Originally best-known as an Italian-born model who had affairs with Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, Bruni has matured into a remarkably talented and self-possessed singer-composer-guitarist. Her debut album, sung mostly in French, could best be described as neo-chanson. Bruni's whispery, wobbly, husky voice, wryly deadpan delivery and introspective lyrics recall Francoise Hardy, Barbara, Jane Birkin and Nico. But unlike her forebears, who so often posed as waif-like child-women and doormat-like victims of passion, Bruni remains firmly on top. Her lyrics can and do celebrate true love but she also praises the delights of female sexual empowerment in no uncertain terms, as on J'en Connais ("I've Known A Few"). Musically, the tunes range from folk Français to echoes of le jazz hot to bluesy torch numbers. The spare, mostly acoustic instrumentation is unfussy and atmospheric, while the I-couldn't-care-less ambience is occasionally punctuated by chimes, insouciant whistling or an impudent, sly giggle. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars The words, the mood. Fantastic! .......2007-07-17

None of the reviews have mentioned the words. I speak a little french but not enough so I googled the lyrics in french, and then copied them to babelfish and had them translated. THEY'RE SO GREAT! They're very smart and the philosophy is deep... really, they're not about how sad love is at all. If anything they're very playful and mischevious. Je suis le pl Jazz chants

ringtone88.com he didn't have, on his own, was humor: that's where Carla Thomas, daughter of Rufus, came in. "Tramp" is an exuberant corn-pone-flavored duet: once heard, it lingers in the mind, or at least in mine. It's funny. The rest of this record, first released in 1967, lingers well, too: the covers of several rock and roll masterpieces like "Tell It Like It Is," "It Takes Two,"and "Bring It On Home to Me," are crisp, light-handed, and sure-footed.

People say that the late, great Marvin Gaye never sang better than when he was paired with Tammi Terrell; that's a matter of personal taste, and I wouldn't say the same about Otis Redding and Carla Tucker. I would say they sang superbly together: if you love 1960's Southern soul, you want to get this rare record before it goes out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-08-05

I had to write this because I couldn't believe that none of the people that already reviewed it mentioned "Are You Lonely For Me, Baby?" Definately the best song on the album and one of the best Otis ever recorded. The rest kick ass too.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Duo.......2005-07-30

How can anybody from Georgia - even the South - not think that Carla Thomas & Otis Redding are sui generis. The song "Tramp" with their clever exchange of lyrics, and gold digger/dirt farmer jokes is a hoot. "Otis," says Carla, "you ain't nuthin' but country." Otis replies, "That's right, baby. Yes I is." She complains, "You can't buy me diamonds or minks." And he comes back, "Why, woman, I can buy you anything you want - rat, squirrell, frog, anything!" The romantic songs are as good as it gets, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Monarchy.......2000-12-05

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas recorded one album together, but it is an R&B gem. Motown started the duet album trend by pairing Marvin Gaye with Mary Wells, Kim Weston & most famously Tammi Terrell, so this was Stax/Volt's rebuttal. The album is made up of mostly covers, but Mr. Redding & Ms. Thomas attack the songs with a ferocity and verve that makes them sound all there own. Mr. Redding's smooth voice easily mingles with the sass of Ms. Thomas' and this is no better illustrated than on "Tramp" which is pure Southern Soul. They do a tender take on Sam & Dave's "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" and Aaron Neville's "Tell It Like It Is" while ripping it up on Eddie Floyd's "Knock On Wood" & "Lovey Dovey". It is interesting to hear them do the Gaye/Weston song "It Takes Two" as there is always was a rivalry between Motown & Stax/Volt. King & Queen was a boastful title and the two more than live up to the claim.

5 out of 5 stars King and Queen.......2000-11-02

A fairly swell collection of duets between Otis and Carla. They fit together like, well, King and Queen. If you like the Stax/Memphis sound and Otis Redding and/or Carla Thomas, you can't go wrong on this one. Their version of Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood" is an absolute classic. Great Album. Buy it before it goes out of print!

5 out of 5 stars Another great CD!!.......2007-06-08

It is always great when you hear a musician with such a unique style and beautiful voice. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars promises, promises.......2007-05-27

I saw this CD advertised in the windows of several record stores in Amsterdam. Bruni is a model-turned-singer, and here she's interpreting poetry as music. It comes across nicely, in chanteuse style...nice, light, and enjoyable. Great music for a dinner party, methinks.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough Norah Jones? Try Some Carla Bruni.......2007-03-01

This popular French/Italian singer delivers her first English language CD and it is a beauty, setting some American and British poetry to music in a manner in which the most accurate description is "simply lovely." With a honey-smoked voice like a young Marianne Faithfull, the songs exude a peaceful mood like being the last couple on the dancefloor in the backyard of a Southern mansion on a magnolia-scented sultry summer's night. The soulful, languid vocals build up a momentum as the CD moves along and, as a whole, are a lot less sleepy than Norah's latest effort. Try "I Felt My Life with Both My Hands," "Promises Like Pie-Crust," "If You Were Coming In The Fall," "Ballade at the Thirty-Five" and "At Last The Secret Is Out" and taste the musical delicacy that is Carla Bruni.

ringtone88.com ller in her adopted country, France. With her new record entitled "No Promises", she maintains her well proved concept, based on the leading acoustic guitar and interspersed variations of harmonising instruments.
She just changed two things which weren't essentially remarkable if we hadn't any understanding of languages. Besides the fact that Carla swapped from the fragile sounding French to the melodically caressing English, she doesn't sing over her own words this time.
The lyrics come from famous poets and they are all distinguished creations from several personalities. Bruni really proved her musical talent though.
All the melodies, which mostly suit and carry the statements of each poem, were composed by the Italian ex supermodel herself.
She's obviously not an eminently blessed compositor, but she improves when it comes to rather simple but effective acoustic tunes, which leave a mark of easiness and subliminal melancholy. On the opener "Those Dancing Days Are Gone"(William Butler Yeats) she uses the guitar like she's talking frolicsomely to a friend.
"If You Were Coming In The Fall" (Emily Dickinson) follows the mentioned example, but it seems a bit inapplicable referred to the poem's depressing theme.
A song close to decent perfection would be "Before The World Was Made" (William Butler Yeats) which contains a tangent instrumentation, modelled on folk and country elements.
"Promises Like Pie-Crust" (Christina Georgina Rossetti) needs less getting used to, according to Carla Bruni's latest efforts, which are mostly classified into the "chanson" genre.
On "No Promises" there's an arbitrary mixture of folkish melodies and pieces abutted to the musician's preferred " chanson" style. And even though the change of language doesn't bring in that much fresh air, the album's overall well rounded and is best suited to relaxed moments in front of a homely fireplace.
The incontrovertible fact that the lyric often is more enthralling than the musical aspect, doesn't reduce the delight that much. In this case, both parts go hand in hand and were made for operating together as one.

5 out of 5 stars Carla is my Queen.......2006-03-04

After hearing her in Charming Hostess, Tin Hat Trio, and seeing her play with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, it's about time that Ms. Kihlstedt tried going out on a limb and seeing what she could do on her own. The results? An eclectic mix of folk, jazz, klezmer, and avantgarde thanks to John Zorn's Tzadik label. She plays her strings as if she were discovering them for the first time, and uses her own voice as an instrument the way that Mike Patton has. Carla has an ability to sound both heavenly and creepily haunting at the same time (row your boat is scary) that I love. I try to collect everything that she has done, and I think that this is a tie (along with Charming Hostess) for being her best project.

5 out of 5 stars eclectic solo album from quirky lady........2004-08-30

Carla Kihlstedt is quite a remarkable violinist/vocalist in her myriad projects. She is one of the founding members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (killer avant-rock band), the Tin Hat Trio (a chamber jazz trio of guitar, violin, and accordion), and is one of the singers in Charming Hostess (their album _Eat_ is a great blend of progressive female vocals, Eastern European motifs, twisted folk music, and avant-rock quirks). She has been a contributor to many others artists' recordings, including John Zorn, Tom Waits, and Mr. Bungle. She has made quite a name for herself in the San Francisco bay area as a classical performer and improviser. So what does her solo album off Théorie, tableau, texte, de Jarry à Artaud

While violinist Carla Khilstedt has been an active participant in many bands and recordings (Tin Hat Trio, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Charming Hostess among many others) this is her first recording as a leader, and it's a doozy. Ranging from the sublime ("50 Miles") to the harrowing ("Flinch") to the delicate ("Another Day"), this album brings to bear all Kihlstedt's formidable range, highlighting the strengths of a musician of rare ability.

Voice and strings are served by small, often intimate arrangements, bringing you into the music. Songs have individual character, differing greatly in tone, content and style, yet all the music is of one basic nature, obviously from one mind and voice. To visit so many musics in one outing is remarkable, but doing so and still retaining such a strong sense of individual identity is exceptional, probably the best single word to describe this album.

For my money this is THE record of the year. Confident without being cocky, beautiful without being self-absorbed, skillful but not gratuitously so. Accessable to the casual listener but a wealth of depth for the discerning musician, I cannot think of a single thing I'd change. This is a stellar piece of work from one of the most interesting musicians working today.

Get it. Put it in your brain.

On an old boat, maybe a raft--slowly floating under a canopy of overgrown trees lining the river bank--sultry but cool, with rays of sunlight sporadically breaking the tree shade--coming up on a dilapidated house--getting closer, the house takes on personality--sad but strong and defiant, melancholy with more than a hint of smirk. This is what I thought after one listen to Evangelista, and the album proves just as provocative with each successive listen. Working with members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Silver Mt. Zion, among others, this album is both experimental and melodic, both disjointed and cohesive in its approach. In former projects--Ethyl Meatplow, Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, and her version of Willie Nelson's Red-Headed Stranger--Carla Bozulich has always forged her own path, and Evangelista is a beautiful addition to that catalog. From the opening strains of the aptly labeled title song, to the soft churning of "Steal Away," to the chaotic "Baby, That's the Creeps," this album focuses on love and mercy and the importance of sound. Silence or scream, sound as a word as well as the force behind the music is vital. Imagery and music float in and out, showcasing flashes of story, tone poem, and impressionistic scenes in music and vocabulary, all anchored by that truly amazing voice. Evangelista makes me want to lie down, close my eyes, and simply listen. I can't think of a higher compliment for a piece of music. --Robert Arambel

4 out of 5 stars Baptism by the light of Hell's glowing coals.......2007-05-05

This album is intensely visual. I exercised patience last year so I waited on this one so it could be on my Christmas list. On the one hand, thank goodness I received it. On the other, "waiting" was a bonehead maneuver. I'm trying not to say anything here that may make someone come to think of this as an album in the "a collection of songs" sense. After the first time I listened to this, I was just like "good lord what just happened?"... and I mean that in a good way. I didn't listen to it very often for those first few months I had it. Like I said, it's not just a cd with some songs on it. Evangelista is an event.

Track one was initially (for me), and remains, the pinnacle of the album. The pictures in my mind when I listen to this track... indescribable. There is a scope and size to this track that is Beyond. Track 1 could and should be made into a movie. It is THAT big. I don't mean an action-packed Hollywood rave-up. There is what's been described as the boat noise, but I don't get any nautical feelings at all during any of this album. Track 1 is satan's cowboy preacher preparing you for what she possesses. This is Carla as the Hell Plains Drifter, but no scene of a blood-red western town has the power of inner destruction inherent to this track. Most importantly though is that this isn't a put-on. This isn't like the fake evil of bad metal. This is the emotional honesty of feeling trapped in darkness.

One thing that has changed for me is that now I can't spread out my listenings anymore. Evangelista is still an event, but it's one I'm craving so often that I've given in to it. I loved Carla before, but this... if she has more of this inside her... I can only wait and wonder "what's next?". She's often times not "singing" on this album in the way she does (did) with the Geraldine Fibbers or Scarnella, but the vocalizations here... the preaching... it is, for me, monstrously powerful stuff. Her voice is incredible.

My review focused on the first track, but there is indeed much more. That track though... it fully wraps the hellish blanket of the Evangelista around you, and from then on out it's a murky world of fear and foggy beauty. I'm giving this 4 stars for no other reason than this is a new pinnacle for Carla. She seems to have stepped into a whole new (or long trapped) part of herself. I'm saving that 5th star just because I bet she's going to surpass even this in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Love and mercy.......2006-07-10

I've loved Carla Bozulich's work forever - The Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, Ethyl Meatplow, her solo work - and this is my favorite work of hers. In fact, it's the cumulation o D'Oeil à oreille.

Fondamental.
