FIVE STARS!!!.......2004-07-24
an AWESOME CD! "You're Still a Young Man" is one of my favorite songs ever. "Down to the Nightclub" is such a great song. This CD is great.
An album that breathes!.......2004-04-12
I thought THE Tower of Power album was their 1973 "Tower of Power", until I was introduced to "Bump City"; an even funkier album. I'd never heard Tower of Power this RAW anywhere else. It's really nice to hear that they, once upon a time, could groove and make things work without trying to sound 101% clean, metronomic, and "correct". Tower of Power has an exceptionally funky sound throughout this album; especially Rocco's bass, is FAT! "Bump City", as opposed to MANY of their newer albums, is not sterile; it's human. It lives and breathes, and for most part it rocks and grooves like crazy. Of course, like on all their albums, there are a few up-hill tunes, like "Gone" and "You're Still a Young Man", but the album has unusually few tracks of that kind. For a raw sound and good mixture of material, I recommend ToP's first three albums, "East Bay Grease" (1970), "Bump City" (1972), and "Tower of Power" (1973). You've got to Funkifize!
Tower at their most concise.......2003-10-13
This album is Tower seeking to translate their awesome musicality and cult following into a signature sound that would appeal to a wider audience. Consequently, the songs are shorter than on their "East Bay Grease" debut album. It's also one of the Tower albums where you can play all the way through. This vocalist is not the Lenny Williams from their peak period, but he does a great job and you wish he had been able to stick around for a couple more albums. "Bump City" and "Down to the Nightclub" are great tunes, although they are also avaialble on the compilations.
If you're trying to get Tower albums, this is a worthwhile purchase although its not my favorite. Sadly, the pop success began to come with "Still a Young Man". This is a solid tune, but future Tower albums included more cheesy ballad numbers that diluted their funk and sought the pop audience. Moreover, Tower distinguishes themselves from other funk bands by their instrumental jams like "Squib Cakes" from Back To Oakland, and they hadn't added that component to their albums yet.
If you like the Tower from their peak period ["Tower of Power", "Back To Oakland", "Live"] and want to hear where that sound is coming from, "Bump City" is a great record to hear their early work.

What is Hip? This is HIP!.......2003-02-03
My college roommate had this album back in the day (1973/74) and I remember liking it back then, but I never became a huge Tower of Power fan (I was into hard rock). Recently I decided to check it out again after all these years and I bought it. My god, this album is ridiculously great! Every single song is great. What a contrast to most of the pablam that's being put out today. I've got 30 years of Tower of Power to catch up on. Next step is to check out all of T.O.P.'s other highly regarded CDs (primarily the early ones). Buy this album!
Still Greazy After All These Years.......2003-01-31
This is the first TOP album I ever saw in my fathers record collection in the 70s.Everytime I saw the cover I would become afraid and cover my ears thinking lightning and thunder were about to strike.Little did I know then,THAT WAS TRUE.The first time I actually played the record in the late 80s i definitely heard the thunder and lightnin that TOP is capable of producing and they still continue to do so.Rick Stevens was the grittiest voiced lead singer they had but alas it was only for one album and he was sentenced to 25 years in the joint for manslaughter 3 years later. However Lenny Williams (who co wrote "You Strike My Main Nerve") came forward to take them to the next level in 73

Customer Reviews:
Their best album!!!!.......2003-07-09
I remember first hearing about Paul Gilbert from a friend of mine way back in 1988 who had just been selected to attend GIT. Paul Gilbert was one of their prodigies and my friend Mike was anxious to get out there and make his mark. I remember hearing Mr Big for the first time on MTV's Hard 30 for all you metalheads out there and they ROCKED!!! Addicted to that rush was so much different from anything anybody was doing at the time except maybe for Damn Yankees, but those guys were already established musicians. Anyway I digress, Bump Ahead really showed me that these guys were more than just a flash in the pan. Sure "To Be With You" was a mega-hit, but Lean Into It had so much more going for it, especially the underrated "Voodoo Kiss" and "Green Tinted Sixties Mind". O especially loved the liner note on that one where the question was asked have you ever noticed how movies from the 60's have a greenish tint to them?
Bump Ahead has more depth and sincerity in the music, the singing, the playing and they finally let Billy Sheehan off his leash! Great album. I consider this to be their best effort. I wish the original lineup was still together making music because these guys were special. Ritchie Kotzen is a talented guitar player, but there just something between Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan that just fit perfectly.
Underrated--album and band.......2002-05-12
The problem with pop music--even when it comes to quality bands like this one--is that artists get defined by one big hit song. For Mr. Big, it was the ballad "To Be With You" off their previous album to this one. While that is a great song and album, this effort is about equally as good. The band stayed true to their sound while adding a few nice twists.
This band is not just a ballad band. Take the opening track on the album, the hard-rocking "Colorado Bulldog". Catchy, with a prominent bass line done by the great Billy Sheehan, this song kicks. Nearly as impressive is the next track--the uptempo, melodic "Price You Gotta Pay". The third track is the first ballad--the lovely "Promise Her The Moon", but that is followed by another mid-tempo rocker, the attitude-laced "What's It Gonna Be".
Next comes a cover that on the surface doesn't seem to fit but is actually very nicely done--"Wild World". The emotional way in which Eric Martin delivers it here brings a nice new twist to an old song. This was also the only top 40 charter on this album. Following is a mid-tempo but also melodic track--"Mr. Gone", which is followed by another true rocker in "The Whole World's Gonna Know".
Out of the final four tracks, two of them are ballads. "Nothing But Love" is pretty good, but "Ain't Seen Love Like That", which I remember getting a little radio airplay, is a bit better. The former is the track that gives me my one slight criticism of this album: the "one too many ballads syndrome". Both are still quality songs, though, and they are broken up by the catchy "Tempermental". The last track is another rocker of sorts, "Mr. Big". Further proof that these guys excel on more than ballads.
No one was giving these guys the time of day back when this album came out, as the Pearl Jams and Nirvanas of the world overshadowed all else. Nonetheless, this is a strongly-recommended listen for melodic rock fans and fans of '80s rock. Brief popularity aside, this band is far better than average musically--something that this album demonstrates.
Mr. Biggest?.......2000-12-09
As I said in my review of Aerosmith's "Pump", I always try to be a bit different to everyone else. For this reason, I am trying to find a reason to prefer this to Mr. Big's probable number 1 album, "Lean Into It". You know, I might just be able to find more than one.
Where Lean Into It perfected the sound the band started on their first album, Bump Ahead shows more progression. The sounds are beefier and fatter, with Billy Sheehan's bass playing taking more of a dominant role -- no bad thing when we are talking about the greatest rock bassist on the scene. The whole thing's heavier than "Lean Into It", and where that album seemed dominated by commercial AOR numbers, this one has its fair share of rockers. The ballads, and I love ballads, are of the usual high standard, and this is everything we've come to expect of Mr. Big -- non-stop quality. What else do you expect from such a flawless collection of musicians? They don't come much better than the afore-mentioned Sheehan and Paul Gilbert.
It's nice when a band isn't afraid to move forward. It's nice, too, when that forward motion leaves the fans pleased. Success for Mr. Big! Standout tracks... well, Colorado Bulldog, Mr. Gone, The Whole Word's Gonna Know, and Nothing But Love spring to mind, but I have to recommend this whole CD to you unreservedly.
So... just one question remains: Is it better than "Lean Into It"? Hmmm... I don't know... probably on a par. Different, but the better for it.
Another Terribly Underrated Band.......2000-07-10
It's nice to see Mr. Big has released a new album with guitarist Ritchie Kotzen. It's called Get Over It, check it out here at amazon.com. If you like good melodious music written and performed by talented artists like Mr. Big, you will like it a lot.
As for 'Bump Ahead', it has everything. As another reviewer said, there is simply no one word to describe it. It's musical diversity really shows off the vast musical talent of the band and the wide vocal range of Eric Martin. It's kind of upsetting though, that this band never really got the respect they deserved. But now that some of the real bands from rock's golden era, the 1980's, have come back onto the scene with new albums (Poison, Motley Crue, Slaughter, etc.), maybe that injustice will finally be rectified.
Staying big..........2000-04-18
More speed, aggression, but also more melody, and even two covers showcase the full range of musical abilities of Paul Gilbert,Eric Martin,Billy Sheehan, and Pat Torpey. On the Free cover,'Mr.Big',Sheehan emerges as a very busy and upfront bass player-and this applies to most of the tracks on this album, revealing that the Mr.Big formula has more in common with the seventies as a musical approach, rather than the guitar driven eighties.

For some of guitarist John Scofield's fans, his best albums date come from the 1980s: Electric Outlet and Still Warm. Recorded before his fusion ascendancy with drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Gary Grainger, these albums are primal and funky, yet also allude to the eerie tonal palettes of Scofield's onetime employer Miles Davis during the trumpeter's 1970s electric period. On Bump, Sco's world is weird again. Joined by members of esoteric underground Manhattan bands such as Sex Mob, Soul Coughing, and Deep Banana Blackout, Sco gets down and dirty, playing some terrifically raunchy guitar. Funky New Orleans rhythms fill "Beep Beep" and the Meters-ish "Kelpers." Grits and gravy get slathered on "Three Sisters," and ethereal tone tableaus impregnate "Fez" and the acoustic "Kilgeffen." Soul Godfather James Brown is also given his rightful due on the scalding groove number "Drop and Roll." Though his guitar style is now as recognizable as any current voice in jazz, John Scofield continues to challenge and redefine himself. --Ken Micallef
Customer Reviews:
More than just funk.......2002-02-12
Everyone seems to focus on how funky this is, and yes, there is a large helping of deep funk grooves, but with repeated listenings, its more sophisticated than that. The great thing about this cd is how Sco switches up the mood within a song. A mutated funky chorus will give way to a touching, almost sentimental bridge. A feel-good-cheese-jazz segment will open up into a broad, airy, floating space. I'm still caught off guard by these changes. The sampling is unobtrusive and adds to the alternate-universe vibe. Throw in an abstract of perfectly crafted, yet somehow sloppy solos, and this thing is mind-blowing. If you liked A-Go-Go, this takes awhile longer to get into, but the rewards are there.
good grooves by the truckload....heavy funk,uplifting spirit.......2001-10-03
A really fine album, one which initially disapponted me...I thought it was bland....not at all, this guy knows what he is doing and this one really grooves:hard snares crack, bass drops, and John Schofield skitters some good grooves on top of the sticky funk..they really sound like they are having fun too...It reminded me very much of the equally fine new album by hard avant garde funksters,23 Skiddoo, who have just released a wikkid album("Dawning") with UK heavy reggae horns section Bammie and Eddie Tan Tan,and the legend Pharoah Saunders..If you love "Bump"check out what Skiddoo are doing...It has the same understated power and uplifting grooves."Dawning"by Skidoo, and "Bump"are two albums I just keep coming back to.This album is distinctive, because most of that Blue Note and Verve catalogue kicks in with some heavy heavy grooves, which have been sampled endlessly, but so many of their releases groove heavily, but then seem to tail off into longwindedness,or blandness. Why is that? Just speculating, but I think Blue Note marketing and pr people et al try to please too many people, and end up by boring those of us into intense sustained heavy vibes...the best tracks of this album MOST DEFINITELY do not spiral off into blandness.
Funkay!.......2001-06-03
Groovier than Sco's "A Go Go," with more driving rhythms -- lots of conga and bongos. John goes heavier on the guitar licks. More rock-oriented and funky than "A Go Go"; if that was an album to snap your fingers to and bob your head, "Bump" is one to stand up and boogie to.
sco's got the funk.......2001-02-08
we need the funk, and john scofield provides it. chill down and groove with it.

i got an "demo" disk of this cd after a phish concert, me and my friends were walking to my car and this dude was like hey come here i have free cds. He gave us this cd, and a south african native band demo disk. This cd is really good and if you like mmw, youll appreciate it. but if you dont its still cool.

just wow.......2006-01-10
Every time a track from this CD comes up on the shuffle,
it just makes me smile. Wow, he's good. Traditional and modern at the same time.
A solid blues album.......2003-05-02
Papa John Creach does double duty on this album as a vocalist and solo violinist.
On this album, he is working with the Bernie Pearl Blues Band, an excellent ensemble even if Papa John were not working with them.
Papa John can do with a violin what Izhak Perlman can't.
The CD is on the Bee Bump Records label - not exactly mainstream but it should be.
The best cut is the "Bumble Bee Blues" but the entire album is one you will want to have - DEMAND to have - if you enjoy the blues.

I was so excited to get this cd because I was looking for the I feel it version of bump and grind. It was in excellent condition no scratches and it played loud and clear. thank you so much
R.Kelly is the Greatest.......2006-06-17
R.Kelly's music is fabulous. I dont care if he's a sexual predator, his sex life has nothing to do with me. This is a rare CD, I havent found it anywhere else except on sites like Amazon. Each and every song as well as remix is fullfilling, I'm happy that I bought this CD...if I hadn't then I would miss out on alot. He also has a exclusive song for this CD which is the Bump N' Grind- How I Feel It Mix. Its the best remix that he has made so far.
I first heard this song on his cassette version of this album in my Mom's car. After that I was determined to get this anyway possible.
The King of Baby-making Music and Remixes.......2005-12-25
I am R. Kelly's biggest fan and although I love and own every single cd he ever made, I have to admit this song started his career. It is a classic that will continue to be listed as a track on every r&b compilation cd, played on every r&b radio station, and used to get people in the mood for exotic nights to come. He is a legend and absolutely the most creative and musically inclined person ruling the music sector of entertainment. Buy this cd and you'll keep it forever.
R.'s best song ever.......2005-06-05
This is the tightest song he has made off his album "12 Play". This man can sing. Doesn't matter whether u luv him, hate him, or not. He's still good. Just like Marvin Gaye when he put out hits like "I Heard Through the Grapevine", "Let's Get It On", "What's Going On", "Sexual Healing", among others. As to say, R. Kelly is the godfather of our time and still making good music. I appreciate the success that he did 4 "Chocolate Factory" and "Happy People/U Saved Me" (which I don't have yet sooner or later I will". But 'nuff said and enjoy the Genius, the Pied Piper, and the Soul Survivor of R&B. Spiritual R. Kelly vs. Material R. Kelly, Good vs. Bad. Check out Marvin Gaye's IN OUR LIFETIME and/or MIDNIGHT LOVE by any chance.
"I don't see nothing wrong with a little Bump N' Grind".......2005-05-04
I saw the tape. I BET YOU DON'T. Next Time, Rapist Kelly, if your going to Bump N grind someone, bump N grind someone who can legally buy Cigarrattes. And he really tells on hisself in the remix with the lyric : "Ooh, Child. Things are gonna get a little freakier" He said CHILD. I can't stand Rapist Kelly

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for Halloween!.......2007-01-04
We enjoyed broadcasting the tunes thru our mp3 player on Halloween night. THe trick or treaters and their parents really enjoyed the music
What, you call this scary music?.......2005-07-07
I'm familiar with most of the pieces found in this CD, and I can say I don't think they are frightening at all. They're great and highly enjoyable in their own right (the 'Danse Macabre' by Camille Saint-Saens is lovely dance music), but if one's intention is to bring together a collection of pieces of truly scary classical music, then this anthology hasn't done the job.
Here's a list of what I would consider TRULY TERRIFYING works of classical music:
~Ralph Vaughan Williams' 4th & 6th symphonies (especially the 2nd movement of each of them)
~Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'
~Gyorgy Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' and 'Lux Aeterna' (used in the film '2001')
~Almost anything by Bela Bartok (but especially his 'The Miraculous Mandarin')
If you want to be truly frightened, go for the said pieces!
Music Is Very Good, However................2004-08-14
The music on this CD is all very good, but as I play it, I don't really feel that "Bump in the Night" sensation throughout. Since it appears to be marketed for fun Halloween gatherings, I cannot honestly say that it will jumpstart the mood for the average party-goer. While "Funeral March For a Marionette" is extremely creepy and sets the mood (for those of you baby-boomers who don't recognize the title---this was the theme music to the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series), other tunes kind of pull the plug on the momentum. Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" might ring Seasonal for classical music buffs, but I think your everyday Joe will picture helicopters soaring over Vietnam and the cry "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"
FOUR STARS if you just want a nice sampling of bold classical music, and TWO STARS if you want it to go "Bump!" in the Night.
Good Classical type Halloween music anthology.......2004-07-14
While this CD might cover most of the standard "creepy classics", there are a few more it could have covered, but frankly, the only song on the whole thing I didn't care for was Ives "Halloween". Some people may think that completely discordant music is great, but I do NOT! Otherwise, everything else was a great selection, and very entertaining. Definitely worth having, esp. if you like classical music.
Good for Halloween Gatherings.......2003-09-25
If you're looking for a fun CD with spooky sounding music that reminds you of old Disney cartoons...I think that this CD was meant to be fun, NOT for the classical conisseur. It would be a nice CD for a Halloween gathering, or something similar, as background music.

Rock, Roll with a handful Soul!.......2004-04-16
Ian 'Mac' McLagan and The Bump Band's latest offering...Rise & Shine! holds some real 'listen again' classics from the subtle to the extreme - accurate, respectable rock n roll with a popular twist.
Mac successfully attempts to exemplify all that is the modern radio rock sound. Singing and playing with a conviction and a sincerity that will melt the heart of even the most stoic of listeners, producing rousing, well-crafted rock songs intertwined with heart pounding love ballads.
The Bump Band show off their range of skills from the soft, heart-warming 'nod and a wink' to Ronnie Lane on Wishing, Hoping, Dreaming to the heavier Jerry Lee Lewis induced keyboard driven Your Secret and the mix of fulfilling lyrics and strong music on Lying and Date With An Angel.
The mixing is tremendous and the album flows perfectly with that right mix of heavy and soft, making it easy listening from start to finish taking you through different moods, different sounds, but always powerful music from the band. It all goes rushing toward the fantastic 'drunk rock' anthem The Wrong Direction, a sure fire hit for the Faces had Mac written it in the early 70's.
You're My Girl is a blistering start, all chugging guitars from native Texan 'Scrappy' Jud Newcomb and ex-Californian Gurf Morlix with Mac's Hammond lending support, before moving into more melodic territory for the next few songs, including the highly infectious Been A Long Time. The album's highlight,......the superb acoustic 5 minute ballad Anytime follows next - Mac's 'song for Kim' featuring the vocal talents of Patty Griffin and the wonderful cello playing from Brian Standefer...then onto the Price Of Love (featuring the Texacali Horns, Joe Sublett and Darrell Leonard) a sad and sorry tale of missing a loved one, reliving that naked, human three-in-the-morning feeling when the empty bottle starts talking back at you and the difference between love and lone is no difference at all.
She Ain't My Girl and Rubies In Her Hair showcase the Bumps 'rhythm section'...Don Harvey on drums and George Reiff, bass - backed up by guest John Bush, congas (on the former)- both are love songs, incredibly catchy up-tempo tunes with quite an edgy sound to them.
Rise & Shine! - A perfect blend of superb material and passionate delivery make this a classic album. This is my favourite Mac album, followed very closely by Best Of British...primarily for it's overriding sense of homely charm and rustic calm, on which time does not so much 'pass slowly' as require an immediate re-listen! To refer to it as 'varied' is a bit of an understatement, being a host of tunes to sit back and listen to in all moods and seasons, swinging from an infectious joyous bounce to a wrapped up warm frosty calm.
The artwork is stitched together beautifully, from the 'alarm clock' sleeve portrait to the 'English Breakfast' (made in Austin, USA by Kim McLagan) before and after shots on the disc and inner sleeve.
This superb collection of blues, rock and soul is the The Bump Bands' finest hour as well as being their most diverse album to date.
