This is not the first collection of David Gray's "pre-success" recordings, but it is the best one. Unlike many such collections of early works by noted artists, you're not seeing the artist's abilities in their infant state--each of these 15 songs is already great. The Mancunian musician's performing abilities were well developed by the time he first recorded in the early '90s; one might even argue that they sound best in the often stripped-down, more raw state on display here. The songs themselves, however, have definitely matured since Gray hit the alt-adult-contemporary big time with the electronica-tinged White Ladder in 2000; such songs as "Wisdom" and "Birds Without Wings" do show the marks of other singer-songers (notably Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan). These days, of course, David Gray is himself often used as an adjective, to describe all the other scruffy-bearded blue-eyed songsters reaching for the sensitive crooner's crown. --Mike McGonigal
Customer Reviews:
Why are you considering buying this album?.......2007-07-01
David Grey's early work is a treasure trove of brilliance. Some otherwise good performers put out hit-and-miss albums, and it's best to wait for the anthologies to grab the good tracks. Not here. The albums this anthology draws from are all stunning, from the first track to the last.
I'm not a DG fanatic; I'm just saying they are good. Very very good. So please, do youself a huge favor, and go pick up "A Century Ends", "Sell, Sell, Sell", and "Flesh". You're already here on Amazon, so go on. Consider it an investment in your soul, and you'll save shipping costs to boot. Because, after you hear these songs, you're just going to want to come back and hear all the tracks you're missing, like "Gathering Dust" and "Let the Truth Sting".
So buy this album if you must, but consider yourself warned: You'll love it.
Shining Before Babylon.......2007-05-17
This English singer-songwriter took a while to catch on in America, but he had released several acclaimed albums and EPs prior to achieving success in the U.S. This release is a compilation of the best tracks from these early British albums, and while these albums are now available themselves in the U.S., I get the feeling that this album is a pretty effective representation of the best efforts of those previous releases. Also, these tracks are relatively unadorned compared to those on Gray's recent releases, so the actual songs come through quite strongly in these recordings. Standout tracks: "Late Night Radio", "Everytime", "Debauchery", and the title track of his debut album, "A Century Ends".
Best of the Best.......2007-04-03
I used to have a mixtape of my favorite David Gray songs -- my "Best of." This CD is nearly an identical mix of that tape. These are the best of the early years. They are the best of David Gray. Usually, on a "Best of" compilation, there are always a few question marks in the eyes of fans that already have all the songs, but this one doesn't have any. One flawless CD.

Killer Rocksteady, some of the best!.......2004-10-14
While the first CD of this set contains most of Derrick Morgan's hits from the Ska period of the early 60s, it is the second CD that shows this artist at his peak in the later 60s. Derrick uses lyrics borrowed from Jamaican folk music paired with the intense beat of the rocksteady period to make the best music of his career. I'm particularly fond of his duets with George Agard (check out "Me Naw Give Up"). You have two of the best Jamaican singers of the time over some of the rawest, most insistent rocksteady ever recorded, driven by scratchy guitar and heavy basslines, this music sounds raw compared to the more polish releases by groups like the Melodians and the Maytals. The duets with Paulette are very affecting as well ("You Never Miss Your Water"). Crucial sounds from an era of Jamaican popular music that deserves to be more widely heard.

Very Spiritual.......2002-04-10
I have enjoyed the music of The Barnes Family ever since I discovered them by accident on 'free' music site.
Since that time, I have bought 14 different albums by the dad, FC Bares, and his son, Luther. Wonderfully spiritual music that is not heard often anymore.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite as the title says but very nice.......2004-02-12
In the early days of CD when I wanted to collect Merle's great songs, it was quite tricky, with no double CD's or boxed sets. I started with the Capitol collectors series which contained about half the essential early songs. A volume 2 was planned but never released. Rhino then released More of the best, which filled most of the gaps but still left me without a few important tracks. This compilation filled most of the gaps left by those other two sets. Another Curb compilation, 18 rare classics, also proved useful. So this is not actually the best of the early years, because songs such as Mama's hungry eyes, Branded man, Mama tried and Okie from Muskogee were to be found on the other two compilations.
Nevertheless, there are some Hag classics here including Legend of Bonnie and Clyde, All my friends are gonna be strangers, I threw away the rose and Sidewalks of Chicago. Perhaps the most famous song here is Today I started loving you again, a song that was only originally a B-side for Merle but which has been covered by many other country singers.
So, this is a handy collection of some of Merle's great early songs. If you want just a little of his music, this may appeal to you although you can probably get a stronger selection at a similar or only slightly higher price. If you are a committed fan looking to complete your collection of Hag hits, you may find this useful, though you'd have to check the track listing against what you already have, unless you've got the compilations I've already mentioned.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview.......2003-08-15
If you are not a fanatic, and don't want to invest in the (admittedly expensive) three-disc "The Classic Early Recordings 1951-56", this is certainly the best way to get all of Elmore James' finest recordings for the Bihari brothers' Flair and Meteor labels.
The three-CD anthology includes numerous alternate takes, which can be quite interesting for the collector, but on this fine single-disc anthology, you "only" get 28 A- and B-sides that James recorded for the Biharis, among them classic tracks like "Dust My Broom", "Sho' Nuff I Do", "Standing At The Crossroads" and "Blues Before Sunrise".
Some of the tracks are weighed down a little bit by the fact that every producer who came within striking distance of Elmore James wanted him to do that magic "Dust My Broom"-riff, which sometimes makes James sound like he's plagiarizing himself (something which he certainly didn't need to do), and songs like "Dust My Blues" are obvious attempts to duplicate the "Broom" formula.
But that doesn't change the fact that this disc features some of the greatest electric blues ever recorded - perhaps only bettered by James himself when, four years later, he went back into the studio to record for Bobby Robinson's Fire, Fury and Enjoy labels.
Many of the lesser known tracks are also great, such as "Strange Kinda Feeling" and "No Love In My Heart For You". The arrangements are simple but effective, with J.T. Brown blowing the sax and Ike Turner lending a hand (or two) on the piano on several cuts. And Elmore James' voice is powerful and intense, just like his slide playing.
Get this album, and the best of his Bobby Robinson-recordings as well (available on the superb box set "King Of The Slide Guitar" and on the single-disc "Shake Your Moneymaker"), and you'll be set. There is no finer electric blues available.

Album Description
Bob Marley's role in the global success of Reggae music is nothing short of profound. His innovative fusion of the raw sounds of music borne of the Kingston ghetto with sophisticated western pop and soul stylings created a unique brand of Reggae that took the music world by storm. Such is the extent of his influence that today, some twenty years since his tragic passing, his music is as popular as ever.
Bob Marley and The Wailers started recording as early as 1963 in Jamaica. Following six years of local hits and having worked with a number of different producers, the group started a collaboration in 1969 with Lee "Scratch" Perry, which proved crucially important to their future development. Perry brought more focus to the trio`s rebel stance and also recruited the bass and drum team of the Barrett brother, who became an integral part of The Wailer's sound.
This exciting collection features Bob Marley's early seminal work from the late sixties, along with the best collaborations with the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry. This collection illustrates the developing talents of a man who rose from the ghettos of Kingston to become the Third World's first international superstar, for the first time in surround sound.

The Best??? Not Really.......2002-03-21
First of all, the picture of Jimmy on the cover is clearly NOT from the "Early Years". Secondly, this set is very deceptively titled. These are not the best songs from Jimmy's early days, but instead the leftovers that hadn't already been released for his record label (Barnaby Records) in the early '70s. Basically, this is folk music with the silly early '70s social conscience you'd expect and some ever so slightly more refined numbers with backing strings. Even at the price, this is not a bargain...unless you're one of those weird completists who's had too many margaritas.
