harold melvin & the blue notes cd.......2007-05-07
Thankyou for my order of this cd. Brings back great memories of good times and good music, that will always be in style. DEG
short run time, mediocre selection.......2006-02-08
only ten songs, so only a 30 min or so run time; and of the ten songs selected, i would say that half were great, the other half were mediacore background music with no oomph..
Still Shining.......2005-12-25
Even after Teddy Pendergrass, the most famous member left the Bluenotes the group led by Harold Melvin was still successful. My favourites include "Bad Luck Pt l, Wake up Everybody Pt l" and that ol' couples roller skating classic "If You Don't Know me by Now". Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes may not had as many hits nor lasted as long on the music scene as their contempories but the music was special and still endures. Rest in Peace, Harold.
Love those "Part 1" songs!.......2005-10-01
I used to have a different Harold Melvin collection, but listening to them sing "Sorry I lost it" for about 5 minutes on "The Love I Lost" just got to me. I know some people need that, but I'm fine with these radio edits. Heck, I grew up listening to those versions, so I've always been used to them.
Anyway, no one makes music like this anymore. No one. Ah, back then they used real orchestras for strings. And Teddy's just working it to death! My fave vocal of his is on "Bad Luck", social commentary with a beat! Great dance music, not disco, but dance music (yeah, there's a difference!).
Superb lyrics and music - lifeless sound.......2005-06-15
No doubt, these lyrics and music are superb; after all, this is why I purchased this CD. What wonderful memories! But, this particular CD's sound quality is lifeless and dimensionless. I didn't intend for this CD to be simply background music, as I like to become "drawn into" the recording, but that's all I can do. What a disappointment!
I have ordered many wonderful CD's from Amazon that sound great, but felt compelled to write and warn others.
I give this CD at 5-star rating for its lyrics and music, but only a 1-star for it's sound quality. With engineering like this, its no wonder so many would rather use free music-sharing services on the Internet rather than make a purchase.

Brings back memories.......2007-06-27
This compilation by Leo Sacks should please all Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes fans from the early 70's. Teddy is at his best and the Gamble and Huff production unbeatable. This CD is highly recommended to anyone who wants to listen to a great group.
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.......2007-01-04
Bought you back to the days when things were a lot calmer.
Excellent collection.......2003-08-20
I have been a fan of these guys for a few years now. This is an excellent choice to select out of all Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes collection CDs. I enjoy listening to every song, I am a huge fan of "Weak for You". This is a CD you will never become unsatisfied of, it is a timeless classic. I would reccommend this CD to anyone who has ever liked only one of the Bluenotes song, you will certainly become a fan after this one. I love this collection!
Best Of - If You Don't Know Me By Now.......2000-07-18
The songs on this CD bring back so many memories. I remember back when I first heard the group and thinking that the explosive lead singer "Harold Melvin" had a fantastic voice and such a feel for what he was singing! Later on to my embarrassment I found out it was Teddy Pendergrass who brought me out of my seat with his stirring renditions. Just listen to his urgency on "Weak For You!" The man is improvising almost every word he sings! He and Phillipe Wynne of The Spinners were two of the best at making it up as they went along. The man's a genius. On "Wakeup Everybody" he lays down the situation and puts out the solution. Wake up the teachers, preachers and doctors. Our minds, souls and bodies need a new way to go. If you like to dance with the bright lights shining on you or if you'd rather have just that lone blue light shining while you're holding her close this is the one. From top to bottom this is the best "Best Of" there is with all the full length cuts (except for "Tell The World..."). Even the B sides ("Keep On Lovin' You") are groovin. I guarantee you can't miss with this. It's a stone gas.
A more definitive package at last.......1998-05-30
It wasn't long ago that all the novice listener had to choose from were the Collector's Item package and the reissue of Wake Up Everybody. Now, at last, we have the real meat of the Blue Notes legacy...a collection of some of the growlingest, funkiest, most soulful sounds ever put on record. Teddy Pendergrass made himself a star with these recordings. Listen and be transported by the dominant voice that was TP before the hoopla surrounded and overpowered so much of his sound.

Great Essentials.......2007-05-30
This cd has one of the best selection of Teddy Prendegast, pre-solo. His voice varies from one song to the other between soft and sexy and rough and gritty. The back up singers (BlueNotes) aren't bad either.
Seventies soul from Philadelphia.......2004-10-30
Philadelphia is not one of the first cities that usually come to mind when discussing pop music, but during the seventies this was where much of the best soul-pop music came from, with many brilliant singers and groups showing the world what they were capable of. The Three Degrees and the O' Jays were among the most successful, together with Harold Melvin and the Blue notes, whose lead singer during their peak years was actually Teddy Pendergrass.
Singer-pianist Harold Melvin formed the group in 1954 (yes, I was surprised to learn that) and was its lead singer and songwriter for many years, during which time the group remained a local act. John Atkins took over lead vocals in the mid sixties but the group remained local. Eventually, Harold discovered Teddy who then joined the group, initially as a drummer. After John Atkins quit, Teddy was given his chance as lead singer and things happened quickly. The group were signed to a new label and given new songs by top songwriters, resulting in a series of great hits. Perhaps the name should have also been changed as Teddy was by then the star and focal point of the group.
The group had several major international hits including Wake up everybody, The love I lost and If you don't know me by now before Teddy quit the group in 1976, apparently because he resented the group name with Harold's name up front.
In the UK, the group's biggest hit was Don't leave me this way, which they had recorded in 1975 but wasn't released as a single anywhere at the time. Thelma Houston covered the song in 1977 and topped the American charts but Harold Melvin's original version was released as a UK single and made number five with Thelma's version peaking at thirteen. I wonder what might have been if their own version had been released in Britain and America in 1975. Actually, I love both these versions as well as the 1986 cover by the Communards (with Jimmy Somerville as lead singer) that topped the UK charts.
This re-mastered collection contains all the essential tracks from the Teddy Pendergrass years, including all the tracks I've already mentioned. If you enjoy seventies soul music, you'll love this collection.

Looking for The Gold.................2007-07-27
Anybody know a good source for Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes music? It's getting harder, and harder to find.
harold melvin and the blue notes featuring teddy pendergrass the ultimate blue notes.......2007-04-08
harold melvin and the blue notes featuring teddy pendergrass "the ultimate blue notes" is a spended cd over view of the best of their songs released on philadelphia international records of the 1970's. favs include "wake up everybody", "the love i lost", "bad luck", "if you don't know me by now", "don't leave me this way", "satisfaction guranteed (or take your love back) and "yesterday i had the blues". teddy pendergrass shines on this cd with his powerful strong singing style. a voice that commands your attention. pendergrass sings with such force and honesty. the best of all male soul singers. he would later move on to a very successful solo career. the music and the harmony is first rate. classic 70's soul at it's very best.
The Ultimate Blue Notes.......2007-01-12
Yes, this indeed is the best collection out there - and remastered to boot! The price is definitely right! Get your copy and go back to the time of real music, real musicians and real singers. Five stars!!
IF YOU DON'T KNOW THEM BY NOW !.......2006-06-21
If you don't know Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes by now, you're a lost soul! So sad to hear of Melvin's passing, but The Blue Notes still carry on that Philadelphia sound in his name !!
Philly soul at its very best.......2002-11-24
This collection of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' classic '70s songs, courtesy of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's wildly successful Philadelphia International Records, sound just as good as they did now as when I first heard them when I was a kid! Boy, do these songs take me back. I was raised on this music...when there was REAL passion and meaning in the lyrics, and there were REAL singers behind them. Case in point: Philly-born Teddy Pendergrass, whose powerhouse and distinctive lead vocals dominated all of the Blue Notes' major (and not so major) hits, lifted the group out of almost certain musical oblivion when he joined the group in 1971. Who could've guessed that when he crooned with such force in "If You Don't Know Me By Now": "Ten long years, ten long years we've been together, if you don't know me by now..." he was only a youthful 22?! He certainly sang it as if he had indeed invested ten years in a romantic relationship.
I loved all the selections on this CD, and especially the extended versions of "Wake Up Everybody", "The Love I Lost", "Don't Leave Me This Way" and "Bad Luck". I gave this collection only four stars because "I Miss You" is in its edited version, so I felt a bit cheated. But overall, this is without a doubt one of my favorite CDs. Philly soul at its very best.

Everybody SHOULD'VE Talked This One Up.......2006-01-23
I've had this on tape for many years (actually my wife - girlfriend then I think? - gave this to me and I still have it and cherish it), and what a sweet one it is. This album didn't do so well for some reason here in the U.S. but it really should've. Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes were potent on all the cuts, but in particular, "I Really Love You" and "Time Be My Lover" are exceptional ballads. If you want to hear quintesential "Harold" this is it man...All the riffs and style you know from his other greats are smoothed out in "I Really Love You." I'm really surprised you don't still hear this on soul radio, what a love song from a voice that brought you so many goodies. The rest of the album is nice too, and I absolutely love the guy that replaced Teddy Pendergrass, excellent choice, sounds so much like him. Saw them in person a while back and they did not dissapoint. Harold Melvin was still there then and they were powerful, like their days of old. Anyway, get this CD if you can. It's one that got away without proper appreciation for how good it really is. Believe me, you won't be dissapointed. -MB

The best of their compilations!.......2007-04-26
This greatest hits collection focuses more on their funk and disco period of the 1970's, which is what I personally prefer. It also contains full versions of their hits, rather than some songs which are followed by "Part 1". And when you're enjoying "The Love I Lost" and "Bad Luck", you don't want condensed versions!
Hidden Treasure.......2005-09-22
Over a span of 1972 - 1976 comprised over these years from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes a Collectors' Item of a group with a soulful sound of deeply rooted R&B. Though I am a bit confused of the group's name, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, it should have been Teddy Pendergrass & the Blue Notes or simply Blue Notes. "The Love I Lost" is simply an upbeat tune of a love going in opposite directions. Titles such as "Bad Luck", "Be For Real" and "Where Are All My Friends" are songs with a message as the foundation, yet played a minimum role as the vocals were more relevant. They show their faults as some relationships may suffer instead of healing some surprising issues on "If You Don't Know Me By Now". Sharon Paige featured on "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" aids with a more subtle tone to give this song the needed climax. The conclusion of this eight title LP, "I Miss You" was well worth the wait as Teddy vamps under the talk session of another member.
Watch out for Teddy's vocal vamps... .......2005-01-25
...when the TSOP/MFSB orchestrators break down the tunes and goes into extended grooving. Particularly on Bad Luck and Where are All My Friends. Some fans of HM&BNs will be slightly dismayed that Don't Leave Me This Way is not found on this collection. I however overlooked that because the compilation producers found it fit to put the dynamic Be For Real (I want folks to dig my style with a smile) here. Additionally the soulful I Hope that We Can Be Together Soon can be heard here. Teddy boy seemed to be a hard guy to replace because HM&BNs never did recapture thier success after this great Philadelphia International (with Teddy lead vocals) run. Thanks to the Recording Technology Gods we can hear how good soul music used to be...
Don't Even Think About Calling Them A Disco Act.......2003-09-28
Their facility with the kind of danceable R and B that would soon enough be called disco (and, in their case, was spinning the disco clubs about as often as the earlier Donna Summer and the Trammps, among others) should never obscure that, first and foremost, the lineup of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes which became stars in the early 1970s was a soul ensemble and a powerful enough one. (You can find plenty enough who mistake them for just another disco act.) Their regular albums tended a little too much toward either filler or extensions that didn't really enhance the songs, but here is where you get the absolute best of this quintet - from "If You Don't Know Me By Now" and "I Miss You" through "Bad Luck," "Where Are All My Friends," and "The Love I Lost" - without the excess and with everything that made them stars, from the effortless harmonies and rhythmic facility to the singular voice - maybe the most stentorian classic soul voice since Levi Stubbs - of Teddy Pendergrass (or, Theodore Pendergrass, as he was usually billed in the Blue Notes' heyday). Even three decades after their most successful period ended acrimoniously, this music is both the bridge between the vintage 1960s soul and what the 1970s ultimately became, for better or worse. Don't blame the Blue Notes for what was developed on the other side of the bridge; at their best. This set makes clear enough that they had the music's best interest at heart.
Leaves you begging for more..........1998-05-30
Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes are one of the great forgotten soul groups, one of those groups with a distinctive sound that the listener knows...but has no idea whose sound it is. It was, of course, the sound of Teddy Pendergrass, before the jewel-bedecked Love Man phase and before the tragic injuries...back when all the man had was a voice that wouldn't quit. Buy this CD if you must, but know that once you do you'll be back for the more inclusive If You Don't Know Me By Now package, which is far superior.

Soulful.......2006-08-22
Excellent. The soulful sound of Teddy on Pretty Flower to
Harold on To be True. Add the other tracks, and it cannot be beat. A classic.
essential blue notes.......2000-05-27
this cd contains a big chunk of the tunes from 1975's "to be true" previously available only as a japanese import. "somewhere down the line", "it's all because of a woman" and "to be true" are must haves for anyone remotely interested in the Philly Soul sound.
An album for lovers! Great to hear this old stuff again........1999-01-25
This album includes Pretty Flower and To Be True; two of the best of the Bluenotes. What a walk down memory lane this album was for me! Music just isn't made this way anymore. This type of Sexy, romantic lyrics you do not get from today's artist. Thanks amazon.com; I've been looking for some of these tunes for years!

Customer Reviews:
One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09
Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

One of Gamble&Huff's early great albums.......2006-07-12
I agree with the other reviewer I don't understand why it took so long to come out with this album on cd format. Truly one of Philadelphia Internationals best albums. My favorite songs are "I Miss You", "Be For Real", and "Yesterday I Had The Blues". To be honest you can listen to the whole album straight through. Teddy Pendergrass is one my top five favorite singers all time. He really knows how to belt some songs out and express himself with that exellent baritone voice of his. The singers of the sixties and seventies really knew how to distinguish themslves from one another as opposed to these here today gone tomorrow singers and artist in general of today. Most of todays artist artist all sound the same and sing in the same lame ol second tenor voice as opposed to being distinctive such as Pendergrass, David Ruffin,Eddie Levert,Marvin Gaye,L.J. Reynolds,Barry White,Luther Vandross,Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff really knew how to write and produce some outstanding material. They also had help arranging song with the great Bobby Martin and Thom Bell, and some of the members of MFSB. This was a time when it actually took creativity, camraderie and great live or housebands to supply the superb instrumental backing tracks. All in all to say the least this album along with the other great albums by PIR in during that time and in the near future were magnificent. Now all the label heads have to do is release the other two albums by Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes (1973's Black & Blue and 1975's To Be True). Sony get it done and holla at me soon!!
Philly Soul Fans Take Notice.......2004-02-25
Hard to believe it took until 2004 for somebody to release Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes first album featuring Teddy Pendergrass. This features some classic stuff like "I Miss You", "Be For Real" and of course "If You Don't Know Me By Now". "Yesterday I Had The Blues" is also worthy of your time. The other 3 songs are average tracks, but not bad by any means. The liner notes are okay, but hardly tell the story of the album or the group's history. Still, considering that Melvin's catalog has been anthologized to death, it's good to get an original album in print. Now that we have their first and last with Teddy (Wake Up Everybody) in print, there's hope that 2nd and 3rd albums will be next.
