5 out of 5 stars SOUL GROUP CLASSIC.......2007-06-23

ALL TIME CLASSIC BEST OF CD , EVERY TRACK I LIKE ALOT , THEY WERE ANOTHER SUPER SOUL GROUP FOR THE 70'S SEEK THIS OUT ......TIMELESS

4 out of 5 stars I hear something a bit different.......2006-11-10

This is an enjoyable compilation. The Chi Lites were a second tiered group, they were a quality soul group yet they did not have as many hits as the Temptations, Four Tops or other more prominent groups.

What I like about them is that, out of completely nowhere, they would inject these psychodelic and fuzzed out guitar riffs, the phatest bass lines of the era and I love that guy with the deep, I mean DEEP voice. He was an instrument all by himself.

The ballads are nice, but the songs like "Have you Seen Her", with its crazy fuzzed out, introductory guitar tone, is what gets me going. "Power to the People" is another psychodelic song. Don't miss "Are you my woman" which is the song Beoyance sampled for her hit "Crazy in love"!

This group went a bit against the grain which I like.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific collection.......2006-03-08

If you're like I was, you probably know "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her" and have acknowledged that they're great songs, but you secretly suspect the Chi-Lites of being something of a one-hit wonder (okay, a two-hit wonder). Then you will be pleasantly surprised to discover that nothing could be further from the truth. This compilation is full of great songs, and not just in the "Oh Girl-Have You Seen Her" variety. There's also a good bit of early funk to go with the soul. Most importantly, it's all worthwhile. The Chi-Lites concentrated on the three most important things (as far as I'm concerned) in pop music: Melody, harmony and lyrics. They nail them all. "We Are Neighbors", "Let Me Be the Man My Daddy Was", "Stoned out of My Mind", "Homely Girl", "Give More Power to the People" are splendid examples, but I could include every song on this compilation. And, as other reviewers have noted, the sound quality is superb, crystal-clear. I frequently spin around to see if Eugene Record is standing behind me. No, it's just the CD. If you have any affection for the sweet sound of 60s and 70s soul, buy this record, and you'll be well rewarded.

4 out of 5 stars Chicago Lite.......2005-12-20

They may not as been as popular as other similar groups of the day but the group that started out as Marshall & the Chi-lites found their niche in pop history. When you first heard the heartfelt wailings of "Oh Girl" or "Have You Seen Her" or the Rare Earth sounding "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" we were hooked. We didn't know much about the politics of such songs back then when they were released, we just knew what we liked. We liked the Chi-lites. And still do.

5 out of 5 stars For God's Sake..........2005-08-20

Give more power to the people! If you know the Chi-lites, you know that song. Talk about classic soul! The fantastic Chi-lites didn't get as much recognition as other early smooth, 70's crooners..but they could hold a note with the best of them. From their fab-u-lous harmony on "Oh Girl," to their smash vocal performance on the hit "Have You Seen Her."

But if you dig deeper, you'll find other gems like the fantastic cut "Write A Letter to Myself," and one of my favs: "I Want to Pay You Back for Loving Me." The intro lyrics and high vocals are unforgettable: "I'm gonna give you you a 5lb box of love, with a million dollar bill on top, diamonds on every corner and a big black pearl for a lock, use my heart for a key." Can you say classic! Other stellar, stand out, poignant, touching heartfelt cuts are: "Coldest Days of My Life" and "Toby!" The former always bought me to tears when I was younger. I thought it a most beautiful and deeply touching song and still do.

These guys had ultra harmony and rhythmic skills. You definitely need to add them to your old school but still sounds good collection, along with the Delfonics, the Main Ingredient, the Stylistics, the Temprees, the Dramatics and the Originals.

4 out of 5 stars Hot on a thing.......2005-09-09

This is one of those classic late 70's early 80's soul albums often overlooked when a group has peaked. All the unique Eugene Record style and Chi-Lites sound is there, in the usual, beautifully subtle delivery we have grown to know and love. If you are a Chi-Lites fan this is worthy of you collection and you will will enjoy the 'Try my side (of love)' track, which is my personal favorite from this set. For those of you new to Chi-Lites this is a fine album of it's time but perhaps a little dated for a younger audience brought up on hip-hop and garage. If you want to hear how things were done in years gone by when singing was more important than computers making today's average or bad singers sound good, then here is one of many groups from a world of true soul.
Enjoy

4 out of 5 stars Kudos to the Chi Lites.......2005-08-18

I have been a fan of the Chi Lites since I was a kid. I remember hearing "Have You Seen Her" and "Oh Girl" over and over again. My mom/ dad were BIG Chi Lites fans. In fact, I remember a picture that my mom took w/ the group when they performed in Tampa, FL back in the early 70s. I must admit that I had never heard "Hot on a Thing" until this CD. Man, talk about a nice groove...the minute I played it, I was sold on it. It has such a nice melody and great words too. I have since played the song for two good friends of mine, and they too have been sold on it. This song will definitely be played at my next "Bluelights in the Basement" house party!!!

4 out of 5 stars For «You can get over» at least.......2007-07-29

It's hard to understand what was in Polygram's mind in 1989 when they issued this compilation. They apparently chose disco songs at random in their catalog and put them here. Anyway we have rare tracks here like «You can get over» [8:50] by Stephanie Mills, «Take me home» [7:30] by Cher and «Flash light» [10:40] by Parliament. The songs are not very rare but those 12" versions are (especially «You can get over») ! There is one Gloria Gaynor song, 1975's «Casanova Brown» (why this one and not another one? Mystery) but we can find it on many other Gaynor's compilations. The liner notes are kind of interesting but an 8-page booklet with photographs doesn't allow much space for information.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Way to Remember the Early 1970's! :).......2001-04-30

This is the only one in the series that I own right now, although looking at some of the other CDs in this collection, that may not be the case for much longer. I bought this CD about 7 years ago, mainly for two of my favorite R&B songs of the early-70's period, First Choice's "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" and "I'm Doin' Fine Now" by New York City (where I was born and raised). In fact, I had bought the single of the latter song way back when I was 6 years old, one of my very first music purchases! :)

"Love Jones" and "Superfly" are such classics, although I'm more fond of "Love Jones." War's "The World Is A Ghetto" is so brilliant with the harmonizing vocals, as well as being really catchy and funky. Johnny Nash's "Stir It Up" is catchy reggae-pop, and The Four Tops' "Ain't No Woman (Like the One I've Got)" is a classic (Although it could also be called a relic, as Levi Stubbs sings the line "Cause it's my word, my WORD she'll obey.")

The most risque song on this CD is easily "Pillow Talk" by Sylvia (Robinson, of "Mickey & Sylvia" fame from the late 50's) in which she simulates an orgasm at the end of the song. Although she was not the first one to do that in a song (that honor, so to speak, would go to the Chakachas for their extremely randy "Jungle Fever" a year earlier, as the wonderful and informative liner notes point out), this song raised quite a stir in 1972 (in more ways than one!). It still never fails to turn heads, if you know what I mean! ;) After all, it WAS put out during the height of the sexual revolution!

This is a really good CD for those of us who wax nostalgic for some of that great early '70's music every once in a while!

5 out of 5 stars Great installment in a Great series.......1999-07-12

Vol. 10 of the Didn't it Blow Your Mind series is outstanding featuring such classics as "Superfly" and "Ain't No Woman" to more underrated and forgotten gems like "Leaving Me" by the Independents. Highly recommended.

Other male soul groups could step off the macho tip, but even the Temptations had to pray for rain before letting their feelings flow. Eugene Record's Chi-Lites, on the other hand, didn't even allow themselves the face-saver of a loudly pained lead vocal. When Record wandered through the city looking for the most basic succor of a glimpse of his lost lover's face on "Have You Seen Her," his bewilderment and fear were fully on display. And rather than offer a full-throated paean to her replacement on "Oh Girl," issued a few months later in the summer of '72, the group instead focused on how wrecked the guy would be were she to leave, too. The Chi-Lites' records were so perfectly conceived and performed, however, that even their occasional brazen leap into the tough-guy ("Are You My Woman") or social-comment slot ("Give More Power to the People") remained credible in light of the devastation that marked most of their work. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A Lonely Man..........2006-12-21

A great classic R&B disc by a great group! "Oh Girl" and "The Coldest Days of My Life" shine on this disc. Five stars...

5 out of 5 stars At the top of their game.......2004-03-07

Like most white fans of the group, I suppose, I didn't get hip to the Chi-Lites until the fall of 1971 - my senior year in high school - when "Have You Seen Her" crossed over Big Time. That's all it took and I was a rabid fan immediately; even the flip side ("Yes I'm Ready If I Don't Get To Go") was great for repeated playing. It was time to play quick-catch up, as I determinedly did. My 45s collection runs all the way back to their 1969 cover of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," to their last Brunswick single in 1976, "You Don't Have To Go." It's a fine collection I have still, and I jealously love it.

The "Lonely Man" album happened upon me at a time when I could not have better identified with it's theme - I was unhappily broken up, broke, and at very loose ends - the perfect audience for this LP's, "The Coldest Days of My Life." Life got better, but for the moment, Mr. Eugene Record's lyrics gave voice to my very soul. He's frighteningly realistic in his tale of despair, and one worried that, after he did this lead vocal, he might have looked for a bridge to leap from. It's That Sad. But as soul music, it's unbeatable. As one issue of Rolling Stone Album Guide observed, no black group ever more daringly or more successfully spoke to the idea of masculine vulnerability like the Chi-Lites. Special effects like a forlorn harmonica and wind machines were never in better hands, either. Perhaps hesitant to release "Days" entire 8:30 length as a single side, Brunswick put it out as a 'Part1/Part 2,' which probably wasn't a good idea - this song shouldn't be interrupted. But even in that formulation, it did well.

Speaking of singles, "Oh Girl" of course, was the biggest success here, and certainly drove this album's sales nicely, but the title song (whose entire 6:23 length went on one side) and "Living In The Footsteps of Another Man" all made it out as 45s, and those three plus both parts of "Days" made it into the group's first "Greatest Hits" set later the same year.

While you really can't go wrong with any of the Chi-Lites material from their Brunswick days, this album appeared when they were at their very zenith of success, and it's a gem. It was originally Brunswick LP No. 754179, and released in April 1972.

5 out of 5 stars Brings back many great memories.......2003-02-09

1972. I was completing my freshman year in college and what better way to exemplify and embellish that year is "Oh, Girl", the monster hit from "A Lonely Man".

Not only is this disc pure soul, it is one that surely befits the label as one of "soundtracks of a generation".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Chi-Lites.......2007-03-09

The CD was in excellent condition, a good addition to my collection.

1 out of 5 stars Brunswick.......2007-03-09

Can you help me find the original recording on "Stoned Out of My Mind" by the Chi-Lites. Most of the C.D.'s are the Brunswick re-recordings. Thankyou.

5 out of 5 stars All the big British and American hits.......2005-03-21

Hailing from Chicago, the Chi-Lites took a while to find success but their efforts eventually proved worthwhile. Eugene Record, a singer-songwriter-producer, dominated the group, which achieved an American breakthrough hit with Give it away in 1969 although they did not enter the British charts until 1971, when they had a minor UK hit with For God's sake give more power to the people - a very different record from the soulful ballads that they are best remembered for.

1972 proved to be a big year for the Chi-Lites, yielding Have you seen her (a top three hit in Britain and America) and Oh girl (a number one American hit, though only a top twenty UK hit). Their last major American hit came with Homely girl but (after a slow start) their success in the UK continued until 1976. Homely girl, It's time for love and You don't have to go all made the UK top five, as did a re-issue of Have you seen her (just over three years after its original chart run).

This compilation contains all the important Chi-Lites hits from both sides of the Atlantic.

NOTE - This review is posted on more than one Best of Chi-Lites CD. My review refers to the British compilation on the Kent label.

1 out of 5 stars Sound Bites!!.......2000-08-19

I agree with the last review. This recording is terrible!! The sound quality is horrendous. I should have sent it back upon receipt.

1 out of 5 stars This is a shell game ..........2000-06-08

This is a RERECORDING of the music. DO NOT BUY THIS unless you want ridiculous "digitally recorded in 1995" versions of great songs. It sounds absolutely terrible.
