The greatest live recording in rock & roll history was--officially, at least--buried in the vaults of Columbia Records for more than a quarter of a century. But no more: Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert has surfaced on two discs mixed and mastered from three-track source tapes that put the myriad pirated recordings to shame. More important, Live 1966 documents a momentous artistic showdown between a willful, inflamed, and utterly fearless performer and his headstrong core following. The Dylan of the mid '60s had made the leap from socially conscious voice of his generation to surrealistic electric poet, a transformation that was met with contempt by a vocal element of his audience. The most telling moment of the recording centers on the standoff: A folk zealot in the audience shouts, "Judas!" earning cheers from the contentious crowd. Dylan responds by snarling, "I don't believe you. You're a liar," then turns to his group, the Hawks (soon to become the Band), and, as the intro to "Like a Rolling Stone" takes shape, commands, "Play loud!" More often than not, when a film/TV show/CD/record isn't seen or heard, it gathers a reputation that it's the greatest thing ever made that no one has actually experienced, and then when you see it, it sucks. No disappointment here. This set is as electric (horrible pun, but I'm tired) as you have heard, showing that Dylan is one of the greatest live acts ever. When I play this album, I rarely listen to the acoustic CD. It's not terrible, but the 2nd electric set is so dynamic and raw, that the acoustic side pales in comparison. All of the versions on the electric CD are better than their studio counterparts (except Tell Me Momma, which was never released on an album). Dylan's voice is amazing here, brilliant and intense throughout. The audience dialogue is fascinating (yes, someone does call Dylan "Judas", and he talks back to the audience), and the whole thing feels like it could explode at any moment. The Band backs Dylan (even though there were known as The Hawks at this time, and Levon Helm had left the band, because he couldn't stand being booed all the time) with as much intensity as he has. This is one record that lives up to the hype and more.
Baby, Let Me Follow You Down.......2007-07-24
Don't know why this live version isn't talked about more. It's easily the highlight of the set. Even though it's not a Dylan song, he makes it his own. His phrasing on the startling lyrics are absolutely chilling. When Dylan sings, "I would do anything in this god almighty world if you just once drive me out of mind," you feel the desperation, the inhalation of life and the consummation of another perfect lyric.
But, that's just a small part of the beauty. The band clicks in on this track. Dylan's harmonica at the opening is actually melodic. Robertson's three solos are perfection - a rare guitarist who knows how to rip his guitar fluidly into the space and flow out with a precision and emotion so few solos have in modern music. Same goes for the next solo by Garth Hudson on organ. My god, can it get any better? Oh yeah. Richard Manuel's piano weaves and out before you can exhale.
This is not to diminish the rest of the set. It deserves a right to be considered as much more than just an historical artifact. It is definitely not just a document. It is a ragged, precise work of art.
BEAUTIFUL.......2007-07-18
"She's got everything she needs, she's an artist she don't look back". This recordings got everything YOU need, don't look back. Dylan's recording consistency during this period is unsurpassed by any artist ever. We all know his genius and the 60s is where his music was established and perfected beyond the capabilities of what you would think is humanly possible. This bootleg is a diamond among gems. Two reasons-
a-Dylan's energy and creativity were peaking on even par during this period.
b-Dylan notoriously experimented with his vocals throughout his career, on this recording his experimentation hit perfection.
I own most of Dylan's material, this is the best and by far the most played. I could go in depth regarding this album but most reviews have already done the job. As a hard core Dylan fan I just had to put in my ten cents. One word summary-BEAUTIFUL
Bob Dylan: 1966 Royal Albert Hall.......2007-07-06
I resisted buying this CD for a long time, because I have a bad habit of assuming that overhype = bad. In reality, of course, overhype usually indicates that something is good, and worthy of hype, just not so MUCH hype. I finally bought it, mainly because it was one of the last real holes in my Dylan collection. I never, ever expected it to be a 5-star CD.
But it is. The whole audience/Dylan interaction is every bit as fascinating as its legendary status suggests. In fact, it's all so perfect, it's hard to believe it wasn't planned: the "Judas" cat-call comes right before the very last song; and what is the last song? Only the all-time greatest Dylan classic, "Like a Rolling Stone." Dylan's response, too, is great. It's not witty at all--in fact, it reveals that the "Judas" accusation really caught him off guard. He is silent for about 10 seconds, just keeps on fingerpicking the intro to the song, and then he leans into the microphone and says in an even tone, "I don't believe you." It seems like he had to spend about 10 seconds to even convince HIMSELF that the Judas charge wasn't true! Then he delivers his verdict very calmly. But after thinking about it for another five seconds or so, he becomes more self-assured, and yells, "You're a LIAR!" People think of this concert as a defining moment for the Cult of Dylan, but when you listen to it, it seems like it was really a defining moment for Dylan himself. He may have decided, on that very stage, that he would never turn back from his rock experiment. He was plugged in for good.
So, if you are buying this set for the novelty factor, you'll get you're money's worth. However, the first disc--the acoustic set--is a real treasure, probably even the better of the two discs. I don't own much live Dylan, so I can't compare to other concerts, but in comparison to the studio versions this stuff is really great. I mean, solo acoustic versions of Blonde on Blonde songs sounds awesome, but it is even awesomer than you think. "Just LIke a Woman" and "Visions of Johanna," in particular, are way better here than on the original albums they came from.
All in all, despite my original expectations, this is a 5-star CD. Get it soon.
Must have.......2007-06-09
This is a must have for anyone interested in rock and roll hisotry. Someone earlier said it's not worth listening to multipule times, but I disagree. This is one of my most played CDs ever, every track being a great version of the original. "Like a Rolling Stone" might be even better live, with so much energy from Dylan and the band. Any Dylan fan will love this!

One of the many oddities of Bob Dylan's long and unruly career has been the rather cursory recording treatment given his stint as ringleader of the Rolling Thunder Revue. It's a shortcoming that's rectified with the release of Live 1975. Prior to the appearance of this two-disc collection, Rolling Thunder's eclectic road show was chronicled only in the infrequently screened, Dylan-directed Renaldo & Clara film and the bafflingly brief and one-note 1976 live set, Hard Rain. In contrast to its predecessor, this set, culled from four appearances made in November and December of '75, captures the breadth and subtleties of Dylan's Rolling Thunder performances. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You," formerly a coda from Nashville Skyline, is given a rather incongruous bite here, while "It Ain't Me, Babe" is colored brightly by multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield along with erstwhile David Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, the sparkplug of the gratifyingly ragtag group that coalesced on short notice. Solo acoustic performances weave through caterwauling full-band treatments of songs old ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll) and new ("Hurricane" and four other selections from Desire, which wouldn't hit the racks until early '76). While the contributions of a number of caravan cohorts and guests are left out, Joan Baez shares the spotlight with Dylan on four numbers, most notably on the rarity "Mama, You Been on My Mind" and the traditional "The Water Is Wide." But despite its cavalcade trappings, it was Dylan's show, and this collection demonstrates finally just how close to his '60s peak the '70s Dylan was. --Steven Stolder

These discs have been in my cd player since I purchased them a month ago. Dylan's painted face allows him to be more diverse. It has songs that feature just Dylan and his guitar and others with his stellar band. For any Dylan fan interested in the bootleg series, this is a great starting point. I have several others in teh bootleg series, but few are as fun as this one. He just rocks!

Some of you are not going to like this review, but buyers will need some candor here. Dylan really is great, and his often great work in the 1970s is generally underappreciated. But this live set is not the place to learn to love Dylan. If you're curious about this title, my recommendation is go pick up his studio recordings of the mid- to late-1970s, beginning with the remastered titles. These are lovely, sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes groovy, and often superb. If you already have these, then, if you choose to get this title, you might set your expectations a little lower.
The main problem with Live 1975, as a reviewer below notes, is the singing--or, as one might better say, the bellowing. Dylan has one of rock's great voices and in his studio recordings, including his studio recordings of the 1970s, he sings with astounding emotional authority (where does he get that, one wonders--how does anyone get that?!). In these Live 1975 tracks, however, Dylan is out of voice, bellowing either to be heard or else to "voluminate" in lieu of giving a more emotionally nuanced vocal performance. This is not an uncommon failing of concert recordings, but the present case is quite pronounced and I agree with the reviewer below that it seriously taints the enjoyment of these disks.
I may as well go on to note that the sound of the band is quite dense here. I think it's not a performance problem or an engineering problem, but one of arrangement: there are too many instruments crowding the middle range, so it sounds a bit like an undifferentiated wall of sound. Again, rather characteristic of the 1970s live sound, but rarely the case with Dylan's studio recordings.
In short, if you're curious about Dylan in the 1970s, there are better places to look. My favorite of the Live albums is the 1964 one.
This album rocks!.......2007-01-18
Without a doubt one of Dylans best recordings. I was blown away hearing this for the first time, and the twentieth for that matter. This album was just recently released and is a must have for any Dylan fan. If you're looking for a gift for a Dylan fan this is it. Most fans have the popular titles, Blood on the Tracks, Route 66 Revisited, etc. but there's a good chance they don't have this title yet. Guaranteed not to disappoint.
Another classic from the Bootleg Series with some essential takes.......2007-01-12
The Rolling Thunder Review live collection is a close second to Live 1966 as the most essential live Dylan album ever released. Throughout these recordings, a revitalized and energetic Dylan hollers out his new and old classics to a rambunctious crowd of random people (the show traveled like a circus and had little to no publicity) and reinvents many of his old songs along the way.
This series of shows, like many of Dylan's great post-'65 concerts, features a combination of hard-rocking band numbers and solo acoustic songs. He's got a great band, too, with several guitarists, a tight rhythm section, a violin, and even a pedal steel guitar. With this rocking ensemble he reworks several classics into hard rocking barnstormers. "It Ain't Me Babe" and "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" groove at quick paces and sound almost unrecognizable from their folky original versions. "It Takes a Lot to Laugh" and "Just Like A Woman" are transformed from their delicate studio incarnations to anthemic rockers. Likewise, Dylan's new material (soon to be recorded in the studio as Desire) rocks hardest of all. The versions of "Hurricane" and "Isis" recorded here put the studio versions to shame, performed with fire and energy here that makes these versions the essential recordings.
Some of the album's best moments are the acoustic tunes. The recent hits "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate" sound great, and duets with Joan Baez like "The Water is Wide" channel Dylan's folk past while at the same time remaining firmly rooted in where he was at that moment.
The Rolling Thunder Revue presents Dylan in one of his most daring and original endeavors, and the excellent liner notes tell the story quite well. This collection contains a great selection of classics as well as some great songs that are under-represented in Dylan's live catalog ("The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"). It's a wild ride and a rewarding listen that I heartily recommend.

I absolutely love this double album. Growing up I owned a bootleg of the rolling thunder revue. Unfortunatly it got lost, however this cd did make up for it. The re-working of "it ain't me babe" is great, and the Joan Baez duo of "mama you've been on my mind" is really good with the country/rocking feel. My one slight problem with this is that "NEVER LET ME GO" was left off...that is not cool

The opening track of the album by Darling Violetta, is absolutely fantastic. Having all the Buffy albums and knowing how thought provoking the music is from that show, I did expect more from the Angel album. But it's still good music and any fan would be happy to say they have it.

One of my favorite is season 5 episode 6 "The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco " I wish this compilation include the guitar solo section. I am completely opposite to the one of the reviewer. I love the music part only. I find it inspiring. There's some Hans Zimmer style in it. I really dig it...quiet yet powerful. However, it start to become a little too formulated. Too much of the same thing is definitely not a good thing. Ahhh, classic tragic hero stories. I can't resist.

The brooding Bob Dylan of the 1966 live collection in the Dylan bootleg series gave way to an even more hooded character on the second live bootleg album from 1974. Which makes the jump back to a younger Dylan in this set all the more jarring. Here is Dylan as an eager-to-please 23 year old with nothing between him and his worshippers but a guitar, a harmonica, and, for four songs, his lover, Joan Baez. In marked contrast to the acerbic electric Dylan of the mid-'60s and the tight-lipped living legend of the mid-'70s, here is Dylan as entertainer. Joking and bantering with the crowd, Dylan deals up some favorites ("The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right"), but is already shedding his earnest folkie persona; imagine another artist a mere two years into his career declining to perform a hit on the scale of "Blowin' in the Wind." But Dylan was moving fast. Having completed the last all-acoustic collection of his early years three months before the Philharmonic concert, he would record the half-electric/half-acoustic Bringing It All Back Home three months later. Three of the four acoustic songs from that album are presented here, as are a handful of then-unreleased songs, including "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues," "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" (which was soon given a rock arrangement), and a protest-period remnant, "Who Killed Davey Moore?" Had Concert at the Philharmonic Hall appeared the year it was recorded, it would been seen as a respite for folk fans to catch their collective breath before Dylan reappeared in his rock & roll Rimbaud guise. This is THE Bob Dylan that I cherish - if you really dig some of the eariler, folksy "Times they are a changin" Bob Dylan then this is a great album for you.
The duets with Joan are an added bonus - with a bit of Dylan's wit and humor showing through. We are also treated with a (small) amount of stage banter from Dylan - something which was regretably absent when I saw him in 2003 in concert.

For me Dylan was always there but I didn't get it. I mean Johnny Cash told me that Bob Dyaln was a great song writer, But I just never got what all the Dylan fuss was about.

This late in Bob Dylan's career, it seems that Colombia is content to release (and profit from) a perennial bootleg album. For diehard fans there are reasons to buy and cherish all of these, not all of them healthy. For your casual fan however, some releases are better than others.
Unlike the other releases, Vol. 6 lacks a distinctive sound that made the other volumes so engaging. First, there was Vol. 1-3 (one release). This three-disc set blazed the trail by making available live and unreleased cuts that spanned Bob's entire career; these discs reveal just how deep Dylan's musical veins run. Vol. 4, The Royal Albert Hall Concert, is essential because it captures Dylan at the height of his creativity in 1966. These two discs pack in an otherworldly, heroine-fueled, Rimbauld-esque vision that is still shattering rock and roll music today. One can feel in these performances the psychological tension (created in part from the times, but more from an artist in the process of shedding skins faster than he can grow into new ones). Vol. 5, The Rolling Thunder Revue, also captures another pivotal era in Dylan's career, this time that of a thirty-something icon's last stab at youth. Again, there is an intensity to the performances, to his voice, to the rolicking play of talented musicians.
Lastly we arrive at this collection, the Halloween Concert. What does it lack? For one, passion. The performances feel forced. Dylan is shaking off the albatross of being a "protest singer," and about to embrace (lyrically) the subjective and personal. When we do get these newer songs, like "It's all Right Ma" and "Gates of Eden" the listener feels this intensity. But the older songs, wich make up most of the set, are not performed with much passion or conviction. Dylan's voice whines and sounds distracted. The short set performed with Joan Baez is particularly disappointing, as all sets with her were. Joan, for all her talents as a singer, stands in too much contrast to Dylan's ideosyncratic voice. Song birds are beautiful and bull frog croaks are beautiful -- but not on top of one another. You can understand, listening to their shaky duets here, why in a matter of weeks Dylan would not allow her with him on the stage anymore.
Perhaps the most interesting aspects of this album are Dylan's monologues and dialogues with audience members between songs. He giggles and bandies absurd sentences, sounding very childish in the process, cannabis induced of course. He plays games, at one point playing the same chords over and over, pretending as though he has forgotten the first words to the song.
For an all acoustic concert Columbia would have been wiser to release something from 1963, a time when Dylan still felt connected to the songs we was performing. Here he spends too much time on material he'd rather leave behind. One exception it his rendition of "A Hard Rains a Gonna Fall," certainly the most intense cut on the record.
All in all, my intention is not to disparage this recording. After all, it is a complete Bob Dylan concert recorded during his hey-day. But considering the wealth of other material available, the previous bootlegs should be purchased before this one. That being stated, for fanatics like me, it is still a must, and beats the pants off "Knocked Out and Loaded" and "Down in the Groove," two albums only a mother could love.
Terrific early Dylan.......2005-01-12
Terrific, eh? Four stars, eh? Yes, I know, Dylan-philes everywhere are already seeing me in hell, but I'm just trying to be fair and balanced. So sue me.
Another legendary Bob Dylan-concert which has been available as a bootleg for decades, the so-called "Halloween Concert" is not quite as accessible (or essential) as "Bootleg Series" volumes 4 and 5, the 1966 and 1975 concerts.
This is strictly acoustic material, just Bob Dylan, his guitar and his harmonica rack, and not everybody who like band-backed Dylan enjoy his earliest solo stuff. And while there are plenty of warm, wonderful performances here, there are also a couple of performances, including an 11-minute "It's Alright Ma", which are mostly for diehards.
But if you're seriously interested in the acoustic Bob Dylan, this concert is a must-have. The sound is spectacular, wonderfully realistic and immediate, and the transfer is extremely clean. The packaging is lavish, featuring a fine essay, numerous photos, and discographical information, just like the previous issues in this series. And there are some truly stellar performances here...104 minutes of music, including a wonderful, sensitive performance of "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll", an acidic "With God On Our Side", and a lovely, melodic "If You Gotta Go, Go Now (Or Else You Gotta Stay All Night)".
Joan Baez guests on four songs on disc two. Dylan and her fool around on an enjoyable "Mama, You've Been On My Mind", and Baez sings a thoroughly beautiful "Silver Dagger" which is worth the entire second disc.
There are protest songs here, alongside "talking blues", folk, love songs, and humorous narratives. Great renditions of "Spanish Harlem Indident", "Mr Tambourine Man", "To Ramona", "The Times They Are A-Changin'", the definitive solo performance of "I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)"...
And Dylan himself is is high spirits, relaxed, friendly and funny.
This is a must-have for fans of Dylan's acoustic period, and even those who already own the bootleg should consider replacing it. To me, these performances are often better than the solo numbers on the 1966 album, and several of them are equal to the magnificent acoustic songs on "Live 1975".

One of my favorite Bobby D albums.If you're into his early sixties stuff you'lle love this album.I wasn't alive during his heyday so i love having live stuff of his.So go out and buy it... go on.. go. HURRY!

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14
I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

Favorite Bond Film.......2007-04-26
Music score was great. Paul McCartney and Wings. Movie well fitted for Roger Moore, a great candidate for this role.
The Solitaire melody is dreamy and romantic and often moody.
"Bond Goes to New York' is sharp yet out-witted. "Live and Let Die", a sacrament to testimony. Too good to pass up.
Finally! The complete Live and Let Die Soundtrack.......2005-09-13
I have only been waiting for this for 22 years! Granted when this was first released on LP (Vinyl record technology, pre cd, pre cassette and during the horror period of 8 track tapes!),
Only so much music could be recorded on a record. This album finally satisfies all of us who wanted all of the music. Sir George Martin does a wonderful variation to the classic 007 theme as well as great action sequences with different variations of the main title and then some original songs. Sir Martin was the first to score for Bond since Barry who had scored all of the previous movies unavailable for this one. The music was a fabulous introduction to the new Bond Roger Moore.
This Album will stand the test of time when good music was being made for the series.

Live and Let Delight.......2004-08-12
The remastered release of LIVE AND LET DIE is much improved. The previous issue was no different than the track line up on the original 1973 vinyl record -- or eight track tape, depending on your antiquated stereo. Not only does this release include additional superb tracks, some of the original cuts have also been lengthened and more closely correspond the the film soundtrack. George Martin, the Beatles producer, took the helm from John Barry in scoring the eighth James Bond film soundtrack. Though no one has yet equaled Barry's compositions for Bond films, which we have not heard since 1987's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, Martin's soundtrack was perfect for launching Roger Moore's first outing as Bond. Let us not forget Paul McCartney's brilliant theme of the same name.
The musical chemistry between McCartney and Martin is obvious as the title theme music is blended throughout the soundtrack. As a matter of trivia the movie producers originally planned to use McCartney's title theme with a female vocalist before the former Beatle showed his mettle as a negotiator. In the end, Paul McCartney and Wings performed the title track. LIVE AND LET DIE also proved to be a hit Apple/Capitol single as well.
There are a couple things missing from the CD. When some of the James Bond soundtracks were re-released a couple years ago they included selected soundbytes and an analog movie trailer. Apparently the remastered LIVE AND LET DIE soundtrack did not rate these extra features.
Oh well, Live and Let Die. In the meantime, live and go buy.
Why weren't these tracks included in the first place?.......2003-04-16
Yes, that is my sentiment....in fact, it seems in all the other re-mastered Bond soundtracks, the best music is left out, and Live and Let Die was no exception.
George Martin took over from John Barry to write the score for Live and Let Die and he more than admirably did the job. First of all, (take note David Anrold), is that he incorporate the theme song into the score even though it wasn't written by him...thus continuing the tradition of Bond music set by John Barry. Second, he wrote another piece for Solitaire which is also used extensively throughout the score. In all, George Martin wrote a score worthy of Barry himself....
Which is what makes the original release such a disappointment because many of the best music was left out. The re-master remedied that and includes virtually the entire score: the music for the pre-title sequence (gun barrel/snakebit), other notables are Bond and Rosie, The Lovers, Bond to New York, and many of the cues for action/chase sequences. There is an alternate cue for San Monique which I think is better than the one on the original release.
But why the 3 stars rating?
We have to wait for Bond's 40th anniversary for the soundtrack's proper release, AND rebuy the soundtrack (I have it in cassette and CD and now the Re-master). Call me bitter, I think the people who runs the Bond empire should stop treating us fans so shabbily.

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.
I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.
This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...
But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)
If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).
But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.
The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23
If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.
The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.
Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.
Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).
Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.
Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.
And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.
I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).
I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).
I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).
If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!
Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16
If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

Uplifting and beautiful.......2006-02-21
Good traveling music, good working/thinking/reading music, good do-nothing music. It's not jazz, more new-age but not really...it's hard to describe. Beautiful African-themed harmonies of some voice and mostly music, with African animal sounds or weather sounds in the background, that combine with perfect rhythms to create a thoroughly good CD. Worth getting if you enjoy any of the above! By the way, "Temba" means "Hope".
I like everything on this album except one song. I think that is #5, or whichever one there is a woman singing...I don't know what she's saying & it's a different pace than other songs so it is not as pleasing to me.
If you'd like a travel-with-kids CD that does not have anyone singing silly tunes in an overtly cheery tone, this is good for that too - the occasional animal sounds and the rhythms are fun.
