Aimed exclusively at parents of newborns, this transforms a clutch of boomer standards--"Baby I Love You," "Be My Baby," "In My Room," "Angel Baby," "Devoted to You," even "We Will Rock You"--into downy, light-as-air lullabies. The creative nadir of Ronstadt's career, sure, but just the ticket for anyone making goo-goo eyes at junior while reaching for the Pampers. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Find.......2007-05-23

This is my favorite baby gift to give. Beautiful remakes of well-known songs - very soothing for infants and small children and it is actually enjoyable for the parents as well. I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars I was verklempt.......2007-04-10

The first time I heard this CD I listened to the entire album with a big lump in my throat. It is amazing that no one had used popular rock songs as lullabys for a complete CD before. There is a tenderness and warmth in this collection that is not found in most baby music. If you care for Linda Ronstadt at all these songs will move you beyond whatever you expected. I only wish she would now do another set in Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars We STILL love this music.......2006-11-26

I bought this when my 10 year old was a baby. It is calm, soothing and more fun to rock a baby to than any other "lullaby" CD. My youngest (she's 8) still listens to it every night. I enjoy giving it as a baby gift for new "rockers" to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great "Baby Rockin' Tunes".......2006-11-10

I have this CD for myself and love it. It occurred to me that it would be a great CD to rock babies to....great songs from the 60's, but Linda sings them softly and beautifully. So, I decided to give this CD as parents-to-be gifts. The rocker will love the tunes as much as the rockee.

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Lullaby CD .......2006-11-03

This is my all time favorite lullaby music. The music is calm and flows from song to song. My two children listened to this constantly from the time they were born and still at ages three and five listen on ocassion to relax. These are familiar songs in a lullaby format that I enjoy. I give this as a gift to all new parents I know. This is a must for the nursery and the only lullaby music you will need.

Album Description

Lullabies for Sleepy Eyes is a diverse 16-song collection offering folk-renditions of lullabies from Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Yiddish, French and Australian traditions, among others. Although the lullabies are aimed for children ages one to five, the familiar, soft melodies work wonderfully for infants as well. With this album, Vocalist Susie Tallman provides a distinct sound much different from other children's albums; Lullabies for Sleepy Eyes is not tinny and sparkly but warm, clear, and textured gentle music that will link parent and child in the extraordinary way that only a lullaby can.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Baby Bedtime helper ever.......2006-11-06

This cd is beautiful and includes unique versions of some favorite lullabies as well as some I'd never heard before. Susie Tallman's voice is enchanting, and the songs are not in any way annoying if the melodies get caught up in your head (some other cds are relentless!). I play the music while my baby and I wind down before she goes to bed and it works like a charm!

5 out of 5 stars Beatiful Classic.......2005-10-20

Lullabies for Sleepy Eyes is another one of Susie Tallman's classics. Her beautiful voice brings out the best in these classic lullaby tunes. Whether you are trying to put your child to sleep in the car or at home, it is a must. This is a staple when you have small children. Sit back, relax and enjoy...

5 out of 5 stars Something different for your lullaby collection..........2005-08-29

This is a GREAT Cd to add to your lullaby collection - the arrangements & songs are not what you find on your typical lullaby cds, and that is refreshing especially when you have an extensive lullaby collection such as I do! My husband is Irish, and there are several Irish songs on the CD that we love. My baby calms right down when I rock her to this cd - I got it as a gift and think it would be a great gift for other mothers/babies. Susie did an excellent job - highly recommend!! Another one you'd probably like is Susie's "Lullaby Themes for Sleepy Dreams."

2 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds and voice but annoyed me.......2005-06-12

Purchased at recommendation of a parenting magazine and the 2 reviews on line. I can see how the music and the singer's voice would be soothing for a baby, but frankly, her voice annoyed me. Was a little too syrupy and sing-songy for me. I'd fall asleep easier to some old Enya or just instrumental versions of this, I think. Just my personal opinion.

5 out of 5 stars What a fabulous find!.......2005-06-02

I recently came across this CD in a boutique baby shop and immediately decided to buy it because I'm always looking for more lullaby albums. I'm so glad I happened to find this! I've always loved "Suo Gan", so I was absolutely enchanted to hear Susie Tallman's version. I always want to hang out in my daughter's room after she's asleep just to listen to this. The song versions are slightly different from the original arrangements, but are absolutely soothing.

Ray Charles's decision to cut an album of duets with then-rising jazz singer Betty Carter defines the phrase "unerring instinct." Charles responds to Carter's gorgeous voice and compelling melodic changes with some of his softest singing; you might say that this already masterful conduit of emotion got in touch with his feminine side on this 1961 date. The opening and closing cuts of the girls'-names theme album Dedicated to You, another '61 LP that fills out this 78-minute disc, demonstrate Brother Ray's touch for transforming unlikely material into expressions of his own funky essence. His amused big-band celebrations of "Hardhearted Hannah" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" sit alongside sublime portraits of "Stella by Starlight" and "Ruby" on an underappreciated set that's a perfect match for the Charles-Carter sides. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Jazzy Music.......2007-01-09

I love Ray Charles and Betty Carter individually. Listening to them sing together is nothing short of amazing. I love this CD and would highly recommend its purchase by any and everyone loving music.
My favorite on this CD is Baby It's Cold Outside. Great to listen to any time of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Charles and Carter.......2006-07-13

Although a big Charles fan, I must admit that Betty Carter works on a different level, showing the difference between the genious of popular music and a great jazz-vocalist. However, this doesn't mean one should put Charles down; as he shows in the second half of the CD (without Carter), he is a brilliant singer, with a great sense for rhythm and emotion. Recomended both for jazz audience (thanks to Carter) and for Charles' fans.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2005-11-23

I think most people decided to check out this CD after they watched the movie "Ray". I however, was looking for the song "Ev'ry Time we say Goodbye" and found it on this album. It is the title track and is beautiful! As I continued listening to the CD, I found that the music of Ray Charles and Betty Carter really tickled my fancy. Not all the songs are in the same genre of "Ev'ry Time we say Goodbye", but they all have a certain something to them which I found really good. This music is easy to listen to and is truly a pleasure on the ear.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2005-06-07

I wore out my vinyl, but taped it first, then broke the tape over-playing it. This side never gets tired. Kowabunga. Buy it for your best friend.

for a few years i thought this cd was out of print...i cherished my one copy treating it like the precious jewel it is... my first trip to amazon.. and viola there it is.. bought many copies to give as wedding gifts. This album will play over and over and never get dull or dusty.. it is rock solid.

5 out of 5 stars Great for little ones.......2007-03-30

My two month old loves this music whenever I put it on she calms down.Very soothing and relaxing for mom too.

5 out of 5 stars Leave the singing to Susie.......2006-08-29

Since Susie Tallman's Classic Nursery Rhymes has been such a hit with every little one I know, I got this CD. It's simply beautiful and a great mix with the one I have. This CD is for when you're all sung out, it's quiet time and the lights are dimmed. My voice is so awful and hers is so amazing, singing along wasn't really an option, but at least I could finally learn all the words since they're conveniently included in the packaging.

I definitely recommend Lullaby Themes - save your voice and let Susie put your kid to sleep!

4 out of 5 stars Lullaby Themes for Sleepy Dreams.......2006-03-05

I got this CD for my kids who are 2 1/2 and 4 1/2. They wanted to listen to only a couple of songs in this album. So I would have to play only those songs in the repeat mode. Whether they enjoyed all the songs or not, it did help them to go to sleep without me being around.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!!.......2005-12-27

Miss Tallman has great passion for her work and she has produced a collection of soothing titles for little ones!

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD.......2005-12-18

We've been listening to this CD every night since our daughter was about 8 weeks old (she's now ten months). It's just beautiful, and as other people have posted, some of the songs have brought me to tears at times. It's a peaceful compilation of beautiful lullaby tunes.

It's moments like these when you wish you hadn't used words like "spine-tingling," "passionate," and "gritty" in other reviews. By the time of these 1996 duo sessions, Staples's voice had gotten grainier and earthier than it was during her glory days, and is all the more expressive and heart wrenching because of it. Meanwhile, Peterson's work on Hammond B-3 and piano is nothing short of astonishing--urgent, soulful, and pulsating--yet it never overwhelms Staples's burning pleas. Billed as a tribute to Mahalia Jackson, these 13 familiar cuts are soaked to the bone with blues inflections that deftly illustrate the intimate relationship between blues and spirituals. The pair's inspirational sermon will make believers out of even the most resolute cynics. --Marc Greilsamer

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two Unlikely Collaborators Make Heavenly Music.......2007-03-12

Lucky Peterson plays blues. Mavis Staples sings gospel. One might wonder if this Saturday night/Sunday morning combo could create a lasting tribute to gospel great Mahalia Jackson. But it works, mainly because the two stick to a formula Jackson favored: Vocals accompanied only by an organ or piano.

Staples was deeply influenced by Jackson's music and friendship. And it was her idea to record a tribute using the accompaniment Jackson prefered. But she had trouble finding an organ player with the reputation that would interest a record company. Peterson had this reputation. In the mid-1990s, he was a red-hot blues player for Verve Records, getting lots of radio play, and gigs at major festivals. He was famous for his guitar playing, but equally proficient on the Hammond B-3 organ. Verve promised to release the Jackson tribute if Staples agreed to work with Peterson. The results are stunning, especially considering the two never worked together before.

Staples' voice is characterized by a deep rasp that adds an emotional edge to Jackson favorites like "Wade in the Water" and "Were You There?" Peterson, for his part, has the chops befitting a bandleader. But on this album, he gladly, almost worshipfully, steps into the supporting role. On every track, Peterson punctuates Staples' singing, and fills her pauses with appropriate chords. Never once does he upstage her, or play ahead of her.

The best example of this collaboration is "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." Here, Staples' voice soars to the heavens - praising God, Jackson, praising music itself - before descending to a gravelly bottom, filled with soul and solemnity. Peterson, again, follows wherever Staples goes. Like the perfect wingman, his eye remains on his leader, hands reacting quickly and competently to stay in formation.

"Spirituals & Gospel" works because of the special magic between Staples, a leader in sacred music, and Peterson, a star of the secular world. Who knew that great gospel needed a sinner to help it succeed? The Lord works in mysterious ways....

5 out of 5 stars Two national Gospel treasures hits an A!.......2007-01-18

In the world of recorded music, many highly talented female vocalist have paid their tribute to musical mentors like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin and Mahalia Jackson. My allegation is that most vocalists fail in their attempt. Why? You can't do it better than your mentor, you need to do it differently! To make an album dedicated to Mahalia Jackson, singing / playing her most beloved gospel and spiritual repertoire tunes, you need a portion of great musicality and a lots of guts! The soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples has these qualities. And she does it differently, in her own way together with only pianist / organist Lucky Peterson. Peterson, also well known for his great blues albums playing guitar, shows mean gospel skills on the Hammond B-3 organ , which he focused most of his musical energy on after lessons from Bill Doggett and the legendary Jimmy Smith. Not many surprises on the selections of tunes on this CD, the dearly beloved ones are all here - Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen, He's Got The Whole World In His Hands, Wade In The Water, I'll Fly Away From Home, Gown Down Moses to name a few. Peterson's organ playing must be considered as a learning book for gospel organ players and enthusiasts - his sensitive use of organ dynamics as an accompanist and soloist, drawbar registrations, and bass lines make the duo sound like at full band. Peterson's change to acoustic piano an a few tunes only broadens the musical expression of this great CD. Staples mature darkened soul voice and chops adds great edge to her gospel interpretations. Her dubbed solo version of "Stand By Me" says it all. Well done Staples / Peterson - A for overall performance!

5 out of 5 stars A Master Class in Gospel Music.......2005-01-19

Mavis Staples' husky voice is a national treasure. I remember hearing her in the pre-renovation Carnegie Hall in the 1970s with The Staples (opening for Ray Charles). One of the great voices of the century. Her gospel singing with her family group in the 1960s is less well remembered than her secular singing in the 1970s, but it is the root of everything she's ever done.

This record--a duet with pianist/organist Lucky Peterson--features a collection of songs associated with Mahalia Jackson. That means there's plenty of traditional material, like "He's Got the Whole World In His Hand" and "Down By the Riverside." But it also means that there is plenty of mid-century gospel blues including Thomas A. Dorsey's anthem "Precious Lord," as well as gospel standards lik "Stand By Me," "Steal Away," and "If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again."

The effect of this striped down presentation of beautifully recorded repertoire and performance is of a master class in gospel song. You can't go wrong.

    5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2001-07-18

"Godba" (slovenian expression for music) from heaven. No mistakes (OK, Lucky could be a little less nervous sometimes) Highly recommended to all religious and atheist listeners. Mavis rules!

3 out of 5 stars Not really a Lucky Peterson album at all!.......2001-04-18

This album is sub titled "Dedicated to Mahalia Jackson". At the time of recording Mahalia Jackson was badly served by reissues, which is certainly not the case at the time of writing. It would therefore have been appropriate for producer John Synder to approach Mavis Staples with a view to recording some of Miss Jackson's recordings in her own style. The awe in which Mavis Staples held Mahalia Jackson is evident from the sleeve notes - as is the strength with which Pops Staples held the family together. Lucky Peterson gets to play Hammond B3 and piano as a background to the tracks that were recorded. He does so largely without any frills or blue notes, and strictly to back up "the voice". This is, therefore, a Mavis Staples album. The tracks are all recorded without processing on the voice, except for the very sparing use of double tracking to provide call and response. It's very well done, but is really rather superfluous in view of the ready availability of the originals.

5 out of 5 stars Rosemary Clooney - Dedicated to Nelson.......2007-07-18

All the songs that sung by her in this album are the most my favorite, plus the arrangement is just match. I couldn't describe by words...just feel relax and forget all the problems when listen it <*> _ <*>

    5 out of 5 stars Rosie RULES!!!.......2003-11-25

I've probably listened to this CD about 500 times at least. (Ok- I admit I'm obsessed with her wonderful voice and interpretations!) It's this CD that turned me on to Rosie. I now have about a dozen of her CDs. In her autobiography, she talks about her deep love for her good friend, Nelson Riddle, and it shows in every song she sings on this collection. I think his arrangements are just terrific.

I prefer her mature voice. It is filled with richness and emotion and I'm convinced she has lived every single song she sings. In a crowd of luscious voices from her era, Rosie stands out as my all-time favorite. May her legacy live on forever.

3 out of 5 stars This is Old Rosie.......2002-04-02

I love Rosie but her voice now is not the voice of the young Rosie. I would like to know if there are any tapes or CDs of the original recordings. Can you help me?

5 out of 5 stars "girl singer rides again".......2000-11-30

Concord Jazz presents an amazing piece of entertainment, arrangements used on this recording were originally created by Nelson Riddle for Rosie's classic mid '50s television series - "The Rosemary Clooney Show". Newly transcribed and adapted by John Oddo, Eddie Karam and David Berger, and rerecorded with the benefits of technology undreamed of in the 1950s, she restores to us 16 "lost" orchestrations by the master arranger of the '50s, the man whose music is as much a part of that decade as any singer or songwriter you can name - "DEDICATED TO NELSON".

Rosie represents Nelson's vintage charts for the first time in a generation, nostalgic of a bygone era shared in a musical past with astute pleasure. Superb arrangements providing passages for instrumental solos, basic harmony with voicings, counter-melodies and Nelson's trademark rhythmic ostinatos. Clooney is in her element, surrounded by a top-notch-studio orchestra, articulation of the difficult melody line - "DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO MISS NEW ORLEANS?", is nothing less than "pure interpretation" by Rosie...to perfection.

Concord Jazz takes us back to those days of the successfully syndicated variety show in the 1956-57 television season - "THE ROSEMARY CLOONEY SHOW"...a pure pleasure, again!

    Total Time: 51:47 on 16 Tracks...Concord Jazz CCD-4685...(1996)

5 out of 5 stars A Treasured CD of Timless Classics by a Timeless Artist.......2000-07-17

This dedication to one of the grand masters, Nelson Riddle, by one of the most talented interpreters of song is a must buy! Rosie is in top form on this CD, from lush ballads to swingin' arrangements.

More Playgroup Favorites piles on a second batch of predictable songs--nothing you won't find on any preschool compilation--the main difference being that they're sandwiched between a solid five tracks of Mommy & Me-specific songs. "Shake My Hand (Hello Song)" and "Take My Hand (Goodbye Song)," call to mind snuggly together time for moms and tots across the country, and this CD capitalizes on their lovey-dovey devotion to the weekly groups that make interacting (goofing around on the floor and clapping out simple rhythms together) mandatory. Nothing wrong with that--some parents will even salute themselves for extending the enriching environment to their living room rugs. But this kind of fun, can grow formulaic fast, despite the performers' best stabs at loopiness. --Tammy La Gorce

    1 out of 5 stars Awful!.......2007-03-19

The writers have taken classic songs and added really poor quality lyrics:
    Ride ride ride your bike
    Down the busy street
    Isn't it surprising
    All the kangaroos you meet

    Awful!

The song segments are terribly edited: the moms' mouths don't sync with the soundtrack at all. The cartoon segments are cheesy and poorly animated. The belching kangaroo only adds to the nausea I get when my wife plays this video.

To be fair, my daughter really enjoys it. But she also enjoys Sesame Street and Disney stuff. Don't waste your time.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2006-03-24

My son has this one and the Playgroup Favorites, and he loves both (and has since he was an infant). The songs are catchy and not too annoying for the grown-ups. Really keeps him entertained! Highly recommend buying.

    5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC CD!.......2004-02-21

My daughter, Emily and I are having the BEST time in the car since we've been listening to "Mommy and Me, More Playgroup Favorites." Now when we get in the car, Emily immediately yells out: "MOMMY ME!" which means, crank up the tunes mom! Once the CD starts playing, Emily recites all the words to the songs, which I was very surprised to hear. The original songs like "Mommy & Me," "Shake My Hand," and "Take My Hand," written by Marty Panzer, are quickly becoming cherished favorites in our family. Panzer has also written fresh new lyrics to classics like, "If You're Happy And You Know It," " Head Shoulders Knees and Toes," and "Row Row Row Your Boat," among others. It's shocking that this wonderful CD has replaced the Wiggles as my daughter's new favorite obsession! Even my husband hums the tunes to himself when we get in the car for a family outing. Thank you for bringing such wonderful music into our lives!

Stephanie Berk, mom of Emily, 21 months

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful album for bonding with young ones!.......2004-02-20

More Playgroup Favorites is another great album to play while spending bonding time with your baby and young ones! Check out the first album- Playgroup Favorites, too! Both feature sophisticated and modern arrangements of classic childhood tunes, produced by an award-winning team, including jazz versions of well-known favorites. Both CDs are PERFECT for playgroups, playdates, parties, and at-home fun. Not only is the music sensational, but parents cherish the time they spend with their young children, and they welcome tools like these CDs to help them make the most of the experience.

This cd is completly differant from two worlds or movin melodies. It is much more ambient sounding less of the jazz guitar and much more trace. This is'nt the fastest pace cd ever (although it does have a good mix of Let U Go on it).

I love cd it was a great refreshment from two worlds and movin melodies a new sound and a new style buy this cd you will not be disapointed.

Dance music is an urban, nighttime genre, and ATB knows how to communicate that feeling in the best way. He combines a knack for memorable grooves with arrangements that set just the right mood. The minute I heard the title piece, it became my favorite dance/club track, and it still is. Check out a soundbite. If you like it, you'll like the whole thing. "Halcyon" and "I Wanna Cry" are also great.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Change of Pace.......2004-11-11

Definitely different than the first two albums but if you're a purist when it comes to trance/electronica music, you can appreciate the range ATB has to offer in his music - a great combination of progressive and melodic trance on this album.

5 out of 5 stars ATB did it !.......2004-06-29

A big fan of ATB, I always knew that one day we all will get to listen to a great music created by ATB. This album proves that he is a great music producer. I have read the reviews below, many people have written against it, and many have said that this album is not a good effort by ATB.

Of course, if you will compare this album with his (ATB's) earlier albums, you will be disappointed. Not because it's a bad album but because it is different from the earlier work by ATB.

If you forget about his earlier albums and listen to this one without expecting the typical ATB stuff, you will love it.

Listening to this album will take you thru all emotions, especially when you are listening to "I wanna cry" and "Hero".

Actually, I think it's a good decision and a great effort by ATB to create a music, which doesn't sound too repetitive. Remember... Tones from 9PM till I come?

This album is refreshing, and you can listen to it while doing anything.

4 out of 5 stars A superb effort, but nothing like his first two albums.......2003-08-16

Well, this is sort of a disappointment from "Movin' Melodies" and "Two Worlds", but it's still cool. ATB is a musical genius in the dance/house music genre. This album "Dedicated" seems a little more personal, especially since tracks 8 & 11 are dedicated to the tragic events of 9/11. Many of the songs are pleasant to listen to, and the arrangement of beats and melodies flow well. One thing I didn't understand is why he included Track 6 "Let you Go" again on this release!!! I mean it's a good tune, but let it go already (no pun intended)....
This is a good album to add to your dance music library, but if you want the best of ATB, listen to the two albums mentioned above...I can honestly say that I enjoyed every track on those.

    Album Description

About this CD (notes from the artist )

    Topanga Dreams
Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...

    Katyia's Dance
This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!

    China Lily
This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.

    Lhasa Love
I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!

    Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.

    Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

    5 out of 5 stars A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05

I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2004-01-01

Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. For more bamboo and metal flute improvisations, in this case without accompaniment, check out also Richard Warner's "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind".

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2002-07-05

I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2001-06-28

I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you want to listen and dance at the same time.......2000-08-31

This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.
