Johnny Mathis's 2006 return to the spotlight was richly deserved, not because his career needed resurrecting--he's continued touring and recording for breathless fans well into his seventh decade--but because post-boomer generations shouldn't be allowed to roam the world asking "Johnny Who?" when his name gets mentioned. Mathis is that important an artist, and this compendium of his work, best thought of as a winking glance, does an able job of demonstrating why: "Chances Are," a slice of pop brilliance set to a piano with a broken heart, has always sounded as though it's been pulled off a silver platter. The Mathis voice--rich and deep at some turns, high and fragile at others, poured gold either way--seals it in timelessness; it's a pop scholar's very definition of a classic. "Wonderful! Wonderful!" throws off the same sparks to a lesser degree--delivery-wise, it's nearly impossible not to attach the word delightful, and overall it reeks of cultural importance. The rest of these songs add up to a case study in why Mathis matters: "Misty" may be dusty, but it still melts the heart. And "When Sunny Gets Blue," with its slow, sad strings, stings with Roy Orbison-caliber potency. Two previously unreleased tracks, "So Many Stars," produced by Sergio Mendes, and "The Shadow of Your Smile," with Dave Koz and Chris Botti, shine a light on Mathis's more recent work. It holds up brilliantly (not easy, considering Mathis's clean, distinctive voice). It also accounts, probably, for this disc's closing track--Ray Charles wouldn't have recorded his late-career rendition of "Over the Rainbow" with just anybody. Johnny's BEST.......2007-05-15

I think this is the BEST Johnny Mathis collection of his greatest hits to date. I have been a fan since the early 60's and I have many albums. This, however, brings the BEST songs together collectively. I would recommend this CD if you are as big a fan as I am!!!!

It's been suggested that almost as many baby boomers were conceived to the romantic sounds of Johnny Mathis's voice as to Sinatra's--and when you consider that Johnny's Greatest Hits stayed on Billboard's Top 40 chart for 178 weeks beginning in '58 (that's more than twice as long as Dark Side of the Moon, folks!), it's easy to understand why. Sony has used this "16 Most Requested" routine on a number of their easy-listening vocalists (including Sinatra and Andy Williams), but this one is special in that it takes the cream of Mathis's Greatest Hits album and rounds it out with his 1970s take on several movie theme hits, including Love Story and Romeo & Juliet. One of the most simple pleasures one can have in this busy world we live in - the age of BlackBerrys - is to snatch some precious and quiet moments to go back in time and experience the charms of the old world through this mesmerizing and soothing music of Johnny Mathis, one of my very favorite singers of all-time.

I always enjoy listening to these sixteen most requested songs from the opener "Chances Are" to the final track "Gina." My favorites include "Misty," "It's Not For Me To Say," "Wild Is The Wind," "A Certain Smile," "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Didn't We" and "Wonderful! Wonderful," a beautiful composition by Ben Raleigh and Sherman Edwards, which Howard Garwood singled out on Liner Notes as the song that the "Mathis Formula" was born. And that formula is the mixture of his "crystal-clear diction, the intimate throb that seems to speak personally to every woman in the audience, and the almost ethereal and technically perfect use of the upper register." Amen to that! He said it perfectly. I would add that Mr. Mathis is the epitome of an exceptional singer and he delivers so well in all his recordings.

Listen to this CD if you want to escape momentarily from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In this so very busy world, who isn't guilty of putting make-up on while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of having breakfast of oatmeal with brown sugar and dried cranberries, banana and coffee while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of jotting down a list of "things-to-do-today" while driving to work in the morning? Who isn't guilty of making and receiving phone calls while driving? But the bottom line is . . . as long as there's music such as this to listen to, our busy, demanding and hectic schedules will always be bearable.

This is one of my very favorite CDs from my collection. I wholeheartedly recommend it for your listening enjoyment always and forever!

I have to say this CD is the best music purchase I have made in a long time. I have been a Mathis fan for years, but for some reason have not listened to his music for some time. After watching a PBS special a few weeks ago I was inspired to break out his music again. I ordered this CD since it had such a wonderful collection of his hits, as well as many other songs made special by Mathis magic. Truly, his voice is comparable to a fine musical instrument, with such range and feeling in every piece of music. He once again made my heart sing with the most beautiful sounds I've ever heard. It really is a must for any Mathis fan.

Excellent compilation that includes his biggest hits from the 50's, early 60's, and his hit duet with Deniece Williams. What a voice, and what a way of delivering a song. This is definitely worth the listen, with all of his hits on here the originals.

Mr. Mathis is very simply the best singer I have ever heard. I have been to his concerts and he takes my breath away. I enjoy other singers and other styles, but I have been listening to him from the very first recording I haven't found any one who is better. He is perfection.

Nice jazz sampler should appeal to most tastes in mainstream jazz since it's not too funky or free-style. What's the real kicker here is the SACD quality. Certainly not what I would call a great test cd but still good for amazing friends with the detailed sonics and tight bass lines and realistic voices in the room effects.

Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06

I'm not a jazz fan, but purchased this SACD for testing the performance of my new SACD & DVDA player. I own a lot of DVD audio discs, but this one is my first SACD.
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

With a series of terrific albums, Cassandra Wilson has established herself as one of the day's great vocalists and, in branching out from jazz into blues and folk and pop, paved the way for genre-crossing stars including Norah Jones. But the Mississippi native has rarely sounded as relaxed or winning as she does on "Thunderbird," which teams her with the stalwart O Brother Where Art Thou? producer T Bone Burnett. Recorded mostly in Los Angeles, the album is noteworthy not only for its roomy, atmospheric sound and experimental touches, but also for its improvised-in-the-studio approach. Working with innovative Burnett regulars including keyboardist (and co-producer) Keefus Ciancia, guitarist Marc Ribot, and drumming legend Jim Keltner, Wilson delivers such offbeat delights as "Going to Mexico," a dreamlike, funk-tinged tune built on a sample of "Hey Pocky A-Way" by New Orleans' Wild Tchoupitoulas. Eschewing the well-known pop tunes she usually covers, she lends her huskily seductive vocals to Jakob Dylan's wistful "Closer to You" and Burnett's dark "Strike a Match," to which she claimed co-ownership by changing the time signature and adding a lyric. The inspired contributors also include programmer and bassist Mike Elizondo (producer of Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine") and guitarist Colin Linden, who wails on a gripping extended reading of Blind Lemon Jefferson's "Easy Rider" and duets with Wilson on the cowboy classic "Red River Valley," which eloquently sums up her ability to breathe jazz meaning into anything she chooses. --Lloyd Sachs

Funky, sultry, bluesy, sexy, mellow, haunting, hypnotic, cool...this CD has it all and then some. From the opening beats of Go To Mexico to the final chords of Tarot, this is an incredibly hot disc. Wilson has certainly hooked me with her absolutely gorgeous vocals, but the music on this CD is so darn good, it doesn't make any sense. This is not your usual Cassandra and if you're looking for something different from her from a purely musical standpoint, then this is it.

In an era where woman singers are more often judged on appearance than artistic merit Cassandra Wilson (who by the way is a major babe) continues to carve her own path and does it brilliantly. I've said it before and I'll just repeat it; Cassandra Wilson is the best singer, in any style, of her generation, period.

Too Many Pop Covers.......2007-03-11

Simply, this isn't one of Cassandra's best. Her last 2-3 cd's have relied too much on pop covers of various merit which really diminishes the effectiveness of one of the most marvellous voices in jazz-blues. I have seen her live several times and she outstanding as a performer and unequalled in the jazz-blues genre, but straying so far (for a wider commercial appeal?) from her blues roots only serves to murk her vocal and musical identity. My fear is this wonderful vocalist will end up in the same situation as Etta James who abandoned her Texas blues roots for a not very convincing or engaging party rock-blues repertoire.

I really love this new album! It is different from her usual style but it's still Cassandra all the same. I love the way her smoky voice rides and intertwines with the deep base and percussions.Especially tracks like "Closer to You", "It would Be So Easy", "Poet" and "Strike a Match". You have a great introduction to her new style with "Go to Mexico" and of course her classic "bluesy" ballad styles with "Easy Rider" and "Red River Valley". My husband who had never heard of her can't get enough of this new album!
The old adage rings true...Like fine wine, she get's better with age!

A bit sad, but absolutely beautiful.......2007-06-09

Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

If Columbia Records was trying to cash in quickly with this 1958 package before heartthrob Mathis's string ran out, the joke was--happily--on them, since it ended up staying on the Billboard charts for 490 weeks. These, of course, are his earliest smashes, and for the most part, his best: the likes of "Chances Are" and "Wonderful! Wonderful!" are young people's music the way, for instance, the '50s Sinatra wasn't, and Mathis was growing up fast. He'd rarely sound quite so earnestly embracing again. --Rickey Wright

Fits The Definition Of A CD Dinosaur.......2007-08-02

I do NOT mean Johnny Mathis in the above caption. Far from it. During the halcyon days of the birth of R&R any house party worth its salt had the prerequisite Presley, Domino, Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis, and Pat Boone 45s ready to roll for pure dancing pleasure. But when it was time for ... err ... other things, the first LP to hit the turntable was always a Johnny Mathis one.

His smooth delivery and velvet tones, usually backed by the Ray Coniff or Ray Ellis orchestras, were the perfect combination to settle things down and relax.

No, the caption refers to the 10- or 12-track CD with no liner notes which hit the market back at the beginning of the CD age. They were alright back then, at least until the novelty wore off and the major labels were eventually confronted by Rhino, Ace, Eric, Collectables, Bear Family, etc. How they can continue to be available, and how anyone would fork over the amounts asked when much better compilations are available for just a few dollars more, and with copious liner notes, is beyond me.

This, and its companion CD (More Greatest Hits). like many CDs from that time, also take liberty with the term Greatest Hits, giving us three in this volume which were uncharted B-sides - When Sunny Gets Blue which backed his first hit Wonderful! Wonderful!, Warm And Tender on the other side of It's Not For Me To Say, and When I Am With You, the flip of Come To Me.

The other one includes three uncharted B-sides [Very Much In Love, You Are Everything To Me, and Let It Rain] along with one [Flame Of Love] which wasn't even the B-side of a hit. So, out of 24 selections in two CDs just 17 were actually hits. Not only that, but they left out three that were very much among his greatest hits - scoring higher than ELEVEN of those included. These are: Gina [# 2 Adult Contemporary [AC]/# 6 Billboard Hot 100 in 1962]; What Will Mary Say? [# 3 AC/# 9 Hot 100/# 21 R&B in 1963]; and Misty [# 10 R&B/# 12 Hot 100 in 1959].

Indeed, two more [Starbright - # 25 Hot 100 in 1960 and Every Step Of The Way - # 10 AC/# 30 Hot 100 in 1963] were better hits than either of You Are Beautiful [# 60 Hot 100] and Let's Love [# 44 Hot 100].

It's time to either withdraw these from the marketplace, OR combine the two in a 30-track CD with the addition of those mentioned above, and add a few pages of background notes and a discography.

Great Vintage Johnny Mathis.......2007-07-27

All the well known Johnny Mathis songs that you remember are great to hear again on this one. Even the ones that have been added that weren't 50's and 60's radio hits are good listening. Johnny Mathis is synonomous with great love song ballads of that era. Every song on this CD is just as easy to listen to today, as they were back then, but tone quality is crystal clear.

This album is more than nostalgia, and despite some sappy lyrics, (which I have to add are beautifully written), Johnny is simply fantastic. I am a classical/Flamenco/progressive rock/oldies, and not particularly a Mathis fan, and yet this recording belongs in everyones collection for those subtle times in life when we give thought to love, a woman, and the magic that seems to live in the air in such moments. The orchastrations and background vocals accent Johnny's gifted voice and create quite a unique mood. The recordings are as fresh as when first relased way back when. A time of...if there ever was such a thing...(yes, of course there was)...innocense. I also enjoy A Certain Smile, Maria, and A Time for Us.

not worth it.......2007-01-13

4 of the 12 songs on this disc are his greatest hits. the others are good productions, but not what a greatest hits collection should include.... I wanted the songs I grew up with. I got 4 of them.

Johnny's Greatest Hits - The First of The Greatest Hits Genre and Still One of The Best.......2005-10-14

Many people do not know that Johnny's Greatest Hits was the first album to be titled as such...

Johnny was scheduled to record a new album when this album was released, but was out of the country and unable to record. His manager decided to put together a compilation of previously released songs from his prior albums and release them as a collection in place of an album of new material from Johnny. They searched for an appropriate title for the album and ended up simply calling it Johnny's Greatest Hits.

To say the album did extremely well upon its initial release is an understatement in every way. This album spent 490 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. That is the equivalent of 9 1/2 years! No other Greatest Hits album has come close.

Due to the enormous success of this album, every other artist capitalized on the idea and now everyone eventually releases a Greatest Hits album, even if they haven't really had a lot of hits...

The songs on this album are really all of Johnny's early career hits such as Misty, Chances Are, It's Not for Me to Say, When Sunny Gets Blue and The Twelfth of Never, etc.

Greatest Hits albums allow a new listener to be introduced to an artist without having to buy all of their albums in order to get a cross section of the artist's collective material. This album does a great job at pulling out the great songs Johnny has recorded while being easy on the wallet.

This album would be great for a quiet evening at home or to put on in the background when having guests over. Of course for the lovers, this album also fits the bill in the Romance department.

Johnn'y voice is crystal clear and deliberate on all of these songs. The orchestrations work with his voice and do not overpower him. A great blend for a great artist and a great choice for any fans of Adult Contemporary music!

One of the first of the "duets" albums.......2006-10-01

With the recent release of Tony Bennett's duets album, I was reminded of an album in my collection that I had not reviewed: "Better Together: The Duet Album" from 1991. At the time of the album's release, Johnny Mathis had been a musical legend for almost four decades.

During the late fifties and early sixties, Mathis had been one of the most dominant singers in popular music. He is still a major draw on the concert stage domestically, especially in Vegas and Atlantic City, as well as international venues.

"The Duet Album" finds Mathis paired with female singers, for the most part, that perfectly compliment his unique voice, most notably Dionne Warwick and Deniece Williams, both featured on two songs, respectively. Mathis and Williams scored a number one hit with "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late," featured on this album.

However, it's the pairing of Mathis and a cappella MALE virtuosos, Take 6, ("It's All in the Game" and "In the Still of the Night") that is the album's best. Mathis may have had an earlier success with an album entitled "Heavenly" but it is his soothing vocals, backed by the all-encompassing sound of the sextet, that is truly sent from above.

Observation: Mathis celebrated his seventy-first birthday on September 30th.

Johnny teams up with some of the best pop and soul divas........2003-09-19

Duets with such noteworthy pop and soul divas as Dionne Warwick, Deneice Williams, Jane Olivor, Regina Belle, Angela Bofill and Patti Austin make this CD a very pleasant treat. Although most tracks are very good, I particularly enjoy the duets with Jane Olivor and Angela Bofill.

Could Have Been Better.......1997-11-20

Johnny Mathis has blended his splendid voice with some of the finest voices in show business. Along with Deniece Williams, with whom he had his only #1 hit, the pathetic "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late", he's sung with Nana Moskouri, Natalie Cole, Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, even Lena Horne and Lorrie Morgan, among others. Unfortunately, few of these duets made it to this CD. Three new duets were included, ones with Regina Belle, Patti Austin, and a beauty with Ms. Warwick produced by Sergio Mendes. The rest had been previously released.

Better Together could have been a whole lot better. It's not that it's an unpleasant listening experience; to the contrary. The songs that were chosen are good ones. The thing is, there are even more good ones out there that could have been included, counting the ones from before 1991 alone. A sad omission: the Mathis/Warwick duet "I Got You Where I Want You" from the 1982 Friends In Love album, a delightful song. (Interestingly, both Mathis and Warwick both have an album with this same name, released the same year, and featuring this song and the title cut, which is included on Better Together.) Two Strong Hearts, another Mathis/Warwick gem from Mathis' Once in a While album, also deserves to be here. Another overlooked beauty, the slightly risqué "Different Kinda Different" featuring Mathis and the mysterious "Paulette" from the album of the same name. I could list several more, but won't. There are more than enough good duets and there was room for all of them. It's as if whoever is in charge of the ultimate content of recordings such as this one didn't trust the strength and beauty of the songs or the singers for this one, and that's unfortunate. Maybe Better Together part II will fill in the blanks. END

I had forgotten how great Johnny Mathis is until I recently watched his "50 Year concert celebration on PBS. I enjoyed it so much, especially one song, "99 Miles from LA" that I went on Amazon to find one of his cd's that had this song in it. Fortunately for me, I decided on this personal collection. It is hard to believe that I have four cd's in this collection that contain so many wonderful favorites of his that are absolutely fabulous and for such a small $ amount. Anybody that wants to revisit Johnny Mathis cannot go wrong with this collection. Bravo, Johnny.

This collection contains 4 CDs of Johnny Mathis singing the songs that made him an "American Singing Icon". The selections have been beautifully re-master and showcase Mathis's pure singing style and talent. The collection includes all of the big hits; Chances Are, Misty, It's Not For Me to Say. However; included are a number of truly wonderful Mathis songs like "Yellow Roses On Her Gown".

This Mathis collection will take you back to a time when couples held hands, and a "Kiss" was a "Kiss". Hearing Mathis sing these songs will make you remember the best days of your life.

When Streisand was growing up, she was imitating the pure vocal sound of the one and only Johnny Mathis! Was I surprised? Not at all! They reflect each other's style, repertoire and classiness in live performance. I have always been a Mathis fan forever and ever. And to have this precious boxset and play it in my laptop or CD player is priceless. Mathis has always been the benchmark for standard male singers. Even the new guy who has been making waves for singing standards like Michael Buble will not be at par with Mathis... at least not at this time! This is the best boxset of Mathis, in my opinion. One of the few CD collections I am keeping after de-cluttering my apartment... I cannot find it in my heart to let go of these great collections of music by the finest male voice of all time!
