5 out of 5 stars A good overview of Cass' recordings........2007-05-19

What is great about this CD is that it has true rarities by Cass , as well as the hits that she's known for. Firstly, it does have a good overview of Cass' hit singles DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME, IT'S GETTING BETTER, MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC, NEW WORLD COMING, WORDS OF LOVE with The Mamas & The Papas and more. But what is great is the rare songs never on CD before like her 1972 RCA singles DOES ANYBODY LOVE YOU and [ IF YOU'RE GONNA ] BREAK ANOTHER HEART - 2 of my favorite Cass songs. Plus it has the unreleased EAST OF THE SUN WEST OF THE MOON , which is only found here. Plus, it has a few rare jingles that Cass did for Hardees in 1973. Also has songs from every solo album that Cass did, from 1968-1973.

It's not a complete career history , which would have to be at least 2 CD's. So, you don't get her early folk & bluesy numbers like WILD WOMEN or YOUNG GIRLS LAMENT with The Big Three from 1963, or The Mugwumps folk-rock from 1964. And of course it doesn't cover The Mamas & The Papas much, but then that's easily available & most fans own the group's recordings anyway. But it is essential for any Cass fan to have the rare tracks. The cover could have been a better photo, & the booklet is only 4 pages [ though the liner notes are good ], but the music is here & that's what matters.

4 out of 5 stars Mama Cass' Music.......2007-02-11

I had forgotten about Mama Cass' solo career and was excited when I came across this CD for sale. It is a tad monotonous as pretty much all the songs are love songs, but it's redemption is the great voice of Cass Elliott.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation .......2006-11-29

What a great voice! This is the best compilation of her music to date. As a bonus, it includes the previously unreleased song "East Of The Sun (And West Of The Moon)". Amazon, thank you for making this CD available to us in the USA!

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Cass.......2005-12-07

This is a blessing! Just buy it - the remastering is brilliant.
Until they re-release all her solo stuff - this is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Cass Elliot.......2005-05-24

God, she was good!! The sound on this disc is superb, and the selection of songs is excellent. The material sounds so fresh and new, it reminded me just how much I loved her music when I was first introduced to it 30+ years ago. It made me aware, again, of how much I miss her. A great sampling of her work!

Bounce is a pretty accurate title for this Sondheim show, which receives a cast album after having been seemingly everywhere but Broadway. In a way this is fitting for a musical that's been on Sondheim's mind since 1952, when he first read about the adventures of the two Mizner brothers in The New Yorker. Based on this Fall 2003 Kennedy Center production, figuring out why Bounce doesn't quite click is tricky. Is it the heard-it-before quality of the material? The title track is disappointingly by-the-numbers Sondheim, for instance. Or is it the uneven cast? Howard McGillin lacks the outsize personality needed to infuse life into scheming Wilson Mizner (a part played by Nathan Lane in a 1999 Off-Broadway "workshop" of the show, then titled Wise Guys). But then Michelle Pawk does wonderfully in the sultry ballad "What's Your Rush?" before eclipsing McGillin in their duet, "The Best Thing That Ever Has Happened." Got it! Bounce may not work as a show, but a few of its songs are bound to show up in a cabaret near you sooner rather than later. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Bookend for Saturday Night.......2007-04-25

This show has the same problem as Boch and Harnick's "Rothschilds" - lots of craft and obvious talent, but who gives a damn that members of a family cornered the market using questionable methods? It's like spending Thanksgiving with those relatives of your own that you'd rather not.

Artistically it's the same level as Sondheim's first show, "Saturday Night" - interesting but you wouldn't pay it much attention if it's author had never written anything else. Which makes his career arc rather like one of Sondheim's better shows - brilliant with stunning passages, but ending a bit clumsy, unresolved or just fizzling. A master artist like Sondheim you'd hope for some kind of epiphany, a "Tempest". "Bounce" isn't a "Tempest".

The recording is a little threadbare - the mother wobbly voiced, sythesizer in lieu of orchestra, bland second lead. In the heightened world of musical theater this just isn't a Sondheim worthy story.

3 out of 5 stars Not One of Sondheim's Best, But A Couple of Nice Songs.......2006-12-19

With so many great musicals written by Mr. Sondheim, efforts such as "Bounce" seem flimsy in comparison. The cast's voices are fine, but most of the songs simply lack the composer's typical magic.

There are, however, a couple noteable tracks, namely the title track, "What's Your Rush", and "The Best Thing That Ever Happened".

Maybe with some revisions, the production will eventually arrive on Broadway - though it may be limping when (if) it does.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite..........2006-10-09

Sonheim is one of the days best composers, but we all have bad days right? This was Sondheims bad day. The music is boring, Listening to the soundtrack doesnt make you want to see the show, no great ballads, basicly NOT WORTH $20. If you see this at a used CD store somewhere its one to for the collection, but not for any one looking for Sondheim. I would suggest this solely for Sondheim collectors, its not one for listening too. Favorite song: "The Best Thing That Has Evere Happened"

1 out of 5 stars awful.......2006-05-07

I caught the Goodman Theatre production in Chicago and enjoyed it immensely, although it was obviously greatly flawed. I was fairly sure that several of the numbers were going to have to be cut before it reached Broadway--and I assumed they'd be cut before it reached the Kennedy Center--and that the name would have to be changed. The book was actually much stronger than the score, which is unusual in a Sondheim production, but the book was entertaining, the staging was effective, and Richard Kind, although he can't sing at all, was great.

Well, here is the score in its likely final form. The show is still called "Bounce!" (joining the not-so-proud tradition of hyperbolic exclamation-point musicals). All the numbers are intact (with the addition of a very lame "bonus track" number that never even made it to Chicago). I've listened to the cast record many times now, and on the whole I can't stand it. I know all of Sondheim's scores, and there's no question in my mind that this is the worst.

The packaging is disproportionately lavish (disproportionate to the lack of content on the disc itself), which to my mind makes the thing even sadder.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Sheep of Sondheim Scores.......2005-03-06

It took Sondheim ten years to follow up his 1994 masterpiece "Passion", and when "Bounce" made its debut in Chicago during the summer of 2003, many didn't know what to make of it. It played later that year at the Kennedy Center in DC, but, lacking the finances, did not come to Broadway. It's too bad, because, although there are quite a few flaws, "Bounce" really is a wonderful score.

"Bounce" tells the story of the Mizner brothers, whose peculiar journey started during the Gold Rush, and took them all the way to Alaska. The brothers, played impeccably by Richard Kind and Howard McGillin, couldn't be more different: Addison (Kind) is a closeted homosexual and sensitive Mama's boy; Wilson (McGillin) is a suave cad who falls hard for Nellie (the always terrific Michele Pawk), a dancer/grifter in Nome.

From there, they go to pretty much everywhere, and many problems ensue: Addy cannot come to terms with his sexuality; Wilson becomes addicted to drugs; and Nellie is an alcoholic. Addy and Willie's beloved mother (Jane Powell) dies towards the end of the first act. Addy falls in love with a rich young rebel, Hollis (Gavin Creel), who returns his affections, but, since this is Sondheim after all, nothing can turn out right.

After seeing this show in previews at the Kennedy Center, I can definitely testify that this show has several problems (mostly the book, and the fact that Gavin Creel was so incredibly underused), but the score is not one of them. It offers traditional Sondheim, with witty, esoteric lyrics and gorgeous voices.

Hopefully, this show will make it to Broadway in the near future. Until then, we can be glad that this lovely cast album was made.

It would be impossible to overstate Abe Schwartz's influence on the development of klezmer music in America. He was a fine violinist and pianist, an excellent composer, an arranger who added modern instruments like saxophones and banjos to the Old World sound, and a bandleader with a nose for talent who helped launch the careers of Dave Tarras and Naftule Branwein, among others. The Klezmer King collects 25 tracks from the 75 or so sides that Schwartz recorded for Columbia between 1917 and 1935. Schwartz was remarkably versatile, and the selections include traditional dance tunes like "Roumanian Doina," Yiddish pop tunes such as "Die Greene Cousine," which was later a hit for Benny Goodman as "My Little Cousin," and sly social commentary like "Der Automobile." Also here are three versions of the old melody "Russian Sher," which were recorded in 1917, 1927, and 1935. Listening to them, you can trace Schwartz's style as it evolves from its European roots to a more American version of klezmer. The sound quality of these rare recordings is outstanding; there are almost no clicks, pops, or hiss to mar the music. The Klezmer King is an essential recording from one of the pioneers of New World klezmer. --Michael Simmons

5 out of 5 stars Abe Schwartz -- King of Yiddish Music.......2007-02-22

Abe Schwartz was an American klezmer pioneer who discovered such talents as Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein as well as inspiring the contemporary klezmer revival bands. Don't miss this collection of his original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Old-Time American Roots Klezmer Music.......2004-04-15

Abe Schwartz and his orchestra developed and defined klezmer music in America from the mid-1920s up until the 1940s and early '50s. If the beginning sounds of American roots klezmer music is of interest, this is the CD you want. I find that half-way through, my mind wanders. It sounds too schmaltzy for me. I love Central European and Balkan style music ... this CD has diluted versions of this styling. This CD contains Central/East European "cross over" music that is becoming Americanized. In reality it is not quite either, besides the violin, there is the requiste clarinet, other instruments are saxaphone, tuba, piccolo, alto sax, bass sax, drums, and other percussions. The music occasionally sounds like a Balkan Brass band ... fortunately the longing and nostalgia of the klezmer sound, the Jewish roots are evident in all the tracks. The 'sher', 'doina', and 'hora' are types of dance music played by this famous composer, bandleader, and fiddler. My favorite is "Escorting the Parents of the Bride and Groom Home" ("Fihren Di Mechutonim Aheim-Tanz') which features Naftule Brandwein on the clarinet. His improvisations and glissandos are brilliant. The famous klezmer clarinetist, Dave Tarras, is also featured on many of these recordings. "Hasidic Melodies" ("Ch'sidishe Nigunim") is one of my favorite examples of his playing. His command of the clarinet and the creative musical phrasing is phenomenal. "The Greenhorn Girl Cousin" ("Die Green Couisine") is famous for the music, lyrics, and message which brought to the public's attention the bad working conditions in the sweatshops, the first job of immigrants arriving in the USA. It is a catchy tune with Abe Schwartz featured on the violin and Abraham Moskowitz singing the vocals. Spin-offs of this song were written by many including one by Benny Goodman. Overall, if discovering and investigating early klezmer roots music is your goal, this CD will meet your criteria with highest expectations. Otherwise, give me "The Klezmatics", "The Klezmer Conservatory Band" or any modern klezmer group which expresses the music in a more explosive and exciting manner. For me, the modern sound is much more appealing than the early roots which is on this CD. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

4 out of 5 stars Joy, Joy, Happy, Happy.......2004-02-05

I came to Klezmer music via Izaak Perlmann's "In the Fiddler's House," which is one of my all time favorite CDs. I'm just learning about the genre, via other Amazon reviewers, so have just recently arrived at this and other "Klezmer roots" CDs (Dave Tarras, as another reviewer mentions, is also excellent). It's just exceedingly harmonious, well orchestrated, tightly knit music, transported from the old world to the new. The tradition lives on, and an increasing number of us goyim are coming to appreciate it. Sound quality, these can't compete with modern recordings like those of the Klezmer Conservatory Band, or the Klezmatics, but it will definitely give you an idea of where they learned from. Mazaltov!!

4 out of 5 stars Close your eyes and you're at a Jewish wedding.......2003-03-31

If you've ever heard new groups like the Yiddish Cup Klezmer Band and The Klezmatics and marveled at how they got all those great old tunes, look no further. Abe Schwartz, the Klezmer King is now available on CD. Before this, 78 RPM records these were remastered from was the only place you could hear him.

The Klezmer King album is old, both in sound and style. But keep in mind that clarinet klezmer is more of an American thing. This music is a generation or two removed from the original originals. Songs called Russian Sher and Roumanian Doina indicate that, just like today, wedding musicians from the old country were jamming the hits of the day as well as the "Jewish" stuff.

But it was guys like Schwartz, Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers, whom the new wave learned from. But unlike the younger versions, these melodies don't seem to have jazz-like improvisation. They are straight ahead rollickers, heavy on catchy rhythm and melody. There are a total of twenty-five tracks on the album and most are short and fast.

The instruments employed are the violin, played by Schwartz, the clarinet and horns. The beat is so danceable that you forget there's no percussion. That's traditional, because back in the old country, if the klezmorim had any percussion at all it was just a bass drum.

For you Yiddish speakers, The Klezmer King is not all instrumental. There are tracks that start with lively shouts as well as straight singing pieces like Mameniu Liubeniu or the satirical Hurra Far Unzerheld Levine.

Then there's Die Bolbriker Chasseneh, which has Schwartz introducing a bride and groom in between slow music. He raises his voice, half speaking and half singing in rapid-fire Yiddish. Then he gasps out that the couple is now officially married and the band breaks into fast, bouncy jamming. Close your eyes and you can imagine you're one of the guests. That goes for most of the tunes here.

If you didn't know the difference between a bulgar and freilach and nigun before, you better start learning. Abe Schwartz taught long of young folks about what it takes to be a king of klezmer. Companion CDs of Dave Tarras and the Musiker Brothers are available from Legacy Recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Time warp.......2002-08-11

Listening to the 25 old but timeless cuts on this set of remastered Yiddish greats provides many layers of enjoyment. In hearing these long-forgotten tunes, one enjoys clarinet and violin strains influenced by ancient melodies and traditions. And some will recognize varied renditions of old favorites. The 6th cut, for example, Dovid'l Bazetzt die Kalleh, is engrained into my memory from Jewish Music, a Benedict Silberman recording, circa 1955, of Yiddish orchestrations.

The music is all decidedly Eastern European. The Roumanian Doina, for example, played by Abe Schwartz (violin) and his daughter, strongly resembles the brilliant Rom music generated by the same region.

No wonder. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Abe Schwartz (1881-1963) emigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1899 and became the most influential composer, fiddler and bandleader to shape and define modern U.S. klezmer groups. He arrived in the musical establishment via an acquaintance from small jobs with David Nodiff, a part-time composer and so-called A&R (for artist and repertoire) man for Columbia Records, who helped bring klezmer and other ethnic musicians to record companies. Nodiff hired Schwartz in 1917 to find new Jewish talent and head up instrumental recording sessions.

This recording provides some of the time and style progression of Yiddish American music from 1917, when Schwartz recorded Russian Scissors for Columbia with the Oriental Orchestra. In 1927, he recorded the same tune again as Russishe Shehr, in a brassier rendition played by his own orchestra. Still a later 1935 version can be heard in Russian Sher National Dance, the 22nd cut, recorded with the Orkestr Novinka. (And that is the most recent recording here.) The musical and stylistic progressions from 1917 and 1918 through 1935 are admirably explained in an accompanying 8-page pamphlet.

This is not the jazzy stuff many will remember from the 1940s and 1950s. It came before the Barry Sisters, before Naftule Brandwein and Dave Tarras. Abe Schwartz was their mentor.

What you get here is a time warp, filled with early 20th century Jewish musical genius. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed.......2007-06-24

I never tire of listening to this CD. I saw the show in Atlanta several years ago and then again in Nashville--featuring Mary Murfitt herself--and think it is wonderful. I'm always surprised at how such a hilarious/silly premise can set the stage for a moving exploration of friendship, relationships between parents and children, and the joy that comes in facing and conquering our fears. I remember sitting at the side of the theater in Nashville and watching the audience, which previously had been rolling with laughter, be spellbound when the cast began "Songs My Mama Sang" with that gentle mandolin strumming in the background. It was magic--and this "little" show with great writing and thoughtful performances made it happen. I only wish it were performed more often, but then it takes a really talented cast to make it work. There will always be the CD, though.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, fun music.......2000-05-03

This is a strong woman's musical with great music that doesn't get tiring to listen to. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to perform a great musical for theatre.
