It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

Melding the contemporary and the classic in ways only he can, Michael Buble has created his most complete studio effort yet. Ranging from "I've Got The World On a String" to "Me and Mrs. Jones," in addition to two new songs co-written by Michael, Call Me Irresponsible makes this album irresistible.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OK CD, BUT NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS "IT'S TIME"..........2007-08-02

... although it does have its moments, especially with "It Had Better Be Tonight" - that one's a grand slam home run that's guaranteed to be a live performance favourite when MB hits the road on tour.

On the flip side, his remake of "That's Life" is a clunker that could have been a smash with a punchier arrangement putting the emphasis on the horn section - the gospel-influenced approach was simply a badly-concocted idea (heck, even David Lee Roth, of all people, did a better version).

But I've noticed that about Michael Buble; his remakes are either fantastic or outright throw-aways. So far, "It's Time" represents the apex of his career.

2 out of 5 stars Frank Bubbly.......2007-08-01

I kept hearing the name Michael Buble and finally checked him out. Heard "Always on my mind" on his MySpace page and was blown away. Loved his older hit "Home" too. Took a chance on this album when I saw it at Starbucks. Listened to it and....

Please don't try and be a new Frank Sinatra, just be yourself, Mike, you got the chops, as you clearly show on the sublime "Always on my mind". I never tire of listening to that track, but skip alll the others. My ears were bleeding listening to you butcher the Eric Clapton tune "Wonderful tonight".

The production is superb - big points for that: 1 star. 1 star for "Always on my mind".

I wish you would have recorded an entire album of new classic sounding tracks a la "Always on my mind". That would have been a 5 star album.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-07-28

I love this CD. Michael Buble' has such a smooth voice. I can't get enough. It's easy listening, good for dancing, romantic. and I cannot say enough about the music.

2 out of 5 stars Does he have a speech impediment or is it just me?.......2007-07-27

Doesn't anyone notice he has a speech impediment? He slurs some words and has a very pronounced lisp at times. I'm not making fun of the handicapped. If he was someone that I met on the street I wouldn't mention it, but he has chosen a profession that requires clear speech and should be held to higher standards. If he was my dentist, I would be good with it.

The songs where there are fewer instances of "s" or "th" etc. are fantastic, but songs like "World On A String" are reminiscent of William Hung. I really like "Me And Mrs. Jones", but I can still hear a slight lisp here and there. I don't think I remember hearing the slurring and lisping on previous recordings??? I agree with a previous reviewer that asked how the studio could put this CD out.

5 out of 5 stars Buble is still on a roll.......2007-07-23

Michael Buble still fills the musical niche left by Sinatra's passing. The big band is top-notch and Michael, despite his youth, swings big time on these solid standards. Another good addition to your Buble collection.

5 out of 5 stars Oh I Know It's Getting Late, But I Don't Wanna Go Home.......2007-04-16

Horn-based rock/soul is one of my musical passions. Tower of Power, Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Blood Sweat & Tears, Van Morrison & the Caledonia Soul Orchestra... if there's a trumpet and a sax or two wailing away somewhere, I'm happy. So THE VERY BEST OF SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES has turned out to be one of the best purchases I've made in quite a while - and not just because they have a killer horn section.

As their name might indicate, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes emerged from the same New Jersey scene as Bruce Springsteen. Johnny Lyons sounds a lot like Springsteen, and the Asbury Jukes, culled from the same pool of musicians as the E Street Band, sound like a less grand version of the same with a bigger horn section. And boy oh boy do they use it, tearing through covers of R&B classics such as "Without Love" and "Havin' a Party" with the verve and dedication of a straight Blues Brothers Band. But it's when they collaborate with their fellow Asbury Parkers that the Jukes shine brightest. I had no idea Miami Steve Van Zandt was such an awesome songwriter, but he wrote or cowrote ten of the nineteen tracks on this disc, and it's all great: "I Don't Want to Go Home", "Take It Inside", "Next to You", "This Time It's for Real"... magnificent stuff. He also co-founded the Asbury Jukes and produces everything here. And then there's the Boss himsef, offering up his early-career showstopper "The Fever" and devastating "Hearts of Stone" among other highlights. But the final cut on the disc, "Trapped Again", is the best thing here - a collaboration between Springsteen, Van Zandt, and Lyons alike, this yearning street epic wouldn't have sounded at all out of place on DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes weren't nearly as ambitious as their more celebrated counterparts. They were an R&B band, pure and simple - and a damn fine one at that. But their music pulses with much the same Jersey soul that informs the best work of the Boss & his E Streeters, and I for one love it.

5 out of 5 stars Why wasn't Johnny bigger?.......2007-01-05

This is a great collection of songs that help capture the essence of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. We recently saw them perform at Walt Disney World, in Epcot, and since the shows were relatively short (about 40 minutes) we stayed for all three and had a great time. My wife asked me why Southside wasn't a bigger act in the 70's and 80's and truthfully, I don't know why not. Maybe living in the shadow of Bruce? Not sure, but damn, the band is tight, and they can still rock the house. So, I recommend this collection of songs.

4 out of 5 stars three-fourths complete.......2006-01-07

Surprised no one has yet mentioned that this is the best _of the first three albums_, not including new material from after Stevie left the band. The first 3 albums were the best, so this gives us a lot. Still, it would be unforgivable except that Rhino has released The Best Of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes (1979-1981).

The two CDs _combined_ give you everything.

4 out of 5 stars If you don't get it, you have missed something.......2004-08-04

I was a doubter for many years, but lets face it, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes have continued to be one of the premier R&B shows for 25 years. This album showcases what they do best, cover great oldies and bring life to songs of Bruce Springsteen that never would have seen the light of day otherwise. All I can say is SEE THEM! Then you can enjoy this album for what it is, a collection of some of the best R&B since the end of the 60s. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars You Had to just be there!!!.......2003-09-30

Would I be showing my "age" or would I be a prophet... if I got you to experience SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE JUKES???
I had to great pleasure to catch them in the mid 1980's in San Francisco at the Warfield Theater. This is possibly the best live band... bar band... complete band I've ever heard!!!
I'm not putting anyone down, but these guys have a sound that is refined, complex... and professionally KICKS GENUINE ASS!!! They worked the crowd, they worked the hall, and they sounded dammed good!!!
Much has been lost since then. Musical styles have changed... and not for the better. Music has gotten...
"lost" at least in my opinion. What is coming out now is far from the dynamic songs that were so evident in the Jersey sound.
This CD is a collection of just "some" of the best stuff... many of the real wall busters have been omitted. Having said that, this CD and the other ones you might find are well worth buying and listening to... often. There is a genuine freshness to this music that needs to be always around the top of your CD player.
Southside is still putting out music, but, sadly, all of us on the West Coast don't get to see him much. I miss the man... I miss La Bamba... I miss that horn section... and I miss that great voice that Lyon had.
Well, at least we have the CD's.

4 out of 5 stars *the* Christmas album.......2006-12-30

I have heard "Somewhere in my Memory" playing in malls. This is damn good. He does Christmas well, as you'll know if you've seen/heard the first two Harry Potter movies. Perhaps the most outstanding track is "Setting the Trap", which plays over a heavy '80's beat that's as much fun as it is in 'Phantom of the Opera' and somehow remains Christmas-y with the intelligent weaving of themes around and around. Eventually we come to a wonderful fugue section that starts off the finale. Truly a brilliant piece. "Star of Bethlehem" is a song I grew up considering standard Christmas repertoire, when in fact it was written for this movie. There is also a sly theme for the movie's villians, often on bass clarinet and piccolo, along with other delightful motifs. True, some of the tracks are little more than sparsely orchestrated accents of what is happening onscreen and tend to drag, but all in all, this is a must have for anybody who ever enjoyed 'Home Alone' or Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Williams.......2006-07-01

A real holiday pleasure. The movie comes alive in your mind, seriously. John Williams rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Home Alone: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2005-09-08

Great product. Service was efficent and on time. Packaging was well thought out. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Williams is brilliant!.......2005-03-08

Rarely does a family holiday film impress an audience more than John Hughes' Home Alone. And it was sheer inspiration to bring the Academy Award-winning John Williams and Leslie Bricusse together for the soundtrack. With a style reminiscent of your standard classical scherzo (a musical joke), Williams' score lends incalculable support to a film packed with one comedy-action sequence after another. Even when the dust settles, a pervading musical giggle forces you to wonder what's next.

But, interspersed among the prestos and allegrettos, Williams waxes eloquent as the music touchingly slows to underscore Kevin's (Macaulay Culkin) longing for peace amid the Christmas chaos about him. A children's choir reflects Kevin's emotions as they sing Bricusse's classically-styled lyrics. A few popular vocals also sweeten the disc. With the likes of Mel Torme and The Drifters, the entire album is a symphony of holiday impressions, from the sublime to the sinister, and everything in between.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christmas Music.......2004-07-23

Home Alone is a great Christmas tradition with great music. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars one of my all-time favorites.......2004-11-02

I love this album from start to finish. It has all the great elements of blues-based rock & roll.... great back beat, horns, harmonica, strong guitar, & great hard-drivin' vocals. The lyrics are well though out and not just thrown in as an after-thought. I have 4 kids (15-5), they love it too. I have used this album to teach them what good rock is supposed to sound like. It is tough these days, (a lot of crap out there)...we play it everytime we cross the Walt Whitman Bridge and head to the shore. If you like Southside, I would think you already own this...if you never heard Southside before, it is a great intro to an underappreacited band that had held on to its roots. The best of the Garden State.

5 out of 5 stars It's Been A Long Time.......2003-09-07

I played this album in my car on the way to the beach today...I hadn't heard it in a while. What a record! Every track just smokes. Like the great Disciples of Soul, (with Southside replacing Stevie's vocals), it's just a great collection of songs and performances. Max Weinberg is an incredible drummer; and the rest of the band just jams around his beat. A truly underrated album.

5 out of 5 stars A Hot Comeback For A Great Lost Bar Band.......2002-09-26

BETTER DAYS is a hot comeback for Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Little Steven is back on board, with a whole bunch of great songs. "Coming Back", "All I Needed Was You", "It's Been a Long Time", and the title track are the best-known songs, but there are numerous other gems on this, one of Southside Johnny's best ever. The whole album has a reflective tone, looking back to a glorious past and forward to the road that lies ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Like wine, he gets better with time........2002-05-12

I've been a Jukes fan for as long as I can remember, and this album does not let me down. After all this time, it's still one of my favorites to kick in the CD player. "Comin' Back" is reminescent of his "Slow Dance" album which should also be a staple in any Jukes fan's archive. Of course, no Jukes collection is complete without "At Least We Got Shoes", "Sacrifice", or "In the Heat". In any case, this album delivers from beginning to end, and is certainly worth the investment. This album gets better every time you play it!

4 out of 5 stars A steal for this price..........2000-08-16

A very strong album with top notch production by Little Steven. If you are a Southside fan, shame on you for not already owning this highly underappreciated disc. If you are a Bruce fan with only passing acquaintance with SSJ, or a fan of the bar band / soulful / brassy side of rock, then spring for the 6 bucks and you won't be disappointed with this record.

4 out of 5 stars A mediocre sophomore effort.......2007-07-10

In 1987,Bruce Hornsby & The Range took home one or two Grammys for their 1986 debut THE WAY IT IS. I know they won the Best New Artist Grammy. This 1988 mediocre release didn't garner any Grammys but was probably a nominee. Hits from this album include THE VALLEY ROAD and JACOB'S LADDER. The latter track, written or co-written by Hornsby, was first a hit for Huey Lewis & The News from their '86 Grammy-winning FORE! album. The other songs are good. Puerta wound up leaving the Range to reform his first band Ambrosia. So Hornsby wound up seeking a new bassist.

4 out of 5 stars Bruce Hornsby brings out melody magic and certainly has the touch .......2006-03-16

Bruce Hornsby has the touch on this classic Cd from the 80 ths. With his band The range, this certainly shows a whole lot of range when it comes to eargasmic pop/rock music.
It begins with Track 1 Look out any window, and it drives you into the Hornsby world. The pianoplaying is the key element on many of this tracks, so on the opener too. He treat the tangents with the right feel and joy, and the vocal and other instruments just fits in. Track 2 The Valley Road is more in the "synth land", and is a fine mix between different keyboards variations. This one too has that open soundpicture, with a very clear piano soundmix , and the vocal and the other instruments just fill it out in a way. Track 3 I will walk with you has much of the same elements input, but this one also have a more potent vocal with the right tearjerkin` voice to build up the right mood alltrough.
Track 4 The road not taken, has a very open soundlandscape, where Hornsby just drizzel out pianomagic in this very catchy and tuneful song. Track 5 The Show begins as a ballad. Soft but clear pianoplay with some synth strings along with it. Then suddenly it changes into more uptempo beat, and give`s you minor freezez down your backbone, so to speak. It opens up.He realy makes the show goes on, on this one. Track 6 The old playground is the first minor letdown, which is to compact . The vocal and the instruments figths for theire places. There is anyway a good piano solo there, all though. Track 7 Defenders of the flag, is a blues song, which doesn`t fit`s in a away. The harmonica is ok, but it has much of the same problems has the song before. Track 8 Jacobs Ladder sound`s like a copy of the original Huey Lewis hit, but Hornsby bring`s some new magic to it. Not at all bad. Track 9 Till the dreaming`s done, is an ok ballad. Anyway Bruce Hornsby brings out melody magic, and certainly has the touch with a big T.

4 out of 5 stars Great musical artist, among the few out there........2006-02-25

Little did I realize many of the songs that I heard on some of my favorite movies were the works of Bruce Hornsby and the Range. That's when I started purchasing his CDs. If it's any musician who deserves the royalities when a person buys their merchandise, it's Bruce Hornsby.

5 out of 5 stars Some darn fine music that always plays well.......2005-11-05

Bruce Hornsby's music is always worth a listen, but this record is one that I think some of his fans and others may have overlooked. It's a rare gem in the fact that you can play this cd from beginning to end without having to skip songs. The lyrics are great, the music is introspective and goes beyond mere bubble gum pop. As a long time owner of this cd, I would highly reccomend it to anyone unless you have some kind of personal vendetta against Bruce Hornsby music. If you aren't sure if you like Bruce give this one a chance..it might just make you a fan! This is vintage Hornsby....one of his finer efforts and on a personal note my favorite album of his from the 80's and perhaps of his long and distinguished career.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Hornsby's Second Great Album In A Row.......2005-07-29

SCENES FROM THE SOUTHSIDE is Bruce Hornsby's second great album in a row. As on the first one, the songs are a mix of social commentary, personal observations about life, and love songs from an adult point of view. The opener, "Look Out Any Window", is about how the agricultural industry, which provided the goods to help young guys like myself look good for their favorite actresses, is being destroyed by rising land prices, corporate greed, suburbanization, and even the cruelties of nature, a theme which is also told from the viewpoint of a story of love between a hired hand and the boss's daughter in "The Valley Road", a love story in first-person in "The Road Not Taken", and a direct attack on the politicians who are destroying the farmers' careers and lives in "Defenders Of The Flag." "Jacob's Ladder" is an indictment of not only religious fundamentalists, but also of "spiritualist" cults such as Scientology. Hornsby's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted, as well as his advocacy of increased funding for community policing, makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

This acoustic one-off from Back Porch labelmates Charlie Sexton and Shannon McNally was conceived after a short joint tour where they shared the stage for part of the set. Their label's name is an ideal description of this casual meeting of the minds--it seems like microphones were set up in a country yard on a gray Sunday morning as the two musicians discarded their stage personas and modest star trappings to revel in the love of making music. The songs are a mix of originals from each artist, along with a few similarly themed covers from others such as Townes Van Zandt ("No Place to Fall") and Jesse Winchester ("Biloxi" works as a perfect post-Katrina lament from ex-New Orleans resident McNally). Echoes of Gram Parsons's classic work with Emmylou Harris abound, but the Southside Sessions sound is more somber, sorrowful, and folksy, with touches of gospel-styled passion. The peaceful yet emotionally charged vibe is aided by solemn piano and barely-there percussion to help flesh out these naked performances. Sexton's flinty voice meshes surprisingly well with McNally's more classic husky country twang to produce a short but bittersweet half-hour of songs that linger long after the last note fades. --Hal Horowitz

2 out of 5 stars The best part of it was the covers.......2007-07-12

It's too long for the self-described EP and too short for an LP. Two covers out of five songs and they're the best. The arrangement is okay, but I'd rather hear more of Sexton's guitar. Overall, I could have kept with my originals of the two covers and been happy. This one may be destined for the used CD store.

5 out of 5 stars Why not? It's so pleasant.........2007-05-13

I am right now listening to Southside Sessions, by Shannon McNally and Charlie Sexton, even though the impolitely named Cd tells it the wrong way.. Always thought women should come first. But I suppose that's because Sexton's hailed as the bigger 'star' here. At least by the Record company, I guess..
Well, I am disagreeing.. not about who's the star between the two. They don't, most probably, care about it :) ... and so do I. (But I do think they are great poets.) I am disagreeing about the label 'EP' I read about on the Internet. It's unfair. It runs 7 songs. So did thousands of 'LPs', back in the vinyl days. There was a time when eight songs were the standard for a decent recording. And those were the time when a successful record would generate 2 hits.. and the rest would be a bunch of not so nice songs that sometimes would not even fit as 'B'sides for the '45 records.
Southside Sessions feature seven (and I like that number) really likeable pieces of music. The songs catch the ear at the very first listening. Even before I listened to, or read, the words the pair sung with attitude that wasn't aiming at selling millions, I liked the album. I had read about it being some sort of cd recorded from someone's back porch on a Sunday afternoon.. Poor pun that was from several reviews (a lot, in fact).. that almost prevented me from purchasing the cd. But then, I liked the idea. A cd from Buddy Guy was also described in really similar way a few years ago, and there was not a single song I didn't like there too.
I knew nothing about Shannon McNally before reading about this cd. I downloaded 'Old Cypress Tree' from her web page, and ordered her 2 other solo BPR cds along with this one. I am glad I did. I didn't even realise since quite recently that Old Cypress Tree was featured here.. I would just take the cds every time I had to drive and listen to them. This one was my instant favourite, until I got to appreciate the other cds too. It was becoming hard to decide which one to listen to, and when. And then I noticed the bare feet, jeans, and rugs on the back picture. From then on, I listen to this cd in my room almost exclusively.. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I look for it and pop it in the cd player. Nothing else goes these days. Or nights, should I say.
I don't know why.. These things happen. Like listening to Neil Young's 'Harvest' on Sunday mornings, or listening to Tom Waits' 'Blue Valentine' on every Valentine's Day morning. The latter is NOT a very good choice for a love song on a 14th of April, but I have come to believe that once in a while, the music chooses it's listener. I'm glad when it chooses not to leave.
They can't be bad songs when they stick with you for so long. I just wish I get to listen to records that are as nice as this one more often.. And 'No place to fall' sounds so much like a prayer..
I used 'Old Cypress Tree' as the alarm ring on my phone and was late every morning..
This is on my blog, and I thought I should try to get the World to know too..
Peace to your ears

3 out of 5 stars More guitar, please.......2007-01-07

I had no expectations of this album, having only seen Charlie Sexton on tour with Dylan. So, he could punch holes in the walls of big venue with a Telecaster, but could he turn out a journeyman studio product? Almost. This album is a good example of what happens when people of limited ability don't write from charts - it conveys the impression of depth with words which are actually complete gibberish. Apparently, when Charlie played those many gigs with Dylan, he wasn't listening to the lyrics. Musically, this is strong work, with visceral punch, well produced, mixed, and mastered. The vocals stand out where they should, blend where they need to, and never get eaten by the production. Everyone has to cover master songsmith VanZandt these days, and they certainly picked a good one with "No Place To Fall". McNally has the range, power, and maturity to pull if off convincingly. This would have been a stronger album with more of what Charlie does best - guitar work.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-01-04

I have been a fan of Charlie Sexton's for a long time. This is the first time I had heard Shannon McNally. The combination of their two voices is hauntingly beautiful and creates a mood of longing and sweet saddness perfect for relaxing on a rainy day. I love it!

3 out of 5 stars A Solid Set.......2006-10-29

No revelations here from Sexton: and very much a marking time set of songs, to establish a point on his trajectory. The best things aren't his, but the Van Zandt and the Winchester covers. In fact,'Biloxi' is pretty damned good and the only song which I can really take McNally's countrified twang, which just doesn't fit the depth that Charlie has invoked over the years. 'Biloxi'is a magical song, one of Winchester's host of evocative pieces. Some of the Todd Rudgren percussive effects reappear in Charlie's version, but its a richer, rockier fare. I hope the general tone of this Extended Play doesn't imply a leaning towards cliche on his part, a mid-career ennui. The coals glimmer on the final two songs,'Born' and 'I'd Do The Same For You' where Charlie steps inside the songs and pushes the throttle to the floor.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2005-12-09

I bought this record when it first came out and have listened to it consistently since then. It's one of the real classics, in the same group as the 1st generation Chicago blues classics - a desert island record. Great blues has a soul that all fans can identify - this record has that soul to burn. And burn it does, mostly. The singing, harmonica and guitar work are peerless - equalled by electrified white bluesmen only a few times, for example, in the first two Paul Butterfield Blues Band records and maybe parts of John Hammond's "I Can Tell." Harvey Mandel's guitar solo on 4PM makes my hair stand on end (the longest bent note in the blues!), even after almost 40 years. Charley's hard driving vocal style and aggressive harp fills and solos against that solid simple back beat are the essence of hard rocking.

My favorite Musselwhite story - at a rock festival in 1970 filled w/ hippie comunards, somewhere in rural Oregon, Charley, with slicked back short hair and a white short sleeve shirt surveys the frolicing multitudes - swirling, colored clothes, flowing long hair everywhere, wildly high, like a chemically enhanced group of 18th century utopians at an outdoor picnic- looks at the audience - knowing how incongruous his blue collar band must look, and growls, "SOMEbody got to play the blues." So true. He did. The harp wailed and the crowd went wild. He rocked then and he rocks now.

4 out of 5 stars Imprescindible en cualquier colección de blues.......2004-04-14

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the BEST.......2000-08-05

blues albums to emerge from the 1960s. Charlie Musselwhite had been paying his dues back in the '60s on the South Side of Chicago, learning from the Blues Giants and doing session work with the likes of John Hammond and Tracy Nelson, but he really emerged as a FORCE and a TALENT with this album. Musselwhite just shows impeccable instincts, and the result is something rare: a white who plays the blues in an overwhelmingly convincing way. Listen to "Strange Land" or "Baby Won't You Please Help Me" and you will sense NOTHING trivial, and much that is deeply moving, about this music. A real hidden talent on this CD is Harvey Mandel on guitar--the man was and is a creative genius, bringing his own style of feedback and sustain--a highly idiosyncratic manner--to a pure understanding of the blues. I have had this album/CD for over 30 years, and when I play it today, I can still feel the fresh drive, energy, and authenticity that startled me when I first bought it back in 1967 (?).

5 out of 5 stars Ace blues harp killer. One of the all-time greats. Superb!!!.......1999-03-04

This is Charlie's debut and simply a killer. If you are blues fanatic such as I am, this is a must for your collection. The styling is much like Paul Butterfield's early work. Charlie is a master of the instrument and blues. This is an excellent place to start. I highly recommend all of Charlie's sets, but this is the place to start. Pure Chicago blues at it's finest. This is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Lloyd is SOOO HOTTT.......2007-07-31

I would give this CD a 10 if I could. After purchasing Street Love first I decided to backtrack and try Southside which I like EVEN better than Street Love. Lloyd has such an amazing sexy voice for one so young. My favorite is This Way followed by Feels So Right, I'm a G and Sweet Dreams. Lloyd is on his way to superstar status if he continues singing such sexy lov songs!!!

2 out of 5 stars Lloyd - Southside.......2007-06-06

WOW this album is so dissapointing it is just horrible. I mean i like Lloyd and he got a great voice very similar to MJ, but he is way off on this album. He trys to be to street with this album, and it just dont work for him. I mean there are a few decent tracks like the sure to make babies "Feels So Right", and the single "Southside' and a few other decent tracks. Other than that avoid this album, because it really does not sound right. And Lloyd really has the potential to do big things but with this album he did big things in a very bad way. Definetly buy Street Love but dont buy this unless you are a huge Lloyd fan because there are not very many songs that are even remotely tolerable on this album. Production is way off, and so are his vocals on a lot of the songs he sounds like he is trying to rap instead of sing. And that is not what Lloyd should be doing because he is a singer not a rapper, but this definetly sounds like a rap album.

3 out of 5 stars Lloyd - Southside .......2007-02-28

Lloyd (A.K.A. Lloyd Harlin Polite) released his debut album "Southside" (2004) at the age of eighteen. The Atlanta/New Orleans artist provides a sixteen track release which featured guest appearances from Ja Rule, Ashanti, Chink Santana, Taniya, Lil Wayne & Scarface. The album's lead single share's the album name "Southside" a collaboration between Lloyd and Inc. label mate Ashanti, a smooth and simple love ballad which works well. The second single "Hey Young Girl" has Lloyd talking to the ladies in a track which never really picks up. Similiar unsuccessful ballads follow in track's like "Feelin You" & "Take It Low", "Hustler" - track's which fail to keep this listeners attention. Lloyd reflects on his "Life" and the struggles he's faced, while female singer Taniya Walter takes a cruise with Lloyd on "Cadillac Love". Lil Wayne and R & B singer's don't mix well so it's no surprise that "Trance" falls under more skip material. "Feels So Right" & "This Way" are marginally better efforts from Lloyd, backed by some smooth production Lloyd provides slow jam's for the bedroom. "Sweet Dreams" sounds like it was made off the format of a nursery rhyme. The next two track's fall under skip material for me then the album closes with the distinct "Southside" (Remix) which features some verses from Rap legend Scarface. While I found "Southside" to be overall a mediocre release, I consider Lloyd to be a young artist with potential. I was listening to the "You" (Remix feat. Andre 3000 and Nas) recently and was impressed by Lloyds vocals. It will be interesting to see how much growth Lloyd has made when he drops his sophomore album "Street Love" later this year. 2.5.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a debut album.......2007-01-20

Let me start off by saying I just recently became a Lloyd fan thanks to his current single 'You'. LOVE that song... and the video that goes with it. Since his new album doesn't come out for a while still, went and bought his old one. It's not the best album, but it's not terribly bad either. I'm a big fan of Southside, Hey Young Girl and Feels so right.

Lloyd's voice is unique, very soothing, very 'south'. Sorta reminds me of DeAngelo whom I love. Something tells me Lloyd will blow up in '07.

Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes are at their peak on this LP.The
title cut "Heart's of Stone" is one of the most soulful & unforgettable
song's your ever gonna hear, combined with hot rocker's like "Talk to Me"
& "Take it Inside" make this CD a bargain at any price. The final cut
"Light Don't Shine"is a big time tear your heart out & lay it on the
table killer. All in all this collection is smokin & a must have for 70's
Rock-n-Roll afficianados!

5 out of 5 stars There But for the Grace.......2006-02-10

As the saying goes, "Timing is Everything" and I can't help but feel that with a couple breaks and a little good timing, Southside Johnny might have become the big 70s & 80s mega superstar from New Jersey instead of the BOSS. Don't get my wrong, I love Springsteen. I just think Southside Johnny and the Jukes deserved better.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the second band after Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band to emerge from the New Jersey area. Though they carried a significant influence, including key personnel, from Springsteen and company, they were basically a White R&B brass band in the Bill Chase, Blood Sweat and Tears tradition.

This album is the most successful merger of old R&B with modern songwriting and sensibilities in the Jukes' catalog. "Hearts of Stone" features many great Van Zandt originals "Got to Be a Better Way Home", "Trapped Again", "I Played the Fool", "This Time Baby's Gone for Good" and my favorite "Take it Inside".

As evidence the Springsteen and Southside Johnny were close, Springsteen either wrote or had a hand in three of the songs.

As much as I like and admire Springsteen, I don't think I like any Springsteen album any better than "Hearts of Stone"

4 out of 5 stars Sevendust's Acoustic Live Album........2007-05-13

This album is fantastic, I have never heard Sevendust perform these songs acousticly, it brings a different feel to the songs. Also, I love the fact that this album is a Limited edition, as it comes with official tour photos and a pick, as well as a dvd. I truly love this band and this album proves that Sevendust can perform live extremely well and the musicianship of each band member is of a high quality. Thanks Sevendust!

5 out of 5 stars turn off the lights and turn up the sound.......2007-03-20

I got this when it came out, and it never stops delivering. Raw emotion, talent and sound. It is more about the true song structure, performance and lyrics, instead of massive sonic assualt. If you really like this band, then take the time to get this and watch it.
And turn it up loud!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting change-up, A Sevendust fans Item, but may alienate the rock crowd.......2006-08-10

This is an interesting set put out by Sevendust. This was an excellent job at packaging (cd pick, post cards, DVD/Cd) and truely a fans pack. It was interesting to here sevendust as a stripped down version of itself, but not bad. This may have stemmed from the success of Angel's son, but also was a way for the band to showcase not only being a loud, hard pounding rock band, but also a great songwriting band, allowing the melody and vocals stand out and take shape without the loudness. Godsmack did a similar thing around the same time. I must say it took me a few time to adjust to tis album, but I do enjoy it now. But, as a warning for the person expecting to hear the Rock they expect from Sevendust, this will not be your collection. I would recommend the Greatest Hits Cd that came out Last year if you wan the rock versions. I really with they would come out with a regular Live CD, I have seen them live 3 times, and they are awesome, and it would be great to have that captured on CD.

4 out of 5 stars Only if you're a true 7D follower and enjoy acoustic music.......2006-03-02

I love it. I enjoy many styles of rock/metal/alt. what-have you. This package comes with a full length cd (live concert). It also comes with the same material on dvd. Really rocks if you have a surround sound system. Bottom line here is if you don't like acoustic music it's not for you. Definetly check out there new studio album "NEXT". There new album and "SEASONS" are two of my favorites from them, although i can't really pick just one. They all have that special something about them.
