5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

4 out of 5 stars Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Focus on the Recordings.......2007-07-23

I've made this small review of the Vivaldi Masterworks set because it is SO difficult to find a review of such a big collection.

The price is killer and you HAVE to buy it, but be warned: these are not the best recordings, you get what you pay for.

First of all, I'm not a Vivaldi expert, but I've heard his compositions throughout my life in so many different places and recordings and have a vague idea of how some have to be played. Secondly, I'm not a classical music connoisseur, but I love it and have over 300 discs of various composers and styles. Third, I know what a good audio recording should sound like and this will influence my critique of some discs in the collection. Finally, it's easy to get lost among all the tracks contained, so in some cases I will give you my favorite tracks in a disc.

I'm sorry, but I've only reached disc 20 of the box-set, as I listen to more this review will be expanded.

DISC 1:
Why would you use an AAD recording as a first impression for a 40 disc box-set and for the "Four Seasons", which is probably Vivaldi's best know work. The concertos are played enthusiastically, but lack any additional virtuosity to put it ahead of other much better recordings out there.

DISC 2:
Same as DISC 1, played and recorded by the same people.

DISC 3:
The pieces in this disc are VERY well played, nonetheless, you can hear heavy breathing from the soloist which can be a bit annoying.

DISC 4:
Very well performed as well, heavy breathing is less present.

DISC 5:
A very good recording, excellent execution by the hapsichord and good by the recorder.
Tracks 4, 6, 7 and the whole "La Notte" are extraordinary.

DISC 6:
Exquisitely recorded and performed by the Budapest Strings.

DISC 7:
Marvelous performance on the whole disc.
Tracks 22 & 24 are non-plus-ultra.

DISC 8:
Great performance too.
Suggested tracks: 7, 12, 15, 24

DISC 9:
To have an original baroque organ playing is a plus.
Solo strings are lacking in quality (for example: tracks 6 & 7).
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 8, 15

DISC 10:
Despite being and ADD recording, the quality is fairly good. The cello is very well played.
Suggested tracks: 3, 4, 12
Excellent track: 13

DISC 11:
Same musical group and soloist as DISC 10. The contrabass is extremely distorted sometimes, and if you take into consideration that this is an ADD recording, it can get pretty bad. Some background noise is perceived.
Suggested tracks: 3, 6, 9

DISC 12:
The compositions are somewhat boring, either way the performance is plain decent.
Suggested tracks: 10, 12

DISC 13:
Good performance and sound quality.
Suggested tracks: 1, 4, 6, 7
Excellent track: 12

DISC 14:
Good performance and sound quality too.
Suggested tracks: 10, 14, 16
Excellent track: 5

DISC 15:
Badly mixed, the basoon is blocking the whole ensamble by being in the foreground.
The playing precision is lacking.
An AWEFUL thing about this recording is that you can hear the basson key-sticking with the instrument and the saliva. It's horrible.
Such a pity, the sound of the basson with other instruments can be pretty interesting.

DISC 16:
Violins sound a bit off tempo.
Suggested tracks: 4, 8

DISC 17:
Good sound quality and performance.
Suggested tracks: 1, 7, 9

DISC 18:
Despite being an old recording, it is a very welcome one.
The performance is very well above par. Tempo is fantastic.
The quality of the recording could have been better due to some string plucking that is heard and which can become bothersome.
These are some of Vivaldi's best know tunes.
Suggested tracks: 4, 6, 13
Excellent tracks: 1, 3

DISC 19:
Lively recording.
Track 6 is the same piece found in another disc in the collection, but with a better performance.

DISC 20:
By now you've heard all of this pieces before in the other discs. Nothing new here, nor better.

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic deal!.......2007-02-25

If you are a fan at all of the Four Seasons you should love this music. I will admit right now that I am a classical music fan. I don't write or perform it. I am a novice listener. I have never taken any music lessons(though I am leaning in that direction) and certainly have not gone through any university music training. I started out in rock and roll but found classical as I got older and fell in love with it a few years ago.

With that context in mind I do hope I am able to recognize quality and this work is of the highest. It helps when you are starting with good ingredients in the first place. You can't bake great bread without great ingredients and Vivaldi's music library has some of the greatest musical ingredients of the last 300 years. They are very much the foundation for modern western culture and music. His talent is woven through what we are

The first 26 CDs are instrumental starting with the four seasons and working through many of the Master's many popular works. I will admit the four seasons are not the best interpretation I have heard but it is definitely acceptable. The rest of the music shows us many facets of the Baroque style and you can see themes emerging through some of the pieces that give us a 'fingerprint' of Vivaldi's style and the parameters of the stylistic leanings of the genre at the time. If you want to immerse yourself in 18th century music this is your chance

This music would be ideal for someone who owns a store and is looking for background music. With over 26 CDs of instrumental music alone you could have those constantly looping and you'd probably never get bored of them(OK I may be stretching it a little there). The reason is that the music does not leave a bad 'aftertaste' in your mind. It fits into the background as easily and naturally as it is to listen to it consciously in the foreground. If you are a fan of classical Baroque you don't usually need to be in the mood for this, it will adjust your mood to itself and Vivaldi's music is almost always of an uplifting sort if this collection is any indication. If you want something to listen to at your job 8 hours per day this is good for the mind and it would take you over a week to get through it if you listened to it every minute of every work day. You will also work without the worry of the music distracting your concentration. I find it enhances it when I'm working. I don't know how well this would work on school kids but teachers might want to try playing this during school time. You may create a few geniuses, we certainly could use more!

If you are looking for something to ease your sleep and oil your dreams I have put these CD's on in the background. Not only can I easily fall asleep when they are playing quietly in the background but it helps you sleep and you wake up in a very pleasant atmosphere if the music is still playing quietly when you wake(you probably would need to rip them to your MP3 player to do that). It's like napping at a classical music concert without the worry of being nudged by your spouse or offending the other concert goers with your snoring. That will be quite a unique experience for you and possibly give you some real sweet dreams. It has for me

So to wrap it up this is very intelligent, uplifting music that is great for your mind and your soul. It is definitely worth the purchase if you are a fan of the Four Seasons and the Baroque genre in my novice classical music fan's opinion

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Broad Selection.......2007-01-25

This 40-cd collection affords me a rare pleasure almost daily: the thrill of hearing something new by Vivaldi. Despite my best efforts over the years, I've managed to miss hearing a lot of great works by the master. Listening to a single CD now and then, catching tunes on the radio... you can't possibly get a comprehensive understanding of Vivaldi's output that way.

But when you work your way systematically from CD 1 through 40, you're sure to find many pleasant surprises. I've been skipping through everything I already know -- in some cases, it has only taken me about a minute to get through a whole CD (first 3 seconds of each track is usually enough). But then I stop and listen carefully three or four times to anything that's new.

Ah, what a pleasure. I've already acquired some new favorites. And some old standbys have proved even more rewarding, e.g. at first I thought RV 127 (CD 7, tracks 10-12) was performed too slowly (Naxos No: 8.553742 is much faster), but now I'm not sure; maybe it's BETTER that way! I can't recommend this set highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars $70....when was this???.......2006-11-25

Wish the cost was $70 now. Guess the record producer (or Amazon) got tired of making less than $2 per CD.

5 out of 5 stars $70/40... you do the math........2006-04-07

No, I don't own this collection...yet. However, the price of the collection compels me to review it beforehand. Never have I seen such a complete collection of Vivaldi compositions at such an incredibly low price. At $1.75 dollars a CD, the record producer (Brilliant Classics) isn't making much of a profit. The compilation pulls some of its works from DG Achiv Produktion's vault (see Standage), such as the violin concertos, as well as from unknown producers (the Poland Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra is heavily featured). The collection is so complete that it is academic, and I would not be surprised if music libraries quickly emptied it from Amazon's shelves. The collection is simply worth it for the incredible price (English Concert's recording of the violin concertos cost nearly 30 bucks, and is exactly featured here). Overall, the price alone makes this collection exceptionally attractive, and the ensembles featured aren't bad either.

4 out of 5 stars For Gould's fans.......2007-01-10

Glenn Gould was a great Bach interpreter. On this CD there are some less known recordings of Bach' music, like the transcription of Marcello's Oboe concerto. I boght this CD because of this piece, that is very beautiful and well played by Gould. The other pieces recorded here are not as good, including the Italian Concerto. But it is interesting for Gould's fans.

5 out of 5 stars Be warned there are shortcomings, but also be prepared for brilliance!.......2006-05-03

There are some shortcomings to this album and they are pointed out by other reviewers. However, there are gems present here that continue to dazzle long after Glenn Gould's untimely death.

I was particularly moved by BWV 974, especially the second movement. I would happily pay the entire price of this album just to have this particular recording.

As everyone knows, Glenn Gould was eccentric and some of his interpretations of Bach are very unconventional. However, his intensity jumps out at the listener and he is often as dazzling as he is eccentric.

Considering that much of this music was not recorded on piano very often before Glenn Gould came around, I have to acknowledge his contribution to grabbing people's attention. He still continues to do this long after his death, which I think is a testimony to his brilliance.

If you are not a Glenn Gould fan or you are looking for more standard interpretations, this may not be for you. However, if you are looking for a fascinating musical odyssey that is at times quite unconventional, then you might be very happy with this album.

You can certainly get a feel for the music from the samples above. If you listen to them and are still intrigued, I don't think you will be disappointed even with the Chromatic Fantasy. It's an unusual interpretation, but what can you expect from guy who wears winter gloves on the cover of the album and didn't even want to record this piece in the first place - EVER!

5 out of 5 stars An universal patrimony !.......2006-04-12

The huge and significant loss that for the musical world represented the disappearance of Glenn Gould resides in the simple fact that even twenty four years after his sensible departure, there has not been another pianist able to fill his place. His legacy seems to enhance proportionally through the years. His powerful cantabile line, his profound conviction still deserves him this status ?clat, that certainly have guaranteed a well wrought name in the immortality.

This enraptured anima state is not a mere product of the casualty or a mass media phenomena; he restored to music that divine majesty, sensitive effluvium and introspective gaze, far away from the delirious crowds, deeply focused on the meaning of the sound, and not in the beauty of the sound.

That `s why his legend has been increasing, in spite of his well known aversion to the advertising flashes. He never cultivated the public relationships, but the elevated rank of his musical partners, such Yehudi Menuhin, Jaime Laredo, Leonard Rose, Leonard Bernstein, Vladimir Golschman would seem to confirm that far beyond his countless irreverent behavior, his musical heritage eclipses all the previous misbehaved statements, opinions or his well commented and questioned attitude in the sense of deny to make future public appearances since 1964.

5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2005-08-02

There neither is, nor has been (am may likley never be), anyone who can interpret Bach like Glenn Gould.

4 out of 5 stars BWV 974.......2001-10-18

When you look at the pieces that are in this CD, you might think that these were leftovers. Yet, this CD has one of the most stunning pieces that I think Glenn Gould has ever recorded.

The Concerto in d after A. Marcello, BWV 974 is not one of Bach's more popular and well-known keyboard works. Yet in the hands of Glenn Gould, it is played with a sincerity that is completely profound. Listening to the second movement of this "concerto" has to be one of the moving experiences that I ever had. It is undoubtedly one of the best in the Glenn Gould discography.

Also, after hearing the three Scarlatti sonatas, you'll wonder why he didn't record more of them. It's played with a childish glee that is a joy to listen to. The L. 413 sonata is piece that you'll listen to repeatedly.

Alas, the "infamous" version of the Chromatic Fantasy is in this CD as well. It's not a horrible interpretation like what most people tend to say, but you wonder what in the world Glenn Gould was doing with his left hand.

Overall, the BWV 974 alone makes this CD worth the purchase. It is a stunning recording.

5 out of 5 stars The best -- top Scarlatti.......2007-01-10

Andjapariadze is ineffable, sensitive to a delicious degree almost beyond compare. Totally gives the lie to the cliche of Scarlatti as master of blitz. In one sonata she slips back into the over-speedy trap which all virtuosos are heir to, but it's to be forgiven. Not to be missed.

1 out of 5 stars Domenico Scarlatti, complete keyboasrd sontats vol 1.......2005-07-19

I heard a version of one of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas on the radio while driving. It was completely captivating for me. i wrote down as much of the information on the peice while i was driving as safety and good judgement would permit and then searched for the product on amazon.

this was definitely not what I was after. This album lacked the brilliance of the performance i heard on the radio.

    still searching.

5 out of 5 stars Eteri Andjaparidze Plays Scarlatti Sonatas.......2005-03-22

Domenico Scarlatti (1685 --1757) composed over 555 short sonatas for the keyboard which made him, as the liner notes for this CD aptly point out, "the greatest of idiomatic composers for the harpsichord." With that recognition, it is intriguing that this is the first volume of a projected complete recording on the Naxos label of the Scarlatti sonatas on the piano. These pieces, with their aristocratic ease, sway, brilliance, and linearity fit beautifully on the harpsichord. I always feel a twinge of regret when I hear them on the piano. But there is another side to the matter. I have attempted some of these sonatas myself on the piano from Ralph Kirkpatrick's anthology of sixty sonatas. Furthermore, as a projected complete set of the sonatas, each of the volumes will include a mixture of familar works as well as works which most listeners will hear for the first time. Finally, each CD in this collection will be performed by a different pianist. I find this an excellent way of performing the complete set as the listener will hear the range of sonatas peformed by different artists in their own styles. Thus, the series offers an excellent way to get to know Scarlatti and pianism.

This CD, the first volume in the series, features the Georgian pianist Eteri Andjaparidze. She has recorded a variety of works for Naxos, including music by the American composer Zez Confery and works by Prokofiev. She performs seventeen sonatas on this disk, ranging from the early (K. 8) to the late (K. 544) Ms. Andajaparidze performs Scarlatti with a light touch indeed. Her tone is quiet and light and much of her playing is highly reflective. She does well with the scale passages, filigree, ornamentation, and repeated notes that are an integral part of Scarlatti's style.

The CD includes good program notes which comment briefly and evocatively on each of the sonatas on the recording. Of the works on this CD, I enjoyed particularly the sonata in E-minor, K. 402. This is the longest work on the CD, running over twelve minutes. It is a slow, reflective, and elaborate work featuring lovely falling arpeggios in the right hand. I also enjoyed (and have attempted to play) the sonata in G major, K427, which Scarlatti directs is to be played "as fast as possible." An unusual marking which should bring joy to pianists tempted to rush! The sonata in G minor, K.450, which is a march in the upper register of the instrument and the sonata in F major, K.446, which is flowing, introspective, and dancelike were also among my favorites on this CD.

Scarlatti's music gains its depth from its lightness and gaiety. Those listeners unfamiliar with Scarlatti will have an excellent opportunity to get to know him through this series of his complete sonatas on Naxos.

3 out of 5 stars Such a tragedy this CD is not on a harpsichord.......2002-10-26

This CD contains dynamics, phrasing and embellishments on the piano, not the harpsichord. They are done very well but they have interspersed and overlaid the 20th century with the 17th.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for Vol. 2.......2002-03-12

I have read Melvyn Sobel's review of this CD, and absolutely agree with what he says. So what can I say?

This is a very refined CD. It is very quiet. All you hear is the music sung on a keyboard with little or no pedal. The playing brings to mind some early Horowitz live Scarlatti performances where he was able to bring out with utter clarity a muted, quiet sound without trying to copy the harpsichord.

One exception to this is the magnificent G major sonata (K13 / L486) where our player just plain romps. I feel this sonata ranks with music's greatest keybord works for its wit, brevity, beauty, and joie de vivre.

Another super-plus for this CD is the table of contents: note that out of 17 tracks, 12 are in the K number range over K400; i.e., music written in the last years of Scarlatti's life Would that other CD's might follow this pattern.

I hope that Ms. Andjaparidze keeps her eye on the ball, and does the complete Scarlatti before she chases other pursuits a la Rachmaninoff

    5 out of 5 stars Scarlatti's Invention.......2005-10-07

If you love the harpsichord, and you want to listen to endlessly inventive music, and to an endlessly brilliant interpreter, then STOP! Landowska gives life to Scarlatti's brilliance. True, the sound is aged, but you'll soon understand why you are thinking she had recorded all of Scarlatti's sonatas!

5 out of 5 stars More than historical interest.......2005-05-05

As another reviewer noted, the sound quality here is as good as one can expect--though I'm sure the EMI engineers could have figured out a way to eliminate the anti-aircraft background at the end of the first half of K 490!

Landowska takes few if any repeats, and that's why there are 24 sonatas in 69.23 minutes. In addition, her tempos are fast in most--only K 159 was notably slower than is typical of more recent recordings. Did I say K 159? It's probably the most often recorded of Scarlatti's sonatas, and points to the fact that the sonatas on this album are almost all part of the informal canon of the "Best of Scarlatti" approach.

But complaining of this is like complaining that Shakespeare's plays are so full of cliches. Not just the selection of sonatas but the familiar way she plays them make it clear just how influential Wanda Landowska was.

All Scarlatti fans will enjoy this album, especially those who hear Scarlatti as a colourful and more often than not, lightweight composer.

Oh yeah, the notes: Lionel Salter's 1993 notes in English are a sonata-by-sonata program guide that are useful when he sticks to technical stuff. But for those willing to wade through the French, Andre Tubeuf's essay provides a temporal and stylistic context for Landowska that's truly HIP.

5 out of 5 stars Landowska's Scarlatti in enhanced sound quality........2003-05-04

The pioneering work done by the diminutive Polish keyboard player Wanda Landowska in reviving the harpsichord sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti was enormously influential in its time and recordings of it can still be heard today. Collectors will find at least two reissues of her Scarlatti recordings on the market. One is the Pavilion/Pearl 2 CD set. It contains all her Scarlatti recordings plus a few bonus extras. I have already provided a review of it. This Angel single CD set appeared earlier and contains a selection of 24 of the 40 or so sonatas she recorded.

Balancing the incompleteness is the better sound quality in this issue. Angel's engineers have discretely brightened and polished the sound of the originals, rendering an aural image that more convincingly suggests a harpsichord rather than a giant barrel organ and compensating for the inadequacies of the 1930s technology at the original recording sessions.

Landowska's romantic, picturesque and sometimes fanciful notes, written to accompany the original issue of twenty of these sonatas, are not reproduced in either of these modern reissues. Lionel Salter, himself an eminent harpsichord player and authority on Landowska, provides the notes for this Angel CD. The picture on the front depicts Landowska gazing at the view from the recital hall attached to her home near Paris.

This CD is one of the few to be awarded a rosette in the "Penguin Guide to Classical Compact Discs", the reviewer asserting Landowska's "playing has more character than most other harpsichord players put together".

Earl Wild is a premier Lisztian, one of the great Romantic pianists of our age, claims easily confirmed by this two-disc set of major Liszt piano works recorded in 1985 and issued here in splendid sound. The attributes of Wild's playing are all present on these discs--a big, burnished tone, the technique to make even the most difficult works sound easy, and mastery of both subtle rubato and grandiloquent rhetoric, both indispensable for satisfying Liszt playing. We hear these immediately in the Dante Sonata, where Wild's brazen colorings and wide dynamic range capture Liszt's depiction of the poet's Inferno. And we hear those pianistic virtues at the end of the recital as well, with a gently flowing, poetic Consolation No. 3. The Sonata has been recorded by most of the century's great pianists, but Wild's interpretation is compelling by virtue of its flowing narrative approach--you feel he's telling a dramatic story that seethes with passion and has long chapters of philosophic reflection. Perhaps it's that storytelling aspect of Wild's Liszt that makes it so individual and at the same time so true to the Lisztian spirit. Everything on these discs is played at the highest level. Miss it at your peril. --Dan Davis

    5 out of 5 stars Untiring virtuousness!.......2006-04-05

At the moment to recall the great Liszt interpreters in the last Century, Earl Wild must be always included, due he not only is owner of a prodigious and subduing technique, but besides, he possesses that fundamental lyric flight, so necessary at the moment to play this Hungarian composer.

Overwhelming expressiveness, éclat, powerful spelling, flair and dazzling fingering make of this CD an absolute must for all those who want to know the minimum facets of these fireworks pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Only Liszt did it better!.......2001-04-03

Okay, that might not be entirely true, but I'm very excited after listening to this 2-CD set of some of the best of Liszt's music for piano. We begin with the 'Dante' Sonata and end with the lovely Consolation no. 3. What's in between? Music of light and dark, angels and demons. The Sonata is played as I want it played--finally! And Earl Wild is telling a story here. But the power! the grace! the lyricism! I've been listening to a lot of Liszt this year, by several players, and I have to say that I'm going to buy as much Liszt by Earl Wild as I can get my hands on. Judging by these two discs, I place him pretty much at the top of the heap of Liszt players. They all have their strengths, yes, but there's something about Wild. I'd love to hear him play the Transcendental Etudes, the Years of Pilgrimage, Paganini Etudes, the Waltzes, the transcriptions... SO: buy this set and fall in love with Liszt again.

    5 out of 5 stars Definitive Scarlatti.......2007-05-26

I've been a Scarlatti fan since I discovered the Ralph Kirkpatrick recordings on Columbia when I was in high school--some 40 years ago. Over the years I have played some of them on the piano and collected numerous recordings, performed on both harpsichord and piano. I first purchased Scott Ross's complete collection after sampling the 3-CD Scarlatti Anthologie and being pleased with what I heard. After listening to about a third of the 34 CDs on which the 555 sonatas are recorded I can say that Scott Ross's performances equal or exceed anything I've heard from any other performer on harpsichord. There are recordings by other performers I rate very highly--Wanda Landowska's characterful pre-WW II recordings and Andras Schiff's superb piano recordings of the sonatas come to mind--but Scott Ross has it all. Meticulous accuracy, a truly engaging sense of rhythm--so critical in bringing out the character of the sonatas, a superb sense of the Spanish idiom Scarlatti uses, elegant ornamentaion, a masterful selection of stops, and the wonderful recorded harpsichord sound all make this set a thoroughly satisfying musical experience for the Scarlatti lover. Bringing all of this quality to the formidable task of recording all of Scarlatti's 555 sonatas is a tremendous achievement and a true service to the music loving public. In addition to the pleasure of having such a treasure trove of great Scarlatti performances, the complete collection has afforded me the oppotunity to discover many elegant gems among Scarlatt's lesser known sonatas--the kind that stay in my head days after hearing them. That Ross died at the relatively early age of 38 was a real loss. If you're a Scarlatti fan, treat yourself to this complete collection. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing accomplishment.......2005-10-20

This recent re-release of Scott Ross's complete recordings of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas is truly a great a accomplishment. The 34 CDs contain all 555 sonatas. The vast majority are played by Ross on the harpsichord, or harpsichord's I should say. Four different harpsichords were used, one Italian and three French. While various groups of Sonatas might sound a bit different it doesn't take away from the experience at all.

And what an experience it is. Ross's harpsichord playing is bright and lively when required, relaxed and subdued at other times. While it's hard to imagine that Ross was able to become intimately familiar with 555 sonatas over the year it took to record them, his performances do not show any signs of boredom. The sonatas are overall focused and well performed.

In addition to the hundreds of harpsichord sonatas, there are also recordings of Scarlatti's five sonatas with string and woodwing accompaniment as well as his three organ sonatas. All keyboard parts are played by Ross.

The packaging of this set is very compact. Each CD is in a thick paper cover, the whole of the set in a single box. There is also a 255 page booklet that contains a short description of nearly every sonata. Additionally there is an interview with Ross from 1986.

This is a wonderful set for any fan of Scarlatti and Ross. And at the price, it would even be worth it for anyone who enjoys Baroque harpsichord music but isn't familiar with Scarlatti. I highly recommend this set.

When you hear the methodical full-body slams (or so they seem) delivered by pianist Chris Brown on Henry Cowell's Dynamic Motion, it amazes that the composer scripted the piece in 1914. Exactly when the world was hitting its modern stride, when speed was vital, Cowell was plunging listeners into the most dense piano music ever composed, even using the term cluster to describe how the piano ought to be played in his works. This collection of 26 Cowell pieces focuses on the easily contained modern era, all of it composed before 1930 and most before 1925. Don't let that mislead you, though; these are some of American music's most maverick moments, times when Cowell made himself perfectly clear in declaring a new language for the keyboard. The pieces, while resolutely American in their declarative, independent character, are also painfully lovely, each suggesting (and many making abundantly clear) the profusion of tonal and atonal possibilities in different clusters. The performers are an adventurous lot, with Brown and Joseph Kubera the best known. But Sorrel Hays and Sarah Cahill do equally tremendous things with these works, exploding them for their full interpretive potential (as Cowell would want). This is one of the great piano-music releases of the 1990s, intrepid and sonically outstanding. --Andrew Bartlett
