In the mid '90s, Wall of Voodoo mainstay-turned-solo artist Stan Ridgway bid farewell to the major label treadmill via Drywall's masterfully dark debut and embarked on an indie career as the more historically-rooted, acoustically-centered singer-songwriter found of the compelling Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy albums. The original Drywall concept ("a trilogy of apocalyptic documents") seemed intended to variously antagonize his then-label, subtly evoke his Wall of Voodoo past and offer outlet for his latent "mad scientist" tendencies. But Ridgway has completed that decade-spanning triptych with an album that's closer in tone to his elegiac modern solo work (his main accomplices here are also the same, keyboardist/vocalist Pietra Wextun and guitarist Rick King), if no less thematically provocative than DW's first installment. The infectious, industrialized zydeco of "Goin' On Down to the BBQ" revolves around a typically debauched Ridgway storyline, while elsewhere Stan variously stirs in jazz (the saxed-up "Fortune Cookies"), cinematic cool (the evocative "Somewhere in the Dark" and "Rain On Down") and even folk conceits both nautical ("Abandon Ship," "Robbers & Bandits & Bastards & Thieves") and Celtic (Wexstun's haunting "Bold Marauder"). "The AARP is After Me" and tipsy "Something's Gonna Blow" are filled with typically self-deprecating Ridgway wit, while the electro-edginess of "In Total Focus" and "That Big Weird Thing" contrast sharply with the stark beauty of the morally ambiguous ballad "Buried the Pope." Drywall closes out their first trilogy in rich, expansive style - and ultimately leaves listeners hoping they'll embark on another soon. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Um...wow........2007-01-11
I love Stan Ridgway - witness my extensive collection of CDs and ticket stubs. I think he and Peitra are national treasures.
However.....
I have to say I found this album very hard to get my mind around. I am no stranger to music that is (more than a little) outre'. And I am willing to give anything involving Stan a chance. Several chances. But I honestly didn't enjoy this album. (Sorry Stan)
But it won't keep me from buying the next one!
Righty likes track 16, whoot!.......2006-07-21
All of Stan's work has shown a deep suspicion of the industrial-military complex, heaped and blended with existential nihilism. I never took such a dim view of American life personally, but appreciated his artistic window into the darker side of society. For the record I'm a right-of-center, Republican-leaner who voted for Bush twice and I found track sixteen to be clever and, yes, a bit childish, but fun and I enjoy childish fun even when it steps on my idealogical toes. That being said the rest of the CD is delightfully quirky, loaded with imagery both dark and campy, and sprinkled with childish fun. And very true to Ridgway form this CD is yet another deadpan narrative description of the writhing scaly spectacle that is modernity's underbelly. It's kind of like David Lynch for the ears. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I didn't feel it rose to the level of "Work the Dumb Oracle".
A Masterpiece of Strange / Pop Art for 2006.......2006-04-22
Continuing an on-again/off-again relationship with his Drywall side project that began in 1986 with Work the Dumb Oracle, the third album in Stan Ridgway's "trilogy of apocalyptic documents" isn't substantially different from his better-known solo work, at least on this 2006 release. His carnival barker vocals, bizarre lyrics, and shapeshifting cinematic soundscapes are in fine twisted form as the songs morph from the moody, bluesy harmonica-laced "Bury the Pope" to the more experimental subtle electronica textures of "Rain on Down" and the whimsical, Tex-Mex party atmosphere of "Goin' on Down to the BBQ." Co-Drywall conspirators/multi-instrumentalists Pietra Wexstun and especially Rick King are relegated to sideline status as Ridgway's distinctive vocals and lyrics dominate the proceedings. The diverse sounds combine aspects of Tom Waits (the percussive "The Alibi Room" sounds like an outtake from Rain Dogs), jazzy noir lounge ("Somewhere in the Dark"), Yello ("That Big Weird Thing"), and even world music ("Bold Marauder" is sung by Wexstun doing her best Grace Slick impression), but ultimately seem like Ridgway pushing his already elastic musical boundaries. At just over an hour, including a humorous bonus track that features sentences from George W. Bush speeches cut-and-pasted to mean something far different than what was originally intended, there is a lot to listen to here. Each track is overdubbed multiple times with layers of sound effects and instruments requiring repeated listenings to fully absorb. As with many Ridgway projects, the lyrical theme is obtuse but the music is so challenging, quirky, and innovative that the whole shebang is a mesmerizing musical trip. Anyone already a Ridgway fan will be thrilled, and open-minded newcomers might find enough of interest here to seek out his earlier, arguably more cohesive albums. Barbeque Babylon is a fun, often but not always lighthearted romp with the participants obviously enjoying themselves by painting a sonic palette the equivalent of '60s pop art. Part pastiche, part storytelling, and part experimental, the album finds Ridgway at the peak of his powers, creating music that demands attention even if at times it doesn't take itself seriously.
Track 16 is ridiculous.......2006-02-10
While I have Stan's full collection of solo stuff and love it, this album may not stay in my collection. There are some fantastic songs and truly innovating and amazinginly talented musicality on this one that we expect and usually get from Stan by the truckload. But I'm writing my comments primarily for the untitled #16 track. I'm not a republican or a democrat. Politics has nothing to do with it but the disrespect and childish editing of the President is embarrassing. The time, technology and (what they may of thought as cool) effort that they put in to making this stupid and over the top ridiculous word editing joke ruins the whole album for me. Perhps a few lines intended to make a point and reflect a measure of personal view would be "artistic" and acceptable but Drywall goes way too far with what they're saying here. A display of that much anti-american sentiment makes me think Drywall should move to Iraq and open up a recording studio there and tour the middle east, North Korea and Afganistan. Free expression, personal point of view and the right to say them are God given rights. But track 16 is just simply bad form, bad taste and childish. I would feel the same way if they did this obsurdity to Clinton as well. Track 16 isn't politics just stupid, really stupid.
Stan at top of form!.......2005-11-23
I'm here to tell you this is the best Stan Ridgway CD! A fan since the vinyl days of Wall of Voodoo, heard all the solo stuff (great, get it!), but this album is an absolute must buy. Killer stuff, classic Ridgway. The best yet!!

Jackyl, Rock Me Roll Me.......2004-05-14
Jackyl, Choice Cuts, reveals a great deal of talent, with a little bit of AC-DC and a pinch of Skynyrd. With guest, Brian Johnson (of AC-DC) on the vocals of Locked and Loaded and the accoustic Secret of The Bottle, Choice Cuts will always stay at the top of my list of Rock and Roll Supergroups!!!
Classic RocknRoll.......2002-06-24
What's to say about this collection?
Great hard rock that isn't afraid have songs laden with catchy hooks and melodies. So many metal bands today focus on heaviness and abandon the tunes.
From the enthusiastic We're an American Band, to the final energetic live recordings, this is an upbeat, getupandgo CD; though Jackyl show a darker, more mature side on songs like Secret of the Bottle, I Am the Walrus, and the melancholic Misery Loves Company. Surprisingly, they pull these slower, more thoughtful numbers off with ease and style.
Despite the fact that Jackyl appeared at the tail-end of the 80s hair metal breakthrough, they aren't popmetal. As they say themselves inside, they draw more influence from 70s hard rock, and their songs are strong and melodic enough not to have to resort to watered-down pop tunes or dire, pointless solos.
I don't know why many consider The Lumberjack to be Jackyl's greatest song. Granted, the chainsaw solos are original, but I'd say it was below the high standard of other tracks featured here.
My only complaints about this album are: the essay inside makes them sound pretty moronic (talking about alternative music: "we kicked the dawg!") Jesse James Dupree's voice can grate on the nerves after repeated listens, and Jackyl chose to release nothing in Britain. They could've reached a lot of people, don't they realise AC/DC are Scottish???
Those complaints don't overshadow the fact that this is a five star CD though: if you like good old-fashioned RocknRoll music then pick this up.
Maybe a 90's Date, But a Solid Sound Nonetheless!.......2001-05-04
When I bought the album, I was not certain what to expect. I knew Down On Me from it's radio play, but didn't know what the rest of the album would sound like. Nine times out of ten, I usually only like the songs I've heard before. This time, I got a good one! I was pleasantly surprised with it and am strongly considering picking up the other albums available.
Having heard Down On Me, I expected the band to have a sound like Dokken and other hard rocking hair bands that are a little bit harder than the other bands. Since they started at the end of the hair bend trend (though a trend that produced the greatest music ever), Jackyl combined the generic rock and roll done hard and fast that hair bands brought to the table and also has a lot of the blues based hard rock like ACDC in their music. As a matter of fact, Brian Johnson, ACDC's lead singer, joins the band to perform "Locked and Loaded" which, not having heard it before, I can honestly say was alone worth the price of the album. It's just a great song, and this is a lot of great music that will help you smile.
Again, it's a feel good bang your head, shake your butt, blow out the speakers in your car album that must be had by all! You will not listen to this album and want to crawl up in a ball and be left alone. It isn't awful grunge music that makes you feel depressed! It's not alternative which translates into depression! It's just great rock and roll music and there isn't a song on the album that I don't like!
JACKYL IS AWESOME!.......1999-12-11
I've seen Jackyl once and I'm seeing them twice. In Allentown Pa. On 12/15/99! Love them. They are the most talented musicians that I've come across in a long time. No words can explain Jesse James Duprees' performances'. I really enjoy this greatest hits cd. They've come a long way......And I know that they're there! LOVE YOU GUYS........KEEP ROCKIN'I

Customer Reviews:
A fan from Georgia.......2000-06-05
I can remember hearing "Groove Me" at the tender age of 5. It was very catchy and received a lot of airplay. I believe I had not heard the phrase (Sooky sooky) until he penned it. The most underrated song on "Baby Let Me Kiss You", which is not only seductive but the reggae and funk combination makes for a great dance record as well. He was truly an innovative artist before his time...
King Floyd.......2000-04-22
It is good to be able to find a compilation by this wonderful artist. He was a forerunner of what Malaco Records was to become. These tunes really helped to put Malaco Records "on the map.Motown and Stax were the Kings at that time."Floyd's first hit "Grove Me" and others are included on this CD. However, some of his great tunes such as Rappin' "Let Us Be" and the duet with Dorothy Moore ( We Can Love) are not included on this compilation and this takes away from the true concept of greatest hits. That may be the reason why it is called "Choice Cuts." Yet,it is still nice. He has the flavor of an Otis Redding in his smooth, warm, tenor voice style. He knows how to express himself in a song, for he can beg, plead (Woman Don't Go Astray) and give counsel ( Trouble) all through music in such a way that we get the message. This C D will make you dance, think and want your mate to hurry home at the same time. One might say that it is very good therapy for about eleven dollars.
I can't believe I love this CD........1999-06-25
I ordered this CD because I wanted to hear the original version of "Groove Me", which was covered by the Blues Brothers. Not only did I already know that version from a fast food TV ad, but I love this CD. I may be a 30-plus white rock fan, but I think King Floyd is cool (even if I don't know what "Sooky Sooky" (spelling?) means). I never thought I'd like a funk album. Note: With all the sexual grunts and other noises on this CD, comparison to James Brown is inevitable.
An underappreciated minister of New Orleans Funk.......1999-05-15
There's much more to this artist than "Groove Me".I remember growing up in the New Orleans area in the 70's and grooving to most of the songs on this CD.At the parties, the dances,or the nite clubs, you HAD to spin King Floyd. I was a DJ.

Customer Reviews:
A great 70's live album.......2004-01-21
This really is a great cd, Sugarcane and Harvey work well together and everyone in the band is a master musician. The songs are excellant, the band were overlooked at the time and this really needs to heard by a wider audiance, the crowd are enthusiastic and add to the atmosphere, in my opinion a lost gem.
One of the Highlights of the 70's Supergroup Genre.......2003-03-09
This is perhaps one of the funkiest Live Albums to come out of the 70's.Harvey Mandell is in top form on guitar, and those of us who know "Sugarcane" well, this is hard to top...This album did not recieve wide public fame when it was released, but if you want to hear a great live album, this is it. Finally it's available on CD, I waited for years for this, the CD is excellent, do yourself a favor and buy this to get "Soul Food" and other classic cuts...PF&DA...Yeah

The fundamental concerns of the horror genre haven't changed much since the '70s: have an audience identify with the innocent protagonist, introduce a menacing whatever, and then scare the bejesus out of viewers. The oeuvre's score has always been a key ingredient to its success, and the best music has risen above mere cliché. This loosely Halloween-themed collection (bookended by--what else?--director John Carpenter's jittery synth themes from Halloween) gathers a motley, occasionally suspect (Carpenter's synth bolero for Escape from New York and its industrial rework for Escape from L.A. are infectious, if not exactly genre correct) collection that documents the surprising variety of music that's underscored modern cinematic terror. The tracks here range from Eurocentric orchestral (Pino Donaggio's Carrie), neopastoral gone quickly bad (Nicholas Pike's "Sleepwalkers," Marco Beltrami's Scream, Christopher Young's Urban Legend) to chilling modernism (Howard Shore's Crash, Michael Kamen's The Dead Zone) to the lovably cheezoid electronics of John Carpenter and Dick Maas's killer elevator music from The Lift. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Nice Collection of Horror Movie Themes.......2000-03-03
This disk contains some of the most famous and clever horror and sci-fi themes from the 'B-Movie' drawer from the past twenty years. Each track sums up the music from the film in question nicely. A further bonus are the liner notes which provide fascinating insights into the tracks on the disk and the composers who created them.
High points of the anthology is the 'Escape from L.A.' medley which shows that an inferior sequel can have a superior soundtrack while playing with the cues from the original flick, the sample of the bizarre southwestern blues rock score from 'Vampires,' Howard Shore's 'Crash' and Christopher Young's 'Urban Legend' theme.
All in all, the tracks on this disk are all examples of high-quality film scoring... even if the movies they supported weren't always the best. It's a worthwhile addition to the collection of any movie music lover.

This "Best Of" compilation contains 15 songs from Screaming Headless Torsos' three incredible CD releases: "1995", "Live!!", and "2005".
Revered by serious music fans the world over for their unique sound, incredible songwriting and phenomenal musicianship, the Torsos have inspired many with their individual music that crosses the boundaries of jazz, soul, blues, Latin-funk fusion and still manages to totally rock out. Jazz musicians at the core with major careers outside of the Torsos along with some super serious chops, they combine Zappa- like inventiveness with exceptionally brilliant, funky performances.
Featuring David "Fuze" Fiuczynski on guitar, Dean Bowman on vocals, Fima Ephron on bass, Daniel Sadownick on percussion, Jojo Mayer and Gene Lake on drums.

Criminally underrated.......2006-12-03
See the above review for all you need to know. This band is criminally underrated. If you like this, you MUST get the double DVD.
Total awesome music!.......2006-11-12
This group is just plain awesome - they are the tightest groups of musicians I've ever heard. The vocalist, the lead guitar and the rhythm section are all in sync. "Fuze" is like a re-incarnation of Jimi Hendrix with 30 plus more years of knowledge. The range of music that Dave Bowman makes for vocals is beyond one mere human voice. Why the Screaming Headless Torsos are not widely known and considered one of the greatest groups of all time is a mystery.

Great Retrospective To A Highly Influential Band.......2006-10-04
Carcass was a band that played a highly influential role during their existence from the late 80's to the late 90's. Tracks from every album are encountered here, from their badly produced goregrind days during "Reek of Putrefaction" to their well produced classics "Necroticism" (death metal), "Heartwork" (melodic death metal) and "Swansong" (melodic thrash). However, there is more to that than just some songs off their timeless classics. Tracks from singles appear as well ("Tools of the Trade", "This Is Your Life"), along with two Peel Sessions from the years 89 and 90 (a goodie for old school Carcass fans). The booklet is also an interesting read, as it has a 2004 interview with Carcass drummer Ken Owen, and it retrospects their early days, their breakthrough days, and the days after Carcass has called it a day.
If you are a diehard Carcass fan, or even a beginner to their music, I recommend this collection. It's not just Earache's way of getting more cash, nope, it's much more than that.
good carcass compilation.......2006-08-19
Tracks 5 through to 13 are great! Real heavy, real clear. The rest of the songs from the bands earlier grindcore days sadly are s*%t. Regardless this album is crucial to any metallers collection. They were such a good english band.
Carcass' final legacy..........2005-01-28
If you're an all time Carcass fan, like me, you'll surely appreciate this best-of album. This brand new compilation recollects material from all their albums, from their uncompromising debut "Reek of putrefaction" to their latest "controversial" effort "Swansong". But the main dish here are the legendary Peel Sessions, rare and hard to find separately. The "Peel Sessions" are two sessions of live recordings in John Peel's radio Show in Great Britain back in the late 80s and beginning of the 90s.
Carcass' most acclaimed songs are featured in this album. All time classics such as "Exhume to consume", "Corporeal jigsore quandary", "Heartwork" or "Buried dreams", obvious choices when it comes to Carcass' favorites. Personally I'd prefered the song "Reek of putrefaction" from "Symphonies of sickness" instead "Swarming vulgar...", but it's ok anyway, considering that "Reek..." is taken from the Peel Sessions, in a killer live version. But, hey, that's me, and favorites may vary from fan to fan, and one or two songs wouldn't make the difference, because, as I said before, the main character are both Peel Sessions and, however, you won't find "Choice Cuts" songs that all Carcass fans don't already have.
Another positive thing is the booklet and album cover. Returning to their great old times, where everything was bizarre, obscene and grotesque. You can see their old logo in the front cover, and drummer Ken Owen slaughtering his buddies (with some kind of kitchen knife or machete) that are laying down, and whose spilled blood in the wall spell "Choice cuts". Yummy! Very primitive, but somehow showing the band's sense of humour since the beginning. Inside the booklet you have a collage of photos, backstage passes, concert tickets (like the ones from the famous "Gods of grind" tour with Entombed, Cathedral and Confessor), magazine articles, along with an interview with Ken Owen, whom, apparently, has been the mastermind behind this compilation. He talks about everything past present and future, the scene then and today, memories, anecdotes (how he met Jeff and Bill). A very interesting interview in which carcass story is told, well, answered really, by one who has been a part of it since the very start.
Remember that this compilation was supposed to be released a while ago, but it was suspended due to Ken Owen suffering a brain haemorrage and spending a couple of years in the hospital and now being in the recovery stage. Ken was feeling much better and "Choice cuts" now sees the light of day.
The Peel Sessions above mentioned suffered from a bad production, but they're great anyways, especially the second one, recorded an year later with an improved sound quality.
"Choice Cuts" has everything that al fasn will appreciate, reminding you the old times. Perhaps, the last legacy of one of the greatest death metal bands, whose memory and influence will live on.

Carcass are legends of Death Metal. This CD is awesome. I urge anyone seriously interested in Death Metal to buy this. If you don't like this, then don't bother with this genre. But this is great, and with 21 songs too! It even has the John Peel (R.i.P) sessions on there. The production on those last 4 songs are a bit low, but in a way, that makes them even more dirty and grimy and very much like Carcass.
In the booklet you get a pretty long and informative Interview with drummer Ken Owen too. It gives you a rough guide of the bands history for anyone interested, and even talks about Ken Owen's aneurysm he had back in Feb '99. All in all, it's pretty interesting.
If you're a big fan of Carcass, you probably don't need this as it's basically a "Best of.." album. But if you're really desperate for the bonus tracks, and like Carcass back in the early days most, then go ahead and add this to your collection. It's a good CD, and Carcass are very influential to the Grindcore/Death Metal bands of today.
Carcass rules !!.......2004-09-01
If your a fan of carcass weather you prefer their old grind days or the melodic death metal days... Which both eras were amazing being as carcass are very talented in wherever they do or touch. If your a fan carcass buy it and dont even think about you will not be dissapointed but if your new to grind get it aswell. Best songs ? 1-10 and the rest are amazing too. Buy it!
