Good Continuation of the Series.......2006-11-09
About 2 years ago, Far Out Records enlisted the help of Kenny Dope, one half of MAW, to put together a compilation celebrating Far Out Record's 10 years in the business. What came of it was a terrific mixed cd loaded with Far Out releases, 12", artists and friends of the label along with some of Kenny Dope's production touches and exclusive remixes. Far Out's still alive and kickin', releasing loads of fantastic albums since the first Brazilika in 2004 and the UK label shows no signs of slowing down. This one, however, is done up by another friend of the label - 4Hero.
The cd starts out promising and is loaded with Azymuth - perhaps the grand supreme masters of fusion. Milton Nascimento's "Bicho Homen" (wild man) gives you a bit of an old school Brazilian vibe with his dominating voice. Then Azymuth's "Morning", an exclusive on a tribute album for them, is easily one of the highlights. It's a throwback to their 70's sound with calm keys with a splash of modern flair. "Maracatueira" is given a good re-edit by Marc Mac himself (the re-edit is off of Incognito's remix) and it fades pretty neatly into Mark Pritchard's (Troubleman)remix of Azymuth's "Pieces of Ipanema". Terrific broken beats throughout the cut and it fits within the vibe of the mix - and it coolly flows into Offwor'ds "Black Magic Power Ride" as remixed by Far Out's uber producer Roc Hunter. The track features Marcos Valle on vocals and has a cool bubbly effect that take you away. Another highlight track to me was Antonio Adolfo, Brazil & Brazuka's "Luizao". What a memory! Great musicianship, great spirit - well done with quick remake and classic. I was also a big fan of Joyce's "Todos Os Santos" (all the Saints) and Milton Nascimento's "Saidas e Bandeiras" was a good closeout.
Overall, a very good piece and terrific for anyone that hasn't checked out some of Far Out's artists and compilations. It wasn't flawless, however. With the first Brazilika, I couldn't stand how the flow was great but then the DJ seemed to have the urge to remind you that he was putting this togethre (by constantly saying his name... "Kenny Dope, Kenny Dope, etc."). Well, the same happens here and it's equally annoying. Yes, we know it's 4Hero (Marc Mac) putting it together because after all, their name is bigger & brighter than the title of the album. And I didn't fall for all of the songs... I like Nature's Plan (another 4Hero project) but didn't go for "Broken Samba" and I prefer another version of "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser". But none of these were enough to not recommend this... not in a long shot so check it out. And if you like this, be sure to hear a few other Far Out artists individually like Sabrina Malheiros, Democustico (not featured here... odd), Grupo Batuque, Azymuth, Joyce, Marcos Valle and loads more. The label is synonymous with "Class". I guess they stopped doing the "Brazilian Love Affair" series.

Really a Four Star Effort.......2004-10-16
At least it should be - but I cannot change the star rating so it sticks at three. Far Out records is a label out of London that's been around for ten years now. They've certainly had their fair share of releases in the nu-Brazil and old-school Brazil music scene. But utilizing the talents of some ofthe all time greats like Joyce, Marcos Valle and Os Ipanemas, they more than carved a niche in the market and gained a terrific reputation for putting out quality releases. This particular release is a tribute to their history. It's a compilation of all of those works, including the "Brazilian Love Affair" series which spans 5 volumes on its own. This one's done by Kenny & Dope FX and, well, it's interesting and even has a few exclusive pieces thrown to the mix. But it's clear - he dug the third "Love Affair" cd the most.
The good: The incredible songs! Besides those I mentioned above, you have a heavy Christian Franck influence (Smoke City/Da Lata/Chris & Nina), you have a chilled out beach guitar track by Grupo Batuque and cool samba with Percussion Breakdowns. You also have the nu-jazz of Los Ladrones in their sexy cut "Las Lues Del Norte". You also have some good cuts by Friends From Rio and several others like Azymuth, Nature's Plan, Democustico. And hey, Kenny Dope did a great job mixing here too. The Bad: Ho boy... Kenny Dope did okay. But he didn't have to keep reminding the listener that he was the one mixing! Seemed like after every other cut he'd chip in with "This is Kenny Dope..." or whatever other self-glorifying crap, thus ruining the groove. Not only is his name in bright orange on the cover of the CD but it's actually fonted BIGGER than the name of the CD and he wants to make sure we don't 'forget'... Adios humility! Check Chris & Nina's "Agua" and how it ends vs. the one on Brazilian Love Affair. I don't know what else to say... it sucks that he did that throughout the CD. The cut'll remind you of August Day Song, only better, and while the mix in the end could have been great with the up-beat bossa/samba swing, KD didn't have to cut in with his own vocal...
I recommend this to anyone that hasn't checked out the Brazilian Love Affair CD's. If you have those, only really check this for the exclusive cuts and maybe the linear notes that shows the small degree of separation between DJ's and artists that appreciate new Brazilian tunes (Rainer Truby, Nicola Conte, etc.). If you want the melancholic nu-Brazil, I recommend the Brazilution series... 5 and 5.2 along with Brazilectro 3. You want some mixed up-beat latin tracks check the Caiprinha series, Nova Latino series and Latin Deluxe Dia em Noite.
