Back in 2000 ‘Beats & Pieces I' was generally considered to be a nod to the ‘left side', a ‘selection of cuts intended for the alternative dancefloor. Four years on, the music has sneaked into society's consciousness major corporations engage underground producers to write music for their advertisements, gardening & travel programs are soundtracked with artists as diverse as Mr Scruff, Kenny Dope & The New MasterSounds.

Beats & Pieces III compiled ‘live' by Mr. BBE (Peter Adarkwah), is a selection of music straight from the record boxes, which regularly make a journey to hip London venues Cherry Jam, Neighbourhood, Zakudia and Bar Rumba, where Peter DJ's on a regular basis.

A perfect portal into the sound world of medieval Russia, this selection of liturgical material, drawn from a tradition harking back to the 11th century, includes unadorned monophonic chant as well as ceremonial pieces in polyphonic styles developed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the sonorities of the former occasionally creating enjoyably spooky, ringing overtones in the generous acoustic. The men of Deisus sing with an almost visceral depth of commitment and, as might be expected, the low basses are profoundly in a class of their own.

This disk is a must for every lover of male Russian choirs! Don't get confused by the name of the choir (I assume it is based on Greek deisis `prayer') or the commercial design of the booklet: this is simply the very best of Russian choral chant that has been published this season. The fourteen singers of the choir perform ancient chants, that have partly been deciphered here for the first time, and so are absolutely unique. Because of the high quality of singing and the choice of repertoire, Deisus can be compared with leading choirs such as the famous Patriarchate Choir of Mr.Grindenko. The chants performed on this splendid disk, all in honour of the Virgin Mary, are either homophonic or polyphonic, in a pleasant alternation. They share the quality of monastic austerity that makes them absolutely captivating: the listener is transposed to another world, a world of quiet and piece. Warmly recommended!

Anyone who hasn't heard Russian chants performed by deep voices has a real delight ahead and a profound musical experience. This recording captivates from beginning to end. The voices of the Deisus Choir, singing heretofore unpublished chants, took this listener onto a soundscape he didn't know existed. The choir emerges like the breath of God and rolls on in a vibrant acoustic that's perfectly suited to the voices, which resonate as much in the solar plexus as in the ear. I've collected a good number of recordings of chants (including the best-selling disc of the Spanish monks that came out some years ago), but the present recording by the Deisus Choir is now at the top of my list.

I've heard Ezio's voice and he's fantastic! His voice is firm and doesn't fail to hold the listener's attention. Some of the operas he performed in should have been filmed. Then we could see how he really performed. I've never heard this CD, but I'm sure I've heard many of the arias on it. I recommend this to any Ezio Pinza fan.

havent written very many reviews lately... mostly jus because i havent been inspired to do so, although there are many albums out there that im feelin right now... ...chalk it up to laziness. it wouldn be the first time.

been spendin vast amounts of my free time scroungin thru the various local music stores lookin for somethin... ...me-definitive... done picked up a whole lotta funkadelic, some underground rap (mf doom, haiku d'etat, some jon doe remixes, etc), not anuff jazz as i would like (open for ideas, yall)...

anyway... ...i was finta get john legend's cd when i come across this thang herre and you know me, rather go with the 'unknown quantity' than the 'next new hyped sensation'... no disrespeck to john l, tho... i'll getchu next time dude, i swair on a stacka apples!

now, how do i describe this thang herre??? ...dont know.

how bout: low-key-earth-level-nearly/non-neo-soul music?
(shoot, that works for me!) brotha aint got the bestess/smoothess voice, but he has his own sound and is pretty darn masterful with it. ...let's call him the male version of amel larrieux! i think thats a real good comparrison yall.
...some sunday music; not gospel, not sacred, but definitely self-respective. the brotha's alright with me.
