Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Album Description

Play With The Changes marks 4hero's first album in six years. Influenced by underground techno as much as Chicago soul, their music is a synthesis of past and future, artificial and organic, strange and familiar.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars bacharach freezer.......2007-07-20

5 out of 5 stars Totally satisfying.......2007-06-24

This 4hero release definitely has more soul and jazz than any previous ones but they haven't abandoned their jungle, drum & bass and break beat roots entirely. The result is an album that goes in many different directions, covers a lot of ground but still manages to sound cohesive and consistent. I believe this is the best 4hero release yet.

Vocally there's a lot on offer too - straight ahead singing, spoken word, rap - and again, it all fits together very nicely. I hear influences from the 80s, hints of Roy Ayers and I was even reminded of M.F.S.B.

Highlights include: The thumping, orchestral opener, "Morning Child", featuring Carina Andersson; "Look Inside", featuring FACE; the slow, sweeping, soulful "Give In", featuring vocals by Darien Brockington and rap & additional vocals by Phonte of Little Brother (Again?! That's the third time in less than two weeks!! I definitely have to get my Little Brother CDs soon!); the jazzy samba-esque title track (written old-time Donald Byrd/Alphonse Mouzon collaborator, Larry Mizell), featuring "original" vocals by Talita Long & Larry Mizell with "additional" vocals by Dego & Kaidi Tatham (this is the song that reminds me of Roy Ayers); "The Awakening", with spoken word written and performed by Ursula Rucker; the gorgeous instrumental "Sophia" (this is the song that reminds me of M.F.S.B.); the jazzy instrumental "Why Don't You Talk?", featuring a scorching saxophone solo by Jason Yarde; the bouncy "Bed Of Roses", featuring former Shalamar girl Jody Watley; and the much too short closer, "Dedication To The Horse", with its wailing guitar work by Dave Okumu.

The controversial Stevie Wonder cover, "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You?)" is okay (I like the second half of the song a lot more than the first) but nothing special. Vocally and instrumentally, the song seems to travel the exact same path as the original, note for note. I've always believed that if you're brave enough to want to do a Stevie song on your album, you'd better be ready to do something new and exciting with it otherwise your efforts will end up sounding like a pale imitation. I say it again: it's a good attempt, it shows what a good singer Terry Devos is and if you don't have the original version, you might love it. Personally, I just don't feel it adds anything to the album and it could've stood tall and proud quite easily without it.

Overall, I think this album will appeal to broadminded jazz and soul lovers alike and if you like people like Incognito or Zero 7 (or Agent K, Silhouette Brown or Bruno E, I'm reliably informed), then you'll really get into this. Totally satisfying and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing .......2007-06-23

I have been 4 hero fan for the last few years once I heard the track they did with Jill Scott (Another Day). They have been known for their breakbeat and downtempo style and you can still hear it here. But they add a seamles influx of Neo-soul to the mix. Every track is pleasantly unique but the whole album blends as a whole. It is hard to put these guys in a musical category so this album will not get heard by more people, but Neo-soul and downtempo may be the best fit. Here are my favorite tracks:
1. Morning Child_The thunderous backing orchestra for Carina Anderson is anything but downtempo, but this is head and shoulders the best track on the album and sets the amazing tone for the rest of the album.
5. Give In_A Neo Soul (or just plain Soul) beauty. Vocals by Darien Brockington and Phonte fronts some sweet insturmentation that will bob you head and touch your heart a little.
6. Play With The Changes_Starts off a little kooky with the strange pitch of the group vocals and the odd music but settles into one of of the funkiest grooves I have ever heard. If you don't play it at least more than once, u don't like music.
11. Superwoman_ An almost identical rendition of the Stevie Wonder classic sung by Terry Devos. But 4hero adds (if possible) a liite bit more soul and life to this already timeless song.

The rest are pretty good also. All and all, a great album that opened up my musical ear and my mental ear. I had doubts that was any more music out there that would get me excited, but this album ,Zero7's The Garden, John Legend's Once Again and (hopefully)
the upcoming Cinematic orchestra, have done the trick.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Vibes .......2007-05-17

I got hooked on 4Hero when I heard Two Pages, Play with the Changes musically take you a ride form Neo to Class Soul, a must have for those for have mature taste in music.

She's back. After more drama than even this unshy Big Bad Mama might have wanted, it seems as if Foxy Brown has pulled back from the abyss. Of course, on her first album in three years (since the disappointing Chyna Doll), Foxy's rhyme skills haven't gotten any better or worse--she still exhibits the focused monotone that first got her noticed in 1995 on LL Cool J's "I Shot Ya." Broken Silence can't be called a revelation, but it does showcase a less ill, more introspective Na Na. Gratuitous battle rhymes are still very much in effect, but the effort she's made to explore her recent painful experiences has resulted in some pretty compelling material. Foxy explains her position, pointedly making thinly veiled references to the many industry beefs and relationship problems that have made her name prime fodder for the rumor mills. Many of the best tunes found here, including the ragga raw "Oh Yeah," are heavy on the reggae vibe, but, quiet as it's been kept, Foxy's been exploring her dancehall roots for a while now. Broken Silence may not be the best we'll ever hear from Ms. Brown, but you can definitely call it a comeback. --Rebecca Levine

I love this album so much, I wore it out in 2001 and up until it was stolen. This will be my second time purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars The ILLEST!!! Fox we need you.......2006-10-06

I just pulled this out looking for something different to listen too,MAN I had forgot how DOPE this lp is. This is by far the best female rap album I've ever had the pleasure of owning. And one of very few albums I can listen to from start to finish. My personal favorite was "The Letter" talk about letting your fans in on what you have gone through. It doesnt get an more personal than this track. I can't even list off the dopest track because they are all hot. There is not a bad song on her. I cant wait until is graces us with a new one.

5 out of 5 stars Foxy Brown, The Illest Female in Tha Rap Game.......2006-09-25

Also tha sexiest. 4real. This album was the best out of all her albums. This is what the definition of real rap is. Tha only thing that could be changed is how she talks about Prada, Christian Diore, n other material brand names. N she talk about her na-na, but I got no problem wit dat. Id put my face in it anyday. Now just cuz I like her dnt mean Im not feelin Lil' Kim or Remy Ma. Lil' Kim CD The Naked Truth was real good, n Remy Ma CD Theres Somethin about Reamy Based on A True story was good too. But Foxy Brown is my favorite hands down. I can't wait till she drop Black Roses.

5 out of 5 stars Foxy's best yet!.......2006-09-04

What I like most about this album is Brown's return of her Trini roots on several of the dancehall inspired tracks. "Oh Yeah", "Saddest day", and "Tables wil turn" had nice dancehall chorus that made the songs pop.

Every song on this cd is worth listening too which is really rare with most cd's these days. This is Foxy's first album that can be compared to Lil Kim's Hardcore in terms of content and arrangement.

This is the BK princess I've been waiting to hear and i'm really feelin "come fly with me" featuring sizzla. i hope she continues to kick it up a notch on this next cd.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC!.......2006-08-08

This album was so slept on. Maybe lack of promotion being the cause?!? This is definetly a classic and one that I have been listening to since its release and will continue to listen to for years to come.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

    Amazon.com essential recording

This is a terrific performance of Messiah. Not only are the soloists all superb, but Trevor Pinnock completely contradicts the image of many period instrument performances as small-scale, scrappy affairs. Indeed, he invests the choruses with as much genuine Handelian pomp as Beecham at his most extravagant. The trumpets really blaze, and the timpani thunder, and everyone simply has a great time. A joyous performance, just right for the holiday season. --David Hurwitz

    Amazon.com

Trevor Pinnock meets with mixed success in this account of the Messiah with the English Concert & Choir and soloists Arleen Auger, Anne Sofie von Otter, Michael Chance, Howard Crook, and John Tomlinson, recorded and released in 1988. Its strengths are the strengths of the early-music movement in general. The size and distribution of the instrumental and vocal forces are optimal, which means that textures are clear and balances apt. Rhythms are nicely pointed, though often, in Pinnock's case, not quite well enough sprung. Tempos are well chosen; for example, "All we like sheep"--which turns out to be one of the set's best numbers--is a real bourré, and Pinnock animates it in just the right way. But the performance often seems workmanlike and unemotional, weighed down in too many instances by the humdrum work of the chorus. The alto section in particular, which is half male and half female, sings timidly and is constantly swallowing its entrances. Bass soloist John Tomlinson is a further drag on the effort. He has the right idea--that there's an Italian opera hiding behind all this biblical imagery--but his cottony sound is out of place, a misguided attempt to mimic Nicolai Ghiaurov. His usable range is less than a tenth (he croaks the low G's and F-sharps), and his diction is horrible. "Thus spake the Lord" is strangled, and when, in "The trumpet shall sound" Tomlinson gets to the words "we shall be changed," one can't help wishing that he had been changed too, right before the sessions started. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Ladies & gentleman: The Lord'n Savior, God Almighty.......2007-06-13

Handel's Messiah is my favorite piece of classical music. Of the two versions that I had I only have left this one, and it is not the best (the other had been a cheap recording whose author's name I forgot too). This version seems to lack a little enthusiasm from the voices; too melancholic. Anyway, this is the first review of any music that I write, and probably will be the last too, so I just want to leave my impression of how I feel when I hear these solemn and heavenly sounds. One feels so raised to the heavenlies... I can almost sense the presence of the Lord Almighty up yonder among the clouds, and me being carried in solemnity to meet Him. Far away are the buzzing sounds of earthly chores. The air is fresh and clean as we are raised above the valleys, and we come to meet God's elected amid the singing, stronger and stronger. Jubilant, bathed in the glorious rays of the Savior's Light, we come together and sing: Glory to God, glory to God, praise and glory for He is coming...

2 out of 5 stars So Fashionable, and So Disappointing.......2007-02-01

This would be a great 21st Century Reader's Digest version of Messiah, if such a thing existed any more. Handel did as much as he could, but really, the performers still have to do something besides posture, which, by the way, seems to me to characterize many performances these days. Fashionable, but musically deficient.

Specifically: John Tomlinson sings like he thinks he IS God, instead of singing about Him. Heavy, cumbersome, and overblown. May I add boorish?

Arleen Auger has a very sweet voice. And??

Despite the program notes insisting that certain segments of this Messiah are given to "the contralto", Anne Sofie von Otter is NOT a contralto. Not even close.

The male alto can barely sustain a legato line - why he insists upon throwing in those complicated, badly-performed embellishments I can't figure. Well, I can, but I'd really rather not say.

Wake up, choristers!! It's 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born," not "Oy, I have to go to the grocery store today."

Boy do I regret having spent almost $40 on this one. Thank goodness I have the Colin Davis to console me.

4 out of 5 stars A nice combination of period nad tradiitonal.......2006-12-17

This 1988 recording sits between the euqally English, euqally period-ifnluenced Hogwood and Garidner. Of the three, Hogwood sounds more 'authentic' because it uses boys in the chorus and singers schooled period practice. By comparison, Pinnock's soprano, Arleen Auger, and mozeeo, Von Otter, are essentially modern singers--gorgeous ones, of course, Gardiner is far more anemic in his conducting and uses a scrwny-sounding orchestra, so if that's more authentic, so be it. Of the three, Pinnock gives us more traditional music values in his emotional expression and instrumental timbres.

The competiiton is mushc stiffer now than in 1988, but Pinnock's reading has survived the test of time. He is not a genuinely inspired conductor--sadly, Messiah has become a cottage industry that excludes most big-name talents--but neither are Gardiner and Hogwood. (For sheer musicality, I tend to put my money on Andrew Parrott, Robert King, Marc Minkowski, Niklaus Harnoncourt, and Rene Jacobs.) But he's certainly good eough. The reason I haven't given five stars is that the male soloists aren't first-rate, and in particular the Wotan voice of John Tomlinson sounds cavernous in the bass arias. Add to that Pinnock's tendency toward tepidness, and what you end up with is a very good but not great performance.

5 out of 5 stars Wait! Before you buy..........2006-05-28

... This Messiah has recently been re-released at a much cheaper price. Go back and look for the DG "The Originals" release, which is being sold new for under $12.

5 out of 5 stars La mas bella y fidedigna interpretacion que se pueda obtener.......2004-12-29

5 out of 5 stars Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24

This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06

I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10

This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.

Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.

Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.

The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).

The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.

Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!

5 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20

Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.

    3 out of 5 stars English Choirs.......2002-12-18

Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite twin tone SA album.......2006-06-26

It's a treat when you discover a band has more albums before their major label record deals. After constant rotations to my cd player w/ all 3 of their Columbia albums, I searched amazon.com to see if there would maybe be a new album coming out. At the time, I came across a plethora of albums from their twin tone and a&m days. My first noncolumbia album was Made to Be Broken which I found used at a record store. I now own every album and will soon get Silver Lining this year!

MTBB starts w/ the only track on their greatest hits album "Tied to the Tracks." In my opinion it isn't the best on this album, but still has a great uptempo beat to it w/ that classic Dave scream.

"Ship of Fools" could be a ballad if slowed down, but I don't think the boys were quite ready for that, so instead they create an equally great tune w/ the message of the album I think "brokeness." I think the meaning is that the ship of fools is all the girls guys try to pursue that turn out to be just another mistake.

While "Can't Go Back," is a song about not going back through time, so you eventually will just waste time. It's just a great lesson about how time effects ones life w/ past experiences played by a great tune.

I think "Another World, Another Day" is basically the introduction to the rest of the album as it leads in hypnotic 2 minute festival of rock.

The title track has a quarky country upbeat aura to it which displays an almost rebellious side to Dave w/ the lyrics. "The rules were made to broken" chorus might attribute to that theory.

A good storytelling song that Dave perfects is in "Never Really Been." More or less telling us that what the future might be, if there was ambition.

"Whoa" is really just a nice scream fest saying well...um whoaaa

I'd say the closest song to the new sound later to follow soul asylum is "New Feelings" it sort of leaves that punk/raw feel, and just is a plain out rock song. Kinda short though.

I'm not sure what "Growing Pain" is really saying. Perhaps Dave is angry about something and needs to let out his frustration.

My favorite tune is "Long Way Home." Although rather a short list of lyrics, they are very meaningful. You get so far with something and realize it wasn't worth the time in the first place to do it, so then you have to go back home and start somewhere new.

Another 2 minute punk fest lies in "Lone Rider." More lyrics than "Whoa," and not as extreme, but rocks out.

The longest song, yes folks at 3min and 34 seconds is "Ain't That Tough" which has a great guitar beat, and good lyrics as well. Not as edgy or rough.

I'd put "Don't It (MYTSS)" before "Aint' That Tough" for the last song, but honestly this might seem out of place for this album, but nonetheless it still isn't bad.

Most devout fans should pick up this album, and most fans of the Columbia days should not, unless you do want to explore their roots such as I. What makes MTBB so great is that there is isn't just punk or just rock or just ballads. In fact there is a little bit of everything. There isn't exactly a "Runaway Train" type song on here seeing how most are under 3minutes and the album just being over 30 minutes or so. What's good is that you can put it on repeat and never get too extremely bored b/c each song is uniquely different. If you can get by some of Dave's screaming and catch all the lyrics some are simply mindblowing yet simple. A great album for 1986.

    3 out of 5 stars Rough 'n' rowdy...but is it ready?.......2004-04-10

By all definitions, Made to Be Broken is an indie album. It's short, it's loud, and sounds like it was recorded in a basement or garage.

But according to the band, Bob Mould was a valuable mentor to Soul Asylum while recording their first two albums, even if they did end up sounding like Husker Du. Soul Asylum was essentially a live act that tried to put their sound down onto tape. And even with Bob's studio experience, you just can't put a round peg in a square hole.

A majority of the songs are good, including Can't Go Back, Tied to the Tracks, and Whoah! But New Feelings and Lone Rider have only their attitude to stand on, and they almost don't hold up. Most of the guitar riffs border on overachievement and David Pirner is singing as if the world is coming to an end tomorrow and he won't have to worry about his vocal chords then.

So all things considered, Made to Be Broken's swaggering big sheet of noise is just one tiny step above Say What You Will, but a few notches short of While You Were Out and Hang Time. Only then would Soul Asylum learn how to work in a studio.

5 out of 5 stars That stuff is hard.......2004-02-08

I just remember an article in Spin where they talked about a show during the Grave Dancers union tour when a fan made a screaming request for "tied to the tracks." All Dan said (as they instead began another of the weak poppy songs of their later period) was "that stuff is hard."

I was in a band in the mid to late 80's and I could barely focus on playing anything other than songs from MTBB and Hang time. These were unique albums in a way that the derivative post grave dancers' stuff cold never be.

And live they were even better!

R Williams from SF, CA has got it perfect...the decline of SA wasn't overnight and there were moments in each of the later albums (I tried for a long time to let them grow on me but couldn't get past the sugary sweet bit).

This one is from a time when they mattered!

    5 out of 5 stars classic album.......2002-12-27

I see no negative reviews left here (they must have been removed), and that is exactly as it should be. If you weren't lucky enough to see Soul Asylum before the post-Hang Time descent, you can still get a flavor for the fun, clever, energetic and thoughtful composition packed into every song if you listen to this album.
Later fans may have trouble with older SA albums such as this, but this and While You Were Out capture a special time in Minneapolis and indie music that "college music"-oriented fans would no doubt appreciate. These are must-haves for any broad-range music collection.
Also, as a very enthusiastic fan of older SA, I find some redeeming aspects to ...And the Horse they Rode in On (some songs vaguely reminiscent of the 2 albums mentioned here) and even a few songs on Grave Dancer's Union, but after that, forget it. It was a slow, but steady descent, but MTBB is raw, fun, young, and inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars The "Critic's Review" is WAY OFF!.......2000-06-17

This whole album captures the blazing spirit of youthful energy Soul Asylum radiated like crazy during the mid-80's. Husker Du was the spearhead of a movement to inject overwhelming, unpretentious soul and emotion into melodic pop. It's bands like Husker Du and early Soul Asylum that made bands like Nirvana possible, both musically in terms of outright influence and economically in terms of creating a fan base for the marketing people to capitalize on.

Mould and Pirner may have been the original screaming but melodic pop punk frontmen, precursors to Cobaine. This album captures that totally, with sometimes mindblowing songwriting such as in "Tied to the Tracks" and "You Can't Go Back".

    5 out of 5 stars 4-Hero's Superb Soul/Broken-Beat/Nu-Jazz Album gets Reissued.......2007-01-22

Following up the universally impressive & ambitious Breakbeat / Electronica "Two Pages" that was released in 1998 and became something of a underground classic, was never going to be easy proposition. And for the 2001 follow-up, rather than retread the breakbeat patterns of the last album, in a climate where musical genres has shifted focus, they have instead (in theory) built an album of Nu-Jazz / Broken Beat experiments, with a impressive collection of vocalists to bring these tracks to life.

For those worried that this emphasis on vocalists meant, that there wasn't going to be the sublime instrumentals that 4-Hero do so well, need not worry. because tracks such as the skittering and gracefully freewheeling efforts such as "Conceptions", "Something Nothing" & " "Eight" retain that reliably earthy & elaborate organic sound that 4-Hero are applauded for. But it must be said that as excellent as these tracks are, the vocal collaborations are the highlights here....

"Time", featuring "Ursula Rucker" plays to the strengths of what she does best, and that's to put spoken word & socially aware wordplay to the backing of minimal jazz arrangements. Uncompromising, intense and Cerebral. It's heady music for sure, and is as intense as hell. But props to 4-hero, for not being tempted into making track resembling aural wallpaper, with inane diagloue planted over the top.

"Another Day" sees the music move subtly from the more moodily constructed beats of "Time" into something more elegant & smooth Nu-Soul referencing. The on-board vocalist for this remarkable effort is "Jill Scott", and only her truly remarkable vocal (and it is remarkable) could make a song with the mundane subject matter of being 'too tired to get up and go to work' sound as soaring and passionate as a classic old-skool soul....in a word Marvellous.

The Broken beat sound get's an introduction here, in the form of "Hold it Down", and it's one of the most upbeat tracks on offer here, and with some excellent drum programming and percussive breakbeat experiments with a clear nod to Jazz-fusion with its sampled soul chorus, which makes up the backbone of the vocal here. Its similar in style, to some of the more recognised artists in the broken Beat genre ("New Sector Movements (NSM)", "Two Banks of Four"), and actually remains one of my favourite tracks on this album, due to its groove and immediacy.

Taking a cue from the beat Poetry of 'Gil Scott-heron', with one eye on the uncomprimising, engaging songwriting skills that depict the gradually declining social environment, self-Conscious, incisive, confrontational lyrics, mixed with stirring, rousing contemporary production heavily influenced by Jazz. This (like 'Ursula Rucker's' effort), brings some heavyweight substance to the tracklisting, in amongst all the beautifully string arrangements & instrumentals that comprise this album. It manages to just pip Ursula's effort, due to being slightly more direct and articulate, and the more immediately thought-provoking of the two (although musically, Ursula has the edge), irrespective of that, this is stirring stuff.

For the last half of the album, where usually, in these sorts of albums, it tends to lag. 4-Hero have wisely tightened their belts and put some strong tracks for the last half. Apart from a couple of gorgeous lengthy instrumentals in the form of "Eight" & "2-BS-74638", but the reworking of "Minnie Riperton's - Les Fleur" is easily one of the best singles that 4-Hero have ever created, all heavy sensual string arrangements, thrilling instruments performances, welded together with euphoric soaring vocal choruses with a nod to classic Rythm & Soul, it's a heart-jerking moment for sure, and is definitely one the undisputed hightlights of the album.

But, The tricky question is.....'Should you buy it??'

Well....if you're a 4-hero fan, and have at least 2 of their albums, then this is a must, as it's the band shifting direction yet again (bear in mind, they started as a 'Jungle/Drum n Bass' act in the early 90's, then moved into the more melodic/ jazz-fusion end of breakbeat in the late 90's), now find themselves, positioned to embrace the more lucrative 'Nu-Jazz' / 'Broken Beat' / Jazz-House genre that an artist like "Jazzanova" inhibit. So those hoping for some of the more Drum/beat orientated tracks from the "Two Pages" album may well be disappointed (or even worse, dismiss this album). And whilst I'm using "Two Pages" as a reference, This album may lack the diversity of "Two Pages", with fewer immediately obvious standout tracks, such as "Star Chasers", "Spirits in Transit" & "We Who Are Not as Others" & "In the Shadows", to match the sprawling masterpiece that is "Two Pages". But "Creating patterns" is more tightly focused and less indulgent than the previous album, with each track featured here, standing admirably in its own right, and with some tracks natural progressions from the last album, and less Dense & concentrated a listening experience. Is it better than "Two Pages"........well, its a very close call. And I'd have to say that "Two pages" nudges ahead of "Creating Patterns" for being a (ever so slightly) more memorable album. And so I suggest if your new to 4-Hero, start with that first, and then make this tremendous album your next purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Old Fashioned Sincerity.......2006-12-30

This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst recordings ever made.......2006-05-10

This is only my second one star review. And I am rather generous with stars. But this recording is just horrible, especially considering that all of the participants are legendary musicians. First of all, this is extremely old fashioned Handel. The textures are way too heavy for music of the baroque. But worst of all, the performance just sits there like mud on your tires that won't come off. Yes, the price is very low, but whatever you do, do not buy this recording.

    2 out of 5 stars Pete's Dad.......2005-12-11

I have had a CD of the London Philharmonic version of the Messiah conducted by Fredrick Jackson for several years and enjoyed listening to it. However, the quality of the recording leaves something to be desired.
