2 out of 5 stars Forget about home taping - over production is killing music.......2007-05-12

Very overproduced and slick. The JJ Barnes stuff sounds nothing like his earlier Motown stuff which had a lot of feeling and warm, soulful production. These songs have a very early 70s sound and vibe for the most part even though they're from the late 60s. I'd suggest listening to samples before you buy

5 out of 5 stars Heavy, Heavy Detroit Soul.......2006-03-23

I can't say enough in praise of this album. I bought it for J.J. Barnes' "Sweet Sherry" which is terrific, with a great creeping organ accompaniment. But Steve Mancha is the real revelation - the urgency of "I Don't Want to Lose You," the fabulous pay-off line of "You'll Hate Yourself In the Morning (If You Let Me Go)".

The material here is notable for holding a musical space between Motown and southern "deep" soul. It's rootsier than the former, sweeter than the latter.

Taste is individual, so check the sound files - but this is my favorite album at the moment (and I have quite a few).

4 out of 5 stars Motor City Soul.......2005-12-29

I brought this cd for just one song. Steve Mancha's "I Don't Wanna Lose You". I liked that more than his hit "Don't Make Me A Story Teller". I wore that 45 out. I lost it and I have seen it on Ebay but I will not pay a lot of money for that single, so I figured if I get this CD it is a invenstment. I like the songs on here because of that Detroit sound. Even though Darrel Banks "Open The Door To Your Heart" is not on here, it's worthy buying. If you just love to collect R&B (Rare) get this. It's pretty good, and you won't be mad that you did. I do remember back in the 60's where I thought JJ Jackson was Marvin Gaye.

5 out of 5 stars 3 of the finest soul musicians that hardly anyone knows.......2002-08-17

Darrell Banks hit the Top 40 once with the classic "Open The Door To Your Heart", and J. J. Barnes had minor success with "Now That I Got You Back" and a few others, and Steve Mancha's "Don't Make Me A Storyteller" was an r & b success. All three artists are great examples of pure late-sixties soul.
Although Banks' big hit is not here [it was recorded for a different label], the 25 tracks represented would please a novice soul collector as well as a more advanced one.
Recommended without reservation !!

      Product Description

The voluminous atmosphere conjured up by Michigans Ganon is a churning, bubbling brew of alluring psychedelic doom. Embark on a mind-numbing journey through the dark-side of human imagination culminating in a lucid, voyeuristic vision of the final, solemn collapse. Incessantly swelling, molding, flowing, and erupting their blustering trudge swirls and melts together into a cacophonic, dreamy placidity barely breathing on the edge of the sublime before descending back into the chaos of insanity. Beneath their intertwining and dense textures of sound there resides a certain, tranquil moxie--creating a blissfully wounded ambience throughout the journey. The essence is a warmly inviting, yet aurally enveloping expedition immersing one further and further inward to bear witness to the calm versus the storm.

4 out of 5 stars Blissed out Consciousness.......2006-01-12

Here's the thing, most music breaks down into little fragmented particles, individual compenents.... parts of orchestra's and instruments that sustain one another to creat the whole - they in and of themselves in each song are a whole-

But with this CD' you need to absord the consciouness of the CD, study it like an entire body of work, the entire gallery instead of one art piece. Such that one song - and too one CD - do not accurately represent the journey that you embark.

There are two divisions. Before Sunset, And Before Dawn. Each category represent each CD.

Enjoy these CDs'. It isn't Chris COCO New Wave or Mellow Yellow but its still very good,

admittidly its very uneven at times, and such is the case with many Ministry of sound compilations but nonetheless, it is what it is, and what it is - is pure joy and an authentic picture of the Ibiza blissed out sunsets.

        With Love,

        Stefano

4 out of 5 stars lots of familiar (yet mid-90's band/group) faces on this one.......2005-06-02

        Positive point(s):
        1. nice to have certain songs that go well/compliment one another such as "spritual high" (c.hynde-state of independence)-"only love can break your heart" (st. etienne)-"no ordinary day" (chicane)-"we are the musicmakers"(aphex twin)...then, of course, add all-time favorites such as the orb's "little fluffy clouds" and inner city's "good life" oh, and "papua new guinea" from FSOL (think back to early nineties folks, c'mon i know you still like the stuff of this time like i do!)
well, for CD one, mid-way through, it's really just a great string of songs together.
        2. i'm too lazy to mix and make my own from home with same songs which i already have in my collection & burn cd to arrange like this one has done so...
        3. may '05 purchase @ tower clearance (2CD set) for $14 NEW!
definitely worth the money for me

        Negative Point(s):
        1. Not particularly mixed well. not sure who handled the mix at Ibiza sunset.
        2. which cd is which? it's easy to get confused - just note, this is 'very best baeleric classics' version - with so many Ministry of Sound Chillout Sessions from Ibiza

        There you have it. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Seventies soul classics.......2005-03-30

Two very different groups called the Spinners were formed in the fifties - an American R+B group and a British folk group. Neither group disputed the other's use of the name as has sometimes happened in other cases. When the need arose, the American group became identified in Britain by adding a prefix. Originally known in Britain as the Motown Spinners, they became the Detroit Spinners after leaving Motown for Atlantic. To avoid confusing myself and other Brits, I'll call them the (Detroit) Spinners. When I review music by the folk group, I'll call them the (British) Spinners to avoid confusing my American friends.

Despite being formed in the fifties and signing to Motown in the early sixties, the (Detroit) Spinners struggled to make an impact although they eventually had a British and American top twenty hit with It's a shame (written by Stevie Wonder). Their Motown music, including that track, is available elsewhere (and definitely worth a listen). This compilation focuses on their commercially successful years after they left Motown.

During their time with Atlantic, the (Detroit) Spinners had three different lead singers, these being Bobby Smith, Philip Wynne and John Edwards. In the early eighties, further line-up changes took their toll and the group faded into obscurity. Before that happened, they left a legacy of wonderful soul music.

Their classic hits include I'll be around (which provided them with a great start to their Atlantic career in America), Could it be I'm falling in love (which consolidated their American success and came close to giving them a UK top ten hit), Ghetto child (another huge American success and their first UK top ten hit), Then came you (with Dionne Warwick - an American number one hit but only a minor UK hit), The rubber band man (which returned them to the UK top twenty), Working my way back to you / Forgive me girl (the first part of this medley is a cover of a Four Seasons song - the single gave them a UK number one hit and an American number two hit) and Cupid / I've loved you for a long time (a British and American top ten hit that marked the end of their glory years in both countries).

If you enjoy seventies soul music, the (Detroit) Spinners are definitely worth a listen. This compilation includes all their essential Atlantic hits. If you enjoy it as much as I think you will, you may also like to investigate their Motown recordings.

This sound was born in Detroit, could only be born in Detroit. As the Story goes, in a lil' Jazz club downtown after hours... a few drinks and clouds hangin' in the air... Lady Blues was feeling the Soul from Motown, so she Hip-Hopped up on Motown's lap, Rocked back and forth and got the Funk on. Meanwhile, Folk wondered in off the streets with crazy hair and dark shades and wrote the story down. On that night, Sista Otis and the Wholly Rollers were conceived. TRACKS: 1. I Didn't Do It 2. I've been collecting Detroit rock and soul, so purchasing this CD was automatic. I didn't know a song or group on the album, but this disc has taken up home in my player. It's Motown meets Philly Soul. Every song has a memorable, sing-a-long hook. It's the best CD I've purchased this year.

5 out of 5 stars The funk nobody even talk about.......2002-05-20

This is some rare uncut lost funk from the westbound label best known for funkadelic and ohio players. This whole compilation kicks booty up and down if you're an old school funkfan buy this you love it.

          5 out of 5 stars Sweet Soulful and Wicked ! ! !.......2000-12-17

When I think Westbound, the first thing that comes to mind is that swirly psychadelic blue and yellow label and that wild logo of theirs, and all the tripped out funk bands that came out on that label like The Counts, The Ohio Players, Junie and Funkadelic.

This compilation proves that just as there was more to Detroit than The Supremes and Motown, there was more to Westbound than those hard driving acid funk groups (Though if you dig that, check out the Westbound Gettin' It Off Compilation !)

What you hear on this fantastic CD is the sweet soul side of Westbound... Fans of those early '70s vocal groups like The O'Jays, The Moments, The Whispers, The New Birth will definitely dig these cuts from deep down in the vaults and like a lot of those groups no matter how mellow the grooves are, they'll always have a nice rhythmic edge to them (just don't let me catch you standing in front of the bedroom mirror practising your moves and steps.)

There are a few extra points by the way that make this CD an extra bang for the buck - - plenty of unissued sides (Detroit Emerald fans take note ! ! ! ), a very different side of The Counts, or atleast one more similar to the sound they'd revive on their Awareness cuts (check out the mega-funky What's Up Front That Counts CD !) the original version of the tune made famous by Ripple and a few hip hop groups "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky - - finally this CD has over 25 tracks... and all of 'em are good.

Hmmmmmm... somewhat off the subject... wonder if Amazon has any Carl Douglas reissues ? (This came to mind while listening to the flute part on the Fantastic Four's I'm Falling In Love.)
