear Billie do the honors herself.
The only woman to do Lady Day some justice..........2003-06-02
'Ya heard? I'm'a make this as short as possible. Etta James has one'a the mos' passionate an' wrenching voices in all blues n' soul music an' when she takes on THESE numbers, you hear that an' them some. As a big fan'a Billie Holiday not many singer could give much credibility to performin' the songs that she made famous. But this jus' works. Ms. James, rather than adopting the ballads with her own style, jus' adopted a DIFFERENT style than she normally does so that she can sing 'The Man I Love', 'Embraceable You', an' 'The Very Thought of You' with all the relaxed subtlety that Lady Day did. With a nice jazz backing section, she lays the loveliness on thick. Strictly fans'a her work only may not be as enthralled by this set, but if your musical tastes cover the whole spectrum from blues to soul to this ol' traditional-style jazz, then definitely check this out. This is one'a the most earnest, sincere, an' well-done tribute albums of all time. Ms. Billie would be proud.
A jazz legend paying tribute to another jazz legend.........2003-05-08
Etta james finally wona Grammy for this album which is shocking cause hello she's etta james what in the world took the grammy's so long...
this is a great cd ..that has a living legend pay tribute to another departed legend of jazz Billy holiday..
her range is incredible...considering she is a true barritone...amazing...one of her best albums..
You'll enjoy this.......2002-12-12
If you adore Billie and love Etta then you should be in heaven! I bought this on impulse and consider this one of my most treasured CDs. All the wonderful "old school" lyrics - the way they don't write them anymore - but with the full, rich sound of modern technology. Great tribute to Lady Day by a legend who can blow away a room full of Britneys!
My Favorite CD.......2001-04-21
I was always liked Etta's, A Sunday Kind of Love, so I was checking Amazon for CD's by her. I sure picked a great one. Mystery Lady is my favorite CD. I play it almost everyday. Her voice is so clear and strong. I recommend it to everyone.

Despite the presence of the sweetened (and great) single "A Natural Woman," Aretha Franklin's third Atlantic album is even more elegantly gritty than its two predecessors. She finds liberation in James Brown's "Money Won't Change You" and a revved-up take on Ray Charles's "Come Back Baby" much as she had in "Respect" and "Think" earlier, while Eric Clapton's guitar on "Good to Me As I Am to You" stings as much as her rueful, resigned delivery. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
LADY SOUL - A SOULFUL REIGN CONTINUES.......2007-03-09
At a 1968 concert in Chicago, Aretha Franklin was publicly and officially crowned the Queen of Soul in front of her fans by a DJ named Purvis Spann. This body of work shows why Aretha continues to reign supreme.
The Queen takes on the Kings of Soul/Rhythm & Blues and pulls no punches as she covers Ray Charles's "Come Back Baby" and "Be as Good to Me as I Am to You," James Brown's "Money Won't Change You," and Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready". She's classical, bluesy, funky, and right-down soulful on every cut.
The poet Nikki Giovanni once wrote--"Aretha can sing Money Won't Change You, but can James Brown sing Respect?" In other words, when the Queen covers a song, it becomes hers and one can easily forget about the original artist. For example, Carol King wrote and recorded "Natural Woman" but that song is and probably will always be associated with Aretha Franklin.
Aretha wails and gets right-down funky on cuts like "Chain of Fools" and "Nikki Hokey." She's operatically soulful on "Ain't No Way"--which to this day no female artist, including Whitney Houston, has been able to successfully cover.
Add this CD to your collection and continue to be soulfully captivated by the one and only true Queen of Soul - Ms. Aretha Franklin.
The epitome of late 60's Aretha Franklin.......2006-08-11
I have 99% of everything that is available by Aretha Franklin and for me personally, this album is the definitive late 60's Aretha Franklin -- bold, beautiful, vulnerable, earthy, sexy, defiant, spiritual and strong. All these qualities and quite a bit more are conveyed by that marvelous Voice and piano (via those lovely, delicate fingers).
My favorite Aretha song ever is here -- Good To Me As I Am To You. The sheer force of this song not only makes this a testimony of victory over victimization in a relationship, but I've always thought it was one of the sleeper anthems of the civil rights movement, as well. The lyrics convey this, as do the angst and the "I-will-win" factor that Aretha always carries within her voice to some degree. Never did she carry it in the 60's like she did on this album and with this particular song.
The rest of the album is not quite that transcendent for me, but "Lady Soul" still kicks like few others. Chain Of Fools is still a haunting tune with an indisputable groove even after hearing it for the 500th time; People Get Ready inspires repeated playbacks; and there are few summer songs better than Aretha's take on Groovin.
Money Won't Change You and Niki Hoeky are quite fun to listen to because of Aretha's voice, but beyond that they are not essential. Come Back Baby's vocal is amazing, yet it's all but buried in the mix (what was Atlantic thinking?).
But when you add the ones that ARE essential -- Natural Woman, Since You've Been Gone, and Ain't No Way -- you have an absolutely classic and indispensable piece of American music history here.
The one and only Aretha Franklin: "Lady Soul."
The name she would be forever identified as........2005-11-10
Boy, they weren't kidding when Atlantic issued this album originally back in '68. It was a surefire winner from the start.
Her third album with Atlantic proved that her talent and gospel vocal style could not be ignored. "Chain of Fools" does good for the opener. She then cuts out on James Brown's "Money Won't Change You" with raw vitality, then on the churchy "People Get Reday". She takes this Impressions' classic and blows the roof off with a great improvisatory gospel vocal spot. Have to listen to see what I mean. "Niki Hoeky" is indeed catchy; good bass guitar line, too. Then we have the classics "Natural Woman" and "Since You've Been Gone." Listen to that one; it sounds like she sings "cinnamon gum" every time she sings the title. "Good To Me As I Am To You" is a bluesy line with Aretha telling it like it is with Eric Clapton doing a good guitar feature. Then she cuts out on Ray Charles' "Come Back" and peps that one up, and does quite well with the Rascals' "Groovin'". Finally, we close with "Ain't No Way"; my personal favorite on the whole album. What a milestone of a song especially with the high wailing soprano in the background which I believe is Cissy Houston. Man, oh, man, that IS soul. Bonus material includes the unedited, longer version of "Chain of Fools", which is longer by about 2 more minutes. It has a 1 minute intro, an added verse, the lyrics as you're used to hearing them are placed differently.
Again, this is the non-chopped up version. Then the mono single versions of "Natural Woman", "Since You've Been Gone" and its flip "Ain't No Way." If there was any album that made Aretha Franklin a household name, it sure is this. You can believe it. Ever since I got that Atlantic Rhythm & Blues box set, I've been wanting to dig deeper into some of the artists' music. With Aretha, I've heard of the "Lady Soul" album, and decided to start there. I wasn't let down, and neither will you be.
Another Early Essential.......2005-09-06
Even though you have probably heard most of these obviously essential RnB songs, cut by the Queen in her prime, you need to get this re-released version if only for one thing: the unedited version of Chain of Fools. The opening, which was trimmed for the version that made it on to the original album and single, is PURE UNADULTERATED SOUL. There is literally nothing like this minute or so of pure anguish turned into vocal sound. This IS soul. And this is Lady Soul. For fans who have the original, YES it is worth buying again. And for the curious, there is hardly a better place to begin.
What an Amazing Voice.......2004-07-06
This is a stunning album. Aretha has one of those voices that is able to make you feel whatever it is she is singing about. It's no wonder she is considered the Queen. She puts other divas to shame with her great voice. "Natural Woman" and "Chain of Fools" are probably my favorites, but every song is just so good on this album. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Face it, when searching for female singers to portray the hard-knock life of troubled jazz legend Billie Holiday, Diana Ross's name shouldn't even have come to mind. But portray her she did, earning herself an Oscar nod in the process. The mother of all divas did Lady Day's legacy proud. This soundtrack (which includes dialogue from the 1972 film) ain't Holiday, but it ain't bad; Ross is in fine and flavorful voice. She manages to both capture Holiday's idiosyncratic sound (which such pretenders to the throne as Erykah Badu have trampled on) and still sound enough like herself to satisfy her own legions of fans. She conjures up Holiday's vulnerability and phrasing without attempting to slavishly imitate. As an homage this works. --Amy Linden

DIANA ROSS EXPLORES THE WORLD OF BLUES & JAZZ...And Does It Quite Well!.......2006-09-06
Of all of the Motown acts Diana Ross (With and without the Supremes) was always given the room to explore various settings including Pop, Standards, Disney Favorites, Show Tunes, and the list goes on and on. On this Soundtrack not only was she given the opportunity to record Billie Holiday blues & jazz favorites but she (Diana Ross) also got her first major starring role in movie "Lady Sings The Blues". Both Movie & Soundtrack were runaway smashes. As a result of the Top Ten hit single from the Soundtrack "Good Morning Heartaches", a new interest in Billie Holiday recordings took off. Be forwarned none of these recordings on this Soundtrack have the more familiar Motown Sound of the 70's, but well orchestrated blues, jazz & pop chestnuts by the one and only Gil Askey.
These are the type of recordings where you'll want to get your favorite drink and enjoy such jewels as "Mean To Me", "Fine And Mellow", "You've Changed", "Don't Explain", "God Bless The Child" (And others)....Sit back and enjoy. The only down side is that it includes excerpts from the Movie spliced in throughout (Unless you've seen the movie, then it might make a slight difference). For the most part you'll get to explore one of Diana Ross' most successful attemps at blues & jazz that she revisted several times since.
MAJOR ROSS CAREER HIGHLIGHT.......2005-05-12
Putting aside all of the liberties taken by the film makers with Billie Holiday's "autobiography" [she reportedly took many herself!], the music and the singing here do the Holiday legacy proud. Diana Ross is simply stunning in these faithful renditions; faithful in capturing the mood and tone, while not actually imitating Ms. Holiday. Holiday is revered by jazz "purists;" I find her fascinating, if not always easy to listen to [especially her later recordings]. Ms. Holiday, nonetheless, influenced probably every major jazz singer, and many musicians to boot (even Frank Sinatra stated what a huge influence she was on his approach and phrasing; being a student of his vocal technique, I do hear the Holiday influence on his performance of "Drinking Again," "I'm A Fool to Want You," and some others). Here, Gil Askey's arrangements are incredibly tasty and palatable. Palatability and accessibility are generally not huge selling points for those who consider themselves purists. But, that's Ross and Motown. And it's all OK.
The dialog and musical excerpts included in the first part of the soundtrack are OK, helping to give one the flavor of the film; the other half of the album features full-length version of the tunes, exactly as arranged for the film sequences. The Michel Legrand score pieces are fine, perhaps a bit overwrought and un-jazzy for this film. But the main theme is a rather lovely melody. The best Holiday songs were selected for Ms. Ross to sing, so this also serves as a fine introduction to Ms. Holiday's work.
This is one Ross album that could do with a deluxe reissue. ESSENTIAL for Ross fans.
The Essence of Lady Day is Captured by Ms Ross.......2005-04-26
Diana Ross certainly ruffled a few feathers among the "purists" when it was announced that she was to portray one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. One of their main gripes was that the young 28 year old Ms Ross simply had lived enough to even dare stepping on Lady Day's territory.
The movie itself came under criticism for its lack of authenticity in certain areas, and for the glossing over of Holiday's turbulent life and career. Where the movie and the music shine forth so powerfully is that it captures the essence of Holiday. Diana showcases Holiday's triumphs, vulnerability and confusion in such a poignant way that it cannot fail to move even the hardest critic.
Diana didn't try to imitate Ms Holiday - no one could have, really. Instead, she created new interpretations of Holiday's classics.
There's a rich feel to the soundtrack, and this is reinforced by dialogue from the film. Many of the musicians who played with Billie were drafted in to perform for the film and this is explains why the calibre of the music was so high. The orchestra was conducted by the legendary Gil Askey, who has worked with Diana since her time with the Supremes.
There are several outstanding tracks here, namely:
"Don't Explain" - a touch of melancholy
"Fine and Mellow"
"Lover Man"
"You've Changed" - captures Billie's heartache - very moving
"Good Morning Heartache" - stunning vocal performance
"My Man (Mon Homme)" - incredible torch song!
"Love Theme" - a beautiful instrumental written by French composer Michael Le Grand
"God Bless the Child" - a commanding performance
"Strange Fruit" is a haunting song that reveals the horror of lynching in the Deep South. Diana's crystal clear diction and intonation are incredible - to the point of being eerie.
The soundtrack raced to the #1 spot on the Billboard album charts, and became the fastest selling Motown album at the time. Quite why Diana, Gil Askey and Michel Le Grand weren't awarded Grammies for their sterling efforts is one of life's minor mysteries.
As for Diana missing out on the Oscar, I have my own theory about why: Hollywood just weren't quite ready to give up its most glittered prize - in the leading Best Actress category - to a woman of colour. Interestingly, Cicely Tyson (another fine actress) was also nominated for a Best Actress Oscar at the same time as Diana. We'd have to wait some 30 years (how crazy was that?) for Halle Berry to scoop the award and make history. I reckon that denying Diana the Oscar was a way of keeping her and Motown firmly in their place.
Nevertheless, the film and the soundtrack have stood the test of time, and represent some of best of Diana's work. It's a beautiful, moving performance that showcased Diana's gift for jazz interpretation. This soundtrack comes highly recommended.
Ms. Ross's Is So So Fine -- Her Best Recording !.......2004-10-06
I just heard this CD again this week after a long time. I must say this CD still stands the test of time, even after 30 years. Diana Ross is to be commended for her superb interpretations of these Billie Holiday standards -- all classics. It must have seem daunting for Diana Ross to tackle the role of Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues". True, the movie took many knocks for sensationalizing the seedier aspects of Billie's drug use and promiscuity, but no one can knock Diana's performance in that movie. I still don't understand how Diana Ross lost the Best Actress Oscar to Liza Minnelli for "Cabaret" that year. Perhaps Hollywood was not yet ready to bestow an Oscar for Leading Actress to a black woman. That's the only reason. It took Halle Berry to finally win one almost 30 years later for "Monster's Ball", which paled in comparison to Ms. Ross's performance in "Lady Sings the Blues", but that's another story.
My only quibble with this soundtrack is that Berry Gordy decided to instill snippets from the movie's dialogue into the soundtrack, which seems jarring when listening to the entire CD. But this is a soundtrack CD after all, so I guess Berry Gordy and Motown wanted it to be as authentic as it could.
All the songs are standouts, but Ms. Ross really shines in "Good Morning Heartache" (Motown released this as a single back in 1972) and probably her finest track "God Bless the Child". This is no mean feat since those songs are forever identified with Lady Day, but Diana manages to instill her own character into the song without robbing its essence. Certainly very, very praiseworthy.
Ms. Ross also was in great voice during this period as a recording artist. Having gone solo a few years earlier from the Supremes, her voice is warm and supple with just the right amount of lilt, which makes interpreting these Lady Day classics a bonus to hear. Again, much praise indeed to "Lady Diana" for a great singing and acting job.
Does anybody wanna know that Diana Ross has YET to win a Grammy? That's no joke! No Grammy and No Oscar. Is someone trying to send a message to Diana Ross ???
Lady Diana.......2002-09-15
Diana Ross did her thing on this album and film. I love this soundtrack ,because you can really feel the pain in Diana's voice which gives you the pain in Billie's life. It also gives you dialouge from the movie, which shows you why Diana was nominated for an oscar[which was stole from her and given to Liza Minneli ]. This soundtract and film is what seperated Diana from supreme to susperstar.

Trippy, smooth, beautiful.......2003-08-12
If you are looking for something to play while you smoke, chill with your girl, or just unwind, this is it.
Good, but could be better.......2003-05-14
I love trip-hop, and I love Mike Patton's work. Dan the Automator is also a guy who deserves respect. So, when I first read about Lovage, I was amazed with the possibilities.
The real thing, though, was not what I expected, but the sound is still good. You can find a good mix of humour with innovative beats, but there are 3 or 4 songs in the disc that you can name "excellent", so the general sentiment left when you finish hearing it is: "Man, this should've been better..."
The major problem is that Lovage had too much potential, and was unable to use it all. Songs like "Pit Stop" are nice, but just too average. I think that when you see a name like Mike Patton on the cover of a disc, you expect to hear something with the quality of Faith no More. And Lovage is not THAT good.
I recommend it, it's a nice sound -- it's worth it, I think. But lower your expectations, as there is much better stuff out there.
And I criticize based on comparison with the real excellent stuff.
If you are already familiar with bands like Portishead and Monk & Canatella, then I say you should buy this CD. It's good (not excellent or superb, though) stuff, and you won't regret it.
Instrumental genius once again.......2002-03-25
Fans of the Automator's work shouldn't be surprised by the consistent greatness of this album. Dan Nakamura - under pseudonyms including Nathaniel Merriweather and the Cantankerous Captain Aptos in addition to The Automator - is pretty much far and away the best producer working today in hip-hop; he has a little more competition in the more rockish/alternative end of the musical spectrum, but his less rap-oriented projects almost never miss the mark, as evidenced by the massive success of last year's Gorillaz album and its ubiquitous summer single, "Clint Eastwood." "Lovage," in its original form, was one of those genre-hopping, border-crossing experiments that the Automator is so good at: featuring vocals from Elysian Fields' Jennifer Charles and Faith No More's Mike Patton, it was even better than the Gorillaz album, if more eccentric and vaguely lunatic. Often instrumental versions are merely completists' treasures, relatively worthless without the accompanying vocals, but the instrumental Lovage is well worth hearing. Patton and Charles' vocals, excellent though they are, can distract sometimes from the far-out soundscapes the Automator delights in crafting; on this instrumental album you get all the clever samples, all the subtle turntablism (courtesy of wax wizard Kid Koala), all the sharp humor and irony (who says the nineties are dead?), and, most importantly, all the eminent grooveability. The beats are incredible from start to finish, and listening to the instrumentals one picks up on all sorts of little quirks and craftings in the music that pass by the wayside when put under Patton and Charles' compelling voices. Listen to the original vocal Lovage, or any Automator-produced album, for some of the best and most solid music this century, with the wild collaborations that are his trademark; listen to his instrumental albums, especially this one, to realize what an undeniable genius he himself is, alone.
and the music was like wind in your hair.......2002-03-17
buy this on sight.
nathaniel merriweather (dan the automator) sets the groove. mike patton (faith no more/mr. bungle/etc.) croons. jennifer charles (elysian fields) plays the sultry chanteuse. lovage could make barry white and the entire love unlimited orchestra rise to attention. it could make beth gibbons weak in the knees. it could remind r. kelly of his jeep.
a friend of mine dropped this album on the system at his work, a major corporate record store, and watched the customers transform from mindless drones to players and play-ettes -- numbers exchanged and stories of tawdry scenarios popping up left and right.
lovage has the power to stroke your soul. enjoy, baby.
I like Dan, but..........2002-03-11
I like Dan the Automator as much as anybody, but this album doesn't get it for me. I love that he's one of the few artists who thinks his music is as important to his hop-hop-ish offerings as the lyricists that they warrant instrumental releases, but most of these beats and tones just don't sing on their own. Not anywhere near as solid an offering as his "Dr. Octagon: Instrumentalyst" record, or the stripped-down "Deltron" (which actually sounds better without the vocals). The music just isn't hitting.
