This compilation provides a fairly good picture of 1978 in a mix of great hits and lesser favourites and a wide variety of styles. Disco was at its height and you'll find it here in the shape of Alicia Bridges with her classic I Love The Nightlife, Hi Tension with The British Hustle, Quincy Jones with Stuff Like That and Yvonne Elliman with If I Can't Have You. The Boomtown Rats, one of the better punk bans, contribute their Number One Rat Trap and another great rocker, Like Clockwork, while their compatriots The Jam provide Down In The Tube Station At Midnight and A Bomb In Wardour Street. Reggae is represented by Steel Pulse, Third World and 10cc. My favourites include the poignant Goodbye Girl by Squeeze and the mellow Just The Way You Are by Barry White, Rita Coolidges beautiful version of Words and this spirited version of Oh What A Circus (from Evita) by David Essex. My least favourite is the Eurovision song A Ba Ni Bi, which ought really to have been omitted in favour of something by the Bee Gees, Andy Gibb or Donna Summer. Apart from that little gripe, it's still a great album with enough timeless songs to appeal to lovers of all types of music.
